Book Description
From National Book Award-nominated Kem Nunn comes an exquisitely written tale of loss and redemption along California's untamed borderland, confirming his reputation as a master of suspense and a novelist of the first rank.
When Fahey, once a great surfer, now a reclusive ex-con, meets Magdalena, she is running from a pack of wild dogs along the ragged wasteland where California and Mexico meet the Pacific Ocean -- a spot once known to the men who rode its giant waves as the Tijuana Straits. Magdalena has barely survived an attack on her life and Fahey, against his every instinct, takes her in.
An environmental activist, Magdalena is engaged in the struggle for the rights of the thousands of peasants streaming from Mexico's impoverished heartland to work in the maquilladoras -- the foreign-owned factories that line her country's border, polluting its air and fouling its rivers. She is passionate about her work, and perhaps has taken too many risks with her own safety.
As Magdalena attempts to reconstruct the events that delivered her, battered and confused, into Fahey's strange yet oddly seductive world, she examines every lead, never guessing the truth about the man who has marked her for death. Armando Santoya, beset by personal tragedy, an aberration born of the very conditions Magdalena has dedicated her life to fight against, is leading a trio of killers on a drug-fueled mission to end her life -- and that of Fahey, her new protector, confidant, and friend -- in a final duel on the beaches of the Tijuana Straits.

Another Good Yarn from Nunn.......2007-03-14
I enjoyed Dogs of Winter and sent out for another one. Tijuana Straits did not let me down. Recommended book for those road trips.
Tijuana Straits.......2007-01-04
Not as good as tapping the source but another great surfing novel from Kem Nunn.
It's books like this...........2006-05-15
It's books like this that make you wish you never learned to read. The lack of an exciting plot was matched by the pathetic character development.
He'sDoneItAgain.......2006-04-15
Yep, Kem Nunn has produced yet another winner. I've just finished this one, and I loved it again. He is a writer who can give his characters depth, and give his story-line meaning. A thoroughly good read once again. I'll be hunting the pages of Amazon.com for his next title.
surfing as metaphor.......2006-01-06
Surfers and their natural act are misunderstood. I know, I've been one most of my life. Kem Nunn understands this and effectively weaves the mystery and allure of riding waves into his fine novels.
At a time when most people have moved on to other things, surfers search for the next swell(sometimes at great personal sacrifice: e.g. character, Fahey). Redemption is found when someone (Magdalena, in this case) or something is encountered that is worth fighting for. Surfing becomes the perfect metaphor for life: years of struggling and searching infrequently rewarded by slipping moments of bliss.

Read something like it.......2007-03-10
If you've ever read Adam's Fall by Sandra Brown, you might see some similarities. I'm a huge fan of both authors so I can't say which is better, but I thought the storyline interesting.
Glad I gave it a chance.......2004-08-24
After reading the reviews here I went into this book with low expectation, but it was really terrific! Much more a character study than her more recent action-driven works, this story gives us lots of insight into the two main characters. I read that one reviewer felt they were wallowing in self-pity, but I think they were honest to struggle with their disabilities. It would have been totally unrealistic for them to flippantly brush off such life-altering conditions. The fact that it took finding each other to get them over their obstacles is what make this a romance. There is also a rocky road to happiness, which also made it seem more real. If you are only a fan of LH's more recent writing, this may disappoint. But if you are a true fan of romance, sensuality and character-driven plot, this one may delight you as much as it did me.
So so...........2003-07-23
I am so used to giving LH books 5 stars that this is a bit of a shocker for me. A wishy washy story on this one. You can tell it is one of her early ones. I keep reading her early ones while I wait for Cry No More to come out.
Sigh.
Any LH is better than no LH. Try it.... you might like it. I recommend Mr. Perfect, Open Season, After the Night and Shades of Twilight. Also all the Mackenzie books but specifically MacKenzie's Mountain.
An Early Linda Howard- for fans.......2003-06-13
For Linda Howard fans, this book is a good read. It is not as complex or as in depth as some of her later works, but you can see her writing potential.
This story is about Blake- a successful businessman who is paralyzed after an accident. Due to this injury, he has lost his zest for life, until a beautiful Physical therapist (dione) comes into his life to make him live again. She of course has her own past troubles to contend with and their journey to come together is what drives this story.
Come Lie with Me is a shorter novel and can be read in 1 day- the plot is alittle too similar to some other stories out there (most notably Adam's Fall by s. Brown) and the plot is a little predictable. But most Linda Howard fans will enjoy this story.
Way to predictable.......2003-02-08
One of the early stories by Linda Howard. This is the story of Dione who is a physical therapist with a past she wants to forget, and Blake who is giving up on life due to an accident where he looses the use of his legs, for a time. It isn't a bad story but it was a very fast read for me and a little to predictable.

Celebrity medium James Van Praagh has offered enormous comfort to the bereaved by helping them converse with their deceased loved ones. Rather than hoarding the secrets to his phenomenal success as a clairvoyant, Van Praagh now offers Heaven and Earth--a step-by-step course in developing psychic ability. He shows readers how to heighten each of their senses, not just the sixth one. In another chapter he describes the methods that spirits use to contact us, such as instilling thoughts that seem like "inspirations" (which mean "in spirit," according to Van Praagh). He also teaches readers how to protect themselves from negative entities, such as "psychic vampires." True to his bestselling formula in Talking to Heaven and Reaching to Heaven, Van Praagh uses real-life anecdotes to keep the narrative grounded and compelling. And there's an unexpected bonus: buried within the chapter "Psychic Protection," Van Praagh shares his clairvoyant insight into the assassination of John F. Kennedy. --Gail Hudson

alter our awareness to make contact with the
spirits of the departed
interpret our dreams as messages from beyond
use our inherent psychic gifts to help and heal others
Most of us go through life without developing the wonderful, natural, God-given abilities inherent in all of us. In Heaven and Earth, James Van Praagh gives us the tools to bring them to life.

Excellent reading.......2007-07-18
This book is so interesting that it was hard to put down. It really gives you a lot to think about and a positive outlook on so many things in life. It lets you know how to change and not complain about everyday events.
The search.......2007-01-10
This beautifully written piece is encouraging me to probe further, the things of spirituality.
Wordy!!!!.......2006-06-26
Hoping this book would grab me from page one. Was disappointed. Had to work to keep my interest. I am a big fan of MEDIUM, the TV series. After learning that it was taken from Van Praagh stories, thought I would try the book. Will still watch the show but not read the books.
Not my usual fare, but it has its moments.......2005-12-30
James Van Praagh is author of the New York Times bestseller, Talking to Heaven. A psychic who works primarily as a spirit medium, Van Praagh has established a considerable reputation for himself through lectures, tours, and interviews with such talk-show luminaries as Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.
* "Heaven and Earth" relies very heavily on the concept of spirit guides to introduce readers to their own psychic abilities. Rather than present exercises to help readers develop abilities on their own, Van Praagh focuses on putting readers in contact with disincarnate guides who are then supposed to do the actual work of guidance and instruction.
* Van Praagh comes at theories of psychic experience from the "white light" worldview that has become paradigmatic of the New Age. While the language of this white light paradigm speaks to a number of older practitioners, it may be a turn-off for younger practitioners, especially those coming from Generations X and Y.
* As a New Age author, Van Praagh writes from a very spiritual perspective and all of the anecdotes from his personal experience are accordingly uplifting and inspirational. However, Van Praagh frequently takes an overly credulous stance when relating psychic experiences, blurring the lines between faith and objective reality.
* Like many psychic development authors, Van Praagh teaches by example, relating many engaging and enlightening stories from his own life experiences. Although the stories Van Praagh uses to illustrate his points in Heaven and Earth are enjoyable to read, after a while one begins to wonder how much "Heaven and Earth" is about psychic development and how much of the book is about Van Praagh.
Van Praagh is clearly a lauded authority on the subject of psychic experience. "Heaven and Earth" is a very uplifting text that attempts to share the secret of Van Praagh's abilities with the reader. Perhaps the highlight of the book, at least for me, was the material on study groups, as groups can be tricky to put together and participate in, but are often essential to personal development.
Even with the criticms outlined above, I feel that there is a very sizable audience who will find this book both useful and inspirational. Readers under the age of thirty-five, neo-Pagans, and more traditional occultists may find the book a little too fluffy for their tastes, however.

Book Description
When Mayor Fargenberg announced a cake-baking competition for the town's big Fourth of July celebration, Donna Rae Hadley started thinking. And as all of Danville knew, once Donna Rae got one of her big ideas, anything could happen.
Not just any cake would do for Donna Rae's entry. Of course it needed to taste wonderful. But her cake also needed all the drama of the Boston Tea Party. It needed to showcase patriotism, like the Statue of Liberty. It needed the pizzazz and excitement of Paul Revere's ride.
Even Mayor Fargenberg, who was secretly sweet on Donna Rae, could see a culinary disaster in the making. Bring your fork and your appetite to this spirited holiday bake-off, but don't forget your napkin. The cake will be flying.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2007-07-16
The Great Cake Bake is Matt Collins first picture book; yet, his work surpasses many veteran artists. His illustrations are vivid and polished, shiny is probably a better word. The expressions are animated, and comical. The illustrations are funny, and beg a second look. I also love the animal antics. On nearly every spread Donna Rae's cat and bunny rabbit appear in the scenes. Her pets are either peeking from behind a post, or struggling to get a better view. It's cute, and adds to the fun.
This is my first experience with a Helen Ketteman's work, and I must say I'm impressed. Ketteman's writing is humorous without over embellishing. She's description, yet the terminology is age appropriate. The book is recommended for children 5 to 8, which I think is appropriate as it takes about 5-minutes to read aloud. The author sets the scene, grabs the reader's attention, and keeps us interested until the end. This book has accompanied my 6-year old to bed every night in the last few weeks. He adores it.
Great children's book.......2006-09-03
This book's illustrations are so well done and enjoyable, with lot's of background detail. They compliment the fun, lighthearted story perfectly. A book you will never be tired of reading!
cute.......2005-07-07
Donna Rae really wants to win the prize in the cake contest this year. She tries her hand a various cakes. She tests her cake out on the mayor. The first cake she bakes is a Boston Tea Party cake that end up spraying liquid all over the mayor. Then she bakes a Statue of Liberty cake that explodes when they light the torch. Her last cake is a replica of the old town of Boston. Find out the mayors plan to make sure Donna Rae is not in the contest next year!
What did you like or not like about the book?
The book is full of adventure. You never know what will happen next.
Would you recommend the book? Why or Why not?
Yes. It is a great book to read around the Fourth of July.

Vintage Fishing Reels of Sweden.......2007-01-12
Very thorough info on the early ABU line. I learned a lot of things, goes into depth, only wish there was more on the baitcasting line of reels. A lot of the info is in reference to other styles of reels which naturally is good for people collecting different styles. I only had wished that it had covered the 2500 line of reels more in depth. The info on the Record line, early Garcia line of 5000's, etc. is very good.

Printing-focused.......2000-10-23
The book has lots of nice work, but it's directed into printed media, and not "newmedia" (web, cds, etc). Virtually all the pieces of work displayed on the book are print artwork - cards, labels, banner ads, bags, boxes, and the alike. Pretty nice but not what someone intending to learn new media design should look for.
No only useful for design.......2000-06-17
I buy this book give me ideas to design graphic for web page(Quite funny, isn't it) As there are not much or even no computer book about this topic. Less colour a graphic use, smaller size the graphic file be and it is really important for homepage design.
