Book Description
In these tales Gogol guides us through the elegant streets of St Petersburg, the city erected by force and ingenuity on the marshes of the Neva estuary. Something of the deception and violence of the city's creation seems to lurk beneath its harmonious facade, however, and it confounds its inhabitants with false dreams and absurd visions - `nothing is what it seems!' warns Gogol. St Petersburg is also the setting for Marriage, Gogol's satire on courtship and cowardice. Finally, for The Government Inspector, indisputably Russia's greatest comedy, we move to the provinces although even here St Petersburg's preoccupation with status and appearances makes its presence felt.

Another great story by Heidi Betts!.......2006-02-17
Beth Curtis adored Connor Riordan, her brother's best friend. She had been secretly in love with him for years. Once, Connor and Beth give into an unexpected moment of passion. Beth was sure that this was just the beginning of her and Connor's new relationship, so she couldn't have been more stunned or hurt when Connor goes out of his way to avoid her after that night.
Seven years have past, years where hurt feelings and bitterness have caused Beth to avoid Connor. Now a high powered entertainment attorney, Beth is home for her bother's wedding, and Connor is his best man. Forced to spend time with the man who hurt her so badly is not Beth's idea of a good time. Connor knows that he made a mistake seven years ago. He's spent years trying to get Beth to give him a chance to apologize, but she's made it impossible by not even spending a moment alone with him.
Now they are forced to share a house while Beth's brother is on his honeymoon. Connor is determined to use this opportunity to get Beth to forgive him so that they can return to the friendship they had before that night. However, Connor never expects to find that the passion between them is stronger than ever. He quickly discovers that friendship is the last thing he wants from Beth. But can he convince her to forgive him for the mess he made of things in the past and take a chance on him?
I have to say that I am loving Heidi Betts! She is quickly becoming my favorite Silhouette author. Seven Year Seduction is the perfect quick romance fix! Both Connor and Beth have to face the past before they can work on the future, giving the story a great deal of emotional depth. The passion that burns between them makes for scintillating love scenes. Readers of contemporary romance will most definitely find themselves satisfied by Seven Year Seduction.

Ursula K. Le Guin revisits her popular Hainish universe with four interconnected stories that together weave a tapestry of revolution and political turmoil. Le Guin tells the tale of two worlds where decades of slavery and class distinction are about to come to an end. She begins at the end with the story of a woman who survived the perilous times and now must face what comes after. Then in turn come tales of a naive envoy, an aloof observer forced to choose sides, and a young slave who wins freedom, only to confront the bonds of her own mind.
Book Description
At the far end of our universe, on the twin planets of Werel and Yeowe, all humankind is divided into "assets" and "owners," tradition and liberation are at war, and freedom takes many forms. Here is a society as complex and troubled as any on our world, peopled with unforgettable characters struggling to become fully human. For the disgraced revolutionary Abberkam, the callow "space brat" Solly, the haughty soldier Teyeo, and the Ekumen historian and Hainish exile Havzhiva, freedom and duty both begin in the heart, and success as well as failure has its costs.
In this stunning collection of four intimately interconnected novellas, Ursula K. Le Guin returns to the great themes that have made her one of America's most honored and respected authors.

In black and white.......2005-04-17
Four Ways to Forgiveness is what sf writer LeGuin calls a "story suite"--four interconnected short stories, one of which takes up nearly half the book. All four stories are set on the planet Werel and its colony of Yeowe, where a dominant black-skinned race holds a primarily white-skinned population in slavery. Werel and Yeowe have both been contacted by the Ekumen, the interplanetary federation of LeGuin's future history, but neither can join until the problems of slavery and gender imbalance have been solved. In "Betrayals", two old people find tenderness together after long and difficult lives; in "Forgiveness Day", the brash young Envoy of the Ekumen is kidnapped, together with the stiff-necked bodyguard she despises, and falls in love with him. "A Man of the People" is the story of Havzhiva, born to the pueblo culture of Hain, the parent world of all human races and cultures. Feeling out of place, he goes off to become a historian and winds up as the Envoy to Yeowe, the colony world where the slaves have successfully revolted and become free. It is mirrored by "A Woman's Liberation," the memoir of Rakam, born a slave, used sexually by her mistress as a child, used by men at another plantation in her adolescence, who escapes to Yeowe with the help of another Hainish envoy, the mysterious Esdardon Aya (whose name means Old Music) and becomes a teacher and, eventually, the lover of Havzhiva.
I love this book and have read it repeatedly. While I don't like all of LeGuin's work equally well, some of her books I have re-read many times and been deeply influenced by--the Earthsea books, The Dispossessed, this one, and A Fisherman of the Inland Sea, which I am now reading yet again. LeGuin writes science fiction based on sociology, anthropology, biology; she's not interested in shiny spaceships or the technology that runs them, and if she writes about conquering colonists, it's usually from the viewpoint of the conquered. Plus, she can do so much with her rich, spare language. If you like unconventional sf, try LeGuin.
Science Fiction literature.......2004-12-17
Fine SF explores the nature of the human condition under special circumstances--with observations of lasting import. LeGuin does that in her works. While this one, a collection of 4 interrelated novellas, is not her best work (see The Left Hand of Darkness or The Dispossessed), it is very fine work nonetheless. I like it much better than her short story collections (e.g. Orsinian Tales). This book is about the relationships between politics and people. It also speaks of the differences and similarities between the internal and the external such that changing external circumstances may not have much lasting effect if the internal circumstances (within the people) don't change. There is an interrelationship here too. There are several pithy quotes for my collection in it as well:
Love of God and country is like fire, a wonderful friend, a terrible enemy; only children play with fire. p.57
To live simply is most complicated. p. 90
The right use of knowledge is fulfillment. p.117
Loquacity is half of diplomacy ... The other half is silence. p.127
Ignorance defends itself savagely. p.197
A fresh look at slavery, expoitation and subjugation.........2002-09-08
A marvellous book, the four stories of Yeowe & Werel intertwined subtly and beautifully.
The issues of slavery and female subjugation, so central to any moral history of real humankind on real planet earth, are treated with Ursula's characteristic compassion and humanity, in the context of an imaginary planet and its colony-satellite.
The characters of these stories, their acts of bravery cowardice revolt submission, are so familiar from earth's own history of colonizations and exploitations! As always I marvel at how LeGuin, White American and presumably priviledged, knows so well the hearts of the enslaved and the colonized.
How familiar to see the lives of slaves who go on century after century without thinking to revolt!
How familiar to see the slave who, at the moment of choice, remains on the side of the master and sticks to the familiar, instead of striding into the unknown world of freedom!
And how familiar to see oppression and war and famine continuing, in different form, after freedom from the external oppressors.
(Former colonies of the European oppressors will remember sorely how brown/black bosses promptly took over the former_roles of the white masters after liberation.)
And how familiar to see, the lonely and driven activist, the former slave who wants all enslavements to end, the few moral beings in an often immoral world.
The cry of slave peoples on Werel -- "Oh, Oh, Ye-o-we" -- so mournful, so similar to the bittersad poetry of colonized peoples everywhere.
Actually, the four ways have now become five ways, as LeGuin has written one more story set in Werel, in the collection "The Birthday of the World".

Just Okay.......2001-08-12
Readable, but that's about it -- this book lacks the energy and complexity of previous brilliant LeGuin works. It is mostly a much less rigorous reworking of the extraordinary novel "The Dispossessed", with an inadequte attempt to address the issue of Ekumen superiority vs."native" wisdom -- the question which formed the center of the astonishingly brilliant "Left Hand of Darkness." All the conflicts here drift away, not only unresolved but unfaced in the rigorous way I expect from LeGuin. Never gets to the main issues, either those between the twin planets or regarding their relations with the Ekumen. Derivative and disappointing -- read "Left Hand," or LeGuin's neglected masterpiece "Malafrena" for sustained thought, not vagaries.

Book Description
The first book on Santería’s holiest divination system to thoroughly explore each family of odu and how their actions and reactions affect the spiritual development of the client.
• Includes the major considerations for sacrifice, providing the diviner with ways to placate and supplicate the Afro-Cuban deities known as orishas.
• Demonstrates how to properly end a reading so that negative vibrations are fully removed from the diviner's home.
• Provides a thoroughly detailed description of each of the 12 families of odu that exist in the diloggun--from Okana through Ejila Shebora.
The diloggun is more than a tool of divination. It is a powerful transformational process, and the forces that are set in motion when it is cast determine the future evolution of the adherent. The Diloggun is the first book to explore this Afro-Cuban oracle from the perspective of diaspora orisha worship. It is also the first book to explore the lore surrounding this mysterious oracle, which is the living Bible of one of the world's fastest growing faiths.
The twelve families of odu that are available to the diviner include 192 omo odu, the children of the odu, and each of these patterns or letters has its own proverbs, meanings, prohibitions, and sacrifices. Ocha'ni Lele provides the secret but essential information that the adept diviner needs to know to ensure that every element affecting a client's spiritual development is taken into consideration during a reading. His book is also the first to detail how to properly end a session so that negative vibrations are absorbed by the orishas and fully removed from the diviner's home. For those seeking the wisdom of ancient Africa, The Diloggun is an indispensable guide to the mysteries of the orishas.

infomative.......2007-05-14
I am an initiate and this book has helped me understand the odduns a bit more. Its nothing like sitting in a reading with your elders and learning that way, but the book is very explanitory and has usfull information that you can use to complete various ebboses, recipies, etc..
I highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to understand a bit more anout the odduns... Again this does not replace what your elders can teach you or what you can learn listening and learning from hands on..

Enough already!.......2007-01-30
I am so tired of priest within these tradtions ( Ifa, Santaria, Lucumi, etc) fighting and constantly putting down one another. It is truly a turn off to anyone outside the tradition as it is obvious jealousy and ego that fuels much of it. So what if it does not have everything that you believe it should. Write something yourself that reflects what you believe should be included rather than putting down anothers effort. Knowledge and wisdom are infinite and no one person has it all. It would promote your tradtion much better for you all to collaborate on some works rather than to spout bitter statements against another. The roots of this tradition lay the foundations for the world yet you bastardize it with your low level thinking and egotistical postulations. Is there no love, tolorance, compassion, or even encouragement in this tradition or is the key to tear each other down?
Beautiful Book.......2007-01-18
I am in the process of being initiated in the Lukumi religion. I wanted this book very badly because all I have heard is wonderful things about it. After I purchased it, I began to read. The writing was absolutely hypnotic! I could not put it down. I would read it on my break at work, and would get upset when my break was over because I just wanted to read more. It reads like awesome short stories. I highly recommend this book, should you choose to be part of Lukumi!
Ase' to this book and its author!

A good try but..........2006-11-26
I am a priest within the yoruba religion, young in years (6)but I have read all that I can find on the religion, both from the Orisha and the Ifa perspective. I find that it is impossible to expect that the fullness of this religion to be related by any one book, teacher or class. The Yoruba religion is rich in history, philosophy and tradition. The two prominent systems of divination, Ifa and Dilogun are likewise complex and not meant to be fully comprehended within a few weeks, months, or years of study. With all this said I move on to my review. The book is informative but one must question the accuracy and source of the information. The high praise that I see heaped upon it here may more speak of the commentors' depth of understanding rather than the excellence of the work. We are all works in progress, and this work may help many to better understand dilogun divination. Ultimately however, if one seeks to reach higher levels of understanding within the religion, one will have to unlearn some of the information given within this work. Lastly I would like to add that I have spoken to several of my elders within the religion (babalawo and oriate), and the concensus is that this book needs work. I am happy that someone is trying to tackle that difficult task of teaching dilogun from a book but this book should not be taken as the ultimate gospel nor as the last piece of the puzzle.

Book Description
Elegant and utilitarian glasswares have been made for over thirty centuries. The manufacture of cut glass in America stems from a history that reaches back to ancient Egypt, while engraved glass was known in classical Rome. In this excellent new edition of a classic work, the author traces the American phases of this fascinating history by describing the products of major and minor manufacturers. See the American industry evolve from its early days of imitative work, through highly imaginative products in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to a declining mediocrity in the 1920s and '30s. This book has been established as the "bible" in this field, and the addition of 150 new photos and fully updated text and pricing information make this edition the best yet. Glass collectors will treasure this unequalled reference.

A superior reference book on American Brilliant glass.......2007-07-03
Superior book on American Brilliant glass, July 3, 2007
By E. Amos (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
If you want a really good set of books on American Brilliant Cut glass you need Pearson's 3 volume set (Enclyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass). They are out of print and often expensive, even if used.
Although every single writer on this subject has made a few identification errors, Pearson makes very few, and does make corrections and additions in Volume 3, to his previous books. Some writers on this subject material have been calculated by some American Brilliant experts to have glass identifcation errors of up to 30%. By comparison, Pearson has far less errors.
Volume three "American Cut and Engraved Glass (Geometric motifs)" published in 1978, deals with geometic patterns arranged in alphabetical order starting with beading, blocks and bullseyes and combinations thereof. Canes, hobstars, hobnail, stawberry diamond, double cross cut, diamond, fans, flashed fans, flutes, stars, cross cut squares, zippers, pyramidal squares, prisms, panels, etc. are included in the over 700 illustrations of the various cominations of patterns. Pearson's schematic is very helpful for quickly locating and identifying cut glass patterns. There are sections on the colored or "cut to clear" ABP glass.
A pattern index for all 3 volumes of the set, is a the back of the book. A general index for all 3 volumes in this series is included. There is a Relative Value Guide and a Relative Value Chart. There are supplements for Vol. 1 (Geometric Conceptions) and Vol 2 (Realistic patterns), a supplement of corrections and addenda for previous Pearsons, and a bibliography.
The front part of the book also includes some short chapters on interesting happenings and experiences that the reader, collector or dealer will hopefully find amusing or educational in his pursuit of glass treasures. I found the chapter on whether to buy the damaged antique, very helpful. Dealers may find how to collect on a check returned for insufficient funds, amusing. (It is NOT your usual story.) There is also a section on etiquette for the buyer and seller of antiques. This is a book one can also read for pleasure as well as being a superior reference book.
Michael J. Pearson and his wife, Dorothy became well-known dealers of American cut, engraved and cameo glass. Although Michael had been a full time lawyer, he retired & devoted full time to the study of ABP glass and being an antiques dealer, in 1963. They also wrote: American Cut Glass for the Discriminating Collector (1965) and A Study of American Cut Glass (1969). Mrs. Pearson was also a member of the Appraisers Assioc. of America and became a recognized authority on glass, silver and china. They were both members of the American Cut Glass Association, which currently has a very helpful website.

Volume two deals with the Realistic patterns or subjects. If you are collecting glass with floral motifs, fruit, leaves, birds, insects, butterflies, corn, other vegetables, animals (deer, lamb, cows, horses, fish etc.) this would be a helpful book. It also covers colored ABP glass aka "cut-to-clear" in these motifs. Many patterns show both intaglio or etched cutting, as well as cut glass motifs of a geometric nature, but all have some realistic patterns from nature on them.
A pattern index is a the back of the book. A Good Starting Point..........2006-07-06
Experienced paper crafters and collage artists may find this book rather monotonous. The techniques used are pretty basic, but will spark your imagination for planning more complicated pieces.
The focus is on creating and/or embellishing home projects; lamps, bowls, platters, folding tables, even chairs aren't off limits for this author. I was impressed with her array of choices! The step-by-step directions are superb. Full color pictures and well-written directions leave noting for the imagination. Interestingly, the author makes frequent use of the Fiskar's Shape Cutter tool, which was intriguing because I've never used one. I was also glad to learn about Pour-On Ply Resin, a fantastic product that will eliminate the need to apply many coats of varnish.
Although I am hesitant to recommend this book to all levels of papercrafters, Papercrafting is an excellent starting point for those who are beginning to dabble in this art form.
Enjoy.

Housekeeping Challenged?.......2007-09-26
Ok, I confess. I am not a natural housekeeper. In fact, I do everything I can to avoid all things homemaking as long as I can.
I'm getting better, but I'm still struggling. My dream is to hire a housekeeper/cook - sort of like "Alice" from the Brady bunch - remember her?
Well, if you're like me, and can't afford an Alice, this is the book for you. It's very practical, and laugh-out-loud-funny (just ask my teenage son who was startled and embarrassed by a loud guffaw bursting from his mother in the waiting room at the dentist's last week!)

She focuses on how your personality affects your home environment and takes homemaking to a realistic, fun, and energetic place. Take a moment to determine your homemaking personality and see how to find time to enjoy the rest of your life.
Making the Unavoidable Easier.......2005-03-14
My distaste for cleaning goes almost as deep as my love of reading. Both have prompted a long search for that magical book, the one that somehow turns cleaning and organizing into a wonderful and exciting task. While this book may not be that particular panacea, it goes further than any other that I have read. I love the concept of amtching your method to your personality and Ms. Keeley's humor makes me laugh even when I am knee deep in the laundry. It was a wonderful read and I enjoyed it very much. Now, if I could only find the front door . . .
Ms. Keeley's Book.......2005-01-14
Wow.... How did she do that?
As I have cleaned and reorganized my home to flow more compatibly with the real me, I have laughed and been entertained as if I had invited my best friend over to keep me company.
