the surprising weight of a simple act.......2004-11-30
After having stumbled upon Lydia Davis three years ago, I read every one of her books, and fell quite in love with them. I proceed, as though I am reading a list. Every detail is a full bite. There are no flowers; it is not sentimental. Her prose is simple and clear. When I am finished, there is such incredible meaning that I am surprised by what I have found, and how easy it was to get there. That is a true pleasure.
This short story collection is my favorite of them all. It includes "The Mice" and "The Professor," two of her absolute best. Lydia Davis is a master of the everyday. She places her finger on the spot where our actions speak of our emotions, and reading her creates such a resonation, gives such weight to the simplest act, because when I read it, I know it. I recognize the act, and the paranoia, or the hurt, or the confused love that is behind it. I know the subtle emotions that are drawn on the line of the moment. She writes as though she knows the excuses we make, the way we cover our weaknesses.
Some people find her short forms troubling. But I find them very comforting. That she can bring an idea to completion in a few sentences is incredible to me. There is a weight in each of them, and they feel to be very carefully considered and broad, rather than accidental and finite.
These are brave and unusual stories. I find it easier to approach her with suspicion, to question whether in fact, she is writing about a mouse, or a house, or a fish in a tank. She is brilliant and, all at once, like everyone and no one I know.
Some stories resonate, others don't.......2003-04-23
While Lydia Davis can crystallize so much in a short short, her metafictional style begins to cloy. It may be the first person point of view, or the use of present tense, or the constant references to what the character is writing at that moment, but so many of these stories sound like they flow from the author's journal, rather than from a planned fictional arc. Frequently they are mere moments, rather than stories in which something happens, and leave this reader--who picked up the book looking for something more daring--longing for the traditional. Overall, this was disappointing.
A Master of the Short Short.......2002-08-30
This collection of 51 short stories, little fictions, and prose poems by Lydia Davis intrigues and rewards. The pieces come in every length. There's the 46-word "Odd Behavior," and at the center of the book, Davis gives us a forty page story, "Lord Royston's Tour," an extraordinary period travelog, written perfectly in the syntax and idioms of early nineteenth century Britain: "...a good deal tossed and beaten about off the Skaw, before sailing up the river." We learn in after-credits that the tale was adapted from a memoir Davis found, written in 1838.
She employs many styles, tones, and voices. The pieces come variously comic, peculiar, tragic, surreal, mysterious, whimsical, quirky, lyrical, cerebral, and earthy. Some are faintly Kafakaesque, Borgesian, Beckett-echoing, and most have plenty of Davis's originality. Some are very ambitious, others narrow in intent. Each defines its own terms as a fiction. If the reader finds one piece less than compelling, he eagerly continues, if only to see what she will come up with next. And is soon again enthralled. There are meta-fictions, such as "The Center of the Story," and a number of the pieces seem to be written for an audience of writers and sophisticated readers. Other pieces aim more broadly.
In "This Condition" the narrator conveys a state of generalized erotic feeling. It's lovely, sexy writing, a prose poem, with no single object of desire-- sexuality finding its echo in the universe of animals, minerals, vegetables; ideas, maps, texts. A sort of erotica for the lover of life.
In "The Professor," Davis's narrator, teaching English out West, reveals a fantasy of marrying a cowboy.
"...I started listening to country Western music on the car radio, though I knew it wasn't written for me."
She fastens on someone in her class who, though he'll have to do, doesn't quite fill the cowboy bill:
"The facts weren't right. He didn't work as a cowboy but at some kind of job where he glued the bones of chimpanzees together. He played jazz trombone..."
They have one odd date together, but nothing comes of it, and now years later, our professor, married and living back East, still finds herself subject to the cowboy daydream. Davis ends on a delightful goofy/comic note:
"I'm so used to the companionship of my husband by now that if I were to marry a cowboy I would want to take him with me, though he would object strongly to any move in the direction of the West, which he dislikes...."
"It would end, or begin, with my husband and me standing awkwardly there in front of the ranch house, waiting while the cowboy prepared our rooms."
This collection exemplifies the wild and wonderful possibilities in very short fiction where the only real rule is: Make it good. Davis knows how.
critics may praise, but...........2002-06-06
I have heard such good things about Lydia's short stories that I almost feel the need to apologize for writing this, as it seems that I am the dissenting voice.
Plain and simply, I could not get into this book. After each story I expected the next to get better, I looked for a saving grace, but I found none. Her voice is a departure away from the usual and that is refreshing, but I could'nt get over the feeling that anyone might sit down and write something much like this. There are some books I have not enjoyed at first reading, only to go back to them at another time, in another mood and found that my feelings had changed. I am sorry to say this was the case with Almost No Memory. I even found it difficult to finish, but I wanted to give this book the benefit of the doubt, a last chance to redeem itself.
I would not say it was a waste of time, but I can say that it was worth my time , either.

This is an interesting collection of short-short stories. Many are little more than vignettes and sketches, but they all seek to make the reader think about something. A truly unusual writer. Recommended.

Interesting, but not essential reading.......2005-01-18
I bought Sandman Vol 1, Preludes and Nocturnes, without really knowing anything about Sandman. I liked it so much I bought and devoured the other nine volumes as soon as I was able. Then I reread them all, slowly and meticulously. The second reading was even better than the first, but still I was hungry for more.
So I bought this book, The Sandman Companion. I was hoping for an in-depth analysis of the series. I wanted to see inspirations, symbology, hidden meanings, historical references. And I got it... sort of. It's kind of a lo-cal, lo-carb version of what I was hoping for.
About half of the text is one long interview with Neil Gaiman, broken up by story and spread out over the length of the book. Also included are concept drawings and the author's own exposition on various stories. Much of the work is focused on the creative process.
I was hoping for a scholarly guide to the subtle details, with footnotes, suggested readings, and all the rest of the trimmings you'd find in a serious study of such a nuanced work as The Sandman.
This book is more like "The Making of The Sandman," and unfortunately reads like a really long article from People magazine.
If you're looking for interviews, then this book would be an excellent buy.
But personally, I got more from Googling "Sandman annotations."

This book provides essential insight, not only into Neil Gaiman's storyline and characters, but into his path to literary fame. I bought the book before I purchased all of the Sandman trade paperbacks, and it served as an appetizer to complete my collection. I constantly refer back to it, and discover something new each time.

Tells you little you couldn't get from the comics........2003-06-14
A good "companion" book to Sandman would tell you about Neil Gaiman's thousands of sources for his stories. Who is Lyta Hall in the DC universe? Who is Element Girl? How about literary and historical sources? Where does the phrase "omnia mutantur, nihil interit" come from, who used it, and what did it mean then? Who was Aleister Crowley? Instead, most of this book is a recap of the story -- Cliff's Notes for a comic -- with a few visits from Neil talking about the inspiration for this or that! Very disappointing. Not worth the money.

Coming Out Spiritually is structured by author Christian de la Huerta's idea that gay people have traditionally assumed 10 spiritual roles or archetypes, and continue to assume them today. These include, among others, "creator of beauty," "mediator," "shaman," and "healer." This understanding of gay people's spirituality draws on a number of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sufism, and Taoism. After establishing his theoretical understanding of gay spirituality, de la Huerta suggests spiritual practices (ranging from meditation to healing to Sufi dancing) that can help readers achieve greater spiritual integrity. Perhaps the most interesting passages in the book consider how sex itself can express spiritual devotion. "When we learn to reunite sex and Spirit in our lives, we will experience change and healing beyond our wildest dreams," de la Huerta writes. Coming Out Spiritually describes a mode of spirituality that has previously been explored in the work of Andrew Harvey and Matthew Fox, among others. Christian de la Huerta is equally passionate, and his message--that the coming-out process, when understood in spiritual terms, never ends--is an important one. This book may be a bit confusing to gay people just beginning to come out. (Like Harvey and Fox, de la Huerta sometimes uses jargon that obscures his arguments.) I feel that the author has made a signifcant positive contribution in my journey of self acceptance and self love as a gay person. The book puts into perspective the worlds's religions. It shows that religion and sexuality are not mutually exclusive. It serves as another portal to understanding religion undiluted by messages of self hatred and guilt.

I had the honor of listening to Christian de la Huerta speak and discuss Coming Out Spiritually, The Next Step. I bought the book for two reasons: The Title and the Gay Man behind the title. This was "The Next Step" for me ... I had struggled and been brought to my knees time and time again as I walked the bumpy road of fully embracing myself (and "coming out") as a beautiful lesbian. Now, I needed to fully find my place in spirituality and "come out" again - as a spiritual lesbian. I listened to (and watched) Mr. de la Huerta speak about his journey and how the book Coming Out Spiritually came to be ... he was articulate, passionate, engaging, intelligent, easy going, touchable and loveable. I felt all of this from my seat in the audience. I not only was eager to read his book (and get his autograph) but I wanted this beautiful gay man in my life. The same stunning man I listened to - came fully alive in each page of his book. It's an accessible book - that made me think, challenged my religious beliefs, helped me create spiritual beliefs & values, and made me thirsty for more queer spiritual knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Faces and Passion. I am learning how to bring together sex and spirit. Also, Appendix 1 - was very educational (A Quick Guide to the World's Spiritual Traditions for Queer Seekers). Finally, Mr. de la Huerta drove me to understand my place in the world as a queer person of faith. I knew that it was time to "Come Out Spiritually." I grew to step more fully into my role as a queer spiritual healer. I carry no shame as I talk freely about my role in the world as a spiritual lesbian. I have read and re-read Coming Out Spiritually over the years. I have bought this book for dozen of friends over the years. Please give yourself the gift of purchasing this book ... Christian de la Huerta's insightful book digs deep into the reality that anyone: straight or GLBT people can be lead spiritual and religious lives.
For anyone who has just come out, or has been on this journey for a long time and is trying to reconnect or catch up with spirituality and trying to lead a life that is meaningful, "Coming Out Spiritually" is a must-read book.
This book has shown me that I can make a difference in my own, personal world and in the world at large. And I can achieve through my own spirituality and personal religious upbringing.
A great book to help anyone understand what it means to be a spiritual or religious person in this vast world we live in.
An Anthology of Spirituality.......2003-12-12
This book discusses a number of ways of "coming out." But de la Huerta concentrates on a spiritual foundation for this. He begins his book with a story from a meeting of people from around the world forming United Religions. The purpose is to find common ground among the world's religious traditions. At this conference he spoke up about including gay people. From some of the positive reception Huerta received, he continued discussions and developing research for this book .
In chapter one he names ten ways gay people are spiritual gifts to the world. He presents evidence of these roles throughout history and in different cultures. He stresses that being gay includes these types of dispositions, such as the caregiver, the risk taker, etc. It is true that gay people experience these ten dispositions, but so do straight people. Yet in numerous cultures the one who plays two sexes or changes their way of being is viewed as a manifestation of the presence of God in their society and they are respected and their advice followed.
Huerta explores the background of many of the world's religions. Through them he discusses different spiritual disciplines people could practice to become aware of their own spirituality and connection to God. That chapter becomes somewhat tedious in that everything presented is not going to be for everyone reading the book. That chapter is best skimmed over and passages resonating with the reader can be explored.
The last chapter of the book stresses doing things. He presents a number of stories of people in traditional religions, non-traditional religions and in non-sectarian services. He tries to show how these gay people find their spiritual well-being by putting their spirituality to work. This sounds like a Protestant/Catholic faith/works dialogue. What Huerta is stressing is that there are needs in the world around us, our neighborhoods and cities. Gay people do have disposition for service and leadership. They can find spiritual health as well as personal well-being in taking part. Sometimes this can lead to understanding.
There are some interesting discussions of spirituality in this book by several people Huerta has interviewed. Other people's stories of coming out are touching and challenging. This is a good book to read for information. His index in the back offers lists of religions and services for gay people to consider.

not what i was looking for. I was expecting a detailed account of making a certain type of lei that honors the hawaiian traditions of lei making. This book is truly a commercialized version of simply making necklaces out of all kinds of seeds, primarily from trees native to hawaii. I will not use the methods in this book, I am undecided as to whether I will keep this book to protect the hawaiian traditions from the bastardized processes suggested in this book, or if I will simply sell it at garage sale prices to allow someone who might enjoy it to utilize the techniques for their creative endeavors. Be well. Find peace.

If you like Martha's style, and I do, then you will love this book. The photography is gorgeous. This book explains in detail how Martha and her staff of designers put a room together in terms of color. She only uses one color palette per room, which explains why her decor always has the same look, no matter what the style of furniture. This will be a favorite of mine for a long, long time.

Absolutely beautiful.......2007-04-19
This book is a gorgeous example of what a monograph should be. Its heavy paper stock and color reproduction does Marc's glorious colors justice, and the pictures are given the room, the white space, and the high print quality they deserve. The price is likely too high for someone unfamiliar with his work to take the gamble, but for those who already have an appreciation for Marc, I would urge them to consider investing in this lovely collection rather than any number of lesser books.

The book really is a treat. Very much like actually attending a major
art retropspective at a museum. A big plus of the book is the series of pictures of drawings that one rarely sees in any exhbition particualry of this artist. The text is well structured and the ideas fluent. The extent of the examination of paintings has depth and is a visual delight. Truly a book to have in one's collection as well as to share.

I found in Amazon this great book, of one of the most important painters that headed the modern art in painting in germany. It is very difficult to find books from this artist, part of the Blue Rider Grup (Der Blaue Reiter). So it is great that amazon provided us with such a treasure.

Franz MArc was one of the pioneers, inthe awakening of the 20th century insearch for a whole new pictorial language, and what would become abstractionism. One of the highlights of german Expressionismus, Franz MArc was best known for his works on animals, always developing his painting in order to catch the very deep soul of the animals and human feelings as well, in a way to expresse a kind of simbiosis where we may feel that that we're all as one in nature, looking for our home and shelter facing a wild world.
Susanna does a very good job with a very delightful work on Marc's life and work, and there's a great variety of visual information that sum up very well Marc's career.
This is highly recomended for those who cannot afford some more expensive books and appreciate modern art and, more specificly, german expressionism.
Thanks Marc for sharing your soul with us in your brief passage in this world.

Seminal 20th Century Art Document.......2007-09-21
The editors, Kandinsky and Marc, put together this manifesto before World War I. It's an essential document for understanding the artistic ferment in Germany, France and Russia in the early part of the 20th Century.
Marc died at Verdun in 1916; Kandinsky pursued a successful career, and died in Paris during World War II. Both men believed that artists were the spiritual leaders of the future--a belief that still reverberates today.

Like no other artist, Franz Marc pursued the representation of the horse--a central topic in the fine arts--as his life's work. As a painter and co-founder of the "Blaue Reiter" he created symbolic, visionary images which today stand among the icons of modernism. This publication presents an overview of Marc's paintings, drawings, gouaches and a number of famous postcards--from his nature studies of 1905 and 1906 to the sketches he made on the eve of World War I. During this short period of time, the horse motif became increasingly central, especially after Marc moved from Munich to the secluded upper Bavarian village of Sindelsdorf. With a skill for precise observation and intuitive understanding, Marc attempted an ''animalization of art,'' in which the horse became both subject and expression of the hope for better and more organic existence.

Exceptional art book.......2001-04-06
Even though I'm a professional artist, I don't normally buy art books of this sort (display books about a single artist). And I'm not even all that big a fan of the art of Franz Marc, although I do have some interest in his painting. However, this book really stands out. The reproductions are absolutely exquisite, with rich colors and good detail, and the pages themselves, physically, have a nice texture to them. Additionally, a lot of the pictures that are included in the book aren't all that familiar and are not usually seen in books about the artist. The writings about and by the artist are also very insightful and made me want to know more about him, and to really care about his work in a way I never had before. This is an exceptionally beautiful art book, and if you like the work of Franz Marc you will love this.

When Peter Gzowski died in January 2002, millions of Canadians felt a sense of bereavement. The magical intimacy of radio had meant that for them Peter Gzowski was a friend, one they would miss. So they poured out their feelings with rare eloquence, in newspapers, magazines and on CBC Radio.
This book collects the best of these tributes. The contributors include some of the most thoughtful and articulate people in the country: writers like Alice Munro and Jane Urquhart; fellow journalists like Robert Fulford; broadcasters like Michael Enright; and commentators like Stuart Maclean and Rex Murphy.
Yet matching the contributions by the great and famous, the people who knew Peter Gzowski well, are the memories sent in by ordinary Canadians – from their tractors or fishing boats or their kitchens or offices – who felt that they knew him, and whose lives he had touched. By letter, by e-mail and in phone calls they sent in their memories, touching, affectionate, varied, often surprising and in summary forming a delightful tribute.
The selection of the very best of these tributes was made by Peter’s long-time editor Edna Barker, his partner Gill Howard, and by his colleague Shelagh Rogers.
Royalties from this book will go to two of Peter Gzowski’s favourite charities – Frontier College, to fight illiteracy, and Trent University’s Peter Gzowski Scholarship, to encourage greater contact between Trent students and Canada’s North.
