5 out of 5 stars Fine inexpensive edition. Other review is for audiotape!.......2006-12-31

This is a fine, inexpensive edition of one of Stein's two most readable productions (the other being 'The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas'). I'm giving it five stars because the item's star rating has been impaired by a reviewer who's reviewing an audiotape, NOT the signet paperback book on this page.

1 out of 5 stars Not good Gertrude, not good anything.......2005-06-18

Do yourself a favor and listen to Gertrude Stein reading Gertrude Stein, before or instead of listening to this recording. Enjoy Ms. Stein's crisp diction and the wonderful rhythms of her prose and prose/poems. Hear the way the sounds cascade through the phrases and the way the phrases become the meaning.

Then, if you must, listen to this Flo Gibson set. Possibly you won't listen to much of it. I disliked it intensely. The reader appears neither to understand nor to like the material and reads with unremitting dullness of diction and unrelentingly pedestrian rhythm. In an apparent attempt to give some workaday meaning to Stein's rippling, dancing phrases, many words are heavily overemphasized, like an extremely bad and condescending reading of a children's book. But do remember --you may not react as I did.

The reading is not helped by pops and hissings, especially noticeable and intrusive on the beginning consonants of most syllables.

    Book Description

"Don't Worry, It Will Work Out Perfectly."

But did he mean the wedding arrangements or their future life together? Eustacia didn't know. After all, it was a marriage of convenience, definitely not a love match. Colin made it very clear that he wanted a down-to-earth partner who would help him care for his brother's orphaned children, not a dreamy girl whose head was full of romance. But Eustacia couldn't help hoping that one day he might grow to love her as much as she loved him.

Back Cover description: "DON'T WORRY," COLIN SAID. "IT WILL WORK OUT PERFECTLY." Eustacia wasn't sure whether he meant the wedding arrangements or their future life together. She didn't know him well enough to even guess. It was a marriage of convenience, after all, not a love match. Colin had mad it clear that he wanted a down-to-earth partner to help him care for his brother's orphaned children--not a dreamy girl with her head full of romance. Even so, Eustacia found herself hoping against hope that one day, he might grow to love her as much as she loved him...

The reviewer from Ottawa, Canada has some valid points, but you don't read Betty Neels for reality. However, she makes you understand why the A-levels are useless in the first three pages. Nicely done story, strong characters, and happy ending. I always love the descriptions in Ms. Neels' books--food, clothing, places and homes. And I love the cars these guys drive; they cost more than my house.

3 out of 5 stars Modern romance consultant doctor hero.......2000-07-08

I brought this one by mistake, set in London and the country in the 1980s, not my preferred time period, the book is well written but definitely on the fantasy side.

Heroine with 4 `A' levels decides not to go to University, this puts her in roughly the top 1% of the population, decides to take a job washing bottles because it pays well. Hero, `Sir Colin Crichton' runs a Rolls Royce that never gets stuck in traffic, has at least two homes one in London, one in the country, both fully staffed, private income. Has reached the level of medical consultant / surgeon whilst in his 30s.

The author looks to be a popular one, and one of the nice things about books is you can make the world perfect, many of the characters are comfortable ones so you may enjoy this one.

This book has been reprinted in 2000 and may be available on the Amazon UK web site....

This Signet Regency is described on the cover as "a proper young lady and a lordly rake fight to keep from falling in love." An elderly and beloved stepmother tries matchmaking between her cynical stepson and her sheltered, but confident granddaughter. To do so, she sends him and her 30ish unmarried daughter on a fake errand of dissuading the granddaughter from an unsuitable match. The two protagonists suspect that they're being manipulated but cannot help their mutual attraction. The principal characters are intelligent and witty and the plot is for the most part believable. The secondary characters also possess charm. There's not a lot of sex (the copyright is 1980!), but what sweet romance and clever repartee there is in its place!

Vescinda Bancroft has been brought up to be and behave at all times as a lady. The Earl of Sherworth is an unconventional man of great passion, susceptible to bursts of anger. He disdains the dull pretense of prospective brides. When the two are thrown together in an attempt at matchmaking, they develop a rappour as friends and a passionate love for each other. Vescinda considers him like a "wild stallion" -- admirable for his strength and passion, but capable of using that strength to wound. He, in turn, has difficulty trusting women, and believing that Vescinda does not care for him, hurts her deeply. She decides that a marriage with no love is better than marriage to a man who will take her heart and break it. Sherworth cannot let her go -- will, in fact, do anything to keep her from going to someone else.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! Full of angst and humour in equal measure.......2000-03-27

A friend of mine recommended this book to me, and I managed to find it through an Amazon auction. It was well worth the trouble, and the postage costs of having it sent across to the UK.

There's a matchmaking mama; but she's the hero's mother. There's a debutante, but no ordinary simpering miss. And there's a hero, but no stiff aristocrat. Instead, when the hero first meets the heroine, he insists that he has no intention of standing on ceremony with her; they treat each other very informally and he encourages her to behave in a very unladylike manner on occasion. Which is fine... until the house party starts. Suddenly they have to behave very properly with each other, there is no further opportunity for private conversation, and its all downhill for their relationship from there. Here's where the angst sets in.

And it's very well written; we feel for both characters through the trauma of misunderstanding - and even more so when the private dinner which was supposed to resolve it all goes horribly wrong!

A great book; shame Joy Freemen hasn't written many since.

                    5 out of 5 stars Good effort..........2007-07-01

The author used to be a Physics Ph.d. candidate. Keeping this fact in mind is useful when reading the author's books. The literature survey is pretty good and reflects the author's not inconsiderable intelligence. But the incremental improvements which the author tries to offer in order to advance the state of the art (in the manner of a Ph.d. thesis) are just that: incremental. That does not in any way take away from the considerable effort which the author has obviously put in and the author deserves praise and recognition for this effort.

5 out of 5 stars Substantial Advance and More.......2006-08-06

I thought that this book was a substantial advance on the understanding of the ideas of Gurdjieff. Yet it goes beyond this by introducing new ideas that I believe would have been very acceptable to the original fourth way schools of thought.

5 out of 5 stars Essence is All There Really Is.......2004-07-17

Almaas has provided us with some of the most sophisticated means of overcome egoic attachment in his most well known book, Essence. Using his knowledge of Sufism, Buddhism, psychology to describe the universality of essence and what we can do to reclaim it has earned him some well deserved recognition. Connecting with our essence,i.e. the core of ourselves that cannot be distorted, perverted, damaged, etc. is no easy task and really takes a lifetime (or lifetimes) of effort. Almaas describes the false shell of personality that we all have in various degrees and the importance of working through /dissolving this shell (which fuels narcissism, insecurity, defensiveness, the desire to control others, consumerism, etc.). Reading Essence will be a perfect introduction to this author's extensive body of work. Embarking on reclaiming your own essence should not be taken lightly at all-so please read this wonderful book before taking the first step towards genuine enlightenment.

"four book Diamond Heart series, and the three Diamond Mind series also by this obviously enlightened author".. Unfortunately, being enlightened doesn't insure that one is a good writer, nor that he is able to teach enlightenment. This writing is the most tedious, repetitious that I've read. It (7 books) could easily be condensed down to a single chapter or an article. Some good insights, but nothing worth plowing through all the words. At times it seems words are just flowing, just to fill pages and he ultimately forgets what his point was going to be and never arrives. The author should respect the reader's time a bit more, the point is not to fill enough pages to make a book. But ultimately I don't see what the other reviewers saw in these books, more worthwhile to read the clear and concise Huang-Po or Foyan or Krishnamurti or Nisargadatta etc. for more to the point direction.
"Almaas has answers unique".. for the mystic, there is only One answer, it's the method that a teacher must provide.

                    5 out of 5 stars Remarkabe introduction!.......2002-10-09

If you are seriously interested in a supremely structured avenue to realizing the truths to our existence, this is the place to start. I've read the four book Diamond Heart series, and the three Diamond Mind series also by this obviously enlightened author. Any doubts I had after reading the "Snorsville" review were squelched soon after understanding the experiencial and profound approach offered by this teaching method. Almaas is and should be revered by his spiritual peers as a true groundbreaker in this realm. There is no blind faith here. You only need to comprehend what's written so articulatly, and if you like myself are seeking truth about who and what we are, Almaas has answers I've seen no where else in my many years of seeking through books and teachings. If you make it through all of the "Mind" series you're understanding of the "work" will be profoundly enhanced to the point where you will be convinced that his approach is unmatched in it's teaching and truth.

Update... Since I've written this review many months ago I have read all thirteen books on The Diamond Approach and my learned opinion still stands but ever stronger. I may not be a "former Monk", but through my sincere and intense study of this emense body of work over the past four years, and the integration of this profound teaching into my spiritual practice/life, what's been proven to me beyond any shadow of a doubt, along with countless other students of "The Diamond Approach", including Jack Kornfield, is that this should not be regarded as a waste of time. Although many themes are repeated throughout his teachings, I think we all need to be reminded over and over again of the deepest truths as we so often have the tendency to gravitate back to our condtioned patterns in our hectic lifestyles.

Do not take my word for it, or anyone elses (with the exception of Almaas). Do your own homework and you will find the truth in these books and most importantly, within yourself as I have.

We are heavily into collecting vintage and current Native American pottery and have referred to this book numerous times already since purchasing just last month. List of artists, their histories and work is outstanding.
Highly recommended for the beginning or seasoned collector.

This book is expensive. However, it has the best collection of potters names along with background information. We always take it when we go to buy pottery.

One of the most enjoyable books I have found to do garden crafts with my children. Each of the projects were fun and easy to do. I would recommend this book to young and Old. I hope the author is working on another book. Her illustrations were great.

Not only is this a great resource for kids, but also for beginning gardeners like myself. I was getting buried by the information in other gardening books...complex soil testing, amending, feeding, etc. This book takes similar information and makes it understandable and makes the results seem achievable. The info given on easy-to-grow vegetables, easy-to-grow flowers, and, especially, the chart for diagnosing and solving growing problems are VERY helpful. I found this at the public library and MUST have it at home!

I was incredibly blessed to have stumbled across this book in our public library. It has become one of those rare additions to our home collection. For beginner gardeners, or even the seasoned, there is an abundance of helpful information within the covers. The pictures are beautiful and captivating for children. The craft ideas are inexpensive, fun, and very practical. Highly recommendo!!

As a new first grade teacher, I found this book to be very helpful in planning my gardening unit that I did with my class. It includes all information that you would need as well as a lot of helpful hints for newcomers to the gardening world. This book also includes lots of ideas to try at home, from recycling to composting to eating what you grow-- super for science fair type projects!

GUEST ROOMS by Hilary Heminway and Alex Heminway doesn't just focus on the room itself; though this indeed is the major focus: it shows how to welcome a guest by making the room perfect for arrivals and departures, how to ready a bathroom and stock amenities for guests, and how to handle guests in the home, from picky or noisy children to demanding adults. Color photos of decorated rooms abound.

What makes a guest room great? How can you create one in a small space and on a limited budget? With lush inspirational photographs, tip boxes, and checklists, a group of designers from the celebrated Interiors by Decorating Den provide the answers to these and a host of other questions. These fabulous rooms feature a wide range of styles, including traditional, contemporary, French Country, British Colonial, and Zen--and they're all shown in large color pictures that make it easy to view every dazzling decorative detail. Some are gracious and spacious, others have twin beds, and still more take a "no frills" masculine approach. Almost everyone will appreciate the deas for rooms that do double duty and serve other functions when the visitors go away. Find out exactly what amenities the experts feel should be in every guest room, and see what advice they have to offer on specifics such as thread counts for the sheets, pillow firmness, ceiling fans, and lighting options. Thirteen beautifully decorated guest baths complete this lovely to look at and practical to use guide. A Selection of the Homestyle Book Club.

Completely setting aside my dislike for the author's decorating style (too poofy, too theme-y, at times too busy and crowded), there simply is not enough information here to be worth the cost of the book. It is basically a coffee table book. Large photographs of rooms dotted with text.

This is a wonderful book for anyone looking for beautiful, unique and sensible ways to make guests feel at home in any type of space you call a guest room. It includes clever techniques to create office/guest room combinations. There are cozy guest rooms created in small attic spaces. And of course there are dozens of simply gorgeous bedrooms that are entirely dedicated to guests, whether they be grandparents, grandchildren, or friends from your college days. This decorating book is beautifully written with professional photography that clearly illustrates the points the author is making--well worth its price!

Ironically and unfortunately, it is so flawed in its own design that I get angry when I try to read it and put it back on the shelf before finishing a chapter. I'm ready to throw it in the trash. That the author and organizer of this book was also the designer/typographer/illustrator undermines its credibility. The page design has no relationship to the format of the book. The text and titles are lost in the gutter because not enough space has been left for the binding. The images are badly reproduced and so filled in that they are dead spaces in each chapter. Many of the chapters begin with corrupted type...where was GS for the press checks? The author's attempt at illustration with marbled paper doesn't make any sense, is comical and the book was printed with the grain of the paper running horizontally so the pages cannot be opened and are cockling along the foredge. Grrrr.
Perhaps these essays can be re-published with a more knowledgeable and sensitive designer at the helm. The authors and readers deserve this.

Bought it, read it, wish I didn't spend it. Hoping it would have been one that would have been worthy of my typographic and design library, but it doesn't make the cut. I loaned it to few other designers as well, they reached the same conclusion. If the economy is bad don't buy it, if it's good..up to you.

4 out of 5 stars an excellent typographic reference.......2002-10-25

... this is an excellent reference for both typographic disigners and type designers. Gunnar is well educated in the ways of typography and has used his knowledge to assemble an invaluable collection of essays. in my fairly extensive typographic library, I count this volume among my most favored.

as for the design of the book, it comes down to matters of taste. certainly, none can question its readability. other than a few minor PostScript errors, I have never found this book anything but comfortable and efficient. to be honest, the cover is the only thing I took issue with, the rest of the book is quite well designed and relevant to the topic.

I highly recommend it for any typographers or designers library.

4 out of 5 stars an excellent resource for any typographic library.......2002-10-25

I wrote a lengthy and very flattering review for this book here the other day. I hope this very brief version makes it through so people won't be deterred by some of the other reviews.

I simply want to say that this book ranks among my most treasured resources in a fairly extensive typographic library. Gunnar is a well educated man in the ways of typography and has used that knowledge to assemble essays of value to both the typographic designer and type designer.

any issues one may take with the design are purely subjective. the layout and design treatment function quite nicely and give adequate focus to the question at hand. there has been no time in my reading of this volume that I ever found it to be anything but comfortable and effecient (accepting a few PostScript errors in its production which are only slightly distracting).

I recommend this book for experienced typographers looking for a little intellectual challenge as well as students only beginning to explore the issues of typography.

4 out of 5 stars an excellent addition to any typographic library.......2002-10-23

let me first say that the two February 2002 reviewers are out of their minds. the articles Swanson compiled/commissioned are superb! from controversial contemporaries such as Hrant Papazian to unquestionable typographic staples such as Beatrice Warde, Swanson has covered his bases. each and every article provides invaluable insight into topics for both the typographic designer and the type designer alike.

"The essays although well written didn't really say anything" (William Benard from Minneapolis, MN)
if anyone finds themselves with this sentiment, you may be lacking some basic knowledge needed to understand the issues. the authors have done a fine job of covering important problems, but these are short format articles and they would be hard pressed to frame the entire argument for all levels of readership.

"leave the exploration of graphic design and reading (books) to the qualified... the reader. Why should the heady designer try to redefine what reading is?" (A reader from In a state of...)
unfortunately, reading is largely subconscious. the many variables that affect reading comprehension and speed are not even recognized by the reader. psycologists have conducted coutless studies to try to assist in the design of books. however, the designers are ultimately the ones who need to discuss and be educated in these matters.

in terms of design, he has certainly illustrated the question of the uneasy relationship, but I found the structure to be quite readable. if anything, I was disappointed with the cover treatment, but it's just a matter of taste. if this were a long reading text book or novel I might question his technique; but given the short essay format, his occasional illustrations penetrating the margins are quite refreshing.

I rate _Graphic Design & Reading_ among the most essential design theory works in my library.

Global cultures clash daily, but none so personally as in Gayle Forman's You Can't Get There From Here: A Year On The Fringes Of A Shrinking World. Forman's trip around the world covers the cultures and differences in eight stories of personal encounters among world groups, from a group of transvestites on Tonga to an odd group of Lord of Rings fans acting out fantasy games in Kazakhstan in an effort to reclaim their European roots. The planet is shrinking as cultures overlap traditional and modern in strange, new ways: that's the underlying message of You Can't Get There From Here.

I love to be entertained by books that also teach you something along the way. Gayle did a great job of finding and exploring the obscure in every country she visited, grabbing you with her writing and taking you on her adventure.
Gayle takes you on a ride geographically and emotionally as she and her husband traverse the far corners of the world AND their relationship. I ended the book feeling like I knew the world a little better and was a little smarter about relationships as well!

Globalization is one of the most common words used these days and the very same word has been addressed by Gayle Forman in this brilliant piece of work. But Forman has provided the world with a perspective on globalization not many tend to consider and reach out to. That perspective is that although globalization is changing the material scenario of the world and is aiming largely at the world market economy and its impact on our now 'tiny' globe, it must move forward and end with accomplishing a compassionate connection between its inhabitants.

You Can't Get There From Here is a book with a writer who is sometimes blatantly honest yet is totally empathetic towards everything and everyone she encounters along her path. It's open (with the writer sharing her most personal thoughts and events)yet sweet and gentle in a modest manner. Very witty yet non-judgemental.

The most powerful message conveyed in the book is that every place and person on earth has a unique value and most of the time all that is required to realize that value and learn something meaningful from it is to look beyond oneself and beyond what the exterior seems to be.

Everything about Forman's book is human and universal because her words are truthful and from the heart. It is a complete narration that leaves the reader satiated because there is nothing missing it its content.

Gayle Forman and I occupy the far ends of the Bell Curve of travelers. She goes to Paris and never visits the Louvre; I often head to that glorious depository of art as soon as I've unpacked. But when it comes to travel books, I don't want to read about visits to the Louvre, I want an author who ventures to places I'm NEVER going to go (high on that list: Kazakhastan)and then tells me of adventures there with insight and wit. This is an absolutely marvelous book. I hated to see it end.

                                                Book Description

A pop interpretation of love, obsession, and betrayal. Norwegian cartoonist Jason's latest graphic novel (his fifth to be released by Fantagraphics) chronicles one of the oldest love triangles in the world: Mad scientist creates monster, mad scientist creates woman for monster, mad scientist...falls in love with the woman he created for the monster!

Working with some classic pop-culture icons, Jason tells a witty and unique story about love, obsession, and betrayal, alternating his trademark pantomime sequences (as the three lovebirds circle each other) with pages of dialogue (as the mad scientist's hunchbacked assistant, during his regular lunches with a fellow hunchbacked mad scientist's assistant, describes and comments on the ongoing events, while pining for a nice quiet retirement—or maybe just a better job).

Can't Get There From Here is presented in the same elegant format as Jason's previous popular graphic novel The Iron Wagon, a two-color process (black and grayish blue) on tinted paper with an uncoated cover stock printed in three simple colors, complete with flaps.
