An Anglophile's Must-Read.......2007-10-09
Susan Higginbotham has created an intricate and substantial tapestry of English life in the fourteenth century. The Traitor's Wife recounts the history of the reign of Edward II and the beginning years of his son's reign. The story revolves around Edward, the likeable king who was nevertheless not strong enough to hold the loyalty of his people, and Isabella, his beautiful but icy young Queen. However, the central character is a relatively unknown person from history: Eleanor de Clare, granddaughter of Edward I and, when the story opens, thirteen year old bride to an up-and-coming young commoner, Hugh le Despenser.
Ms. Higginbotham writes in a clear and precise style, and her subject has been painstakingly researched. The author's clarity is particularly helpful considering the legions of characters who all bear the same names. There are scads of Edwards, Eleanors, Isabels, Joans, and Hughs. In addition, half the cast bears a title as well as a given name, and their habit of intermarrying means that everyone is related to everyone else. Thankfully, Ms. Higginbotham skillfully guides the reader through the complexities of these relationships until we know the people well enough to tell them apart. It wasn't until I realized that I had grown to know all the characters that I truly appreciated the author's skill.
The Traitor's Wife is the story of a king who loves intemperately and unwisely, showering his lovers with gifts and favors which bring doom upon their heads. It is the story of a queen who exacts psychological and physical revenge for the humiliation of being loved second-best. It is a story of men who stop at nothing to obtain and hold onto power, selling out their integrity, their friends, and even their bodies. And it is the story of how one woman's loyalty - to her husband, her king, and her family - is tested by fire.
I have given The Traitor's Wife 5 stars with this caveat: it is not a quick or light read. However, for Anglophiles and those with a particular interest in English history, it is a must-read. Once engaged, you will find yourself compelled to learn more about this tumultuous time of British history and wondering how, with leaders like these, the country of England ever survived the middle ages!
A Solid First Outing for Higginbotham.......2007-09-13
This is a fascinating tale of treachery and intrigue, focusing on the life of Eleanor De Clare who married Hugh le Despenser. Hugh's ambitions embroil him in the life of Edward II of England and eventually lead to his downfall. As several reviewers have already summed up the story, I need not recap it again.
This is a complicated tale, with many characters with the same names so you do have to pay close attention, although the author does provide a list of characters at the front of the book. This is not a period of English history I have read before and I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in Eleanor's tale. Side note, having recently read Nigel Tranter's The Bruce Trilogy it was an extra treat seeing that part of the story from the English perspective.
Although I found Eleanor to be an engaging topic, I like other reviewers found her to be a tad bit too perfect -- I mean really she should have known what Hugh was up to! Or maybe not, we'll never know. All in all a very enjoyable read and one I would recommend for any lover of historical fiction or those interested in this time period.
for the history buffs.......2007-09-03
I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, so I was pretty excited to read this book. As far as historical fiction goes this book had a lot of pluses...but I guess I wanted something different from it, because I wasn't enthralled the way I had hoped to be. The writing is very accurate and thorough, and the characters have personality...you're able to become immersed in the story and become involved with the characters. I just found my mind wandering fairly often. I'm pretty sure that much of my problem with the story was my own bias and disinterest in that particular portion of history. I can't keep all the King Edwards straight, I can't keep the dates straight...and as a result, I never fully became engrossed with the story.
As I mentioned, the writing itself is superb--the author has definitely done her research (then again, the facts could be all wrong and I'd never realize the difference..) and her characters are well developed and likable. I just found the story a little too long and drawn out for my liking. But that's me. I don't want you to read this and think I'm giving it a negative review, because I'm not. Not even close. It just wasn't my cup of tea. However, as a piece of literature its incredible...so long as its something that you're interested in.
If you enjoy historical fiction -- especially in relation to King Edward and his reign, this is definitely a book you should check out. I'd highly recommend it to the history buffs.
The Traitor's Wife.......2007-07-14
The Traitor's Wife is a fictional tale based upon the real life, genealogical records, and whispered gossip of Edward II of England. This tale gets right into the hearsay of Edward and Piers Gaveston's special relationship right at the opening of the action. The book even has the two discussing the need to produce heirs and determining an appropriate match for Piers. Infighting, schemes, and scandals continue throughout the rest of the entire story. This book definitely shows a more private, hidden face of Edward and his peers than most works written about this time period.
As I first started reading this book, I was really glad that the author had included crib notes describing who each person was and their relationship to others in the story. After a while though, I found it much easier to figure out who was who. This was particularly true of those main characters that always seem to be at the thick of the latest melodrama.

Viva Las Vegas!.......2004-10-19
This was a pretty good book. A lot better than Dark Side of the Sun was. And it made the time between the end of Season Four and the new Miniseries that premiered 10/18/04 that much shorter. I just wish they could make a real Farscape novel. A story vast that went on for 600 pages or so. That would be so good!
Anyways the story was really good and the author really got the characters and what they act like down pretty good. I loved how Jon Critcton spent the whole book trying to remember the lyrics to Viva Las Vegas. that was great. We got Chaiana's thieving slinkyness down and D'argos anger down and Rygel's greed down. He ends up losing Moya in a card game and the crew must go through many twists and turns and also avoid death and imprisonment to get Moya back.
This was a fun book, if too short to read. I've read it to tatters waiting for a return of Farscape. And it has come back. If you build it, they will come. The fans have persevered over the dorks at the scifi channel who were probably on drugs when they cancelled it. Anyways, good book!
Poor.......2004-05-16
I love Farscape. The acting, the sets, the story, everything about it. This book, however, is not very good.It's very awkward, the characters aren't like them selves. They say odd things and the whole book is kinda silly. The story is poor and feels like a VERY bad suspense movie. This book is only for people who are obsessed with Farscape(like me) and will read it once and then keep it on your shelf. I recommend reading it, but it's not worth reading over one time.

DeCandido was fairly spot on with characterization. Easy read. Afterward you felt like you had just experienced an episode. Pick it up!
You Can't Always OutCheat the Cheaters!.......2003-12-19
While testing his Farscape module, the astronaut John Crichton is shot through a wormhole and deposited in another part of the galaxy. While floating powerlessly in space soon thereafter, a freak accident finds him killing the brother of a Peacekeeper commander and running with a ship (a living ship) full of escaped Prisoners and one (thanks to him) Peacekeeper that can't go back to her ranks. Add in a person they've rescued along the way, some changes in the enemy but not in the "run away" premise, and you've worked your way up to the book.
Liantac is a gambler's paradise and one of the crown jewels in the middle of nowhere. According to Rygel, expert on all things fun, he's always wanted to go there and would have gone before except for a slight problem. There's been a little woe that wouldn't allow for travel to the planet with ships. After being sought after, told they'd be paid well for taking someone there, and reassured that biomechaniod ships function in its atmosphere, the crew agrees (some reluctantly) they can get supplies while planetside. Taking a deposed figurehead into a place like that can result in some problems, however, just like taking an Ex-Peacekeeper can drudge up some old problems. Yeah, its just like old times.
One thing I liked about this in light of the series and its departure is that this captured the Farscape feel rather well. Keitch R. A. DeCandido seems to know the series, and he certainly understands the motivations behind the characters. While reading along, he briefs you on the people therein much like the show would do, keeping them feeling like the series always does. He also knows his timeframe, too, and must have followed the series while working on this book. According to the author, it is set toward the end of season 2, between the episodes "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "The Locket." Knowing that and watching a few DVDs from that timeframe helps plugs into it rather well.
If you're like me and you still miss Farscape, then this isn't a bad way to find a little more of your fix. Its not the dynamic of the television cast playing out with a nice budget and some special effects, but it really does feel like the shows from that time often felt. It even does one of the things that the shows are notorious for, adding in a little "Earth humor" into the Crichton equation and letting him interpret many of the things he's seeing for you. Coupled with a nice outing by the always-troublesome "Sparky," a little Nebari moving, some Luxan added to the fray, and into sets the mood and the timeline really well.
To note, if you are new to Farscape then you need to watch the series up until the points mentioned and let it do the introduction for you. This is merely an installation in the saga and works well as an add-on to the DVD sets. While it could be understood without the background, picturing the faces and knowing their woes ahead of time lets this have more effect because the author does something I like, treating me like a viewer of Farscape and not a bumbling fool in need of constant reminders. Too many books do that when tied to a spin-off.
Like watching an episode.......2003-10-12
I found "House of Cards" to read pretty well. It's not literature, but you don't want it to be. Farscape's been cancelled and you need a fix. This is it. The author seems to be familiar with the characters and the series and this shows in the writing. I hope there are some other good Farscape novels out there.

I thought this book would give me some inspiration on how to paint my bedroom with the appeal of a five-star hotel room. It did not. It's just a book with a bunch of pictures of rooms that don't have much appeal at all. The price of the book, $29.99 should have given me a little something. I was not impressed.

A Truthful Tribute.......2007-03-20
Although I'm not a diehard fan of Marilyn Monroe, My Sister Marilyn has surely convinced me to watch more of her films. Since her death in the 1960's, numerous reports have surfaced on how she died. The book doesn't surround that particular subject; instead, it shows us the relationship between Marilyn and her sister Berniece. Their bond as sisters was nice to read and they continued to keep in contact up to her death. I highly recommend this memoir to any fan of Marilyn's, or just for the curious reader looking for truth on one of Hollywood's greatest beauties.
Wonderful Important Book on Marilyn.......2005-11-02
This memoir of Berniece Baker Miracle of her half-sister Marilyn Monroe (they had the same mother) is among the most important works ever written on this great star, if only for the insights and information about the young pre-stardom Norma Jeane Baker. Berniece avoided the press for almost 50 years and finally tells her story here and Marilyn fans around the world owe her a debt of thanks for her inside information on Marilyn's early years. And the early photos of Marilyn are so precious. This is a book I am certain will be turned to again and again by Monroe fans, historians, and scholars for many years.

This is a very enjoyable book. I'm so glad Berniece Miracle finally came out with the book with help from daughter Mona. The photos are wonderful, as you watch the transition from Norma Jeane to Marilyn, get to see her wedding photo to Jim Dougherty and hear words of Joe DiMaggio and learn some of the insides of Hollywood as Marilyn shared them with her sister.
Sadly, the book also describes how Berniece was hounded by the press and had a hard time leading a "normal" life. No privacy. I was hoping the book would give more insight into Marilyn's death, but Berniece and Mona are as much in the dark as anyone. Interesting is the denial of any relationship with President John F. Kennedy or brother Bobby. That seems to be a given in most books about Marilyn. However, if you read between the lines here, Marilyn doesn't deny a relationship, she just smiles when Berniece asks and says "they're just boys." There could be a lot Marilyn doesn't share with her sister!
But what comes shining through in this book is how loving and lovable Marilyn was, and how much she was loved by her sister. The idea of a mentally ill mother explains a lot of things, like Marilyn's obvious depression. The sisters not even knowing about each other until Marilyn was 12 and Berniece 19 is sad, but at least they had each other through the rest of Marilyn's life.
This is a lovely book, beautifully written, tragic as it must have been. It shows Marilyn as more of the earthy woman her family knew, which is a refreshing perspective from other Marilyn Monroe biographies!
Well written and insightful.......2002-11-09
I recommend this book to anyone vaguely interested in Marilyn Monroe, not merely the die-hard fan. I do not fall into that category, , but am aware of her enduring presence as an icon. This book lived up to its intriguing promise of providing ANOTHER viewpoint about Marilyn – other than the myriad biographies which have been about Marilyn by ‘outsiders’ and those enriching themselves on the proceeds.
This is very much the biography of Norma Jean Baker as she came to be known by her sister.
The picture of ‘private Marilyn’ depicted here does an enormous amount to restore Marilyn’s humanity, her connection with her family and peers, the person behind the impenetrable Goddess Icon that she has become in the decades since her death. This is the uncommodified, unexploited Marilyn, a person who loved and was loved. It’s a great corrective to the hagiographic or shallow tendencies of most Marilyn-abilia and I thoroughly recommend it.

As a fan of Marilyn Sachs ever since she published the rare "Amy Moves In", I couldn't help but buy it when I found it in a used bookstore.
The story starts out simple: 11-year-old Molly gets news that her sister Beth is visiting, and although there is a lengthy description of why Molly lives with her aunt and uncle (who she calls Mom and Dad), we find out that Molly and Beth were in a car accident and their parents were killed.
Then, things get complicated. Beth isn't the happy-go-lucky, nice 13-year-old that Molly expects. Although Molly predicts Beth has a figure, that's it for what Molly thinks. Beth is actually hostile, mean, and just about the rudest person Molly has ever met. And for the first time in her life, Molly wants to kill her sister, or at least give her a good fight.
One day, Beth comes and starts babbling to Molly exactly what happened in the car eight years before. Molly, who's fed up with Beth, tells Beth to shut up, but Beth is either delirious with the accident scene or she's just not going to listen. Nevertheless, Beth keeps talking, and finally Molly wrestles Beth to the floor, and the girls wrestle, slap, and bite each other in the fury. Unfortunately for Molly, Beth has to leave then, but Molly knows she wants to slap Beth again before she leaves. But Beth babbles on at dinner, nevertheless, and Molly never gets around to fighting Beth again... although she did find out What Her Sister Remembered.
