5 out of 5 stars Day-to-day notices of life in the 1920s--Soviet style.......2005-01-15

Not since Gogol have I found such a bizarre, zany narrative, and such a peculiar narrator! Here Zoshchenko's narrator takes us through vignettes of everyday Soviet life, mostly of the NEP period, praising everything and making a fool of himself at the same time. The intense humanity of his characters come through, even (especially) when they're rioting in their collective kitchen over a coveted kitchen utensil. Very nice reading and re-reading for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Satire at its Best.......2000-03-19

When I read Nervous People for a Russian Lit class I was overwhelmed by the absurd humor. There hasn't been a funnier, politically poignant and appealing satirist since Lewis Carrol or Jonathan Swift.

Zoschenko etches out distinct parts of the Soviet landscape with hilarious spoofs, ridiculous characters and dark conclusions; Gogol would be proud.

Despite the passing of time and demise of the Soviet Union the humor still survives. What's poking fun at Russians can easily be translated to the same for American government and bureaucracy.

Admittedly this isn't for everyone. It's not all-age-encompassing like "Alice in Wonderland" or as current as PJ O'Rouke. Nevertheless it's worth a read for young and old adults.

4 out of 5 stars All-in-all, a feel-good story sure to brighten the holiday season. .......2007-07-11

I don't usually read historical/Victorian romances, but I'm mighty glad I decided to read this one! It was very amusing - the characters were fun and I can't resist enjoying a story about having a second chance with the one great love who got away. I like how this book illustrates the difference between comfortable love and passionate love, the latter being quite fiery but very satisfying. I loved Juliana as a supporting character, and sometimes she acted more like the older sister than the younger one. And, an Effington Christmas Ball or Christmas Lady's Tea sounded so special that I wish I could attend!!! My only criticism of this story was that it was a bit too long - although a lot of fun at first, towards the end, I grew weary from the game Nick and Elizabeth were playing with each other, and just wanted them to get on with the "happily ever after" part.

4 out of 5 stars A great Christmas based romance story !.......2006-03-02

A visit from Sir Nicholas is part of the Effington series. This story starts Christmas Eve 1852 with Lady Elizabeth Effington trying to decide between Charles or Nicholas - decisions are made and fates are sealed. The story continues 10 years later and Lady Elizabeth Effington has been given a second chance. The characters are strong and very funny ~ enjoy! I would recommend the Effington Series The Wedding Bargain, Husband List, Marriage Lesson, The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife, Love with the Proper Husband, The Lady in Question, The Pursuit of Marriage, A Visit from Sir Nicholas, When We Meet Again (my favorite and conclusion of the previous earlier stories The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife sub-plots) and the most recent Let It Be Love.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Holiday Effington Read.......2005-11-08

Well, another "Effington Family" read has been delightfully offered to fans of the historical romance genre. Ms. Alexander's trademark humor, and characters have been combined into another read that is truly a stand alone in a series that is beyond popular with fans the world over.

Lizzie has loved Nicholas almost from the moment she was introduced to the young orphaned boy. They have practically grown up together and although there is an "agreement" that she will marry one man...she still can't help but feel the attraction that now lies between Nicholas and herself. She finally decides on the eve of Nicholas' departure to gift him not only with a book, but with her feelings as well. But, this tender hearted young lady is about to be hurt and forced into a relationship that just might not be the best thing for her.

Nicholas is not about to let history repeat itself. His father had married his mother despite the fact that his Uncle Fredrick loved her as well. On top of this his father took off to make a fortune and instead ended up in dire straights. He wants to make something of himself instead of having it handed to him. This means leaving England and heading to the new world well, that's what, he's going to have to do. But fate will bring him back to the one and only woman that he will ever love. But, will it be too late and will the once loving Elizabeth be something much different?

Nicholas and Lizzie is a product of his or her own making. Still even though they are separated by several years, ignore what they're feeling they managed to get their happy ending. Some things did bother me about the read but they were minor when taken into consideration the entire book. Ms. Alexander has created a wonderful "Regency" family and it's fun to see that she has managed to continue it without becoming too stale or overdone. This is a quick read and one that fans will enjoy and appreciate.

3 out of 5 stars Changed my mind - this is a wonderful book.......2005-01-26

I initially wrote a review after reading about half of this book and getting caught up in some of the other reviews listed here. I am back to revise my review and tell you that this is a wonderfully touching book. All the items the critics have offered here I think are overblown - the characters are well developed, their motivations fully explained and the story line, is unique. Afterall while we always know the 2 characters are going to end up happily ever-after, in this book the main characters have already told us they were deeply in love with each other - circumstances let them part with each other and it wasn't until they were older and wiser that they were able to come together.

I do still have one criticism, I wish the author had brought in more of her original characters - Lizzie's parents were the stars of their own story several years ago but they never appear, for the most part, in this book. But on the other hand -if you've not been following the Effington stories you'll have no trouble picking up here.

4 out of 5 stars Has flaws, but still enjoyable. .......2005-01-15

A Visit From Sir Nicholas is an enjoyable read if you can look past the flaws. Elizabeth's reasons for denying what she feels for Nicholas are understandable, but she can get a little annoying. Nicholas and Elizabeth both make decisions that can be frustrating to the reader because the decisions they make that keeps them apart seem completely unneccesary to an outsider. However, Victoria Alexander has provided plenty of explanation concerning WHY the characters do what they do, so the characters actions are consistent with their personality. Once I understood Elizabeth and Nicholas, I enjoyed watching them both overcome their hangups and come together. I especially like how A Christmas Carol was incorporated into the book. I was touched by how Nicholas cherished the book because Elizabeth had given it to him.

Three cheers for Tor Books! The SFWA Grand Masters, Volume One, is a terrific idea: a collection of stories by the Golden Age writers (in this volume, Robert A. Heinlein, Jack Williamson, Clifford D. Simak, Fritz Leiber, and L. Sprague de Camp) who established the fundamentals of the science fiction genre ... the writers who first dazzled the world with their brilliant ideas and sent our imaginations zooming into the future. Representative short stories from each of the writers--such as a tale of the ever rich and strange world of Nehwon from Leiber--are accompanied by a sample of each writer's nonfiction, an overview of their life and career by Pohl--who knew them all--and a recommended reading list. All together, this volume is both the perfect way to introduce someone just discovering science fiction to the classic writers of the field, and ideal for veteran science fiction readers to remind themselves just why they love the genre so much. 5 out of 5 stars The First of the Grand Master Books.......2006-12-14

I admit that my background in the classics of sci-fi and fantasy is weak. So, I snatched up Volume I of The SFWA Grand Masters to see what these authors wrote and how constructed stories and used language. If I have any disappointments at all, it's that so many writers since these five have used the basic premises that the stories seemed familiar, and that's not a dig against them, it's a complement (hell, I've already come up with a great character and premise, myself).

Here is the list of authors and stories:

                Heinlein, Robert A., (1907-1988)
--The Roads Must Roll, 1940. (novelette) (Astounding, June, 1940.) SFHF

--The Firefly Tree, 1997. (short short) (Science Fiction Age, #28, May, 1997.)

                Simak, Clifford D., (1904-1988)
                --Desertion, 1944. (Astounding, November, 1944.)
--Founding Father, 1957. (Galaxy, May, 1957.)
--Grotto of the Dancing Bear, 1980. (Analog, April, 1980.) Hugo

                de Camp, L. Sprague, (1907-2000)
--A Gun for Dinosaur, 1956. (Galaxy, March, 1956.)
--Little Green Men from Afar, 1976. (article) (The Humanist, July, 1976.)
--Living Fossil, 1939. (Astounding, February, 1939.)

                Leiber, Fritz, (1910-1992)
                --Sanity, 1944. (Astounding, April, 1944.)
--The Mer She, 1978. (novelette) (Heroes and Horrors, Whispers Press, 1978.)
--A Bad Day for Sales, 1953. (Galaxy, July, 1953.)

For me Heinlein's stories were the best, but I've always been a fan. Some of the other highlights, however:

Jack Williamson's With Folded Hands feels like a story that has spawned so many other robots replace human stories throughout the ages. It's spooky, straightforward, and masterfully simple.

The Mer She by Fritz Leiber is a Grey Mouser story and was really engaging, a fun read which kept me in wonderment as to where it was going.

Desertion by Clifford Simak is a story I've read before and it remains one of my all-time favorites. It deserves to be a movie, and now that the technology can make that happen, I hope it comes to be.

Great stories, great authors, and a great collection. I'll be reading volume II soon.

                - CV Rick

1 out of 5 stars Another Bust for Fred Pohl.......2004-05-29

It is extemely difficult to select stories from five of the greatest SF writers (add Clarke and Asimov and you have the top seven) of the 20th century to give the whole volume a negative, downbeat tone, but Fred Pohl has managed it. If you like your stories upbeat and hopeful for the human race (in the editorial fashion of John Campbell) this book is a definite "save your money." I have been reading these authors since the 1950s, and I can't imagine a worse set of choices.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Breadth of the Genre.......2003-02-17

firstly, this book is from the "golden age" of science fiction - generally, the time span of the 1950s - late 1960s. of course, there is quite the sf debate to be had as to whether this was really a "golden age" or not, but that's left out of this review ;) there are three volumes, each containing assorted works by five grandmaster award winners.

essentially, the grandmaster award "may not be awarded more than six times in ten years" and is given to a contemporary (re: living) science fiction author.

heinlein's stories are very good - they take up approximately 1/3 of the book, though. "the roads must roll" was quite dated, and definitely the worst of the bunch; though that alone is completely relative, by itself it wouldn't have been nearly so bad. the rest of his stories are magnificant, and he remains arguably one of the best science fiction writers to ever put the pen to the paper.

jack williamson, clifford simak, l. sprague de camp, and fritz leiber all produce fantastic stories for this anthology, as well.

one of the best aspects of this anthology is that it offers stories which may not otherwise have been discovered. frederick pohl does an appropriate and respectful job introducing the authors, and his love of the genre is apparant. this book should not be overlooked and is one of the most valuable science fiction short story anthologies i have come across. highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Humorous, and Thought-Provoking.......2002-02-22

I'd been frustrated by the "Golden Age" because it is often written or talked about and is often impossible to find, even in used bookstores. Heinlein can still be found, but even works of his, some considered classics, are out-of-print. Anthologies of those times are difficult to find, and modern anthologies often throw in a "Golden Age" story as an afterthought.

This anthology is different. Each of the authors featured in this volume (Heinlein, Williamson, Simak, de Camp, and Leiber) were the "Golden Age".

With the exception of two stories by Fritz Leiber ("Sanity" & "A Bad Day for Sales") whose pessimism put me off, each story in this volume captured and held my attention throughout. The themes of these stories inspired my own speculations, and unlike much of modern science fiction, the entertainment value alone makes this volume worth purchasing.

Frederik Pohl has written succinct, informative introductions and recommends further reading which has sent me to the used bookstores already. More importantly, however, he has chosen great stories and has let the authors speak for themselves.

Personally, I would recommend "The Year of the Lottery" ( a humorous story about the ultimate bad day), "With Folded Hands" (inhuman "perfection" taken to the extreme), all of Clifford D. Simak, and "Gun for Dinosaur" (30 years ahead of Jurassic Park and infinitely superior). However, cracking this book at any place will lead to good results.

5 out of 5 stars A great mix of familar stories and little-seen material.......2000-07-27

Frederik Pohl has done a fantastic job of assembling this collection of material. Himself one of the first 15 SFWA grand masters, Pohl's personal reflections on each of these authors are worth the purchase price by themselves.

For each writer, Pohl has selected at least one seminal gem from their body of work, and at least one neglected treasure, with additional pieces that show the tremendous range each of these authors was/is capable of.

Although most of Heinlein's fiction is still in print, these days it can be hard to find the work of these other Grand Masters, especially the older material. That makes this volume especially valuable.

For myself, Clifford Simak and Fritz Leiber are two of my all-time favorite writers, and I am happy to see there work exposed to a new generation of readers, especially in this context. Both the Science Fiction Writers of America and Frederik Pohl should be applauded for this worthy tribute.

4 out of 5 stars Great Study Bible.......2006-12-30

I have a couple of Study Bibles, and although the NKJV is not my favorite translation, I truly enjoy this Bible. Just starting with the New Testament in Matthew, you can read the prophecy that was fulfilled by the first coming of Christ. Did you know how many prophecies there are about Christ, there are hundreds, including the birth place, the family lineage, the virgin birth, the amount of money he was to be betrayed for, etc. These were all written hundreds (seven hundred from Micah) of years before his birth.

This is how we know the coming prophecies are true, because the previous ones have already been proven out with the Birth, death and resurrection of Christ. So what about the second coming? Some of these have already come to pass, Duet 30:5 Israel returns to its land (also Amos 9:14). Most of them will happen at some future date that only god knows about (Matt 24:36)

If you have an interest in Prophecy, then this Bible is a great tool.

1 out of 5 stars Why continue to be deceived..........2006-06-26

Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins, and others in the Pre-Trib circle, such as Ed Hindson, Tommy Ice, Chuck Missler, etc., continue to put forth the same deceptions that Hal Lindsey popularized decades ago. The notion of a pre-tribulation rapture is foreign to scripture, it is foreign to the teachings of the early Church, and it is grooming the Church for destruction through ignorance and lack of preparation for what is really coming. These men are novices and not prophecy "experts" or "scholars" by any stretch of the imagination; they are those who tickle the ears of gullible Christians. Why continue to be deceived? Tim Cohen, in his excellent book, "The AntiChrist and a Cup of Tea," provides biblically sound and testable evidence to show that the coming AntiChrist is known NOW. Not only that, the same author (Tim Cohen) has now put out the strongest presentation on the whole issue of the rapture EVER offered to the saints of God in Christ: "The REAL Rapture". If you really want to know the truth about the timing of the coming rapture, then you need to hear Tim Cohen's "The REAL Rapture" (based on a volume in his forthcoming "Messiah, History, and the Tribulation Period" series (see Prophecy House's web site, prophecyhouse dot com, for details on these items).

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Beginner's Prophecy Bible.......2003-08-31

I have many study Bibles and this one is the one I take to church and pull out for general reading and devotionals. It is dedicated to the readers of the "Left Behind" series and for people who have become interested in Bible prophecy for the first time. The notes inside tie the prophetic themes together, and there is a comprehensive table of prophecies concerning Jesus in the back. Interspersed within the books are articles done by the prominent pre-tribulation scholars about topics such as "Heaven", "The Battle of Armageddon", "The Messianic Hope", "Israel in Tribulation", "God's Plan of Salvation", "The Rapture", "The Church Age", just to name a few. Studying prophecy helps you see how the Bible is all tied together, and how one part relates to another. In addition, there are center column references that allow you to explain and compare one verse with several others. The color pictures and charts are a bonus. This Bible will be around to edify believers long after the "Left Behind" series has been left behind. Buy it even if you're not interested in "Left Behind" series.

2 out of 5 stars Questionable "pre-trib" notes, bad translation.......2002-07-26

First, let me address the NKJV translation. I'm not usually one to blast a translation as junk, especially since I believe the best Bible is the one that people read. But the NKJV is a pretty skeevy translation, in my estimation. It is so hard to read that you may as well stick with the original KJV. Not only that, but it retains the absolutely worst elements of the KJV (a broken verse format) and combines it with the WORST elements of the NASB (capitalized He's for God). The NKJV is such a massively awkward translation, and whatever benefits it offers for being literal are lost when one realizes that it isn't a literal translation of an reliable New Testament text - it's based on exactly the same manuscripts as the KJV, even when scholarly opinion is universal that the KJV was wrong (e.g., the "book" of life rather than the "tree" of life in the closing verses of Revelation).

That said, Tim LaHaye seems bent on reviving Hal Lindsay's ideas, and that is a Very Bad Thing. I'm still waiting for one verse that even suggests a pre-trib rapture.

                        Book Description

Beloved perhaps because of their importance in the natural world, the colors blue and white in decoration appear fresh, clean and at once classic and contemporary. This color combination is easy to work with; hues of cobalt, sky, aqua and powder blue (to name just a few) mix effortlessly with whites of many shades. Through informative text and inspirational photographs, Blue & White in Your Home invites you to enjoy the refreshing ambience of this pretty palette.

Beginning with an overview of the effects possible with various blues and whites, the book goes on to explain how to achieve them. It shows a range of blue and white shades and patterns in paints, wallcoverings, fabrics and ceramics; devotes a chapter to blue and white table settings; presents ideas for incorporating blue and white accessories and collectibles in your decor; and shows how the color scheme is at home outdoors.

This is a book full of inspiring ways to use a color combination that has been popular for centuries. While I prefer the rooms that show soft blues mixed with creamy whites, brighter tones are pictured as well. The pictures and text work together in showing the reader how to create livable interiors with the feel of romantic elegance that is common to all of the decorating books published by Victoria magazine.

The title of Ted Koppel's memoir, Off Camera: Private Thoughts Made Public, promises opinions that its author wouldn't deliver on camera, where he's been the anchor of ABC's popular Nightline program since 1980. And, indeed, he's blistering at times in this book, which is essentially a daily journal from 1999. That year began between President Clinton's impeachment by the House of Representatives and his trial in the Senate. Here's Koppel delivering his prognosis of the situation: "Whichever way it goes, it will leave a nasty aftertaste. The President and First Lady will speak piously of national reconciliation, while their loyalists ram the rockets' red glare up the tailpipes of the right-wing fanatics, who have confused low morals with high crimes." Koppel's comments are not always so interesting, but he's reliably candid. He mentions that Jordan's late King Hussein "had his share of adulterous relationships," that Dan Quayle "is not stupid. He is also likable. But you would feel uncomfortable serving under him in a platoon," and that Henry Hyde once informed him privately that "he was incontinent following his prostate surgery."

There's no particular theme to the book; these pages simply collect the thoughts of an important newsman during the course of a year (whose noteworthy events included not just the Clinton trial but also NATO's war with Serbia). Sometimes they're pompous: "I'm off for a meeting with Bill Bradley. It's at his request, which is a clear signal that he's running for the presidency." Sometimes they're funny: "Let's combine all the awards ceremonies for the communications and entertainment industries and name that one event after the single piece of equipment used by all of us--the microphone. I suggest calling the occasion 'the Phonies.'" Koppel is occasionally offbeat, as when he compares George W. Bush to Vanna White, and often informative, as when he's recommending books like Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden or Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (which he once gave as a gift to Clinton). Off Camera is an eclectic package of thoughts and diversions that will by turns intrigue, frustrate, and entertain readers. --John J. Miller

                            5 Cds / 5 hours

Here, closely observed with an insider's eye, are all the significant matters of 1999--from the Clinton impeachment and the war in Kosovo to the transformation of the global economy, and even the phenomenon of Viagra.  Here, too, are the people (both on and off camera) who made the news--from Slobodan Milosevic to Hillary Rodham Clinton to Michael Jordan to John F. Kennedy Jr.

But Koppel doesn't stop there: he uses these personalities and events as jumping-off points for other discussions.  Memory takes him back to England where he lived until he was 13, to family and friends, and to memorable moments in his career of almost 40 years.  He discusses racial intolerance and brutality towards homosexuals.  And he examines such cultural phenomena as misleading advertising in Sunday supplements and the price paid for one of Mark McGwire's home-run balls.

Here is the voice we know from Nightline--intelligent, curious, opinionated, witty--reminding us in entertaining and thought-provoking ways that even the most public events reverberate in our private lives.

One of America's most admired television newsmen now gives us an intimate chronicle of the final year of the twentieth century. In his engrossing narrative, the year's personalities and events not only are themselves made vivid but also lead to wide-ranging discussions of the past and of expectations of things to come. Here, closely observed from an insider's viewpoint, are the significant matters of 1999--from the Clinton impeachment and the war in Kosovo to the mass-marketing of Viagra. Here are the people (both on and off camera) who made the news--from Slobodan Milosevi´c to Hillary Rodham Clinton to Michael Jordan to John F. Kennedy Jr. to King Hussein. And Koppel's book moves on yet another level as events trigger memories of his own past, providing a more personal resonance to his telling of the history we all share. He takes us back to the England in which he lived until he was thirteen. He revisits his powerful experiences as an interviewer investigating prison abuses and probing the violence in our schools. He discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the media; he talks about racial intolerance, about brutality toward homosexuals, about the absence of political leadership. He also examines such cultural phenomena as our obsession with celebrity and the impact of great theater and overhyped movies. Here is the voice we know from Nightline--intelligent, curious, opinionated, witty, concerned--reminding us in entertaining and thought-provoking ways that even the most public events reverberate in our private lives.

Ted Koppel is quite eloquent and has many interesting views but the audiobook (unabridged) lacks any deep and profound views or analysis. Nevertheless, well read and not boring. Good for long drives or plane flights, especially now that it is selling at a discount price.

                            4 out of 5 stars 1999 Daily Journal Of A Public Figure.......2005-08-21

Nightline anchor and legendary tele-journalist Ted Koppel set out on January 1, 1999 with an interesting idea. He would write one entry per day in a diary that would record the events in his own life and in the world around him.

                            Admirable.

Koppel's notes on the goings-on in 1999 seem oddly distant in this post-911 world of 2005. Was the last year of the century just passed really quite as innocent as it seems in this record of a journalist and his travels across the world? That was the biggest point of notice I came away with from this remarkable read: exactly how much our society and the greater world has altered in so small a time.

That said, it is still worthwhile to read through Koppel's thoughts on the happenings of that year and to gain perspective on all that went on in a top-ranking network journalist's life. In those twelve months, Koppel traveled to at least four continents, met with dozens of noteworthies, and also managed to fit in time at home, where he tells us of the joys of something small like a redecorating project after having spent so many of the previous weeks in and out of war zones, jets, vans, and studios. Koppel is never shy about giving his opinion and sometimes I admired his views, at other times he frankly ticked me off. That's probably someplace in his job description.

I've heard Ted Koppel is retiring soon, and I wonder if he intends to devote more time to writing once his days in front of the camera are done? If this book is any indication of what that output might be, then I hope so.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the bad reviews!.......2003-10-09

Ted Koppel's Off Camera is a caring and informative view into just that, his thoughts and daily activities off camera. Mr Koppel provides us daily journal entries from the year 1999. From Monica to the strains of reporting from Kosovo. I loved reading this book.

2 out of 5 stars Diary copied over into book with no editing........2002-04-23

My first thought in his first couple entries was that he was trying a little to hard to be funny ala Dennis Miller or Jay Leno. However, then I realized that he wasn't, he was just blurting out his thoughts from each day (and almost every day).

I feel there was not much cohesion throughout the book. He spends a lot of time on the war in Kosovo, as that was a big event during that year. However, he puts in little tidbits about his growing up and his new house or something irrelevant. Even though it was meant to be his personal thoughts on various topics, I felt he should have organized the material a little bit.

On the good side, it was interesting hearing about the difficulties of being a reporter during the war, and getting some of that insider information. Similarly, it was interesting hearing his perspective from having been around for a while in the journalism business.

Overall, I made it through the whole book, but every once in a while while listening to it (Audio CD version), I would think, "Now why did he include that?" I feel this work could have been improved through some editting and some thoughtful exclusions or reorganization of the material.

1 out of 5 stars Is this the best you can do, Ted?.......2001-12-12

...The dust cover should be a clue that this book is trivial. Here is Koppel, wearing a leather jacket and holding a stick. If that photo interests you, you will love this book. It is filled with self-indulgent information about Koppel and his grandchildren. It would have been a better book, perhaps, had Koppel chosen to write about the leather jacket and the stick.
Readers who are able to overlook Koppel's arrogance will find little insight into international events. First, these events are quite dated. Kosovo, Monica and Viagra are not fresh, riveting subjects. Secondly, Koppel doesn't have the time to give us thoughtful insight. He appears to be jotting down a few bedtime thoughts about his day. And so often his predictions and views of current events prove wrong.
What I came away with is the realization that much of our daily news stories are fleeting, insignificant events. ...
