Book Description

Iry Paret's done his time -- two years for manslaughter in Louisiana's Angola State Penitentiary. Now the war vet and blues singer is headed to Montana, where he hopes to live clean working on a ranch owned by the father of his prison pal, Buddy Riordan. In prison, Iry tinkered with a song -- "The Lost Get-Back Boogie" -- that never came out quite right. Now, the Riordan family's problems hand him a new kind of trouble, with some tragic consequences. And Iry must get the tune right at last, or pay a fateful price.

4 out of 5 stars Skip the last chapter, and you're golden........2006-09-29

It's been twenty years since James Lee Burke's THE LOST GET-BACK BOOGIE first saw print, and it hasn't lost an ounce of impact in all that time. The man's writing talent never ceases to amaze me.

Iry Paret, just out of Angola Prison for manslaughter, heads for Montana and the safe refuge and a job promised by a prison pal and fellow musician, Buddy Riordan. What Buddy has neglected to mention is significant: his father has filed a lawsuit and an injunction against one of the largest companies in town, and that lawsuit has the potential to put an awful lot of people out of work.

As with just about any James Lee Burke novel, one can see the train wreck coming. We know it won't be pretty. Burke is such a compelling writer that one keeps reading anyway, no matter how ugly it gets. Yes, Burke writes with great love and subtlety about the beauty of Montana or the ugliness of Angola. But it's his characters that keep drawing us back into the novel. They are so very human, and make such bad choices, choices that we as readers want to tell them to avoid . . . but they don't. Because they are so truly real.

I must say that the final chapter was something of a disappointment, and certainly not what I expected, based on all the other Burke novels I've read. Skip it, and the book is worth every minute spent reading it.

5 out of 5 stars terrific early James lee Burke thriller .......2006-03-01

Korean War veteran turned country-and-western musician Iry Paret spent a couple of years in Angola for manslaughter. He survived prison by staying on lethal alert knowing that the guards and the inmates are dangerous to anyone who depends only on hope, prayer, or drugs. Upon his release, Iry heads to New Orleans where he plans to play the honky tonk and drown his life with alcohol.

However, the haze of drink does not keep Iry from feeling depressed. He concludes he needs to leave Louisiana if he to get back his lost boogie. He treks to Milltown, Montana near Missoula where his jazz playing former cell mate Buddy Riordan's father Frank owns a ranch by the Bitterroot River. Once there, he observes Buddy is always on LSD while Frank wars with the local pulp mill that is polluting the area. However, Iry finds himself attracted to Buddy's slightly overweight estranged wife, Beth, who wants both men to go straight, drop the drugs and booze and stay out of Frank's war. Iry can do two out of three, but feels obligated to be at Frank's side as David's sidekick against the goliath lumber companies.

This is a reprint of a terrific early James lee Burke thriller that brings to life the 1960s through mostly the downtrodden Iry. Frank, Buddy and Beth are fabulous support characters who enable the audience to understand what motivates the lead protagonist. With the backdrop of development vs. environment debate before Nixon established EPA, fans obtain a fabsulous thriller wondering which side the antihero will join.

4 out of 5 stars Expanded my horizons.......2005-06-11

The novel is told entirely from the point of view of its protagonist, who epitomizes the US western hero: good with guns, in love with the outdoor life, a big drinker and bar room dweller, but very decent. While he wouldn't provoke a fight, he won't back down from one, no matter the cost. He happens to be from the South, but moves to Montana, depicted as a land of great beauty, but under the thumb of companies destroying the environment. The novel and character grew on me: while manly, he is also reflective, and a musician to boot. Burke relies on very fine detail, more than metaphor and analogy, to get his descriptions across. Perhaps because the closest I normally get to Western literature is Larry McMurtry, but I felt this book really expanded my horizons with its insight into an important sub-culture

3 out of 5 stars Not his best!.......2003-03-01

I have read nearly every thing that James Lee Burke has written. I like and admire his use of descriptive words. This book, however, was not nearly as good as his Dave Robicheaux books. His discriptions were just as poetic, his intensity just as good, but I guess I just didn't like the story as much and couldn't relate to the characters as well as with his other books. But it was an interesting read and if you are a Burke fan, I would recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Burke's drama better than mystery, but plot still weak.......2003-01-12

This book reminds us of what in music is called a "tone poem". The melodies and harmonies swirl in an entertaining, sometimes captivating, pattern; but when it's all over, it doesn't amount to much that's memorable. We wanted to read this novel to possibly cure ourselves of our disappointment with one of Burke's Dave Robicheaux mysteries. Our findings of that one ("Cadillac Jukebox") was that his imagery surely is vivid, but his skills in developing the plot and populating it with just the right number of support characters were lacking. That tends to kill a mystery, which after all must have a story with a somewhat logical structure.

In "Boogie", we do feel the drama category works better for Burke. The mind pictures he draws, especially of the Montana landscape where leading man Iry heads after getting a parole transfer out of his native Louisiana, continue to exhibit's Burke's mastery of descriptive prose. Alas, the plot is still not as strong as we might like, although the sheer drama of his story doesn't require the pace and form of a mystery. We found it difficult to empathize with the beer-swilling, guilt-laden brawlers generally depicted herein. But get by the alcohol content, and there is on display a fair degree of understanding the human condition. Interesting that this book was both nominated for a Pulitzer after publication, but (according to Burke's own web site) was rejected first by over 100 publishers!

After we read the Robicheaux book, we opined: Burke is probably better at drama, and he is. We think he might excel at poetry -- wonder if he's ever tried his hand at that? As with the musical counterpart, we probably wouldn't remember his "melody and harmony" per se, but would settle for the slide show he can create with words to go with our coffee and red wine.

Wonderful characters, great love story if there is a real Shiloh Harper type guy down there in the bayou I would love to meet him. This story stands on its own and is better than the prequel. (I did not really get into it)
I like romance books with at least a hint of realism in the plot and even tho this all takes place in 3 months I did enjoy it, especially the handcuff scene - so sweet, romantic and sexy!

3 out of 5 stars Lovers on the Move.......2006-08-02

Rochelle brings back unforgettable characters as well as introduces some new and exciting characters. Whoever thought that journalist Gwyn Taylor from Happily Ever After would move down south not only move down south but fall in love with a man from the south at that. This story is almost like a fair tale with a little suspense and a lot of action my only concern is if you are a Hideaway series reader that Rochelle wrote a few years back then this story should almost seem familiar if not the same. Both heroines are reporters, in the Cole series the hero was a doctor while in A Time To Keep the hero is a sheriff, they both take place in the Deep South, both heroines inherit houses they move from north to south, and they both meet their heroes in a time of distress. In the Hideaway Series, she freaks when the homeless man approaches her at the café and in A Time To Keep, the heroine gets stuck in a ditch.

Other than the minor repeat of the story line, the book was a decent read especially being able to read the starting story or the plot setter. I should say she did her usual when it came to the hero he was simply the bomb. Ms Alers has written many great books this one could have been a better book had it not been for the repeat of the past book but I will defiantly look forward to Aler's next book.

                4 out of 5 stars 2 for 1.......2006-07-23

You get two titles in one book that will keep you engaged. Both stories were wonderful and kept me up late every night until I completed the book. Mrs. Alers weaves two wonderful stories that are sure to keep you at the edge of your seat.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT with a double G.......2006-07-17

A Time To Keep has all you would want in a book. I laughed so hard at times I had to put it down. The only other words for this book is Ms. Alers "put her foot in this one". An excellent read when it comes to romance, mystery and who done it.

                5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2006-07-12

As usual, Rochelle Alers has worked her magic and created another masterpiece. The characters are exciting and inviting. Alers captures your attention and does not let it go. At the end of the story, you wish that there was still much, much, more!!!!

Nancy Kress ends her Beggars trilogy (which began with the novella later turned into a novel, Beggars in Spain) almost full circle from where it began. Against a backdrop where rich humans have themselves modified to perfection and poor, unmodified "Livers" eke out a nomadic existence, the genetically superior Sleepless have stopped distributing Change. Change is the miracle substance that prevents disease in all humans. In cutting off Change, the Sleepless have ignited a class war that will ultimately be resolved not by technology and science, but by the children of technology, who must live side-by-side despite their differences.

                Book Description

Nancy Kress, one of the leading writers of science fiction today, has written a number of provocative and award-winning stories and novels. But it is with the Beggars trilogy that she has reached the pinnacle of her success. Developed out of her Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novella, "Beggars in Spain," the trilogy was launched with Beggars in Spain (1993), also a Nebula nominee for best novel, and continued in Beggars and Choosers (1995). Both received widespread praise and unusual enthusiasm. Locus, for instance, referred to "the joy of reading a work of SF so intelligent, humane, involving, utterly genuine....magnificent," and went on to say, "It is Kress's brilliant achievement in Beggars and Choosers, that scientific progress and human idealism, the driving forces behind some of the best hard SF....,never leave behind the passionate muddle that is life......"Now the trilogy is completed in Beggars Ride, a compelling novel of science fiction that raises one of the most ambitious and large-scale works of the decade to the status of finished masterpiece. Kress, a writer who had been appropriately compared to H.G. Wells and Aldous Huxley, deals with evolutionary forces, genetic engineering, technological progress, and social and class conflict, confronting enduring issues that face human society in this century and the next. The Sleepless and the SuperSleepless, two generations of genetically modified superhumans, are now in conflict with each other, and with the spectrum of normal humanity, whose radical division into the rich and poor has made a parody of democracy in the twenty-second century. Human civilization has been transformed. Now it may be destroyed. And if it falls, what kind of world is left, what kind of humanity?Nancy Kress has written a work of fiction that culminates and brings to new fruition the Wellsian strain of SF invented a century ago.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe I should have read the other two books?.......2004-08-16

I picked up Beggar's Ride in a bookstore without noticing that it was book three of a trilogy. I'm usually a stickler for reading an author's books in the order they were written - even when they're unrelated. So, reading the third book in a trilogy without reading the first two is a stretch for me, but I did it. And, boy was I disappointed.

In my experience, you don't read later books first because, in an effort to make sure the reader knows what is going on, authors tend to give away important plot information from the first two books. Not this one! I managed to get through this book without truly understanding the sleepless, the super sleepless or anything about what motivated them. I learned nothing about the Change wars. While I could follow the plot of Beggars Ride reasonably well; without any information about the world it just wasn't very interesting.

The characters in Beggars Ride were, generally, not very interesting. In many cases, their motivations were incomprensible. The plot twists (which I won't reveal for those who still want to read this) felt like real cop-outs and the ending seemed more than a little unrealistic.

Since I didn't read the first two books in the trilogy, I'll give Ms. Kress the benefit of the doubt and give her two stars. But, really, all books should stand on their own. They should be better when read as a series, but comprehensible independently. Next time, if Ms. Kress can't be bothered to work the pertinent details into the story, maybe she should consider providing a written version of "previously on..."

                3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-06-07

I loved Beggars in Spain and have read it and the sequel, Beggars and Choosers, many times. However, this novel is a bad ending to the trilogy, mainly perhaps because my favorite character, Leisha Camden, was killed off in the second novel. Most of the characters are two-dimensional and unlikable, except for Lizzy, a throwback genius Liver who is doomed to a welfare existence.

                4 out of 5 stars DYSTOPIA a la carte.......2002-10-03

The Beggars Trilogy is a sordid tale depicting a drug addicted U.S. population a century into the future. The bio-engineered, genius tribe called the Sleepless decide to play god with the common man. They essentially turn man into plants. They used an injection of nanobots to grow a network embedded in man's skin- enabling him to feed from the soil as roots nourish a tree. Further, man's skin could also use photons like plants do in photosynthesis. How does that sound? The leitmotif reminds me of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. If in a century nanotechnology engulfs genetic engineering it appears the result shown in this book will be artificial life, not enriched life. Genius in this tale snuffs out both hope and free will. The Super sleepless had as much fear of innovation as the retarded sleepers. As both sides fought to retain the old and curtail the new, we are led to a total impasse. A snake swallowing its own tail.

This series is quite an undertaking. The craft of writing is mastered, the suspense sustained to the end, and lots of learning was dispensed on how the brain parts work. The question that must have kept cropping up with Ms. Kress was, "What do I do for an encore?" This confrontation with biogenetic engineering took the reader as deeply into dystopia as is inhumanly possible. Some of the characters actually evolved right out of the human race to become the Sleepless Masters who fortunately, it turned out, had an Achilles heel. The Sleepless saw themselves as gods to the unevolved human. When their plan went up in smoke not a tear was shed by the reader. Why not? Because here was a story of sex without joy, intelligence like dead AI, and spirituality without god. The trilogy spanned over a hundred years but where were the holidays, where was Easter and Christmas? It was bleak, bleaker and bleakest.

2 out of 5 stars Perfunctory writing suits unengaging characters.......2002-02-12

It's a credit to Nancy Kress's skill that she got me to read to the end of the book, though I think it might have been more a case of wanting to see the entire train wreck.

The Beggars World series started off with a simple premise that quickly got out of hand: people who don't need to sleep are...well, omnipotent supermen. Eh? Having written herself into a box, Kress keeps the Sleepless offstage for nearly the entire book, then dispenses with the problem entirely through a pair of perfunctory, Sterling-esque plot twists. It kills me that I can't reveal them. Suffice to say that they're logically implausible given the nature of the people they affect, as painstakingly delineated over the preceding hundreds of pages.

Fine. But who are the Emergency Backup Protagonists? We've met them before: whiney milquetoast-with-a-woody Jackson, his daffy sister, quasi-Hellbitch Vicki, and Certified Hellbitch Cazie. Oh, don't forget sooper-genius hacker Lizzie, who reverts to Liver speech, her, when under stress, notices, and then just keeps doing it, her. Gaak.

Well then. Maybe the overarching theme redeems the book. Why yes, it does: Feeling sad? Feeling blue? Turn that frown upside down and just whistle a happy tune! I can't imagine this book actually suggests that one can overcome crippling anxiety and depression by make-believe and goodthink, so I must have misunderstood this part.

Did I mention the whole series is set in one of the most numbingly unpleasant dystopias ever to grace the SF field? If you're going to go that route, you'd better give us characters that make us care, that engage our sympathy or outrage. But all the groups we meet--Livers, donkeys, Sleepless--are so thoroughgoingly repellent that you kind of wish the bad guys *would* win and exterminate the species already, so we can start over with monkeys or penguins or something.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Beggars series.......2001-11-19

I don't know what my fellow reviewers are smoking --this is definitely the best of the Beggars trilogy. Not that you can really read it apart from the rest of them; you really need all three to see how far Kress got with developing the Beggar-world, which started (in Beggars In Spain) like all good science fiction does, with a simple question: What if people didn't need to sleep anymore? And went on from there, sort of answering that question directly in BIS and more dealing with the ramifications of it in Beggars and Choosers and becoming more of an attempt to tap into the quasi-mystic Answering Big Questions vein of science fiction in Beggar's Ride. Her solution as I understand it is basically sort of a tempered enthusiasm for modern science: look outward, but don't forget to look inward as well. That's the best I can describe it without giving too much away. And I love the way how from book to book Kress has no problem moving on to new characters. The scientific denouement is at the end of BR is not the wow-shocker that concluded BIS and B&C, but I only enjoyed BR more for it, and for Kress's guts in not feeling like she had to blow up the Death Star to get her point across (though that happens too). Within the trilogy we go from a world from where some people can't sleep to one where everyone has to look within themselves for answers, and it's just amazing how we went from good honest hard SF to wonderful philosophical SF within these three books. The changes, and the way things changed, are amazing. Good good stuff.

                                    Book Description

Forgiveness: The word itself fills our hearts with peace and hope; yet, countless Christians are plagued by haunting feelings of inadequacy and guilt. While their heads tell them they are forgiven, their hearts cry out that they are guilty. This updated version of the previously published Forgiven Forever gets right to the heart of the questions that steal the joy God intends for our lives:

As Beam gently unmasks our fears, he shares biblical teachings that fill us with the peace we crave.

                                    Book Description

The popular New York Times columnist and award-winning, bestselling cookbook author Mark Bittman now shares his winning strategies for creating elegant, delicious dinner parties with no fuss. Famous as “the Minimalist” for delicious recipes that can be made in a flash, Bittman’s entertaining cookbook is a must-have for hosts and home cooks of all skill levels.

The book features more than 150 recipes in 40 menus organized by season. Bittman’s signature “Keys to Success” offer a wealth of tips, from choosing the best ingredients to improving and streamlining your cooking techniques. Invaluable “Timetables” break down the process of preparing the meal step-by-step, including what can be made ahead of time (the day before or even earlier) and—that most daunting of tasks for home cooks—how to make several recipes at once. The menus, which include recipes for starters, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts, as well as wine suggestions, are tailored for all kinds of parties—barbecues, buffets, picnics, sit-down dinners, cocktail fêtes, and even an indoor or outdoor clambake.

Each menu draws on the peak ingredients of the season as well as foods that are always readily available. Spring encompasses menus like A Tuscan-Style Meal (Pasta with Dark Red Duck Sauce, Cauliflower with Garlic and Anchovy, Olive Oil Cookies with Red Wine and Rosemary) and A Simple Spring Dinner (Pan-Roasted Asparagus Soup with Tarragon, Broiled Salmon with Beurre Noisette, Pan-Crisped Potatoes, Ricotta with Walnuts and Honey). Summer features Grilling, Asian Style (Soy-Dipped Shrimp; Grilled Skirt Steak with Thai-Style Sauce; Grilled Corn; Pineapple Ginger Sorbet) and A Cool Dinner for a Hot Night (Cold Pea Soup; Salted Watermelon, Thai-Style; Grilled Chicken, Sausage, and Vegetable Skewers; Lemon Granita).

For autumn, there’s A Cool-Weather Feast with Asian Flavors (Rich Chicken-Noodle Soup with Ginger; Broiled Bluefish or Mackerel with Green Tea Salt; Spareribs, Korean-Style; Herbed Green Salad with Soy Vinaigrette; Coconut Rice Pudding) and A Crowd-Pleasing Mexican Buffet (Shrimp “Seviche,” Fish Tacos with Fresh Salsa, Chicken Thighs with Mexican Flavors, Lime Granita).

When the weather turns wintry, try A Hearty Midwinter Sit-Down (Mushroom Barley Soup, Breaded Lamb Cutlets, Pilaf with Pine Nuts and Currants, Tender Spinach and Crisp Shallots, Maple Bread Pudding) or A Cocktail Party (Prosciutto, Fig, and Parmesan Rolls; White Bean Dip; Skewered Crisp Shiitakes with Garlic; Miso-Broiled Scallops; Fennel, Orange, and Apple Skewers).

Forget hard-to-find ingredients and hours in the kitchen. With The Minimalist Entertains, you’ll look like a five-star host but feel like a carefree guest.

1 out of 5 stars Worst cookbook ever.......2005-05-19

I made three of the dishes in this book--two were mediocre, and one was horrendous. I don't know if I dare try any more.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as his usual, still better than most cookbooks.......2003-07-30

Realistically, I wish I could give it three and a half stars. It's better than your average cookbook, but not as good as a *typical* Mark Bittman cookbook.

The strength of MOST of Mark Bittman's cookbooks is that they teach you *how* to cook by giving you tons of variation ideas on every recipe and lots of encouragement. They are good books to *read* and not just cook from. This book doesn't give you any variations at all, and little text. Instead, it gives you forty menus, and each menu consists of a short blurb, a few "keys to success", wine recommendations, a rough timetable, and the recipes.

The menus look pretty good, and are categorized by season. The recipes are pretty typical of his style - a few key ingredients, prepared simply, into a somewhat unusual finished dish. He writes in his intro that he keeps menus at a maximum of 2 complex dishes (and the others more simple or store bought, like good bread). I still find this too much when I entertain, especially for a crowd of 8.

I have to admit I'm not sold on the "menu" concept in general. I tend to enjoy doing this sort of planning myself - based on my own tastes, knowledge of my guests' tastes (vegans/non-spicy/no-fish/whatever) and my ability to juggle several courses in the kitchen while holding a coherent conversation with the guest that won't go mingle. I inevitably burn *something* at each dinner party. ;-)

I typically LOVE Mark Bittman books - I have the "Cooks Dinner" one, the "Cooks at Home" one, and "How to Cook Everything" which is in my opinion the most useful cook-book EVER. But this one isn't as good as the rest. I'm giving it 4 stars because the food still looks good, but I've cooked more from Ina Garten's "The Barefoot Contessa: Parties" more than I've cooked from this.

                                        Book Description

One of the key events marking the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the opening of the new Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace. To celebrate its inauguration and the Jubilee itself, Royal Treasures brings together over 450 of the most precious and unusual paintings, drawings, and works of art from the unparalleled Royal Collection. Held by the Queen in trust for Britain, the Royal Collection is one of the most important in the world. It contains paintings by the great masters such as Holbein and Van Dyck; original drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael; works of art by Fabergé and the great silversmiths of the eighteenth century; and the finest examples of English and European furniture, Oriental ceramics, sculpture, books and manuscripts, and arms and armor. Royal Treasures, with its lavish use of specially commissioned photography and detailed histories of each item illustrated, is a unique and irreplaceable record of the very best of this world-famous collection. The book also contains the intriguing story of the creation of the Royal Collection itself, and details the rebuilding of the Queen's Gallery, where these exceptional works of art will be on exhibit throughout the Jubilee year. With essays by Hugh Roberts, Christopher Lloyd, Jonathan Marsden, and David Watkin. Distributed on behalf of the Royal Collection. 450 color illustrations and photographs.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Publication.......2006-11-06

This book is so informative and visually appealing. The quality of photographs are superb not to mention the scholarly articles written by experts on the arts. This book covers a whole range of british royal collection: paintings, furniture, sculptures, armours, faberge, prints and manuscripts and jewels. It would have been perfect if tapestries were included in the book. Overall, this book is superb!!! it provides information not only on the collection style of english monarchs and consorts but also on the stories of each item in the collection. Great reading! This is a perfect addition to anyone interested in history, english royalty and mere fascination of all things beautiful.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Keeping.......2002-10-10

I bought this book as a keeper because I was told it was a pretty extensive offering of the collection. Yes, it is that but it is also beautiful laid out and with just enough text for the interested.

If you are looking for a book to educate you on the less seen objects of the collection this is the one to have. An excellent addition to a Buckingham Palace guide.

                                                            Book Description

Styles and lifestyles are fast becoming uniform under labels and definitions of fashion, and as an industry and a cultural form. Total Living is the point of no return in a project which, step-by-step, develops strategies whose goal it is to offer an even more sophisticated and targeted lifestyle. It is a place where there are definitions for clothes, behavior modes, and even the atmoshpheres and spaces in which one moves. Assuming the contours of a landscape of the future, this scenario raises topical themes and problems connected with the overwhelming power of consumerism. Accompanying scholarly essays consider the thematic universes of fashion designers and brands; models of total living in 20th century history; references to total living in mass culture; living and eating; arty fashion and fashionable art; the world of fashion design; the languages of shopping; urban fashion districts; and advertising as a narrative. A fabulously rich and interconnected iconographic passage visually narrates the various forms and ramifications of total living today and in the recent past through a succession of utopias, life-projects, urban visions, architecture, special homes, stores, art galleries, museums, and editorial pages and ads from fashion and lifestyle magazines. Total Living shows life for the show that it is--or has become. Published in collaboration with Pitti Immagine.

Inspite and not despite the cover this book is an innovative and artistic compilation of images meant to provoke critical thought and thinking. The cover is a brilliant documentary of the ever increasing blanket of uniformity or branding, labels and marketing. The cover provides minor shock value in good taste relative to much of what is used by advertisers today and is a preview as to the consumerist phenonema that you are drawn to conclude from making your own connections between related images that are placed in a seemingly random fashion throughout the first 350 pages of this book.

Entertaining and insightful if you are familiar with popular culture.
