Book Description
In Josh Emmons's inventive and utterly engaging debut, ten residents of Eureka, California, are brought together by a mysterious man, Leon Meed, who repeatedly and inexplicably appears -- in the ocean, at a local rock music club, clinging to the roof of a barreling truck, standing in the middle of Main Street's oncoming traffic -- and then, as if by magic, disappears.
Young and old, married and single, punk and evangelical, black, white, and Korean, each witness to these bewildering events interprets them differently, yet all of their lives are changed -- by the phenomenon itself, and by what it provokes in them. And whether they in turn stagger toward love, or heartbreakingly dissolve it, Emmons's portrayal of their stories is strikingly real and emotionally affecting.
Customer Reviews:
anyone, any time........2006-11-08
Emmons' novel, it's true, has a broad cast of characters, but each is so well characterized that they are easily distinguished from each other if the reader is willing to actually read the words on the page.
Each character has a vivid and distinct character from the next, lending the book a variety and scope that is sure to entrance the reader! And, accordingly, each character understands the mysterious appearances and disappearances of Leon Meed in their own appropriate way.
This book is a delightful read; it was great to curl with in bed and yet it also grabbed my attention mid-afternoon. It's an any time, any person kind of a novel, and those don't come along often!
Good casual read........2006-06-16
If your someone with a limited attention span seeking a good casual read this is for you. Yes, there is a larger cast of characters under the protagonist, and it does take a while to sort out who is who. However the characters share an indirect connection to eachother so it makes it easier to identify them. Each of the passages are short and distinctly marked so it makes it easy to leave and come back. The book is divided into three sections further simplifying the reading. It is an under the radar book from a new author and is original, well written, and flows like a swift cool creek in summer. The diverse characters, contemporary conflicts (i.e. homosexuality, redefining of family, and addiction problems), attention to setting, macabre plot, make this work a good example of contemporary Americana. It does not follow the trend of many contemporary Americana works, crappy writing pretending to be good. It is a book you only have to read once, so its better to get it from a library. I look forward to reading more from this author.
For every contrived phrase there are three remarkable ones.......2006-02-09
I should have hated this book. I lived in Eureka for 16 formative years. I graduated from the same high school as the author, and too aspire to write novels, none of which have, as yet, made it to paper much less shelf.
Like is not strong enough a word to describe my admiration for this work (though Love is admittedly too strong -- and too gay). This book is at once intriguing in its American everytown/no-town details and with its able determination to enthrall the reader with a delicately woven handful of characters, each despicable and attractive in his/her own unique way.
Shall I dare say it? I had trouble putting it down. Like many of the most memorable things experienced, it carefully avoided bashing me over the head with anything (moral, meaning, false profundity), and instead rang true with sincerity.
And sincerity does not come easily.
Confusing.......2006-01-23
I found the characters difficult to distinguish. There were so many characters that I got confused. Most of them were not distinctive enough to be remembered, so I kept having to go back and see which character I was reading about. Eventually, I gave up and could not finish the book. It was too much effort. The writing was fine, but certainly not captivating.
Loved this book.......2006-01-19
I had difficulty putting this book down. As someone who grew up in Eureka, I was impressed with how Josh Emmons was able to capture the essence of the town, of Humboldt County and in general of the lost coast of California. For those not familiar with the area, you will feel like you've been there after reading this book. Each character was a true representation of the odd mix of people one can find in this strange town in one of the most beautiful places in California. I couldn't wait to find out what was next in store for each character as I turned the pages.
Lines like "it was 4:30 and Barry was not gay" - to describe a young man at the cusp of admitting his homosexuality to himself - were constantly popping up in this book. The writing is fresh and takes chances.
Loved it.

Book Description
The Holy Grail -- is it the key to a miracle ... or a terrifying truth?
The Great Wall of China, the immense carvings on Easter Island, Egypt's pyramids, UFOs. What is the chilling connection? The answer, unearthed by an elite band of soldiers and scientists based at Area 51, is rewriting human history -- to include the aliens who shaped it!
Now, in this heart-pounding novel, Area 51 personnel embark on a top secret search for the Holy Grail, a glittering artifact with the power to save the world ... or lead to its destruction.
Special Forces officer Mike Turcotte has paid his dues in battle and in blood. Now assigned to Area 51, he fights the toughest enemy of his career: the alien race who arrived on earth millennia ago and have returned to claim the planet.
Mike has dodged bullets and faced weapons of mass destruction to give humanity another day of reprieve. But when his lover, scientist Lisa Duncan, falls into evil hands, Mike must decide which prize means the most to him -- the woman he loves or the legendary Grail. It's a decision that could damn him ... or damn us all.

Things are getting better.......2005-05-02
I have read all the books of area 51 except for the one that speaks about the humans on the other planet, (the one from where dunkan came).
An what I am going to write goes for all of them.
I would say that in this volume things started getting better, I mean Robert and in the previous ones shows his extrem love for the technical terms (turcote used the NSA linked to his GPS to get the ABC rader signal to talk to the FBIA using the KJH in the UYR after reciving a phone call via the HBS satalite from the MIDC team . . . . .) really it was too much in the books before this one. And also he is welling to spend two or three pages to explain how a techincal device work even if it was a night vision device, or explain all the parts of the special uranium gun used by the TASK force that was going to infiltrate the Peramid. While as a reader I do not care about these things. But it seems that robert could no get off his militray history and that he feels the urg to explain those technical stuff (the vibrating arm and the spring and the retraction) to every one so they can apprciate the technology although those details are not so important in such novels.
now althoug sometimes these things help to build a visual understanding of what is happening however in general it is a waste of pages.
Doherty also has this habbit of iterating and repeating the same stuff alot. For example in most of the time that he mentions the name of the chines professor he has to say that she was the one who opened Artad sleeping place (EVERY TIME), Think about it how many times did the writer say the Artad's people are called the ones who wait and aspsia's people are called the mission, I am sure at lest 1 thousand time. Another example is about turcote bombing the mother ship and killing aspasia (again hundereds of times repeated) It is as if the writer is assuming that with each new paragraph a new person will be reading and not the same person. I say this because I started reading the grail and then excalibur first (the first ones I got) so when I Was reading the mission and the reply and area 51 in general I had the feeling that I know most of what is going to be written because robert kept touching on the same events in all the books. Thus taking out the suspention and the fun out of it.
Another point I noticed is the contradictory of some facts.
For example when the mother ship was nuked, I was under the impression that Aspisa saw the bomb before it went on, However in another place it shows that Artad found Aspasia attached to the command seat of that mother ship, so how it happened.
however the idea is geniun and for that I give 3 starts

Area 51: The Grail is a military suspense novel written by Robert Doherty. In Area 51: The Grail, the fifth book out of the Area 51 series, Mike Turcotte is on a quest to save the human race from an alien civil war. Area 51 is a secret military outpost inside Groom Mountain, Nevada. The aliens, the Airlia, are from the distant past, when Atlantis was thriving. This time, Mike Turcotte and the Airlia are racing to find the Holy Grail. The Grail was said to have mythical powers. Anyone who drinks from it becomes immortal. As Mike gets close to finding the Grail, Lisa Duncan, his love, finds it first, inside the Ark of the Covenant. Lisa opens the Ark and takes a drink from the Grail and becomes immortal.
Mike's travels lead him to Mount Sinai, but the Airlia is already there. Mike gets inside the mountain and finds Lisa hostage by the Airlia leader. One of the soldiers shoots Lisa to kill the leader. Lisa is brought back to Area 51, where she is presumed dead, but she sits up on the table with a hole in her stomach. The Airlia escape with the Grail.
I liked this book because it suggests that the some of the items thought to be mythical, such as King Arthur's Excalibur, could actually be real, just waiting to be found. This gives hope to some people who have none.

Do not forget: it is fiction!.......2002-10-08
The speed in the plot becomes faster and faster and at the end we do not know any more which character is working for or against the Airlia and if, on which side they are. This series is so intelligently made because it "logically" explains events and myths that have long been enigmas in history, modern or ancient. Myths of the Bible, historical events of ancient Egypt and the statues on Easter island are interwoven with events of our modern times like Mallory's and Irvine's disappearance during their attempt to climb Mount Everest in the 1920s. This is the stuff aficionados of this kind of literature really like. But lets not forget - it is fiction, although you sometimes forget it while reading.
The Area 51 series stumbles but races ahead.......2002-06-28
This fifth book in the Area 51 series keeps the series moving at a thrilling pace and kept my rapt attention from start to finish, but the storyline itself does show some frays around the edges. While a lot of things go on simultaneously in different parts of the globe, not a whole heck of a lot seems to happen overall. The newfound reliance of the heroes upon a book written over a hundred years ago serves to slow the story down and make it less believable, and I was disappointed to see a potentially shocking ending sabotaged by a somewhat familiar ruse--it is as if the author chickened out at the last minute from following through on a bold, brave idea. Of course, the addition of King Arthur, Merlin, and the Holy Grail to the storyline fuels the fire of my interests to solar proportions. Some readers may be somewhat disappointed because this book, even more than its predecessors, seems to focus on laying out the groundwork for what is to come later--while I myself was enthralled to see the mystery and complexity of the storyline wratcheted up even higher, some may expect to have a few answers rather than more and more questions by this point in the series. Certainly, everything looks set to explode in the next novel because all of the pieces now seem to be in place for the long hinted-at global conflict between humanity and the alien Airlia. So many questions have been posed so far, it may take at least two more books just to answer them all. If you've read this far into the series, you are in it for the long haul, and we can only hope that the author is able to eventually give us a conclusion worthy of all of this intense buildup. I am still excited about this series, intrigued by some of the little hints and clues that have been dropped along my path, and more than ready to dive into the sixth book.

Book Description
Letters to Marc About Jesus is a beautiful collection of Henri Nouwen's very intimate and very enlightening writings to Marc, his nineteen-year-old nephew, who struggles to find his true path in a world of confusion and apathy. Written with Nouwen's characteristic grace and wisdom, these letters bear witness to his conviction that anyone can find lasting spiritual fulfillment if they simply take the time to maintain a daily awareness of Jesus in every aspect of life. Powerful and profound, Letters to Marc About Jesus is Nouwen at his best--teacher, guide, and mentor--and will provide the direction and inspiration necessary for any believer to change his or her life.
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Nouwen.......2005-05-20
I thoroughly enjoyed The Return of the Prodigal, but Letters to Marc about Jesus has replaced TRotP as my favorite by Nouwen. Every chapter begins slowly and personally, but there are segments within the chapters that are as piercing and insightful as my favorite CS Lewis excerpts. The chapter on Jesus: The Loving God is a great example, as I think Nouwen captures, in a well-written and succinct nutshell, both the problem with and the solution to the world as we generally know it. I don't think he set out to solve the world's problems, nor do I think it's easy to do so. But, as Chesterton said: I am (the problem with the world); and this chapter by Nouwen explains precisely why I am the problem. This one, like the best by Lewis, deserves reading and re-reading. It is devotional and challenging at the same time.
Letters to Marc about Jesus.......2000-06-29
Though written to a ninteen year old nephew, this book is for any youth or adult. The book centers on Jesus as God's revelation to man and how to personally experience being a disciple of Jesus. Each letter grows out of Nouwen's personal walk and experience during a year of searching for God's direction for himself. Each letter has truth that makes you ask 'why haven't I seen that before.' This is a five star book; a book to be re-read and turned to often for it's refreshing ideas. Persons reading Letters to Marc may also want to read Philip Yancy's What's So Amazing About Grace.

Halloween plastics are one of the fastest growing areas for collectors. Items from the 1940s and the 1950s are quickly gaining value, now matching the prices brought in by papier-mch, metal, celluloid, and bisque items. This book gives an overall historic perspective of the Halloween collectibles field, 372 color pictures from many collections, has a price guide, and shows you how to judge plastics quality and tell old from new. Plastics collectors have needed a guide like this since many Halloween collectibles made in Hong Kong and China tend to be confusing.

Wonderful layout. The pictures are clear and spaced beautifully on the pages. Each item is focused on rather than overlaid with others. The information is concise. A number of heretofore unseen items in other Halloween collectibles books. It is possible to go through the book over and over again and still be impressed by the pictures. A lovely pictoral history of plastic Halloween objects.

HOW WOMEN SPOKE THROUGH THEIR QUILTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD.......2003-09-14
My husband purchased this book for me and WOW! It is packed with information regarding the common bond that women had in fellowshipping, politicking, raising money for war efforts, changing society, gaining strength to have a voice, comforting others ...all through their domestic art of quilting. A must for quilters and for anyone who has a tendency to believe that domesticity disables one from being active to change society for the good of everyone!
Interesting for all - not just women or quilters.......2002-06-21
Before I bought the book I saw the video three times. When I was watching it at home, one by one my family sat down and joined me. The panoramic view of American history through the quilts the women made from the Revolutionary War up through the 1800s was fascinating and touching. An excellent video and an excellent book.
Hearts and Hands.......2001-09-13
I used the accompanying video in a workshop I taught at the University level. What a heartwarming and accurate trip through womens' history, linking us to them through a common craft. The book successfully informs us of their political and social challenges as we view the gorgeous creations of their hands. The music score is vital to portraying the feeling, as well, and is perfect to the subject.
I recommend viewing the video for any who are interested in womens' history or in the folkart of quilting.
American Women "Revealed" through their Quilting.......1999-07-08
The story of how women used quilts not only as bedcoverings, but as mementos of their friends, artistic expressions in bleak lives, political commentary when they didn't have the vote, fundraising, slogan flags--more ways than imagined! Quilts were even considered a symbol of women's repression at one time! An interesting slant on the role of women in American history (the keepers of morality!). Excellent pictures, great inspirations, and lots of fun! This book was the reference basis for the book and movie "How to Make an American Quilt."

Very interesting to a new quilter.......1999-04-23
I found this book at our library and was interested immediately. I was glad to read some history on an age long craft. All women of their time told a story by the quilts they made. This book did a good job of describing some of these guilts, and the journey they have been on. It is a very important part of our history that needs to be told.

Book Description
Intelligent Buildings provide stimulating environments for people to work and live in and operate with systems that provide communications and conveniences for various functions to take place, however society and building owners or tenants demand more than this. Buildings are long-term assets so need to be economical, durable, flexible, adaptable and sustainable. There are many stakeholders involved in the process of building a new intelligent building or updating an old one. There is also a need to recognize the pace of change not only in technology but also in society. Intelligent Buildings must demonstrate whole life value. This means an integrated team approach to design, construction and facilities management is essential if a comprehensive set of performance measures are to be implemented and achieved. Written by a collection of prominent figures, this book brings together a body of the latest knowledge about design, management, technology and sustainability set against a background of developments in the cultural landscapes, which affect those living and working in buildings. This book will appeal to architects, engineers, practitioners and all stakeholders who are involved in promoting, designing, constructing or operating buildings. This will include building owners and clients as well as facilities managers and those who design and construct buildings. It will also serve as a reference text for students in architecture, building environmental engineering and other courses concerned with the built environment.

Book Description
Though George Grove, 1820-1900, was never a professional musician, his is one of the most familiar names in music: as founder of the great Dictionary of Music and Musicians that bears his name and first director of the Royal College of Music. This book surveys his varied activities as engineer, biblical scholar, administrator, educationalist, and writer on music, and assesses the qualities that led him to play a major role in the cultural life of London in the period 1850-1900.
