Book Description
These stories explore Buddhist themes, while introducing the Western reader to the richness of Vietnamese culture. Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the world’s most popular teachers of Buddhism and meditation. He is also the author of many works of poetry and fiction. The Stone Boy is a new collection of his short fiction. Thich Nhat Hanh’s clear, contemplative spirit illuminates these stories, which are mostly of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. Combining traditional Vietnamese tales with accounts of the contemporary suffering of the Vietnamese people. Now, at a time when America has opened up again to Vietnam, this important collection can inform and illuminate readers. Seven of the stories have appeared in previous collections, The Moon Bamboo and The Pine Gate, which are both now out of print.

Meditative.......2003-05-08
The Stone Boy and Other Stories is a anthology of short narratives by Thich Nhat Hanh. Thich Nhat Hanh's writing brings together elements of Vietnamese legend and juxtaposes them with stories of the terrible atrocities meted out on the Vietnamese for the duration of and subsequent to its hostilities with France and the US. Thich Nhat Hanh, therefore, is a creation of his individual involvement in Vietnam's very recent history. Not much is really written about Thich Nhat Hanh - in terms of his private life and involvement and this is a great entrée into his mystery.
Thich Nhat Hanh uses heaps of farming metaphors and stories. His stories revolve mostly around the notion of "mindfulness," of become aware of things deeply, as in a really profound way, which is fundamental to a Buddhist conception of enlightenment. Thich Nhat Hanh's tales time after time highlight the import of "true seeing." Thich Nhat Hanh focuses on transcendence rather than anguish. Thich Nhat Hanh gives readers an opening for profound meditation. The eleven stories in The Stone Boy are come with brief commentaries as to their source and are helpful not only for the reason that it gives insight into the historical or spiritual contexts but they moreover provide proof of Thich Nhat Hanh's immense skill as a writer and understanding of complex items through his Upaya (skillful means). This book is a must for every collection.

The Stone Boy and other stories.......2002-11-10
I love all of Thich Nhat Hanh's books. He writes about Buddhism, human rights, and personal healing from trauma in a universal and clear way. This book is especially beautiful. These are fictional stories that show Vietnamese culture, and Thich Nhat Hanh's own experiences. He transforms incredible pain into beauty that teaches deep truths.

So how does it end?.......2005-07-28
As a big fan of Rudolfo Anaya's -Bless Me Ultima-, I picked this book up hoping for another escape into the Mountains of Northern New Mexico's past. I wasn't disappointed. Eduardo's story is engaging, and the characters intriguing. However, the end of the book left me hanging - I think Gallegos had plans to continue this saga - at least I hope so - because there are just too many questions left unanswered about the characters and events so far. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book very much.

Excellent!.......2006-06-21
THE SEDUCTION OF SHAY DEVERAUX is a wonderful account of Shay a.k.a. Gaeton Deveraux of Louisiana and his trials of finding love and coming home and making a place for himself in the reconstruction era. Be sure to follow up with the Deveraux family in THE MARRIAGE AGREEMENT.
EXCELLENT!.......2002-02-14
This is an excellent follow-up to MAGGIE'S BEAU.
We find out what happens to Shay [turns out to be a Devereaux] a year later after he leaves Beau Jackson's ranch.
Shay Devereaux finally gets around to looking up Jenny Pennington, the wife of his friend Carl. This is four years after Carl's death in the prison camp.
Shay finds Jenny, a woman he could possibly learn to love, trying to hold onto her husband's plantation for their little son, Marshall.
Marshall and Jenny walk into Shay's damaged heart without his being aware of it. Jenny and Marsh seduced Shay with unconditional love.
Isabel and Noah and their sons are helping Jenny to hang onto the plantation after the war and are just barely making ends meet.
Although Shay refuses to talk about his past -- we eventually find out what happened when he left Beau and Maggie and how the prison camp scarred his life.
Shay reluctantly starts to build a family with Jenny and Marsh. Then includes Jonah, Jenny's father and finally his own family, LeRoy Devereaux and Letitia, his mother and father and brother, Roan Devereaux and his wife Katherine and little Jeremy. It turns out to be a wonderful family gathering.
these three books are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and a great addition to your library. Keepers all.

Book Description
Beyond the world we know there is a multiverse of Modes where many strange realities interlock in an infinitely intricate pattern, and a perverse and deranged Emperor plays a deadly multidimensional game with human pawns as his slaves.
Now, with DoOon Mode, Piers Anthony at last delivers the breathtaking climax to this awesome saga. Fearing the heroine Coleen's dawning power, the depraved Emperor Ddwng dispatches a terrible Mind Monster to assault her soul and bend her to his will. To protect herself, and those she loves, Coleen must journey back through many worlds to her own home on Earth, face her deepest and darkest fears, and draw the strength for a final confrontation to save the multiverse from tyranny and domination.
Customer Reviews:
sexist garbage.......2005-08-07
There is a kind of book, I particularly dislike. In it the main character is pretty, sexy, intelligent, resourceful, etc., etc., as well as sexually appealing to every single character of the opposite sex regardless of how inappropriate this is. The character may have a single flaw - but nothing that interferes with the pretty, sexy, intelligence. The author goes to exhaustive pains to make this clear to the reader.
This is such a book. We learn over and over and over that the character has a sexy body (she's 14) and is pretty. Why? Who knows? Maybe the author was in love with her himself. We get descriptions of the character's body ad nauseam. In very little time, I longed to throw the book across the room.
There isn't much action, just traveling from different Modes, but nothing really serious in the way of danger. The heroine deals with some painful memories by reliving them, and the way they are described seemed unnecessarily graphic. If you ask me, the writer wasn't sure whether he was writing a porn novel or a sci-fi/fantasy book.
The other characters have little distinguishing traits (except that they are Good or Evil, but always, always in love with the protagonist). The resolution with the parents and the protagonist was too good to be true and really read like a bad fantasy scene in a teen's imagination.
Over all, I found myself thinking: Who cares? Repeatedly.
Skip this one. Please.
DoOon Mode.......2004-11-08
Theirs would be an ideal romance if it were not for a variety of issues- Colene is a teen ager and Darius and adult, Darius, as king must marry a woman he can draw joy from- and Colene is locked in melancholia, and there's an insane emperor who wants to destroy them. Other than that, Colene and Darius have a perfect love. However, now they have a few more allies in overcoming these obstacles. Clones of themselves banded together with human/animal beings who are part of the emperor's game will help them try to beat the odds, along with the friends who have gone with the couple through the modes of reality on their quest. In this exciting, quirky and strangely hopeful novel, once more Piers Anthony makes use of the greatest magic of all- love, to defeat unimaginable evil.

Not as good as the other books in the series........2003-07-02
We get a conclusion, but it is unsatisfactory. I feel that the last few pages was hurried and not planned as good as they could have been.
But I guess that any finish is better than none.
Since I have read all the other books by Piers Anthony I know that he can do better.
Read the book. But dont expect too much.
Dissappointment to Anthony fan.......2002-05-11
As an Anthony fan for 19 years I was deeply dissappointed in this book. It was not as well crafted as previous books in the series and the characters and plot lacked cohesion. I particularly disliked the inclusion of the rape and child abuse scenes - they added nothing to the plot and could have been handled better.
Haven't read yet but will..........2001-12-29
From what I read in previous reviews, it sounds like Piers Anthony used a bit of all his books: Xanth, Apprentice, and Geodyssey. I agree that Piers Anthony has grown more in the past years, with writing all those books you have to. In the past few years he started the Geodyssey series-that may be the reason for the sex scenes in this book. But this book sounds like it explains the questions about Colene that arose from previous books. So of course this book should be based on more thought and flash back. Sometimes it's also good for the author to throw off the readers in the final book. It adds a different touch of flare-or just different from the rest.

Review-All About Doll Repair & Care: A Guide to Restoring Well-Loved Dolls.......2007-06-28
Very little information about restoration of composition dolls. Author seemed to promote selling her cleaning products vs utilizing common every day products. Adequate information about quick fixes for hard plastic & vinyl dolls.
All About Doll Repair and Care.......2007-05-25
The book was pretty elementary. Most directions referred to using the author's products.
Good, but there is better........2006-11-05
I bought this book because you can never know too much about repairing dolls. Everyone has a hint or two that you haven't thought of yet. The best basic doll repair book out there, in my opinion, is still Marty Westfall's book on Doll Repair and Restoration. But, this book is a good basic start and has good pictures. Just not as detailed as you might need.
Great work book.......2006-08-01
This book had exactly what I needed to know to repair my 54-year-old doll. Although her restoration is incomplete, I feel that it gives me the knowledge to forge ahead and finish the job.
All About Doll Repair & Care.......2004-05-06
This book is for the very basic beginner. It does not have sections on eye repair for vintage dolls--the rocker type. It covers very little on composition dolls. She endorses products and procedures that serious doll doctors advise against. Such as using starch in doll clothes and she doesn't hesitate to mix doll parts. Basically, the book is an adorsement of a cleaner product the author sells.

Customer Reviews:
I loved it!.......2006-05-01
It is hard to write a review on this book as someone who has been crafting for quite some time. I cannot help but constantly view this book the same way I did when I first purchased it. I actually saw a review of it in some magazine when I was little, took the review out of the magazine (doctor's office), and kept it with me for years until I found it as a teenager. I bought it that day and suggested it to everyone I knew. I'm trying to think of it in terms of a fairly experienced crafter, but all I can think of is how that book changed me when I was young. It was quirky, fun, and projects ranged from simple to challenging. I think it was meant for those in their 20s who wanted a little vintage sass and kitch since some projects were a little dangerous (cut glass + tin snips) for the young. It was still very inspiring for me as someone who was new to DIY and crafting. This book is probably not so inpiring to the older set of DIY/indie crafts kids, but for beginners or middle-range skill sets (or those looking for a Brini Maxwell-esque craft book), this is it! I love this book so much, I still re-read it and find it whimsical, charming, and inspiring.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2004-09-10
This was the first craft book that I have bought in a long time. I wasn't sure what to expect but all the reviews that I read on it were great. So I decided to take a chance and buy the book, and I am glad that I did! The projects are creative and easy to change to your style, there are no "rules" for making these projects, the instructions are mainly just guidelines. Just use your imagination and have fun.
Kitchy Crafty.......2003-12-26
O love this book! Its got a lot of cool things that you can make from stuff you find dumpster diving for you first apt! This book is great for kitchy crafty type people!
Kitsch-o-rama!.......2003-05-07
The DIY (Do It Yourself) and straightedge punk movements have embraced crafting as creative expression and a means for bartering. This book could very well be their bible. Very little skill and a lot of kitschy [material] can evolve into cool projects. Fake flowers line a bike basket, bottle caps trim a frame, buttons cover a vintage bustier, and old school iron-on t-shirts become a quilt. The book itself is a lush work of art, lined with marbled sparkly paper, bound in spirals, and adorned with retro graphics.
Funky!.......2003-02-09
Well I haven't done much of the projects here except for about 3 of them. It's a good book, though. I learned how to use all my junk and make them into something that really is an eye-catcher. I'd recommend this to anyone with a crafty mind!

Customer Reviews:
Not much for creative ideas. I returned my book..........2005-09-15
I was hoping to receive a book full of creative ideas for my daughter's room. What I ended up with was a book full of blah rooms. It just didn't seem like a book that is meant to give ideas by showing actual rooms. The pictures that were shown were only of one side of the room. There is A LOT of writing--not something I look for in a decorating book! There were very few decorative painting techniques or theme rooms. Most of the pictures are of frilly, wallpapered, rooms with canopy beds. Many of the pictures featured rooms with built-ins (bookcases, or beds, or window seats). The majority of bedrooms I have ever seen do not have any of these items. The author seems to go on tangents for much of the book--sections such as "designing family spaces" where they tell you how to layout a kitchen, or "Outdoor play areas" where they tell you about swing sets...
Nice colorful rooms....good ideas.......2005-09-13
This book has nice color in rooms and will give you some good ideas whether you use paint or wallpaper.

If you have children and are considering redecorating their rooms, you MUST HAVE this book! The details and suggestions are wonderful. There are even lots of helpful hints and project ideas which are practical and easy to do. I have rarely found so many unique ideas on decorating children'ts room all in one place. Especially appealing is the use of "real" children using their thoughts, ideas and actual rooms. A book well-worth referring to over and over again!

Customer Reviews:
Inspiration.......2007-07-20
I always enjoy when this book comes out. It is always chock full of logos that encompass many different design styles by some of the leading design firms in the country. After looking through this, I feel the design juices flowing and inspiration comes easy.
quantity, not quality.......2007-07-10
I recently ordered this book for our advertising agency. At a previous job, I had often used the first Big Book of Logos (white background on cover) as a reference for inspiration and looked forward to having a similar resource at this job. I ordered version 4 since I had so thoroughly used version 1 and wanted to see some new logos. Indeed, it turned out to be a big, fat book of logos, very similar to version 1. However, I was disappointed by the lackluster quality of some of the work included. This may be due in part to my eye as a designer improving since I was first dazzled by version 1 freshly out of college, but I think the more likely explanation is that the overall logo quality of version 4 is inferior to version 1. That being said, it's still a great resource to look through to get the juices flowing and to find ideas for different treatments and I will likely continue to reference it often.
Not that strong..........2006-10-29
I was actually really disappointed with this book. With as many good reviews as it got, I was very excited at the prospect of buying it. I (thankfully) went to the store to review it before purchasing. Yes, there are a lot of logos to glean ideas from, but most of the logos presented are weak and really could have been simplified or refined more. Two books of much stronger logos (which I bought instead of this) are Logos: From North to South America by Pedro Guitton, and LogoLounge: 2,000 International Identities by Leading Designers by Bill Gardner and Catharine Fishel.
Logo? Logo!.......2006-03-22
We can all use some inspiration, especially when it comes to logo design. If you are tired of your own doodles and your garbage can is starting to fill up with crumbled paper - look no further - David E. Carter's The Big Book of Logos 4 is the right vehicle to jumpstart your tired grey matter. If you are a designer or even the one who would hire a designer to create your logo, this book is a great source of inspiration. It features hundreds of examples from all walks of life and business, product and service. And since logos in many cases are used for more than just a business card and letterhead, the most interesting thing for me was, that the book is also interspersed with many real life product examples: logos come alive on package designs for energy drinks, soap, snacks, wine, vodka, shrimps, coffee, or you see them end up as billboards for bars, coffee houses and corporations, and we see examples where they cross over to merchandise and websites. It reminds us: know what you design for - logos have to be versatile and have to work for many media. Looking through this book, I'm often fascinated by the smart, effective and often simple solutions a designer has come up with and yet everybody who designs logos knows that we can sometimes be so close but walk in circles to get "It" right. That's when The Big Book of Logos 4 comes in handy. It gives our spent visual juices some greatly needed visual oasis. Get lost, be overwhelmed, by the cheer amount of logos and let them revive your senses. Feel inspired, stimulated and finally motivated. If you are like me, you may be surprised to find yourself think "I can do that!" - and then get that crumbled paper back out of the garbage!
Great Gift.......2006-02-15
I got this book as a Valentine's Gift! And I'm thrilled because I've been wanting it for a while. It has one of my logos published in it! Yeah! (you should buy it!)
Like any other logo book, it provides all sorts of great inspiration for your own creations. It's also quite sturdy and will hold well as a bookend to house all your other design books! :o)

Customer Reviews:
A Very Original Compendium Of Design.......2007-03-25
"Letterhead and Logo Design 4" is a great collection of contemporary graphic design. There is a brief introduction that touches on the importance of the intertwining of logo, letterhead, and body copy as integrated design elements, but beyond that the book is largely a visual feast for people interested in graphic design. The book focuses on letterhead and business cards, but also explains in brief captions the thoughts of the designers on the logos, fonts, and overall designs. There is a useful index and directory of participating designers at the end of the book, should you wish to contact any of the entities or designers represented.
There are many outstanding and original designs depicted, and anyone looking for concepts for printed corporate materials would be well served by studying this book. I especially enjoyed the choices of multiple hues used in the work of Kelly O. Stanley, Rick Tharp, and Melissa Passehl. Some of the more graphically intense efforts, such as the letterhead designed by Rick Eiber for The American Institute of Graphic Arts, 1995 National Design Conference, might be a bit avant garde for many, but I appreciated them, as well. I was likewise blown away by many of the relatively stark designs that showcased colors and fonts in unusual ways; I was especially taken by the letterhead designed by Ciro Giordano.
This is a great reference for graphic artists, designers, and individuals or companies with an eye towards a new corporate image, and I highly recommend it to all those audiences.
very useful for a professional.......2002-10-16
There are no explanations in this book. So you can use it only if you are completely understand the purpose of the design. Very good as a source of ideas. A little old, but still good for those who are on the edge.
beautiful!.......2000-08-02
This book is absolutely incredible -- hundreds of stunning designs for all types of businesses. Large, beautiful color photos of entire corporate identity sets (logos, letterhead, envelopes, etc) and close-ups of black and white logos. Flipping through the pages gave me lots of inspriation for my clients, and a couple of great ideas for redesign of my own company pieces. You won't be sorry if you buy this one.
Great Ideas.......2000-07-09
This is a very colorful presentation of letterheads and logos. Each page has a large picture of the letterheads and business cards -- makes it easy to view and spur ideas. Each page is dedicated to only one letterhead design - so you can see the details!
It is an excellent collection of letterheads and logos........1998-02-25
This book is a good idea starter. From looking at what others have come up with, you begin to come up with ideas of your own. It is very colorful and professional...Jasmine
