Book Description
Historians have long whispered that Elizabeth "the Virgin Queen's" passionate, lifelong affair with Robin Dudley, Earl of Leicester, may have led to the birth of a son, Arthur Dudley. In this exquisite sequel to The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, Robin Maxwell fashions a stunning fictional account of the child switched at birth by a lady-in-waiting who foresaw the deleterious political consequences of a royal bastard.
Set against the sweeping, meticulously rendered backdrop of court intrigues, international scandals, and England's battle against the Spanish Armada, The Queen's Bastard deftly juxtaposes Elizabeth and Leicester's tumultuous relationship with the memoirs of the adventurous son lost to them -- yet ultimately discovered.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but this is not Elizabeth........2006-06-14
"The Queen's Bastard" proposes a truly surprising theory - that Elizabeth I and Robin Dudley had an illegitimate son. It's clear from the beginning that an exhaustive amount of research has been done, especially since Maxwell manages to make the secret pregnancy and birth of said illegitimate son actually seem plausible. The book alternates between first-person diary entries written by Arthur, the son, and omniscient third-person sections about Elizabeth and Robin. It's surprising, interesting, and original.
The problem is Elizabeth. Maxwell's version of the queen has none of the charisma, the talent, or in fact, the brains that we know Elizabeth possessed. Instead, we get a queen who is stupidly capricious, ridiculously volatile, and just plain irritating. She doesn't change, either. From start to finish, she has not learned a thing from her early days of indiscretion. It's all well and good for her to throw some tantrums - Elizabeth did have the redhead's temper. But by the twentieth hissy fit in a hundred pages, it's neither effective nor interesting.
Robin comes off well in the beginning, but he just gets more annoying as the book progresses. By the end, when he finally accepts that Elizabeth will never marry him, he does manage to salvage what remains of his dignity, but you hardly care anymore.
Arthur is the real center of the book, probably because his entire life, except for a brief interview with the king of Spain, is fictional. He's the real mystery, the one we know nothing about. About halfway through, I found myself practically skipping over the Elizabeth/Robin sections to get to the Arthur parts. Maxwell does an excellent job with him, creating a life that, while improbable, is believable within the book's world. (He also gets a star moment during the Armada's invasion of England that had me in stitches!)
This book left me feeling torn. On the one hand, I would love to believe that Arthur Dudley was who he claimed to be - on the other hand, to do that, and buy into the book's proposition, I would have to believe in Maxwell's Elizabeth and Dudley - and they are so unappealing by the end that it is impossible.
Disapointing!.......2005-02-03
The Queens Bastard is a difficult read. Maxwell's use of the diary entries worked for her first novel but Aurther's entries are boring. The characters come across as pathetic and unlikable making it difficult to even finish the book. The crude sexual references are unnecessary, the only impact being a roll of the eyes and a turn of the page. The depiction of Tudor England in this novel was a huge disapointment. My advice is to read Philippa Gregory, Maxwell pales in comparison.
Vivid and compelling.......2004-10-04
What if Queen Elizabeth had had a child with her lover, Robert Dudley? Robin Maxwell draws upon this question as she creates the character Arthur Dudley, born a (...) to the Queen and switched at birth by a lady-in-waiting. Arthur grows up in the gentrified household of the Southern family, leading a life like that of any other English boy: riding horses, going to school, and having all kinds of troubles of his own. As an adult he participates in the wars in the Netherlands, fighting against the Spanish, witnessing years of bloody battle. It is not until he is an adult, however, that Arthur learns who his real parents were, and his "memoirs" tell us about his life leading up to that momentous occasion.
This realistic novel places the life and times of Queen Elizabeth into a clear, definitive, albeit fictional, focus. Many authors have tried to recreate Elizabeth as a person, and not many can do it as easily as Robin Maxwell did here. Life at court is visibly rendered, as are the scenes in battle that Arthur Dudley witnesses.
Intriguing . . . and possible!.......2004-08-10
I love books that take history and suggest something that is not what the history books tell us, yet is presented in such a plausible manner that you cannot help but think, "What if?" "The Queen's Bastard" is such a book, suggesting as it does that a love child was born to the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I.
I found the story fascinating, moving as it does through so many historical settings and describing them as I might have seen them then. I adore the descriptions of people, fashions, customs, meals, all of which pull the book together and enmesh the reader in the world of Elizabethan England.
I confess, my favorite summer activity is going to Renaissance Faires, and I adore the Elizabethan period, so perhaps my viewpoint is skewed. But if you are the same, grab this book for a good read, though you may wish to start with its predecessor, and read the two straight through.
Happy reading!
Excellent!.......2004-07-30
I read this book before i read any others in the series. I could not put it down from the moment i opened it! in fact, once finished, i went and bought every other book i could find by Robin Maxwell. She had me believing that this bastard child existed through the whole thing. I highly recommend it to anyone whether they have a specific interest in the period or not, it is an excellent book.

Extra sweet.......2006-05-05
Conflict is the biggest problem with this book. At first we see two girls struggling to survive and reach the USA. Then there is Siobhan's abusive husband but he is dead early on. The main conflict seems to be Lana's battle to win custody of Colin. This is important but really just the catalyst for Lana's attempt to become a lady. The only real conflict between the protagonists is whether to marry or not and there was never any doubt. A quick read but one that leaves your teeth aching from the sweetness.
Another Pretty Woman ýý.......2006-04-21
I found myself sitting with this book for over 9 1/2 hours trying to finish it. What a Book.. AWESOME story line and a MUST have for the historical reader. Must say that I found Lana to be an exciting character and just Wonderful.... I felt like she was Real and Jesse was amazing. Almost like I could see it before my eyes in real life. I thought the author wrote a wonderful story and only hope she will continue. If you want a great book this is it. The charachers feel so real and alive that you can't help but to just enjoy a fine read. There is just so much hope, desire, and love and other emotional aspects to this book it will having you turning and turning pages until you are done. Look forward to the authors next book....
Enchanting!.......2006-04-06
I could not put this book down. The fact that it doesn't focus solely on the romance aspect, but different relationships of love is great. You will fall in love with Lana and little Colin's storyline as well as Jesse and Lana's storyline. First book in a while that I read in a day, because I didn't want to stop reading.
Duchess of Fifth Avenue.......2006-03-09
After the tragic murder of her best friend, Lana Dunleavy promises to raise the other woman's son, Colin, as her own. However, Lana is an unmarried woman of low station alone in turn of the century America, and a wealthy couple wants to adopt the boy. Unable to fight alone, she turns to actor/gambler, Jesse Jordan, to help her. Under his schooling, she becomes a lady, but she is still not fit in the court's eyes without a husband. Can Jesse solve that problem as well?
**** Tried and true plot devices come together to make a sweet story. All the truly offensive characters stay offstage while the protagonists fight nobly. There is nothing really new here, but the abundant niceness is refreshing. ****
terrific "Gay Nineties" New York romance .......2006-03-08
In 1882 at the Founders Home Convent in Ireland, the orphan thirteen years old Lana Dunleavy protects her sickly twelve years old best friend Siobhan Riley as best she can until they finally escape. Three years later, they are heading to New York with Siobhan pregnant along with her husband Billy O'Malley, who prefers to gamble and drink than be with his wife.
In 1890 Lana works at the Blue Goose Tavern where she watches the expert card playing of Stone. When Siobhan tells her she is pregnant, Lana vows to help her as Billy is too busy gambling and obtains work as a Cook's assistant at a fine mansion where to her shock she sees Stone as a guest. She assumes he is going to con her employer, but has no idea how to inform them without losing her job. However, not long after telling Billy, Siobhan and the unborn die when a carriage hits her, but crashes also killing the driver too, her husband who deliberately murdered her. Lana adopts her godson Colin while Stone "adopts" her with a plan to make her not just part of the upper crust, but his DUCHESS OF FIFTH AVENUE while she thinks the mans she loves is a con artist.
This terrific "Gay Nineties" New York romance brings to life in the city at a time when immigrants struggled to obtain work while high society enjoyed the good life with parties and galas. The story line is character driven especially by the intrepid loyal Lana. Stone will remind the audience of Sky Masterson from Guys and Dolls while the extended cast augments the deep look at the era. Ruth Ryan Langan provides her fans with a powerfully descriptive historical romance.

Customer Reviews:
The Forever People is like the Sixties, but without drugs!.......2005-12-19
The Forever People is an equal fourth of Jack Kirby's legendary "Fourth World" saga for DC Comics in the seventies. It also remains one of the quirkier things the King ever did in comics (and if you've read his Jimmy Olsen stories, you know that's saying something!). As I said in the title of my review, it's like the sixties, but without drugs. And I'm not exaggerating.
Basically, the Forever People are a group of young gods from New Genesis (of New Gods fame, another book in the Fourth World lineup). In their own version of rebellion, they seek out to find their own place in the universe and encounter adventure around every corner, all wrapped in Kirby's own, unique take on counter-culture (some of it satirically critical, but at times even admiring).
Really though, the content of the stories isn't the selling point, at least not to me. Rather, it's the Kirby execution. His story and art rarely became so directly tied to his imagination as during his seventies DC period. It was like Kirby just dreamed the pictures right onto the page. All of his seventies DC books are an absolute blast to read. Not that that Kirby ever did a bad comic in his life, you understand!
Recommended for those high on life!
A Represantation Of Its Era.......2004-12-26
If you need a crash course as to who Jack Kirby is and his contributions to the comic book medium, it is too long to list. Suffice to say that after revolutionizing this art form with Marvel Comics, Kirby signed on with DC to write, pencil and edit three interlocking titles which became known as "The Fourth World". Tales of God like beings who weilded both the forces of darkness and light in the perpetual battle of Good versus Evil. The characters of Mark Moonrider, Big Bear, Vykin The Black, Serifan and Beautiful Dreamer are cast members based on a youth generation which concerned Kirby in 1970.
The Forever People are a young generation of New Gods who with optimistic naiveté fight Darkseid and thwarts his goal for the Anti-Life Equation. Battling the minions of Apokolips in the form of the deprived DeSaad besides the propaganda mind controller, Glorious Godfrey, the Forever People are able to join in unison with their Mother Box and call upon The Infinity Man from another dimension to help out. A concept which appears to be at the base for Jim Starlin's idea of the Captain Mar-Vell/Rick Jones ability to switch forms from one dimension to another during the 1970s. Not to mention how another Starlin creation, Thanos, closely resembles Darkseid in posture and deeds.
We also get more proof that Kirby's imagination knew no limits. In an attempt to bring some novelty to Deadman whose series bit the dust, DC managed to get the character a guest-star appearance in the series. Perhaps the idea of a spirit inhabiting a robot body was not a saleable one at the time but it did have the merit of being an interesting concept if it would have been fully and properly explored. Unfortunately, any references to this moment in the character's history has been totally ignored since then in DC continuity.
In the introduction piece, Mark Evanier states that Jack Kirby's renditions of Superman in the first issue were redrawn by Al Plastino. This is quite evident and it is a decision that will always be rightfully questioned. Why tamper with an artist's drawing? If DC was so concerned about Superman resembling the established "Swanderson" version, why allow Kirby to use the character in the first place? Then again, this is one of the many injustices that Mr. Kirby endured throughout his career and lifetime.
Kirby was a master story teller but his dialogue and narration left much to be desired. This is quite evident with the mock hippie dialogue and narration throughout the book. However, Kirby was able to convey solid characterization as well as present some of the wildest ideas ever to be published in comic book form. I concur wholeheartedly that even before the "widescreen" presentation became the next wave of artistic rendition, Kirby managed to convey the sensibilities of a blockbuster sci-fi action film with his innovative angles and cinematic vision. Kirby broke the barriers and elevated the standards as to visual interpretations of a comic book story. Perhaps some of you may pass over this landmark edition because it is reprinted in black, white and greytone but you will do so with regret. Kirby's art is still as striking and dynamic as in its original colored version. That is how powerful and bold this creative genius' work still remains to this day.
Like any artistic endeavour created in any given era, Jack Kirby's Forever People is a representation of its time. To compare the dialogue, stories and production to today's standards is to demonstrate one's ignorance about the medium. There is a timeless quality to this intricate saga that deserves to be enjoyed and savoured by all self-proclaimed comic book fans.
Don't let the Black and White fool you!!!!.......2003-11-04
It's a shame this stuff came out in Black and White when it deserved color. Do you hear me DC????? Color!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This collection is worth it anyway. When Kirby wrote and drew this series his teen years were decades past and yet he managed to convey what youth wanted at that time wanted which was to make sense of things and to be counted for something. The usual Kirby Kosmic Space Opera unfolds and seldom is topped today.
A Galactic Trip worth taking!!!!
Its Kirby. What else is there to say?.......2003-09-11
Quite a lot actually. This is probably the least well known of Kirby's Fourth World. Still very good stuff. I liked the whole Fourth World saga except for the first half of Mister Miracle. Good story, good art. Its a wonder he managed to write and draw so much so fast without a noticable dip in quality. The stories are very plot-driven, not as much character development as some of his other work, but what plots! And of course, many new Kirby characters are introduced. A must have for any Kirby fan!
One fourth of Kirby's Fourth World ..........2001-08-03
I am waiting for Mark Evanier and the folk's at DC to realize Jack Kirby's Fourth World isn't complete without the DNA Project, Intergang, Dabney Donovan, the Evil Factory and ... well, the list goes on. Give us Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen! Granted, the 1st half of Kirby's run on the title wasn't the flagship for Kirby's Fourth World. The series really took off with the second half during the '25-cent, Bigger&Better' phase. So, come on DC, complete the reprinting of Kirby's Fourth World and introduce readers to some dynamite storytelling, Kirby style!
Book Description
This book fills a long-standing need in the literature: Voodoo, Santeria, and Macumba as practiced today in cities throughout the Western world. It is not another history or sociological study, but a candid personal account by two who came to "the religion" from the outside. It includes descriptions of the phenomena triggered by Voodoo practice, divination techniques, spells and a method of self-initiation. lllustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Book.......2007-03-19
I enjoyed the story of the authors personal journeys into voodoo. If you are already involved this book is probably way too basic for you but I'd say it's a great starter book.
Not completely convinced.......2007-01-29
Interesting ideas but the author spends too much time on details. The style is inconsistent and the ideas are not well developped. It's indeed a book for beginners but no secrets will be revealed here. The author spent three or four chapters criticizing over and over again christianity......who cares? Why not focusing on the main topic ?
In general, I have the impression the book was quickly made with the main intention to promote "pacts with the devil" (written by the same authors).
If you intend to do reseaches on voodoo, books like "the sacred arts of haitian vodou" by donald j. cosentino can be a good start to realize how art is important in this magical system and may be "secrets of voodoo" by Milo Rigaud.
This book is GARBAGE.......2007-01-20
This book sucked because its like an autobiography of some idiot who knew nothing about what he was doing...his book is mostly life-stories...and stupid ones at that...some teeter the line of racism, he emphasizes attempting to hex some evil "fat black woman" and he demonizes some other young brothers later on in the book, i see most of the reviewers overlooked the fact that this guy was kind of out of line with his emphasis on "race".
And besides that, his 2 or 3 spells and such are old and tired...and there is no "self-initiation" for the type of Voodoo he's talking about...
i am sorry but this book was a waste of time and money, i came away from this little book knowing not one single solitary grain of anything worth knowing. If you looking to learn about Voodoo or Vodun this book will not help.
His title is also misleading because "Voodoo" ussually refers to Hoodoo and "Vodun" ussually refers to the religion but this author isnt talking about either one....he's just running his mouth on and on and on as if his life-experiences are even worth tellin.
This book is a great example to why people of a foriegn back-ground to African based religions should not write books about it as if they could really know but so much.....this was a terrible book that this sorry author made about a system he obviously knows nothing about.
Very good Book on Voodoo.......2006-12-22
This book, while mostly about two people's journey into Voodoo, also gives a good overview of spirits and Loa used. It gives no bones about how pathetic the new religions are compared to elder counterparts.
WORST BOOK EVER!!!!!.......2006-12-12
VOODOO? SANTERIA? MAGIC? IF THIS IS WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR YOU WILL NOT FIND IT IN THIS BOOK!! WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP! I SHOULD OF CHUCKED IT IN THE FIREPLACE AFTER I READ THE PART ..."I SACRIFICED A RAT.."?!?!?!I AM SURE ALL THAT WORSHIP THE ORISHA WILL APPRECIATE THAT ONE! HA! THIS BOOK (AND I USE THAT TERM LIGHTLY)IS HORRIBLE. IT IS BASICALLY A PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF THIS GUYS JOURNEY (DUDE, GIMME SOME OF WHATEVER YOUR SMOKING!)WHICH AT TIMES IS SO PHONY, IT'S LAUGHABLE. IF CALLING THE ORISHAS, OR LOA OR MAGIC IN GENERAL IS AS EASY AS SAYING - HEY ELLEGUA, HERE'S SOME RAT BLOOD, GIMME SOME CASH AND THEN YOU FIND A WALLET, EXACTLY BY THE WAY, LIKE THE ONE YOU HAD LOST, WELL THEN-WHAT THE HELL ARE THE 99.9% OF US DOING WRONG? IF AMAZON HAD A NO STAR-THEN THIS BOOK WOULD GET IT!

Perfect basic home-made pasta.......2007-05-15
We love eating fresh pasta at home, and we are used to do it ourselfs...that's maybe the reason why I found this book a little bit too basic for us (if we were not so used, I would have rated it as 5 stars).
But in any case, I think it's the perfect book for those people who have never made fresh pasta at home! It has houndreds of pictures (no coloured) that show you the real italian way of making it!
Informative, illustrated, inspiring!.......2004-04-23
Most pasta books seem to spend a chapter on origins, a chapter on equipment and one little page - or less - on "basic" dough (usually with all purpose flour and eggs) and then fill the rest of the tome with sauce recipes. All well and good, but if you're looking for more, this book is one to consider.
While his basic recipe is the all purpose flour, egg and water recipe you will find in most books, he does include a section on making spinach pasta and another on using pasta secche (dried store bought made of semolina flour).
Mr. Bruno takes you step by step through the use of a manual pasta machine, rolling pin technique, several ravioli making methods, gnocchi, cappelleti and tortellini. My book (paperback, 1981) has black and white photos, but good quality such that all critical steps are well illustrated.
There are pasta sauce recipes and thankfully very little filler about the history of pasta, who first started using pasta, blah, blah, that you'll find in some other books. As Mr. Bruno puts it "This is a cookbook, not a history book...". Amen.
If you're in the market for a book on pasta making, I highly recommend this one for a good basic course. Thankfully, it is still in print (as of this writing) and easy to get your hands on.

Great beginner book!.......2000-10-22
Jan Foulke knows her dolls and provides interesting information about chinas. A great variety of chinas are presented, broken down by decades, from 1840's through 1930's. Photos provide side-views of fancy china heads for comparison of hairstyles. Basic information about manufacture, characteristics to look for when collecting and things to watch out for. A section is devoted to frozen charlottes. She also mentions Clear dolls and Ruth Gibbs dolls. Most photos are close-ups of the face/head, not full-view with clothing for those who are looking for costuming ideas. The only complaint is that the book is just too short!! Nice basic beginner book for the new china doll enthusiast.
A Must for Every China Doll Lover.......2000-03-26
What a wonderful book! Jan Foulke has outdone herself in this guide to china dolls. As a collector who is just tip-toeing into the world of these beautiful dolls, I was delighted to come across this helpful book. Ms. Foulke's book is filled with loads of details on identifying and dating your chinas, as well the most incredible photographs. The close-ups and comparisons of hairstyles of the various periods are invaluable to the new as well as the experienced collector. Having collected antique dolls for over 20 years, I was very familiar with the basics of china doll collecting. This book however, educates the collector in the fine art of collecting the china doll. If you don't absolutely love these dolls when you open the book, you will definitely want at least one for your collection by the time you finish!

Glad I bought this one - inspiring.......2007-10-14
This garndening book is very well worth the price and time invested. Its well written, easy and quick to read. I read it cover to cover. Unlike some gardening books which are reference books, this one will help the gardener who is trying to create a design that is personnal, charming and relevent to the space. Its all about creating the right mood and look for the site and tastes of the gardener. I was inspired and more confident to move forward in my landscape project.
Thought provoking and inspiring!.......2007-05-16
Have you seen a garden and loved it but perhaps couldn't quite explain what made it special? Have you been in your own garden and felt it needed "something" but didn't know what that something was?
I bought this book because it was recommended by a friend. Once I got it home, I read it and re-read it. Besides beautiful photos, this book is about garden design, especially regarding focal points. It's wonderful information presented in a way that is easy to understand. Once I read this book, which I still refer to often, I look at my own garden in different ways. It's seems like a discovery of a garden secret. It can take your garden to a higher level of enjoyment.

Book Description
Brody had a forming influence on graphic design in the 80s, Carson mixed images and texts in the 90s, and km7 is the man with the style codes for the next century. This book showcases the various missions he has accomplished for clients like Jam and Spoon, Volkswagen, Nike and Sony - within an overall design structure of covert Bond style operations. The book roller-coasters through his contemporary world of graphic design with top print quality and overall humorous design. The new designers' bible has been created.

license to inspire.......2001-08-20
this has to be the most amazing book on graphic design and the most telling of the power of its visual magic Klaus Mai delivers page after page of strong content: tight use of type and most whimsical images married to most sober vector art- a beautiful fusion of shapes and colours and movement in 2D
hardly is there another designer that is so fluid in his mastery of all the elements of design
an okay book for starters.......2001-06-18
nothing good about this book unless you love to stare at images of strange techno-babble mixed with lots of colorful shapes and the whole "graffitti-like" spread of design. it's more of a flip through graphic book than anything to really inspire.
Buy this book.......2001-06-02
His designs are the best that I have ever seen, period. This book is an inspiration to everyone who sees art as a concrete representation of one's core values. A love of existence and of everything that makes it great is prevalent on each page.
From japanese anime to techno to James Bond and back again, no worthy subject is left untouched.
Whether you are a designer or just a fan of image and art, this man knows his stuff. You should too.
Waste of Money.......2001-04-15
Don't waste your hard earned pesos on this one. The content and the designs of this book are unbearably corny. The quality of typography is embarrassing. There are so many inconsistencies in this book that it makes you believe that it was not proof-read before publication. If you are looking for a design book to buy, get "Soak Wash Rinse Spin."
Not to bad but..........2001-04-12
I picked up a copy about a month ago, I thought it was pretty cool, but he uses alot of the same elements in his design work. Actually he over uses them. To those that already blew their money on it, look at the designs, and count how many times he uses the same images over and over.
The layout is ok, some pages make me feel ill. What made me laugh was the spelling on the cover. "Licence to design", this guy neds a "LICENSE" to go back to school and learn to spell. I mean Licence is kind of a correct way of spelling it, but its uncommon. But hes KM7-Design Agent, so he has to be uncommon. 99% ego, .5% imagination .5% human.
Honestly, his work isn`t impressive at all.Shapes with manipulated images really isn`t that technical. Not to meantion he uses alot of dingbats.
