Book Description

Hugo Whittier–failed poet and former kept man–is a wily misanthrope with a taste for whiskey, women, and his own cooking. Afflicted with a rare disease that will be fatal unless he quits smoking, Hugo retreats to his once aristocratic family’s dilapidated mansion, determined to smoke himself to death without forfeiting any of his pleasures. To his chagrin, the world that he has forsaken is not quite finished with him. First, his sanctimonious older brother moves in, closely followed by his estranged wife, their alleged daughter, and his gay uncle. Infuriated at the violation of his sanctum, Hugo devises hilariously perverse ploys to send the intruders packing. Yet the unexpected consequences of his schemes keep forcing him to reconsider, however fleetingly, the more wholesome ingredients of love, and life itself.

4 out of 5 stars the smoker's lament.......2006-11-01

This book is funny, charming, and very well written. It's a pleasure to be inside the head of her wonderfully misanthropic narrator - the most sociable hermit I've ever come across. Christensen is even good at funny sex scenes. But I didn't quite buy the epicure part of the book-- the cooking doesn't play into the plot nearly as well as the smoking and the recipes are kind of backwoods for a post 9/11 gourmet. The author also is compelled to soften all her funny dark humor toward the end too much. But, all in all, an extremely enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars The Epicure's Boredom.......2006-09-15

The central facts of the epicurean trajectory, that it is a series of leapfrogging escalations of pleasure that end always in boredom and disgust and that its justifications are propped up with the romantic scaffolding of the gallows, is so thoroughly avoided and then subverted in this book as to cause a crisis in incredulity: Why, I find myself asking over and over, doesn't our hero put a bullet in his head and finish it? If his beloved cigarettes give him one minor zing first draw in the morning and taste of ash the rest of the day, why bother except that quitting takes work? If the whisky bottle provides only solitary dullness instead of social buzz, what then? And, as Kate Christensen insists in endless numbers of paragraphs, if even sunsets and trees and views of a river changing in the light can't provide pleasure without each brief meditation on them ending in jarring sarcastic subversions, the genre-necessitated introductions of little black details that startle us from our reveries, why not overdose and be done with it? How can such cynicism and self-hatred, the kind constructed for literary affect and never, in my experience, witnessed in real people, hold the attention of a reflective reader?

I mean, really. Look at Hugo's back-story: the romantic childhood of suicidal father and withering [s]mother, the old money, the spurned yankee propriety. Look at the oh-so-dramatic pas-de-deux of Hugo and his worshipped/resented big brother. Look at the sexy trouble Hugo gets into in school, followed by his absurdly cliched tramping in Europe. He was even a kept boy and flaneur in Paris! What is all this except romantic doodling around the edges of what is essentially a tale of boredom, muddy thinking, and protracted suicide? I came to this book looking for something bracingly real, and what I find is a thinly-constructed stageset, mostly smoke and transparent associations, with all the existential crisis of waiting in line at the DMV.

The text is occassionally leavened by sardonic humor and by good deadpan observation, so I've awarded the book a few arbitrary stars. But even that feels generous. I am left with the overwhelming impression not of wit but of literary posing. My mental picture of the author is of a black-clad, dull-eyed poseuse, cigarette in languid white hand, practicing her impassive face, burning inside for critical recognition. The picture feels plausible because of that burning hope. Without it, no book. Without it, pathetic Hugo was a boring corpse long ago.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2006-03-12

This is a nicely-written, fun, easy read. Author is intelligent & has a great sense of humor!

4 out of 5 stars Yum.......2005-12-26

As far as story goes, this one's lacking. This is not the most compelling book I've ever read. It is, however, one of the best-written character studies I've read.
I loved Hugo Whittier, despite his horribleness. He has a lot of unappealing characterstics. He's a drunk, a womanizer, and a deadbeat. But he's also a brilliant writer, and a highly intelligent cynic.
As far as language goes, this book has it all. Beautiful prose, biting sarcasm and cynicism, sick humor, and obscenity. I burst out laughing at some one-liners every now and then while reading this book.
All in all, you're not supposed to love Hugo as a person, but you can't help but love him as a character.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoy this book each time I read it, highly recommended.......2005-06-01

The Epicure's Lament by Kate Christensen is a character study of a wealthy, vituperative ne'er-do-well - Hugo Whittier - who is slowly smoking himself to death while holed up in family's ancient, crumbling estate. Hugo's solitude is shattered when his brother, Hugo's estranged wife and child, and his aging gay uncle come to live with him.

Christensen has done a superb job getting inside the head of this utterly disgusting yet annoyingly compelling main character. Hugo is manipulative, nasty, selfish, and scathingly witty. Perhaps what keeps us drawn to him rather than utterly repelled is the hint of a moral compass which becomes just a little bit more visible towards the end of the book. Of course, Hugo's way of acting out his moral compass is to attempt to hire a hit man on his lover's husband whom Hugo has been led to believe has pedophiliac thoughts.

I couldn't help but be reminded of Ignatius Reilly, the hero of John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces, while reading The Epicure's Lament. Yet, unlike the delusional Reilly, Hugo is less delusional and more misanthropic, and therefore less comedic.

What saves this book are Hugo's deliciously scathing rants and esoteric references to philosophy, history, and culture. Hugo stands out from the other characters who are just too unidimensional to be interesting. I did enjoy his daughter's character, Bellatrix, who pegs her dad early on and manages to hold her center even as he ignores her or speaks to her of things which adults should simply not mention to children.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

When pirates overrun his paddleboat and his new bride Lierin is tossed into the dangerous river, Ashton Wingate is sure he has lost her forever. Three years later, Ashton's carriage collides with a rider, and he is certain that the unconscious beauty is his lost wife. But when the woman revives, she remembers nothing but faint memories of a dark and murderous night, and feels only trepidation in the arms of her so-called husband.

Willing to remain with him until she recovers, Lierin soon finds generous comfort in Ashton's care. Though her memories remain elusive, she and Ashton forge a relationship of deep passion and love. Then Malcolm Sinclair arrives and claims that Lierin is actually his wife Lenore, Lierin's twin sister. Lierin must admit that she has memories of Malcolm, though Ashton vows to never lose her again. Tensions flare between the men, and the growing danger seems frighteningly familiar to her. Will Lierin and Ashton be able to uncover the secrets of the past in time to secure a future together?

First published in 1983, Come Love a Stranger has remained a favorite among Woodiwiss fans for good reasons. Set in the South in the 1830s and dappled with well-formed characters, this book is fresh and entertaining on every page. Touches such as a burning madhouse, a melodramatic ex-girlfriend, and a deliciously malevolent villain make for a great read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars but there's more to the story...........2006-11-18

I really enjoyed aspects of this book, as I do all of Kathleen Woodiwiss (at least ones I have read thus far and that is about 6 of them) but I felt there were some missed opportunities here to make a good book a great book. Believe me, I am a big KW fan, but this book seemed rushed and slow at the same time if that is possible! The resolution at the end was a little too neat and sort of confused me. And, what annoys me about KW at times is that lots and LOTS of peripheral characters are introduced and flutter in and out of the story like hummingbirds. Why bother? Bitchy Marelda could have been a GREAT villainess but she is painfully underused and frankly was the only interesting character in the beginning which moves too slow. Then she leaves and comes back intermittently and that is too bad. I wish KW would write a book about Marelda! What fun that would be! The hero and heroine here are, as always, incredibly beautiful and we have to hear about that constantly, but I felt like their chemistry was like walking into a movie that had already started at times. KW can create an atmosphere full of suspense and adventure that I love and once you get into this book, you won't be able to put it down Not disappointing by any means but this could have been much sharper than as it stands.

1 out of 5 stars I didn't like this book.......2006-01-23

This is the second Kathleen Woodiwess I've read that I didn't like because I couldn't get into the story. The whole amnesia confused identity thing dragged on far too long as far as I was concerned by the end I didn't care if she was Lierin or Lenore.I just wanted her to remember so they could move on with their lives. The story was way too long.I liked all her other books except Ashes in the wind. This one was not well written.

4 out of 5 stars The ending needs rewriting.......2005-06-15

Ashton Wingate is a wealthy plantation owner in Mississippi. With his good looks and fortune, he had his choice of women but none was able to capture his heart like Lierin. He knew that he had met the woman of his dreams and so married her after a very brief courtship. On their honeymoon aboard one of Ashton's boats, the River Witch, with the ink on their marriage papers barely dry, they were attacked by river pirates and his wife of merely a few days was thrown overboard never to be seen again, leaving Ashton a widower.

Fast forward to three years and we see Ashton in a carriage on his way home to Belle Chene. Deep in thoughts, he is startled by the sound of a woman's scream. Thrown off her horse, Ashton immediately jumps out to her rescue and takes the unconscious woman to the safety of his home. But when moonlight frames her face, he is shocked for right in his very arms is the face of the woman who has haunted his dreams for the last three years - his beloved wife Lierin. Unfortunately, the woman wakes up with no memory whatsoever of her past or identity. But in his heart, Ashton knows that she is Lierin. And when fate once again threatens to tear them apart when Malcolm Sinclair turns up and claim her as his abducted wife Lenore, Ashton vows to fight for her no matter what.

What follows is a series of confusion and heartbreak for Ashton and Lierin. Although Ashton's heart tells him that the woman is his dear wife, mounting evidence seem to prove that the woman is indeed Lenore, Lierin's twin sister. For her, as much as it pains her to leave the kind and gentle stranger who has managed to convince her that she is Lierin and whom she has fallen in love with, she knows that she must uncover the truth about herself and whom she's really married to. Sadly, things seem to favor Malcolm's side of the story, especially when the man who claims to be her own father refutes Ashton's claims.

COME LOVE A STRANGER is an exciting story filled with deceit and mystery. As usual, Kathleen Woodiwiss shows her flare for storytelling with her vivid descriptions of each scenes and portrayal of her characters. I absolutely loved Ashton! His tenderness towards Lierin, his patience and undying devotion is simply adorable. I enjoyed their playfulness toward each other and those scenes made me smile. And when Lierin was taken away from him again, I really felt his grief and couldn't wait for the truth to come out. But personally, if I were the heroine, I would have gone back to Ashton immediately after seeing him come out of the sea wearing nothing but that loincloth!

What's good about this is the mystery. It is well-plotted and I actually found myself confused and unable to figure out whether the woman is actually Lierin or Lenore, adding further to the suspense. My biggest gripe though is the ending. I closed the book rather dissatisfied, feeling as if the author has reached her word count and therefore decided to rush the ending. Overall, I thought that this book was good.

3 out of 5 stars There's something missing.......2004-11-09

I typically enjoy Woodiwiss novels but this one left me with a big question mark in my mind. The beginning of the book dragged on while the end came up so quickly that I felt like I must have missed something.

And there was some logic missing in the plot. She has no memory of who she is, yet she goes with two complete strangers, leaving behind the man she has come to love and "trust" over recent weeks. She claims she's trying to find out who she is, but willingly takes up residence with those two strangers, and assumes the name of her sister.

This story isn't one of Kathleen Woodiwiss' best.

4 out of 5 stars Very slow beginning but well worth it..........2004-06-30

At first I didn't think I would ever get into the book but after a long, slow wait I finally did & then I couldn't put the book down. To be honest it was about 150 pages before I was so into it that I hated to shut the book. The beginning was just very slow & kinda boring but I'm glad I didn't give up on it. I was truly confused as to who the woman was & I usually solve things pretty quickly but not the case with this book. The author gave just the right amount of clues to keep you guessing until the very end. I felt so giddy for her & Ashton when they found times to be together. It seemed to me that they were young lovers who were trying to be held apart by just about everybody but they weren't going to let anything or anybody stand in their way. It was so much fun for me to see their playful love for one another & to watch her find her identity. You just gotta love this book.

Just then the Emperor needed to pacify the Wolf Worlds, the planets of an insignificant cluster that had raised space piracy to a low art.

And Mantis Team could use all the men it needed -- as long as it needed no more than two.

                5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........1999-02-07

This is the second "Sten" Book I read, ("Fleet of the Damned" being first), and I thouroughly enjoyed it. Sten, Alex, and the rest of Mantis Team 13 show off their stuff in the Lupus Cluster. Read it, you'll like it. If not, we'll have you brainscaned!

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Joe Chronicle.......2003-08-28

All other books about GI Joe take note: You have just been left in the dust. Michlig's authoritative and highly readable GI Joe: The Complete Story of America's Favorite Man of Action is the best single source of information about the origin of GI Joe that exists. Colorful anecdotes illuminate this exhaustively informative, definitive work about America's Movable Fighting Man. It belongs on the bookshelves of everyone interested in the history of playthings.

Full of great insider info and eye watering photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Joe history.......2002-03-15

Excellent review of the life and times of America's Moveable Fighting Man. Especially interesting are the details of the conception and behind-the-scenes work in creating the prototype figure and marketing concept, an aspect of the story that may interest even non-Joe devotees. Collectors may wish to note that this is a much-expanded (and therefore more essential) version of the slender book included with the G. I. Joe Masterpiece Edition boxed figure.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched and a tale well told.......2001-11-22

Don't confuse this book with the "GI Joe collector's guides" that exist in various forms. This is a different animal - - gripping, well-written nonfiction, telling the story of a small family-owned business and its leap of faith on a brand new type of toy for boys, the now-ubiquitous "action figure."

The story of the GI Joe product illuminates the story of the toy industry itself. I found this look inside the process of bringing a product to market and maintaining its value over the course of decades fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars What great fun!!.......2001-05-01

I don't normally give a Five Star rating, but my god, this book is wonderful. The story is fun and indepth. The design is AMAZING and the images of the GI JOE figures are wonderfully shot.

If you have even a slight, passing interest in GI JOE, buy this book, you won't be dissappointed!

                          Book Description

Brown Eyed Handsome Man: The Life and Hard Times of Chuck Berry draws on dozens of interviews done by the author himself and voluminous public records to paint a complete picture of this complicated figure. This biography uncovers the real Berry and provides us with a stirring, unvarnished portrait of both the man and the artist.

Berry has long been one of pop music's most enigmatic personalities. Growing up in a middle-class, black neighborhood in St. Louis, his first major hit song, "Maybellene," was an adaptation of a white country song, wedded to a black-influenced beat. Thereafter came a string of brilliant songs celebrating teenage life in the '50s, including "School Day," "Johnny B. Goode," and "Sweet Little Sixteen." Berry's career rise was meteoric; but his fall came equally quickly, when his relations with an underage girl led to his conviction. It was not his first (nor his last) run in with the law. He scored his biggest hit in the early '70s with the comical (and some would saydecidedly lightweight) song "My Ding-a-Ling." The following decades brought hundreds of nights of tours, with little attention from the recording industry.

Bruce Pegg offers the definitive, though not always pretty, portrait of one of the greatest stars of rock and roll, a story that will appeal to all fans of American popular music.

5 out of 5 stars Hail, Hail, Chuck Berry!.......2004-09-14

I've been reading this book for the last few months (it's been my reading material on the train on the weekends hehe) and it's been an enertaining read of the life and hard times of Chuck Berry.
Previous to reading this book, I had only heard Chuck Berry's music and loved it, but did not know much about the man himself.
Bruce Pegg has done a good job of detailing Chuck's life, from the early days in The Ville, his begginings in music, Racism in the USA in the 50's, Chuck's relationship with Chess Records, concerts, all his court appearances (the Mann Act Trial, the Southern Aire Restuarant Video Tape Scandal (which I first heard about on E! News!) plus much more.
There are some great photos in the book which i'm not sure have been seen before.
Pegg also has also rounded up all the important people in Chuck's life and they all give interesting comments.
I haven't read Chuck Berry's offical Autobiography, but upon reading this, i'm sure this gives a much better view into his life.

5 out of 5 stars Can't put this book down!.......2004-02-26

As a long time fan of Chuck Berry, I have tried to read everything I could find about him, from enclyclopedia's to Rolling Stone Magazine. Over the past 20 years, I have tried to piece together the various differing messages about him, from musical genius to "difficult to work with" entertainer. This book puts it all together in an extremely well written and well documented manner. Pegg ties together all of the pieces with a lot of information and insight otherwise unknown, with interviews of principle persons in Chuck's musical and professional life. He is obviously a fan of Chuck's, but the book is very honest with the facts and never sensational.

If you are a fan of Chuck Berry, please do yourself a favor and get this book. You will not be able to stop reading it! I think it also would be helpful for anyone interested in the social/historical milieu of this time period in relationship to black entertainers in general as well.

Great Book. Very informative. A thorough body of research was completed in order to have this book published. I thought I knew all about Chuck Berry until I read this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Chuck's. The book is balanced and pulls no punches. No wonder the biography is unauthorized. It contains information that is both provoctive and endearing.
