Set in the late 18th and early 19th centuries on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, Maryse Condé's Windward Heights is a retelling of the Emily Brontë classic Wuthering Heights. The title of the novel alone might tell you that something formulaic is afoot--and the book does for the most part mirror the wretched and doomed story of Heathcliff and Cathy. But Condé's plan is actually ingenious. She goes beyond Brontë, using shades of human color as a metaphor to illustrate subtle variations on evil, misery, and racism.
Heathcliff's counterpart in this story is Razyé, a cold, brutal, and relentless dark-skinned man of questionable origins. We meet him just before his return to the home of his youth--and to his Cathy, who has married a wealthy white creole: "He was dressed all in black in the French fashion, from his tightly-laced leather boots to his felt hat sewn with a large hem stitch. His skin too was black, that shiny black they call Ashanti, and his hair hung in curls like those of an Indian half-caste, the Bata-Zindien. Nobody could hold the gaze of his languishing eyes, where churned who knows what pain and solitude."
Razyé always destroys what he loves, and as we expect, Cathy soon dies. He avenges her death by punishing everyone near him--his wife, his many children, the entire island of Guadeloupe. Society itself is devoured by his aggression and hatred. This is Razyé's essence, and Condé uses him to make her point: the agony of not belonging, of hating oneself because of one's race, is toxic. Though the translation from the French could be more sophisticated, the skill with which Condé has adapted Brontë's masterpiece shines through. --Teri Kieffer
Book Description
Prizewinning writer Maryse Cond reimagines Emily Bront's passionate novel as a tale of obsessive love between the "African" Rayz and Cathy, the mulatto daughter of the man who takes Rayz in and raises him, but whose treatment goads him into rebellious flight. Retaining the emotional power of the original, Cond shows us Caribbean society in the wake of emancipation.
Customer Reviews:
Love story.......2002-02-17
Wuthering heights is like a black version of Wuthering Heights. The love story is between Cathy and Rayze. Rayze is a guy Cathy's father brought off the street to work for him. The two fall in love, but it can never work because Cathy is white, and Rayze is black. When Rayze leaves, and then return Cathy is married to another guy which runs Rayze crazy. This novel is told through the eyes of the people Cathy and Rayze comes in contact with, each chapter is written like a short story. I wasen't expecting Cathy's tradegy to take place so early in the book, I ithrought her and Rayze would have more time together once he returned. Rayze considered Cathy his soul, he was always trying to find a voodoo doctor to bring her back alive. I felt so bad for him, he love Cathy her so much. Rayze never get's over her death, and end up treating everybody in his life bad, his wife, kids. The book was good, and sad.
caribbean enchantment.......2001-04-13
I love Conde's books, and if you like the lazy, almost nostalgic style of so many of the South American and Caribbean writers you will no doubt find this book a great read.
The characters are at once powerful and vulnerable - the women are especially fascinating in that they breathe sexuality yet appear within the rigid confines of the society of the day.
The book is a 'remake' of Wuthering Heights, but don't let that put you off - it manages to deftly weave the original with Conde's own unique blend of interests and concerns - race, social injustice and hypocrisy. As modern as it is classic.
A Caribbean setting enriches the Wuthering Heights story.......1999-09-22
The passionate tragedy created by different social classes in WUTHERING HEIGHTS is hard to comprehend in contemporary USA. In WINDWARD HEIGHTS Conde renews the emotional reaction by changing classes to skin color in a 19th century Caribbean setting.
Conde following the Bronte storyline closely which means a plethora of characters with confusing relationships, the only weakness in the novel.
The sickness of spirit that results when a child is not loved or accepted by the society in which he or she lives is dangerous to all of society. In Conde's version the Heathcliff character wreaks havoc on the region, not just family members.
WUTHERING HEIGHTS was never the romance portrayed by Merle Oberson & Laurence Olivier, it is a story of obsession and revenge. Conde's version is beautifully written and seems more up-to-date.
Bronte fans will enjoy comparing the original to WINDWARD HEIGHTS & Alice Hoffman's version in HERE ON EARTH.
Compelling, delightful, highly readable!.......1999-09-21
With or without having read Wuthering Heights, I would have enjoyed this book. Vivid details, compelling situations and themes. She recreated the souls of Heathcliff and Cathy (and others), yet they belonged entirely to Guadaloupe. The ways Windward Heights was like and unlike WH were welcome. Conde never compromised her storytelling for the sake of the idea--a retold WH. As good as Crossing the Mangrove. The cultural portrait is a gift. Must reading for anyone who loves WH--or good novels.

Book Description
An Unexpected Passion
Lady Jenova of Gunlinghorn feels she should marry, though not for love, for she vows never to entrust her heart to a man again. Then Lord Henry, her charming and devilishly handsome friend, arrives to offer his opinion on the chosen bridegroom. But when they are trapped together by a winter storm, she and Henry wildly succumb to a desire they neither anticipated nor welcomed. And suddenly Jenova must rethink her matrimonial plans.
An Unforeseen Betrothal
It was a momentary madness—and Henry cannot let one indiscretion destroy a cherished friendship! Still, the fire lit by a passionate kiss will not be extinguished, and Henry aches to taste Jenova's sweetness again and again. The only proper course is to marry her himself, though it will surely cost him his honored position at the royal court. But more importantly, how can two who share no faith in romance trust their hearts to something as perilous and unpredictable as love?
Customer Reviews:
Another Exceptional Read By Ms. Bennett!!!.......2005-10-11
I truly enjoy the stories that Ms. Bennett pens. She creates wonderful characters and situations that draws the reader in.
Jenova and Henry share a past. They grew up together and Jenova was always kind to Henry even when her mother wanted her to keep her distance. Years have passed and Jenova married another and Henry earned his place at court. Despite these changes Jenova and Henry have remained good friends. So when Jenova sends word that she would like Henry to come to her holdings, Henry wastes no time and goes to his friend. He has no idea that this time things will be different. Very different.
Henry is handsome of face and form, trusted by the King and knights alike. When his good friend Jenova requests that he attend her he does. This widow has always had a small piece of his heart and he will do what he must for her. He is shocked when he finds out that she plans to marry again. Why he should feel this way concerns him but he puts it off. Then they take a ride and find themselves in need of shelter when a snow storm approaches. This is just the spark that needs to be set to the kindle that is their attraction. Now that he has tasted the sweetness of Jenova's kiss he wants more but she is promised to another. Will he forsake all in order to make her his bride or will he step back and allow another to call her wife?
Jenova and Henry are wonderfully constructed characters and this story is really very good. Ms. Bennett knows how to weave a story that will captivate the reader. It was entertaining to finally read Henry's story and Ms. Bennett did well by him.

engaging Conqueror romance.......2004-06-30
In 1075 England, Widow Lady Jenova asks her best friend, King William's confident Lord Henry to visit her at remote Gunlinghorn. William drops everything to travel the four days in wintry conditions to see Jenova to learn what she needs form him. There, she shocks him when she tells him that she is considering marriage after mourning the loss of her spouse for the last two years. Her chosen one is neighbor Alfric Baldessare, who would bow to her wishes and wants to know what he thinks especially since her potential groom's father demands that he be named estate guardian in the event of his son's death. Henry knows that the elder Baldessare hates him over a regal land decision so he has doubts about the match.
While riding, a sudden snowstorm sends Jenova and Henry seeking shelter. When they find refuge, they hold each other tight for some warmth, but soon make love to the shock of them both. Jenova realizes that she is in love again though has doubts after her first husband's betrayal and Henry hides his feelings. However, the elder Baldessare plays "matchmaker" when he abducts her five-year-old son to force her hand.
KISSING THE BRIDE is an engaging Conqueror romance starring delightful protagonists and wonderful secondary players to include a romance between the villain's daughter and Henry's top aid. The villain is so crazy that he seems like a caricature, but then again his actions force the lead couple to confess their inner feelings. Sara Bennett provides a fine historical that fans of the William era will treasure.

THE BOSS, THE BABY AND THE BRIDE
by Day Leclaire
Customer Reviews:
reprints but well worth it!!.......2002-10-07
Anne Stuart is one of my favourite writers, has been since I picked up To Love a Dark Lord and then Moonrise. She is the Queen of the Gamma Rogue, blackhearted heroes with even blacker souls. She can make these bad boys so compelling so that you would think Robert Palmer wrote SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE about them!!
Her tale - Kissing Frosty - is a much lighter hearted Stuart showing she is a deft hand with humour. Written in 1996 is it a holiday tale I am so glad they reprinted. Megan McGraw is tired of the nomad life and wants a man, a home and a baby. She runs a healthful restaurant in a small town called Waston's Hole, and next to her is Nadjia, running a new age shop. They are facing eviction from their shops because the owner of the building wants to put in a high priced shopping complex. So on the night of the Winter Solstice, Meggie challenges Nadjia to summon up her true love. They use the giant snowman as a poppet, pinned the picture of the current heartthrob actor, and conjure their spell. And much to Megan's surprise, 5 days later the actor turns at her bean sprout restaurant!! Only problem, he is accompanied by John James O'leary, a blackheaded screenwriter that sends her temper and her pulse in orbit. It is a fun tale that will have you howling out loud. I mean with lines like "he was using his mouth like an instrument of the devil, seducing her into a brainless mass of bean sprouts marching toward destruction. Oh, Lord, and she wanted to go!!" Stuart keeps this one rolling. I am only sorry it was so short.
The much longer THE BOSS, THE BABY AND THE BRIDE is a reprint of Day Leclaire's 1994 short story. Reed Harding is hard on secretaries, going through 12 in less than six month. But suddenly he has Angie (Angel?) Makepeace has become secretary number thirteen, and soon begins to take over his life - after all she is his guardian angel!! It is a funny story that charms you as well.

Book Description
John Paul Lederach's work in the field of conciliation and mediation is internationally recognized. As founding Director of the Conflict Transformation Program and Institute of Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, he has provided consultation and direct mediation in a range of situations from the Miskito/Sandinista conflict in Nicaragua to Somalia, Northern Ireland, the Basque Country, and the Philippines. His influential 1997 book Building Peace has become a classic in the discipline. This new book represents his thinking and learning over the past several years. He explores the evolution of his understanding of peacebuilding by reflecting on his own experiences in the field. Peacebuilding, in his view, is both a learned skill and an art. Finding this art, he says, requires a worldview shift. Conflict professionals must envision their work as a creative act - an exercise of what Lederach terms the "moral imagination."

Expert tips and techniques for building plastic, wood, plaster, paper, and metal structures. Includes roofing, painting, weathering, and detailing information.
Customer Reviews:
Some great tips, but not for everyone........2002-08-15
This book covers everything from card and plastic structures, to wood and plaster craftsman kits and metal castings. It does not cover it evenly however. Only 14 of the 222 tips deal with plastic kits and kitbashing, while there's a full 3 pages on applying roofing shingles to craftsman kits! Although there are many useful tips - and a couple of gems, I would only reccomend this book to a modeler just starting on craftsman kits. That's really the books focus. If you're not building craftsman kits, or you've built several already, this book won't be very relevant.
Great book about modeling structures........2000-11-30
I own several how-to books on model railroading and this one in particular does a great job of explaining how to build and incorporate structures on layouts. It also has great diagrams and pictures to help the reader with projects they may want to try. I highly recommend this book to model railroaders that may want some new ideas or tips on how to improve current skills.

Great Ideas for Bathroom Renovations!.......2007-06-06
I needed to re-do my small master bathroom in my new home that hadn't been updated since the 1960s. I live in a coastal village in New England and I love the classic, traditional home look.
This book was so valuable in helping me to make color and design decisions. I was able to take ideas from almost all of the bathrooms showcased in the book. Each of the photos and sparse but information-rich, bulleted text will demonstrate how to make a bathroom warm, cosy, bright, roomy and as efficient as possible given space and budgetary restrictions.
They showed tile and even wood floors as a viable option, marble tiling, wainscoting, gorgeous fixtures, a variety of sinks, vanities and wall colors.
Yes, the rooms were definitely styled for the shoot and the photos are gorgeous, but there is really very little that could be considered over the top (yes, except for the chandelier and built-in bookcase that appear on the bathroom of the cover of the book).
Just take the time and look through the rest of the book and you will have some beautiful ideas for your bathroom remodel!
PS: I started out with the former homeowner's choice of gray laminate flooring, pink walls, and matching bronze/brown toilet, shower and sink (believe me, I asked myself "WHY??" too).
I now have pale green walls, ivory bead-boarded wainscoting, dark cherry floors (triple-sealed for protection), and cream porcelain accessories (bronze be gone!)
I was wandering the aisles of Home Depot aimlessly having a hard time coming up with a cohesive design until I found this book. I am so happy with my results!
Pretty bathrooms!.......2006-08-05
I love this book and got some great ideas when I decided to remodel two bathrooms this summer. I love the tranquil blue colors against white. Take a look.
Unrealistic.......2005-11-15
Just a pretty book to look at. How many people actually have lofty ceilings with space for a crystal chandelier or even room for a built-in bookcase in their bathroom? Give me a break. These were nothing more than fantasy bathrooms in a coffee table book.

Interesting, but somewhat disappointing.......2005-08-29
The author has some very nice designs. I had hoped for more emphasis on logo design development (visual exploration of logo design), but for the most part all you see if the single final design for each project. I almost returned the book, but decided the designs are good enough to have on hand for ideas and inspiration. I find them more inspiring for magazine story title designs than logo designs per se.
Please note that if you are designing for a medium size business or corporation, you may not find much help here. The logos in this book are a bit too elaborate compared to the minimalistic logos that bigger companies tend to use. (In other words, if your plan is to design an Apple, Nickelodean, or MTV style logo, you might want to skip this book.)
Real World Logos, thats the point!!.......2004-03-24
The last reviewer seems to miss the point of the book. Too many of these other logo design book show all these corporate logos - pie in the sky stuff - that the average, small freelance designer will generally not have the opportunity to work on. I want to see REAL WORLD logos - for the pizzeria, for the plumber - for the small businesses that most freelance or smalller designer deal with all day. Is the book as relevant for corporate gigs? Probably not, hence the name of the book "Logo Design for Small Business".
It doesn't matter if the logos are geared for signage or other outdoor mediums. Why? Because any good logo that appears well in a larger format, such as signage or vehicle lettering, will look fine in print and electronic mediums. That's the whole thing that most designers DONT get - they design for print, and then the small business owner goes to utilize it in outdoor mediums (which is their most important usage) and the designs look lousy.
The author stresses the importance of distance legibility - which, if most designers understood, would make for better logos for their clients.
So, I'm going to say, the book is great for any designer who is working for small business type clients. It explains the rationale and reasons for these types of logos having different requirements than corporate ones.
Small businesses usually don't want those esoteric designs that a prevalent in these other logo books. They want something easy to understand, and impactful. This is also one of the few books I've seen that actually explains logo concepts and breaks them down into easy-to-understand language.
Good book, but not what I expected.......2001-07-12
I was looking for guidance in logo design. My purpose was for electronic media and print media specifically. When I got the book, the first lines of the introduction states, "This book is primarily written to address logo design as it applies to vehicle lettering and signage. Logo design for print usage has a different set of characteristics and design traits that set it apart from vehicle advertising."
The book is good for what it is intendend for. As I ordered online, I could not read that the first lines and no other reviews indicated that is was not just for small businesses in general. I rated it a three, partly because I had completely different expectations as I do not plan on doing any vehicle lettering anytime soon.
The author has a very easy style and explains through a series of hard knocks, as he has learned. If you are entering this field, you may encounter the same realizations. I like the fact that he reviews some of his early work and critiques himself and how and why it could be better based on his learning curve of practical design principles. Also, practical info on selling ideas, sales and pricing to customers. He has learned from experience.
A good book for those looking for signage as the focus is non-print/non-electronic mediums.
Practical Illustrations.......2000-11-22
This small book is filled with great examples of effective logo designs. It provides the novice as well as the experienced designer a library of useful logo designs and the reason that they are so effective. Antonelli draws upon his great love of the craft to share his approach to design and how to give simplicity that extra punch.
While many design books are heavy on theory with little practical application, this one can be used daily in the studio or shop as an aide to better layout and design.
Extremely well written and easy to understand!.......2000-11-17
This book is extremely well written. Dan takes you step by step through the design process in an easy to follow logical manner. He gives the reader important considerations that must be weighed when designing any new logo, and gives graphic examples that even an outsider to the field, like myself, can easily follow.
The book displays a vast array of styles of designs Dan has done, as well as several done by other artists. It shows some of the designs through the various stages and variations before a final design is completed, which helps the reader to see what can go right, and wrong, with a design.
He shows how you must evaluate the potential client and the clients needs before you can even begin. This helps to guide everything from color and typefaces to what the layout will place the most emphasis on.
The book takes you through several of his designs, step by step, and explains the benefits of one style over another.
Dan teaches you not only the dos and don'ts of designing the logo, but also describes how to handle the business end of getting paid for your work, and how to make the logo design just the first step in building a relationship with the clients.
Dan explains the benefits of providing additional services that are natural extensions of the logo design, such as designing and printing business cards, stationary, brochures and vehicle lettering.
Dan shows how you must sometimes guide the clients away from choices that may not work well for their company, and instead create designs that will portray the image the company is looking for in the various mediums it will be used in, while keeping within the clients budget.
The logo becomes not merely incidental, but instead it becomes a cornerstone of a carefully crafted and directed corporate image.
Definitely the best book on the subject I've ever read!

A nice change.......2007-07-23
When I opened the box from Amazon my first impression was that this book isn't very big. Most of the books I buy on design, software and photography are between 100 and 500 pages. Dan's book has just 71 pages.
I had mixed feelings about this at first. On one hand I was wondering if I had gotten my money's worth and on the other hand I was relieved that I didn't have to find a way to fit another large book into my schedule.
After a couple of days carrying this book around with me I had actually finished reading the whole thing. The short answer to my query above is yes, I got my money's worth.
My impression of this book is that it's a 71 page summary of a four year college design program and it is written more from an applied perspective than an academic perspective. This book doesn't teach you how to use your software, the principles of color science or technical terminology. This book points out things that you need to consider when dealing with real life situations, gives you some solutions to these issues and many sample designs (including the names of many of the fonts). Some examples include:
What to do when a customer wants you to create a fresh identity for them using their old art work (that may have been done by their niece in MS Word)
What to consider when designing a logo that will be used in different types of collateral. Business cards, web sites, windows and vehicles have different requirements.
Differences in designing for a large corporation vs. a small business.
Being a successful designer means that your work produces results for your customers. What do you do when a customer says "I just need an inexpensive logo and some cheap cards."? You know that giving them what they asked for will make them and you look bad.
I like this book. It deals with real life and gives real life examples. It is readable in a reasonable amount of time.
I recommend this book to designers and to customers of design services. If you need design services this book will help you understand what your designer is saying and if they are doing a good job for you.
Disappointed!.......2006-01-21
If you are looking for a book that contains a bunch of logos along with a description of the meaning of each logo, then, this is what you are looking for.
However, I still advise you to save your money. This one is very expensive compared to the content and what is there in the market.
I wish if I didn't buy it!
Small Business Logos are Rarely Explained- this book is a resource........2005-09-23
After completing graphic design courses in a New York City school, the topic of small business logos and how they're different from corporate logos was never once dicussed or explored. How often is it realistic to think that as designers, freelance or otherwise, that we'll be asked to create an identity for a large corporate client? The fact is that there are many times more small business than large corporate clients for whom we'll do work-- and we're never really shown direction on how to approach their needs.
This book, as well as the first one, really show and remind us of what we see around town on a daily basis, and how to design for those small businesses in a great an impactful way. Your small business typically can't have a logo like one you'd see for a large corporation- it needs to bring more identity to the name and make more of a statement.
I think this book should a part of any designers library if they're working on logos for businesses like the ones Dan Antonelli seems to design for on a daily basis.
More of the same.......2005-08-29
If you own the prequel to this book, you know exactly what to expect. It contains more of the same kinds of designs, in very similar styles, with additional commentary.
My thoughts about this volume are pretty much the same as my thoughts about volume 1. It's OK, not great, but a fine resource to have on hand.
I'm in the process of producing candidates for a possible redesign of our corporate logo. The logos in this book are a bit too colorful and casual for an organization of our size and nature. But I did find the designs to be artisticly pleasing. For me it is more of a general design resource than something that would help me with my particular goals.
Having said that, the title of the book after all is "Logo Design FOR SMALL BUSINESS." Pay attention to that last part, and you may be pleased with what you get.
A great resource for all logo designers.......2005-05-31
"It may be a bit odd for me to reviewing a book that includes quite a few examples of my own work. However, with my own logo designs in over 70 books at this point. my selection of logo design volumes to consider for review might end up being somewhat limited. With the follow-up to his first book, "Logo Design for Small Business," Dan Antonelli does not disappoint the logo designer with his second offering, "Logo Design for Small Business 2." Antonelli preaches what he practices. I appreciate the fact he is educated as a designer, has worked in the industry for a number of years and is in business as a sign maker. He understands, and is able to convey, what a designer needs to accomplish - and, from his own unique perspective, what a vendor needs as a final product. The author provides a great deal of advice in regards to the business of logo design for small businesses, as well as displaying examples from a variety of designers for inspiration. Don't be put off by the rather short length of this book - it's 72 pages of useful information. Those just starting out in logo design will benefit from the excellent advice of Antonelli. For seasoned pros the book is a reminder of many things we should consider in our day to day designing of identities. All logo designers will recoup the cost of the book on the first project produced after reading the book - and it should be on the reference bookshelf of anyone interested in the design of logos." - from Jeff Fisher's "Logo Notions" column on CreativeLatitude.com

Customer Reviews:
An Okay book for Photoshop novices.......2007-07-13
This book has a lot of good information in it, but is not well written. You may be halfway through a paragraph before you get to the topic sentence and figure out what the author is talking about. It often takes a second or third trip through a paragraph to figure out what it's about. The author also is not consistent with his word usage. I've found as many as three or four different words used for the same thing. For instance luminosity and brightness are used interchangeably, sometimes on the same page or even the same paragraph. So, using the book can be frustrating, though the author clearly knows Photoshop and I have learned a lot from the book.
The book does not mention or discuss some of the neatest features of Photoshop CS2 including some of the Automate features such as Merge to HDR (high dynamic range). This feature combines an underexposed and an overexposed picture into one high dynamic range image (bright areas are not washed out and dark areas are not black). This is an amazing capability that is not mentioned.
I would buy this book again, but only after searching diligently for one that covers the same scope or more and is better written. Actually, I'd probably get a book that covers CS3 as well, and hopefully indicates where features are unique to CS3. Or maybe just a CS3 book if you are going to upgrade. I understand the upgrade to CS3 is well worth the price even though it is now $200. Ease of use alone makes CS3 valuable to novices from what I've read.
Good Addition for Photoshop Middle Skill Users.......2007-05-21
Mr. Smith's book is well illustrated and supported by the accompanying CD (images to work with that are in the book). His explanations are clear to the Photoshop user and he does explain some terms, as in methods of cropping and re-sizing an image and which method is suited for which type of image), file formats of images, and other areas like the applications under adjustments that I had not used until I began working with the book.
I have found some techniques that are similar to other authors (Scott Kelby, in particular, whose books I have enjoyed quite a lot), and that was part of my interest in purchasing the book-to broaden my reference library with people aside from Kelby, Deke McClelland, and some folks on-line like Earth-Bound Light and Photography, etc). I recommend purchase. Readable, well cross-referenced, and helps deliver results.
Excellent.......2007-05-08
Excellent training material. I would also recomment The Photoshop CS2 Book For Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby. The combination is outstanding.
Good Book.......2007-01-20
I am an amaetuer photographer. This book has helped me fine tune my photos and bring out its full potential. I will gladly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain more knowledge on photography and perhaps learn a very powerful photo editing tool.
[...].......2007-01-10
This book covers a lot of complex material and some details.
The explanations are generally very clear, but to get the most from it you need to work through the exercises (on CD) and probably re-read the sections that might still be a little difficult to follow.
If somebody looking for step-by-step and good tip and tricks this book probably isn't for you but you'll find a lots great tips.
If you're willing to put in some effort you'll be able to make amazing improvements to your photos. Strongly recommended.
