Book Description
In one of her most deeply felt works of fiction, Le Guin explores the dreams and sorrows of the inhabitants of Klatsand, Oregon, a beach town where ordinary people bring their dreams and sorrows for a weekend or the rest of their lives, and sometimes learn to read what the sea writes on the sand. Searoad is the story of a particular place that could be any place, and of a people so distinctly drawn they could be any of us.

Outstanding.......2002-09-07
Searoad: The Chronicles of Klatsand is a collection of short stories set in Oregon. For those who resist even the cream of the Science Fiction genre, these are pure fiction, and serve as a wonderful introduction to Le Guin's work. For previous fans, these are a must-read. The only draw back to the collection is that it has gone out of print- a tragedy for readers.
Unbelievable.......2001-03-02
This is less of a review than a complaint and expression of disbelief that this book is no longer in print - meaning you have to hunt for it at used bookstores. "Searoad," a collection of short stories set in a small town on the Oregon coast, is a step away from the wonderful SF/fantasy stories that Le Guin normally writes. It is also, in my opinion, Le Guin's absolutely best work, and that's saying quite a bit. With "Searoad" Le Guin proved that she is a master fiction writer in any genre. I can't recommend this book enough - if you can find it.

Book Description
By rights, Merrick of Normandy should
shun the serpent-tongued beauty who wishes
him dead. But Alana's sensuous fire
draws him to her -- and burns him to his warrior
soul. It is he who is lord and she the captive.
Yet Merrick can never claim true victory until
the proud Saxon maid shares his passion --
and embraces him as master of her heart.
Customer Reviews:
What kind of conqueror was that??!.......2007-03-16
After reading all of the reviews, I was under impression that the book would be something like Brenda Joyce "Conqueror", it was not even close to that! Merrick came out looking completely weak and powerless. He couldn't control the villagers or anyone else for that matter, allowing his own people to plot against him. Most of his dialogue was " I am your lord and conqueror. You will be mine." But all he did is whine this entire book. The author spend so much time leading to the inevitable sex scene, it was absurd- with all this bathing and sleeping in the nude,by the time they actually did it no one cared! Alana's strange devotion to the same people that hated and abused her all of her life, not to mention her sister that clearly despises her, makes her look incredibly stupid. And why bother giving characters names, if all they called themselves is " Saxon" and "Norman"? If you want a strong hero who is in control, read the "Conqueror" by Joyce!
My Lord Conqueror.......2005-08-15
Samantha James is my new best friend, well, in reading anyway. Her books are incredible. I can't get enough of them. In My Lord Conqueror her hero, Merrick of Normandy is delicious in every way! Her heroine, Alana is fearless and lovely and fun. The ending was chilling and had me enthralled. Her words fairly leaped off the pages. I have read, no devoured, several of Samantha James books: His Wicked Ways, His Wicked Promise, A Perfect Bride, A Perfect Groom, and my personal favorite of the trio, A Perfect Bride. The only way a reader could be disappointed in reading Samantha James's books is if there wasn't any more of her books to read, so keep writing Ms. James and I'll keep reading, BRAVO!!
A Great Romance.......2002-12-02
I read this story a long time ago. I will probably need to purchase a new book sometime soon because the one that I have is almost falling apart. This is a pretty old book. I think it was written in the early nineties. The formula for the story (Norman Knight and Saxon peasant) has been used before, but the author works their magic in a special way. With most historical romances of this period. You begin to feel ambivalent toward the hero or heroine. Not with in this book!! You understand the reasons for the heroine's anxiety, and you also understand the pov of the hero. I highly recommend this book.
A milder and much sweeter Norman conqueror story........2002-05-09
What is there not to like about Alana and Merrick? They were wonderful. I loved reading their story. Merrick never treated Alana as Rolfe treated Ceidre in The Conqueror going so far as to marry her off to his best friend and taking her on their wedding night. Alana and Merrick's story was filled with love, not like Rolfe and Ceidre, which was filled with brutality and betrayal. I much preferred Merrick and Alana's story of love to the brutal cruelty of The Conqueror. Alana and Merrick were well matched and their love came out strongly and nicely where you could relax and enjoy the storyline. There was warmth in their story and her gift was an extra touch. Merrick never treated her with indifference. Their feelings for one another and reactions to the other gave the reader a warm, fuzzy feeling. I felt they were strong, flushed out characters that made their story a very enjoyable read. Samantha James is an excellent writer that has her own style and stands with the best. Us squeamish readers need our writers too.
a nice read.......2002-01-29
I liked this book. It did remind me of Kathleen E. Woodiwiss's The Wolf and the Dove but it didn't have the strong character developement that that book had. The hero, Merrick is a Norman Lord who has taken be force the Heroine's home. Alana, is a Saxon who was the former lord's bastard child. She is feared by the villagers because of her dreams that tend to come true. He makes her his mistress despite the fact that she fights him at every turn. She must over come her own feelings of hate to love this conqueror and he must overcome his distrust of her. The story is a good one but I wished the characters had a bit more substance.

Nicely written.......2000-11-25
This is(overall)a nice book, considering I bought it used to learn the basics of the game before I'll have to spend more money on the real thing. I think it's a great game, mostly 'cause I believe in more realism in games(shadowrun opposed to Dungeons and Dragons).
Book Description
This book offers a radical new survey of more than a thousand years of religious life in Rome, from the foundation of the city to its rise to world empire and its conversion to Christianity. It sets religion in its full cultural context, between the primitive hamlet of the eighth century BC and the cosmopolitan, multicultural society of the first centuries of the Christian era.

Book Description
This volume analyzes the priesthood of the provincial cult in every province of the Latin west where evidence has survived in the period from Augustus down to the mid third century.
Particular attention is paid to the epigraphic record, notably the Testimony of honorific statues especially at provincial centres, but discussion also focusses on the origin and background of provincial priests, their office and duties, and their careers both before and after holding provincial office.
Of special interest are the sixteen tables that list the main facts preserved by the epigraphic record, also a concluding overview that summarizes the principal features of the institution including the office of priestess and the role of administrative officials. Some fifty plates illustrate the text.

A complete revision of a work that has been called “the greatest architectural guidebook ever written.”
Book Description
In this companion book to Amazing Grains, Joanne Saltzman applies her unique approach to a wide variety of dried beans. Saltzman explores the fundamentals of dried-bean cooking, explains seasonings, soaking, different types of preparation, each bean's unique attributes and taste, and provides more than sixty kitchen-tested recipes that showcase them in a variety of dishes. Also included are recipes for tofu and tempeh, two processed forms of soybeans.
Customer Reviews:
vegetarian must have.......2002-11-19
I bought this book several years ago and didn't like it, put it on the shelf and didn't look at it again until last month. I must have changed as a cook because what I thought was too complicated and bizarre before was now helpful and interesting. This book has changed the way I think about beans and my approach to creating new dishes. Anyone interested in improving their creative skills in the kitchen, understanding a cook's thought behind a recipe, as well as learning tasty ways to include healthy vegetarian bean dishes in the daily diet should treasure this book. It is really one of a kind.
The soul of a bean..........2000-05-13
I love the author's approach to bean cookery...the elemental "feeling" that the attributes to various types of beans...the taste, textures and energetics both in the bean itself as well as the various cooking methods. She really takes beans to a (deserved) higher level! My only reason for four stars is that frequently the recipes call for slightly odd ingredients which one might not normally have on hand; sometimes I was ready to prepare a recipe only to find I had no garam marsala, (or plantain, white miso, etc.)on hand and that this item was supposedly critical to the final taste. Personally I find it better to experiment anyway, and this gives you the springboard to becoming more adventurous.

Customer Reviews:
Nice reference book.......2000-10-26
Although the text can be a bit tedius at times, this is a good reference book for building a home. I have been searching for a book like this for sometime. While I expected this to be directed a bit more towards the decorating aspect of the home, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it answered many of my questions concering home building. Not a complete reference, but a great start nonetheless.
20,000 ft. view.......2000-08-29
I was hoping to get insights from the mind of an interior design artist. My disappointment grew as I made my way through the book. I did not once stop to ponder on advice that was given, I read about simplistic rules, "the use of space is important", "functionality over conventionality". The book is filled with photos but no unifying text that brings a flow of ideas. I would only recommend this book if you want a condensed "how-not-to" book. Otherwise, keep browsing and please let us know of any good finds.

Book Description
“Acclaimed designer and author David James...captures the intricacy that distinguishes Celtic style. Close-up enlargements make selected areas more visible...and easily copied. There’s a virtual art gallery of projects....for whatever medium and technique you use-painting, dyes, leather, fabric, enameling, wood or slate. These lovely and engrossing patterns will make you glad you’ve joined the many who have discovered Celtic design.”—The Celtic Connection.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource!.......2001-08-03
This book by David James can be used as a source of beautiful designs which can be adapted to many media - I have used them myself to make computer art and know of someone using his designs for quilting. There is no limit to their usefulness for those enthralled by the beauty and complexity of Celtic design.
Book Description
Brilliant collection includes 50 color-rich pages of beautiful spirals, knots, designs, initials and sketches—perfect for you to trace, copy and use for jewelry, carvings, invitations, announcements. Bonus: stirring Celtic myths!
Customer Reviews:
Good source for inspiration........2005-01-17
If you are an artist looking for inspiration for your own drawings or craft projects, this book is a nice choice. The illustrations are plentiful, very clear and easy to follow. Some are just black and white line drawings, others are in full color and give you plenty of ideas on how to color your own knotwork designs. Borders, spirals, celtic crosses and decorative initials are all presented, along with a number of Davis' full-page illustrations which illustrate nicely how to work celtic patterns into your own artistic designs. Some basic historical information, myths and legends are included as well, but not in great detail--this book is mostly for the artwork and patterns only.
A lovely and colorful Celtic art resource.......1999-07-24
This is basically a "picture book" of examples of Celtic-style knotwork and images, each rendered in luscious four-color plates.
I find it most useful as a companion to the various Dover Publishing Celtic art books (including stencils, needlework, drawing guides, etc) as a visual reference on "how" to color in the black-and-white examples found in those works.
Otherwise, it's a beautiful book on its own!

Good Vaue for your money.......1999-11-24
This book is great for the more serious Leo admirers. O.k. there's not very much about Leo himself, but more about his films and that's what interests me. In this book you'll find comments from Leo on his films and working on it, but also from his co-stars and directors. In my opinion it would be even more valuable if there was more about Leo and his decisions to do a film and more about him working on the film. But still worth the money.
The one of a kind Leonardo Di Caprio book!.......1999-04-29
I really like the book because I learned so much about my favorite star, Leonardo Di Caprio. I also love the photos. Some of the pictures in the book are the ones I haven't seen before. I enjoyed reading this book so much that I didn't realize I finished it for just two hours. I have repeated reading it for about seven times. I learned some things that I did not know about Leonardo Di Caprio and his movies. I even read some news about him that I haven't heard before. I love this book!!!!It's great!!!Buy it if you are a fan of Leonardo Di Caprio.
