5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2007-04-21

An interesting family saga in which the author deals with many social issues - many of which are current today. These include the plight of 'illegal aliens', war, incest, parental skills or lack thereof as well as abandonment.
The characters are extremely well done. Much of Greg's(protagonist's) life revolves around Carmen and Olga, who are the most forceful characters in the story. Even the very minor characters, like the white haired granny peddling her services beneath the table, are unforgettable.
The author is excellent at descriptions and is frequently very humorous.
Much of the book is philosophical. Greg is continually searching for happiness outside of himself. Carmen informs him that "every person is born with a talent and happiness depends on discovering that talent in time." (233). On the subject of children, Greg admits that his own children had grown up like savages, without care and without real love but they never lacked for anything material. He concludes that money is a poor substitute for the affection he didn't know how to give. Heavy! And so true.
An excellent read!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Find!.......2006-06-13

I picked this up from the library shelf on a whim, having read and loved "Daughter of Fortune" and other Allende books. What a great find! I really enjoyed this book, and have recommended it to my mom, an avid reader (like me) who's also a book snob (kinda like me).

Give it a shot -- a worthwhile journey.

4 out of 5 stars Life as It Is.......2006-01-18

Isabel Allende's The Infinite Plan is a well developed novel that explores themes such as identity, race, and belonging. The novel follows the life of Gregory Reeves from childhood to adulthood. Throughout the novel, Gregory must confront the stages of life that everyone undergoes. There are losses but there are also triumphs. From a very early age, Gregory must learn the reality of life. Gregory must learn that there is always a time to settle down. He learns that life can not be a constant adventure as his father, a self-styled preacher and artist, portrayed it to be traveling and moving his family constantly. Gregory always felt his father was a modern day hero saving people from their meaningless lives infusing them with hope. However, when Gregory's father becomes ill and the family finally settles down Gregory begins to lose not only his father but his sense of where in life he belongs.
Gregory's slowly loses respect for his father as he becomes disillusioned with life. Most of Gregory's faltering relationships including with his mother and sister show his instability in life. He is unsure about who he is and what he wants to become. For example, Gregory's relationship with his mother is virtually nonexistent as Gregory explains, "All that tied me to my mother were literature and school notebooks, music, and love for observing the stars. She never touched me; I had grown accustomed to her physical remoteness and reserved temperament"(54). Clearly, Gregory is left searching for love and acceptance even in his relationship with his mother. He is on a journey looking for who he belongs with and exactly where it is that he belongs. Gregory was fortunate to enjoy a strong, loving bond with his sister for many years but as soon as they settled down in the barrio their relationship came to a halt. Judy, Gregory's sister, tells him "that the stories, the dreams, and all the rest were over, and that [he] was too big for such nonsense" (55). Essentially, Gregory is alone in the world without immediate family and must learn to fend for himself.
Additionally, he is immersed into an environment in which he knows little about. His family settles down in a Latin barrio in Los Angeles, California. A new life begins for Gregory as he attends school for the first time. He is introduced to gangs, sex, drugs, books and ideas. However, the biggest challenge is that he must learn a new language and a new culture. Gregory slowly learns the street smarts he needs to survive but he loses sense of who he truly is. The rest of his life is a pursuit of finding where he is supposed to belong. He looks for love in all the wrong places, becomes a drunk, neglects his children, and spends a good part of his life searching for his true self. It is not until Gregory goes back to his roots that he is finally able to find who he is and where he belongs in life.
Allende's novel is truly an awe inspiring novel. Isabel has been able to teach so much about life and the importance of relationships, identity, and belonging. Allende combines her knowledge of Latin and American culture to create a realistic world. Her characters show the complexity of life and the utter chaos that comes of trying to break barriers.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing Read.......2005-08-15

This is generally well-written, but Allende made the characters represent too much of their entire culture, and so they are not very believable. The book drags because you don't care about the people. Caucasion American characters are greedy, lazy, immoral with no family values. Latinos are simple, traditional, their lives depend on the strength of the family. Asians are quiet, smart, unemotional. I was definitely disappointed in this book. In addition, her portrayal of American culture during the Vietnam era and the '70's is cliche. The book really loses its allure halfway through when the uninteresting, 2 dimensional characters are described in a poorly written stereotypical setting. I expected more from Allende.

4 out of 5 stars Travels with Gregory.......2005-05-17

Gregory Reeves goes through some stuff.

Growing up in the East Los Angeles barrio, his mother a Russian immigrant and his father an itinerant preacher (of sorts), Gregory proves himself by racing his nemesis, a bully named Martinez, across the railroad tracks in front of an oncoming train. Martinez doesn't make it across.

Then he goes to Viet Nam, where he narrowly escapes death. He returns to the Bay Area, finishes law school, and becomes an attorney.

He marries young, but not happily, and divorces right away. He marries a second time, to his beautiful secretary, but after giving birth to a boy, she changes her mind, leaving him with the child.

Gregory's two children are both wayward, but his daughter more so: she turns into a teenage hooker and drug addict.

Gregory makes a pile of money but always seems to be in debt, because of his costly tastes and his support payments to the ex-wives and children.

Finally, toward the end of the book, he is sued for malpractice and loses. He has no malpractice insurance and it looks like he has "hit bottom." But instead of giving up, he keeps on trying, by more or less resigning from the rat race. His friends lend or give him money to get back up, and he continues, we assume, practicing law but in a more relaxed atmosphere.

There are a great many interesting subsidiary characters in this book, but the next most prominent to Gregory Reeves is probably Carmen Morales, aka Tamar, Gregory's childhood girlfriend from East Los Angeles.

Her story more or less interweaves with Gregory's throughout the book, although Gregory is the only character to speak in the first person, from time to time. We find out on the final page of the book that Gregory is dictating his story to someone.

So what is the Infinite Plan after all? Well, the idea emanated with Gregory's father, who seems to have made it up himself or maybe had a revelation, and it has to do with an Afterlife, and living on earth in accord with the Afterlife, the Infinite Plan encompassing both.

I don't know that there was really an Infinite Plan in the way these people weave in and out of each other's lives, but that's probably Sra. Allende's point: there is no Plan.

I had the pleasure of reading this book in Spanish, although some of the vocabulary did escape me. It was to Sra. Allende's Infinite Credit that her Spanish is so clear that someone like me, just a learner, could understand most of it and get the gist of the story.

This is one of Allende's only books that take place in the United States, and it really is amazing how she learned everything that was going on during the 1960s and 1970s around Los Angeles and Berkeley and San Francisco, as well as Viet Nam. Either she is a very experienced person or she had some good informants. I am limited in knowing little of her biography, but I intend to learn more.

The only thing that some readers may not enjoy about Allende's style is that she tends to write with lengthy and involved paragraphs, with very little conversation. If you're used to James Patterson or some of the other American writers who give us short little chapters with lots of dialogue, you may find Allende's writing too heavy.

But it's worth the effort. I recommend it. Diximus.

2 out of 5 stars Not really that good .......2006-11-16

"The Seduction of an English Lady" was the second book I have read by Cathy Maxwell and it wasn't that good.
Lady Rosalyn is the daughter of a dead poor earl. Colin Mandland is a war hero who has now come home. Colin now owns Rosalyn's home and want a seat in Commons, so what does who do? He marries her.
This book is not that great! The characters are very uniteresting and Key details of the book are left out. All I can say is that I am glad that I did pay for it.

            2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2006-08-04

Maxwell's writing is very elementry. There is no substance to her books, it feels like a debut novel even tho she is considered a seasoned author. Rosalyn was an annoying character with too much pride. Why is that always the reason behind romance novels? I felt the story was thrown together with no depth to any character. Rosalyn was a pathetic woman who was afraid to show her feelings because her mother left. And then instantly she does a one eighty. Oh please.Colin's character is alittle better but there is no background to the story or people. He was just cardboard image. There is no story here. No depth. No true love. I felt the author wrote what I what expected but I never felt anyhting for the story or the characters that were portrayed. I have tried this author in the past and she seems to fail on all levels of romance for me.

            1 out of 5 stars RIDICULOUS........2006-04-29

I hate to write such a rude review, but this book was absurd. The hero was such a baby...crying about his lost Commons seat, crying about his lack of knighthood, crying about his family guilt, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. Give me the strong, silent type any day over this emotional mess of a man.

The heroine had great, very real issues that I thought were nicely addressed. However, her "does he love me or not?" got really old, really fast.

The storyline with the fox was ABSURD. I could not have cared less about that fox and I cannot believe so much of the book was devoted to it. Between that and that stupid oratory contest, I just skimmed the last part of the book. It was so ridiculous, I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Definitely DO NOT recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars LIGHT READ. FEEL GOOD ENDING..........2004-06-05

Colonel Colin Mandland has lead men in to battle and earned their loyalty, so how hard could it be to persuade the occupant of the Mansion he just bought to leave?

Lady Rosalyn occupies Maiden Hill. Those living in the Valley fear her and do what ever she says, just to keep the peace.

Absolutely engaging and truly delightful, _The Seduction of an English Lady_ is the kind of romance that leads its readers into a relationship, but doesn't leave them dredging through bickering and misunderstandings. From page one, emotions are stirred and characters evolve. The secondary characters are just as important to the storyline as Colin and Rosalyn. It's through them the couple learns the truth about themselves and each other. It's a quick, light read with a feel good ending. The kind I highly recommend.

Not my favorite Cathy Maxwell book. The protagonists are pleasing enough, but their fussing over the house becomes old, but their growing feelings for each other carry the story along as do Colin's political ambition and their struggles with their families. The house itself is nothing but a device, really.

The book is pleasant enough, but not nearly as engaging as Maxwell's usual fare, and there is something about it that almost seems unfinished. Thus, it is merely okay.

                  Book Description

With his first international bestseller, The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle introduced a simple and profound view of enlightenment, inviting seekers of every faith, age, and culture to enjoy the fullness of life through living in the present moment.

Now this unique voice in contemporary spirituality explores our highest purpose in life - and how meditation can help us attain it - with The Realization of Being.

"Words are useful signposts," Eckhart begins, but our main spiritual teacher is stillness. This powerful energy field is always available to us through meditation. In simple language he explains how to "listen with your entire body," while working with the body, mind, and attention in order to "merge with this moment." As we go beyond the need for thought, he teaches, we achieve the meditative state of "no mind" or "presence" that is effortless, joyful, and natural. Through this timeless path we merge with the universal purpose, and become a divine presence.

A revolution in human consciousness has already started, teaches Eckhart Tolle. We can advance this revolution - now - with the help of The Realization of Being.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, took me a few years to get it........2005-12-17

I bought this years ago off Amazon, listened to it and thought it was just OK.

Since first listening to it I have read lots and lots and lots as well as listened to many different teachers. And it is only now that I am begining to appreciate how good this CD is.

Eckhart gently transports you into your own being, with much warmth and humour in the process.

                  Really nice.

5 out of 5 stars As always, Eckhart's work is wonderful!!!.......2003-04-02

You will not only feel your own presence but that of Eckhart's. This man's energy alone shifts you into your own being.
If you're sensitive you'll really know it. If you're not then this CD will help you to start to be.
                  I highly recommend this CD.
Eckhart is a wonderful teacher. I urge you to let him be your teacher to.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best presentation of Eckhart's ideas.......2002-11-25

I bought the "Power of Now" a few months ago and, of course, Amazon[.com] made note of it in their database. But that's a GOOD thing because they recently notified me about Eckhart Tolle's new offerings: "The Realization of Being" - and - "Even the Sun Will Die"

I loved "The Power of Now" - a book, I feel, EVERYone would benefit from owning and reading time and time again. (A helpful practice until you 'get it' and can apply the concepts, his teachings to your daily life)

And because I enjoyed this book so much, I went ahead and ordered both of the reccomended tapes (actually, CDs).

"Even the Sun Will Die" is a beautiful work of art - and, like "The Power of Now" - is something you can (and WILL) listen to over and over and over again. DEFINITELY worth owning!

But "The Realization of Being" was a BIG disappointment. No, wait - A HUGE disappointment! ! !

It's obvious this particular CD is a recording of a workshop he gave somewhere, at some time - and that's all fine and good EXCEPT - it's like the workshop was a 4 hour event - and this tape only gives you hours # 2 and 3. So, you 'come in late' (and have to play catch-up) - and then the second CD bails out without a proper closing. Heck, you even hear Eckhart say on the tape: "We're going to take a lunch break now." - and then, that's it!

So, after thoroughly enjoying "The Power of Now" and "Even the Sun Will Die" - you can imagine how let-down I felt after hearing this "haphazardly thrown together piece of mish-mosh".

Eckhart's a fine man - one of the folks who'll definitely lead us into the new era of unconditional love and peace - but this particular tape (as far as I'm concerned) is an embarrasment - and truly NOT the way to present the views and guidance of such a talented soul.

                  5 out of 5 stars Pure Power.......2002-08-08

This CD set deserves 10 stars. I play it again again and always hear something new. It's an essential companion to The Power of Now tapes (which I transferred to CD).

The meaning of life, the secret of happiness and lasting inner peace are all here for the taking. If only my ego would let me take it all in. In the meantime, I'll keep listening.

                  Thank you, Eckhart!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, exremely peaceful........2002-05-30

I really enjoyed this cd. This is really enjoyable and interesting. I liked the simplicity of the message to live in the now through silence and awareness of your own being. There is so much value in this cd.

What makes a dish chili? Can there really be 80 distinct versions of this much-loved dish, and all without the meat? For Robertson, any stew-like dish qualifies as chili if it is made with chili powder and includes some combination of cumin, oregano, tomatoes, beans, onions, and garlic. She offers enough variety in this modest, clearly written book that you could make dozens of her recipes and easily tell them apart. To vary her creations, Robertson uses different kinds of beans and lentils. She also calls for soy and other meat alternatives, such as seitan, the chewy, low-fat food made from wheat protein.

Robertson invents unexpected combinations, like Jamaican Jerk Chili, made with tempeh, a kind of fermented soybean cake, with allspice and oregano, plus a shot of rum. Spicy Apple Raisin Chili, a sweet, mild dish made with apple juice, cinnamon, and brown sugar, is an extremely daring recipe to say the least, and may not appeal to everyone. Hot-heads will like the collection of superincendiary chilis. They are made with four tablespoons of a generously cayenne-spiked chili powder that Robertson has you make from scratch. A jug of water is recommended to accompany these chilis!

Most of the recipes are easily put together, including the basic chili powder, which uses only ground chiles, cumin, and oregano, and skips the bitter dried garlic and salt that mars commercial brands. The Vegetarian Chili Cookbook is a deliciously different book. --Dana Jacobi

                  Book Description

Today, when millions of households contain--and almost any party will include--both vegetarians and meateaters, vegetarian chili takes away the guesswork: it's robust enough for carnivores, and it's sure to please vegetarians. Robin Roberston serves up a tasty invitation to discover how surprisingly versatile this timeless favorite can be. From mild concoctions suitable for fussy kids to five-alarm conflagrations for committed chileheads, these recipes are brimming with creative ideas and satisfying flavors.

5 out of 5 stars Proof that You don't have to have Meat in Chili for it to be Divine.......2006-10-12

The Vegetarian Chili Cookbook is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use. We have chili a lot in our house and both my Dad and my Mama have their favorite ways of cooking it. I grew up with their recipes and I have documented them in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides" and I hope you take a look at it. Both recipes are delicious, but when you've had them as often as I've had 'em, you sort of yearn for something a bit different. So, once a week, usually on Saturdays, I break out these ten books and search for a chili recipe I either haven't tried, or one I haven't made in a long time. Of course, like all cooks, I fudge a bit with the ingredients, but not all that much. I like to stick pretty close to the recipes, at least the first few times I make it, so I can get an idea of what the writer/recipe maker had intended.

And let me tell you, you'd be surprised at the subtleties there are in a chili recipe. As they say, no two chile recipes were created equal, but the recipes in The Vegetarian Chili Cookbook have never let me down. I've got a lot of chili books, have tried a lot of recipes over the years, but the recipes here, like the recipes in my other nine fave books, have been consistently good. You can't go wrong with The Vegetarian Chili Cookbook.

                  5 out of 5 stars Delicious!!.......2003-11-23

This is such a great book - prior to "going Veg" a few years ago I had a great chili cookbook that was similar to this but with meat all throughout When I first decided to stop eating meat etc I went in search of a new chili cookbook and came across this one and have loved it ever since. There are classic chili recipes from the tex/mex style to different types that are more like veg etable stews to chilis that use ingredients like coffee/wines/tequilla/beer etc. There's a chapter n really spicy chilis and there's a neat chapter on things to do with chili leftovers. I've been really happy with each ofthe recipes I've tried. I have a hard time just sticking to the recipe (love to play/invent in the kitchen) and this book has lots of ideas to draw upon for that purpose as well. There are chilis with beans, chilis with tempeh, chilis with textured soy, etc. The recipes have fun facts about chili sprinkled in and there's even a recipe for homemade chili podwer. The ingredients are integresting and flavorful throughout. Definitely a 5 star cookbook for those with a hunger for chili!

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Delicious and Inventive.......2000-04-27

Simple, Delicious and Inventive. What more can you want from a cookbook! Chili is great work-day meal in the sense that it is one-dish, it reheats well, freeze well, and it actually tastes better on 2nd, or 3rd day!

This book opens my eyes on the ingredients that can go into a chili pot: orange, apple, raisin, tequila ...etc. If you think chili all tasts the same, try this book. It is also healthful. Every recipe uses about 1 TB of olive and that's it! And trust me, you won't even care the chili is not fatty, because it tastes so good. I am actually not a vegetarian. So when I have left-over meat, I jump them in the chili pot. No problem.

Most of all, this book is E-Z. Every recipe may have a long list of ingredients (mostly spices), but to cook it is pretty much: dump everything in, stir, and walk away.

Although not the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book has more than paid for itself in helping me to decide whether or not to purchase pieces of antique silver that I might encounter while shopping the flea markets and antique shops or surfing on eBay. The small size makes it convenient to stick in your pocket or purse. There is an emphasis on Georgian silver and it is jam packed with important facts and clear color photos to give you a lot of pertinent information. I do have one major complaint. It does not contain a guide to English hallmarks in order to date silver. I suppose they left this out because they sell a similar pocket book containing that information. Other than that major goof this is probably the best little take with book on silver you can find.

                        Book Description

White Hot showcases the work of a colorist at the top of her form, here working in a calm, cool, contemporary palette, with infusions of jewel-like color.

For the past 25 years, Tricia Guild's bold use of vibrant, saturated color has kept her on the cutting edge of interior design. In White Hot, Tricia shifts her focus, bringing her talent as a colorist to whites and neutrals, with occasional infusions of intense color. Here, Tricia's revolutionary approach to color and space centers on creating serene and harmonious enclaves, while the lush photography further illustrates how light, patterns, shape, and, texture combine to create intriguing variations in tones and hues. More than ever before, we see how Tricia works: the process by which a combination of green and lilac glimpsed in a house in India can become the inspiration for an entire interior. By including color breakdowns at the end of each chapter, she also highlights how the lessons of nature can be translated into tangible design principles. A richly inspiring source of design ideas, White Hot is illustrated with 250 luminous color photos of interiors and details.
