Book Description

In Dan Fesperman’s highly praised Lie in the Dark (“A quite astonishing first novel”—Ian Rankin), we met Vlado Petric, a homicide detective in Sarajevo, a war-torn place where life itself had little worth.
Now, five years later, Petric has escaped to join his wife and daughter in Berlin, and is scratching out a meager but stable existence at a construction site. So when he’s recruited by Calvin Pine—an enigmatic American investigator for the war crimes tribunal at The Hague—to join a search mission back in the ruins of his homeland, he finds it hard to resist. They’re seeking a general responsible for the massacre at Srebrenica, but Petric is also being offered as bait to lure another suspect whose activities in World War II make the current generation of killers look like amateurs. Getting hotter on a trail that eventually leads across Europe, Petric soon finds that great political powers make unsavory alliances, and that investigating the mysteries of the past can be as dangerous as navigating the war zones of the present.

A gripping novel about legends and lies, about great deceptions and personal truths, The Small Boat of Great Sorrows is a galvanizing detective novel in a vein that brilliantly transcends the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel is Solid, if Somewhat Less Distinctive.......2004-04-10

This sequel to Fesperman's excellent award-winning debut (Lie in the Dark) picks up Vlado Petric's story five years later, in 1998. We find the former Bosnian policeman in Berlin, where he was reunited with his wife and daughter, and has been working menial construction jobs. In a somewhat heavy-handed prologue, Vlado and his Polish construction mate unearth an old Nazi bunker while digging a trench. This serves notice to the reader that even as the foundation for a new Europe is being laid, the ugly past is always lurking just below the surface. Get it? In a more affecting early part of the story, we learn that Vlado's reuniting with his family (following the events of Lie in the Dark) was not quite the stuff of fairy tales. This ties in to a subplot in which he becomes entangled with a pair of fellow countrymen who swear to have seen a war criminal nearby. This leads him down an unlikely and unnecessary subplot, which links all too conveniently to the main story.

Things really gets going when an American lawyer working for the International War Crimes Tribunal offers Vlado a job as part of a team trying to capture a Croatian war criminal from World War II. This is all part of another unlikely and overly complicated scheme to swap him to the French if they arrest a Serbian war criminal from the more recent fighting. The carrot of a visit home and a possible job are dangled in front of him, and of course he accepts. The trip to Bosnia becomes wildly complicated and dangerous, unfortunately, the pitfalls are obvious to the reader well ahead of Vlado and his handler. The story continues in Rome, and veers into even more wild territory, as dark secrets from WWII hold the power to do significant harm even now. Fesperman's plotting draws upon various real events (the theft of gold from the Croatian treasury, the involvement of Catholic priests in helping war criminals gain new identities, etc.), but it rarely feels plausible.

Fesperman's strength lies in depicting modern Bosnia and the effects of the war upon its people. The book is at its most effective when focusing on Vlado and his family's life as refugees in Germany, or in showing Sarajevo recovering from the war. Unfortunately, most of the book deals in the past and ends up feeling like a Ken Follett or Robert Ludlum thriller. It's not bad, just not as distinctive as Lie in the Dark, but I'll definitely read the next installment in Vlado's story.

4 out of 5 stars The Crime Writers Ian Fleming Steel dagger Award Winner.......2004-02-27

Dan Fesperman's first novel was the highly regarded and John Creasey Memorial Dagger winner LIE IN THE DARK. Never before had I read such an all encompassing detailed account of life in war torn Bosnia. That book ended with the main protagonist, Detective Vlado Petric fleeing Sarejevo to join his wife and young daughter in Berlin. This book starts about five years later. The war is over but Bosnia lies in ruins. Petric, living in Berlin, makes a living working as a construction worker. He receives a visit from a mysterious American, Calvin Pine, who invites him to join in on an assignment for the International War Crimes Tribunal. They want Petric to capture a war criminal in Bosnia. The assignment sounds relatively well thought out and straightforward. He agrees but soon finds it much more than he bargained for. It also calls into question his own father's role in perpetuating atrocities during W.W.II.
The fact that this book was nominated for an Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award for best thriller is a bit of a surprise. This is definitely not a thriller. It is more appropriate a nominee in the Gold dagger category. The style of writing is much too careful and deliberate for a thriller. The pacing is languid but the descriptions, once again, are detailed and breathtaking. Bosnia is very different today than it was when we last visited it during the war. The resilience of the people is what makes this book linger in the mind. Dan Fesperman does not rush his books into print in that it has been four years since the last one. It is definitely well worth the wait.

4 out of 5 stars loved this book.......2004-01-26

A friend recommended this book and I was pleasantly surprised.
It kept my attention and kept me fully immersed from the beginning to end.Well written, interesting and well on par with other best selling crime/mystery writers.
Am looking forward to his next book.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Procedural/Thriller.......2003-12-28

This is a solid procedural/thriller set partly in post-war Bosnia. The hero is a former Sarajevo policeman, now a refugee in Germany. The structure of the story, which is based on a war crimes investigation, is structured as a combination police procedural/suspense thriller. Elements include not only war crimes in Bosnia but also WWII war crimes and the hero's discoversy of some murky family history related to the WWII war crimes. Decently written and plotted.

5 out of 5 stars The aftermath of war - criminals.......2003-11-13

In this sequel to Fesperman's affecting debut, "Lie in the Dark," it's five years after Bosnian police detective Vlado Petric's escape from war torn Sarajevo. Settled, though not easily, with his wife and daughter in Berlin, Vlado works construction and scrapes by. It's not an easy or satisfying existence, so when an American - Calvin Pine - from the war crimes tribunal at the Hague offers Vlado a job, he jumps at the chance.

All he has to do is help capture Pero Matek, an old Croatian war criminal from WWII, living profitably under an assumed name in Bosnia. The French want him in return for their help with a wanted Serbian general.

When Vlado is let in on the secret of how he was chosen for the job, his whole world is thrown out of kilter and the mission becomes personal. Which doesn't stop it from failing in spectacular fashion, and Matek slips away, as does the Serbian general. The cat-and-mouse chase is on, with various international interests weighing in.

Political compromise, cynicism and corruption dog this mission as Vlado and Pine pursue their man across borders and generations. Vlado, like (seemingly) everyone else, has his own guilty secret, which threatens his sleep and, increasingly, his safety. But the footing is uncertain everywhere and Fesperman keeps his characters hopping, dodging and feinting.

There's no glory in Fesperman's wars, just blood, death, survival and, for some, opportunism. Atmosphere and the shadowy corners of the human heart - even the best of human hearts - are integral to the plot. Character and circumstance are the primary motivators and Fesperman knows how subtly each can shape the other. A Berlin reporter during the Yugoslavian wars, Fesperman writes with authority, intelligence and grace.

      1 out of 5 stars A definite Wall-Banger.........2004-12-26

I enjoyed the second story in this anthology the most, as it lacked much of the redundancy and silliness that marked the other two. Mari's deep dark secret was laughable, and Tess was just TSTL (Too Stupid To Live).

The Unlikely Lover was a story that I forgot immediately after reading. Mari and Ward made no impression on me whatsoever. 3 Stars

The Princess Bride was much more readable. I enjoyed the interaction between King and Tiffany. I also liked the evil secretary (straight out of a 1930's serial!). 4 Stars

Now, the third story "Callaghan's Bride" is the one that made me decide to give this book one star. Alone, it would be a negative star book! Tess was irritating, Cag was a horrible individual that was completely unappealing (but his snake was nice- I would read a story about the snake in a heartbeat). Tess and Cag are "forced" to marry-Cag gets mad, Tess leaves and goes to St. Louis, a decided change from land-locked Jacobsville! Sure, St. Louis has a river (actually two) but you can't get more "land-locked" than Missouri (I lived less than one mile from the river, in Soulard)! Tess finds an apartment (rented by the week, nearly impossible in any city for an apartment that you would be able to live in) that's close to the job she found as a pastry chef (with no training and no experience) in a downtown hotel. No mention is made of the St Louis Arch, which is right on the river front, in downtown St Louis, yet Tess watches the barge traffic go by. There were so many flaws in this book that I was practically throwing it against the wall every time one of the numerous errors came up. Good thing I didn't or I would be paying for someone to fix multiple holes in my walls. -5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Best Romance Novel Ever!.......2004-03-25

This was the first Diana Palmer book I read, but definitely not the last! I love her stories of innocent young women who steal the hearts of these long, tall Texan cowboys. I just can't get enough of them! Start with Callaghan's Bride (it's the best, in my opinion) and then the other two. You will love them!

5 out of 5 stars THE WEDDING IN WHITE - HARLEQUIN EXCLUSIVE.......2003-01-11

THE WEDDING in WHITE is a Harlequin Exclusive and not this trilogy listed but had to let people know that this is an Excellent book also.

Mack Killain, twenty eight, had been responsible for raising his three siblings and has no desire to be tied down and no desire for starting over in raising children.

Twenty two year old sister, Vivian, who incidentally wants to go with a man who had acknowledged getting another girl pregnant. Of course Mack does not like the man. Then there is sixteen year old brother, Bob whom he advises, in a droll tone, to carry protection on his dates. And brother, Charles.

Natalie Brock is Vivian's best friend, and has a yen for Mack for years. She is also shocked to find out that the love of her high school life had gotten a long talk from Mack before going on a date. The young jock was killed shortly thereafter. And now Mack informs Natalie that her football hero only dated her on a bet.

Natalie also finds herself a bit jellous of Glenna, a free and willing woman that Mack sees when he needs a little free-for-all. Natalie doesn't know that Mack has been keeping his desire for her under strict control since she was seventeen and he was twenty-one.

Trouble was had by Natalie, Vivian and Mack [read it] and it took almost losing Natalie to bring Mack around and straighten out Vivian.

A great story - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- great addition to the Palmer collection.

      3 out of 5 stars Romantic.......2000-11-29

I love reading Diana Palmer's book. She is one of my favorite romance writer. If you love books about the strong hero, old fashion, and the heroine young, naive and virgin also old fashion, you will love diana's white wedding. six different characters pop out at you with different problems although sticking to the same themes, and after pain and suffering they end up together. I just wish that diana would write about successful women, with careers, who have spunk (but i like the virgin part/monogamous). I want to read about heros who are comfortable with women who are adventurous, challenging and talented and not intimidated by them. I also think that she should evolve and write about heroine and heros of different race. i'm black and i would love to read books about different races from my favorite author. I also recommend her Long Tall TExan series which follow in the plot of the above mentioned. If you are into the paranormal check out christine feehan dark series publish by lovespell, especially dark magic, dark prince and dark gold, of course you'll want to read the others, these books are great.

        Book Description

Set in post-9/11 New York City, Reena Spaulings was written by a large collective of writers and artists that bills itself as The Bernadette Corporation. Like most contemporary fiction, Reena Spaulings is about a female twenty-something. Reena is discovered while working as a museum guard and becomes a rich international supermodel. Meanwhile, a bout of terrible weather seizes New York, leaving in its wake a strange form of civil disobedience that stirs its citizens to mount a musical song-and-dance riot called "Battle on Broadway." Fashioned in the old Hollywood manner by a legion of professional and amateur writers striving to achieve the ultimate blockbuster, the musical ends up being about a nobody who could be anybody becoming a somebody for everybody. The result is generic and perfect -- not unlike Reena Spaulings itself, whose many authors create a story in which New York itself strives to become the ultimate collective experiment in which the only thing shared is the lack of uniqueness.

When Brother Wayne Teasdale took the naked plunge into the sacred Kavery River of India and renounced his possessions and former identity to become a Catholic monk, he expected to remain in the nirvanic atmosphere of the Shantivanam monastery. But hours later his teacher turned to him and said that his mission was not to remain in retreat, but rather to go home to America. "Without a doubt there is great value in spirituality that emphasizes and supports withdrawal from society," writes Teasdale. "But in our time, we require a spirituality of intense involvement and radical engagement with the world." By this he means taking on daily tasks, such as "earning a living, paying bills, saving money, getting along with others, being entertained, enjoying a healthy recreation, and learning how to interact with difficult people." At the same time, the monk must not succumb to "greed, indifference, insensitivity, noise, confusion, pettiness, unease, tension, irreverence." Of course, readers quickly catch on that he's describing the collective mission of humankind. A Monk in the World is the book that contemporary seekers yearn for--solid advice on how to live with spiritual values in a modern world. Teasdale covers the nuts and bolts: how to introduce periods of silence and solitude into daily life, cultivate spiritual friendships, create a spiritual workplace, and how to understand and respond to the world's suffering. Such guidance shows Teasdale at his best, a man committed to building a global "interspiritual" movement--where we all become monks in the world, collectively doing the right thing while honoring the many and diverse paths to God. --Gail Hudson

              Book Description

The Mystic Heart chronicled Brother Wayne Teasdale’s journey into a multifaceted spirituality blending his traditional Catholic training and the Eastern way of sannyasa (Indian monkhood). A Monk in the World tells what that journey has meant for him — living as a monk outside the monastery, integrating teachings from the world’s religions with his own Catholic training, combining his vigorous spiritual practice with the necessities of making a living, and pursuing a course of social justice in a major American city. In telling his story, Teasdale shows how others can find their own “internal monastery” and bring spiritual practice into their busy lives.

Has some good stuff in it, but it lost me in two ways:

              1. Throughout there is a subtle sense of pride. A flavor that he thinks he is *cool* and better than others. This is very subtle but I can taste it.

              2. But where he really lost me was what he says on page 45. Does he really believe that crap? He could cross the street without looking as a kid because *God* was protecting him. Uniquely him, not others, because obviously others get hit by cars, in accidents, death by war and drive by shootings. There are accidents, injury, death every day, but *God* wouldn't let anything happen to him! And as an adult *God* has also saved him. So, if you practice spiritual life according to his *God*, you won't get hurt, but *God* doesn't give a damn about people who don't practice, so they are the ones who get in all the accidents every minute of every day? So Mr. Teasdale, are you going to die from old age some day?

Reminds me of the sports figures who think *God* is specifically on their side. Yeah, *God* cares about the Giants but not the Dodgers. *He* has nothing better to do than watch you swing a bat!

I should have known after seeing that the forward was written by that pompous a** Ken Wilber.

How does one cultivate a spiritual life in the modern world? In 1986 the author accepted an invitation to visit a Benedictine monk living in India: his third visit prompted an invitation to take an Indian monkhood. His experiences as a monk and mystic make for thought-provoking, important reading.

              4 out of 5 stars Engaged Spirituality.......2002-07-27

Extending the message of THE MYSTIC HEART, Teasdale articulates a challenge to all of us to live our spirituality by engaging the world and it's many problems through the lovingkindness, compassion, mercy and justice at the core of the great spiritual traditions. The challenge is an important one during this period of spiritual awakening that we are experiencing, particularly in the USA. Self-centered spirituality ignores the core teachings of Jesus, Buddha, and so many others regarding selfless love and service. His challenge is nothing less than to change the world, to create "a civilization with heart!"

In doing so, he describes a variety of spiritual practices and perspectives, punctuated with personal and other stories. He then articulates a number of critical social needs, focusing on some of his personal passions: homelessness, oppression of Tibet, and world violence.

He also critices the Catholic Church for its failures to fulfill the Christian message of compassion and service in the world, particularly for the poor and oppressed in Tibet, China, and elsewhere. In the end, Teasdale offers a challenge to the Church to be the "matrix" or model for the interfaith dialogue and "a new human order."

The book includes numerous suggestions for each of us to engage our spirituality in the world through compassionate action and service. It is an important message for the new millennium.

              5 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2002-07-12

Read this book if you hunger for more than just the daily grind. Teasdale will light the lampost to the formation of the interior silence. A great book by a man who is not afraid to share his vision and experience.

4 out of 5 stars For the monk in each of us........2002-05-30

Combining the spiritual traditions of Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism, Brother Wayne Teasdale is a "monk in the world, a sannyasi who lives in the midst of society, at the very heart of things" (p. xx). Addressing readers who aspire to be "engaged in the world," but free from its "greed, indifference, insensitivity, noise, confusion, pettiness, unease, tension, and irreverence" (p. xxii), he explores the questions: "Is it possible for the masses of humanity, who do not live in monastic seclusion, to activate the monk within? Are we capable of realizing the mystical life here in the world, in the midst of so much frantic activity?" (p. xxvii). In his 237-page book, Brother Wayne shows that, although our culture "is burdened by a steady stream of chatter that reflects a noisy mind and a cluttered heart," it is possible "to live a secular life of integrity and quality, depth and creativity" (pp. 20-21).

Teasdale's book is complemented by an insightful Foreward in which Ken Wilber writes, "this is a beautiful, wonderful, wise book that gently touches and compassionately evokes the deep spirituality in all of us. But more than that, it further invites us--challenges us--to carry that awakened spirituality into the world, thus integrating inner life with outer life, drenching both in a radiance from the realized heart that allows grace the room to do its divine work" (p. xiii). Those readers who connect with Wilber's integral philosophy will enjoy this book.

Teasdale recognizes that there is a mystic in each of us (a monk dwells in each of our depths, just below our everyday awareness," p. 215), and looks to other monks in the world including Thomas Merton, the Dalai Lama, Bede Griffiths, Thomas Keating, and Thich Nhat Hanh to exemplify just what a life of truly integral spirituality might mean to us. "For me," he writes in summary of his book, "the mystical path means awakening this monk within and nurturing its development in encountering the world. This path is reinforced by spiritual practice, with its breakthroughs and graces; supported by like-minded friends, with their love and challenges; empowered by thoughtful navigations through the limitations of time, work, and money. It means living with compassion and love in the concreteness of daily encounters, especially with the most vulnerable. It means taking risks for the sake of justice, which requires us to speak the truth boldly, clearly, and firmly to power in all its forms, especially the political, economic, and religious" (p. 215). This book will appeal to Christian and Buddhist readers alike, and anyone who aspires to live a life of values in the modern world.

This is a wonderful book. All dollhouse collector's would benefit by owning it. Not only is it a very lovely, informative, hardback book, it has beautiful pictures with discriptions of dollhouses and accessories. The layout is great, making it easy to find the item along with a price guide. Dian Zillner has written three previous dollhouse books and one on toy buildings (some have been co-authored by Patti Cooper). All of these books are a great asset to the dollhouse lover's library.

4 out of 5 stars good little book.......2007-03-13

Book is nice and small, can easily be taken places and worked with. As with any project pattern book, some are good patterns, and some patterns you would most probably never use. People are different, though, and may like the patterns I didn't. I would use about 3/4 of the patterns myself, and I do like the size and convenience.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Knitting Ideas.......2007-01-15

I love all of the "Vogue Knitting on the Go" series, and this one is just as much fun. Besides using novelty yarns, this book offers some terrific stitch patterns as well. Projects for begginner through advanced, these patterns are not fast, but they are beautiful. I've made several as gifts, and they are classic and unique - not trendy. Worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Vogue Scarves are the "way to go".......2007-01-09

New twist on the knitted scarf scene. If you like to make scarves and are getting bored with the same old patterns, this is the book for you.
                  Cheers to Vogue!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of variety.......2006-12-22

I'm a fairly new knitter and unlike a lot of pattern books, this one was very accessible to me with a range of projects from simple to complex. I've done one of the simple ones already and have my eye on some of the fancier ones to try once my skills have advanced a bit more. I love the small size; it fit easily right into my knitting bag so I could take it with me (yes, I did refer to it periodically even though the pattern I was doing was simple). The only issue I had was the pictures don't show the back side of the scarves; as a new knitter, I can't yet visualize how the reverse will/should look.

1 out of 5 stars nothing that I saw made me thinks " wow, I want to knit that.......2005-06-02

I think that patterns from this book is not attractive, not in style and some are even ugly. Just ordinary, nothing special check, stripe, cable, some lace. Really nothing that I saw made me thinks " wow, I want to knit that". And some patterns are really "cheating". With the simplest stitch and special yarns like thick and thin or muti- colors. I meant who needs a pattern book to knit stuff like that. I think this book is only good for those who are new to scarves knitting. If not, you probably can come up with something better on your own. I recommand " Vogue knitting accessorize", more than 50 very lady like, classy, stylish patterns for scarves and hat, ponchos, mittens and a few formen's.

5 out of 5 stars Small, but Useful.......2004-12-28

Like the other vogue knitting on the go books, this is a very small, but a useful book. Don't let the small package fool you! It has several beautiful knitting patterns, all scarves look classy, and many are easy to make. I recommend this book, if you like other vogue knitting on the go books, or want to make stylish scarves.

                  Book Description

The newest Hip Hotels volume focuses on winter sports and stylish places to stay. With ever more people enjoying the thrill and the spectacle of the mountains, the choice of ski hotels has become enormous, yet they are overwhelmingly mediocre. Now Herbert Ypma proves that there are alternatives to the tired formulae of the typical resort hotel, no matter what your destination might be.

The Plumpjack Inn in Squaw Valley, California, is a fantasy of burnished metal and heraldic style: an unlikely eclectic success. Aspen Meadows in Colorado offers the finest in up-to-the-minute luxury. Or maybe you'll prefer the romantic haven of Sundance, Robert Redford's unspoiled Utah retreat, where you can unwind in your own mountain cottage after a long day on the slopes. The recently renovated H&244; tel des Dromonts in the French Alps is a wonder of sixties organic style in a building shaped like a fir cone. Or experience the views from the Hotel Ancora in Cortina d'Ampezzo, one of the world's original ski resorts, amid the jagged peaks of Italy's Dolomite mountains.

Remote lodge in the Canadian Rockies or Wild West authenticity, alpine log cabin or sleek contemporary style—the possibilities are amazing. Hip Hotels Ski adds a whole new dimension to adventures in the snow. 500 photographs, 400 in color.

                                        Book Description

Bergman is a most versatile director who has devoted himself to several muses in a variety of media. Apart from being a writer of plays and screenplays, he has over the past fifty years directed about a hundred stage performances, fifty films, and many works for radio and television. During this time, all the production equipment used have undergone significant changes (allowing, just for instance, a more varied and subtle use of light and sound). But by his own admission, Bergman's texts have often lacked a clear orientation toward a specific medium.

This book focuses on Bergman's way of tackling the problems inherent in each art form he has dealt with, giving a penetrating picture of his craftsmanship and the intimate relationship between his work on stage and in film, as well as the possibilities and limitations of the various forms. With the varied media at his disposal, Bergman is internationally the most versatile author-cum-director presently at work, well aware of what each medium can and cannot do and, most importantly, eager to test its borders. The book addresses itself not only to Bergman fans but also to all those interested in the aesthetic problems related to different presentational forms.
