Book Description

Stationed at a U.S. Air Force base in Norfolk, Englandin 1952, a group of "Yankee wives" are thrown together by nothing more than husbands who patrol the skies keeping the Soviets at bay. They seem to have little in common; some, like Pie Crust Queen Betty Gillis, are content to clip coupons and bake chocolate brownies, while others, like good-time girl Lois Moon, look for a little excitement beyond the perimeter fence. But the women soon discover similarities, from a common fear for their husbands to a desire to help out the war-ravaged British natives. Through marriage and divorce, separations and reunions, the gang will try to hold fast to each other in a story that takes us to the heart of female friendship-and reveals the secret of the perfect Three Color Refrigerator Cake.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been very good.......2007-04-04

A decent story about several American women and their individual and connected lives starting on a military base in England and thereafter. However, the book was severely hampered by the British author's portrayal of several Americans as ill-spoken, barely educable dolts. Also, some poor editing and the author's lack of research was jarring. For instance, she has a character in early 1960's USA who has Hubba Bubba bubble gum - a product not introduced in the USA until the 1970's.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reading For Gals AND Guys, Too!.......2007-03-14

I totally enjoyed this book! I recommend it wholeheartedly!!
It is set in post WWII and runs up to the 90's. I liked reading about things I had forgotten from my childhood. And there is enough humor in the book to keep you reading. Seems like I couldn't get enough of this book. I'm looking forward to reading other books by Laurie Graham as well.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2006-11-27

I am am advid reader and someome suggested this book for our book club. Why? This book is so terrible that almost no one in our group read it. I read it because I ran the discussion. Not only is it poorly written, the characters are dull. They do stupid things and just seem so dumb-as do their husbands. There are too many people and the story line is terrible. What is the likelyhood of these American women taking up with an English women such as Kathy? The women do not seem to care for each other and only come together at the end because of a crisis. There is not one "normal" person in this bunch of misfits. What a sheer waste of time, when there are so many good books to read. I would have given this book a zero rating it it was an option.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, Well written, Fast read.......2006-06-17

I really liked this book. It was a great, quick paced read.

While reading over the other's reviews of the book I noticed one or two reviews that mention "Anti-American" and stereotyping of the British. (Which the latter is funny because I think that back of the book mentions that the author IS British.) I think people too often forget that the novels are a lot of the time written in character. So if the character makes a stupid comment about the Britsh it's because that is who that character is! And let's not forget that an American character or an English character are not representative of American/English people as a whole. So if a character might be stupid and coincidentally American, it does not mean that the book is Anti-American.

I found this book funny, well written, and very likeable. You grow to love the characters. I didn't find the beginning slow. As others have mentioned it's hard in the beginning to keep track of everyone, but it's like that in a lot of books.

I too found that the back of the book mentions something that doesn't actually happen in the book. (It's such a glaring mistake I am surprised no one noticed!)

2 out of 5 stars Not worthy of your time.......2006-03-15

My book club met last pm to discuss. 7 of 8 women were very disappointed by the quality of the author's writing as well as its negative portrayal of Americans. Would not recommend it!

                    Book Description

In her humorous, heartwarming Western romances, Geralyn Dawson creates characters we adore -- we laugh with them, we cry with them -- and, in her newest story, we wish like all get out we were them, as an independent widow and one hard, handsome Texan tangle, tussle, and tumble into love....

NEVER TRUST A WIDOW WOMAN WEARING A YELLOW DRESS...

That's what Captain Luke Prescott thinks when Honor Duvall, a vision in yellow muslin, steps outside the Bastrop Hotel to conduct the raffle drawing that has all of Texas talking. Mystery follows this thrice-widowed beauty like the hazy shadows of a summer night, and Luke, a renowned ex-Texas Ranger and bona fide hero, finds his professional suspicions aroused...among other things.

ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTS.

What Honor wants is Luke Prescott. With her family in danger, she needs the bravest man in Texas to help her save them. True, her plan to lure him to her remote ranch is a little unethical, but she'll make it up to him. Or so she thinks. Luke might be the one man Honor can't handle. He wants a prize she isn't willing to give. But Luke has the means to force her hand...because he holds the winning ticket in...The Wedding Raffle.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENTLY ENTERTAINING - GOOD READ.......2005-10-11

Humor, mystery, fun - great characters - neat plot - good dialog.

Why was there to be a raffle? Who was trying to kill the boys?
What was the mystery surrounding the deaths of 3 husbands?
This all leads to Honor Duval.

What happened to Captain Luke Prescott so that he is now out of the Texas Rangers? And who was the former theif and now friend, Gentleman Rafe Malone? What were they up to? Yup! they bought tickets for the raffle.

Honor Duval had two sons from her second marriage, Micah and Jason Best and a mother-in-law, Luella Bestto provide for and protect. They rounded out the story and were the driving force behind Honor.

Yet there was some intrigue going on that the widow in yellow was not willing to tell Luke about until he agreed to protect her sons. She just wanted to get away from Texas, away from the danger to her sons.

Luke demanded to see the quarter-miler mare, Starlight, that he won in the "raffle". I had to laugh when he finally got to see her.
Then he is shown Brown Baggage and the Arab stallion. Ideas slowly began to form.
I loved the subterfuge and the meeting of Richard Armstrong with Katie Starr at Gallagher's Inn [before her own adventure].

Excellent story - excellent plot - great characters - good entertainment - excellent villian, good riddance of Wild Horse Jerry Mullins.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED - Look for Rafe's story in THE WEDDING RANSOM. Good clean fun with a bit of history thrown in.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2005-04-17

I haven't read any of Miss Dawson's other work, so I don't know if this book is her typical style. It was one of the most poorly written books I've read in my thirty years of being a historical romance fan. The plot was unbelievable and the characterization was poor. I tried to like Honor Duvall and Luke Prescott but they weren't easy to warm up to. The writer gave us glimpses of their past lives which I suppose was to endear them to us. It didn't. The dialogue was stilted in places but in other passages it was good. The book had some great one liners but they couldn't make up for the other 337 pages of mediocraty. The most exasperating thing about this book was that just when I thought it was going to get better, it got worse. Hey, I tried to like it but I grew tired of being told to never trust a widow in a yellow dress. If you want a keeper, invest in a Carolyn Davidson or Diana Palmer. They'll give you lovable heroines, men to-die-for, and a sensual love story.

4 out of 5 stars A cut above the typical Western romance.......2001-06-24

So many Western American historical novels are out of the same mold. Vulnerable woman ends up on bitter man's ranch and so forth. The Wedding Raffle is an original in this field. The Literary Times review details the plot throughly.

First and foremost, both Honor and Luke are genuinely likeable. Both are wounded hearts but the reasons for their wounds ring true and the inevitable recovery happens realistically. I also really liked Honor's spitfire of a mother-in-law.

Where this book is unusual lies in a very skillful and interesting threat subplot. Most threat subplots are tedious and annoying. In this book, Dawson creates a plot that mixes up family dysfunction with a healthy dose of Texas politics in the years before Texas was annexed by the U.S. Sure I read romances for entertainment but I always enjoy it when education is artfully woven into the plot. This subplot works really well.

Bottom-line: A much better than average western historical. I'll keep it on my shelf and might be lending it out.

                    5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2000-08-02

The sensuous aura that emits from Honor & Luke in their effort not to fall in love with each other almost slids off the page into your lap! This offering from Geralyn Dawson isn't just a page turner....it's a page burner from the moment former Texas Ranger, Captain Luke Prescott first lays eyes on the widow in the yellow dress.

I'm now settling in to read "The Wedding Ranson" and hoping it captures my attention and time as thoroughly as "The Wedding Raffle" did. If Luke's friend, Rafe Malone is half as....ahem, tasty...as he was in "Raffle", then my hubby may be fixing his own dinner tonight while I read!

5 out of 5 stars Extrodinary, a book for a true Texan rose!.......1999-07-07

Geralyn Dawson has captured that which is so valued in the life of a Texan survival, and pure fun. Reading this book was like a trip back in time.

                      3 out of 5 stars Been through 3, why not a fourth?.......2000-12-15

Like the Rama series by Clarke, the Gateway series started out as something seemingly far different from what it became. In the end, all questions are answered, all things revealed... but did we need all of that? If you want to know the final answer to everything, reading Annals of the Heechee will give it to you, but sometimes things are best left to rest. This final story is set up entirely to give the reader the answer, but in doing so alot is sacrificed in terms of the actual tale. It can be finished in two or three hours for a slow reader (like myself), so if you just gotta know reading this won't be a signifigant task. On the other hand, if the mystery of things is what enchanted you to begin with, leaving a sleeping dog lie may be the better alternative.

For those thinking about reading the whole series, it may even be recommendable to stick with just the first two books. 3 and 4 just seem to beat things to death.

                      2 out of 5 stars Should've stopped at 3.......2000-06-03

The first book was one of the best sci fi novels I've ever read, the next two were also very enjoyable, but I have to say, this one almost reads either like someone else wrote it using Pohl's notes, or Pohl himself wrote it but only under extreme duress. Characters I had grown to love were reduced in this story to one-dimensional thumbnails. Earlier in the series, I had truly felt Robin's pain, his guilt, and later, I felt a certain satisfaction in watching him struggle through the whole thing and grow as a character, achieving success, and maybe more importantly piece of mind. In this story he was completely annoying and so was his wife. Gaahh! What a shame this was the closer! If you enjoyed the first three books in the story, do what I wish I had done - walk away from this one and forget you ever saw it.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointing conclusion to the Heechee Saga.......1997-10-03

While the first three volumes of the Heechee Sage proved highly engrossing and ingenious, "Annals of the Heechee" fails to live up to its predecessors. All of Pohl's well-devised characters seem reduced here to annoying stereotypes of themselves, repeating their idiosyncracies ad nauseum, rather than growing and changing. Too much of the book is devoted to reciting incidents of the previous books and impromptu science lectures by Albert Einstein. The movement of the plot is slow, and what few conflicts arise are quickly defused.

The book's conclusion is interesting enough (as well as abrupt, in the Pohl tradition), and while it is satisfying to finally find resolution to (most of) the great mysteries of the saga, it is not on par with what one would expect from such a promissing story to date.

                                  Taking Care of the Basics
The Man God Uses is a valuable book for anyone who wants to be used by God and develop Christian character traits. It is a seven week study that is self-contained I've used this study in small groups, as an individual study and in one-on-one discipleship with another man. The seven weekly studies include such essentials as The Character of the Man God Uses; How God Shapes a Man; God's Refining Process; Made for Times of Crisis; Being a Kingdom Citizen and On Mission With God. These are practical studies that enable one to take the scriptures and apply them to real life today.

4 out of 5 stars Encountering God in All Areas of Your Life.......2004-07-17

Henry and Tom Blackaby have written an excellent study on the aspects of God working in all areas of your life. The book contains 7 chapters with 5 daily studies in each chapter.

                                  The chapters are as follows:

Week 1 - The character of the Man God Uses.
Week 2 - How God Shapes a Man.
                                  Week 3 - God's Refining Process.
Week 4 - The Godly Man's Response to God.
Week 5 - Made for Times of Crisis.
                                  Week 6 - Being a Kingdom Citizen.
Week 7 - On Mission with God in Our World.

The book is an encouragement as you consider the ways and areas God wants to impact your life to bring others to Him for His glory.

                                  Read and enjoy. Recommended!

Blackaby uses a new approach to an old question. How do I get my life in the shape it needs to be for God to use me? Starting small, the book slowly takes you from what ever level that you are at to the place God wants you to be. Stressing the importence of you fellowship with God is the main thrust of the book. No one who truely involves themselves in what is written here will leave it the same as they were before. Thank God for men like Blackaby who use their gifts to help His people.

                                    Book Description

San Francisco is two cities: The pretty tourist mecca of glossy travel brochures, and the layered, flawed, intoxicating city that San Franciscans actually live in. Secret San Francisco is for those travelers who want to go beyond the postcard photo-ops and tried and untrue tourist destinations to explore the vibrant neighborhoods, intimate hideaways, and out-there adventures that make San Francisco so much more than pretty. Explored is the city's extreme-and-proud-of-it wild side: "Secret Cop Bars," "Secret Vibrators 'n Stuff," "Secret Taiwanese Pearl Drinks," "Secret Not of This Earth," "Secret Swank," "Secret Revolution," and "Secret Sam Spade & Dashiell Hammett." Tourist traps? San Francisco has plenty. Armstrong levels with you about them, and tells you where to find the secret treasures buried in the tackiest of traps. Secret San Francisco also details restaurants: San Francisco's most elegant expense-account Valhallas; no-frills, ultra-cheap joints; and multicultural delights.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Book.......2007-04-01

Lots of cool tips and suggestions that one wouldn't normally know about.

Unfortunately, its a bit dated it spots. For example a gallery I wanted to visit was closed now. The BART station at San Francisco Airport is now completed.

Overall a great book and a fun read too. I would recommend this if you dont want to just see all the tourist attractions.

Unique and quite helpful sums it up totally. Thanks to the author's research in so many things. It is high on my all-time favorite travel books.

This book surpassed my expectations. I love San Francisco, and one of my favorite things to do there is to walk around the city and enjoy all its quirky wonders. This book is a delightful guide to such places. It covers many old favorites, but it really does have a lot of secrets, too--places I had never heard of and am eager to check out. And not only does it contain great information, it's also very nicely written. The author clearly loves the City, and his voice throughout the book is authentic and enthusiastic, just as if a treasured friend were guiding one through this magical town. Lovely book.

Café culture has long played an integral role in San Francisco's history and cosmopolitan lifestyle. This delightful guidebook leads travelers and residents alike on a deliciously caffeinated tour of over 340 cafés in the city and East Bay. Each listing includes an address, phone number, and short write-up, giving readers a taste of each spot's unique ambience. Nearly all entries are pictured in full-color photos that capture the feel and atmosphere of a café. Some entries come with a story - the Caffe Proust, for example, is paired with an account of Marcel Proust's café experiences. There are also recipes, menus, vignettes, and profiles of local artists, café owners, and, of course, coffee-lovers, including Francis Ford Coppola, comedian Will Durst, and former mayor Willie Brown. Organized by neighborhood, the book offers a lovely walking tour of San Francisco's unique charms.

The book organizes coffee houses and cafes according to neighborhoods of San Francisco. In each of the neighborhoods are featured cafes, their stories, menus, and even some of the recipes. I know some great cafes must have been missed and omitted since coffee houses in San Francisco come and go and there are a plethora of them (not counting Starbucks, of course) that accentuate neighborhood identity. It would be a strenuous project to keep up-to-date of all the newcomers in the industry (so I'll expect, maybe, a yearly edition?). A great headstart and a perfect coffee-table book for barista connoisseur and just the daily dosers!

5 out of 5 stars Where has this book been all my life?.......2003-09-23

Well, damn. I mean, I LIVE here, and why haven't I seen this book before? There are unique cafes everywhere in San Francisco's cosmopolitan Bay Area, and what can be more cosmopolitan than discovering a new one, sitting at streetside between the fog rolling out and rolling back in, sipping a latte, and indulging in a little People Watching? I love it. There are more than 300 wonderful color photos, a directory to the more than 340 cafes profiles, lots of vignettes, tidbits, gossip items, and even some recipes.
                                    What's not to love?

If you have an item that needs a handle to hold it, the pattern is in this book. If it is not, then with imagination, the starting point is in this book. If the item is weighty, a macrame strap may be the answer. Do you need leashes for your glasses? There are several patterns that will suffice. There are loomed and off loom straps as well as one that is made with a spool-knitter. If you have never beaded before, some of the straps require practice before starting, but many are able to be compleated on the first try. The diagrams could have been clearer, but they will suffice. All one needs is a bead supplier for the seed beads and thread and you're ready to give it a go.

Researching a mystery novel with a Victorian subplot, I pillaged the library for reference books. This one (I've just ordered my own copy) stands far above the rest. Not only are the details accessible, but the book references design mavens and trendsetters of that time so you can follow those research threads as well. Only problem is the maddening absence of color in sections addressing color. The black and white "color wheel" on pg.130 has got to be a first. And what on earth is "citron?" Beyond that, however, this is a well-organized goldmine of thoroughgoing detail about Victorian decorating bound to delight those interested in authenticity.

I voluteer at an 1844 farm in Ann Arbor, MI. I have been researching paint colors and wallpaper for a sitting room and this book was the best source I have found. There is good descriptions of the tastes and styles of each time period as well as some pictures that really show what they are talking about. More pictures would have been helpful, but it's good book for those looking to do true historic restoration. My one problem with the book is the lack of paint colors. It will say, "they used to paint the rooms blue-green, grey or yellow" but the book doesn't show what these colors looked like or even what the color range to begin in. That is my only criticism. If you are looking to be completely accurate with your restoration more work and research would be required, but this book is the best place to start.

Two years ago, we moved into a house built in 1875, and bought up an armload of Victoriana books to tell us what to do with it. Most of them were "decorator porn" -- lots of gorgeous pictures (many photographing the same places) that inspire a person to go antique hunting or to refinish Aunt Martha's rocker. This book is different! It divides 70 years into 4 periods, and for each, tells you plenty about what went on the walls, on the floors,on the windows, on the ceilings. It tells how the composition of paint (and its effects) evolved over the century, recommends books for sources of historic wallpapers, and tells how to recapture Victorian room colors amidst modern lighting. Generous notes on bygone lifestyles, too, with sprinkled quotes from Charles Eastlake, Godey's Lady's Book, and other 19th century gurus of taste. If you want something to help you capture the look (or just understand it) of another century, here it is. More encyclopedic than (the also useful, but much shorter) "Creating Authentic Victorian Rooms." The downside? Very low porn quotient: No glossy paper and few colored pictures (even for contemporary photographs)--but numerous 19th-century prints and diagrams.

                                                  Book Description

This Book is what it says - a remix of Lewis Blackwell's critically acclaimed Twentieth-Century Type. Analysing, editing and augmenting his own text and choice of images, Blackwell provides a radically new assessment of the cutting-edge culture of typographic-led design in the late twentieth century.

This book challenges the concept of how typographic communication works today, but in doing so strengthen its ties with the traditions of the past. An introductory essay shows how current creative trends are simply part of the continuum of change that can be plotted from the turn of the last century to the turn of the next. Strong illustrated intersection dividers, specially commissioned from leading designers, set the scene for each chapter, or decade, and the space devoted to the 1990s has been substantially expanded.

Twentieth Century Type Remix is essential reference for anyone actively involved in the graphic design process.
