3 out of 5 stars Correcting a misapprehension.......2006-12-15

This is not a review of the quality of Pirate's Gold. I wish only to point out that the Aaron Elkin who wrote this book is not the mystery writer Aaron Elkins. This site seems to confuse the two (e.g., offering a twosome of Pirate's Gold and Unnatural Selection (which IS by Aaron Elkins.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Pirate's Gold.......2006-11-01

I didn't know what to expect reading a kid's book but I have to admit that 1/2 way through I couldn't put the book down. If I were blind and had someone reading this book to me I would have still been on the edge of my seat until the end. The author's descriptions were very clear and very good. I would love to see 6th, 7th and 8th graders reading this in their literature classes. Lots of learning lessons in this book too! Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars A very accessible anarchist document.......2006-03-01

_Moore has created a very accessible anarchist document here. He emphasises that anarchy refers to a system without leaders- not without order. It is just that we've been brainwashed into thinking that the world cannot run without it's immense bureaucracy of leaders, bosses, experts- and their hired muscle. We've given our power away to monsters and paracites out of nothing more than our own stupidity and complacency. Well, Moore has written a well balanced story that emphasises both the inherent evil of toltalitarian governments, as well as, the complicity of the common man in their continued existance.

_One thing did jump out at me here, the fascists take over in England (apparently the Scots are still resisting) with the SUPPORT of the major corporations- not unlike the way our corporations prefer to do business with oppressive dictatorships in the Third World (democracies are too "messy", unpredictable, and disorderly.)

_In the forward, the author expresses his disgust with Thatcher and the Conservatives and describes Britain as a "cold, mean place." I can't help but wonder how he is liking the U.S. these days under Bush and Cheney....

By the way, this entry refers to volume one of the original ten issue limited series from '88. I know; I recently got mine out again in anticipation of the new movie version.

                  2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-03-11

Since the other reviews were so positive, I thought it might be nice to have another perspective. I didn't hate this book, but frankly, I really didn't like it, either. In a word, it was boring. The couple was already together and the major conflict was that the characters had major communication problems. The reason I bought the book was because the amnesia part of the book sounded interesting (not that I haven't seen that plot device before), but it didn't actually happen until about half-way through. Honestly, the plot just wasn't that original, and the characters weren't loveable enough to save it. In fact, the female character was a bit of a door mat and that never changed.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and page-turning!.......2005-11-08

Cassie knows that Joaquin Alcolar never keeps a mistress for more than a year. Her time is running out and she decides to leave before he kicks her out. But fate has other plans for the two of them, and Cassie and Joaquin are given more time...but is it time enough to let them trust the feelings they have for one another? Time enough for love?

As always Walker writes a passionate story that will keep you turning pages.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate, Sensual and Emotional - More than 5 Stars.......2005-09-10

The Twelve Month Mistress is an incredible love story.......passionate, sensual, and emotional, one I couldn't put down. It is one of Kate's finest! Her characters come to life in a way not to be missed. It will touch the heart of every woman who reads this truly amazing story of Joaquin and Cassie. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy, Ramon's story.

Joaquin Alcolar is the oldest and only legitimate son of Juan Alcolar, a Spanish aristocrat. He has spent most of his life mistrusting relationships destroyed by his father's unfaithfulness. Joaquin is a "Lone Wolf". . Being in charge of his vineyard business has taught him how to wear a mask, not allowing him to show his true emotions Love is not in his vocabulary and he's never kept a mistress for more than a year.

Cassie is his current mistress and deeply loves Joaquin. However, she is afraid she will be sent packing and questions whether to stay or leave. She is quoted saying "is it worth staying in a situation that is just not making you happy?" She has a "hungry need for this man" and is vulnerable where he is concerned. Cassie loves and adores him and is putty in his hands. She has trouble being honest with Joaquin about her feelings and what she wants from the relationship. She's fearful of being cast out and rejected.
So when the end of the year approaches, she decides to leave, to keep hold of her pride.

Upon Cassie's leaving, Joaquin has an accident and Cassie is forced to return home to take care of him. From there, one complication after another and she is now back where she started, more confused and emotional..

Throughout the book, both characters explore their feelings concerning their relationship. Joaquin doesn't understand not always being in control, not knowing where he is headed nor why he feels so different about Cassie over his past mistresses. His emotions are out of control where she is concerned. He feels she is "his woman", what he owns he controls. He runs his life with discipline and nothing happens without his approval. This story is highly "charged" and one you won't be able to put down!

                    4 out of 5 stars quite good.......2005-08-24

this book is the first that I've read in this series. I've played all the mechwarrior games and this book really did not disappoint. It had some real shockers concerning the plot ( that I could've done without). Over all, the action is good, the intrigue is good, and it always leaves you wanting more.(I finished reading it after a 5 hour binge at 3:30 in the morning.)

5 out of 5 stars Coleman delivers with good, old-fashioned Battletech action.......2005-05-03

I think many Battletech fans, even those less than enamored with the Mechwarrior: Dark Age series as a whole, will agree that Loren L. Coleman is probably the preeminent writer in the Battletech universe. Not only does he give fans what they want - plenty of rip-roaring BattleMech action out on the killing fields - he also ties the story he is telling into the big picture. The Republic is falling apart following the loss of interstellar communications, giving rise to increasingly deadly factional wars all across its ten Prefectures. Blood of the Isle takes us to Skye, an Inner Sphere world trying to withstand the merciless onslaught of the mighty Clan Jade Falcon. As this book opens, Skye has already withstood one attack and now lies vulnerable to the inevitable return of Jade Falcon's superior forces. The Highlanders, led by Tara Campbell, are greatly weakened, the Steel Wolves of the singular Anastasia Kerensky have disappeared, the Republic has sent along little more than one elderly paladin for support, and Duke Gregory Kelswa-Steiner's conflicts with his wayward son Jasek stand in the way of possible salvation. The aid of Jasek's Stormhammers comes at a political price the Duke will not pay, for his son does not share his loyalty to the Republic but instead advocates a return to House Steiner.

The Jade Falcons are a deadly threat, as Chinggis Khan Malvina Hazen foregoes honor and clan tradition for total war and outright conquest. The previous invasion of Skye cost her an arm, a leg, and an eye - as well as her brother; the planet's conquest is something she now takes very personally, and her return is marked by unpredictable and very deadly vengeance on the people of Skye. Before the attack comes, however, Jasek Kelswa-Steiner makes his ignominious yet necessary return to the planet, bringing not only his Stormhammers but the Steel Wolves with him, along with plans for recruiting forces from the Lyran Commonwealth, a move that offers the enemies of his disapproving father a foothold in the Old Isle of Skye worlds. As you might expect, there is plenty of political intrigue buried at the core of this story, as the defense of Skye is a show marriage of convenience likely to enjoy a short and tumultuous honeymoon at best - but the questionable future will have to wait as the battle for Skye quickly heats up in a very big way.

Battletech fans should be thrilled by all of the Mechwarrior action in these pages; the second half of the book features one fight after another, with BattleMechs going toe to toe as military tacticians try to outmaneuver each other's forces. Blood of the Isle goes a long way toward making up for a lack of battle action in some earlier Mechwarrior: Dark Age novels. At the same time, the political and military dealings going on among suspicious allies are brilliantly plotted, leaving room for questions that seemingly must be answered at some point down the line. It is hard to completely trust anyone in these trying times, as each faction inevitably has secret designs of its own vis-à-vis the Republic and its own local interests. It all makes for a wonderfully juicy tale of politics told against a backdrop of good, old-fashioned Mechwarrior action.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mechwarrior DarkAges book by FAR!!!!.......2004-09-01

I have now read all the Darkages books and most have been snooze fests. Being someone that love the Battletech universe I could not resist to give it one more try and WOW what a difference, this is also most the old books, good action never to dull, does not get bogged down to much on the unnecessary stuff. I just hope this continues the trend and the next book in Oct don't go back to the garbage that they called books for the first 10 tries.

                    4 out of 5 stars A very good book........2004-08-30

After 11 books, I'm starting to enjoy this series more. I really enjoyed this book in particular because Mr. Coleman gave us some glimpses of the broader situation in the Inner Sphere AND the return of REAL battlemechs into the story. Want specifics? Buy and read the book so they'll publish more!! This was a good read, and I look forward to more books from Mr. Coleman.

                    Book Description

Many of the great mystics and sages in history have told us that their spiritual realizations began in childhood. Gandhi, Albert Einstein, and Abraham Lincoln are just a few famous figures who have reported these events. Based on more than five years of interviews, this book combines startling firsthand accounts of secret spiritual lives, including recollections from adults who have forgotten or repressed such experiences in childhood. The author explains how parents, educators, and therapists can recognize, identify, and nurture children's deep spiritual connections. The book is divided into ten chapters treating the phenomena of wisdom, wonder, and visions, including guiding parents along the spiritual path, building a curriculum, and learning from children.

I read this book a few of years ago, before my son was even walking. Looking back on it, I realize that I've incorporated many if the author's suggestions in working with my son, and I think that has helped him feel comfortable in talking to me about his experiences. He told me I was going to have a baby before I even knew I was pregnant; this prompted me to take a pregnancy test. He told me the baby was a girl when I was about two months pregnant. And, later, when I was very pregnant (about 8 mos or so), he told me that he was playing with his sister in his bedroom at night. He also tried to get me to 'see' her, by pointing out what he called 'balloons with light in them' that would appear in the bedroom. He said this light was Sofia and her friends. Later, a nurse at the Dr's office told me that she often hears about children his age (3 at the time) predicting pregnancies, etc.

It's just amazing that when you're aware, you can see children's spirituality unfolding naturally before your eyes. This awareness helps parents to nurture and acknowledge this spirituality, which in turn, I believe creates a well-balanced child.

                    5 out of 5 stars Secrets of Children's Spirituality.......2005-05-31

One of my favorite childhood dreams, a recurrent one that I had when I was around seven or eight, is that I am conducting a symphony orchestra. That would be a special experience in itself. What makes this dream more interesting is that I am making up the music, note by note, as we go. Almost like the wand that Mickey Mouse borrows from the Sorcerer, as I wave my baton, the music comes into being. In the dream, that is a thrilling experience. What is even more interesting is that in the dream I am noticing that the orchestra seems to know what notes to play even though there are no notes until I wave them into being at that very moment. In the dream I am puzzling over how the orchestra can play the notes at the very instant that I create them.
Years later I can see in this dream many of the themes I've meditated upon in trying to come to a better understanding of a spiritual path that is natural to me, one that involves allowing improvisation to connect with a transpersonal source of creativity. While my adult self can both appreciate and understand the dream, my childhood self experienced the wonder and awe of the dream, but did not have any understanding of its meaning or source. Not all children, however, display the same lack the understanding of such experiences, according to Tobin Hart in his book The secret spiritual world of children (Inner Ocean Publishing). He shares many stories of children seeming wise beyond their years, children who experience cosmic consciousness and understand its significance and use the experience to guide them throughout their lives.
The idea that children are close to God certainly comes through loud and clear in Hart's stories. The children in his book have mystical experiences, visits by angels and other beings, they spontaneously offer healing words or touch to other children and adults, and they have psychic experiences of many varieties. An account of these experiences comprises only the first half of the book. He devotes the second half of his book to providing guidance to parents. There he skillfully weaves together insights for both parent and child as they attempt to respond to such experiences.
Spirituality is a mixed blessing, for while it may open the child to the secrets of the universe, such knowledge can also be a burden on the child. Adults face similar challenges and the parents may find their own spiritual issues mirrored in the struggles of the child. A vision of one's mission in life may also create pressure to succeed. Being given extraordinary insights, visits from angels, and other non-ordinary encounters may make the child feel "special" and disinclined to make the mortal efforts in life required of the rest of us. Awareness of invisible worlds that no one else can see can make a person, child or adult, feel alienated from others. Balancing heaven and earth is difficult, regardless of a person's age.
Psychic experiences offer their own special challenges and they are quite similar for both children and adults. Precognitive experiences, for example, especially about unfortunate events, can make the experiencer feel somehow guilty, as if knowledge of an event creates responsibility for it. Telepathic sensitivity can confuse a person's sense of self, requiring effort to discern one's own feelings from those of others. Balancing individuality with inter-connectedness is a lifelong riddle that requires the development of a stable ego, content enough to remain calmly in the background. The child's experience becomes a teacher for the parents as they endeavor to respond appropriately to the child.
Tobin's advice to parents seems to revolve around two key principles. The first is that the parent should endeavor to respond matter of factly to the child's reports. While it might seem inconceivable to us that we might deny the child's reality, making too big a deal of it can be equally harmful. The second, and more challenging, principle is for parents to cultivate a good relationship with their own spirituality and not vicariously live through their children. Although he allows for the probability that our species is evolving, he expresses some reserve about such concepts as "Indigo children." He argues, alternatively, that children have always had a secret spiritual life. It is the parents, he suggests, that are now highly interested in spirituality and have become aware of its existence in their children. The children may seem "special" in the parents' eyes, but this perception may be a compensating projection of the parents' own sad alienation from their own spiritual inner child. The child's spirituality often needs some help with incarnating into the workaday world. Parents who can embrace this need and provide a family atmosphere in which all parties are collaborating to bring heaven into earth seems to create the best classroom for the lessons spiritual experiences bring to the home. www.henryreed.com/publications/bookreviews

This book has inspired me to listen more closely to the children in my life as well to my own inner knowing. As adults we can forget this source within us with all the external distractions in our lives. The stories Tobin Hart shares reminds us we all have the ability to listen from within.
There is so much wisdom in this book, from children and sages from the past, I cannot wait to re-read it to glean more. This work is not something to be measured or quantified from a cognitive perspective, but to be experienced, felt, and lived.

                    Book Description

A compendium of design, from the best-known practitioners in modern jewelry, and an invaluable sourcebook for designers, collectors, and dealers in fine jewelry. The desire to depict animals in art has always been strong, and the early history of jewelry, from Celtic brooches to Renaissance pendants, shows abundant examples of its appeal. The Jeweled Menagerie begins by painting a picture of this historical context, but its unifying focus is the great efflorescence of jewelry design in the modern period. It was not until the nineteenth century, with the growth of a middle class eager to show off their recently acquired wealth, that a whole new group of designers and manufacturers, mainly in France, sought to satisfy the appetite for jewels of all types made of precious metals, precious or semiprecious gems, and enamel. There was a revival of Egyptian and Etruscan styles in which animals of all sorts were incorporated: birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and fish. The discovery of Japanese crafts also had an influence on the jewels that were created during the century. Prominent jewelry houses, such as Fontenay, Falize, Fabergé, and Tiffany & Co., all created a spectacular array of animal jewels that are much prized today. The new design developments from the turn of the century and through the whole of the twentieth—Art Nouveau and Art Deco before the Second World War, but also a plethora of forms in the decades since—contributed impressive animal jewelry, from Lalique's intricate insects to Cartier's panthers to the sophisticated imagery of Verdura. Here for the first time the contents of this "jeweled menagerie" are examined in detail, showing the great imagination and skill that have gone into the fashioning of these precious objects. They exhibit not only meticulous craftsmanship, but grace, humor, and refinement. All lovers of fine jewelry will be intrigued by the many examples of a demanding art, displayed lavishly here in color. 250 color illustrations.

This is a wonderful resource for high end, modern animal jewelry pieces. These are not designs you will find at your local jewelers, and it is probably of limited use to crafts people, but as eye candy it can't be beat.

While brief mention is made of historical pieces, this is really a book about Victorian jewelry to the present. It is a shame that there is not more information about the wonderful animal jewelry of antiquity, but perhaps that will come in another volume.

If you are interested in contemporary and 19th-20th century jewelry design, this book is a steal at the Amazon price.

Unfortunately, they are WAY too hard for children to cut out and assemble. Frankly, they are almost too hard for me to put together. I wouldn't recommend this as a craft for homeschoolers. It's more like a classroom decoration.

4 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool!.......2000-09-29

I am a teacher and when I do my ancient Egypt lesson I use these masks to spark student interest and to decorate the room. The masks are easier to make than the villages or castles in this same series. The pieces are bigger. I found an xacto knife and tacky glue work the best!

Editorial design is one of the most exciting and innovative areas of design at the moment, and is the area of design that has most benefited from the advances in digital technology. Production of catalogs, newspaper supplements, books, and the thousands of independent magazines whether on- or off-line is changing due to advances in digital technology. This book examines editorial projects and provides an overview of the entire working process from juggling creative elements such as photography, typography, text and illustration to dealing with the constraints and demands from editors, publishers, advertisers, repro houses, printers, and paper mills.

                          Book Description

1871. Other volumes in this set include ISBN number(s): 0766155560. Volume 2 of 2. This work is Barnum's recollections of forty busy years. There is an almost universal, and not unworthy curiosity to learn the methods and measures, the ups and downs, the strifes and victories, the mental and moral personnel of those who have taken an active and prominent part in human affairs. But an autobiography has attractions and merits superior to those of a "life" written by another who cannot know all that helps to give interest and accuracy to the narrative. Barnum's narrative is interspersed with amusing incidents and even the recital of some very practical jokes. Such is simply because his natural disposition impels him to look upon the brighter side of life and he hopes that his humorous experiences will entertain the reader as much as they were enjoyed by himself.

Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily

Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).

Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.
