Book Description
This bold novel unravels the mystery and complexity of the woman Carlos Fuentes calls the first great Latin American poet. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695), poet, playwright, rhetorician, and musician, is often equated with Sappho, the lesbian poet whom Plato baptized the Tenth Muse.
The Mexican nun has fascinated readers around the world for centuries as scholars have attempted to understand her brilliance, her feminism, the affairs of her heart, her decision to enter a convent at the beginning of her luminous intellectual career.
Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, an illegitimate criolla, is sixteen when word of her self-taught erudition travels to the palace in Mexico City and she becomes an attendant to Doña Leonor Carreto, Marquesa de Mancera. Wanting only to study, confused by her love for la Marquesa, and loathe to marry, in five years Juana becomes Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in the Convent of Santa Paula of the Order of San Jerónimo. There, her quill becomes her salvation and damnation as her notoriety mounts with each new artistic commission. Popular with court and clergy, she receives a stream of guests at the convent, among them la Condesa de Paredes, who becomes Sor Juana's intimate friend. More than two decades later, after brilliantly defending her right to think, teach, and write, Sor Juana appears before the Inquisition and abruptly withdraws from the spotlight.
Mixing fiction with Sor Juana's own words, and drawing on the most recent Sor Juana scholarship, Alicia Gaspar de Alba creates the most full-bodied portrait of Mexico's Tenth Muse to date. This remarkable novel about a remarkable woman will enlighten a new generation of readers, and stoke the interest of devotees who already are captivated by the inspiring Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
An adventuresome exploration into the lyrical and historical vision of an extraordinary woman, written by an extraordinary novelist who has given us a new possibility to dream and invent Sor Juana Inés all over again.Marjorie Agosín, Wellesley College
Beautifully written, without doubt the best book I have read this year. A masterpiece.Greg Sarris, author of Watermelon Nights
This historically accurate and beautifully written novel explores the secret inclinations, subjective desires, and political struggles of the 17th-century Mexican nun and poet.
Customer Reviews:
sor juana wishes she could wake up from this one.......2007-09-25
my principle regret is that young latino students and aspiring writers are often pointed to this and other like products from the publishing mills and told they are the "literary" models to follow. the book is replete with trite, canned sentiment expressed in stiffly-worded dialogue from the mouths of two-dimensional characters. too many of the descriptions are of the flowery, cake-decoration kind. the narrative is littered with redundancy as well as words that are simply misused or incongruent with the intended meaning. someone can use a remedial course in plain, effective style. it is a shame to hear such books as this one touted as the best in current "latino literature." unfortunately, such things often get published (and praised) on the strength of an author's academic connections and fashionable political sentiments rather than the worth of the writing.
History becomes herstory.......2007-05-29
As women living in the 21st Century, we have unlimited choices. That is why it is so difficult to imagine what it must have been like for Sor Juana. She was an intellectual giant in the New World, displaying her abilities in subjects ranging from ancient history to physics. She was a self-taught scholar. Even so, she was persecuted. Not simply because her views were extreme (though they were), but because extreme views or, in fact, views at all, were considered unseemly in women. Sor Juana's story, as well as the history of early Mexico, is the inspiration for this novel.
No doubt, Alicia Gespar de Alba takes poetic license. It is impossible to know the intimate details of Sor Jauna's everyday life, but this is a good educated guess. And it is breathtaking. Each page is a heartwrenching description of the passions that tore Sor Jauna apart. Many of her own words are used in the story, and the parts that are fiction blend beautifully with them.
In addition to its revelation of an early feminist, this book is also important in its description of Colonial Mexico. In the background of Sor Juana's story, the reader is able to view the precarious mix of church and crown, whites and indians, and intellectuals and idiots. The time period, of course, is an essential part of what happens to Sor Juana, but it is an interesting subject of its own.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of feminism or Mexico or to anyone who enjoys poetry or rhetoric. Be warned, though, when you discover what this woman went through for knowledge, you may not be able to take your freedom for granted anymore.
poetic quest.......2007-02-12
I thoroughly enjoyed being drawn into the world of Sor Juana. She was a genius, a gifted poet, dramatist, philospher, scientist, theologian and humanist who radically sought her personal truth despite the constrictions of the societal and ecclesiastical institutions of her day. I surmise that Sor Juana would likely not have taken the veil has she lived in our day but she chose the only route left to her within her social position to attain some manner of intellectual freedom. Alicia Gaspar de Alba is a master storyteller who knows the art of bringing the vivid colors and textures of her subject matter to life. Though I do realize that this is a work of fiction and share the author's conjecture that Sor Juana's affections most definately rested with those of her own sex and her passionate manner of writing to the same was not simply a rhetorical device of her time, I did sometimes question her literary license with regard to specific scenes which are ambiguous at best in historical accounts, not in the slightest because I think them distasteful but simply because I think the brilliance and passion of this woman is not compounded by the "fleshing" out of her sexuality in pure fantasy. The climate of the ecclesiastical world during the inquisition and the sad state of inner conventual politics makes her luminous literary heritage even more astonishing. Though the author does tell this dark aspect of the divisions and hypocracy of some member of the Spanish Catholic Church of Sor Juana's day, she never does it gratuitiously and one senses a balance as with the priests and other nuns who support her and even try to help her remain on a path of discretion when her passions overtake her rational judgement. It is truly sad that her star disappeared too soon from the heavens that she so loved gazing into with her telescope. In any case, I found it an intensely beautiful read which left me wanting to know more of the woman behind the words. I recommend this highly to anyone who wants to know Sor Juana without the censorship of other admirers of hers who would deny her one of the most elementary forces behind her creative working - her passion for the two women who helped her become fully the muse that she was.
A Note From the Author: Alicia Gaspar de Alba.......2005-08-25
I've just seen the new historical novel on Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Hunger's Brides by Paul Anderson, and the terrific review it got in the New York Times on Monday, August. 23, 2005. Although the heft of the book is daunting, I look forward to reading it and comparing it to my own book, Sor Juana's Second Dream, which was published in 1999, and which, due to the limited distribution and publicity resources of a university press , has never gotten the kind of press or promotion that would have helped sell out the first print run by now. Perhaps Mr. Anderson's book will spur a mainstream interest in the amazing life of Mexico's "tenth muse," and readers will pick up a copy of both his book and mine, sold here on Amazon for the outrageous price of $12.95 for the hardback. To quote Sor Juana: "from what I keep silent, you will infer what it is I cannot say."
A Must Read.......2005-05-05
This is a very inspiring story of a strong-willed woman determined to defy the intellectual oppression of men during the seventeenth century. She can be compared to England's early feminist--Mary Astell--for her steadfast support of women's intellectual advancement.
It is a moving story, very sad, but essential.

Book Description
The last time Cole MacKenzie saw Maggie O'Shea, the daughter of his gold-hunting partner, Pop, she was a scruffy kid with dirt on her cheeks. Now the tomboy is all grown up -- and how! -- and she's Cole's sworn responsibility, since the suspicious passing of his dear old friend. But being Maggie's new legal guardian may be more than the footloose loner can handle -- especially since he's been aching of late to hold her close and tight.
How dare Cole MacKenzie think he can run her life! True, she's had a crush on him since forever, but Maggie won't be treated like a child -- especially not by a powerfully good-looking wanderer who makes her flush with wanting him. Cole says he's not ready to stay put, yet he's not going anywhere until he's satisfied Pop's death was a natural one. But will that leave Maggie enough time to prove to the man how much of a woman she's become?

The Best Series I've Ever Read But..........2005-02-08
This is the series I've ever read but probably my least favorite book in the series. It wasn't bad but the other books in this series are pretty hard to measure up to. Cole & Maggie were both very likable but it just took them (him actually) too long to find love. This book deals more with the mystery of Maggie's father then it does with a romance. They had only had 1 or 2 intimate moments until about page 315 so if you are looking for the hot & steamy romance book then I wouldn't recommend this one but for anybody else that is following this series then this good book. The Mackenzie books are all an enjoyable read........2003-10-02
Cole's story is fine but it's nothing very unique or very surprising. The characters are likeable, the story line plausible and everything turns out as it should. Enjoyed it for a quick read but wouldn't read it a second time so on my rating system its only a 3+ maximum. (loved luke's story and loved jarred's.) I imagine with a family so full of hunks, it would be hard to come up with a masterpiece every time.
THE MACKENZIES: COLE-Cole and Maggie-SPOILERS.......2003-01-15
Favorite scene with Maggie-
Telling Keith and Caroline that they belong together.
Favorite scene with Cole-
Saving the animals and Juan from the fire.
Favorite scene together-
The total chaos brought on by Cole pretending to hold Maggie up and Maggie having Cole arrested.
Cole's tomboy Maggie was all grown-up, and all woman!.......2002-12-22
Adventurer Cole Mackenzie has been every where and done most every thing. He has panned for gold in Alaska, been a Texas Ranger, and gambled in the gaming halls of San Francisco. Now, Cole yearns for the sanctuary of his family's ranch. But there is one more task he needs to accomplish before he can return home. A mysterious wire has found its way to Cole from his former partner, and good friend, Mick "Pop" O'Shea. Pop has asked Cole to come to his hometown of Lawford, New Mexico and help him solve a mystery. So Cole puts off his return to the Triple M ranch, and makes his way to Pop's home. Once there though Cole is confronted by an unexpected turn of events, Pop has mysteriously died, leaving Cole the guardian of his rambunctious daughter, Maggie.
Margaret "Maggie" O'Shea has been in love with Cole Mackenzie since she was a scrawny Tomboy of fourteen. Being dragged from mine town to mine town by her father, she had very little time to mature into anything but this. Then at sixteen when Pop began to realize that his Maggie needed to learn to become a lady he had said good-bye to his partner Cole, and sent Maggie off to finishing school, while he returned home to start a stage coach line. Now Maggie is confronted with her worst nightmare, Cole MacKenzie, the only man she has ever loved, has returned back in her life as her legal guardian.
The Mackenzies/Cole by Ana Leigh is the latest in her Mackenzies saga. Cole is the oldest son of Cleve Mackenzie and his wife Adee, whom we met in the third installment. The love story that is portrayed in this installment between hard hearted Cole, and warm and loving Maggie is hard to follow at times. If you are a true fan of this series then you will of course read this book. The story could stand alone even if you haven't read the other books. Cole and Maggie embark on some wild adventures to find out what truly happened to Pop. Along the way they meet up with some interesting characters, and there are some subplots involving the towns people. However, there are no true villains in this story, and overall I was disappointed in this latest installment. It just wasn't as good as the others.

Excellent Description of the Everyday work of the Spirit.......2001-12-05
Garret Keizer's book, A Dresser of Sycamore trees is a thoughtful and carefully written book which describes the "everyday" work of the Holy Spirit in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Keizer's descriptions of his friends and neighbors in this small town are tremendous. He does an amazing job seeing God's presence in his everyday work and ministry as a vicar of a small church and a high school English teacher. He reminds me of what St. Francis is quoted to have said, "Preach the gospel. If necessary, speak." Garret Keizer preaches with his actions and through his descriptions of the lives of "ordinary" people. This is a must - read.
Taking the ordinary to the Divine....me.......1998-08-25
Garrett Keizer's story will settle even the most adventurous spirit from searching to enfolding an inner Spirit much more gratifying.
Soon to be a classic, sincere, humble, excellently written.......1998-03-08
I am shocked that the publisher would describe this book as "a surprise critical sensation." It's prose alerts us to one Christian's view of the invisible Christ, manifest in people, things, and incidences. It is excellently, thought provokingly written. I cannot with my own words evoke the message of this book, so I will defer to the author, in a quote from his work. . . ."It is about mysticism and orthodoxy, ordinariness and sanctity, unity and diversity and about the intersection of all these things in a design that looks to me like a cross." -pg. 150 Read this book because it is about a common man doing the uncommon and thereby transforming his world, our world, into a place "set apart" for divine possiblities.
A Model for Anyone considering Ministry or Ordination.......1997-11-05
The story of a man who was a deacon and priest almost without knowing it, and how he ultimately came to be ordained to serve a rural town and church as their priest. Moving and poignant for persons called to serve as deacon or priest who have already been ministers.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written, unhelpful advice, excellent pictures.......2006-03-18
I am thoroughly disappointed with the information in this book. I was looking for a guide that would help me with all of my shore excursions. Instead, each of my cities have half of a page or so of basic information.
The book is poorly written. Parts of it are incomprehensible. It is written for the British traveller but is not written in the Queen's English! Other parts are filled with travel agent gibberish.
The pictures were outstanding, as is true of most Insight Guides. I was just hoping that with the Discovery Channel affiliation that the content would have improved. I was wrong.
"All the information you will ever need on cruising the Med".......2006-01-05
Of the many guide and reference books that mention cruising in the Mediterranean, I think I may have come across the ultimate reference book on the subject -- "Mediterranean Cruises", a compilation of expertise from a number of well-known journalists, editors and contributors.
Like other reference guides, this book arms the reader with all the information required to decide on when and where one might select as cruise destinations within the Mediterranean. However, apart from the detailed and accurate descriptions of places, sites, cities and towns, I would also recommend this book solely on the quality of its photography. Should any college or university offer credit- hours on Mediterranean Cruises, here is a book that, in my mind, would certainly qualify as required reading.
However, I wouldn't suggest the book be read like a textbook. You may want to pick and choose your areas or places of interest. Here is where you will find the book's index to be second to none. And, while surprises are oftentimes pleasant, I believe when it comes to cruising, being prepared with as much information as possible prior to departure can prevent an unpleasant cruise experience. Having taken several Mediterranean cruises years ago with my family, I would have welcomed having this "bible" handy during those preparations.
Like all other Insight Guides, in addition to providing detailed maps and superb descriptions of all destinations, this book offers its readers a wealth of travel tips. If I may borrow the motto from the Boy Scouts, I believe anyone who reads "Mediterranean Cruises" prior to actually taking one will certainly be prepared.
Book Description
For over two decades, Michelangelo Signorile has been among the most outspoken and controversial critics of American politics and culture. As a gay activist and journalist, he earned acclaim as the father of the “outing” phenomenon. Today, he remains one of the most widely read and talked about gay muckrakers. In Hitting Hard (Signorile’s first new book since his national bestseller, Outing Yourself), the author tackles the most heated topics of debate among gay people and the political left.
Customer Reviews:
Signorile does it again........2006-02-25
I have a great deal of admiration and respect for this man. I think he is intellectually honest and pulls no punches. Always enjoy his take on topics and people he writes about.
National treasure.......2005-08-30
Once again, Michele Signorile has put out a collection of articles that express -- clearly, elegantly, wittily and pertinently -- the best thinking on gay issues being thought today. With Larry Kramer and a few others, he has been the voice of sane homosexuality for quite some time, saying things that should long ago not have needed to be said -- but wow! the attention span does seem to get shorter every day. I hope, therefore, that he will continue to say them as often and as copiously as he deems necessary, and for many years to come. I most seriously urge every gay man in America (and elsewhere too) to read him and to LISTEN. He really knows what he is talking about --and there are truly not many men around these days, in any sphere, about whom one can say the same! I do not know him, but I love him. He is a national treasure. Long may he flourish. I eagerly await his every article and his next book.

Customer Reviews:
Flaws and Applause.......2005-12-08
Wensley Clarkson's portrait of Tom Cruise seems balanced and well researched. We see Cruise as a competent actor whose private life is sometimes detrimental to his reputation. The incident cited by Clarkson on page 84 confirms this impression:
'Cruise was in New York's Hard Rock Cafe with his buddy Russell Crowe. To entertain the crowd, the two actors had been reciting some lines from 'Hamlet'. It was an impromptu performance and warmly received. They should have left it at that, but the booze quickly took control. Cruise, wearing a T-shirt that read 'Instant Idiot... Just Add Beer', did his hilarious Donald Duck walk along the bar while Crowe threw cell phones at him. The two finally fell into a stupefied heap and were hogtied by Crowe's friend, the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, and dragged out to a waiting limo. Some money changed hands and the incident was hushed up.'
Wensley Clarkson's biography is a revelation.
Good book about a handsome jerk.......2005-07-23
Tom Cruise is handsome and misguided.
As an actor he is ok.
But his support for Scientology shows what a buffoon he is.
Pretty good book.......2005-06-12
Book reveals some of the details of Cruise's Scientology involvement (probably unnecessary now, in the light of his recent flood of interviews) but is even more enlightening when the author tells how the cult tried to shut him up while he researched Cruise's membership in Scientology.
Book Description
Tom Cruise is the most successful film star of his generation. From his brilliant debut in Risky Business through Oscar-nominated roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, to the massive Mission Impossible series, Cruise's hit rate is phenomenal. But lately it's his personal life that's been making headlines, including his infamous interview on the "Oprah Winfrey Show," his whirlwind romance with Katie Holmes, and his outspoken views on Scientology. Now, Ian Johnstone tells the real story of the making of Tom Cruise—both the man and his work.

I have to tell you, things are good. I am . . . I am . . . Whooo! . . . I am very good. I just returned from a walk and . . . ha! Things. Are. Good. I've got a bowl of hard kibble with some soft stuff mixed in. My name's on the bowl! I am passionate about this lamb-and-rice recipe. What's been going on? haha! I'm so in love with this b****! hahaha! I can't . . . I'm so . . . I can't restrain myself. hahahahahaha! We met at the park. She was in the run for little dogs . . . 'cause she's, well . . . ha! She's petite. And I was over in the big run and . . . I am in love. I can't be cool. This b**** is . . . I have total respect for her. Yesterday on my five o'clock, I just sniffed her a** for a while and then we frolicked. I can't even describe it . . . we chased squirrels . . . frisked, you know . . . she likes to be physical, too . . . and to fetch and . . . We're like anyone. We tore into this shoe and just had a ball. I'll see her tomorrow on my 8 a.m. I am happy. I am . . . hahahahahaha! She is a wonderful, wonderful animal. I can't . . . words don't . . . owooooo! I can't sit or stay, man. I need to get up on my hind legs and holler, you know! I gotta pee on something. And I don't care what the other animals do or what their masters say. Listen, there are always gonna be pit bulls. There are always gonna be Dobermans. And cynical little pugs. And you know what? I've never cared what others think about me. I've always been this way. I'm living my life. And I am fortunate. And I am excited. I am fortunate and excited.
Do you know the history of crate training? 'Cause I do. Don't talk about things you don't understand. Like saying dogs are wild. Dogs are wild-that is glib. Dogs are . . . I've done the research; there are crates that they put us in to quote unquote train us. They throw rattlesnakes at us. Electric-shock tags! I'm not making this up. This is . . . it's history. Crate training just masks the problem. These dogs, they become zombies. You can totally handle disobedience naturally by saying "No!" and "Bad dog!" It works. Look at the facts. Shock tags?! I am disgusted.
hahaha! I fetch! Boy, I love to fetch. I am totally fired up when I fetch. And nap. I've got a great dog bed with leopard spots where I can power-nap, man. I've got awesome chew toys, too. I'm passionate about this rubber T-bone with peanut butter hidden in it. Here's the point: do you know there are strays on the street eating out of the Dumpsters behind Chinese restaurants? I'm not making that up. I care about those mutts. But they don't know what the options are. They don't know that you can live in an apartment and get fed by a human. These hounds, man-when it thunders, they think the world is ending. Because they haven't done the research. Do you know the statistics? A hundred and fifty dogs are being fixed every ten minutes. A hundred and fifty. Every ten minutes. I can't . . . that's just wrong. And I speak out about it.
There's this yellow Lab, Clover, who I see in the dog run. And this is a totally great purebred. He's a . . . ha! He's . . . he's a great guy. I've got enormous respect for him. But he's overweight. You know why? 'Cause they're feeding him scraps from the table. And he can't fetch or chase without getting winded. That is sad. I care about him, and I care about the apricot poodle with the plaid socks on his feet, and I care about the basenji with the drooling issues. I want to hear good news. I like to see a Rottweiler get a bath or a shepherd savor a Milk-Bone. That makes me happy.
What these beggars don't understand is that if you hover around the dinner table long enough and you're observant food will come. Food's gonna come naturally, man. They're gonna drop stuff and you can-hahahahaha! But, seriously, begging is a huge issue among our species. I did the research. And I speak out. I speak out about misinformation. Do you know people think that one dog year is seven human years? That is false. Total fabrication. It's approximate. Flea and tick collars? There are vitamins for that. And your master can totally put that capsule in a slab of butter and you'll never know you ate it.
owooowowowooo!!! This b****, she's kind, she's caring, she's a wonderful, wonderful dog. It's like . . . wow. And I don't want to compare, but I've never felt this way before. We might have a litter. One thing at a time. It's joy, man. That's what it is. Look at my tail! I'm panting 24/7. hahahaha! I purr, even. Like a cat, man. The cat looks at me and he's, like, "What did they put in your kibble?" haha! I don't care. I've never cared what that cat thinks. But I care about him even though he's a cynic. I care about the glib parakeet and those jerks the gerbils, but I'm not sure those are the same gerbils as before. hahaha! Those gerbils! We have fun. I bark, they run on the wheel. What's that? The leash jingling! Is it eight already? Walk?! owooohahahahahaharuffruffruffha!!! I love living my life!

A more adult level recent biography is needed........2003-05-18
I knew this was a kids' book, but it seemed to be the most interesting and recent biography of Tom Cruise, based on the reviews that I looked at on this website. I am a very big Tom Cruise fan, so I decided to take the risk.
I was a bit shocked to find out that the customer review on this website that claimed that Cruise had made punnish errors in reading movie titles seems to have been entirely fabricated. I don't understand why something like that isn't removed from the site.
The book was ok. I learned some things about Cruise's career. There were some nice photos. Still, it wasn't an adult book. I would have liked something more meaty and in depth. I guess that would be hard to write, since he's not a person who likes to reveal intimate details about himself. I suppose eventually some person in his entourage will start talking and we'll actually find out something about him. We'll just have to be patient.
This would be a good book to give to a child who is dyslexic and feeling discouraged about learning to read, though.
A good starting point..........2002-05-21
This cute little book gives insight into Tom's career from the beginning through his role in "Jerry Maguire". It covers his early interest in acting, as well as his struggle with dyslexia (which seems to be mentioned on almost every page). I gained a deeper respect for Cruise after reading about his trials dealing with the handicap and his non-compromising dedication to perfecting his job as actor, producer, director. This is definitely an enjoyable book!
Pig-ignorance no bar to fame and fortune.......2002-02-12
The public only see the glamour - but Phelan Powell shows the significant obstacles Tom Cruise has overcome in order to live his life of pampered opulence. In Cruise's case dyslexia was the obstacle - it nearly cost him the part of the barman in "Cocktail" (he thought it was a film about cockatiels and told his agent he "didn't do parrots") and he bought his own wildebeeste to research the part of Lt Maverick Mitchell in "Top Gnu".
