Joanna Scott's richly imagined The Lucky Gourd Shop begins in America, where the adoptive mother of three Korean children tries to find out more about their pasts. But where she fails, we succeed; the rest of the novel takes us back a generation, to a South Korea ravaged by years of poverty and war. There we meet Mi Sook--orphan, independent spirit, and, as soon becomes clear, the children's birth mother. Found abandoned in an alley and raised like a stray in the back room of a coffee shop, Mi Sook grows up pretty, bubbly, and happy enough, but still "that rare creature in her society, one who did not draw her sense of self from fixed relationships with others." In South Korea, of course, to be without fixed relationships--to be without family--is to live in a dangerous limbo, and soon enough Mi Sook finds trouble. Throughout the events that follow, Scott's powerful narrative voice never fails to convince. In her telling, this is a story without villains; even the violent husband is no monster when we learn the intense economic and cultural pressures with which he struggles. More to the point, it's also a story without victims; as in all great works of literature, Scott's characters are made of flesh and blood, capable of agency and action and especially mistakes. This first novel succeeds on a number of levels, as an imaginative leap between nations and generations and as a snapshot of a culture in transition. Most of all, however, The Lucky Gourd Shop is a precise, affecting, and unsentimental portrait of Mi Sook herself, of hardships endured without knowing they're hardships and choices that are scarcely choices at all. --Chloe Byrne

Book Description

When an American mother's three adopted children reach their teens, they grow curious about their Korean heritage. A much-anticipated letter from Korea fails to satisfy them but sparks memories in the eldest. So begins the heartbreaking and inspiring tale of their birth mother's life as their adoptive mother imagines it. Abandoned as a baby and then again and again, Mi Sook is raised in a Korean coffee shop by its string of owner-mothers. She grows to adulthood fiercely independent and eventually comes to manage the shop. But her marriage to Kun Soo, with whom she has three children, begins a series of events that ultimately wrench her babies from her arms. Deceived by Kun Soo and his well-intentioned mother, and unsupported by a rigidly Confucian culture, Mi Sook emerges as a tragic and heroic figure who embodies the rich complexities of a nation -- and of the heart.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinarily well-written piece.......2002-08-29

Adoption is a two-headed coin -- tremendous joy but at someone else's sorrow.

Ms. Scott has taken the memories of her children, combined them with extensive research into the culture and socio-economics of Korea and written not simply a story but a complex profile of what I think is a not-so-untypical family.

It is a portrait of poverty, yes, but painted lovingly and yet without sentimentality. It is, I fear, a much truer face than we would like to see.

The first few pages moved me to tears - and I had to close the book. A few hours later, I picked it up again and read it straight through. I have not been able to stop talking about it ever since.

Mi Sook is a memorable character, and the grandmother's devotion and torment over deciding the fate of her grandchildren will haunt you. Even knowing the eventual outcome did not quell my thirst for more.

It was a wonderful read and I know it is a story that has touched my heart.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate the Child: Korea Books for Adults - review excerpt.......2002-07-22

In addition to telling a poignant story with restraint, The Lucky Gourd Shop gives the reader
insight into the dynamics of Korean culture and the intricacies of daily life after the war. The
personal relationships that it portrays make it a "must" for any reader who wants a very rich
and pleasant way to understand Korea. The literary skill demonstrated by the author elevates
The Lucky Gourd Shop above being just a good story. She weaves the motivations and
needs of the characters skillfully into a tapestry that makes each one sympathetic and easy to
identify with despite the significant distance from our personal experiences in the US.

5 out of 5 stars From Asian Review of Books book review.......2002-07-19

JOANNA CATHERINE SCOTT's knowledge of Korea is evident; the detail is both convincing and delicious to read. THE LUCKY GOURD SHOP describes rough lives but is gently written; the language, simple and lyrical, is as engaging as the story itself. It's wonderful to find a book that makes you want to find out what's next, to turn the pages until there are no more. This is one such story.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Ride!.......2007-10-10

As one of the reviews suggested, we bought this book before we took our kids on a driving trip to Colorado. It really made the whole idea of a driving vacation fun and an adventure for our children. It's one of our favorite bedtime stories. Not only do the kids recite all the rhymes by heart but it brings back memories of our own wonderful vacation!

    5 out of 5 stars I've been There!.......2007-02-05

What a cute book. It brought me back to my childhood where my siblings (3) and I piled in our Country Squire station wagon with a dog and a Grandma (not to mention 2 parents) and drove cross country. A must read for all kids who can't imagine driving to the grocery store without a DVD playing, let alone to Canada! Very funny and wonderful drawings.

5 out of 5 stars A Road Trip Down Memory Lane.......2006-08-04

"Road Trip" will be great fun for kids and highly nostalgic for parents. Roger Eschbacher's newest children's book, amusingly illustrated by Thor Wickstrom, is a fond reflection on the various details of a family car trip. While people obviously take less long car trips in favor of flying these days, it's hard to imagine anyone who couldn't relate warmly to this story. Parents will undoubtedly read it, as I did, in terms of a classic "Americana" road travel past, replete with corny roadside attractions and pre-chain marginal motels needing a look from Mom or Dad before paying for the night. Children will read or hear it in terms of their own car trip experience, perhaps confusedly noticing the absence of handheld games, DVD entertainment and iPods. Ultimately, I see this book as a look back at childhood driving vacations of most parents, but one which kids of today, the book's intended audience, can also relate to - and it sure doesn't hurt for kids to get a glimpse of America before the inundation of name brand chain motels, franchised fast food and portable electronics. "Road Trip" certainly provides that kind of experiential glimpse, and on their next car trip, I suspect most children will unconsciously be looking at the scenery instead of an LCD screen.

    5 out of 5 stars A Road Well Traveled.......2006-06-12

Like any good road trip, its the journey, not the destination and in "Road Trip" Roger Eschbacher and illustrator Thor Wickstrom give the reader a heck of a fun ride.

Written for young readers (yet more intelligent than Tom Green's movie of the same name), the beautifully illustrated "Road Trip" takes the reader through the many wonders and staples of a two day family car trip in a warm, humorous vein. Told in playful and amusing rhyme, the story is one most parents can identify with. Eschbacher takes us through the family sing-a-longs, games like license plate bingo and "I Spy with My Little Eye", jackalopes, postcards, tourist traps (be sure to check out "Paul Bunyun's Hive"!) and the inevitable squabbling with siblings which leads dad to threaten to "turn this car around right now".

Kids are sure to laugh at moments everyone can relate to like: "Gotta go, go, go. Can we stop, stop, stop? Dad says no, no, no. Will I pop, pop, pop?"

Thor Wickstrom's illustrations are rich and clever, providing a lot to look at as one reads the book again and again (and the kids will want to read this one again--and unlike some kids books, that's something YOU won't mind doing either!). The great detail he puts into each page adds some nice jokes that go along well with Eschbacher's amusing story.

It's a good read for kids who are either on, about to go on or just finished with their own first family road trip, while providing adults with a nostalgic look back to the days when they occupied the back seat and wondered "are we there yet?" It is sure to stir some memories.

2 out of 5 stars More BattleTech than Bolo. Shame!.......1998-04-20

A friend of mine who was "into sci-fi" convinced me to read a "BattleTech" book. Cheap fireworks for understimulated teenagers; a complete waste of time. But long before this pulp a master of the Golden Age wrote the best-ever stories of this genre', the Bolo stories. Keith Laumer's Bolo wasn't just big guns incidentally slaved to a good computer. It felt pain; passion; dismay; hope; joy; and above all else desire. It spoke with cold logic, never wasted a word. But its nanosecond thoughts were lavish with emotion. As with tales of soft-spoken heroes of the martial arts or the Old West, they think much and speak little -- and only then carry a big stick. Honor and desire, not mere power, are the Bolo's allegories. The authors of "Unconquerable" have insipidly shifted the focus from guts to guns. Laumer's passion and vision extinguished in these stories, they might as well carry the "Power Rangers" brand name -- it would be just as relevant, and more apropos.

4 out of 5 stars a bolo a day keeps the deng away........1997-12-09

Bolos are awsome. There are very few things even in fiction that I can think about and say that is just the ultimate. A previouse reveiw leads you to beleive this book is not good. that is not the case it was rated a 7. what it is is that the bolo series is so good that this one had trouble reaching that peak. its like saying the superbowl is not that big, well thats true when you compare it to the Olympics but that dosn't make the super bowl any less enjoyable. If you like bolos read this, if you dont know about bolos read this and you will love them.

4 out of 5 stars Bolos: lancelots of the future IIII.......1997-07-01

Tis book was a little dissapointing: it tried to concentrate on the technological aspects of the bolos, but got many , many things wrong. Dates, times and other small details are not correct, and two of the stories have said the the Bolo's main weapon, a hellbore energy cannon, uses shells. This is not a bad book, but none of the stories are especially outstanding

5 out of 5 stars A must read- this book will be glued to your hands til read!.......1997-04-13

Anything with the word Bolo and Laumer is going to be very good, the type of book you save for reading that is special. This book reaches deep and connects .... you will really enjoy it!!

If you grew up in the church, are bored with or sick of church & shallow evangelicalism this book is awesome. It doesnt try to prescribe any solutions, it only observes why people leave evangelical churches and what happens to them afterwards. Best thing about the book: you know you are not alone and you understand what's going on inside of you.

5 out of 5 stars Growing not dying - encouragement for leavers and pastors.......2003-07-05

I found this book extremely thought-provoking and encouraging. In particular, it introduced me to the work of James Fowler in modelling spiritual growth as stages of faith. The book challenges the prevailing view about church leavers and I felt has clear messages for both the individual feeling church is no longer for them, and for churches facing the departure of well-known members.

From the perspective of someone rethinking their religious faith, the most helpful aspect of the book was the level-voiced and non-judgemental survey work (drawn from Jamieson's doctoral thesis) showing why people stop attending churches. Jamieson develops a model showing why people leave and the summary, surprising to some, is that it's a matter of growth of faith rather than death of faith that makes the majority of leavers go it alone. The key message to the individual? "You're not the first to face this, and you're not on your own".

Like the related book 'The Post-Evangelical', Jamieson discusses the fact that faith systems today exist in the context of a culture completing the transition to a post-modern outlook. His challenge to church leaders is to see leavers not as the fallen but as pioneers. His research finds in the majority of cases individuals with insight into expressing faith in post-modern terms rather than in the modernist terms of the established churches. The key message to the church? "Culture is changing, and your leavers are your congregations's pioneers".

Overall this is a book that should be on every minister's shelf and which could offer relief to long-term church members and leaders suffering 'burn out'.

                                5 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS needlepoint resource!.......2002-02-22

I bought this book in order to make a truly unique seat cover for a vintage chair. The photos are great, the charts easy to follow and there is even a list of colors needed in both wool and DMC floss, depending on your preference. The results were fabulous. And this is only the second needlepoint project I've done in my life. I've bought a second book by Ms. Serena called Berlin Work and I'm looking forward to a third with Animal designs. If you're looking for some truly historical designs, this is the book for you. If you can find my website, there are pictures of my chair there. m. LAIUPPA

This book is the best source I have found for original designs. Anyone looking for extremely detailed and diverse designs would enjoy this book. Most of the designs could be used directly from the photos of the charts. This book is magnificent! Truly different than any other needlepoint book I have seen, well worth purchasing. There is enough material to last a lifetime of stiching!

This is the finest collection of charted historical embroidery patterns I have ever encountered. The illustration articles and patterns are of exceptional quality and extremely well reproduced - many of the original painted patterns appear in a size one can work from as easily as the selection of black and white patterns produced for the book. We can only hope that Raffaella Serena will produce more works of this calibre.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on classical needlework designs.......1998-10-20

The book displays part of the unique collection world-wide of classical needlepoint designs of the Biedermeier period (early 19th century). The editor is a professional researcher and well-known for her "beautiful" publications. The exquisite colour charts in this book, representing flowers, landscapes, borders etc. were hand-painted by specialized artists, similar to early Victorian needlework designs. In addition to 37 black & white embroidery designs, also pictured in colour, most of the excellent illustrations could serve, if magnified, as colour patterns for embroiderers. The almost 200 colour pictures are delightful for anyone interested in needlework, either for just looking or for using the designs for petit point, gros point or cross-stitches. It is one of the "richest" books for classical designs I have seen, including American and English publications.

5 out of 5 stars Architectural Revolution by Information Revolution.......2006-11-21

We all know that information revolution has totally transformed the society. Architecture is no exception. Relative to industrial revolution's impact on architecture, "what has this recent revolution done to the field?" is the basic inquiry to the book. This book diligently answers to the question. It is extremely informative and provocative regarding digital technologies available for architecture.

As an outcome of a symposium held at U.Penn. in 2002, the book compiles various scholars and practitioners around the world. They grapple with the current technologies available to design and manufacture innovative shapes/forms/spaces that associate with digital aesthetics.

Spearheaded researchers such as Bill Mitchell(MIT), Chris Luebkeman(Arup), Ali Rahim (U.Penn), and Branko Kolarevic (U.Penn, chief editor of the book); and, cutting-edge practitioners such as Jim Glymph (Gehry), Hugh Whitehead (Foster & Partners), Bernhard Franken (Franken Architekten), etc.; both groups provide theoretical framework and actual applications.

It's interesting to point out that the authors deliberately associated digital architecture with smooth forms. Double curvatures deform structure/ skin/ space of the building. The new modes of design and production enables that complex geometries to be part of building industry.

As a reader, the most challenging claim of the book is that the authors
assert (some explicitly and some implicitly) on the new role of an architect. They believe that this new mode of production will revolutionize the client-architect-contractor relationship. Because architects will be the (single) dominant source of information on the three dimensionally morphed shape, manufacturers and fabricators would rely heavy on architects. The authors predict architect would regain absolute power of medieval master builders.

                                    Book Description

Per Arnoldi (*1941 in Copenhagen) is active in many areas of the fine arts and in his homeland Denmark he is a well-known figure in public life. His works are widely represented in the permanent collections of many important museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Arnoldi collaborates regularly with the architect Norman Foster and consequently he was responsible for the colour concept at the Reichstag in Berlin. He has also achieved international acclaim and admiration as a designer of posters, which convey their messages through a compelling visual simplicity which rises above the banal yet focusses on the essentials. Illustrated in four colours throughout, this book documents and comments on the highlights of his work from the mid 1970s to his most current projects.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Irreverent.......1999-03-19

So Far, So Funny is a fascinating and irreverent look at show business over the last 60 years. Author Hal Kanter's experience spans radio, TV and movies during the Golden Age of each medium. Kanter's dry wit never turns brittle as he guides the reader anecdotally through his career as comedy writer, director and producer. Never at a loss for words, most of them funny, Kanter drops more Hollywood names than Elia Kazan. Among my favorites is his anecdote of the dapper character actor Adolph Menjou whose arrogance apparently was matched by his abilities. Kanter sums up his own life (and his book) in his comment about his friend and colleague George Gobel: "He spent 60 years, man and boy, exercising his gift to amuse- or at the least, to keep us from getting sullen". No one can read So Far, So Funny and remain sullen.

"SO FAR, SO FUNNY (My Life In Show Business)" by Hal Kanter Published by McFarland & Co. (320 pp. $35 library binding; photos, index) Reviewed by Page Turner ========================================================================

Every generation or so, a new comic voice is enlisted in a pantheon of American humorists that include Mark Twain, Will Rogers and Fred Allen. Now comes a laugh-a-paragraph memoir from veteran comedy writer Hal Kanter, who says modestly that he has often been compared unfavorably with these giants. But his fresh, impudent memoir of growing up in the Deep South and fleeing from the Shallow North will alter that comparison. For Kanter has helped keep the world laughing for at least 60 years through radio, movies, TV and speaking out loud in public. SO FAR, SO FUNNY covers Kanter's life from his birth in Savannah, Georgia, through his first work as an adolescent cartoonist in New York to a second career as a journalist before arriving, at the age of 18, on the doorstep of his ultimate profession as a multiple Emmy Award winning and big-screen writer, director and producer. In unadorned prose, peppered with droll observations and wit, he writes of the celebrated people he has worked with. One gets the feeling that while journalist Kanter missed nothing, gentleman Kanter reports only part of what amused him, leaving us wanting more. The book is populated with people of prominence in both the lively arts and deadly politics: Elvis and Madonna; Hope and Crosby, Olsen and Johnson, Martin and Lewis; Wendell Willkie, Adlai Stevenson and Walter Mondale, Groucho and Tallulah, Gable and Gobel, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Carl Sandburg. Al Jolson, Ed Wynn; Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock and George Cukor; Diahann Carroll, Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand and many others listed in an 18-page index. The reader accompanies Kanter backstage to several of the 28 Oscar shows to which he contributed more than his scripts. Having served as the warm-up speaker on a dozen Academy Awards, he gives us insider moments that bring more laughs than some of the shows themselves. Even when the author faces a life-threatening medical problem, he finds ways to amuse his doctors and keep his family's spirits high. SO FAR, SO FUNNY will keep yours up, too. It's a memorable read. ======
