Enjoyable.......2006-06-12

This is the first time I've read anything by Ellen Gilchrist and I was enthralled with her writing style. I enjoyed the stories and liked the characters and given her upbringing, I was not surprised that she would embrace the life of a wife and mother - I think it made sense that she would be happy to finally have a normal life and give her kids a normal childhood. I really like the characters - Freddy with his amazing generousity - his friendship with Neiman. I liked the different personalities of the children, Neiman's overbearing mother. I loved the little story about Father Donny and the hairdresser.

I was expecting Sandy to come up again - thought we were a bit led on with that one - also thought all the happy endings were a little too much.

All in all, however, I really enjoyed this book and the characters - and especially Gilchrist's writing. I will definitely be going back and reading her earlier works.

I must say that the whole reason I ordered this book was because of an English class I am taking. I really enjoyed the book and I also appreciated the expediant delievery. Originally I had ordered the book from a site that my professor recommended. When the book was over a month late I decided to do what I should have done in the first place--order from Amazon. The book ended up being fantastic and I will ALWAYS order from Amazon. As far as the book, the author is very talented. She creates a world for the reader that we as humans may miss on a daily basis. I cannot wait for Ms. Gilchrist to come out with a sequel to it. The book was great plain and simple.

Utterly disappointing.......2005-12-26

Ugh. I had high hopes as I plunged into the first Nora Jane story, "The Blue House", being initially charmed by adolescent NJ and her Good (capital G) grandmother-- but the magic quickly dissipated. The review by Marron of Boston was spot on. The characters are too flat to capture our empathy. The conflicts are contrived and feel stuck on to the story rather than part of any engaging weave. Loose ends irritate. Freddie, the rich and always perfect husband, is less than a caricature to the point where I could care less when he contracted cancer. I sense that the author has skills that were unfortunately not employed here.

This book made me feel a bit Scrooge-like. I just couldn't get enchanted with Nora Jane: strong, exquisitely gorgeous Nora Jane, who drives men wild with desire; has a fabulously rich and devoted husband and one loyal male friend (but no women friends I can recall), plus two amazingly gifted (of course!) daughters, and a charismatic little son; and enjoys frequent sumptuous dinners at Chez Panisse....

I came away with no sense of her inner life or three dimensionality, or even what made her so appealing to those who are so devoted to her (her husband fell in love with her after she threated to shoot him! Such is the power of her beauty). There was also a whole subplot about Iranian assassins that I found racist, and Nora Jane's embracing the role "housewife and mother" (her words) in 1980's Berkeley, California, seemed frankly a tad retrograde. Not a smidgen of conflict, given her social context?

I wanted to be enchanted. Instead, I felt like I was "supposed" to be enchanted, but it never happened.

At nineteenth she heads west where her mentor Sandy teaches her to rob people using a prop gun. In the San Francisco Bay area, she tries to rob bookstore owner Freddy Harwood, but instead of leaving him in a wasteland, she ends up sharing his hot tub. She loves both her men and soon gives birth to twins. She chooses Freddy and with him raises their daughters in Berkeley. Over the next two decades, Nora Jane continues her belief to gravitate towards those you love; others follow her lofty ambition. All is joyful in Mudville until Freddy has leukemia. The fourteen short stories have appeared in other publications over the years, but the novella Fault Lines is a new entry that adds to Nora Jane's cycle of life and love. The tales are all well written as most fans already know, but for the first time they appear in one book. The poignant effervescent heroine is perhaps at her best in NORA JANE A LIFE IN STORIES because the well written often amusing bit, always with a serious undertone, comes across more as a biographical fiction than anecdotal shorts. The novella enhances Ellen Gilchrist's wonderful collection.

I read this book so many times I lost count...Well actually I think it was 3 but I thought it was a really good book then and now that I found it again after 2 years I think it'd a good book now. I cant wait to read another one of her books!

What a wonderful scoundrel.........2001-07-11

Just finished my second book by Ms. Smith. I thought Seduced by a Scoundrel was different and again filled with suspense that kept me glued till I finished it. Unlike some I didn't think this was a typical rewind of the usual drivel of the sacrificed virgin trying to save her family. The writing was so much better. I found all the characters different from the usual and Alicia's mother is precious. Even though it didn't get the high rating of her other books I recommend giving it a try.

Not all that original.......2000-05-01

This plot started and developed too standartly to be belived. How many books have you read already where the heroine is forced into marriage/sexual relations with the hero/scoundrel because of her family's gambling debts? In addition, we find out the the revenge bent scoundrel is actually a softie, who, though trying to get into his new wife's bed, is nevertherless trying to present himself to her as an unrepentant rogue regardless.

Of course, the heroine hates him at first, but then suddenly has a change of heart and climbs all over him. Plus, she comes to terms with the fact that he had married her to enter into Society, but gets all bent out of shape when she realizes that he is using her to get revenge on his father instead.

The love/lust scenes are good enough, I suppose and the secondary romance is fascinating. (Needed more info on it, though. Would have been much better book.) The final twist at the end is a bit redemptive, but Jamie's sudden change of heart is not explained. Why?

In short: close, but no sigar!

Try Too Wicked to Love instead.......2000-04-27

Too Wicked to Love is one of my favorite books of 1999 - but this latest offering falls just short of the mark.

Lady Alicia Pemberton's brother Gerald, Earl of Brockway, loses what is left of the family fortune at Drake Wilder's gambling hall. Aside from her family's declining social and financial status, Alicia must care for her mother, who has fallen prey to dementia. It's up to Alicia to save the family once it is clear that the debt of 20,000 guineas will send them to ruin.

Drake is not prepared for the woman who offers him her virtue as payment for her brother's debt. He demands marriage, not just sex, and not because of any tender feelings, but because his bitter enemy - the father who won't acknowledge him - Lord Hailstock, wants Alicia for his own. To Alicia, who wishes to marry neither man but is instantly intrigued by Drake, the choice comes down to who will be considerate of her mother. Because Hailstock insists that Lady Brockway be kept out of their lives, Alicia chooses to marry Drake, as long as their marriage is a chaste one. Drake, who has agreed to no such nonsense, figures his bride will soon succumb to his considerable charms.

Drake's motivations (or seeming lack of common sense) were a little too convenient to the plot. Aside from forcing Hailstock to recognize him in the eyes of the society he'll be a part of, Drake would "raise his social consequence" if he marries Alicia. Oh, really? Alicia's family was nearly ruined, even before the disastrous loss of 20,000 guineas, and they've been selling off family possessions and Alicia's clothes that are not suitable for any sort of Season. Add to this the well-known dementia of the Dowager and you have, in Alicia, a girl that no one interested in social climbing would marry. Drake is kind and generous to every pregnant maid, orphan, brain-rattled former boxer, etc., that he meets - this felt a little manipulative after a while.

While Alicia manages to convince herself that she is marrying Drake to save the family, especially her mother, she soon discovers that she is attracted to her charming husband. Misplaced pride keeps her from her husband's bed, and her only recourse when she finds herself about to surrender to Drake is to hurl insults at him. She started off as a likable, capable heroine, but she is also ready to believe the worst of him, even though he has been nothing but kind to her family.

There were other problems with this book, the worst of which was Gerald's painless cure from his gambling addiction, and his new career as counselor, working in Drake's hall. Anyone, with any form of addiction, will tell you that his recovery was just a little too swift to have any degree of verisimilitude.

DON'T READ IT FOR THE MAIN CHARECTERS.......2000-03-07

THE REAL STAR OF THIS BOOK IS LADY ELENORE, ALICIA'S MOTHER. IF THERE IS ANY REASON TO READ IT AT ALL, IT WOULD BE HER. THE LAUGHS WERE GREAT.

The workbook provided opportunity for the reader to review and meditate on the material provided in it's associated book, The Peacemaker. It should be used in conjunction with the book, otherwise it will not provide the information or impact that is needed for the reader.

You'll never think the same way about the kosher kitchen after cracking open this wonderful book. Authors Katja Goldman and Arthur Boehm have focused on chicken, turkey, and duck--all products of Empire Kosher, the largest kosher poultry producer in the U.S. They have stuck to the kosher food laws, and have produced a world-tour, world-class collection of recipes to meet any and all occasions. You'll need a napkin at hand to mop your chin as you peruse this book.

The last may be best. In a final chapter, titled "The Next Day," you'll find recipes such as Mango-Dressed Chicken Salad, Turkey, White Bean and Escarole Soup, and Basil Chicken Salad on Rosemary Focaccia. Just what I was looking for........2005-10-02

This book has a fabulous variety of ways to use chicken and (just as important to me) a whole chapter of side dishes to complement them. The chapter on soups goes way beyond the standard matzah ball soup. I've definitely added a few new spices to my shelves because of this book, but a lot of the recipes work well with more standard substitutions. Every meal I've cooked using this book has received lots of ooh's and aah's.

A different kosher cookbook...........2003-03-20

This cookbook is great! The recipes in here are a nice change from same, repeated Hungarian-style recipes found in every other kosher cookbook. Although the long lists of ingredients and instructions might seem daunting to some, the recipes are not difficult, and so far, every recipe I've tried from the book has come out well.
