4 out of 5 stars Wildly intelligent book.......1999-10-06

Since there is no synopsis of the book here, I will write one and then write my opinion.

It is 1973 and Peron is summoned back to Argentina after 18? years in exile in Madrid. He is now an old man and his movement has moved beyond his own strict ideology. His return is viewed through the eyes of no fewer than 20 people, who are in the process of making some sense out of Peron's life and his tendency towards Megalomania. These range from his wife, Isabella, his relatives, his president, ex-military companions, and some wierd extremist groups (which I DID NOT understand, sorry Tomas).

OK- now I transition into opinion. The truly unique thing about this book is that it centers around a one week period, but retells this same week from a multitude of standpoints, some even demented. Many times throughout the book I seriously considered flying to Iowa to hunt down the author and ask him "how much of this is true??" He puts himself in the book as a reporter, and it is plausible that he actually met Peron. I feel sure he has mountains of good info, and probably could write an engaging biography of this man (which then of course no one would read, so maybe this is his point).

While I did like this book, I was much more engaged by the writing itself and the odd twists or context and historical events that he describes than in the actual content. I forced myself to read it because I knew I'd like it, more than I was compelled to read it.

And if you're still reading this, go to Santa Evita and read that first, because it has all the advantages of this peculiarly odd book with a much more engaging topic. Then read this because this Tomas Eloy is a fantastic writer.

          Book Description

She had planned to let somebody else learn from adversity today, even if it meant she never, ever, ever mastered the noble virtue of patience.

Adversity, she discovered this fine May Monday morning when she flung open her front door--dressed in high-water overalls, shower shoes and a windbreaker--had other plans. It had come in the form of a brand-new, never-expected variety right there on her doorstep.

And it had a proposition for her. . .

Wileyville, Kentucky, needs a graveyard superintendent. Accepting the mayor's proposition, Sadie adds 'Fraidy Sadie the Cemetery Lady to the other roles that sometimes seem unreal to her--former Dogwood Blossom Queen, pharmacist's wife, mother of two teenagers, daughter of a man who fancies himself King Solomon--or King Lear? But her daddy's antics and a journey with her sisters into the past bring Sadie a stunning revelation, and an understanding of what she's been waiting for.

All the books I have read from Annie Jones have been good, humorus and clean. I do recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Sisterly Road Trip.......2006-12-07

Sadie is feeling kinda glum. She's living in a small town, just got appointed graveyard superintendent (who really wants that job?), and she's having trouble raising her two teens. Plus she's suspecting her husband of an affair and her eccentric dad is driving her and her sisters, April and Hannah, absolutely nuts. The sisters are close but Sadie is given the most responsibility over their father, who took care of them after their mother left them when they were little. Since they are never allowed to discuss their mother, the sisters are kept in the dark as to why she left them long ago. One day when their dad leaves to go find their mother, Sadie and her sisters go to track him down. On their road trip they discover things about themselves they didn't know and learn to strengthen their relationship with each other and with their families back home.

I liked that there were 3 sisters in this book, just like in my family. You see how each sister fit their role as youngest, middle, and oldest perfectly. I'm glad finally took charge and stood up for herself against her daughter, her husband, her sisters, and the townspeople. Small town settings where everyone always knows each other are always interesting to me because I live in largely populated area. It's always refreshing to read about simpler lifestyles. I also liked how the sisters grew closer together as they find out the truth about their mother. A very touching and moving scene. Family is the most important thing in the world. I felt that this book wasn't really chick lit or mom lit. It was more a women's fiction type of book. Still I enjoyed it and am ready to read about Hannah's story in "Mom Over Miami."

5 out of 5 stars A Master Storyteller at Work.......2006-04-15

This book showcases some of Ray Bradbury's greatest short stories. His talent is to create a story that the reader is immediately able to sink into no mater how unbelievable the plot, the setting or the characters, and from time machines, to interplanetary adventures, this book is truly filled with the improbable which Bradbury makes seem imminently possible. This is truly is an enjoyable read.

              5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2000-12-14

I highly recommend this book to any fan of Ray Bradbury's work, or to anyone who wishes to introduce his classic works into their library. He is a passionate visionary that writes not only about sci-fi, but his colorful writing style encapsulates the sometimes ineffable feelings that each and every one of us have had about every possible situation in life, and dare I say, in death. I always feel like a kid again when I read his books, I am taken away to warm, sunny Saturdays when I was still in awe of the newness of life. I can hardly force myself to read the works of others as I am convinced that no one can do with words the magic that Ray Bradbury has done.

              5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2000-11-10

Ray Bradbury is a genius-pure and simple. He is a great. Proof is his power to affect the heart while engaging the intellect.

              5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......1999-05-23

These stories are the most piognant I have ever read except in The Martian Chronicles. These stories are mind blowing. Bradbury is the greatest short story writer of our time and maybe all time.

              5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......1999-04-02

If anything this collection only reasserts what a treasure Bradbury is, probably the most American of our short story writers and one who can still speak to everyone with his stories. His tone is as calm as Arthur Clarke but you never really realize that you're reading something fantastic and outerworldly, he can make every event seem commonplace. This set is a collection of many of his best and most of the have become part of our consciousness, where we can barely envision a world where these stories had never existed. "The Foghorn" is probably one of his best known but there are others equally worthy. "R is for Rocket" is his best story by my counts, though "Frost and Fire" isn't too behind. The wealth of classic material in here is almost criminal, one person shouldn't be this creative. The only complaint is that a bunch of the stories in the R is for Rocket section were repeated in the Illustrated Man but that's a minor complaint really. They're just as good the second time. Go read this if you have any doubts about Bradbury's genius and you shall doubt no longer.

                Book Description

Fredrick J. Miller came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from Germany 150 years ago and started a small brewery that would evolve into one of the world's largest. In The Miller Beer Barons, author Tim John tells the complete story of the family that built a beer empire from the entrepreneurial days of brewers like Miller, Pabst and Best, through the struggles of Prohibition to the corporate modern era.

A member of the Miller family, John introduces readers to quirky and controversial family members like Emil Miller, who smashed beer bottles of competitors with his cane when he discovered them at taverns, or John's own father, Harry, who served a brief, but stormy, tenure as company president. Tim John spent several years researching the book, which is likely the most complete history of Miller Brewing ever done.

"The Miller Beer Barons" arrives just in time to commemorate Miller's 150th anniversry in 2005.

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshingly Honest Beer History.......2007-05-20

I went to High School with the author in Milwaukee- just blocks from the Miller Brewery; played on the same football team. Later I spent 13 years as an employee of the Miller Brewing Company. (After Tim John's family had sold to Philip Morris).

Tim has to be congratulated for both the scholarly handling of the subject and his candor about what has to be a deeply emotional subject.

I know that Tim John really cares for the people at Miller Brewing today. Even with no direct ties to the brewery he wanted to know how the workers at Miller were treated during my tenure. He is entitled to take pride in the incredible heritage his family left.

This book is quite refreshingly different from most self praising beer stories. Tim John writes frankly and well about a family business, a city and its neighborhoods, and the sometimes crazy world of beer. It's like that first good lager on a warm summer day!

I hope to catch up with Tim in Milwaukee sometime; perhaps at the 2007 150th Anniversary celebration of Marquette University High School. Maybe he'll buy me a beer!

If you want a real and honest history get this book.

5 out of 5 stars A trans-generational tour of wealth, power, and their sometimes rocky transitions.......2006-01-07

The Miller Beer Barons: The Frederick J. Miller Family And Its Brewery is the true and fascinating story of the Miller family, which started and ran the Miller Brewing Company for over one hundred years. Stretching from late 1800's Germany, when Mr. Miller brewed his first beer, to 1970, when Harry G. John Jr.'s sale of Miller stock was the end of the family's involvement with the company, The Miller Beer Barons is a trans-generational tour of wealth, power, and their sometimes rocky transitions. An inset section of black-and-white photographic plates nicely rounds out this exhaustively researched, meticulously detailed, highly recommended family biography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent synopsis of brewing history in Wisconsin........1998-12-24

Very informative and detailed history of brewing in the state made famous by the craft of German immigrants. Short histories of the major breweries of Wisconsin fill in the trivia gaps any beer buff may have. Includes many historical pictures of Blatz, Schlitz, Pabst, Walter, Oshkosh, Mathie-Ruder, Gettelman, and of course, Miller. The listing of all known brewery buildings still standing in Wisconsin is espescially helpful for guiding the weekend roadtrip. Viewing these historical structures is a great way to imagine the brewing industry of the past 150 years. Highly recommended for anyone interested in beer, from the history afficionado, to the basement homebrewer.

                              4 out of 5 stars Mary Morrison's Christmas Jewelry 2nd edition.......2007-05-07

If you are going garage sale shopping, this book will fit in your tote and provide immediate information. Ms. Morrison does a good job of organizing alphabetically by designer, and she takes the time to warn about copies, particularly the Weiss tree pins. She also has a theme section with pointsettia pins, candles, reindeer, etc. I really like the cover where she lays a selection of her pins on a piece of Christmas fabric. I do find the print of the captions very small, even wearing my glasses, no doubt an accommodation for the size of the book. I also sometimes have trouble deciding which pin among three or four she is describing. Each is noted in the text with a letter of the alphabet, but there's no letter on the picture. I would also recommend that in her next edition, her husband not photograph any pins on dark paper backgrounds. In several instances, a dark burgundy or sapphire paper makes it impossible to see the details of the pin.

Mary Morrison has put together a wonderful array of some of the best costume Christmas jewelry out there! A good range of the inexpensive and available to the rare and most desirable pieces with reasonable prices that reflect the market of the time the book was published. I love this book! I am a beginning collector and this book has inspired me. The research is thorough, and it is great to finally know the story behind the pins I already have.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Jewelry is a MUST HAVE for collectors and dealers.......2000-04-28

Christmas Jewelry by Mary Morrison is the very best book currently available concentrating on costume Christmas jewelry. The photography is excellent, allowing you to clearly see the details in each pin. Mary's descriptions with each photo are informative and interesting. It's size is very convenient for carrying to shops and shows. It is extremely easy to use. The variety of pins shown is staggering; as a Christmas tree pin collector with over 100 pins, my only disappointment with this book is that it is not a catalog where I can place orders!

How useful is this book? Within a fortnight of its purchase, I repaired the damaged cockbeading on my mid-Victorian/ Scotch chest of drawers using a scratch stock, and managed to open a locked cabinet door on my Victorian chiffonier by cutting a new barrel key. Prior to purchasing the book, I had contacted a local cabinetmaker regarding fashioning a replacement cockbeading for my chest of drawers. The cabinetmaker assured me that the job was "...very complex" and placed me on a year-and-a-half waiting list. My local locksmith was prepared to charge me $150 to open the locked cabinet door on my chiffonier. The barrel key blank cost me $12.

The book is a breath of fresh air with its emphasis on restoration using old methods, techniques, and materials rather than prescribing the usual hearty dollop of filler and varnish to get your beloved piece back to its former glory. I found the chapter devoted to colour matching to be particularly significant, and I have yet to encounter a book that delves so deeply into the matter.

The chapter entitled "Is it Really Antique?" made for a fascinating read. The Development of the English Wood Screw, Woodworking Methods, Locks, and Anatomy of a Fake are all accompanied by a bounty of useful photographs.

Truly the most useful book that I have found on the subject, and one that I reach for before all of the others when I need a question answered.

Bennett has created a clear guide that both beginning and experienced restorators will find helpful. His techniques preserve the integrity and value of antiques by treating them conservatively. I especially appreciate Bennett's directions for formulating fillers and cleaners. If you want to do a proper job of restoring a fine antique this book is an essential tool.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and very useful resource.......1999-08-14

This book is full of very helpful information on many aspects of furniture restoration and repair. Unlike many books on the subject it gives you the information you need without wasting your time or money.

I love this book and am always referring to it when I am deciding to do a DIY project in my home. I love color and this book explains all the different ways you can use paint - not only to add color, but patterns and texture as well. Paint has come a long way! It's still of the most inexpensive ways to change the look of your home and now with all the new faux techniques, the possibilities are endless.

                                  Book Description

A radical journal of culture and commentary, The Masses became, in the early part of this century, a forum for socialists and anarchists, artists and authors attracted to the freedom of expression it espoused. This book, based on an exhibition which was sponsored by the Yale University Art Gallery in 1985-86, is the first study of the art in The Masses and the changing role that pictures played in the magazine's political message. Rebecca Zurier examines the origins of The Masses' graphic style in American realism, labor cartoons, and European satire, and relates the magazine's positions to the issues of the day-a period when humor, art, and political struggles all seemed to be compatible. The 149 illustrations present an album of cartoons that are still startlingly fresh.

While one could find in any issue commentary by Max Eastman, Walter Lippmann, Bill Haywood, or John Reed; and literary pieces by Sherwood Anderson, Carl Sandburg, Amy Lowell, or Louis Untermeyer; the visual impact of the magazine was, perhaps, its most enduring. The Masses published political cartoons by Robert Minor, Boardman Robinson, and Art Young; fine drawings by Arthur B. Davies, Abraham Walkowitz, and Pablo Picasso: and an abundance of work by the American realists later known as the Ashcan School, among them John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn Coleman, Robert Henri, and the young Stuart Davis. Although the magazine did not pay its contributors, for seven years artists and writers donated some of their best work because they believed in its ideals of social change and artistic independence.

Aiming to "conciliate nobody, not even our readers," The Masses was widely recognized as one of the best-edited and best-produced magazines in America, considered by some to be a left-wing forerunner of The New Yorker. However, because of its strident anti-war stance, when the Espionage Act went into effect in 1917, the U.S. government forced The Masses to cease publication.

This book gives a nice overview of the life of Nat King Cole but is never critical, never takes a stance and does not even go into length about some issues i would like to have read more about. His whole stance in race relations is about one page, and Gourse isn't even critical of his role in that. I was new in the world of NKC so I definitely learned some stuff, but it could have been so much better.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Too sterile..........2000-11-22

Leslie Gourse had made a career of collecting informations about jazz musicians - but all the infomations in the world dont neccesary make this book interesting. From time to time it seems to me like Im reading Nat Cole's concert date-to-date schedule, but there were any author's style or opinions to be found.Gourse has obviously spend hours researching the documents about this book, yet there is nothing to be said about MUSIC (except providing chart numbers, again so boring and grey). This book cries to be updated,as Natalie Cole recorded her classic "Unforgettable" album after this book was finished!I am currently reading Louis Armstrong's biography "An extravagant life" which has everything this book lack: class, style and most of all,the feeling that author was really involved in writting the book, not just collecting recording dates.

3 out of 5 stars The unforgettable life and music of an American legend.......2000-08-27

Leslie Gourse's book is interesting to read, with the interviews with friends and family members of Cole's. I found some inaccuracies in describing daughter Natalie's career, but it was a good read. Obviously this book was written right before Natalie released her biggest selling CD, UNFORGETTABLE WITH LOVE, which was a loving tribute to her deceased father, because Gourse doesn't mention it at all. I also noticed that Gourse tends to go off on tangents at times, discussing other people and situations, then is suddenly reminded that this is a book about Nat King Cole.

Gourse gives the reader a behind-the-scenes look at the life of this legendary jazz musician whose fame was only eclipsed by his distinctive and warm baritone voice. He endured many battles against prejudiced whites, in the entertainment industry, in his own family, and in his own race, feeling like he had to act a certain way just to please everybody. It's heartbreaking to know that he died so young. And for all the criticism he received from his own race and from other jazz artists (who never seem to want to acknowledge Nat's background in that genre, unless it's in passing, but yet you had so many groups copying his King Cole Trio format), he was truly a trailblazer, and without him, things may not have happened for blacks when they did...not saying that they wouldn't have happened at all, but because of Nat, THEY DID HAPPEN. I recommend this book when it comes back into print by the end of this year. Reading this and the Epstein biography of Cole (which is more recent, released in Oct. 1999), will give you great insight into his life. You will feel as if you knew him, like I did. Worth checking out.
