Book Description

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but uninteresting.......2007-09-18

When I read the description of this book I was excited, because I enjoy reading about interracial couples (BWWM) and the twist that she had his child but he never knew drew me in. However, reading this book became tedious and quite frankly boring. The male character seemed to love the lead character, Lee, more than she did. I can't even recall her telling him if she loved him. Yes, she said it to herself and to her friend, but I can't remember if she said it to Jack. The author also did not seem to resolve Lee's issues with the loss of her parents and how it related to her relationship with Jack. I enjoyed the character of Jan and Alex more than I liked the main characters. There was only one love scene, so if you looking for passionate sex scenes this is not the book.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite Right .......2006-06-06

One of the joys of reading is to escape through the main character. Rendezvous cheats the reader in this way unless you are somewhat dingy to say the least. Naomi in An Infrequent Pairing by SaFiya Dalilah is much more assertive and realistic.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-05-17

Well, what can I say, I have never read a book where I wanted to slap the heroine silly and I do not believe in hitting women being one myself. I tried real hard to be sympathetic to her, she was young, got a proposal from a man and she did not even know his last name - pleese how real is that? (maybe in the 70's love was that free?). Got pregnant at 18, death of parents, being single mum. But when the love of her life is back in her life rather than deal with problems that come up all she does is run away.
1. She sees her lover with another woman and assumes its his new girl - she runs
2. She jumps to conclusions about lover's intentions - she runs
3. Former girlfriend of lover with malicious intent tries to break them up with bad news - she runs
this lady needed therapy badly
I had more interest in her best friend's love affair then in hers. I would love to read a book about that.

1 out of 5 stars Whatever.......2005-07-18

happened to a good book that you could snuggle down with at the end of a hard day because you just want to unwind I have to pose this question because this isn't that book.

I love a good romance book just like everyone else but I hate books where the heroine is just sooooo annoying that you want to slap some sense into her.

I agree with the other comment about preferring to read a story about the best friend because this book made me want to scream which I did just to feel better.

There are just some authors that have a better grasp of what I like to see in my heroines~~unfortunately this author isn't one of them.

BTW I purchased the book based on the cover. The cover gives me the impression that the heroine is anything but a scared little thirty-something year old acting 'virgin' with an eighteen year old kid.

4 out of 5 stars Hated the cover.......2003-06-12

I was interested by the story line, that of the characters having a child (unknown to the father) together... how would he find out, how would the son take the news, etc. I hesitated to buy the book because the cover is too racy (the story isn't). I like romance but not 'explicit sex'. Couldn't read the book at work, couldn't read in front of my husband or children because of the sleazy cover. I really enjoyed the story, though, the only weak spot was the son's reaction; too non chalant for my tastes.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for all AVG Fans!.......2003-01-01

A few years ago (around 96'), I had the luxury and luck to find myself, at the age of 12 to be in contact with Erik Shilling. During that contact, which lasted for several months, he went to the extraordinary lenghth of sending me his book -for free!! Autographed, it is one of my most treasured possessions.

I have read it and re-read it dozens of times since then. It sits on my bookshelf in the good company of General Robert L. Scott's books (The Day I Owned the Sky, God is My Co-Pilot, Runway to the Sun, Flying Tiger: Chennault of China), Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's Baa Baa Black Sheep, and Frank S. Losonsky's Flying Tiger: A Crew Chief's Story, among others.

If you ever have the great oppertunity and luxery of speaking to Erik Shilling, do so. And if you ever come upon his book, do not hesitate in buying it. I promise that you will not regret doing so.

5 out of 5 stars A must for serious fans of the Flying Tigers.......2002-01-15

Mr. Shilling's autobiographical work is a fine insight into the minds of the pilots that made up the Flying Tigers, CAT, Air America, Bird Air and others; men who lived for their profession and loved the experience of the Far East.

The text is written as one who is a true test pilot. The details of each aircraft flown and the events described are especially vivid. The story of the sonic boom is prophetic. Mr. Shilling's style is very believable.

Of the aircraft the Demon is the most intriguing. Very few aircraft historians are familiar with this unusual beast. "Destiny" brings it to life. The reviews of the true capabilities in the P-40 are enlightening to the detractors of this important fighting machine.

Do not miss an opportunity to get this gem!

5 out of 5 stars A must for serious fans of the Flying Tigers.......2002-01-14

Mr. Shilling's autobiographical book is truly a great insight into what made the legendary men of the AVG, CAT, Bird Air and Air America tick. His stories of close calls and unusual people and places are truly worth the search to find this rare gem. He is one of the last unsung heroes from the dark early days of World War II for America left.

The reader will find themselves looking for more books of this genre after it is done. This is also the only place known where a man who knew the ins and outs of possibly the greatest US fighter that is not known to the common aircraft historian, the Curtis-Wright Demon (CW-21), details his "affection" for this strange and wonderful bird (and his time on a cold mountain with one). Mr Shilling also debunks many of the common myths about the P-40 in the early part of the war and reveals it as possibly the best fighting weapon available to either side in the air in the hands of individual pilots with the nerve needed to fly it right. He writes like the test pilot he was.

Pick this one up for a wonderful journey in a strange time.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How many ways can you say BRILLIANT!!!!!.......2006-07-27

With each Mary Jo Putney book I read, I see why I admire her skills so much, and why she is an inspiration to one of my other favorite authors (Gaelen Foley)
Normally I don't read other people's reviews before I purchase a book, because first I read the synopsis of the book and then decide if it is a story I'd be interested in. I'm glad that I did not ere in my routine for this book, because if I had know about the extensive political aspect of the book, I'm sure I wouldn't have wanted to read it.
It would have been my loss, because the political aspect of it was exactly why I loved this book. For one, since I'm so intrigued with the Napoleonic Era, I was rewarded with so many minor details of that genre I did not know before hand. From page to page you appreciate what extensive research Ms Putney had to do to make this book awesome.
Ms Putney's skill in using real life facts to entwine her fiction is brilliant.
If you are one of the people who read the reviews before the actual book, please do not be put off by the political aspect the other reviews mentioned, I can assure you it was necessary to bring out the personalities of each of her characters.
Every emotion possible of the human spirit will be expressed as you read the book.
        Two thumbs way up!

2 out of 5 stars Even the best authors can write bad books occasionally.......2006-06-02

I bought this book because it was part of the Fallen Angels series (book two after THUNDER AND ROSES) and wanted to have the complete collection before I started reading it. Now I wish I'd saved my money. I never got past page 100 of PETALS IN THE STORM.

One of the big problems was with the characters. For the most part, they were nothing more than cardboard cutouts. I had no sense of what made them tick, no idea of why Maggie had become a spy, and absolutely no idea why the "hero" (and I use the term under duress) was such a jerk. The author's explanation of having his heart broken just didn't really ring true with me. His broken heart was really the result of nothing more than the romance staple of the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING. If he'd given Maggie a real chance to explain herself, they would never have lost each other for so many years. But I digress...

One of the things I really hated about the hero was his enjoyment of sleeping with other men's wives. Yes, I know this sort of thing happened all the time during the Regency period, but that doesn't mean I have to like it! And you can't tell me that there were no men with morals in those days, because I won't believe you. Taking another man's wife as your mistress is disgusting and reprehensible. How would Rafe like it if he were the cuckolded husband?

Also, the political / intrigue part of the story was the main story, not the romance. The love story (such as it was) was completely overpowered by the mystery. I found myself skipping pages. I then found myself wondering when Putney would get back to the romance. I was then shocked to suddenly find that I NO LONGER CARED! It was no longer worth my time to finish the book. I didn't want Maggie to get with Rafe. Frankly, I thought she was much too good for him. As other reviewers have said, she chose the wrong man.

Putney is one of my "top shelf", auto-buy authors. Maybe I would have been more forgiving of PETALS IN THE STORM if it hadn't been written by her. Maybe I expected too much. But then again, maybe not.

Don't buy this book. If you're really determined to finish the Fallen Angels series, I recommend you borrow this one first, even if you think a superior writer like Putney could not possibly misstep. For something truly excellent by Putney, read SILK AND SHADOWS or THE WILD CHILD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mystery... Not as Romantic as Others.......2002-08-06

Petals in the Storm comes as the second in the Fallen Angel Series. If you pay attention to the time line though, these books are not really in chronological order. Rafe, the Duke of Candover and the oldest of the Fallen Angels, fell in love right out of school. However, this young man that always was an aristocrat and rarely showed weakness let his pride and anger ruin his chances with the girl. When a mission takes him to Paris, much to his surprise his contact turns out to be the girl only she's now in disguise and one of the best spies for England. Margot Ashton is not the same girl that Rafe fell in love with. She has known excrutiating pain at the hands of men and only trusts one man explicitly... Robin, her protector of many years. As Rafe works through his feelings, his jealousy grows towards Robin and his fear for Margot in this dangerous masquerade begins to consume him. In the end, Rafe, Margot and Robin face their greatest enemy together and find an unlikely alliance that leads Margot and Rafe to the love they denied so many years ago. It's worth having for the bookshelf. It's more whodunit than romance. The sensuality is not really there like in Thunder and Roses. But it's still a good read and I really liked Rafe from his other roles in the Bargain and Thunder and Roses.

        5 out of 5 stars A different spies story.......2002-07-15

This book is a book of english spies in the early 1800 in France, but is different because the book tells us the personal problems of the spies (of course including a love story) instead of how they do their work or who they are spying, as a matter of fact their work is taken as a second story of the book, it is interesting knowing how a spy do one thing for his country when he really wants to do another thing.
Is a nice and easy story that will relax you while you read.

4 out of 5 stars An intelligent heroine chooses a jerk? Who would think?.......2002-03-24

Alright, I confess I had a great time with this book. It's extraordinary to read a romance with plot beyond the love story. Our lady hero, the spy, manages to save the world. Our author also manages to sneak in several warm messages of a woman's resilience and ingenuity.

Unfortunately, I could never quite come around to the hero after seeing him in all his wondrous arrogance and self-centeredness. It was a little like watching a romantic movie when there's no chemistry between the two lead actors.

This book has an amazing feature, which is that it conveys the spirit and presence of Nisargadatta in such a powerful way not even I AM THAT does. The pointers are absolutely clear and straighforward, and they deal with a wide range of cases. No doubt can remain as to the nature of our true self after the reading of this teaching. In a misterious way, Ramesh was able to be the interpreter of the teaching without interfeering with it in this occasion. This teaching (and the way it is presented in this book) is certainly far superior to anything the same Ramesh could have written of its own.

5 out of 5 stars If Your Spirit has been Ripened.......2007-05-12

This extraordinary book written by Ramesh S. Balsekar focuses the seekers mind even more pointendly, no pun is intended, than the spiritual classic, I Am That. Aptly titled, Pointers reduces the whole of the seekers spiritual quest into a finite, simple and yet expansive conclusion of unification. If the reader is ready and intuitive, by this I mean to imply his/her spirit is ripened to be plucked from its vine, then no other words beyond Ramesh's Pointers will ever be needed. I highly recommend that all seekers read I Am That as a prelude to Pointers if they wish for the fullest experience possible, they will be rewarded for their patience.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU WERE BEFORE YOU WERE BORN........2007-01-31

After reading POINTERS From NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ and JEAN DUNN three books on NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ Talks ( PRIOR TO CONSCIOUSNESS , SEEDS OF CONSCIOUSNESS , CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE ABSOLUTE ) It answered why the body was born or should it be said " What were you before you were born " .

Three good POINTS in the book - Consciousness is the illusion . Second - You were before Consciousness and third- the problem with concepts. Understanding these three POINTS made Knowledge and Ignorance seem the same. Perhaps the pupose of life is to understand that what is creating the illusion is consciousness itself.

In one of the NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ books there was a simple sentence that was so powerful and went something like this " THE SEARCH FOR REALITY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS OF ALL UNDERTAKINGS FOR IT DESTROYS THE WORLD IN WHICH YOU LIVE"

If you are ready this book is all you'll ever need, if not it will certainly plant the seeds of awakening. Not only does Ramesh Balsekar translate the words of Maharaj, but goes on to expand and clarify the wisdom of his Guru as only an enlightened disciple can. This is the perfect follow up for Maharaj's classic, I Am That. But Please don't let your mind be put off by Nisargadatta's gritty approach. Because of the Guru's declining health, this book's tone does sound a bit harsh by ignoring common civilities and going straight to the core of truth. Yet that is exactly what we need to realize.

5 out of 5 stars Shedding the Illusion of the "self".......2006-02-02

In Pointers From Nisargadatta Maharaj, devotee Ramesh Balsekar provides further insight into the teachings of what many consider a master of Advaita Vedanta. The teachings are both simple and profound -- and often full of paradox. To "understand" them requires the relinquishment of thought. To "explain" the teachings reduces them to concepts which are inherently false. That is probably why the book it aptly titled "Pointers..." The real truth, according to what Balsekar shares of Nisargadatta's teachings, is "apperceived" directly. And it's based on the deep understanding that there is no individual entity at work...

"The main point in Maharaj's teaching is that in this living-dream of life we are not the dreamed characters, which we think we are, but that we are the dreamer, and it is our mistaken identification with the dreamed character, as a separate independent entity as the 'doer', that causes the illusion of 'bondage'". Pages 202-203

If you have read the classic "I Am That", this is an excellent aid in providing further clarification into our true nature. Enjoy it for all the gifts it brings you.

This book is fantastic! Both my husband and I enjoy cooking and loved spending an evening thumbing through this book over a glass of wine looking up every term we could think of...all were in the book! The book has also added greatly to our dinner party conversations as it offers a bit of historical context for food terms. Quite interesting. I think this book would make a fabulous gift for anyone you know who likes to cook.

Love this book. This book has words I never even heard before. It is the type of book that every culinary student and professional should have with them at all times. Another book I found very helpful were the Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam and the Study Guide for Baking and Advanced Baking. These books have very good questions with answers and even explanations. All these books can be found under Patrick Leonardi. A very smart and talented author.

Or what about how to pronounce the wine "Gewürztraminer"? Or my personal favorite "Crème Fraiche" pronounced (krem fresh)

What is the definition for Jicama or Wasabi? and where did they come from?

What is the difference between "Crayfish" and a "Langoustine" and are they indigenous to Louisiana...

WELL WONDER NO MORE!!... this book is the secret behind all of those fancy menus you read in Restaurants and Banquet menus (I should know I have had to create new Catering Menus every year since 1993)LOL

I have been in the Hospitality Industry for over 17 years this book has been in my collection since I started. If you can purchase it get it!! Definitely a must for any Caterers or students of the Culinary Art.

This book contains definitions of almost EVERYTHING Food (and some wines), the correct pronunciation, spelling and it's original origin. I can't recommend this book enough!! It is quite pricey but I have bought it at least 5 times in my career as gifts for my assistants moving on to greater positions in this Industry. They have terms (and again pronunciations) for all Culture cuisines ie; German, Cambodian, Japanese, French, Italian, Middle Eastern and Spanish just to name a few.

I also recommend the Oxford Companion for Food and Wine as well as any "Professional Chef" book from Culinary Institute of America

Elizabeth Riely has amassed a library of resources (see the enviable bibliography) and has carefully chosen a comprehensive collection of culinary terms for this book. The cross-pollination of categories is rich, from the scientific to the ethnic, from the technical to the colloquial. Of her knowledge and research capabilities, I'd say she's a force to be reckoned with. With people like Elizabeth Riely and Sharon Tyler Herbst in this world, rest assured that when a culinary term is needed just fingertips away, we can depend on their talents to give us responsible information. I also like the pronunciation guides, as I am prone to guessing incorrectly more often or not. For anybody who's into food as more than a hobby, The Chef's Companion (published by the textbook makers VNR, and I hope, available to more than culinary school students) reads like a satisfying novel. Lick a bookplate and stick it in the front cover of this book; you'll keep it forever.

                    Book Description

The "house" is one of American folk art's most popular and prominent motifs, and this beautiful, authoritative volume is the first of its kind to explore this symbol in all major folk art media. The book is also a record of America's lost architectural heritage-- many of the buildings featured are no longer standing.

Each chapter focuses on a specific folk art category and includes an in-depth, detailed introduction to the subject followed by a comprehensive gallery of images accompanied by extended captions that provide a symbolic, social, and economic context for each piece. Every folk art format is featured: quilts, rugs, needlework, furnishings, paintings, and drawings, among others. The unique folk art objects presented are culled from dealers' wares, unpublished private and corporate collections, auction houses, and major folk art museums in the country.

With its wealth of photography and insightful text, and introduction by Gerard C. Wertkin, Director of the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, Home Sweet Home is an excellent resource for collectors, history and nostalgia buffs, and those interested in Americana.

I recently bought Home Sweet Home because I am interested in American art and crafts, and it is full of beautiful pieces of art. More importantly, though, I really felt like I was learning about the lives and history of early Americans, through their artwork. Especially in an uncertain time like this, it was somehow touching to get such an intimate view into how early Americans depicted their homes and communities. I'm planning to buy several copies for Christmas presents!

                        Book Description

The first decades of the twentieth century brought enormous change in Britain. Men's and women's roles came under scrutiny, class and social structures were transformed. This book casts new light on the notorious Bloomsbury Group and how the issues of their day influenced their interpretation and decoration of the home. Christopher Reed analyzes the rooms designed by Bloomsbury artists as spaces in which to be modern. The book traces the development of Bloomsbury's domestic aesthetic from the group's influential promulgation of Post-Impressionism in Britain around 1910 through the 1930s. In detailed studies of rooms and environments created by Virginia Woolf's sister Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, and Roger Fry, Reed challenges the accepted notion that these artists drifted away from modernism. He presents their work as an alternative form of modernism, later suppressed by sexist and homophobic attitudes that disparaged the decorative arts and domesticity in general, as well as Bloomsbury in particular. The aesthetic and ideological implications of the Bloomsbury interiors were international in scope, Reed argues, and these domestic designs served as an important marker along the route to modernity.
