General Dann doesn't understand the point of rebuilding because what they achieve will be lost and someone will have to rebuild again someday. Griot wishes Dann would act. The people still love Dann anyway. The book ends.

This was the type of book that I finished because I was hoping the ending would be worth it somehow. It wasn't, and I wanted to throw the book across the room when I had finished. The best that can be said is that it embodies Dann's sense of futility in engaging in any action. And boy, does that NOT make for good reading.

After the first novel, "Mara and Dan," which was a stimulating foray into the Earth's future, this novel was a disappointment. It seems as if Lessing had a gun held to her head forcing her to write a sequel or else, when in fact she had nothing new to say about these characters or the setting.

I am currently reading "The Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog: A Novel." It's the sequel to Mara and Dann which is number one on my favorites list. This book reads in typical Lessing fashion; propelled by stream of consciousness of the main character. Dann's dilemma, observations and musings, presented in omniscient third person, is the sole narrative. The first chapters seem to be using the spare voice of one re-telling an ancient fable or distant memory. There are few adjectives and detail is saved for seemingly random moments and Dann's inner dialogue. I've already read five years of Dann's life and I still don't feel that the story has begun. There is only the barest of character investment. Seemingly important characters are introduced and discarded within pages. If you have not read the first book then I doubt you would feel any character sympathy at all. As it is, I am familiar with the world Dann inhabits and I am excited to return.

This isn't the desperate, fast paced adventure that "Mara and Dann" was but it does explore some interesting themes. For instance, Dann is obsessed with what he does not know. He is constantly tantalized by fragments of knowledge and remnants of truth. He is frustrated by the complacent incuriosity of those around him and it begs the question: When are we satisfied with our knowledge, world, condition? When do we stop asking questions? It has me examining my own desire to learn and I can empathize with his frustration of apathy.

I haven't finished the book. As I said I am still waiting for the story to begin but I've had that same anticipatory feeling in other Lessing novels and found that I was missing the story, the crux, because I was expecting something else. Once I realized this I could settle down and appreciate the challenge and story she was sharing with the reader. She is a unique writer and her style defies stereotype. Doris Lessing is a true artist whose talent and method of conveyance would be impossible to teach.

On a lighter note a "snow dog" has been introduced as a central character and I like stories that have fuzzy animal friends.

Read it if you are a Lessing fan but not as an introduction to her work.

This novel was jumped on in anticipation of picking up my travels with Mara and Dann. Unfortunately Doris Lessing had other plans for a major character. While this book is a good read in that it does allow one to follow onward with a good story, because a major character is missing-the book is not as rich as the first book "Mara and Dann". Once again we study mental illness in a world unsettled as the darkness of a child's youth always surfaces to haunt him. While Doris Lessing is a wonderful writer, this story could have been told better...more like the first...But its fluidity is missing...Still an all right red.

Mrs Lessing continues telling the story of Mara and Dann whom we left at the Farm in Ifrik in "Mara and Dann". Dann soon returns to the Centre together with Griot - who had been a soldier under General Dann back in Agre - Ali, her daughter Tamar and the snow dog called Ruff. They plan to rescue as many refugees from the south as possible and turn them into the Red Blanket army. At the Centre, they assemble all the technical knowledge left there by the long extinct civilisations of Yerrup because the place is slowly sinking into the marshland. Finally they make their way for a city in the Tundra where they hope to set up a community based on the knowledge the scribes and savants studied and collected at the Centre.
It is a slightly disappointing sequel to "Mara and Dann" which lacks the latter's intensity because the plot is sluggish and less like the adventure the reader enjoyed in the first novel.

    DIAMONDS CAN BE DEADLY is a slam-dunk of a read. Lovelace is one of those writers that can wind a story up to the breaking points and shove it at a headlong pace to a blazing finish. Jordan and T. J. are both realistically portrayed, and their physical attraction scorches the pages. Along the way, Lovelace manages to bring to light several interesting factoids about the emerald trade, security and cutting-edge spytech.

    The book is recommended reading for all Lovelace fans as well as anyone who loves romantic suspense with thrill-a-minute pacing. Readers who haven't tried Lovelace's books in the past are truly encouraged to jump on with this one.

    Peter Moon has researched the Montauk Project at length and spoken with several people involved in the projects. In this book of the SkyBooks Montauk series, the author explores the Nazi connection to Montauk, the occult, and UFO technologies. There are a bizarre series of connections and synchronicities in the story, with as many questions raised as answers provided. Peter Moon is a talented storyteller of the strange and conspiratorial, and he has produced an intriguing book here. The title "Black Sun" refers to an occult sect and the beliefs related to it, including the idea of inner Earth civilizations. This book will be enjoyable for all those exploring the Montauk saga with an open mind.

    This book is a real page-turner, I couldn't put it down! This book is much better written than the two books I have read previously (The Montauk Files and Montauk: The Alien Connection), and the research is thorough. Connections were made that dovetailed nicely with my own research. If you get nothing else from these books, *get it* that the world is much bigger and much more complex than it seems, and all is not as it appears to be. If you are wondering why the world today seems unfathomable by our own limited forms of understanding, it is because of the undercurrents that we are not made privy to by those who are in control. If you don't get that, it is certainly not because these writers didn't try...

    "The Black Sun: Montauk's Nazi-Tibetan Connection" is one of my favorite books in the Montauk series. As with all of the Montauk books, this book is fairly wild at times and is enjoyable reading. The book covers numerous issues and references many books, yet pieces them together in a unique way. I found the information on the occult interest of the Nazis and the role Tibet supposedly played, to be of most interest.

    The book gets contains several photographs of supposed Nazi aircraft that look like UFOs. There are also several interesting illustrations throughout the book.

    While you may find a few legitimate interesting facts and connections buried within Moon's work, be advised that to find them you will have dig through a multitude of almost ridiculous logical leaps that will make you wonder if Moon is a tad schizophrenic, actually believing the nonsense he espouses OR if his ludicrous jumps from one "splendid synchronicity" to another are just an attempt to fill the pages in order to make a buck. If you don't have the stomach for B.S... either read this in short doses, like I have, or don't read it at all...

    I was introduced to Richard's work through a friend who had been in the Marines for years. I carry this book with me when I travel and turn to it often when I need to hear a piece of wisdom or guidance to move me along on my path. His voice is compassionate but strong - it's a beautiful model for how to be with my own questioning self. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's looking for insight towards a more integrated path of body, spirit, and mind.

    Richard Strozzi-Heckler's book is a collection of essays, each standing on its own, but weaving a theme that Richard teaches in all of his programs -- a place of "center."

    I am studying somatics with Richard through his Strozzi Institute, and I keep returning to "Holding the Center," re-reading his stories and distinctions around what creates center in our lives (connection to self, place, others, etc.).

    Later in this slim collection, you'll find rich descriptions of somatic length (connection to what we care about), somatic width (how we connect on the social dimension), and somatic depth (how we connect our inner and outer worlds).

    Richard describes many ways in which our bodies tell stories, such as the fallen, caved-in stance of "capitulation," which has lost connection to vision and a meaningful "for sake of what" in life. He talks about the balance between "containment" and "contact" in the social dimension. And, he talks about the different shapes of the "emerging self" compared to the current physical form in a person's body. The sections on somatics are really quite rich.

    Study of the body is a gift, since the body can only live in the present, "never lies," and is how we put our inspiration and ideas into action in the world.

    Spend time with this book. It is poetic at times and always thought-provoking.

    I don't know what words I can use to adequately describe Dr. Heckler's work. Enlightening, thought provoking and comforting are among the few. As a former serviceman and martial artist this book provided me with a wonderful insight into the world around me. Dr. Heckler has put a wonderful mix of real life experiences and combined them with a incredible insight. I was particularily moved with the section on 'Community' when he attended an international health converence and met an Ojibway Native American named Russell. I have read this book many times when things in my life get complicated and I would recommend it highly to anyone who seeks a balance in their life, or just a relaxing feel-good book for rainy days.

      This study covers the latent demand outlook for boxed assorted chocolate Christmas candies across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for boxed assorted chocolate Christmas candies. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

          Giving Chocolates by freelance illustrator Linda Webb is a delightful Christmas oriented activities book presenting twelve pre-cut, pre-scored, gift boxes which children can punch out themselves. Kids can easily follow the simple instructions for assembly, and then fill them with their favorite chocolates, candies, or other small items for inexpensive gifts or stocking stuffers. There are even gift tags printed on the side of each box.             This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "boxed assorted chocolate Christmas candies" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                          This book was presented much like some of the home décor magazines. It shows an entire room, then the projects/ideas are numbered with instructions. There are many quick projects and a few that require some minor carpentry skills. There are ideas for many types of decorating styles, i.e. country, contemporary, retro, modern and a kind of Tuscany/Old World look.

                          The book address projects in all the major rooms in the house and the chapters are divided by these rooms. The photos are clear and full color and most of the instructions are bulleted text. There are not many photos of step-by-step instructions, but the text does describe how to complete the project.

                          This is a well-made, high quality hardcover artbook collecting color artwork from the manga (comic) X/1999 (as it is published in the US). X/1999 is a supernatural, apocalyptic story about destiny and choices leading toward the end of the world, written and illustrated by a team of women collectively called CLAMP. The artwork here focuses on the numerous characters. As a loose generalization, the illustrations are either elegant or bloody. The characters themselves have the delicate, slender designs of all CLAMP characters. The female character illustrations shine here: the sword-wielding priestess Arashi, the innocent Yuzuriha Nekoi, and the fire-wielding Karen Kasumi, in particular. Other illustrations, particularly involving lead characters Kamui and Kotori, are scenes of violence or impending violence. X/1999 the comic has scenes of dismemberment; none of these illustrations reach that point, but they are not all sweetness and light. If you have read any comics by CLAMP (such as X/1999 or Rayearth) and think the art looks good in black and white, these full-color illustrations will show you CLAMP can reach an even higher level. One last note: this is a Japanese book, so it opens and reads in the opposite direction (but don't worry, it sits just as nicely on a bookshelf).

Some are in black and white and others are in color but ALL portray Frank Sinatra as he was - without the sugar coating. The pictures gave me a whole new take on Sinatra's life. I found out things I never knew before about his personality, his devotion to his music, his late night parties and his temper. I recommend this book to anyone, not just Sinatra fans, who wants to get an insight on this legend's life through the beautiful photos of Life magazine.
