Book Description
Available again, a newly translated collection of twenty-three stories from one of the most influential figures in modern Japanese literature.
Yasunari Kawabata is widely known for his innovative short stories, some called "palm-of-the-hand" stories short enough to fit into ones palm. This collection reflects Kawabata's keen perception, deceptive simplicity, and the deep melancholy that characterizes much of his work. The stories were written between 1923 and 1929, and many feature autobiographical events and themes that reflect the painful losses he experienced early in his life.
Customer Reviews:
A lonely view of love.......2005-05-10
This is an interesting mix of Yasunari Kawabata's early work, well before he was Japan's literary superstar, and well before the works that would ultimately win him the Nobel prize. The title story (I can't say titular, can I?) is of a college student's crush on the youngest member of a dancing troup. Most likely autobiographical, it leaves the reader sharing Kawabata's youthful loneliness. The second larger short story (there's no better way to describe it) is Diary of My Sixteenth Year, which covers the disappating love of a youth and his dying grandfather.
The remaining stories are much shorter, ranging from 3 to 10 pages each. Birthplace is an interesting story of abandonment and leaving one's home behind. Burning the Pine Boughs is as much about reading between the lines as reading what's on the page. Oil is a deep work of overcoming childhood loss.
Three common themes permeate these stories. First is the idea of an imperfect, sour or unatainable love. Second is the idea that at least somehow many of them are autobiographical. Third is that much is left unsaid in the stories. In a sense they are a prose form of Zen art, where what is unsaid can be more important than what is put to paper. Despite being distinct, one can read inferences between the stories (the hands for prayer in both Master of Funerals and Hands, for example) and perhaps that is enough to tie them all together.
Although Snow Country is commonly referred to as Kawabata's greatest accomplishment, these stories were more accessible and emotionally powerful.
Innocence and love, age and death, riddles with no meaning.......2004-04-07
"The Dancing Girl of Izu and Other Stories" is an odd collection of sorts, mixing an elegant, straight-forward short story together with some autobiography and a fluttering of palm-of-the-hand tales. Each element contributes a unique flavor, and a different facet of Kawabata's style.
J. Martin Holman proves himself again a master translator of Kawabata, retaining the flow and most importantly the feeling of the originals, far more than other translators I have read. The only flaw I found was that he splits the book into two sections, which I personally found a bit jarring. I think it more naturally flows into three distinct chapters.
"The Dancing Girl of Izu" is as fine a short story as you are likely to read anywhere. Every necessary element is contained, with no superfluous decoration. It is heartbreaking in its subtlety, and masterful in its craft. Everything important is unsaid. Kawabata can manipulate emotions so deeply using so little, leaving the reader with an aching emptiness as great as that of the narrator. Beautiful, and fully worth the cost of the collection alone.
"Diary of my Sixteenth Year," "Oil," "The Master of Funerals" and "Gathering Ashes" are four short autobiographical sketches of Kawabata's relationship with his only relative, a blind grandfather who would figure into several tales. Not factual per se, but true impressions. They present an intimate portrait of youth trying to understand the aged, of responsibility and resentment of responsibility, and of the numbness of death. The stories are presented as recovered diary accounts Kawabata wrote when he was 16, and they may be so. I believe the feelings, and that is enough.
The third section contains the 18 remaining unpublished palm-of-the-hand stories, Kawabata's personal trademark and contribution to literature. A page or three at the most, each story functions like a Zen koan, a story or riddle with no obvious meaning used as a contemplation tool by meditating monks to clear their minds and make them go hmmm...as they try to decipher. Koans have been called "extremely brief vignettes enabling the individual to hold entire universes of thought in mind all at once," and I think this sums it up nicely. Do not attempt to decipher these palm-of-the-hand stories, but instead read them and feel them and go hmm...
brief glimpses.......2002-12-21
I recently read this collection of short (with the emphasis on "short") stories. This set of stories are very autobiographical; especially in the first part. The title story is a tale of young love. The message that came through to me was the innocence of the attraction of the two main characters. After that came a touching diary that told of the relationship of a teenage boy and the elderly, invalid grandfather who raised him. It reminded me of my relationship with my own grandfather. The other sketches were worth reading as well and most were only two or three short pages in length. There is certainly a poetic style in Kawabata's works. This particular collection is a good introduction to the writer.
Kawabata at his best.......2001-12-24
Although Kawabata is most often associated with his better than good Palm-of-the-hand stories, I don't view them as my favorate Kawabata work. The Dancing Girl of Izu (mandatory reading for Japanese Junior High School Students) is a sort of coming of age story that made me step back and reflect. The semi-autobiographical work is tender, heart warming, and a keen glimpse into Japanese life. If you have read and enjoyed earlier works of this author I would strongly suggest this collection to you. If you have yet to discover Kawabata, I say there's no better place to start!
Enchanting with clear mind.......2001-01-04
It's not the writing smooth as flowing water and traveling cloud, nor the superfluous decoration of the wordings and twisted story plots that hint the merit of Kawabata's `Dancing girl of Izu'. It's the revealing of the culture the author experienced and the style he chose to present those incidents that were intriguing as the first time tasting of an exotic fruit. Of course, Kawabata is the master of imagination and creativity as well, so that the plain telling of such a story could be as surreal as a fairy tale with princess and the prince on a white horse, yet churning and touching deep down one's heart, no need for the reader to pretend to be a child. This collection of short stories were as delicate as short stories can go, different from poems, yet flows like chiming, even, dare I say, the sad family history of the author when he was a kid wasn't upsetting, rather enchanting and appealing. Only, I say only, that the writing of this plain and honest, though whole heartedly, could be sometimes like a dragging of a story. One appreciates it highly when peaceful and clear-minded, not for long otherwise.

Sophia Nash breathes life into her characters........2005-05-05
Set in 1814. Lord Nicholas Huntington returns home wounded from the war in hopes of seeing his father who is near death. His father continues to live thanks to Dr. Kittridge, the most talented physician in all of Europe. As the good doctor cares for his father, the doctor's daughter takes care of Lord Nick. All Lord Nick wishes to do is return to the war and leave everything else to his half brother, Lord Edwin. Dealing with his stepmother and Edwin is just more than Nick can seem to stomach.
Miss Charlotte Kittridge is proud to be her father's nurse. She knows she is not pretty and accepts that she is long past her prime. She wants only to learn from her father and help care for his patients. When Lord Nicholas arrives unconscious and then slightly delirious, she jumps into her nurse role, even against her patient's wishes. Charlotte is attracted to the man, but keeps her distance and treats him like any other patient. She and her father are kept busy tending the two lords. Yet Fate gives them an added burden anyway. Charlotte's cousin, "Alexandre" Lord Gaston, arrives in all his flirting glory.
Lord Nicholas finds his eyes searching out Miss Charlotte far too often. Her delicate touch and intelligent mind keeps him fascinated. Even though he is drawn to the lady, he must keep his distance. He promised his father that he would never marry. Yet seeing Alexandre vie for Charlotte's passion is just too much for him to handle.
***** Once again author Sophia Nash entices readers to lose themselves within her latest regency novel. And once again I find myself extremely glad that I did. There is much more going on than I am able to reveal without spoilers and quite a few more characters, each with their own unique personality. The people are so believable that I feel as though I actually know them. Sophia Nash breathes life into her characters in a way so few authors can. Highly recommended reading. *****

A welcome new author.......2004-10-11
Here goes - some thoughts - not a review as others have already presented very comprehensive outlines of the story. Although I would not rate "A Passionate Endeavor" as a keeper, I do welcome a talented writer to the Regency genre. The best thing about this novel was the great imagination of the author in introducing the topic of dyslexia whilst keeping it set within the timeframe of the novel. In otherwords, although there was a breakthrough for the hero, it was sensitively handled and seemed realistic.
The main criticism I have here is the introduction of a sort of "counter hero", Alexandre, Viscount Gaston. I was very confused about this character - was he a hero or villain? I also felt that Charlotte's childhood experiences were not fully exploited. And, there was a point in the last quarter of the novel where I felt the author was tiring and in some danger of losing the plot line.
Some of the characters, such as the two dowager Duchesses, were badly overwrought. The author gets the name of the 95th Regiment of Rifles wrongly named, over and over. I was surprised by this as it was something to get easily correct!
On the plus points, I was most impressed overall by the sensitive handling of the handicap of illiteracy and the ramifications in terms of self-esteem on a very kind and generous man who deserved the love and encouragement of his family. The 30 year old Lord Huntington's inability to read had coloured the whole of his life, the way others viewed him and, in the end, had made him ready to step back from his destined role in life. Very sad. How lovely that the love of an equally kind woman enabled him to find his true life's path.
For a second novel, this was very good although it did not quite reach the excitement I felt on first reading Anne Gracie's debut and follow up novels. I look forward to seeing what Sophia Nash produces next!
This is a Sweetheart of a Read!.......2004-09-27
Setting - Wiltshire, England 1814 --- Hanging on for all he was worth, Nicholas Huntington traveled home to see his ailing father, praying that he only stay conscious from the injuries he'd received in the war long enough to get there. Prayers answered, arriving home, he then promptly blacked out. The next thing he saw, and felt, were gentle hands exploring his body that were attached to what appeared to be a very young girl with huge gray eyes.
Plain Charlotte Kittridge, because of her tiny form appeared much younger, but at seven and twenty resolved herself to be firmly on the shelf, until this very handsome soldier, son of the ailing duke, stirred up feelings she'd long thought were dead and buried. Being the daughter of the most talented and esteemed physician in Europe, she had dedicated herself to being his nurse and helpmate, but now, with her sensually reawakened, she couldn't help dreaming of a different life that included Nicolas. Later discovering that Nicolas had made a vow to never marry, she savored the one kiss he'd given her when he came out of a delirious fever. When he confessed a shameful secret to her, she insinuated herself into his life determined to help him overcome his greatest shame. Later when he proposed a marriage in name only, with the stipulation of a one night consummation to make it legal, she realized that while she really only wanted Nicolas' love, she'd agree to anything for the one chance to love him for real, and maybe, just maybe, he might want more.
In this very lovely romance, this newer author reveals some superb characterizations of people dealing with serious (dyslexia) issues as well as gently inserting some very nice sensuality that is generally not found in the traditional short regency novel. The numerous secondary characters were delightful and I particularly enjoyed the two older (80ish) dowagers vying for the cleric's attention! Not only was I impressed with her debut A SECRET PASSION but also have truly enjoyed this entry showing an author who does her research as well as coming up with an original storyline. Bottom Line - This is a warm, romantically sensual sweetheart of a read - I loved it! ---- Marilyn Rondeau, for www.historicromancewriters.com ---
Pull out your hanky--for wiping your brow & dabbing tears.......2004-09-03
What a delightful treat! I found a regency with the depth and emotional power of a larger novel.
I was really surprised because shorter regency books rarely have the length needed to involve me so fully that I really care about the people in it. Especially not enough to profoundly touch me. This one did (OK, I cried. I admit it!)
I was also pleasantly surprised by the heat of this story. Again, this is something I haven't seen in many regencies but I really enjoyed it.
I recommend this book with five stars. This regency is a stand out.
In My Opinon:.......2004-08-26
I tend to base my reviews on whether I feel, after reading, that I'll want to read a book again & again -- in other words, that it's a keeper. And even tho' this book is well-written, and I can't find any fault in the characterizations or the plot (tho' the heroine was just SO sweet & good, & I did feel the plot dragged on a bit), it's just not good enough to rate "keeper" status.
I think the 3 star rating is a fair one, considering that the book just didn't take off for me; that's not to say it might not do that for you. Everyone has their own criteria for "keepers" or "re-reads" or whatever you want to call them...but this wasn't one for me. A pleasant & well-written read, but not a great one.

Damn fine.......2006-06-16
As always, Loren Coleman brings us back to the things that matter in this universe. This one picks up directly after Sword of Sedition (the ending of which left us thirsting for more) and successfully advances the metaplot (or macroplot?) of the BattleTech universe by detailing startling new developments in the Republic and the Federated Suns. In addition, he's weaving the threads that tie the Dark Age back to the original series (in case you thought they forgot about that time period). Coleman's prose is crisp and always exciting. The ending, once again, leaves us in agony, but I fear we'll have to wait another year to see how this one resolves.
Depth and detail. An excellent book!.......2006-01-04
I refuse to go into detail and spoil any of this book for you, but I am on my second read, and it is excellent reading, even as it was the first time. A book that draws you into the grand schemes and petty details of the Inner Sphere even further, an excellent link in the series, providing a delicious mix of intrique, character and action.
As varied, dense and full of different flavors as a three-inch-deep pizza!

Reprint too small.......2007-08-28
The original book was wider than the average book. When they did the softback reprint they had to reduce the print to fit the more narrow format. This not only left considerable white space above and below the text, but the text, especially in the charts, is entirely too small to read, some even with a magnifying glass.
I returned the book, but Amazon gave a full refund, even the postage one way.
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-04-07
This item is worth it's weight in gold. A wealth of information to strengthen your faith and witness. A must have for any true bible believer. The use of charts & diagrams help with visualizing the finer details often overlooked when studying God's word. If you haven't added this great book to your library, what are you waiting for!
Comprehensive study of the dispensations.......2006-08-20
Easy to study and is accurate according to the Holy Scriptures.A must have for serious Bible students.
Please read this book, great companion to the Bible!!.......2003-06-08
Don't know where to start when reviewing this incredible book. Rev Larkin gives so many wonderful insights to so many different subjects. It is beyond obvious that he has put years upon years of study into the Bible, and it shows through in this book!! The teaching on the Great Pyramid is absolutely incredible, and his study of prophecy (timelines, events, ect.) are astounding. He does what few can do, by letting the Bible interperet itself using scripture with scripture. A definete must have for any one serious about Bible study!!
Great insight backed by 30 years of study.......2003-01-06
Larkin's book on dispensational truth is insightful and deep (truly "meat" versus "milk"). He presents each step or topic in a clear and simple fashion and then provides numerous scriptures every step of the way. His incredibly detailed drawings are works of art in an of themselves. If you're serious, and want more than just someones opinion, then this book will give you what your seek.

Helpful for Parents and Teachers.......2001-02-24
This is an excellent book for Childcare Providers and parents. The book includes helpful information on child development and nutritional needs, educational and community resources on child nutrition as well as information on cooking for medium sized groups of children in the childcare setting. It's a helpful resource for the teacher, the parent asked to run the 'cooking corner' in the weekly programme as well as the parent at home. Meals can easily be adjusted to a family sized group (although 6 preschoolers eat about the same amount as a family of two adults and two children). It's also helpful in educating parents as to what they should expect from their child's school meal programme.
Its companion book, 'Teaching Children About Food' has great ideas for educating kids about food, cultural diversity, consumerism and where food comes from. It's also an excellent resource for the parent wishing to enrich the home kitchen as well as the teacher.
INSTITUTIONAL; NOT TOO HELPFUL FOR PARENTS.......2000-06-05
I guess the title should have warned me: CHILDCARE feeding guide. This book is not for parents trying to feed their own kids healthy meals; it is geared toward a daycare setting. Most of the book centers on the logistics of meal preparation (e.g. sanitary food-handling) and common sense dietary information (eat lots of vegetables!). The few recipes that are included don't sound very appealing, plus they feed 8-12 children. If I were a daycare provider I might have given this book 5 stars, but it's not very helpful for a family.

Great Book.......2003-04-14
This book was well worth buying! Had the patterns I was interested, plus more, I've even started new collections from patterns I saw in this book. Great pictures, too. The Kovels did it again!
Incomplete, not recommended especially the beginner.......2001-03-23
This was the first reference book I purchased when I began collecting depression glass. Although there are color photos, few patterns are represented. The patterns of manufacturers are line listed at the end of the depression glass section but quite a few of the patterns are not represented in the detail (the most important) section of the book. Representation of the patterns detailed are in a very poor quality black and white, making it difficult to match a piece of glassware with the pattern. Although Kovel seems to be a well respected authority in a number of collectible arenas, I saw no sign of expertise in this book. I would not recommend this book to anyone especially beginners.

Super pictures to help identify types of glass, with good history of each. Exciting to see the actual worth of items. Perfect size book (not bulky) to take with you when exploring the antique stores. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
This book taps into two powerful trends in American culture: a national passion for home décor and remodeling, and a growing interest in the ancient Chinese art of feng shui. In Feng Shui Before & After Stephen Skinner has written a comprehensive, practical, hands-on guide to using feng shui to make redecorating choices in any room in a house, from the kitchen to a nursery. The founder of the internationally popular magazine, Feng Shui for Modern Living, Skinner shows how rearranging furniture, a mirror, changing colors, or even hanging a wind chime can restore harmony and maximize the flow of "ch'i", or good energy, to a room. Feng Shui Before & After also explores the feng shui concepts of the "magic square," the ability to discover which sectors of a house relate best to specific areas of a homeowner's life, and the most and least fortunate directions in a room. A perfect balance between a Western demand for reinvention and a timeless Eastern art, this is an essential book for anyone searching for harmony within the walls of his or her own home.

I have this book, and at the time of its publication was very timely in its documentary of the Princesses' dress. Of course, since its publication, Princess Diana's fashion look changed even more. However, for great color photos and wonderful reminders of the Princess, it makes for great memoriabilia.

Customer Reviews:
While somewhat dated, this bio still provides good insight.......2002-08-05
There is little doubt that this book is not a comprehensive account of the life of Charles, the Prince of Wales as its contents had to meet the approval of certain people, but one should not go so far as to pass it off as being total ... Were this the case, then it is clear that some of Charles' perceived short-comings would have been glossed over; but instead, we do get a fair sense about the man who will be the future King of England. He is by no means a gregarious, powerful figure, and, unfortunately and quite unjustly, he has been criticized for this, and some, including his now deceased ex-wife, have gone so far as to suggest that he is not suited for the job. Unfortunately, the people suggesting such things have succeeded in instilling some doubt in the minds of the British people as to whether this is in fact the case, but it is quite evident from what I have read that this is complete ... Granted, Charles does not fit the bill of the warrior king, but there is no doubt that he is a sensitive, well-educated and benevolent person who will undoubtably be well suited for the role of King in this current day and age. One thing that struck me as notable about Charles is his passion for certain causes and ideals, including organic farming and architecture. His opinions on these subjects has raised a few eyebrows and no doubt gave his detractors some fuel for their arguments. But his opinions on these, and other issues, are quite sound and indicate that he is a man well versed in modern issues and could prove to be a quite progressive monarch. Unfortunately, many are blinded to this aspect of the man by a superficial devotion to his deceased ex-wife, whose unfortunate behaviour during the latter years of their relationship succeeded in fooling many people.
