Great Literature.......2007-09-11
Lawrence Durrell has a beautiful mind. He's fun, very intelligent and witty. His biography is fascinating and he is uniquely qualified to write these novels, The Alexandria Quartet, set in the Mediterranian. The strengths of the novels are their evocation of the place and time, the characters and their lovely, loving interractions. Some of the observations on art and love are a bit of a stretch, however. Durrell himself is composite of the characters Darley, Balthazar and Arnauti. He's Irish by nationality but he grew up around the Mediterranian.
The Alexandria Quartet is one of the great works of the 20th century, especially if you wish you had lived in a simpler time and more interesting place, and had some interesting loves. Almost up to Ulysses, maybe not quite so pretentious.
no title.......2006-01-17
This series so far - - "The Alexandria Quartet" - - has been one of the most interesting and wonderful things I have ever read. Memorable in every way. To be savored and remembered. Just simply a dazzling accomplishment by Durrell. "Mountolive" is written in 3rd person, unlike the first two, and it explores more of the motives and facts of the same people in the same time period - yet another layer - than of emotions and longings. And now we finally get to the bottom of Nessim, Justine, Narouz, and Pursewarden. And we learn of the conspiracy behind the first two novels, and we learn of Mountolive's life. All these people are so alive in my mind, Mountolive being such a sad, pathetic man. Yet once again Egypt and Alexandria take center stage. What a writer this man was!
Not a bad way to start.......2003-06-20
I read this book before reading the other 3 in the quartet, and I absolutely loved it. It made reading the others irresistible, and yet I believe this third edition is the best. The love stories are incredibly deep and diverse, and Durrell's writing is both beautiful and inspiring.
Mountolive is an Englishman working with the Foreign Service who comes to know his Dionysian self in the humidity and turmoil of early 20th century Egypt. He falls in love with his married hostess, and this relationship leaves him capable of loving only one woman and one place. The other notable couples portray a stunning array of what drives people toward love. A desire for power drives Justine and Nessim together as it does much more subtlely in the vignette about Amaril and Semira. This book stands out on its own but leaves you dying to find out more about these rich characters.
Gritty underpinings finally revealed.......2001-03-30
Poor Mountolive. This is a tale of his rise to success and his parallel loss of being able to respond humanely, and his ultimate debasement. In addtion, Durrell continues to remove layers of the Alexandrian social web: Justine's motivations are different again. I worry that they will change again in the last of the series. Motivations for love continue to be explored. I wish I had started a list when I started reading these books of all the different nuances of love and various motivations. It really has made me think.
If you read the first two of the quartet, you cannot afford to miss this installment. It really helps you understand the mysteries. Of course, Durrell continues in his mastery of the language. Descriptions continue to be lush.
Third place in The Quartet not deserved !.......2000-04-02
Mountolive is a welcome new point of view on the events, after Justine and Balthazar. It helped me put things together before I read Clea. I can even say that I found it 'refreshing'. Next time I read The Quartet (and I surely will), I might begin with this book.

Book Description
USA Today bestselling author Julia London, "a gifted and versatile author" (Publishers Weekly), introduces a sexy, wildly romantic and emotionally charged new trilogy in which three aristocratic young ladies, upon discovering they are destitute, resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams.
When the young ladies of the Fairchild family learn that their stepfather has absconded with their late mother's fortune, Ava, the eldest, hunts down the notoriously wealthy rakehell Jared Broderick, the Marquis of Middleton and heir to a dukedom. Much to her shock and delight, the marquis sweeps her into a whirlwind romance and proposes marriage. But after their passionate wedding night, Ava discovers Jared has ulterior motives of his own. Not only does he expect her to deliver an heir while he continues to enjoy a rogue's life, but Ava also suspects she is a pawn in her husband's quest for revenge. Marriages of convenience work for some, but for Ava a loveless bond won't do. So she devises a bold plan to confront her husband's demons so that he might be free to choose to give her his heart for the right reason: because she is the only woman he will ever truly desire.

Delightful "marriage of convenience" novel.......2007-04-08
"Hazards" was my first experience reading a historical romance by Julia London. It is the first in the "Desperate Debutantes" series, the stories of three girls who lost their inheritance to an unscrupulous step-father. While Ava has some faults as a heroine, it doesn't detract from the story. Jared is a marquis and has a very strained relationship with his father, the duke. The relationship between Ava & Jared is strained at first, but becomes more romantic as the story progresses. I'm looking forward to Ms. London's next book in the series, "The Perils of Pursuing a Prince".
wonderfully enjoyable.......2007-03-10
This is my first Julia London book and I enjoyed it completely. Good solid characters, well written. I highly recommend it. The Regency period is one I would have loved to have lived -- as an aristocrat with antibiotics of course!!
Breathe Taking!.......2007-01-07
I seriously couldn't put the book down. It was a riveting love story. I really got into it. I think that if you are looking for a good romance then this a good one to pick. You'll love it. Well I did so I hope you too.
Lightweight Regency.......2006-11-22
I found this book lightweight - not in its physical properties (it was a satisfyingly chunky book at nearly 400 pages) but in terms of its content. The basic story is that Jared, the Marquis of Middleton, is a rake who has numerous affairs but has no wife and legal heir. His father, the Duke of Redford, wants him to settle down and get a legitimate heir but Jared is unwilling.
Ava and her sister Phoebe discover, after their mother's death, that their stepfather will not give them any money - they merely have their small dowries left. Therefore they need to get some money in order to continue to live acceptably and to provide employment for the various people that they have helped (Ava's lady's maid is a former prostitute, the butler is another lame duck, etc).
Of course Ava hits on the plan of marrying the Marquis of Middleton to solve their problems and, spookily, he hits on the plan of marrying Ava to shut his father up. So they marry. After a successful wedding night they become estranged, the reason being that Ava wants his love and thinks he's still seeing his mistress. Jared believes he can't love, it's not within him, so keeps away from his wife - apart from telling her he needs an heir.
It's often said that authors should "show, not tell" what's going on in their characters' lives. This is a very true adage in respect to this book - Julia London TELLS us all the time what people are feeling but we can't really sense/detect this from their behaviour. It's pretty tricky to understand why Jared likes Ava and puts up with her being pretty annoying. And why he just doesn't tell her outright he's not still keeping a mistress - the Big Misunderstanding doesn't work properly when it could so easily be discussed. There's a side plot about an illegitimate son and Ava's cousin travelling in Wales to visit her family (which is no doubt a set up for another book) but I found this book generally pretty dull, I often put it down with boredom and it didn't even have any interesting historical vignettes to keep me interested. As always, the American author included some Americanisms in grammar and speech - and the most notable of these, for me, is the choice of names; I don't think that either Jared or Ava were names commonly used in the Regency. Jared, being a biblical name, might just have turned up - Ava is a German name which I believe first started occurring at the end of the 19th century, so would not have been in this historical/geographical timeframe. What does this say about the author's research?
If you just want basic escapist reading with a dishy leading man and a beautiful heroine then you might like this book. If you want an interesting, in-depth and worthwhile Regency then read Georgette Heyer or Laura Kinsale's "Flowers From The Storm" and leave this book alone.
Ignore the negative reviews - deeply moving love story!!.......2006-11-09
Oh my anyone that does not see this book as a beautiful love story well I just do not understand them. Someone discribed this couple as miserable and depressing. Truly I just did not see them that way at all. From the very first moment Jared met Ava there was something between them - even if it was just a chemistry. You could feel it. Of course they both had their hidden reasons for marrying. Poor Jared had been jerked around so much his entire life by his cold father the Duke he was just trying to marry someone that he might actually be able to tolerate, rather than the cold pathetic woman that the Duke had selected. And Ava was just trying to have some say so in her future before her horrible stepfather returned from France and then would accept the proposal of a man Ava could not tolerate. However, once these two married slowly things began to change. Ava fell in love. Jared, was actually a pretty good husband. Even though Ava did not realize it he had not further contact with his mistress and he intended to be faithful. He did not understand love, and felt that perhaps he was incapable of giving Ava the love she wanted. But as this couple learns to deal with each other they truly do come together and actually begin to have many more good days than bad. Of course Ava wants 100% of Jared's love and it seems for awhile that he just cannot deliver. It does take Jared awhile to come to his senses but the process for one so devoid of love most of his life would not be easy to recognize love when it finally touches him. Jared basically is a good and caring man. And I truly found this to be a very deep and moving love story. If this is the beginning of a trio of books I hope the other two are as good. This one is a complete keeper!!

Is this hitting the Bob Hope syndrome?.......2002-06-27
I first read Callahan's Crosstime Saloon back in college, like the early 80's so I've been a fan for quite awhile. I really enjoyed that book, and also each of the subsequent Callahan books Robinson has put out over the last 20 years.
This is not at the same level of quality and originality that the earlier books were. The Callahan Touch felt like he's really writing for his die-hard fans who are easier and more lenient on the rough spots. Would someone "get this" if they happened to find a copy at the library? Would it stand on its own? It's sort of like all those Star Trek paperbacks they've written over the last decade, if you love the characters, you love being able to keep reading about them, even in a sub-par tale. This book is where the series starts to be about a cult rather than simply telling a story about a unique group of people. They are starting to be larger and better than life. The blur between fictional characters and events, and the desire to have them exist in real life gets a little fuzzed. (Callahan's Key will take it even further down this path.) . Look, I love the stories but I'm not converting to a religion. What is the old saying? "It is the story, and not the teller"? I don't care if Spider is a cool guy or not, I just want a good story to read and maybe think about. Spider seems to have begun to be in it for the money. Not a bad thing at all, it's just it was so much more fun when it was about just the story.
But, who really cares? I'm critical because I expect a lot based on the enjoyment I've had with this group of characters over the years. This is, as always, a clever, fun, witty, and enjoyable read. If you've read Robinson before, you will enjoy the Callahan Touch and know he has better stuff out there. If this is your first one, find his earlier stuff now. You're in for a treat!
I'd really love to see Spider write one more fun, old-style Callahan novel. I'd hate to have Spider become like Bob Hope, famous for doing something no one remembers anymore, just that he's famous for being famous.
Really fun, light SF.......2002-03-16
I seem to have started in the middle of this series. First, I read Callahan's Legacy because it was the only one my library had. Then, I found this book in my local used bookstore. So, not only am I out of order, but I'm reading backwards.
But I don't really think that matters. I'm still really enjoying this series from Spider Robinson--the stories of a bunch of really strange folks that hang around a bar, whether the proprietor is the titular Mike Callahan or the narrator Jake Stonebender.
The plot is negligible, when it exists. The main draw is all the varied characters and their wild personalities and how they interact with one another.
Beware, however, the puns come fast and furious. But, if, like me, you think playing with words is the highest form of humor, then pull up a stool because here is a place where "shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased."
A pun-filled laugh fest........1999-01-08
This book had me laughing all of the way through with it's wacky characters and hilarious puns.
It's 'Opening Night' at the bar I'd most like to visit.......1997-03-26
I recommend this book strongly to anyone who enjoys Robinson's style and past books. Although it isn't necessary to read the previous `Callahan' books to enjoy this one, it will add to your enjoyment and understanding. Jake opens his new bar, "Mary's Place", to replace the bar destroyed in a minor nuclear explosion at the end of a previous book. Robinson introduces some delightfully odd new characters in "The Callahan Touch", and keeps us in touch with the old timers. He also examines (in a very entertaining way) some very basic human emotions and reactions, including racism, guilt, compassion, love at first sight, and fear of technology. What would YOU do if your computer suddenly wanted to discuss ethics with you
Mary's Place; if you thought Callahan's was wierd............1997-02-19
Although Callahan's crosstime saloon was vaporized into a sizzling crater, the gang is all back. A new bar is open; called "Mary's Place" in rememberance of Calahan's daughter. The puns, wierdness, and genuine camadarie are just as strong as ever...in addition to an un-lucky duck, a guilty scientist, a walking thirst, a computer that turns itsself on, and a surprise appearance (sic) by an old favorite. Grab an Irish coffee, curl up with this book, and laugh until you cry with those folks we're so fond of

Book Description
How can individuals live a life of forgiveness in a world so full of injustice and indifference? This haunting question spurred author Kent Nerburn to write Calm Surrender. The book looks at the life of an elderly woman mistreated by the healthcare system, a Native American desperate to keep the memories of the old ways alive, a woman singing softly over the grave of her young son. As the author recounts the experiences of people who have suffered much and asked for little, he takes readers on a moving journey.
Customer Reviews:
From another writer.......2005-08-06
Kent Nerburn's wisdom books are like fine brandy. They are for slow sipping from a crystal sniffter, allowing the vintage to warm the soul. Calm Surrender addresses the most critical spiritual need our generation faces in this strange and violent land, the need to forgive and be forgiven. Growing up in a Southern family which still talked about the "late war of Northern aggression," I learned that "forgive" was the real f-word. Yet holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expencting those we resent to die. Nerburn grasps this nettle firmly and leads us gently to a more sane way of approaching the world.

A Good Guide.......2005-07-26
I purchased this book because I needed help shopping and planning my meals. I work FT and I don't have the time or the need to bargain shop. The problem is I can go to the supermarket spend a couple of hundred dollars and not come home with any "food." We get snacks and a little of this and a little of that but I go to make dinner and there is no way that we have food for 3 meals a day for 4 people. This was a good planning book. Since money was not really an issue for us, I purchased slightly higher end items, like fresh whole wheat bread instead of day old white, soy milk instead of regular or kielbasa instead of hot dogs. I clearly ran over the suggested budget in the book but we: 1) spent far less than we normally do, 2) had "food" all week and a much better variety 3) felt more organized about what's for dinner issues.
Regarding saving money, I think I was looking for a magic trick. At the end of the day, it's mostly common sense things like shop at cheap supermarkets and use cupons. For us, how to get your family organized with food was very helpful.
Good for Frugality Newbies.......2005-06-30
This book would be a good first read for people trying to cut down on their grocery bills, but if you've looked at other frugality books (Tightwad Gazette, etc.) you'll find much here that is repeated from other sources. That's not really a criticism of the author: Frugality in the kitchen is largely a matter of common sense, and she has managed to put together a good, basic primer.
The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is that the recipes, which take up half the book, were singularly uninspired. If you have very plain "Midwestern" tastes or picky kids, they might be appealing, but they wouldn't fly at all in this foodie family. Luckily, it's not all that hard to come up with easy recipes for fresh, frugal meals. Any of Jack Bishop's cookbooks will put you on the right track.
Updated Book.......2003-03-08
If you visit the publishers website, you will see that this book, "Feed Your Family for $12 a Day",... is an UPDATED version of her previous book,.."Feed Your Family for $50 a Week". It was not meant to be a NEW book,.. it is an UPDATED version of the previous book. You don't need BOTH books.
One stop shopping for frugal food information!.......2002-12-29
Most frugality-related books contain, at best, one or two chapters on saving money on groceries. Since food is one of the few flexible items in many families' budgets, it makes sense to devote an entire book to this important subject. Although much of the information is repeated from her previous books, there's enough new information to make it a helpful addition to any frugal bookshelf (even if you already own the author's previous books). BUT ... if you don't already own Barfield's other books, you'll want to buy this book right now! Your budget will thank you, your dinner table will thank you, and your family will thank you!
Feed Your Family for 12 a Day.......2002-10-31
This book is a waste of money IF you have purchased her second book--Eat Healthy for 50 a week. It is virtually the same material--page for page all recipes are the same and the only real differences are an update on her family status and four new menus and shopping lists. The "hypothetical family" scenario is word for word the same as in her previous two books as is most of the other info in the other chapters. Save your money--only buy ONE of her books. Either will give you the same info.

Transistor radios, those quintessential '50s and '60s accompaniments for the beach, backyard, and shirt pocket, have become one of the most popular and colorful collectors' items of recent years. Packed with over 460 full color photographs, this book provides an overview of the endless variety of transistor radio types, sizes, and styles produced during the prolific early years of their development. Over 1,000 radios are featured here, from American manufacturers such as Admiral, Bulova, Emerson, Philco, Regency, and Zenith and from Japanese manufacturers such as Hitachi, Koyo, NEC, Realtone, Sony, and Toshiba. Each radio is identified by manufacturer, model number, number of transistors, special features, country of origin, and date. Wherever possible, the sets are grouped to show radios which share common features, such as manufacturer, marketing organization, type of radio, or style. Shown as well are the color variations and cabinet variations which exist for many of the most popular radios. You'll learn which of the manufacturers marketed their sets under different names or to different organizations and which sets, although bearing different names, are virtually identical. A complete value guide is included to help collectors determine the value of various models with similar styling and features.

transistor radios.......2006-02-28
This book is chock full of very very good color pictures of many many transistor radios from the past that many will recall and remember, and some may still have these radios laying around and using them.A pleasing site for the eyes with some general information about these radios accompanying the pictures.
The Transistor Radio Collector's Bible?.......2000-04-21
Mere mention of a radio in this book improves its selling price, and a big color photo--well, phew! Pretty much the pricing Bible, (along with Bunis books) Beautiful photos, a minimum of text, lots of radios. This would be the perfect collector's guide--the one you would want if stranded on an island, except for two things. First, there is no (bleeping) index. I made my own. And, second, since people really swear by this book, they sometimes get stubborn when buying or selling radios if the set's price does not meet, or exceeds the book value. This is not the fault of the author, so don't take it out on him. Times change. eBay is having its way with prices. Roll with it.

Book Description
"It's so expensive to have slipcovers made, yet many people are reluctant to tackle the job on their own. This book successfully dispels the idea that it's too hard and gives such clear instructions....The author takes you through all the steps....the porch swing and the child's tea party chairs....are especially charming."--Creative Crafter.

Good choice.......2002-11-18
I was quite pleased with this book. The author has detailed instructions on how to measure furniture and good color photos of examples. I liked her use of color and ordinary materials verus more traditional hard to work with fabrics. I would have liked more photos and more attention to sofas and sectionals. A lot of time was spend on covering dining chairs which I wasn't as interested in. Overall a good book.

beautiful but a bit complicated projects.......2007-08-21
I like this book, but I don't think it is the best between the "decore-it-yourself" books, because most of the projects are a bit complicated to be done without the help of a good carpenter or painter. Fabric-projects are very original and easy-to-make.

Layout? Just pictures with spare comments.......2003-11-12
The description of this book says 'A graphics design guidebook to the inner workings of great layout design". Decide for yourself if the following representative text (page 86, describing a picture of a tshirt and a menu cover) qualifies:
"A table fork and a tuning fork simpley and humorously convey the food and musical offerings at Greene Street, a SoHo cafe."
A guidebook? Inner workings? No wonder there are no pictures of the interior of the book. Not a single line about how to create good layouts. Some work by well-known designers is the only saving grace. Shame on the publisher (Rockport).
A must-have!.......2000-12-26
My digital photographer instructor loaned me this book. This was my first semester in this field and this book convinced me to add another field to my career. There is not much help on how the pages were done, but anyone with an illustrator or publishing program can duplicate like results. The examples are diverse and inspiring, even for a beginning graphic artist. Since ordering the book, I have taken two more classes in simple graphic layout and this book has been a tremendous help. One thing I learned about graphics is that it is okay to copy other artists' work, unlike in other mediums. So, if you are going to do that, then this book is worth having on hand.
Wonderful Concepts..........2000-03-31
This book has many of them. I found it to be much more helpful to me than Rockport's book on Creativity.
Many, many ideas that can easily be worked into your designs to make them stronger. Also a sense of humor and cleverness are displayed in several of the projects. There are some cool bindery things here, you just never thought of doing, before now.
And you don't have to have a huge design budget to produce some of these kinds of pieces.(Some yes, but several, no).
This book was well worth the modest purchase price!

Book Description
Well-researched and frank, this full biography includes an account of Harrison's rivalries, drug abuse, religious obsession, marital ructions, artistic plagarism and finally his reputation as a talented, charitable, middle-aged musician.
Customer Reviews:
Isn't It a Pity..........2004-05-11
...that this work falls far short of readers' expectations?
In reading this book, one gets the feeling that the author is trying to curry George Harrison's favor. Instead of focussing on the former Beatle's achievements and accomplishments, it appears that this author is criticizing and scorning other artists such as Eric Clapton.
The irony of it all is that Clayson has written a biography that was of extraordinary caliber on George Harrison, the 1/4 of the box set. This work, on the other hand is a real bust.
Effort and Intent rather than Insight and Content.......2002-02-09
The writer can be remarkably annoying as he is self-centered and opinionated about everything and everyone he writes about. Get past that. His facts aren't always right and the book is neither proofed nor edited well. Get past that too. This is an earnest attempt at biography of a subject who did not want to have any more writing done about his public or private life. The writer really tries to get inside Harrison's music and his world. He succeeds at going deeper into Harrison than most any other writer has ever done, however, and that is worth three stars. While lacking the insight and research into Indian sprituality found in Geoffrey Giuliano's Dark Horse (which has other faults that Clayson doesn't stumble into), he really applies himself to Harrison's solo recordings in a way that no other - to my knowledge - critic has done ever. When Harrison died (or disappeared), the lack of true critical review of his solo work (between 1973 and 1987 at least) underscored what Clayson had achieved. Which isn't to say that he does a great job writing about those many years of recordings, but he does give them an objective, honest and careful listen, putting them into the perspective of his full musical career.
take it to the shredder !!.......2001-11-30
Get your facts right, Mr. Biographer. Ravi Shankar is an INDIAN legend and sitar virtuouso; and not Bangladeshi as the author seems to believe (he notes this again in his brief interview with BBC, upon George Harrison's passing).
Makes you wonder how much else is accurate in the book !

An amateurish attempt to curry Harrison's favor........1997-04-25
Rife with personal bias and the author's "opinions" on Harrison's life and work, as well as other subjects on which the author sees fit to comment, this bio is badly written, bears no touch of an editor's hand, and was not even proofread adequately. Conjecture replaces fact, and much of the book reads like a summation of previously-published articles and books. No new revelations are presented, and important facts and events in Harrison's life are given short shrift or omitted entirely. The few quotes from Harrison's intimates are old, such as statements Pattie Boyd made in the late 70s. Clayon also makes bare statements without any evidence, such as Harrison's having had a "drug addiction", which Clayson never supports with any facts or evidence. This is typical of this sloppy, amateurish mess. Chronology appears to not be Clayson's strong point, either. Worst of all is Clayson's bald statement, at the end of the book, that he simply doesn't like or respect certain [unnamed] persons in music -- and therefore either doesn't write about them or does so as briefly as possible. Eric Clapton thus rates a few paragraphs in this book, despite having been Harrison's friend for thirty years, and having played significant roles in Harrison's personal and professional life. Clapton, whom Clayson states is "overrated", is dismissed in a few sentences. Others only have their names mentioned once or twice. But musicians whom Clayson deems "worthy of respect" are mentioned time and again at length. This sort of naked bias is inappropriate in an allegedly objective look at Harrison's life and work. Clayson's opinions are unsound, his research absent, his writing laughable. While he posits himself as a music insider, in truth he appears to be someone desperately TRYING to be an insider, and attempting to use this book to gain Harrison's approval and respect. Bad form
