Book Description
Focusing on the relationship between two fiercely independent women--Teresa, a writer, and Alicia, an artist--this epistolary novel was written as a tribute to Julio Cortázar's
Hopscotch and examines Latina forms of love, gender conflict, and female friendship. Ana Castillo's groundbreaking first novel,
The Mixquiahuala Letters, received an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation and is widely studied as a feminist text on the nature of self-conflict.

A Pioneer of Women of Color Literature.......2004-03-16
The problem as I see it regarding some of the negative reviewers is their ahistorical perspective, not just of literature but of society. I used this novel in my class shortly after it's publication in 1986. Ana Castillo was known for trailblazing with her poetry at least for ten years prior to this. There weren't any Chicana novelists to speak of at that time. There wasn't anyone saying the things she courageously penned in her youth. Today, people take for granted that there is such as a things as "Hispanic Literature", that women of color of all backgrounds can say what they want and get published by major publishers. Castillo was among the pioneers. Small presses not only paid no money, kept all rights, they had no editors. So what if she spelled a word wrong under those circumstances? Are we going to fault a woman poet from Aphganistan when she doesn't properly dot her eyes and cross her ts for the privileged for never knew what it was to struggle? Forget struggling! Who never knew oppression? This is what that generation had to do so that now, white women and others ignorant of their own peoples' history in this country can posture with the arrogance they presume they may have because of privilege. One reviewer called herself "half Chicana", "somewhat of a feminist"--when she becomes truly something and knows what it takes to get there then she may have earned the right to criticize those who came before her.
Amateurish but worthwhile if this is your area of interest.......2003-11-09
Ms. Castillo's novel should have been incredibly interesting to me, since I am a Hispanic Literature buff and have always been quite interested in Chicano Literature, but I found this novel tedious and poorly constructed. The idea of reading the novel in different orders has been seen before, as is obvious to any who has read Hopscotch (Rayuela) by Julio Cortázar or "Pedro Páramo" by Juan Rulfo, and it was best left alone. Castillo's use of the technique doesn't even match up to the level of a "Choose Your Own Adventure", because the three different readings leave you feeling exactly the same way, BORED. She makes her novel rest completely on the lives of her characters, but then she doesn't really ever develop them enough for you to become interested. I never felt like I got to know them at all. I was a bit disappointed, but I suppose this book could have some attaction to Chicana women who can identify a bit more with the characters. Maybe being a Chicana woman would help a reader to fill in all the blanks and holes that Castillo leaves in her characterizations, but the rest of us are left with a lot of doubts in our minds.
Anyone can relate.......2003-03-14
Have you ever felt disenfranchised either because you are a person of color, a woman, an outsider? Like you did not fit in but forced you way in anyway? Like the way you choose was a bit dangerous but still you loved it? Castillo captures those feelings and the ones we have when we share those wonderful crazy moments with someone of the same sex. Camaraderie and sisterhood is a theme that is woven into every word she writes. I recommend this book for entertainment and if it is required for a class then just consider yourself lucky.
I hate this book.......2001-12-04
This is probably the worst book I was ever forced to read. It is so poorly written, I could hardly bear to pick it up after I threw it to the ground in frustration. I don't know who edited this novel, but he or she should be fired. There were so many problems of grammar and punctuation and vocabulary. Castillo uses the word "prodigy" when she meant "progeny," as in "the school built for the progidy of the very rich." And she does it TWICE!!
I don't have as much of a problem with the style or the story or the characters (though the narrator was terribly self-righteous and both main females are complete idiots who do everything they can to let themselves be victimized). It is just such a sloppy mess.
It seems to me that if you wanted to write a book that is supposed to represent some marginalized group, you would want to work even harder to make sure that your book is well-written. Otherwise, how can you expect anyone to take you seriously?
I am half Chicana, and something of a feminist, and I hope that nobody, Chicano or not, feminist or not, will buy this book, because we all deserve so much more.
P.S. Contrary to the review above, the friend of the narrator, though she comes from a privileged background, is not Anglo, but at least part Spanish and the rest of her ethnic heritage is not discussed. Doesn't anybody want to get things right?
A story which has lost its way.......2001-09-21
First, I found the construction of the story, fictious letters written by a fictional character to her fictional friend, tedious.
Second, I thought that Alicia, the friend of the central character, Teresa, to be stereo-
typed as a flat-chested, plain white woman. Thus, it is that Tere, as a Chicana,
is of course not so. Third, both woman turn out to be victimized in one way or another by society, or men, but mostly by men. Teresa, as a Chicana, is the major victim. In fact she manages to wrap her
victimization by men as a feature of our society. Victimized by society, ultimately.
Not to be completely down on this work, I kinda liked the Mexico episodes.
I think what I most dislike about this book is that it's a pigeon-holed book - a feminist, Chicana (or should that be - a feminist-Chicana) story. Labeling it so, it pretty much takes
someone like me out of the reading public, since I am neither.
I think Ms. Castillo should have aimed higher. I think she should have written a book with wider
appeal. Neither one of the characters makes me want to like, or admire, them. I guess
the worse I could say about this effort is that, well, it bored me. A boring story about two
women.
Literature describes the human condition. In the process, you come to know the character,
live their life, feel their joy, their pain. Perhaps laugh with them, or even cry. Finally, you're life
is enriched, because you've learned things about another life which is illuminating or uplifting, in
spite of their dispair.
This book missed. It is just a feminist-Chicana book. Too bad.

Enjoyable & Pleaurable!.......2006-02-26
Riley Watson is a master of disguise. Sent undercover to infiltrate Boone Fowler's Montana Militia, Riley takes a job as ranch manager at the Golden Saddle ranch. Riley is unsure of the role Golden Saddle's owner, Courtney Rogers plays in this deadly game of intrigue, but he is determined to find out.
Learning that Courtney is pregnant and alone is not what Riley expects. Finding her being targeted by his enemies is unfathomable. With the passion between Riley and Courtney intensifying, so does the danger. With Courtney's safety at risk, Riley will do whatever he must to protect her. The stakes couldn't be higher or the danger deadlier!
Riley's Retribution is my first ever Harlequin Intrigue. I am a huge fan of romantic suspense and am excited to find another source to satisfy my need! And Riley's Retribution does, indeed, satisfy. Full of suspense, romance, and passion, Ms. York kept me on the edge of my seat. The desire Riley and Courtney share is very heated. Add that to a thrilling plot with twists and turns, and I was biting my lip to see how the story ended. For fans of romantic suspense, I recommend Riley's Retribution for an exciting and pleasurable read!

A thrilling tale of citizens fighting to defend their home.......2005-01-22
The Republic of the Sphere has basically collapsed in the two years since the HPG interstellar communications grid went down. Clans and Houses are making power grabs all over the galaxy, and most of the now-isolated planets are finding out that ignorance is not bliss. Alkalurops is a seemingly insignificant little mining planet out in the middle of nowhere - galactically speaking; its people are simple miners and farmers. They have always stood up and fought for themselves in the past, but their noble ancestors never had to face Mechwarriors in hellish BattleMechs. When a raiding party lands on the planet and begins confiscating equipment and supplies, a lot of folks - mostly urban types - stand back and freely give what true patriots would never surrender. Not so in the small town of Falkirk, where a spunky redhead with Scotch-Irish blood coursing through her veins leads a group of citizens willing to fight for what is theirs. Using mining Mechs crudely fashioned with whatever kind of offensive weapons the local engineers can fashion, Grace O'Malley and her militia take on the raiders and, as much by luck as anything else, live to fight another day. One thing is made clear by this limited engagement, though - the people willing to defend Alkalurops are going to need help if they are going to hold on to their land and their lives.
After a robust assembly of the people's representatives, Grace heads off-planet to hire some skilled professional soldiers of the planet's own. The Roughriders, under the command of Loren J. Hanson, are the first to turn her away with impossible payment demands; little does Grace know that the Roughriders have spent time on her planet already. In the end, Grace comes home with a loose grouping of professional soldiers tasked with turning her homegrown militia into a fighting force. Time is short, as the raiders soon return to Alkalurops with more than raiding on their mind. Then, as if things aren't bad enough, the Roughriders' client, as much a mystery to Hanson as he is to Grace, drops in with a bevy of his own Red and Black henchmen. Grace and her band of hastily trained but deeply committed patriots must come up with a novel way of fighting for their land and freedom, but it won't be easy. They know who the real enemy is, but they also have to take into account the Roughrider troops still ostensibly holding true to their contractual obligations.
A lot of these Mechwarrior Dark Age novels are basically the same: one planet faces an incursion by enemies of some sort, be they seekers of power, wealth, or both. This ninth book in the new series really has a spirit of its own, however. The citizens of Alkalurops are not trained fighters; they are just regular people who would rather die fighting for their land than see it stolen by ruthless brigands. Their strategies and tactics definitely qualify as unconventional. It makes for an especially interesting conclusion, as this is a battle that cannot be avoided. If you like your battles by the book, or you lust to see battalions going head to head across a traditional battleground, you won't find much of that here, but it seems to me that the most realistic of battles are never fought by the book.
The local politics of Alkalurops adds great depth to the story, as does the work of some intriguing intelligence agents. Basically, the fight itself isn't half as interesting as the preparations that come before it. I should also note that this story really plays out as a local affair; while a couple of intriguing questions arise, Patriot's Stand essentially takes place within a geopolitical vacuum rather far removed from the large-scale crumbling of the Republic itself.
Good characters make for good novels, and Patriot's Stand features a couple of good ones. I will admit that I felt a few of the characters could have been threshed out a little more, the villain is a real paper tiger, and the story behind the story of the villain was left a little nebulous, but it is hard not to like L. J. Hanson, and I must say it was a real joy to get to know Grace O'Malley. The planet may be Alkalurops, but the freedom fighters here sound a whole lot like the kind of Terran settlers who once fought for and won independence from Great Britain - they are patriots of the highest order.
hell...it was GOOD!.......2004-08-27
i've read most of the Battletech novels and i have followed the MW:DA series although i was a bit unsure for the wisdom of that in the beginning. The DA universe is not as good as Battletech, that's for sure (so many changes in 60 years???come on...)nevertheless, i liked these novels in general- it seems that the writers have earned some experience after the end of the Battletech series! As for Patriot's Stand...in the beginning, i got the impression that it was somewhat...naive?too b-movie style?but, as i kept reading...it kept getting better!in fact, i think that it is the best novel in both Battletech and MW:DA that describes COMMON people and how they are affected by the fighting, the politics and so on!Grace O' Malley and her pals are not some top-notch mercs, or princes, dukes and nobles, no hard nosed military or glory-bound, battle-crazed clanners. they are simple people, who have known peace for all their lifetime, have received no real military training and are suddenly with war and a crazed madman upon their heads!having read about revolutions and resistance movements throughout history, i can say that the raising of the Alkalurops
Another disappointing MW:DA novel.......2004-06-24
This book was pure torture to read. The characters were mostly sterotypical and, as with many of the MW:DA novels, I didn't really care what happened to them.
The battles in this book were extremely unbelievable and annoying. Somehow minners and farmers who had little to no training or experiance and piloted Industial Mechs were able to land hit after hit, while elite and experianced mercenaries piloting battlemechs missed their shots almost every time.
This was one of those books where you find yourself hoping for the "bad guys" to win. I'd advise anyone who dislikes constant pain while reading to avoid this book.
dull.......2004-06-07
not as bad as flight of the falcon but still one of the worst fark age books, the story pretty much has nothing to do with the important main saga of dark age and its seems to drag on and urge you to skip pages
Had Potential.......2004-05-05
While this story had a great plot going for it, it fell short in most other areas. It was intensly boring and had close to no action aside from beginning and the end, and it was based on a tiny insignificant little planet. This HAD potential but it was wasted.

Flush Decks and Four Pipes.......2001-11-06
John D. Alden is a retired U. S. Navt Commander with an eye for detail and the ability to make Naval history come alive.
In his book "Flush Decks and Four Pipes", Mr. Alden examines the early class of U.S. destroyers known as 'four pipers' or 'four stackers'. He follows them from their inception in 1917 through all their service, including World War II. Not only that, Mr. Alden provides a record of each of the 273 four stackers (indexed by hull number and name), including its commissioning and decommissioning dates and its ultimate fate.
The book is filled with black and white photographs and stories of particular four stackers, including illustrations of several that were overhauled or converted as time went by.
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the old four piper destroyers. The only thing it lacks are some color plates which would help modelers and others to visualize paint schemes.

Book Description
For centuries, writers, painters, and musicians have succumbed to the magical charms of Venice. From the lagoon—the city's life source crisscrossed by fishermen, sailors, and gondoliers—to the streets and squares that form the backdrop to the Venetians' theatrical way of life, the authors invite us to discover extravagant interiors in a tour of the palazzi, modern apartments, and private homes and gardens. Visit the colorful workshops where goldsmiths, boatbuilders, weavers, lace-makers, and other artisans craft traditional Venetian specialties. This revised edition is illustrated with 430 photographs and completed by a guidebook listing more than two hundred hotels, restaurants, and shops recommended by true Venetians.

Morning, Noon, and Night in Venice.......2006-01-31
'It is four o'clock in the morning. A foreigner asks a Venetian the way back to his hotel. The man thinks for a moment, then replies 'The fastest or the most beautiful?' This is the flavor writer Frederic Vitoux, literary and film critic, novelist, writer on Rossini and Celine, uses to describe Venice the way that only those who have lived there can share the wonders of this mysterious city. Vitoux lived on the 'canal level' of an apartment house for a winter and took his time absorbing all the history, tales, architecture, gardens, and atmosphere of Venice and in this wonderful book he warmly relates his experience and lessons from that Venetian winter.
Vitoux is accompanied by photographer Jerome Darblay in this visual excursion into the private and public places that the two contributors have selected to share. Darblay is well known as a photographer of interiors and he captures more details, bric-a-brac, and priceless bibelots than most photographers. And that is not to say he ignores the exterior aspects of Venice! His images of the canals in all periods of the daylight and nightlight are magical and his vistas of the squares, walkways, facades, carvings on buildings, people, animals - all are first rate photographs.
There are many books on Venice, each with its own vantage, but for the personal inside view of how Venetians live and feel about their special city, this book is among the best. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06
I wish I could Live in Venice!.......2001-06-12
This book has some incredibly beautiful photographs of a fantastically beautiful city. There are the standard photos of the Grand Canal palazzi, but also pictures of the details that make Venice so special... gardens, small statues guarding stone walls, interiors - both palatial and practical, artisans' workshops, brown robed monks on San Giorgio looking towards Venice ... From the back cover: "A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guide to the grand style and traditions of Venice and its inhabitants. Through rich text and over 430 breathtaking photographs, discover and explore the more intimate, picturesque, and rarely seen sides of this majestic city." This is a Beautiful and Inspiring book.

Golden Keys to a Lifetime of Living.......2006-08-25
This book is the sequel to Dr. Bloodworth's classic text, Key to Yourself. It contains a brief biography, introductory notes and 11 lessons, called Letters on Self Realization. From the book's introduction:
"As demand for her teaching increased, Dr Bloodworth prepared a series of lessons for insruction by correspondence to ease her crowded schedule. This useful idea now becomes a welcome answer to those who are asking to see more of her writing. These lessons, which were intended to fill a definite need for those who wished to be included in her classes, are now available to meet a present demand.
In explaining the value of applied metaphysics as presented in her teaching, Venice Bloodworth has written: 'As the term implies, Metaphysics is that science which is higher - above the physical. It deals with universal of spiritual laws, and while it is necessarily spiritual, an Absolute and Divine Science, it is nevertheless, practical and non-sectarian. This course of lessons tries to answer the questions of who is God, and where is he. Why am I here? They also set forth clearly the various phrases, degrees and laws of achievement through Idealization, Visualization, Realization, and Demonstration. The student is taught that thoughts are tangible things; that without the thought and word nothing is made or brought forth into expression. Moreover the student is taught how to relate himself to God, to understand the Divine attributes within himself, and how to connect or unite himself with the Universal Energy. Through the study and application of Metaphysics man learns to know himself. He understands the purpose of life - his own individual life. He awakens to his own soul's latent power, his own possibilities, and comes into the realization of "The Father and I are One."'"

Interiors of superb elegance and style.......2006-03-02
When you've had a book for years and opened it with joy over and over again, you can really recommened it. Some of the older titles (this one and "Living in Amsterdam" for example) in the group of books titled "Living in..." focus on special interiors that together contribute the soul of the city if you like. Later titles give more touristy information.
The glassworks, mirrors, gilding, iron-work, silks and marble of Venice are shown here. Art, furniture and textile that are typical of the city. It's fantastic to be transfered to the mirage-city of the lagoon just by opening the book and wander through the different parts of the town.

A great book to put you in "the mood" for logo design. "Power of Logos" walks you through a number of interesting questions that you'll want to consider before designing a logo.
Many of the examples are peculiar to Hawaii but that is interesting too!

"Chicks Rule" doesn't rule........2003-11-07
The book "Chicks Rule: The story of the Dixie Chicks" is inaccurate and not a very good biography of the band. It has continuous rambling from the author about topics not even realted to the Dixie Chicks! I DO NOT reccommend this to anyone who is looking for a complete biography of the Dixie Chicks. If you want to better book to find out this history, check out *"Dixie Chicks: Down-Home and Back Stage", written by James L. Dickerson. It is the most accurate accounting of the Dixie Chicks history to be found in print. It was painstakingly researched over a two year period, and includes interviews with founding Dixie Chick lead singer, Laura Lynch-Tull, as well as many other current and former associates of the Dixie Chicks. It includes many exclusive photographs of the early Dixie Chicks. And for eGroup members, you will find the stories and quotes of several of your fellow fans there.* (*= from www.dixiechicksfaq.com). If you would rather find out the history more easily, check out www.dixie-chicks.com. This iste has the complete detailed history from when Martie and Emily were teenagers and even has news about what Laura Lynch and Robin Macy are upto these days.
This book could have been a 1 star, but it got 2 because of the effort and pictures.
