Book Description
How much is too much to ask of friendship? How long will the bonds of family endure when confronted with swift, unexpected change? These are the intimate questions Jean Reynolds Page poses in A Blessed Event, her assured and powerful literary debut.
Joanne Timbro and Darla Stevens have grown up in a small Texas town, their childhood homes separated only by adjoining back yards. Although the families inside these houses have little in common, the two girls find in each other a rare friendship that will take them into their adult lives; a friendship that makes them stronger together than either could be alone.
Then as young women, Darla and Jo enter into an agreement that will startle everyone who cares for them. After years of watching Darla’s heartbreaking failure to have a baby with her husband, Cal, Joanne agrees to give birth to the child that Darla cannot have on her own.
But in the early morning hours of a warm July morning, everything changes. Joanne, then four months pregnant, is driving a car that veers off the road near the home that Darla shares with Cal. In the days and months that follow, Darla must face for the first time in her memory, the possibility of life without Jo. As Darla tries to uncover the secrets that brought her friend out onto the highway in those dark morning hours, she discovers that she must also fight to keep the baby that was intended to be her child.
With the child’s fate hanging in the balance, Darla searches for clues to Jo’s strange behavior leading up to the crash. In the process, she discovers truths that hide in her own life: in her marriage, in her closest friendships, and in a past that has suddenly reemerged, full of unfolding secrets.
Tender and heartbreaking, hopeful and honest, A Blessed Event brings life’s everyday experiences into bright focus, contrasting beautifully the pain of suffering with the sublime joys of surviving—and truly living.

Compelling story sure to spark debate.......2006-11-27
Darla and Cal Stevens have given up on conceiving a child. When her best friend Joanne agrees to be a surrogate, Darla gives the okay to do it the old fashioned way. Five months later, a teary eyed Joanne flees the Stevens household, only to come crashing through the bedroom a few hours later, leaving her brain dead, but able to carry the child.
Joanne's accident unearths many lies and long-buried secrets, and results in a grueling custody battle between Darla and Cal and Joanne's estranged parents. With Cal acting distant and unsure if they should pursue keeping the child, Darla is forced to turn to an old mutual friend of her and Joanne who is now a priest for answers. But is she ready to uncover the truth?
Page tells a compelling story with a moral center that will keep readers debating until the end, despite a pretty selfish protagonist who'll do anything to be a mother.
Couldn't Put it Down.......2006-08-31
Bravo! This story grabs your attention in the first paragraph and there is no putting it down once you get started. The author has intermingled just enough drama, romance, tragedy and curiosity to keep your pages turning while your eyes burn and beg for sleep!
story of redemption, loss, forgiveness and relationships.......2006-02-16
Story of Darla and Jo, best friend since childhood. Story opens with Jo crashing in the middle of the night into Darla's house. While Jo is kep alive by machines in the hospital because she is pregnant, we go through Jo and Darla's friendships and learn what brought them to this tragic event. Darla got Jo to get pregnant by Darla's husband, as Darla can't have children. This has led to trouble in Darla's marriage, and we follow her as she comes to terms with losing her best friend, making discoveries about who Jo really was, the relationship between the two of them and their families. While some of the writing is sometimes a bit cliche, Page does a good job with this story of redemption, forgiveness, loss and relationships. Recommended.
Moving and poignant.......2005-07-13
"A Blessed Event" is that special kind of book where the writing is as enjoyable and involving as the story itself. The novel is, at its heart, the story of the friendship of two women and what happens when circumstances bring them closer together and tragedy threatens to tear them apart. As a man, I felt that I could understand, better than with any book I've read, what a friendship - a close friendship - between two women is like. The ending was perfect, but in a way, I wish the book hadn't ended. This would be a great book for book clubs, because it's the kind of book you want to share. It's hard to discuss such a wonderful book, though, with friends who haven't yet read it. So I've been buying copies for friends and relatives.
4 AND A HALF STARS.......2004-09-04
Oh, this book. I can't stop thinking about it....specifically the friendship between Darla and Joanne. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was somewhere around the middle I felt it was dragging and I *almost* didn't finish it. I am so glad I stayed with it. For me the ending was....well,,,,almost anticlimatic......, unresolved in some ways and resolved in others (i.e. life) but I grieved for Darla all the way through and her loss of her best friend. I loved the flashbacks although was the author suggesting a tad more to the intensity of their friendship than ever really came out in the book?(???) I thought the writing was beautiful with real dialogue and definitely not just a sappy Lifetime channel movie as one reviewer thought. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a poignant and wonderful read about friendship. I look forward to more by this author.

A mans perspective.......2007-02-20
I bought this book to learn more about women and how they look at sex in a relationship. This book does just that. It is very informative and written in a style that is like talking to a close friend. I read the first 200 pages at the first sitting and only stopped because I had to go to work.
I highly recommend this book to all guys that are trying to figure out what is going on in their womans head. I thought I knew a lot about women but have learned from this book I had a lot of misconceptions and misinformation. A very good and easy read.
Please Dear, Not Tonight: The Truth About Women And Sex: What They Want, What They're Not Getting , And Why.......2006-11-14
This book was a gift to me by my husband. My only regret is that I did not have it at age 20 instead of age 60. Kudos to Mary Jo Fay for speaking about activities of sex openly and honestly just as one would to prepare a gourmet meal or any other of the fine things we enjoy in life.
Mary Jo Fay did a great job of disspelling the myth that "sex is for the man and not for the woman". The book was written in plain , down to earth language that anyone could understand and I recommend that it would be a great asset in helping young women to learn to experience sex to its' fullest in their younger years vs. so many who don't "awaken" untill their 40's.
An added bonus is that Ms. Fay made a quick reference system very easy for men who want to know what women like without having to spend a lot of time reading the entire book. Mary Jo Fay provided many good suggestions for both men and women to enhance their sexual experiences and relationships. I believe this is an excellent guide new and continuing experiences.
"Please Dear," where have you been all my life.......2006-09-29
"Please Dear, Not Tonight" rivals "Our Bodies, Ourselves" for providing thorough, no-nonsense, but far-from-aseptic sexual information. I see it competing with "The Feminine Mystique" for the number of women it will nudge to "take on" their perceptions of the way their sex lives and relationships have always been, continue to be, and the way they want them to be. A valuable and timely book.
Fun, informal and informative.......2006-09-01
Mary Jo Fay's "Please Dear, Not Tonight" is an entertaining and factual read on a subject near and dear to all of our hearts, SEX. But beyond bump and grind, it's a valuable guide for the day to day workings of a physical and emotional relationship. Very much a worthwhile addition to your home library.
One of "Please Dear's" best features is an easy and approachable style...along with the feeling that it's a little more on the edge than things are USUALLY around your hacienda. I had the same feeling, as I read "Please Dear", that I'd had thirty-five years ago reading "The Sensuous Woman/Man". The excitement of learning something new was there, and that's a powerful plus in a sex title. Mary Jo is a familial, informed and fun-loving guide for the ins and outs (pun definitely intended) of sex.
I highly recommend reading it...and sharing it with that special someone.
61 and still learning! .......2006-06-15
Having grown up in the straight and narrow, family wise, religion, culture, etc., I have to admit I'm an uptight prude wanting to 'fly'. Well, Mary Jo's book has set me on my way! It was like getting permission to loosen up. This book is well written, very educational, and fun to read.

Book Description
The Stainless Steel rat is back! Slippery Jim diGriz, the future's most lovable, laughable, larcenous conman tumed counterspy, retums for yet another high-tension mission.
This time the Special Corps has given the Rat a daring assignment - liberate a backward tourist planet from the clutches of an aging dictator. With his lovely but lethal wife, Angelina, and his two stalwart sons, James and Bolivar, diGriz pits ballots against bullets in the fight for freedom. He's vowed to restore truth, justice, and democracy to the world of Parisio-Aqui, if he has to lie, cheat, and steal to do it.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
Another amusing installment of the Stainless Steel Rat series. When Slippery Jim di Griz is on holiday with his easy on the eyes spousal unit, he deals with the local politician, who keeps himself in power though skullduggery.
The Rat is a master of this, and decides to go into politics and beat him at his own game, and much entertainment is had by all.
Slippery Jim DiGriz is more himself than ever.......2007-02-19
The Stainless Steel Rat is back and he's... well, he's exactly the same as he was in his previous books, except now he's got a wife and two grown sons who are exactly the same as well. And that's as it should be. Reading a SSR book isn't about character development, or moral complications, or really anything at all other than watching an incredibly cool, practically unstoppable James Bond style superman work his way through platoons of bad-guy minions. The fact that we get a liberal sprinkling of science fiction goodies like space-ships and sleep bombs only adds to the fun.
I particularly liked this book for the way it changed the typical conflict: Instead of requiring a solitary mission to snatch some valuable item or stop some particular bad guy Slipper Jim must steal an entire election in order to save a planet under the dictatorial rule of a "president for life". This expanded the tricks necessary to win the day and introduced many amusing concepts, from voting the graveyard to protecting your political rallies from ballistic missile attack. Now if Harry Harrison could just have realized a little earlier that Esperanto was never going to be a Galactic lingua fraca, the entire book would have been one perfect romp.
One of the funniest books in a very amusing series.......2006-07-31
Harry Harrison does comedy better than almost any other Science Fiction writer, and the Stainless Steel Rat - Slippery Jim Di Griz - is probably his funniest creation. This is my personal favourite of the Stainless Steel Rat books.
After one adventure too many, Slippery Jim, his beautiful but slightly murderous wife Angelina, and their two sons decide to have a rest on a backward planet. However, they get mixed up in the planet's politics, challenging the military dictator who has maintained himself in power for hundreds of years by rigging electors.
If you enjoy this, another comedy SF series which might amuse you, by Harrison's only serious competitor for the title of funniest Science Fiction writer, is the Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. The first book about Miles is "The Warrior's Apprentice."
Looking back on the events of "The Stainless Steel Rat for President" I wonder if Ferdinand Marcos read it. If so, unluckily for him, so did his opponents ....
Strongly recommended
Stainless Steel Rat Still Untarnished.......2005-12-01
One has to keep in mind that once a pop culture symbol such as James Bond secures a certain niche in society that a bit of parody is to be expected. Such is the case with the television series "Get Smart" which mocked Bond to perfection and such it is with The Stainless Steel Rat. Spending a belated honeymoon with the reformed femme fatale, Angelina, who is now his beloved wife they find themselves embroiled in intrigue and andventure when fate places them on a planet run by an evil, tyranical dictator who rigs the elections for certain victory. Though Jim DiGriz is seen as having matured a bit since his last outings his stainless steel exterior hasn't tarnished in the least. Amidst the mayhem humor abounds for an enjoyable laugh at what the life of a government agent might be like in a galaxy soon to come but not, necessarily, so far away.
Light-hearted sci-fi adventure book, can't really go wrong........2004-03-24
Hello, everyone! Owning a few of the other books in the Stainless Steel Rat series, I got this book second-hand from an Amazon vendor to complete my SSR collection that I've been slowly building up since my mid-teens. I got a very good copy for a few bucks, so it was a good deal. The book caused me to chuckle at a few places, but nothing over-the-top-funny. If you want a quick read that isn't too heavy, really recommended. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere for your sci-fi comedy, such as Douglas Adams' awesome stuff. Just my two cents! =)

Definitely gets my vote........2005-08-14
The Stainless Steel Rat stories are generally entertaining , sometimes amusing, written with a sense of the ridiculous and a touch of political comment.
"The Stainless Steel Rat For President" is my favourite of them all. Jim Di Griz (alias the Stainless Steel Rat) takes his beautiful but deadly wife Angelina to the delightful holiday world of Paraiso-Aqui, which bears a strong resemblance to the Latin American countries of our Earth - Hispanic and full of gorgeous women, brave men and excellent rum.
Unfortunately Paraiso-Aqui suffers from the worst of Latin American politics. The whole planet is ruled by the sadistic and evil tyrant General-President Julio Zapolote. He has stayed in power by winning 41 consecutive rigged elections (and by regular use of longevity drugs!) Jim decides that Zapolote is going to be unlucky the 42nd time...
From this point on the plot involves a car full of hidden technology, unpredictable political rallies, desperate chases , short skirts , spacecraft rustling and sabotaging of election broadcasts.
I've taken part in about 25 elections and never seen spacecraft rustling once, but this book actually conveys the EXCITEMENT of a close election better than any other book I've read. Every decent politician would love to take part in a contest like this one.
On a more serious note, this book serves as a warning to those who would like to get rid of old-fashioned paper ballots and rely on computers!
The Stainless Steel Rat for President follows the other book.......2000-04-26
The Stainless Steel Rats for President follows the great tradition of all of the other books written by Harry Harrison. Jim DeGriz uses clever devices and anticts to attempt to over throw a president that has been president for over 50 years. Jim DeGriz gets his whole family involved in the race for president. The book ties in with the rest of the Stainless Steel Rat books and upholds its right for being in this hallarious series. Anyone who likes funny books will love all the Stainless Steel rat books as Jim DeGriz goes around playing everyone.

Great addition to any Catholic library.......2006-03-18
I throughly enjoyed reading this collection of stories. At first, when I saw this book in the book store, I only wanted to buy it because of one of the Asian authors. But, when I read this book last night I couldnt put it down and I evenually read the whole thing. I loved the diversity of the selections that Doyle picked out from America to Australia and from August Turak to George Wiegel. I recommend this book to anyone interested in faith. If you have a strong connection with the Catholic faith, this book is a can't miss.

Simple and great........2007-01-10
I like Ms. Emily's style. Her desserts are simple yet delicious and gorgeous. I also got her Ice cream book (as a present from a pastry chef that had the pleasure to work with Ms Emily). am converted. She is one of my favorites.
Thanks to you Molly!!!
the title fits the book for the most part.......2004-06-12
Having read the first book "Stars Desserts", I found this collection of recipes to be a bit disappointing in comparison although it is still very good.
The author writes in her introduction that she likes to create desserts with no more than 3 flavors and she offers many good recipes that fit this profile. Examples include chocolate desserts like eclairs with pear-flavored filling and chocolate glaze, mocha hazelnut torte, and chocolate souffle with coffee caramel sauce. Just as in her first book, she continues to shine with her egg-based desserts like the souffles and icecreams. The chestnut crepes with orange honey icecream and the baked apricots with vanilla icecream and almond praline were comforting and earthy while other choices include the pumpkin souffle with apple caramel sauce or the Grand Marnier souffle with chocolate caramel sauce. Caramel as a flavor is obviously a favorite of Ms Luchetti as it is prominantly featured in this book as well as the original "Stars". She continues with traditional desserts with a twist like baked apples with caramel rum-raisen sauce and figs simmered with honey and Marsala wine, served with a ginger cream sauce. Other favorites of mine were the cherries jubilee with brandy and almond icecream, blueberry lemon cheesecake with cornmeal crust, and the banana cardomon cake.
This book was excellent on many counts however, was marred by some not-so-great recipes. For all of the recipes I wrote about above, there were an equal amount of recipes that didn't appeal to me at all. The problems seem to be centered around the presentation in assembly. The desserts just didn't seem to be designed well. Examples are the plum biscuits, pear-pecan napolean, mini croquembouche tower, chocolate-filled filo, rasberry champayne cake, berry buns, banana sherbet with chocolate cream sauce, baba rum cake filled with chocolate pastry cream, bing cherry dumplings, and oat crisps with blueberries. The latter dessert would of been so much better if it had been an oat crust with a blueberry filling and presented as a tart. The berry bun appeared to be based on the chinese steamed bun, but the berries in the center reminded me of something unpleasant. When I saw the photo, all I could think of was a scab...an injury of some sort. It didn't look appetizing at all.
Even with these misfits, the book is still really good anyway. The main thing is that I think Luchetti tried too hard sometimes and was overly creative. A lot of recipes in this book center on fruits and to me, it may be a matter of preference on my part. I like homestyle presentations for fruit like cobblers, crisps, and pies. An excellent book that features great fruit desserts of this calibur is "Baking with Jim Dodge" by the same author. Luchetti takes more of a 'composed' stance in her creation of fruit desserts. No matter...a very good book none-the-less.
stunning sweets for any kitchen.......2003-04-30
These receipes are flawless and nearly fool-proof! Over a dozen of these sweets have become family favorites. Emily Luchetti's desserts are simply stunning in flavor and simple to prepare. She gives comprehensive instructions that are easy to follow, always resulting in a wonderful treat. Her receipes must be well tested for the home kitchen, because I have never had a problem producing the desired result. For a cook who is more at ease making savory dishes, Emily makes sweets enticing and approachable. When you consistently get great results, you are ever-encouraged to try another and another and another dessert until you can master many! By far, her two books on desserts are the best I have discovered for sweets. Look no further!
A really, really wonderful desserts cookbook.......2002-05-26
Emily Luchetti's earlier cookbook, "Stars Desserts," was filled with desserts she had developed as pastry chef at the famed Stars Restaurant in San Francisco. "Four-Star Desserts" expands upon that repertoire and continues to support her reputation for deft yet simple taste combinations. That said, I have a couple of minor quibbles with her cookbook. How, for instance, can she possibly characterize her Warm Zabaglione with Strawberries as "a light dessert for those watching their waistlines" when one of the five ingredients is six egg yolks? How can she instruct her readers to indefinitely refrigerate her Chocolate Nut Bark, when doing so almost ensures that it will absorb odors from other refrigerated items? She also, in recipes employing the use of raw eggs, makes no mention of the dangers associated with eating them.
Fairly minor quibbles aside, though, "Four-Star Desserts" is a treat. For all her formidable talent, Luchetti has a magical touch at creating recipes that even inexperienced cooks will feel confident in trying. The recipes are nicely laid out with ingredients and required equipment on the left-hand half of the page, and instructions on the right. Each is preceded with her thoughts on what makes that particular dessert memorable, as well as tips on making it as successful as possible. Having Emily Luchetti at your elbow in the kitchen is a very good thing, as is this book.
Emily Luchetti Rocks.......2000-01-13
A photograph in Four Star Desserts of a blackberry roulade, unadorned and pure, was the reason I bought the book. I must have baked that cake six times over the next week. Everyone thought I was crazy. I used her technique (for almond ice cream) of steeping almonds in milk to make an almond-infused brioche bread pudding, and her chocolate "brulee" topped my coconut custard. This book has given me pleasure and has sparked ideas for my own inventions. I am a pastry chef, too, and I can't get enough of Emily Luchetti.

The Definitive Josephus.......2000-01-28
Most will want to compare this edition to the Loeb Classics version. Loeb offers facing page Greek text, which this edition does not. However, since I don't read Greek, this was not a problem. Whereas Loeb carries a modicum of footnotes explaining disputed points, the Brill edition is about 75% commentary, contained in extensive and enlightening footnote/essays on every page. The general introduction to Josephus as well as the introduction to Antiquities in particular has something to say to both novice and the reader familiar with Josephan scholarship. My own interest is in the War and the Life, which will not be printed for a few years. So I ordered Antiquities to see whether the project was worthwhile for future reference. I will have no hestiation in ordering other volumes as they become available. Louis Feldman's masterful commentary is a compendium of current scholarship on Josephus' rendition of the Old Testament. Even Books III, which concern matters of Jewish law, chiefly as concerns ritual and observance, but also social strictures, were enlivened and made relevant to Josephus' aims and historical context by Dr. Feldman's expert insights. The indices key on ancient texts, including the Torah, Rabbinical commentary (Midrash) and parallel relevant Greek and Roman historical works, plus persons, places, and modern authors. I compared the translation of the opening paragraph to the same passage in the Loeb. The differences are quite interesting and clearly show how Dr. Feldman and his colleagues picked up nuances from the original that Thackeray (the Loeb translator) had missed. I unhesitatingly recommend this edition. Of course the entire set will be prohibitively costly. University libraries will carry them no doubt. However if you are intrigued with Josephus, as I am, you will want to own some selected volumes. This is truly a work of reference to which I will return again and again.
