First read the book, then see the movie!.......2007-01-23

I saw the movie by chance ("The Young Visiters" a BBC Television special featuring Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy), and found out it was based on this highly original book written in 1890 by a wonderfully naive 9-year-old girl. What a treat! I would have preferred reading the book first, but the original did not disappoint. Really great fun, especially since the original (mis)spellings are preserved and add very much to the printed version. This book gives you a really great insight into the mind of a child of that day and age, which is hilarious and touching!

Would we enjoy this book as much if it was not written by a nine year old child? Was it written by a nine year old child? Does it appeal to Americans or to Britishers who are not familiar with the nuances of social pretensions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries?
Frank Swinnerton, and James Barrie are suspects for being the true authors but there good evidence (although I don't know if it's been recently reevaluated) for Daisy Ashford.
The compartments in the Crystal palace in which the nobility live seem to me to be authentic products of nine year old imagination. Small children often come up with gems like that. The ability to create a coherent plot and follow narrative theme for the length of a novel, even if only a sixty page one is unusual for even a talented child. Children are lazy and, even if they write at length, their stories become fragmented, lose their thread, and are often derivative. It takes adult skills and capacity for sustained hard work to write a coherent full-length work of fiction.. Ashford's failure to write after Barrie's death is suspicious..
Whatever the answers, the fact remains that I did enjoy it - treemendusly.

I was surprized at how very funny this book is and how true!Try it you'll like it!

A Laugh on every Line.......2004-05-05

How many self styled "comic" novels could hope to be as funny as this one...not many in my opinion. When a novel can be read through in a couple of hours and give you laughs on every page, you'd be mad not to buy it. Plus you'll probably want to read it again. There's plenty of information surrounding the background to this unique book, so I won't repeat any of it here. But basically, anyone with an interest in humour, absurd romantic situations, social history and a love of the English language simply has to have a copy of this. The charm of this book lies chiefly in the reading, it cannot be understood by just having it explained to you. Nor does it translate well to filmed adaptation; the recent BBC dramatisation with Jim Broadbent made a real ham-fisted job of it, adding their own extra plot and even making up new dialogue and mis-spellings...unforgivable!!
I agree with another reviewer who has mentioned that the J.M. Barrie forward is almost as entertaining as the book itself, drawing attention as it does to many of the best passages. Everybody I have introduced this book to has fallen in love with it, because it's nothing less than a pleasure to read. And its cheap too. In fact, my review could really be confined to two words - "Buy It!"

A classic just waiting to be rediscovered.......2003-07-22

This is the book that started the schoolchild genre subsequently defined by '1066 and All That' and Molesworth's various manuals such as 'Down with Skool' and 'Whizz for Atoms'. As with 'The Young Visiters', the grammar, the language and the authorial viewpoint of those classics contribute much to our enjoyment. But unlike its descendants, 'The Young Visiters' wasn't written by an adult ... probably.

To my knowledge, there isn't an audiobook version of the full text. But there are a couple of gushing extracts contained on the Naxos compilation '1000 Years of Laughter' which demonstrate that it isn't just the troubled spelling which make the book so amusing. The introduction to those extracts lead us to believe that JM Barrie, who wrote the introduction, could have had much to do with the entire work. Certainly once Barrie had died, she never wrote again, but my feeling is that the nine-year-old Ashford probably was the author. The story is less than 60 pages long, and can be enjoyed in a couple of sittings, then repeatedly re-read.

This work is likely to experience a dramatic surge in popularity this year. A TV adaptation starring Jim Broadbent (of 'Moulin Rouge' fame) will be broadcast, and this recently overlooked masterpiece will return to prominence once again.

2nd in a Trilogy - The Moorehouse Legacy.......2006-12-20

Joy Moorehouse grew up knowing that she probably would never have the things she wants - namely her neighbor,Gray Bennett, and a life of her own designing dresses. When Joy's parents died, her older sister took over the running of the family bread & breakfast, leaving Joy to take over the care of their grandmother, who has dementia. With the family barely holding on, Joy can only yearn for Gray Bennett, a rich, political consultant, who she has loved for years.

Gray, on the other hand, has noticed Joy, but believes she is too innocent, too young for him. Gray has had a pretty terrible family life, with his mother running around with every available man, and sometimes even putting Gray in the position of having to warn her when his father was coming home. Because of his mother, Gray really has very little use for women. Add his early childhood experiences to the cutthroat life Gray leads in Washington, D.C., and you have a recipe for a hard, uncaring cynic.

This second book in the Moorehouse legacy reminded me more of J. R. Ward's writing than the first book, but despite being well-written and interesting, I grew tired of Gray's internal whining and needless jealousy. At first it made the romantic conflict very believable, but after a while you wished he would just get over it or move on. Regardless, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary romances.

Moorehouse Legacy.......2006-11-12

Ms Bird has written another excellant series. Has strong characters that carry from one book to the next. Whether she is writing as Jessia Bird or JR Ward, she keeps her readers coming back for more,

Four Stars.......2007-08-06

I really didn't expect to like this book after reading Shards of Aldderaan where there was that big error about Luke's birthday but I had liked the other previous Young Jedi Knight books so I gave it a try and was happy I died. Raynar summoned home by his mother to find his father is missing. Aliens (non-humans) are after a plague that could kill humans but not aliens. I found the idea that aleins untying against humans to be very a very creative plot. Once again the charactoriations impress me. I love charactors that are fleshed out.

Not as good as Books 1-6.......2007-06-05

Plot line is weak and doesn't make much sense. The young Jedi knights don't seem to catch on to things quickly in this one. I am reading this series to my son who is 7, and he enjoys them. He isn't as annoyed by the out-of-character behavior of the main characters and bounty hunter as I am. Some of the more grusome graphic descriptions are not necessary and detract from the book.

A Very Good Book.......2003-11-12

Do you like Star Wars? Well if you do you should read the book the Diversty Aliance part of the Jouner Jedi Kinghts series. Its about after the movies. Its hard to compare to any series because most of the other books are about the movies. The book the Diversty Aliance is about a group of aliens called the Diversty Aliance that are looking for a plague that can kill all human life but aliens are immune to it. There leader has sent allmost every bounty hunter to find it. I think it was a good book for ages 9-13 I read this book in 1day. I liked it because I`m a Star Wars fan and you get to read about some old charters like Han Solo And some new ones like Louwe.

A very good book that does credit to the series.......2001-01-06

I have always thought the first series of Young Jedi Knights (Heirs of the Force, Shadow Academy, The Lost Ones, Lightsabers, Darkest Knight, and Jedi Under Siege) to be superior to this series (Shards of Alderaan, Diversity Alliance, Delusions of Granduer, Jedi Bounty, and The Emperor's Plague) simply because the foe was a little more interesting to me, and the characters seemed a bit better fleshed out. Now that I am older however, and reading these again for the first time in several years, I have more of an open mind and I realized that this second series is in fact very good, and, while it doesn't have as much action as the first series, the character development is superb. In this book Raynar's mother calls him to come home and be with her while his father is missing. He does and is accompanied by Jacen , Jaina, Tenel Ka, and Lowie who wish to keep him company and give him moral support while he gets settled but as you can propably guess, things do not go exacly as planned, and soon they are all off on an adventure to Kuar to try and discover where Raynar's father might have gone, with the absence of Raynar, who stays with his mother. Through epic battles with giant combat arachnids and assasin droids, they begin to discover that Raynar's father could be hiding for more reasons than his reputation, and that in fact there is a high probability that he is in fact hiding a secret that could destroy the galaxy... So anyway, this was a great book, though it would make more sense if you have already read all the previous books in the series, including the ones from the first series. One of the few things I don't really like that much about this series, is that everyone has to have someone else to "like". This gets incresingly annoying as the series goes on and the kids get older. And lets face it, Raaba's only purpose of existance is so Lowie will not be left out of all this. Zekk started out that way too, but luckily he now has his own place in the Star Wars world other than The Boy Jaina Likes, so I guess there is still hope. One of the good things is that it only goes as far as mild crushes and never all that boyfriend/girlfriend, breaking up and all that, so that is good thing, especially for someone like me who is not very big on romance at all, especially imature teen romance which seems to be so popular.

Worth your money.......1998-06-08

If you've read all of the other books in the series, you'll enjoy reading this one. If you haven't, you may want to read "Shards of Alderaan" first. However, this book is wonderful for leading up to the rest of the Diverstiy Alliance based books. It's a lot of background setting for the rest of the series. You won't regret buying it.

Best Cookbook I owned ever.......2006-02-15

I have to agree that this book is the best to one to have in your kitchen as far as a good basic cookbook you should have on hand for super good home cooked meals. I learned to improve my own cooking skills with this book and I enjoyed making recipes that actually turned out deliciously for daily meals and or for special occasions. You can not beat this and I think every cook should have this book on their shelves. Would make for an awesome gift idea...I too am happy to find this book as I need to replace my worn out version as I used mine so much for reference as it has tons of information on spices and meat temperatures and a glossery on cooking vocabulary. If someone knows of a better book, I'd appreciate any imput......because I certainly do not know of one off hand. I hope you buy yourself one or for a gift for that special person who loves to cook and or is just learning. You won't be sorry I promise.

Basic Cookbook.......2003-06-09

This is a great basic cookbook. I have had many, but this is the best. When you are looking up a receipe, many basic cookbooks tell you to open a box of some kind of mix, (to bake rolls or a cake etc) and tell you how to add onto that. I don't keep many mixes on hand, and this book gives you just a simple receipe to follow for almost anything. It also has information on storing, buying, cuts of meat, and roasting timetables for poultry and roasts. It's very complete from soups to entree's and desserts and it's also "new enough" that the roasting temperatures are safe. Mine is worn out and I'm going to buy another.

My favorite part of the book is the way the color palette is presented - instead of squares or blocks, the colors are presented in a band of stripes across the top of each page -very unique. Good for inspiration and ideas; nice pictures.

An excellent book, but needs an update.......2000-06-15

This book has fantastic pictures and a great view on Paul McCartney's life since his childhood in Liverpool, as a member of The Beatles, his marriage to Linda Eastman, his family life, and the birth and rise of his group Wings. However, it only shows information up to 1975, so it needs to be updated. But it's indeed a treasure for any McCartney fan, with dozens of rare and private photos.
