In this wonderfully inventive novel, Grace Tiffany weaves fact with fiction to bring Judith Shakespeare to vibrant life. Through Judith's eyes, we glimpse the world of her famous playwright father: his work, his family, and his inspiration.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Life with Shakespeare.......2006-07-30

What would it be like to live with Shakespeare? In this book Grace Tiffany brilliantly imagines Shakespeare's family--his brothers, his estranged wife, and his spunky daughter, Judith. The book begins by describing Judith and her twin, Hamnet, who share a childhood filled with acting out scenes from their father's plays. Then a game goes terribly wrong and Hamnet dies. Judith blames herself. She is also furious with her father when he writes TWELFTH NIGHT, which seems to mirror her situation.

In a true Shakespearean twist, Judith disguises herself as a boy and acts in the play--a girl pretending to be a boy pretending to be a girl pretending to be a boy!

This book is filled with fascinating details about life in Shakespeare's time. It is a quick, enjoyable read, especially for anyone at least a little familiar with Shakespeare's work. I did think there needed to be a little more resolution at the end, especially concerning Judith's love interest, but I still highly recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Romp through renaissance England.......2006-07-14

William Shakespeare had a daughter named Judith; that's a fact, but this book is a fictional account of his relationship with her. In My Father Had a Daughter, protagonist Judy finds her grief over the death of Hamnet, her brother, on display in one of her father's plays. In the guise of a boy, Judy travels to London where her father spends most of his time working. She plans to ruin the opening of "Twelth Night."

A young girl traveling alone in sixteenth century London is a dangerous thing. Shady characters are everywhere, and a young man even threatens to reveal her secret unless she sleeps with him. Judy finds herself caught up in the glamourous (?) life of the theatre and meets famous actors like Richard Burbage and Will Kemp.

Shakespeare fans will enjoy this romp through Renaissance England although it is suggested they overlook discrepancies between fact and fiction. I found the story to be anticlimactic to a small extent; after the adventure in London, the book continues as a memoir of Judith as an adult. Still a good read though.

I love books about Shakespearean times. This was a very good story with nice description and good character development. I really enjoyed it! Hope you do too!

4 out of 5 stars Looking for more of Ms. Tiffany's works.......2004-11-19

I noticed that most of the criticism made by other readers involves the distortion of what we believe to be the facts about the family of William Shakespeare. Please remember this is fiction and that the point of the story wasn't to portray the actual events, but to explore the relationship between a daughter and her father using characters who are familiar but about which we really don't know many facts.

And what a job has been done here with not only exploring the relationship between William and Judith, but between the entire Shakespeare clan. Ms. Tiffany does a wonderful job creating an extremely complex character in Judith. She's haunted by the death of her twin brother; torn between love, hate and resentment of her father; drawn to a life that as a woman in the 1600s is impossible for her to live.

Ms. Tiffany also spends time exploring the relationship between Judith and her mother. It's quite clear that she worships her father and doesn't really think much of her mother in the beginning, but as the book develops and time passes we see that the relationship between Judith and her mother improves as she matures and begins to realize some of the dynamics that exist between her mother and father.

But the main charm is watching the relationship between William and Judith. We see her rather normal hero worship of her father as a child, followed by the inevitable disillusionment toward her father when she discovers that he is using the family tragedies as a source of material for his plays. When she sets out for London to embarrass him she ends up with a greater understanding of her father's existence and what drives him which leads to forgiveness.

I'll be getting a copy of Will (Ms. Tiffany's story about William) soon.

Although I do not remember Shakespeare In Love, I do remember I didn't like it. I enjoyed this book well enough but the story didn't have a thicker plot as much as I would have liked. I wish things had worked out between her and Nate but all is well that ends well!

    4 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2005-09-21

This was a good, romantic novel. If you like Diana Hamilton, Lynne Graham, Jane Porter, Michelle Reid, etc. books with strong Alpha Male characters, then you will love this one!! The hero and the heroine meet again after she secretly has his baby. They were separated because she found out he was engaged and his fiance set her up to look like she stole jewelry. Of course, he believed the evil fiance & cast the poor heroine out of his life so that she was forced to have the baby she conceived without his knowledge alone. Read it to see how he finds out he was wrong, gets the heroine to forgive him, etc., etc.

    Book Description

Jack Chalker's Well World epic occupies an honored place among the classics of science fiction. Now this boldly imagined, intricately plotted new novel takes us deeper into the Well World than ever before . . .

On the mysterious Well World, the evil tyrant Josich and his dark agents search desperately for the eight scattered pieces of the fabled Straight Gate. Whoever possesses the Gate will wield enormous power, travelling between universes at the speed of light and wreaking havoc across galaxies.

Opposing Josich is a small band of travelers new to the Well World. There is Core, once a machine, now flesh and blood; Ming and Ari, two minds sharing a single body; Jaysu, an angel; and Genghis O'Leary, a lizard being. Unbeknownst to them, they have an unlikely ally: a vengeful entity who is able to clone any person or object with a single touch--and mete out death just as swift . . .

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Well World Series.......2005-04-29

Along with the Sea is Full of Stars, I found these two books the best of all the books. Perhaps it was because there was no Nathan Brazil or Mavra Chang who can not lose due to the Well World itself aiding them. Having Kincaid as a "bogey-man" in the background actually fit his personality and characterization. Each major character had their purpose and part and if one looks at the theme of these books with some detachment from the earlier books, the story is actually very different.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the rest of the Well World Saga.......2002-11-19

I read the reviews before I bought and figured that the negatives were "I miss Nathan Brazil". I was wrong.

The only character I grew to like had her mind wiped pretty much right away, so I didn't really care about her later.

The plot was so convoluted and confusing, and by the end the threat so unclear, that by the end of the second book I hardly cared who won.

You know, if you read this Jack, I cared about Renard, Nicki, Wu Julie, Asam, Marquoz, Serge Ortega, Gypsy and Prof. Zinder, every one of them more than I cared about any of these characters. What made the previous books great was caring about the characters.

Also, the underwater people were just wet land people. They thought and acted like they were just land people trying to dom the things that land people do with the "problem" of all that water being in the way. A water people would LIKE being in the water, and their entire culture would reflect that.

    1 out of 5 stars Something Else?.......2001-06-07

As soon as I read Chalker's introduction to this duology - the newest addition to the increasingly large Well World series - I decided to give it a try. So it wasn't a part of the normal canon, as he put it, but instead a book about Something Else. Well and good, I'm always ready to try something new from an established story teller.

Two books and about 700 pages later, I still don't know what he was talking about. I'm also extremely perplexed: just what happened to Chalker's writing? His prose, plotting, character development - even his humor - don't match up with the previous work that bears his name. This duology provided such a lackluster story that I am at a complete loss to explain its existence in print. I'm tempted to visit Chalker's web site and write him an email asking, "Why?" The only possible answer I can derive comes from Chalker's shameless introductory statement that he didn't plan to return to the Well World until someone fronted a sizeable sum. Apparently, this offer didn't provide enough impetus for Chalker to return to form.

Page 1 of the first novel, "The Sea is Full of Stars," starts with the strong, confident narrative voice I remember from Chalker's earlier novels. Unfortunately, this turns out to be the sole shining moment for the entire series. I almost wish that Delrey hadn't plugged these into the original Well World saga as books 6 and 7. They don't belong in the same category as the originals.

3 out of 5 stars The five-minute fix invades the Well World.......2001-04-21

Well, hmmm. I would have liked to have liked this book -- I've always enjoyed the Well World books -- but this one was somewhat disappointing. It seemed very rushed, and plotlines that were introduced in the previous book were downplayed or ignored entirely. For instance, the whole "The Avenger must triumph not for revenge" plotline suggested in first book was never really used, and Kincaid's role throughout both books is reduced to that of a rarely-seen bogey-man -- in fact, he turns out to be a totally unimportant character, whose role could have been filled by any other character. The other "pivotal" character, Angel, gains extraordinary powers in order to ultimately become -- the world's most powerful librarian. Josich is present only in the last 20-pages or so of the book, and this makes the whole ending seem rather rushed. None of the actions of the characters preceding the denoument actually has any meaningful impact on the climax of the story, and the only unpredictable parts come when Chalker changes the rules on us (with hand-waving as to why Brazil & Chang might have not been called, and glossing over why the Well World didn't take more action to protect itself earlier on). Furthermore, it's as if I've seen these characters before. Granted, even in the non-Well books, the signature of all of Chalker's writing is to take characters and mangle them physically and emotionally, but even beyond that, Core is largely synonymous with Obie, Kincaid is Brazil without the screen time, Angel is a weird mix of Wuju and Vardia, and Jules is a near dead-ringer for Hain. (I will admit, however, to getting a real chuckle when O'Leary and his group actually swallow some of the bad guys... :-)

Twenty pages from the end, it appeared to me like we'd need a whole other book to finish this story, which I was thoroughly engrossed in. Instead, we get a 5-minute fix as if it were some Star Trek cliffhanger, and I was left saying, "What....?"

5 out of 5 stars Well oh Well.......2001-01-10

I have followed and reread all of the Well's 10 books several times. I find this series as well as the Flux and Diamond series to be the best works of scifi written since Asimov. Some readers have written their displeasure due to the limited use of the most interesting character; however, even in the original Well series, Nathan (God) only dominated a portion of the series (including the book with his name on the cover). Sometimes, less is more. The ending of this book leaves a huge door open to sequals and a new possible mixture of the foundling empires of the "real" galaxy with a mixture of the Well and it's inhabitants. I guess the other readers just miss Obie (or were overly hot for Mavra).

        Book Description

Though he was a familiar Church leader for many years before becoming pope, there has been little awareness of the spiritual side of Benedict XVI. Now for the first time readers are given a brilliant overview of the Pope’s most inspirational teachings in Let God’s Light Shine Forth. Editor Robert Moynihan offers a brief introduction to the life and work of Pope Benedict XVI and then presents an absorbing collection of his most persuasive words.

Within these pages, Pope Benedict XVI introduces a God who is good, beautiful, and true, the fountain of all life. The most important thing for each person, in Benedict’s view, is to discover and develop a loving relationship with God, because this is the way to the deepest and most lasting happiness that human beings can experience. Even in our darkest moments, he teaches, we can have hope that all things will ultimately work out in a wonderful way to show God’s glory and bring blessedness to individual men and women.

Many of these selections deal specifically with questions such as: Who is God? How we can know him? What does he wants us to do and to be? Having spent his entire life thinking, studying, and praying about such questions, Benedict has become perhaps the leading contemporary theologian (the word literally means “knower of God”) in the Roman Catholic Church. From his earliest work as a teacher to his first words as leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict’s vision of hope is powerfully summarized in Let God’s Light Shine Forth.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An informative but uneven sampling.......2007-01-21

I found the first part of this book, a brief biography/interview of the Pope with the editor, to be enlightening and inspiring. I don't know why, but it hadn't crossed my mind that Benedict grew up in Nazi Germany, so the account of his childhood and of how his family maintained their faith despite the fascist war ideology is a real eye-opener.

However, I found the larger second part, devoted to little snippets from interviews, articles, and books, to be less helpful. Most of the quotes are very short, no more than a paragraph or two. Plucked from their original context, they make for a terribly uneven introduction to Benedict's work and thought: sometimes illuminating, sometimes unclear. I think I would have preferred it if the editor had continued in the same vein as Part One, putting a bit of shape and coherence to the original material.

5 out of 5 stars Provides Great Understanding of the new Holy Father........2005-07-19

This is an excellent work which provides information on the Holy Father and summarizes his views from previous written works. As then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger he published nearly 50 books on the Church. He truly is "hands-on" and clearly understands what is going on in the Church outside of Rome. A quick and easy read that will bring you up to date on Benedict XVI.

5 out of 5 stars An Accurate Sense of the New Pope.......2005-06-28

Robert Moynihan gives us an accurate overview of the vision of Pope Benedict. The first part of the book gives us a sense of the background and values of the new Pope based on the Pope's past writings and interviews and based on Moynihan's own repeated conversations with Benedict when he was a cardinal. The second part is a topical collection of the Pope's views on many issues ranging from various theological dogmas to matters of morality to issues in the Christian life such as suffering and loneliness. The third and last part of the book consists of a reprinting of the first messages and homily of the new Pope from that extraordinary month of April 2005. You will get a good sense about the new Pope's vision from this book. Personally, I was struck by the Pope's strong views on the urgency of liturgical reform and on the centrality of defending human dignity.

Pompano tamales. Shrimp enchiladas. Candied sweet papaya. These are some of the foods whose recipes reside in the pages of Nancy and Jeffrey Gerlach's Foods of the Maya. The authors have spent years traveling throughout Mexico, familiarizing themselves with the cultures and cuisines of the people they have encountered. They created this cookbook to bring the flavors of the Yucatán to tables north of the border.

In an easy-to-follow format, Foods of the Maya provides handy background and travel information about the region and some of its ruins before dipping into the ninety-one recipes included here, organized according to meal course. There are recipes that will suit most everyone's palate, from sauces and salsas to soups and sausages; from vegetarian and meat appetizers and main dishes to simple drinks and desserts. Each section begins with a brief description of the course and the types of food involved. The recipes are clear and easy to understand—one need not be a trained chef with a vast kitchen to create a tasty Yucatecan meal.

Foods of the Maya incorporates an array of cooking tips and techniques and a brief glossary of terms to help in food preparation—the authors have ensured that ingredients for their recipes are readily available at local food stores. Book Description

While it took the demands of two World Wars to bring aviation into acceptance by the general public, it was a relative handful of engineers, entrepreneurs, and pilots who positioned the technology and resources necessary to make aviation one of the deciding factors in ending World War II. This book attempts to illuminate some of the historically significant technical developments that were incorporated into World War II aircraft engines that directly contributed to the execution and tactics of the war.

Although numerous books have been published on all of the more common World War II aircraft and several books have been published on engines, rarely have the two been brought together.

Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of World War II offers an interesting look at the technology that was so important to eventual Allied victory. The book is organized into separate sections on British and U.S. aircraft piston engines. Aircraft engines detailed in the book include: Rolls-Royce - Merlin, Griffon, Peregrine, Vulture; Bristol - Poppet Valve Engines, Mercury, Pegasus,Sleeve Valve Engines, Hercules, Taurus, Centaurus; Napier - Rapier, Dagger, Sabre; General Electric Turbosuperchargers; Pratt and Whitney - R-1340 Wasp, R-985 Wasp Jr., R-1535 Twin Wasp Jr., R-1830 Twin Wasp,R-2000, R-2800 Double Wasp, R-4360 Wasp Major; Allison - V-1710, V-3420; and Wright Aeronautical Corporation - R-1820 Cyclone, R-2600 Cyclone 14, R-3350 Cyclone 18, R-4090.

This book also includes chapters on: Aircraft Engine Requirements (fuels, charge heating, radiator development, lubrication, and more); and Hyper Activity and Other Near Misses.

An enjoyable, informative book for aeronautical engineers, aircraft enthusiasts, WWII veterans and buffs, and historians.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and expensive.......2006-07-25

This book has been highly touted, but does not live up to its hype. Any number of books are as interesting, and much cheaper. "A History of Aorcraft Piston Engines" (Smith) comes to mind, as well as many of the books by Bill Gunston. Don't buy this book without seeing it first. For the same money you can get two or three other books that will together contain much more information.

5 out of 5 stars "Allied Aircraft Piston Engines" solid work that fills important niche in WW2 aviation history.......2005-12-24

While there are hundreds if not thousands of books devoted to World War II military aviation, only a handful cover with any detail the critically important aspect of aero engine development. This is one of the few books available on this topic and Graham White generally does a good job covering in detail the principal (as well as obscure) British and American aircraft engines. White begins his book by describing some of the challenges faced by aircraft piston engine designers before diving headlong into the specific histories and technical aspects of key British and American engines. His descriptions of each engine are highly technical and he displays his talents as an engineer and mechanic in terms of his detailed description of engine parts and systems. White also brings us back to the bigger picture with vivid descriptions of the personalities who played a role in the design and manufacture of each engine as well as descriptions of the aircraft that used them.

White admits that by only covering British and American (as opposed to Axis) engines he is only telling "half" of the aircraft engine story, and one hopes that White chooses to take up the challenge of telling this other half in a future second book. In the meantime, some areas where White's book falls short include a much-needed glossary explaining the terminology he uses for those aviation buffs and historians not steeped in the field of engineering or engine mechanics. Furthermore in some cases White's descriptions of World War II aircraft can be found in sources elsewhere or are simply inaccurate-he should have stuck with what he knows well by focusing on the technical aspects of how each engine related to a particular aircraft rather than waste space discussing each aircraft's development and operational histories. Finally White's conclusion-a tirade against 21st century corporate capitalism-is too opinionated and frankly out of place in a work of this nature.

Despite these small flaws White's book remains one of the few available authoritative sources on the topic of aircraft piston engines, and is an important acquisition for anyone interested in World War II military aviation.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2003-02-06

They don't come much better than this. Along with his volume on the R-2800 Mr White provides fans of aircraft engines with a very good read.

4 out of 5 stars Great! - Could Have Been Better........2001-12-05

This books treatment of the technical aspects of WWII aircraft engines is nothing short of fantastic! Mr. White appears to be very knowledgeable (right down to the nuts & bolts level) in the development of these engines and their service histories. His use of contemporary references adds great authority to the work.

My only criticisms are that Mr. White puts emphasis on some of the relatively obscure engines of British manufacture while neglecting some of the more important subjects.
Also (in my opinion), he unfairly downgrades the performance of the Allison V-1710. He seems to attribute its' lackluster performance in such craft as the P-39 Airacobra to a shortcoming of the engine itself, while virtually ignoring the fact that some blockhead in the military saw fit to eliminate its' supercharger. And there is little emphasis placed on the spectacular performance of the same engine (with supercharger) in the P-38 Lightning.

Having said that; except for these shortcomings, I would rank this book amongst the 2 or 3 best books ever written on the subject! You cannot be well informed on this subject until you read "Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of WW II"!

5 out of 5 stars Getting the Creative Juices flowing.......2005-09-12

This is one of those books that helps those who are only semi-creative get some ideas on how to make projects their own. Most of the patterns are not overly complex. Some of them are going to seem pretty challenging for folks who are not too far into their scroll-sawing avocation. The photography is worth the price of the book. Different treatments of the various projects, different textures, different color combos, all help the craft mechanic to become a possibility thinker. The book presumes some familiarity with scrolling. It's not a book for a rank beginner, but most of the patterns can be accomplished by a person who has learned to cut a two dimensional project with inside and outside cuts. For those reasons alone, it's a good one to have on your shelf. Highly recommended.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting designs.......2003-06-23

I recommend this book. The designs are interesting. Very thin ornaments when you're finished cutting them. All come with directions/suggestions on how to paint them.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get Quick Results.......2005-04-05

After watching HGTV perform miracles of decorating, now the average person wants the same quick fix. This book, by reliable Better Homes and Gardens, delivers ideas and techniques for a quick transformation.
Of course it helps if you're starting out with some nice pieces of furniture and accessories. The rooms are eclectic, shabby chic and the suggestions are easy-to-read bullets beside the photos.
Samples: fill a blank corner with wildflowers or even bare branches in a pitcher or frame several vintage record albums. Nineteen of the ideas have more detailed instructions at the back of the book. These include making a padded bulletin board, upholstering a headboard, and stamping designs on walls and fabrics.
The photos are large enough and the ideas easy to absorb. Even experienced decorators will pick up a few ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas for such a little book ! :-).......1998-12-04

This is a useful guide for decorating in that "New Traditional" style. It's full of great ideas that can be completed quickly and easily using the art of furniture placement, and ideas for combining flea market finds with what you already own. Chock full of full color photographs and ideas, plus the directions for implementing many of the featured projects. A great addition to the book collection of the ameture decorator.

                    Book Description

Beginning with his first published print in 1963, Jacob Lawrence produced a body of prints that is both highly dramatic and intensely personal. This new edition of Jacob Lawrence: Thirty Years of Prints (1963-1993) includes 19 new prints produced by Lawrence since 1993, including 7 from the Toussaint L'Ouverture series. The book includes an essay by Patricial Hills.

In his graphic work, as in his paintings, Lawrence turned to the lessons of history and to his own experience. From depictions of civil rights confrontations to scenes of daily life, these images present a vision of a common struggle toward unity and equality, a universal struggle seated in the depths of the human consciousness.
