wayward relationship.......2006-02-23
The book is not that bad -- as far as Harlequin books go. But the relationship described comes across as based on nothing more than lust and sex. It's a pity, the story had a decent premise. Not worth keeping.
Heroine's spoilt-rich friend dies in an accident. Heroine promises to raise the friend's baby boy. She hops from place to place for a few years, hiding from the said rich friend's brother, Caelan. He's a prince. And Mediterranean. And of Celt descent (what a mess :). And he wants the boy.
That's the premise. Here comes the rest of the story: Caelan finds heroine, moves her to fancy apartment, marries her (princedom et all), whisks her to exotic island for the night, falls in lust with her at about page 10. Bleagh.
Try Lynne Graham's "Bond of Hatred" instead.

Best SciFi.......2007-02-13
This book out of the Heechee saga is another terrific winner. Fredrick Pohl knows how to teach you the laws of the universe and make you laugh at the same time. The main character Robinette Broadhead is always entertaining!
Good space adventure........2006-09-13
Beyond the Blue Event Horizon is the second in Pohl's Heechee saga which posits a future where humanity looks to alien artifacts and technology to assist resolving the complications of overpopulation. In this book the story revolves around a mission to discover the Food Factory, a Heechee space station that is able to manufacture food from basic elements. The crew sent to explore and secure this station is a family of an elder male with two daughters, and the husband of one of the daughters. During the three year voyage the younger daughter grows into a hormonal 14-year-old which creates a lot of tension between the two sisters, particularly since the 14-year-old sister, Janine, is trying out her female wiles on her sister Lurvy's husband Paul.
What they find at the station is not what they expected create interesting twists to the story. Meanwhile on earth the protagonist of the first volume in the series, Robinette, is involved in financing the exploration. However, in a horrible accident his wife is seriously injured and goes through a series of harrowing and possibly fatal medical treatments. It is interesting that in the last book the story was about the grief of the loss of a wife, and this second book has a central theme of healing of the wife along with the sexually driven desire of Janine on the spaceship to explore her sexuality. There is a strong Jungian theme of restoration of the feminine in these books.
On the whole this was an enjoyable sci-fi tale. However the story digresses sometimes into scientific explanations delivered in large indigestible lumps that detract rather than add to the story. The strengths of Beyond the Blue Event Horizon are the human tales and relationships, and the adventure of space exploration.
Some neat ideas, but almost incoherent in its plotlines.......2006-07-06
To say this is a sequel to the award-winning (and brilliantly enjoyable) Gateway is both technically true and misleading. True, the main character is the same. Also true is the fact that it takes place in the same universe, more or less where Gateway left off. Unfortunately, this book reads like Pohl's notes for Gateway's background information, rather than a story worth telling.
That's not to say that the reading is not enjoyable - there are some neat parts to this book, and some interesting ideas. Unfortunately, you are left puzzled about what, exactly, Pohl meant to accomplish with this book. Without giving away any plot details, there are the following threads: 1. A the child of a Gateway prospector is marooned on a Heechee space station. 2. A group of astronauts attempt to capture the Food Factory. 3. Robin Broadhead, hero of Gateway, ponders how to rescue his girlfriend, trapped in a black hole. (but don't be fooled by the back-cover blurb, this is not a plotline so much as a "personality trait" of Robin - no attempt to made to rescue Klara). 4. Robin is sued by another prospector's next-of-kin. 5. A mysterious illness that decends on all mankind in 135-day intervals is investigated.
All these threads are intertwined, to be sure, but most of them are pointless. For example, the 135-day fever is explained, but nothing is done about it. When you read the explanation, surely this is the most important thing in the book! - how can this device be so powerful as to affect the entire human race? Similarly the lawsuit storyline - it's almost like a placefiller to allow time to pass and give Robin something to do while the astronauts explore the food factory and the space station.
The other big indication that this book was thrown together haphazardly is the structure of the point-of-view characters. He writes each chapter from someone's PoV, which is fine, but sometimes he uses 1st-person, other times 3rd-person. Both Robin and Hall are 1st-person narrators, but Hall then becomes a secondary character, and his sister-in-law becomes the PoV character (but she is not written in the 1st-person). It is only annoying (it's not confusing), but it makes the book feel like it was cobbled together out of entirely separate pieces.
Finally, I have a serious issue with a couple of physics points. His explanation of the Heechee fast-speed drive doesn't make any sense - even if you reduce mass of a ship to zero, you still cannot puch a massless particle faster than light (in a vacuum). Therefore, the fastest speed attainable by these Heechee ships should be the speed of light. Any trip to another star system should take 4 years or more.!
All of these complaints notwithstanding, the book is enjoyable to read, and there are some interesting sci fi ideas. It was not good enough to make me wish to continue reading any more of the Heechee saga books, however.
Denmark.......2006-03-24
It was interesting to see if the systems works when one orders books from the US - everything checked out and it is not the last time I order books from amazon.
WARNING!!!.......2004-04-14
If you loved the first book in the series, stop, and look for another book by another author. This is nowhere near the level of the acclaimed "Gateway." I was expecting a continuance of the Gateway-enigma, but what I recieved were too many answers to too few questions. What irks me about science fiction writers is the traditional attitude they have about writing a series of books extending from a usually excellent first novel. Larry Niven and his "Ringworld" novels, comes to mind. Another is Arthur C. Clarke and his "Rama" series. There must be a deep-seeded fear of failure for these men, or maybe they have become too comfortable in their genre to really challenge themselves anymore. Whatever the reason, this book is another example of an author playing it safe by branching out from a singularly brilliant novel. The result for me was, for the most part, a thoroughly bland experience. Mr. Pohl is a good writer, so I won't slash this book too much, but it was a disappointment. There are many other books out there, most of which are much better than this.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Earthway comes a collection of thoughtful and inspiring essays on nature and life. Together they light a path to genuine love and caring, for as we learn to recognize and respect the beauty in nature we learn, too, to appreciate the beauty in ourselves.
Everywhere we turn, nature is trying to bestow her gifts upon us whether we're ready to receive them or not. Here spiritual philosopher and naturalist Mary Summer Rain shows us how to open our eyes to see, how to open our ears to hear, and how to cultivate a perceptive mind and a sensitive heart so that we may gain access to the sacred knowledge of living right. We need to look beyond the awesome sunsets and beneath the splendid blanket of snow to where the true gifts lie, hidden, waiting for our minds to unwrap them and revel in their wisdom.
The jewels in Tao of Nature are invaluable gifts to readers ready to open themselves up to the wonder of Grandmother Earth. Once again, Mary Summer Rain has interwoven her observations as a naturalist with spiritual philosophy to share with the world the lessons of nature's beauty and power.

Not her best.......2004-07-18
I have read and loved all of her other books and was disgusted with this one. Her tone was getting close to condescending and she lectured on ad nauseum over concepts she has talked about a lot before. She brought up a few interesting topics but that was about it. I could barely make it through the book.
Magnificently Written,Engrossing and Enjoyable.......2003-08-03
I am giving this book a five star rating ,just like I give all of Mary Summer Rains books ,based on the informitive content.
The manor in which Mary cleverly potrays to us ,the reader, a down to earth, easy to understand personal demonstration of living a "spiritual way".
Mary and Sally teach us through their personal triumphs and/or trials and tribulations throughout the book how to apply the truths to everyday life.
Mary Summer Rain uses nature to teach life principals.............2002-12-19
I have read every book that Mary Summer Rain has written. The "Tao of Nature" is written as a continuing 'episode' in her life, using her day-to-day experiences to bring out the principals taught by nature. I feel that she captures the 'lessons' nature has to teach in her story-telling style, which brings her point into vivid view for her readers. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Mary's writings, and/or who is looking to nature to teach life lessons.
review.......2002-12-03
Mary has wrote MUCH better books I felt lectured and judged. Usually I stay up to read till 3am and this one I scanned the last 2 chapters. All the other ones were perfect till I read this one. I love Mary and her books I just felt there was alot of resentment coming from her and I was disappointed.

A Whole Bunch of Good Recipies.......2006-12-21
The first thing that attracted me to this book was the title -- Mexican-American Cooking. What we typically call 'Mexican Food' in this country really isn't at all like the foods that the typical restaruant will have as you progress away from the American influenced border towns. Mexican-American food is derived from the foods of interior Mexico, but these food have been heavily modified as they crossed border. And YES, Mexican-American food is the style of food that I happen to like.
Then when he was talking about favorite Mexican restaurants and he said 'These were places you needed to be - at least once a week.' And he started talking about going into withdrawal, he was talking my language. To feed my withdrawal symptoms I've gone seeking Mexican restaurants in London (much improved in recent years), Bremen Germany (the Guacamole was Pink), Taipai (not too bad if you just don't think of it as Mexican).
Anyway, he says that he has been collecting the recipies for 18 years. And he's done a supurb job. I've found a lot of things that I want to try.
One small complaint - in the appendix he lists some mail order sources for ingredients. Fine, but he doesn't give web sites where the products might be ordered. And, another source that I've found excellent for hard to find items is the Gourmet Foods section at Amazon. But a new hispanic grocery store just opened across town so I guess I really don't care.
Outstanding.......2006-05-13
I am not sure how I overlooked this book. The author deserves the top awards anyone can heap upon him. Well researched, and the history is extremely good. The recipes are extensive, wonderful, and covering every region. An outstanding book. Now I will have to look for other cookbooks from this author.
A FINE GUIDE TO MEXICAN CUISINE.......2005-06-15
Those of us who live in the Southwest simply have to have a periodic Tex-Mex fix, so we head for the nearest drive-in or our favorite Mexican restaurant. One of the best things we've done is buy a copy of La Cocina De La Frontera, a comprehensive collection of recipes for preparing Mexican-American dishes, and also a view of this particular ethnic cuisine from both a historical and culinary perspective.
Emphasizing the styles found in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the 349 page volume offers everything from Bebidas (drinks) to Postres y Dulces (desserts and sweets). In between you'll find flautas, enchiladas, beans, quesadillas, burritos, chiles relenos, and a host of other delicacies that Mexican food aficionados find irresistible.
After 18 years of research, James Peyton has collected what is in my estimation one of the finest guides to this popular cuisine. Also included is an appendix of mail order sources for some of the ingredients, plus hints for adapting recipes to low-fat and low-cholesterol diets.

just okay.......2004-03-27
this book is okay -- the projects are very ordinary and the fabric shown is not very designer like. There were some good project ideas but nothing very splashy. Much better books available.
Excellent instructions, fun to read.......2003-07-25
As a former technical writer, I am very critical of most instructional materials. This book, however, contains the best organized, clearest, most thorough, and best illustrated instructions I have ever seen. As an experienced sewer, I was impressed by the many sewing tips that I picked up from this book. The sections on decorative trims and buttons and buttonholes were especially helpful. The book was simply fun to read. The layout is pleasing, and the writing style is casual without being condescending or chatty. The ideas for window treatments are wide-ranging and creative. I originally borrowed this book from the library; now I'm going to buy a copy for myself.
Looking smart and fashionable without spending extravagantly.......2003-01-06
Highly recommended for the non-specialist general reader with a desire for home-enhancing do-it-yourself projects, More Splash Than Cash Window Treatments presents over 250 ideas and techniques for sprucing up any size or kind of window with just the right touch to complement the interior decoration of the rest of the home. Easy to follow step-by-step instructions succinctly cover everything from working with sheer fabrics to sewing on buttons, to installing a mounting board, employing classic motifs, and more. More Splash Than Cash Window Treatments is a truly great guide that puts its emphasis on looking smart and fashionable without spending extravagantly.
More Splash Than Cash Window Treatments.......2002-10-24
Home decorators from Dunces to Divas will love this book. The treatments are lovely but once again, Ms Babylon has outdone herself on the instructions. This book is packed with details, suggestions, hints, tips, all in easily understood, easy to follow instructions. I've been sewing my own window treatments for years and even I learned many time saving, workroom tips. I loaned my copy to my teenage daughters and they were able to design and complete window treatments for their rooms. This book gave them the tools and the confidence to tackle the project!
Thanks Donna and Victoria for another great hit!

EXCELLENT!.......2002-10-09
excellent ideas, excellent illustrations, and excellent instructions together make up a very useful book for the person who wants to design great window treatments. even i can do these! the book itself is brightly designed, therefore, making it fun to page through.
Book Description
Incorporating movement in the landscape is one of the hot trends in gardening today. As people invest more time and money in their homes, landscaping a primary focus. How can we make the outdoors more inviting? Paths, steps, and footbridges are three key elements that help define a landscape and how people move through it and enjoy it. An inviting path that meanders through a garden, steps that connect terraced outdoor "living rooms," and a footbridge that spans a small stream each serves a utilitarian purpose, but when designed creatively and well can infuse a property with an irresistible sense of wonder and delight.
In How to Build Paths, Steps & Footbridges, builder Peter Jeswald explains how to add practical and visually pleasing elements to any property. He advocates choices that complement, rather than dominate, the home and landscape and recommends natural and manmade materials appropriate for the goals and objectives of each project. Wood, masonry, stone, earth, and vegetation are all options he discusses for building and creating an environment that complements the topography.
Filled with color photographs, How to Build Paths, Steps & Footbridges also includes hundreds of clear instructional drawings of plans and construction techniques. Jeswald provides careful advice for every stage of a project--up-front planning, assessing a site, finalizing a design, and selecting proper tools and building materials for construction--all with the goal of providing a strong theoretical basis that will allow readers to achieve the best possible result: greater access to and interest in their outdoor spaces.

Paths Steps and Footbridges.......2005-07-11
A "fresh", well conceptualized and practical book that deals effectively and quite thoroughly with one of the two strategic components of any landscape --- the movement space. The other being landing or gathering space. The book is well illustrated and profusely augmented with simple clear diagrams. It benefits from a strong outline and simultaneous information on how to build paths, steps and footbridges It offers practical implementation tips. Stunning even inspiritational photographs complement the diagramatic graphics. A very good book for the "do it yourselfer" who could benefit from wisdom of those who have constructed well.
A Landscape Architects View.......2005-03-30
Outstanding selection of photos defining numerous material selections and their designed use.
Paramount to the process is Peter's description of the planning and design process. Easy to follow, thorough, and it leads the amature and professional through the inital idea(s) to a well defined project - bricks and mortar.
The step by step direction tool(s), material(s) and know how should result in a successful project for friends and family to enjoy and rave about. Just look at the pictures. HUNGER!!!
A wonderful book for young and old, amature and professional.

If you have any serious interest in movies, you've got to read NPR pundit Kate Buford's sharp-eyed, meticulous, intelligent account of Burt Lancaster's life and work. The most inward of actors--director Luchino Visconti called him "the most perfectly mysterious man I ever met"--Lancaster spurned most press attention. Buford proves there was more to the No. 1 box-office star of Elmer Gantry and From Here to Eternity than muscles and big capped teeth. Growing up in Mob-ruled Harlem (Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll perpetrated the famous "baby massacre" on Lancaster's block), Lancaster ran off to the circus as an acrobat, went to war, and hit stardom at 33. Sweet Smell of Success cowriter Clifford Odets said there were seven Burts, including "Inscrutable Burt" and "Monster Golem Burt." He intimidated Montgomery Clift and Norman Mailer, threatened to toss his producer out a window, slugged Margot Kidder, put a girlfriend in the hospital by hurling her in the air just like his character in Brute Force, and made Kirk Douglas cry by mocking his elevator shoes. After he seduced costar Yvonne De Carlo in her mink coat (he also bedded Deborah Kerr and Marlene Dietrich), the mother of his five children comforted herself with innumerable minks and bottles of booze. His kids were neglected; the son whose baseball team Lancaster coached wrote The Bad News Bears, capturing Burt in the gruff Matthau character.
Buford notes that the seducer Gantry and control freak J.J. Hunsecker were closest to the real Burt, while the Birdman of Alcatraz was who he wanted to be. She takes us behind the scenes, showing precisely what the actor contributed (and threatened to undermine) in his great films, including his Oscar win as producer, Marty. Buford also explains how his independent film company anticipated many later trends but blew it by overspending on script development, and assesses his brilliant deconstruction of his own legend as the lion in winter of Local Hero and Atlantic City. And she puts all gossip in perspective. Burt's jealousy as he fumed in his car outside the house where his ex Shelley Winters was bedding Marlon Brando had a film-historical importance: Brando also stole Stanley Kowalski and the Godfather roles from Burt, and he represented the Method acting style Burt strenuously opposed for the first half of his career. Because he was too smart and curious to stick with one persona, and more interested in art than money, Lancaster needs a landmark biography. He's got one now. And you must check out his full-backside nudity on the back cover! --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Startlingly handsome, witty, fanatically loyal, charming, scary, and intensely sexual, Burt Lancaster was the quintessential bête du cinéma, one of Hollywood's great stars. He was, as well, an intensely private man, and he authorized no biographies in his lifetime. Kate Buford is the first writer to win the cooperation of Lancaster's widow, close friends, and colleagues, and her book is a revelation.
Here is Lancaster the man, from his teenage years, bolting the Depression-era immigrant neighborhood of East Harlem where he grew up for the life of a circus acrobat -- then the electric New York theater of the 1930s, then the dying days of vaudeville. We see his production company -- Hecht-Hill-Lancaster -- become the biggest independent of the 1950s, a bridge between the studio era and modern filmmaking. With the power he derived from it we see him gain a remarkable degree of control, which he used to become the auteur of his own career. His navigation through the anti-Communist witch-hunts made him an example of a star who tweaked the noses of HUAC and survived. His greatest roles -- in Sweet Smell of Success, Elmer Gantry, Birdman of Alcatraz, The Swimmer, Atlantic City -- kept to the progressive edge that had originated in the tolerant, diverse, reforming principles of his childhood. And in the extraordinary complete roster of his films -- From Here to Eternity, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Judgment at Nuremberg, The Leopard, 1900, and Field of Dreams, among many others -- he proved to be both a master of commercial movies that pleased a worldwide audience and an actor who pushed himself beyond stardom into cinematic art. Kate Buford has written a dynamic biography of a passionate and committed star, the first full-scale study of one of the last great unexamined Hollywood lives.
Customer Reviews:
Deja vu.......2006-07-11
After reading Kate Buford's tedious and somewhat salacious bio of Burt Lancaster, I read an earlier account of the actor's life: Against Type: The Biography of Burt Lancaster by Gary Fishgall (published in 1995, not long after Lancaster's death). Not only is Fishgall's version more interesting, but I felt a strong sense of deja vu as I read it, thinking that Buford obviously used Fishgall's book as a primary source for her own book. Entire sentences and passages mirrored many written by Fishgall--if not word for word, certainly in tone and sequence. If you want to see a photograph of Burt's bare behind and ponder unfounded speculations that the actor was gay or bisexual, buy Buford's book. If you want a more solid, well-documented biography of the man, choose Fishgall's.
MORE FICTION THAN FACT...DESIGNED TO SELL NOT TO ENLIGHTEN.......2006-01-31
Please permit me to straighten out a few allegations promulgated in this rather prurient (because it sells) book. One, B.L. was NOT an abusive man toward women (or anyone else)at all. One isolated incident do not a misogynist, or history of violence, make. One of his later relationships involved a hot-tempered lady who broke a champagne bottle over his head, so that rather belies his abuse with females...and no, he did not retaliate.
Also, another allegation, and one clearly designed to mislead the reader in addition to pumping up sales: B.L., at NO time, was EVER, in ANY way homosexual or bi-sexual...ever.
As to what his sons did or didn't do in a neighbor's pool, is another allegation and a rather cheap shot; even if it IS true or has ANY basis in fact, who among us has led a perfect childhood? Who among us has never behaved in a childish way when we were children?
This is tawdry writing at it's zenith, an unnecessary "factoid" thrown in for sensation rather than edification. If it is true, who cares? Why put it in? Does it MATTER what B.L.'s sons did when they were kids?
Ms. Buford has done some research, for what that is worth, but did not bother to either verify or confirm any of her allegations, so they must remain just that, allegations...however, the cat is already out of the bag and her inclusion of unsubstantiated "facts" helped the sale of her book, so she got what she wanted in the first place.
B.L. was a consummate actor, a loving, generous untamed man who changed careers in his mid forties from that of a trapeze artist in the circus to acting...and he took care of 17 of his circus friends for life after he began his acting career. Of course he had his faults; ALL of us do, but few of us have them the focus of a book slanted to sell no matter what, much as the tabloids do in the checkout line in the supermarket...
He made friends and enemies on the way, and carved a unique niche for himself in the most competitive profession in the world. His personal relationships were intense, close and very very strong; however, it must be noted again, that he was NOT homosexual OR bi-sexual; this is a craven, distasteful and rather cheap ploy on the part of Ms. Buford to spice up her book. Sex sells and scandal sells even better...and there isn't an author alive who doesn't want to make money, but many refrain from outright lies, libel and slander of someone they never met or knew personally.
As for B.L. fuming in his car over Shelley Winters and Brando, Winters was more likely to spend time "fuming", as she was the aggressive partner in that relationship, admitting in her own book how she resented him for wanting to be with his wife for the birth of one of their sons...
There was a book about Errol Flynn some years back that alleged he was not only bi-sexual (again, not true) but also a NAZI SPY.
The point is, anyone can say anything about a celebrity once they're dead.
He did not engage in violence with all his relationships and he did not have sex with men and he was not parodied in Bill Lancaster's movie "Bad News Bears"; he was light years away from Matthau's persona, and certainly never "gruff."
BUT: People believe exactly what they WANT to believe and some enjoy believing anything bad or off color about famous people because it makes their own lives a little exciting for a time...so, that is the truth, and it is up to those who read this book whether they choose to take it as gospel or merely a semi-informative read.
B.L. was a business genius; he OWNED his movies and formed a production company with Ben Hecht to retain control over all his work, and in addition to Hecht-Lancaster he also founded Norlan Productions, named for Norma, his wife.
He kept his mystery and movie star image all of his life and was a very generous, loving man with a great sense of humor.
So, read it with a grain of salt and remember, it is easy to play hard and fast with the truth when the subject is no longer alive to refute it.
The real B.L. can be seen in any one of his movies, and IMO, Sweet Smell of Success is his best work, alongside Atlantic City. Those who knew this fascinating man personally know the truth, and hopefully, people will remember him more for his art than for the smarmy words of someone wanting to make money off a true artist.
Those who can, do; those who can't write smutty biographies...
Riveting reading.......2004-07-08
I enjoyed this book a great deal. While I was familiar with most of Lancaster's films, his private life was a mystery. One thing I do have to say for the author: she's thorough. Not to the point of boredom, but all her bases are covered. There's just enough information on Lancaster's background, and I found the story of his parents as fascinating as his. The accounts of his physical feats during his "circus" years were remarkable, as were his inner conflicts over some of the parts he played. Of special interest was the Hect collaboration and foray into producing. My only dislike of the book (and this echoes another reviewer) was Buford's teasing of the bisexuality theme. Why make oblique references to this unless you're going to give us some facts? Was he or wasn't he? There should be more to substantiate this, given the fact that a)This was Hollywood and everyone knew everyone else's business, and b) Lancaster is dead and, according to even the most die-hard Hollywood standards, this makes for fair game. But when all is said and done, this is a great read. I highly recommend this, along with Gerald Clarke's bio on Truman Capote.
The Story of a Legend.......2003-09-24
I hadn't paid very much attention to Burt Lancaster until just a few months ago. I didn't know what an outstanding actor he was. After reading this book, I feel I know him even more. This book is very detailed and thorough. It's obvious Kate Buford put enormous amounts of time and research into it. She did a great job. If you, like me, want to discover the real Burt Lancaster, this is the book to buy.
A dangerous man!.......2003-07-18
Compliments to the author! This is probably the best investigated star biography I know - and the bluntest. Burt Lancaster grew up in New York under desolate conditions. His mother beat him. He found diversion in sports and practiced frequently. He became a true muscle man and even worked as acrobat. His magnificent body and his colgate smile became his biggest assets in Hollywood, but he wanted more: He gave dynamic performances in "issue" films, like SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, ELMER GANTRY and THE SWIMMER and became also a successful producer. Like most stars of his generation he survived the sixties in westerns, but late in life he was rewarded with worthwile roles in ATLANTIC CITY and LOCAL HERO. At one point, the author complains that today's filmgoers throw him in the same pot as Kirk Douglas and Charlton Heston, yet, despite her obvious admiration of his talents, something drives her to unveil the dark side of his life.
I fully expected to discover some skeletons in his closet, but I didn't expect them to rattle so loud: It's neither the hint at bisexuality that shocks me, nor the revelation that a government agency kept a file about his secret life, that included "orgies" with Rock Hudson (She does not tell us what exactly happened at those orgies). No, the most shocking moment comes when Buford reveals that once he threw a woman to the floor with brute force. This case of grievous bodily harm was settled out of court, but I think it is too serious to be excused with charming Walt Whitman citations. Yet - we had been warned before: he was always on his guard, she tells us, because "He knew that he was able to kill a man". Like his character in THE LEOPARD he took what he wanted with the right of the sovereign. His marriage was a "must" marriage, but it produced 7 children, despite his wife's serious alcohol problems. He was apparently a dedicated father. Some of the details in this book excite real awe for the author, not because they are unsavory, but because they made it in this book at all: What Lancaster's sons did to a neighbor's swimming-pool (exactly what you think), that digestion was a topic at dinner table...How she made her interview-partners babble! Lancaster was a star who kept an "entourage": Generous in financial matters, he kept many people at arm's length, hereby preventing them, of course, to stand on their own feet. No one hindered Kate Buford to write a pretty, fan-pleasing hagiography. That she opted for honesty instead does her credit: Those are the only biographies worth reading, even if they are not always pleasant. Well done, Mrs. Buford!

A Professional Job.......2003-08-08
Gary Fishgall is very good on the professional life of actors. He's written about James Stewart, Burt Lancaster, and Gregory Peck. Fishgall seems not very much interested in [physical activity] and social name-dropping, which is fine with me. He gives the bare facts of the actor's social life without the juicy and sordid detail for which many people read star biographies.
On the actor's professional life and accomplishments, Fishgall is excellent. He covers childhood and youth thoroughly as it relates to the future career. He discusses every professional job the actor ever had. You learn not only about the big successes, with which you may already be familiar, but also the small successes and the failures. Nothing relating to the professional life is left out. You learn what the subject thought about his coworkers and what they thought about him.
I have now read two of Fishgall's bios and plan to read the third. This is just the kind of information I find fascinating. If you enjoy any of Fishgall's bios, you may also enjoy Vincente Minnelli's "I Remember It Well." Minnelli's story-telling mode is very similar to Fishgall's. He dwells on his professional life and downplays the personal.
Increases appreciation of one of Hollywood's Greats.......1997-09-23
Chronicles the professional life and accomplishments of one of Hollywood's most loved stars, Burt Lancaster. I was disappointed with the lack of insight into the personal life of Lancaster, but as a biography of his professional life it was excellent. It was fascinating to read of the diametrically opposite views that co-stars and directors had for him, ranging from ardour to hate. This is an unbiased portrait of a great star
