Book Description
As the Japanese military invades 1930s Manchuria, a young girl approaches her own sexual coming of age. Drawn into a complex triangle with two boys, she distracts herself from the onslaught of adulthood by playing the game of go with strangers in a public square--and yet the force of desire, like the occupation, proves inevitable. Unbeknownst to the girl who plays go, her most worthy and frequent opponent is a Japanese soldier in disguise. Captivated by her beauty as much as by her bold, unpredictable approach to the strategy game, the soldier finds his loyalties challenged. Is there room on the path to war for that most revolutionary of acts: falling in love?
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Story .......2007-06-22
This novel is perhaps the most sophisticated, sensual, tragic, uplifting, and horrifying examination of the experience of love that I have read. The complexity of emotions in the awakening womanhood of a teenaged Chinese girl at the onset of China's "War of Resistance" against Japan in the 1930s, as well as the poetic quality of the author's prose, at least in the original French version, make this a novel to remember and to reread. The tale of the heroine, Night Song (Chant de nuit), whose name appears only on the next to last page, is paralleled by that of the young Japanese army officer of samurai origin, whose uncritical acceptance of his nation's wartime imperialist outlook is put to the test when he must suddenly and unexpectedly choose between an act of terrible bestiality and one of transcending humanity.
Extremely disappointing.......2007-04-09
As a reasonably strong amateur Go player(3 kyu), I found the author's usage, and knowledge, of the game very limited. The gameplay could have been used to give more insight into the two main characters and their relationship, but instead was used only as a plot device to bring them together. I also did not like the girl, who came off as selfish and immature; the Japanese soldier's side of the story was more compelling. Because of the constant switching between perspectives, the narrative becomes a little disjointed, but the major problem is the florid writing. The shockingly brutal ending was suitably dramatic, however, and redeemed the book for me a little. If you like overheated romances set in WWII China, then this isn't a bad read. Everybody else can probably pass.
War and Love.......2006-07-17
I didn't enjoy this novel, partly because it is about war - extremely ugly war between the Japanese (invaders) and the Chinese (victims) - how could people ever behave like this towards other people? - but also because the love scenes read like war to me (such the young Chinese girl and her lover) - how could people ever behave like this towards other people (and submit to it!).
As a go player (very amateur) myself I was both disappointed and comfortable about the way the game is used in the novel. Disappointed because there wasn't much really about the game, but comfortable for the fact that the game was perhaps one of the few things that could draw the Japanese (who had adopted the game) and the Chinese together.
But, like the young girl's acceptance of sex and management of its outcomes - all gruesomely described - fate plays an inexorable part in the resolution of the novel.
Other recommendations:

'Riding the Red Rooster' - Theroux (for some insights into the Chinese)
Japanese/Chinese History as seen through the eyes of the participants........2006-03-04
This is an outstanding novel of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in the early 1930s, through the eyes of a high school aged Manchurian girl (The Girl Who Played Go) and a Japanese officer (whom she played Go with, not knowing that he was a Japanese officer stationed in Manchuria}. The officer was involved in actual missions against insurgents from time to time. The story is interesting from a factual historical point of view, even from the mindset that led to the estblishment of the "Comfort Women" as an officially sanctioned Japanese policy. The historical aspect is enlightened by the complex human relationships of the two main protagonists. The novel brings to light the personal contradictions of the two also;their human relations; the national pride of each; the loneliness of their circumstances; and finally the heroic actions of each that ends in mutual tragedy. The story reminded me to a degree of the story of Romeo and Juliette; though they never professed love for one another verbally, their actions implied that affection between them was possible.
I would definitely recommend it as a must read. The style is also intriguing as the two and three page chapters switch back and forth among the protagonists, both in real time and in flashbacks of times past that were happier and led to the developed personalities of the present.
Heart shattering..windswept descriptions of love, loss and war.......2006-01-20
well it goes over quickly, but not painlessly. she spares you no descriptions. she lays all her pieces out on the table and the it ain't a pretty picture. this is back when Japan invades Manchuria. a japanese soldier acting as spy, goes down to a local Go playing park and plays against a young manchurian girl. supposedly through the playing of GO the come to know each other, though they never speak. the descriptions of Japanese treatment of the manchurians and the rebellion are heartbreaking and painful. this is not a happy story. but a powerful and original one.

Book Description
This coming-of-age WWII adventure-epic tells the story of a British woman ferry pilot, as seen through the eyes of her young son. The war unleashes havoc on the life of Andrew Hadley-Trevelyan, transforming him from a naive nine-year-old into a conflict-scarred young man of fourteen. Along the way must cope with bombings, family disruptions, traumatic partings, terror, loss, grief, guilt, the invasion of his country by overpaid, oversexed, and over here Yanks, his own unwanted exile to America, bigotry, school bullies, culture shock, unexpected sudden fame, and romantic entanglements.
Through all this, Andrew is not a helpless victim, nor is he a saint. For better or worse, he internalizes the war raging around him and often strikes out in the only way he can. He sasses his mother and gets into trouble at school. He can be snotty, sneaky, scathing, spiteful, and extremely bad-tempered. Though he is capable of keeping a British stiff upper lip, he often goes ballistic when provoked. He not only gets into fights with boys his own age, he brawls with grown men. He is an expert in the dirty-tricks department when it comes to getting what he wants, and often hurts those he loves the most. Some of his endeavors are light-hearted and non-malicious, a needed counterbalance to the destructive forces raging around and within him: He parleys his prowess at poker into liberating candy and comic books from American GIs, and cleverly goes about acquiring an education (in theory) about the facts of life. Still, his outer workings conceal a desperate struggle to transcend the bonds of his rage and fear, and to find his way in a world gone mad with violence and hate. His better self is capable of extraordinary love, fierce loyalty, and tender kindness. He is a tangle of passions, prejudices, and principles, a lost soul with a heart of darkness and a heart of gold. The fortunes of war set him on a bizarre, bewildering course; in the end he must come to terms with what five years of devastating worldwide conflict have made of his life. Even as peace is declared, he is still caught in the throes of bitterness, self-hatred, and despair. Chri stmas of 1945 brings him to the greatest crisis of his life, and a climactic twist following a shattering revelation propels him into courageous, compassionate maturity.
The Battle of Britain is the central historic event to Mother Flies Hurricanes, blowing Andrews peaceful life into chaos. Other episodes of the Second World War impact on his life, in ways great and small: the invasion of Russia, the Battle of the Atlantic, the Normandy Invasion, Nazi concentration camps, the V-1 and V-2 attacks upon England, and the Battle of the Bulge. The stars of Mother Flies Hurricanes are the men and women of Britain's Air Transport Auxiliary, as Andrews mother signs on to do her bit in her country's fight against Nazi Germany. This organization drew pilots from thirty-one countries, and was the first in the world to employ women in ferrying military aircraft. Andrew is made keenly aware of the struggle the women ferry pilots face to be accepted on equal terms during a time in which there was much entrenched opposition and intolerance within society, and the military establishment, towards women doing a mans job. The women readily gained acceptance among their fellow male pilots in the ATA with their skill and professionalism; by the wars end their sterling record of efficiency and safety would prove to the world that they were equal in every respect to the men. Andrew is very proud of his mother, but worries constantly for her safety. His fears are not groundless: The aviators of the ATA had a greater chance of being killed in the line of duty than a US Marine. They have been called the Forgotten Pilots, overshadowed by the more visible pilots in military service, but they are heroes none the less. Though they did not meet the Axis forces in battle, their work in keeping the pilots of the Royal Air Force supplied with aircraft was just as vital to the war effort.
Best described as a cross between Harry Potter and War and Remembrancer, Mother Flies Hurricanes is a story of love, heroism, hope, friendship, and family.

Robin's Return is an inspiring story of a mother's love and her son's quest to share the wonders of the afterlife.
When Dorothy Davis's son Robin was killed in Viet Nam, his death seemed senseless and tragic. As it turns out, Robin's service to mankind did not end with his earthly passing; he continued to help and serve in the spirit world. Through communications with Dorothy, Robin (and later, Dorothy's husband Ray) told of the love and beauty of the afterlife, and shared information on how we all can improve the lives of others, both here on earth and in the spiritual plane.

Biblical, church-historical and Reformed roots of worship........2005-03-16
Review by Rev. George van Popta
In this book, the author introduces all the different aspects of Reformed worship. He treats the following parts: baptism; the Lord's day; the ministry of praise; the ministry of the Word; the ministry of prayer; the Lord's supper; daily prayer; alms. In each case he discusses Old and New Testament roots, development in the synagogue, the early church and the middle ages, and reformation. Old has clearly mastered his topic on both the large and small scales. His bibliography is extensive.
In the final chapter," Tradition and Practice," the author enumerates a 15-point program for the renewal of worship in American Protestantism. He wants to avoid two extremes: the first is a sort of archaeological reconstruction in the English language of classic Reformed liturgies that do no more than mechanically and unthinkingly reproduce the tradition; the second is an ignoring of our traditions and of giving ourselves to perpetual liturgical revision (or revolution) thereby losing sight of the great value and importance of having a set liturgy. A tradition radically changed every generation is not a tradition.
This is a good book and very pleasant to read. The one who reads it will learn much about the biblical and church-historical roots of the different parts of the worship of the Reformed churches and be led to reflect on why we do things the way we do.
Here are two interesting quotations from the book. This first one (p. 148) is in the context of an argument to renew the classical Reformed practice of daily household worship:
"For classical Reformed spirituality, morning and evening family prayer was one of the foundations of piety. It was at the heart of the day to day exercising of Christian faith. This made sense to those for whom Covenant theology was so formative. The unity of the family was a significant feature of Covenant theology. With the coming of pietism, daily family prayer was unfortunately replaced with private devotions.
"Pietism was very individualistic and many of this persuasion had a hard time understanding why children should be baptized. There was no sacred unity in the family. Each single human being stood before God alone. With the demise of pietism, private devotions began to develop atrophy. They finally became not much more than "five minutes a day." Today as we seek to recover a Reformed spirituality, we need to reach behind pietism and recover the older classical Protestant discipline of daily morning and evening prayer."
I'm confident Old is not advancing an either-or dilemma between family worship and private devotion. Surely both are important. He is writing in a North American context that eschews the corporate for the individualistic in matters of relationship to God and neighbour.
What follows is the concluding paragraph after the author has put forward his 15-point renewal program for (North) American Protestantism:
"This program for the renewal of worship in American Protestant churches of today may not be just exactly what everyone is looking for. In our evangelistic zeal we are looking for programs that will attract people. We think we have to put honey on the lip of the bitter cup of salvation. It is the story of the wedding of Cana all over again but with this difference. At the crucial moment when the wine failed, we took matters into our own hands and used those five stone jars to mix up a batch of Kool-Aid instead. It seemed like a good solution in terms of our American culture. Unfortunately, all too soon the guests discovered the fraud. Alas! What are we to do now? How can we possibly minister to those who thirst for the real thing? There is but one thing to do, as Mary the mother of Jesus, understood so very well. You remember how the story goes. After presenting the problem to Jesus, Mary turned to the servants and said to them, "Do whatever he tells you." The servants did just that and the water was turned to wine, wine rich and mellow beyond anything they had ever tasted before."

For anyone who loves good food, it can be a sad, sad day when the doctor looks you in the eye and tells you to strip the fat out of your diet. It's one of those "if you fail, you die" messages. Never pleasant.
Best to keep on hand a copy of Don Mauer's A Guy's Guide to Great Eating, if only for moral support in times of dread. Mauer received just such a message. But rather than sulk, he tore into his favorite dishes and figured out how to yank out a lot of the fat without sacrificing big flavor. He lost 100 pounds for his efforts, and published the wildly popular Lean and Lovin' It.
A big guy not likely to take kindly to spa-sized portions, Mauer has intentionally aimed A Guy's Guide to Great Eating at men with big, meat-and-potatoes appetites. The idea is that only 25 percent or less of the calories in any recipe in this book can be attributed to fat. This isn't to say that the Double Chocolate Chip Fudge Brownies aren't fattening at 167 calories per serving (it's the two cups of sugar). They just aren't loaded with fat (only 11.1 percent of the calories come from fat). The main point here is that they actually taste good and can fit into a realistic diet.
Mauer includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. You'll find Light-As-Air Buttermilk Pancakes, Great Gawd Almighty Gumbo, A Guy's Better Burger, Kickass Beef-Chunk Chili, Sizzlin' Szechuan Chicken, Steakhouse Oven-Fried Potatoes, as well as cookies, cakes, and pies. All of that and Mauer doesn't rely on any never-seen-in-nature products. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
From the author of the spectacularly successful "Lean and Lovin' It", a brawny collection of big-flavored, fat-reduced recipes for men who love to eat. A once overweight guy who never met a food he didn't love, Don Mauer learned the hard way that most low-fat cookbooks don't appeal to meat-and-potatoes taste buds and come with skimpy portions that may work for New York fashion models but leave men hungry. This cookbook is different, written for men by a real guy with a big appetite. The 175 easy-to-make recipes - Smokin' Chili Pepper Cheeseburgers, Seemingly Sinful Fat-Free Roasted Garlic Whipped Potatoes, Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Pie, Fresh Blueberry Cobbler - are based on Mauer's own favorites. The guy-sized portions get 20 percent or less of their calories from fat, and each recipe comes with a full nutritional analysis, including the amount of saturated fat. "A Guy's Guide to Great Eating" will end the arguments in the kitchen between men who insist on eating what they love and the people who love them.

This book is fantastic! I loved every recipe I tried! Bravo Don! Bravo!
No silly foofy food here.......2004-02-02
You don't have to be a guy to appreciate this book stuffed full of date-worthy dishes. I use this cookbook more than any on my shelf, and noone can ever believe these recipes are low-fat. From Chinese food to Carolina-style turkey BBQ, everything I've tried so far in this book is a real winner. Thank you, Don Mauer, for showing us healthy food that can be every bit as rich and tasty as the "bad" stuff.
excellent.......2002-02-06
This book, along with Don Mauer's prior cookbook, Lean and Lovin It, helped me lose over 70 pounds. A lot of low fat cookbooks really aren't written by people who like to eat or cook, and it shows. This one is written by someone who enjoys both. These recipes make eating low fat food not just palatable, but a way of life. One note -- a few of the recipes in this book appear to be improvements from the earlier cookbook -- the hummus and cocolate sauce recipes come to mind -- but I'm actually happy to try the variations.
A Guy's guide to great Eating.......2002-01-18
I have been using low-fat cookbooks for about 10 years and this is the best low-fat cookbook I have ever owned (this is impressive, due to the fact that I probable own 50 low-fat cookbooks). Every recipe I have tried so far is wonderful. The servings are big enough for both my husband and me. This is not just a man's cookbook, it is a cookbook for anyone who likes to eat and cook.
Great recipes--low fat or not!.......2001-07-04
Mauer's recipes are excellent. Of the couple dozen cookbooks I have on the kitchen shelf, I use his the most. The recipes come out great. In fact, the most popular meal I ever made for book club came entirely from this book. People raved about it and never knew it was low fat.

This book includes virtually all knife manufacturers, both old and new: Chicago Cutlery, Holley, Belknap, Eagle, Remington, E.C. Simmons, Shapleigh, Winchester, Aerial, and Imperial, to name just a few. The guide presents a common sense system for 'total appraisal' using the RBR scales; overviews of all the major knife companies; notes on commemoratives, reproductions, and limited editions; knife clubs and organizations; numbering systems used by companies; and current collector values. More than 800 line drawings and an expanded full color photo gallery showcasing the various handle materials -- celluloid, wood, bone, abalone, ivory, metal, plastic, and more. 2002 values. AUTHORBIO: Roy Ritchie is a noted expert on knives, and provides certified appraisals of knives and collections, as well as assists insurance companies with appraisals and adjustment evaluations. He and co-author Ron Stewart published one of the earliest books for collectors, the Kentucky Knife Traders Manual. They went on to publish the bestselling Standard Knife Collector's Guide, and later books followed: Big Book of Pocket Knives, Cattaraugus Cutlery Company, and Standard Guide to Razors. REVIEW: Standard Knife Collector's Guide: big, wide-ranging, and inexpensive. These factors have made this title one of the three or four most popular books in the knife business. With almost a hundred pages added to this edition, the new page count comes to nearly 800. The heart of this book is the extensive listing of major knife companies and brands, which provides many illustrated examples that apply the authors "RBR" system for determining a value of almost any brand of folding knife. -Knife World

A 'bible' of knife values and history........2007-03-12
The fifth updated edition of The Standard Knife Collector's Guide remains a 'must' pick for any who would regularly consult a 'bible' of knife values and history. Over seven hundred pages pack in details on major knife companies, issues, collectible ratings, current stampings and more, with small black and white photos and illustrations enhancing the book's reference value for collectors. It's a specialty item to be sure - but knife collecting is one of the most popular collector's items and so this book is sure to see ongoing interest for any collector library patron.

review by dealer / collector.......2007-02-21
Excellent in every way. The authors have incorporated years of common sense in their advice. The rating scale is a stroke of genius. Thank you.
Waste of money.......2002-05-07
Other than proposing to be a knife price guide, this book has no information about knives, other than a very cursory overview, for someone who knows absolutely nothing about knives. The book fails miserably in its attempt to be an informative price guide. The concockted mathematical formula for determining a knife's value is devoid of reality. In the case of certain brands, such as "Case" and "Cattaraugus", the values are so far below real world values that the book is almost entertaining as a jest. Someone who wants to learn about knives and gain a feel for their values would best be served by getting a copy of Levine's 4th Edition. I wish I had read my own review before I purchased this book.
Useful, but still disappointing.......2001-01-14
The strong suit of this book is the section recounting the histories of dozens of knife manufacturers, as well as the six appendixes, which give detailed identification information and price guidance for Buck Creek, Case, Cattaraugus, Robeson, Remington, Taylor, and Winchester.
But the stuff that is missing is annoying, especially in a book that calls itself a "standard guide," and is in its third edition. There is neither a glossary nor an index. The title itself is misleading: this book deals only with pocket knives, and less than exhaustively at that. I was surprised not to see information on modern innovations like the Tanto blade and the Walker lock. Important makers such as Keen Kutter, Leatherman and SOG are not mentioned. Then again, the authors also fail to mention Damascus steel, switchblades, gravity knives and butterfly knives. There is a windy essay on the desirability of bone as a handle material, but no advice how to tell bone from ivory, Delrin or other imitation materials. A chapter about knife shields (or escutions) promises to tell why they are important, but fails. In one spot the authors go on at length about counterfeit knives, and in another they discuss reproductions, but they fail to make the obvious connection between the two, or explain the difference. Very little information appears about watch fob knives or "gentleman's" knives. The authors rank Marbles pocket knives as a "top priority" collectible, but there is almost no specific information about them.
More annoying are the little errors and typos throughout the book. When I found Bakelite identified as a type of hard rubber, I almost threw the book across the room. This is such an obvious mistake that it leaves me wondering what more subtle inaccuracies are in the book. Finally, nobody has edited the text for clarity or consistency, leaving the reader to plow through repetitious paragraphs, some of which actually say nothing.
I would not recommend against buying this book, but it is a disappointment. Unfortunately, it is all too typical of the quality of material that we find in books about collectibles, and not only from this publisher. Collectibles books are expensive, and apparently profitable since there are so many. The buying public deserves better, and should demand it.
Good First Knife Collector Guide.......1999-07-14
This was one of two knife collector books I purchased as a beginning collector/seller. I was glad to see a WR Case & Son, Buck Creek, Cattaraugus, Robeson, Remington, and Winchester pricing guides. Also, good commerative price guide and knife history as well.

Making Picture Frames in Wood.......2007-01-19
A good beginners book for want-to-be wood picture framers. Includes a bonus feature of creating your own designs in the wood frame with the use of a router. Good basic instruction.
Classic Craftmanship but displayed in black and white........2006-06-01
I found the information in this book very helpful, even inspiring. "Making Picture Frames" was a birthday gift a couple of years ago. I find myself referring to it constantly, even today. The topics include making custom wood moldings, wood finishing techniques, and it has about 50 molding profiles for inspiration. His techniques for building up compound frames are interesting and helpful. Perhaps the low point is the chapter on matting. Keep in mind that this book was written way-back-when, and it shows its age. Mr. Banister would have found digital photography very helpful. Not glossy, but very informative. ---An easy read.

Book Description
"I'm one of the very few [writers] who wait anxiously to see what new delights the book cover will bring."--Terry Pratchett. Original artworks of rare distinction--all born from a very special partnership between an author and the painter who faithfully brings his fantastical universe to life in images. When Josh Kirby received the commission to do the cover for Terry Pratchett's first Discworld novel, he had no inkling that this would lead to something much bigger than a one-off assignment. However, since that time, their partnership has expanded beyond the series to include two earlier sci-fi and several children's books, as well as Eric, a fully-illustrated novella. Here, in richly dazzling colors and vividly energetic designs, are the wizards, witches, bizarre creatures, and (of course!) voluptuous maidens that populate this unusual world--a disc of sea and land balanced on the backs of four elephants, which themselves ride on the back of a cosmic turtle that swims through space. Plus: a selection of paintings from their other collaborations.

A pioneer of modern warfare, almost forgotten.......2006-11-13
There was a time, 300 years ago, when Robert Holmes was as famous for his victories -- especially his brilliant raid, when most of the Dutch merchant fleet was burned at its moorings, ever after known as Holmes' Bonfire -- as Marlborough was for his. But perhaps because of his modesty, or because his line petered out, or because materials were scarce, for nearly three centuries there was no full biography of this founder of Britain's sea supremacy.
In 1969, Richard Ollard remedied most of this with 'Man of War.' Elegantly written and deeply informed, the biography disappoints only by its thinness. This, however, is not Ollard's fault.
In those more spacious days, Holmes set out to make a career as a cavalryman and ended up an admiral. Allied with Prince Rupert and the Stuarts, he participated in desperate adventures, not only in England but in Africa and the Caribbean.
The early Stuart navy was still more medieval than renaissance, and not at all modern. It was the Roundheads who began to regularize and modernize, appointing army generals to command at sea. In the dingdong battles of the Dutch wars, they, so to speak, lost the spurs they had won so hardly and won cocked hats.
Intelligent men, they quickly learned naval strategy. Holmes, as good as any of them, carried this intelligence over into peacetime, when he helped create the administration of the modern navy. Another reason he may have been relegated to obscurity is that he often tangled with Samuel Pepys, the secretary, who by both merit and his ever-interesting diary, became a more revered figure.
Holmes deserves, from the English, as much consideration. His life was full of revolutions, and near its end, one more, when the Stuarts were replaced and Holmes, as civil governor of the Isle of Wight, had to deal with the invasion of William's army. Ollard writes: 'His resilience, his stout-heartedness and his personal loyalty shine brightly in what for him must have been days of darkness and disaster. He was old and infirm; the cause of the Stuarts whom he he served without romanticism but with honour and fidelity, never more conspicuous than in ectremes of misfortune, was manifestly lost; but until the King admitted defeat Holmes would not desert him.'
This book should be read by anyone interested in naval history, especially the professionalization and modernization of the Royal Navy.
Note: The title is 'Man of War,' not 'Phoenix Man of War' as listed in Amazon's catalogue. Phoenix is the British publishing house responsible for this reprint.
A Brave and Brilliant Patriot.......2004-09-08
Robert Holmes was a brilliant and professional admiral who served the House of Stuart faithfully and well, at great personal cost to himself. He began as a dashing soldier in Charles I's Cavalier army. After power was usurped by Oliver Cromwell and his firebrand Puritans, Holmes remained loyal to King-in-Exile, serving as one of Prince Rupert's most effective lieutenants in the famous cruise of the Royalist fleet during the 1650s. When, in 1660, legitimate government returned in the form of King Charles II, Holmes became a leading supporter of the Royal Africa Company and, later, admiral in the Restoration navy. Ollard provides a brilliant account, based on contemporary sources, of Holmes's controversial raid on the Dutch fortresses in Gambia (arguably provoking the Second Anglo-Dutch war); he also explains Holmes's role in intercepting the Dutch Smyrna fleet (arguably causing the Third Anglo-Dutch war). The climax of the story is Holmes's brilliant raid on islands of Vlie and Schelling, dealing much-deserved retribution to the Dutch aggressor. Finally the author traces Holmes's virtual retirement to the position of governor of the Isle of Wight. A comprehensive biography of a much-neglected defender of English liberty.

inspiring.......2007-08-14
I do the same thing as the presious review when reading discworld books with his illistrations i always look forward to the moment in the book that is illistrated on the cover, and as the previous reviewer also find new things all the time, his work is beautifuly styled.
Best cover ilustration ever.......2007-01-05
I never seen such a good (perfect?) match between a writer and a cover illustrator. Josh Kirby illustrated the atmosphere and inhabitants of the Discworld with such an amazing accuracy. I was usually disappointed by graphic interpretations of fantasy novels, it was never really what I have imagined. With Josh Kiby illustrations, I enjoyed going back and forth to the cover while reading the book, there is so many details in these drawings that you always find new things you didn't notice at the first look. Truly inspiring.

"The Boswell of the blue bloods."--San Francisco Examiner.
"One of the snappiest writers around."--Liz Smith, New York Daily News.
From the author of the best-selling People Like Us and The Two Mrs. Grenviles comes this unvarnished look at the gilded world of the real-life rich and famous. Here are the highly colorful and highly provocative look at the gilded world of the real-life rich of famous. Here are the highly colorful and highly provocative close-up interviews Dominick Dunne has written for Vanity Fair. In them, Dunne tells all about today's creme de la creme as only as insider can tell it. Here is his engaging profile of the everlasting regal Elizabeth Taylor; a bizarre encounter with Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos exiled in Hawaii; a revealing, behind-the-scenes portrait of the great poseur Claus von Bulow; an inquiry into the squalid life and mysterious death of Alfred Bloomingdale's mistress, Vicki Morgan; Dunne's moving account of his daughter's violent death and the man who got away with her murder; as well as revealing glimpses of Ivan Boesky, Ava Gardner, Diane Keaton, Gloria Vanderbilt, Candy and Aaron Spelling, and others-plus a look inside the exclusive Mortimer's restaurant and the real Palm Beach. Sassy and stirring, candid and controversial, Fatal Charms is a startling expose of charm-in all its guises-both fatal and benign.

Book Description
Dominick Dunne has met them all--stars and slugs, criminals and victims, the innocent and the hideously guilty--and now his two provocative collections of Vanity Fair portraits are in one irresistible volume. From posh Park Avenue duplexes to the extravagant mansions of Beverly Hills, from tasteful London town houses to the wild excesses of million-dollar European retreats, here are the movers and shakers--and the people who pretend to be.
Among colorful profiles and revealing glimpses of Elizabeth Taylor, Claus von Bülow, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Aaron Spelling, discover who dumped an heiress the night before the wedding to run off with the best man . . . what happens when the ex-husband of a movie legend becomes president . . . why a beautiful singer fell in with the mob . . . and, in Dunne's most personal story, how a lying murderer and a limelight-loving judge denied justice to his family after his daughter's life was brutally destroyed.
Filled with pathos and wit, insight and sass, this candid, controversial volume gives you an extraordinary peek into the rarefied world of the rich, the royal, and the ruined. For Dunne is the man who knows all their secrets--and now those secrets are out.
Customer Reviews:
Not his best work..........2002-12-22
Dunne is a fantastic and fun writer. This collection gets bogged down however. Many of the stories are dated and the updates are not recent. Many of the stories are reprinted in the far superior colleciton, Justice. Still, parts of this book, particularly the Gloria Vanderbilt story, stand out. If you like Dunne, I would start with Justice and move backwards. It is fun to read many of his stories do have something of a timeless quality. I was frustrated with parts of book which seemed dated and dull. Ahh..what do I know. Dunne is still great.
An All-Night Page Turner!.......2001-08-22
It's had been quite some time since I'd picked-up a book I couldn't put down, but this one ended the drought! It made me an instant Dominick Dunne fan and wishing that he'd continue the saga for the Bradley family in future novels. If you have ever been intrigued by the lifestyles of the rich and infamous, or the larger than life experiences of the Kennedy's, then click on the order button and prepare to curl up with this unforgettable story!
Addicted to the Pages.......2001-07-26
When I picked up Mr. Dunne's novel for my book collection of his amazing works, it was another week of neglecting my duties as a Mother to my starving children. Thank goodness for the microwave! I am a Vanity Fair subscriber and always will be due to Mr. Dunne's genius writing. Mrs. Litras.
Truly engaging read.......2000-08-02
I have enjoyed Dominick Dunne's novels (novels in disguise!), but this book has left me wishing I had been a Vanity Fair subscriber. I never realized what I had been missing, although I might have not read anything else in that magazine. I almost didn't order it, because I was disappointed with his previous work-The Way We Lived Then-which was exactly what he said it was, the recollections of a well-known name dropper, all names and not much content. However-this book is wonderful-and probably more so the recollections of a name dropper. Incredible true stories of the rich and famous, and maybe some not so famous, all intensely interesting. A number of the essays involve crime-beginning with his description of the trial of the man who killed his daughter, and including pieces on the Mendez brothers, O.J. Simpson, Claus Von Bulow, and more, told as only an "insider" could. Yet not all of the tales are crime related, so if you're looking for tabloid-style, tell all stories, this probably isn't the book for you. He tells the tales of high society with a touch of class, and I can't imagine that he has made many enemies, and probably remains in good favor with most of the people he has included in these pages. I finished the book wanting to go back and re-read several of my favorite stories, and wishing there was a sequel I could now continue with. Enjoy-I read it in 2 days.

Book Description
In this vivid fifth volume of The Seer series, Sabine Rose is reunited with her ill grandmother Nona and her friends at Sheridan Valley. But the excitement of curing Nona-and discovering love with someone new-doesn't outweigh the burden of her father's dark secret: a daughter no one but Sabine knows about. Riddled with curiosity, Sabine uses astral projection to spy on her half sister Jade. And then one night-while out of body-she witnesses a gruesome murder! The victim appears to be Jade's mother, but the next day reveals she is very much alive. Was it all a terrible nightmare?
A puzzling psychic message, feelings for two different guys, building resentment towards her father and Jade-it's almost too much to bear. And when the killer from her nightmare turns out to be real, Sabine finds she must open her heart to the person she trusts the least.

This book was really good! It was very hard for me to put it down! Definitely a good ending to the series.
Awesome.......2007-09-01
I really loved the book and was sad to see that it was the last one. I think she could keep going and talk about what's gonna happen with sabine and her sister.
Awesome.......2007-08-25
i love Linda Joy Singleton and i hope if you people out there read it
be sure 2 start with the first book

A Thrilling Conclusion.......2007-08-12
Though I'm not exactly sure, I believe Fatal Charm is the last book in the Seer series by Linda Joy Singleton. And as the fifth book, it rocks! Seriously, I went to Borders the day this book came out and asked one of the saleswomen to open the box in back for me. She did and I finished the book in a few hours.
Such a wonderful book. It is so unlike the previous four, and so much longer! I almost couldn't believe how captivating it was -- but that's Singleton's style, right? This book wasn't just about Sabine finding a charm. This book was about Sabine's journey. Singleton introduced so many new twists and turns (that I won't give away in this review). I was so happy with the outcome. She wrapped things up nicely.
Sabine is a truly unique character. I loved reading about her reactions and her thoughts. The only downside to the book was the lack of Manny and Thorn. They didn't exactly play large roles, but still the book was great.
I definitely encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. Of course, I would recommend the previous four books in the Seer series first. If you enjoy fantasy, then you'll enjoy this series.
Worth the wait!.......2007-07-19
Still keeping quiet about her psychic gift, Sabine is totally thrilled to return to her grandmother Nona's farm and be back with her friends and boyfriend in safe Sheridan Valley.
But Nona's rapidly failing health has Sabine and Dominic frantically unraveling the coded charms to find a lost cure-hidden for over 100 years.
Linda Singleton takes the reader on a whirlwind adventure. This is the fifth book in The Seer series. I loved all of her books but this one was so worth the wait. There's romance, mystery, danger, and even a surprise.
I would recommend this book and the rest of the series to those who enjoyed such books as BLUE IS FOR NIGHTMARES and THE MEDIATOR series.
