Book Description
A gifted artist and writer, Branwell Bronte, an only son, is expected to make the family fortune and distinguish the Bronte name. Instead, he dies at 31 from alcohol and opium abuse. Painstakingly tutored at home by his father, Branwell and his sisters write endless stories about imaginary worlds far from their bleak parsonage home. As his sisters spin the stories that will immortalize them, Branwell sinks under the weight of great expectations. With language as rich and dark as the moors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, Douglas A. Martin probes the locus where history and myth collide, and uncovers Branwell’s lost loves, thwarted talent, and possible homosexuality. Maintaining the haunting quality of childhood memory throughout, Bronte Boy is a genre-bending exploration of the tragic figure of Branwell Bronte and the dismal, dazzling landscape that inspired his sisters to greatness.
Customer Reviews:
A poetic novel / biography of the Bronte brother.......2007-10-09
This isn't a straightforward biography of Branwell Bronte, it is much better than that.
Douglas Martin is a poet and this book is a beautiful poetic dream, using the dark, damp, brooding atmosphere of the moors and parsonage to set the scene. Branwell's relationship with his sisters, his involvement with their writings, his drug and alcohol abuse and eventual downfall are all brilliantly portrayed.
Douglas Martin has a deceptively simple style of writing, very easy to read. I don't know of any other author who can convey so much meaning and emotion in so few words. He never tries to give a complete picture, the narrative is fragmentary, and he doesn't draw conclusions. Subtly outlining such issues such as Branwell's sexuality and his sudden dismissal from his post as tutor at Thorp Green, he leaves it to the readers to decide for themselves what actually happened. His extensive knowledge of the Bronte family and their writings comes across clearly.
It's tempting to read the book quickly, but don't do that - you will miss a lot of the subtleties in the text. The more you reread this book, the better it gets - brilliant!
The brother who was painted out of his picture.......2007-08-15
BRANWELL is an historical novel which tells the story of the Bronte family from the perspective of the black sheep brother, about whom most readers only know he was painted out of the family portrait. Like Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea (about the first Mrs. Rochester in Jane Eyre), Branwell enhances any reading of the sister's novels.

Book Description
"I will wed only my one true love!" declared Princess Brianna despite King Henry's decree that she marry one of the sons of the man who had conquered her family's castle. So Brianna issued a seemingly impossible challenge: He who returned with a gift that made her laugh would win her hand. And thus began the bride quest of the three brothers Fitzgavin. . . .
Burke and Rowan, knights both, set out at her command. Only Luc remained, refusing to indulge the whims of the glorious Irish princess. Even Brianna's legendary beauty could not tempt him--until she invaded his senses . . . and his soul. But Luc thought a princess had no place in the life of a battle-weary warrior who vowed to lay down his sword forever--until he was forced to take up arms to protect the fair maiden who had seized his heart by divine right.

Some parts good, some not.......2007-05-25
I liked the idea of one son refusing to participate in the quest for an item to win the bride. By staying home he got to know her and won her over that way, even though he wasn't planning to. Most of it was a nice story, but there were times I wished the story were over. I even skimmed a few pages. The conflict that caused her to leave him toward the end was an incorrect assumption on her part. I was diasappointed that the author couldn't come up with something better to create conflict. Sexual content: moderate.
My favorite.......2006-07-26
This was the first Claire Delacriox book I read and it is still my favorite of hers. It got me hooked. I've read it over and over. Great reading!
Just amazing!.......2005-04-28
I had never been into romance and happened to run across this book at a yard sale. I figured for a dollar it wouldnt hurt to try adn the book just blew me away it was so amazing, i passed it around to my friends who found it equally amazing. I was so upset when i fininsh the book because it was over but also couldnt wait to read the rest of the series. I assure you this series will make you want to read them over and over!
Not my type of story.......2002-05-17
I was really looking forward to this book, and the entire 'bride quest'series, but I didn't like most of the characters in 'The Princess'. I found Brianna a lukewarm heroine at best, throughout the book her childish efforts to deliberately misunderstand everything happening around her were exhausting. I did like the hero, Luc, and Ms. Delacroix wasted a fine character by inserting him into this slow-moving story. By the time the murders began, I was scanning each paragraph for the main idea and wishing the action would speed up, or the whole thing would just come to an end. Although I didn't like this story, I am going to try again with 'The Damsel' and 'The Heiress' and see if the 'bride quest' gets any better.
Outstanding book........2002-04-13
The first book I have read of Claire Delacroix and I will now collect all of them. I love Luc and Brianna.

Sci-Fi Lover.......2006-03-10
I think that this story has been told before and been told better. I did not enjoy it.
A truly cyclonic novel .......2005-09-12
The second book in Sharon Gilbert's Mytharc series reads like today's (and possibly even more frightening, tomorrow's) headlines. A flu pandemic as a catalyst for global government? A string of geneticists mysteriously dying like flies? If one didn't know Sharon had independently published this book in 2003 before it was optioned by Whitaker house this year, it would be easy to believe that a novel of such contemporary insights was written as a reflection of recent headlines. No wonder [...] once referred to Sharon as a prophetess.
One thing is certain. You'll never take a flu shot for granted again. Imagine germ warfare combining bird flu with Ebola that goes to work in minutes!
As The Armageddon Strain unfolds, Dr. Maggie Taylor's father, a genetic scientist, passes away under curious circumstances. While coping with his tragedy and drudging through the pains of her imminent divorce, two men, both with different agendas, enter her life. Simultaneously an avian flu sweeps the country, and the epidemic shows signs of jumping the species barrier. How will the government contain the situation? Special implantable microchips with biowarfare applications have been designed that will be injected into the masses under authority of Martial Law. Homeland Security begins the vaccinations, called Project BioShield, employing contractors BioStrain and Grayson Labs. Yet something strange is up with those little chips.
With this all-to-believable storyline in place, the author intersperses a fascinating high-level mix of education and entertainment, backing her assertions with copious research and thought-provoking questions told through a nail-biting action-adventure yarn that slowly questions the origins of the avian flu. Was it synthetically produced by a government cabal seeking to manipulate the modern world? A consortium of patriots believe this is true, and they arm themselves against the shadow government.
Yet what if something even more diabolical is occurring? Bodies start turning up that appear to be - for want of a better term - victims of Spontaneous Human Combustion. Has something unknown unleashed upon the world; an invisible influence seeking to conquer, to control, to ultimately change God's creation?
Behind the grotesque ballet of incomprehensible death, a police car's siren wails in sympathy as a pair of red eyes peer out from the netherworld, eagerly watching the raw pain of a crumbling world, and the spirit-creature behind the flaming eyes begins to laugh.
Thus begins The Armageddon Strain, a take-no-prisoners, edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller, filled with thought provoking dialogue about how science might be manipulated by evildoers of both the material and spirit world into concocting a prophetic invitation for end times totalitarianism.
Though a bit preachy in places and lulled with a few too many redundant cafe scenes, there's plenty here to keep the mind in high gear and the nerves on edge as the truly cyclonic novel unfolds.
Excellent Read!.......2005-02-11
Sharon Gilbert weaves a fast-paced story of conspiracy. I enjoyed her attention to detail and her writing style. I will be looking out for her next books. Way to go Sharon!
Book Description
Renowned for the beauty and simplicity of his teachings, Ajahn Chah was Thailand's best-known meditation teacher. His charisma and wisdom influenced many American and European seekers, and helped shape the American Vipassana community. This collection brings together for the first time Ajahn Chah's most powerful teachings, including those on meditation, liberation from suffering, calming the mind, enlightenment and the 'living dhamma'. Most of these talks have previously only been available in limited, private editions, and the publication of Food for the Heart therefore represents a momentous occasion—the hugely increased accessibility of his words and wisdom. Western teachers such as Ram Dass and Jack Kornfield have extolled Chah's teachings for years and now readers can experience them directly in this book.

A Beloved Thai Master.......2004-03-07
Ajahn Chah took it upon himself as a life's mission to make the Buddha Dharma accessible to absolutely anyone, be that a Harvard professor or an uneducated rice farmer ( a life he was very familiar with). For about 25 years, until his death in 1992, he taught and trained nuns and monks on the way of monastic life while delivering countless wonderful teachings to laypersons around the globe. He taught Theravada meditation and applied the teachings thoroughly into his own life; he truly was practicing what he preached. Over a half million people attended his death in Thailand, an amount which says wonders about what kind of an impact he had on that region during his lifetime.
Chah always took great comfort from the Buddha's teachings on facing our suffering, simply to pass right through it with diligent practice. This monumental work successfully gives us all access to the core of Ajahn's teachings which he gave throughout his career in one convenient place which we can go back to again and again. It has 3 sections: Conduct, Virtue, and The World of Senses (which delves into meditation & wisdom).
This text gives virtually endless teachings on how to practice meditation, ethical living, and cultivation of wisdom. And to sum the book up, practice Chah believes to be the absolute core of the Buddha's teachings. While your sure to take away a breadth of helpful knowledge on how and what it means to practice, you'll equally enjoy his simplicity and humor, as well. Enjoy the book!
There has never been a Buddhist book so valuable.......2003-04-09
I read a lot of Buddhist books, and they all have value in one way or another. But never have I read a book that had ALL of the value of the other books between just one set of covers. This is that book.
Ajahn Chah of course was (and through his students still is) a marvelous teacher, with the gifts of humor and directness. Even in translation, you get a full feeling of what it must have been like to listen to this man talk. (Although, as Brahmavamso says, we laypeople get the jewels of sometimes all-night talks. Sorry, Ajahn Brahm!) This book is like having Luang Por speak directly to you, with kindness and toughness at the same time.
I "sipped" a chapter of this book a week, never wanting it to end. I have been reading it for six months now and finally finished it, and I will probably start over from the beginning and do it again. It is not overstating the point to say that this book is a gift to humanity.
Also, and this is less important but still nice, Food for the Heart is a truly handsome book. It's technically paperback, but with jacket tabs and a strong cover. The paper is thick and creamy--sorry if I'm enjoying my senses too much! :) And the typography is very pleasing. It's just a wonderful, wonderful book.
It's like hearing him speak!.......2003-01-03
This collection of talks from Ajahn Chah is well done. His first book, "A Still Forest Pool" was a breath of fresh air. The 'chapters' we short, some just a few sentences long, and were filled with deep teachings. 'Food for the Heart" offers long chapters and the incredibleness that was Ajahn Chah seems to jump off the pages. These talks have been translated from Thai and whoever did the translation did such a great job that often I feel as though I am 'hearing' the teaching instead of reading it.
"If you want to know the Dhamma, where do you look? You must look within the body and the mind. You won't find it on a bookshelf. To really see the Dhamma you have to look within your own body and mind - there are only these two things. The mind is not visible to the physical eye, it must be seen with the "mind's eye." The Dhamma that is in the body must be seen in the body. And with what do we look at the body? We look at the body with the mind. You won't find the Dhamma by looking anywhere else, because both happiness and suffering arise right here. Or maybe you've seen happiness arising in the trees? Or from the rivers, or the weather? Happiness and suffering are feelings that arise in our own bodies and mind." From Food for the Heart - page 336
So direct! This is Ajahn Chah really teaching and encouraging us to practice the Dhamma. His style of teaching truly encourages me to get on the cushion, and also to practice when I'm not on the cushion. There is no 'down time.'
If you are new to Buddhism you might really enjoy his first offering, 'A Still Forest Pool' but if you have some background and are seeking a teacher who can inspire and really point the way to the Buddha's teachings, this is a wonderful book.
I hope you enjoy it!
It's great, but available on line for free.......2003-01-03
According to the introductory material in this book, it was published so that Achaan Chah's teachings would reach a wider audience. Certainly, this is a worthy goal if successful.
Achaan Chah never charged anyone anything for his teachings ... after all the dhamma is priceless. He also worked to preserve the forest around his monestary in Thailand--one of the last forested regions in Thailand.
Everything in this book is available on-line for free too. It's at accesstoinsight dot org under "thai forest tradition", and at abayaghiri dot org under the heading "publications."
However, I recognize that there are still valid reasons for owning a book these days, and if you are part of the wider audience which otherwise would not read these teachings, I heartily recommend this book.
One Source for teaching from the Thai Forest Tradition.......2002-10-02
Having read several of Achaan Chah's books over the years, I'm delighted to have this resource and set of teachings and reflections in one volume.

One of my favorites.......2007-07-16
While this has hundreds of diverse recipes, representing the foods of the regions of the U.S., one of its strengths is in plenty of recipes that can be prepared the night before. Just think, all these innkeepers who have to serve breakfast don't want to be up before dawn cooking and they pass these recipes for excellent breakfast statas casseroles, etc on to us! Nothing like putting a baking dish in the oven in the morning and breakfast is done! This is a huge, tastefully compiled cookbook.
Excellent B&B resource & delicious recipes.......1999-09-06
This huge book is an excellent resource for location a B&B and is packed with over 900 delicious, time-tested recipes. From family favorites to international delights this book as something for everyone.
A vast array of recipes include French toast, pancakes, crepes, eggs, breads, cereals, cookies, cakes, pies, salads, soups, sauces, & beverages. Appetizers, fruits, vegetables, & main dishes are included as well.
Recipes are arranged by state and then by B&B. There is a brief description of each B&B along with contact information and one to four recipes. The index lists recipes both by title & food type making things easy to find.
Some of my favorite recipes include sourdough cinnamon waffles, cheese soda bread & orange fluff beverage. I also enjoyed the green chilies soufflé. My dinner guests loved . chicken casserole & the buttermilk pecan pie.
Good reading & fun to try the recipes of your favorite Inn.........1999-04-21
This book includes both descriptions of the Inns and some of their recipes. Arranged by state, you can turn to your favorite Inn and try one of their recipes. It can be a little difficult to use though if for example your looking for a specific category like pancakes. The pancake recipes are all listed together in the index but you have to switch back and forth a lot to check out the recipes. The recipes range from simple, corkscrew bacon (pg. 344) to different and delicious Danish abelskiver (pg. 361).
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and informative.......2001-08-08
I picked up this book because I see so much of this furniture in antique shops and I wanted to be able to distinguish it from other periods. Although I've never been particularly interested in this period, I found this book to be quite interesting.
The book explains the history of the furniture and its development, with lots of anecdotes along the way. Through the many color photographs, you will learn how to spot specific types of furniture and get a better idea of which company might have manufactured a specific piece.
One of the topics addressed early in the book is the use of veneer. The authors explain that 'veneer' doesn't have to be a dirty word and that even the ancient Egyptians used a form of it. There is a section devoted to the repairing and replacing of veneer. They also provide detailed explanations for such terms as 'burl' and 'pollarding.' They explain the differences between better- and lesser-quality ('borax') furniture, and a pricelist (1999 values) is also included.
Book Description
For most Americans and Europeans, the Bosnian War was played out in the brief, flickering images of television news. But another set of images, more permanent and more profound, played an active role in this war, molding public sentiment and calling attention to the plight of the Bosnian people. For three hellish years, Bosnians plastered the walls of their towns with messages of anger, frustration, desperation, resistance, and hope. These extraordinary images, the focus of this book, are juxtaposed with the hateful, divisive works of propaganda that served the most vicious practitioners of "ethnic cleansing." Evil Doesn't Live Here presents this visual battle to the rest of the world for the first time. Former Bosnian aid workers Daoud Sarhandi and Alina Boboc have gathered over 180 of the most dramatic wartime posters, largely created by Bosnian artists and graphic designers at the height of the war. Fascinating on both political and artistic levels, they provide a harrowing account of the war and put a human face on this seemingly incomprehensible conflict. David Rohde, author of the acclaimed Endgame: The Betrayal and Fall of Srebrenica and winner of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Bosnian War, introduces this vivid and unforgettable collection, which will appeal as much to those interested in current affairs as designers and artists. A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to victims of the Bosnian War.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Pictorial.......2005-06-07
This is still the only book of its kind on the Bosnian War, a pictorial study of the propaganda posters used by all sides.
I agree with the above summary on the text, however. It doesn't do much for the book, and is thankfully spare. The intro is not very useful at all, but the pictures often speak for themselves needing only a few sentences after the basic details (year, etc). Posters range from ad-mocking pleas by artists and civilians while some is pure government PR, some of the cruder pictures evoking earlier 20th century wars. Some are printed in English to reach foreign powers while some are in Roman or Cyrillic to appeal to the homeland. Many are extremely creative and clever, using universal logos and symbols. Subjects for these single-frame calls-to-arm include the slaughter of a people and a plea for attention, the fear of Islam in Europe, the fear of a Croatian-Nazi state, the uselessness of the UN, etc, etc. There's a good cross-section of material as well and brief notes about the differents propaganda machines in each country.
Chilling to look at the posters and think about the carnage done in their name; the more aggression ones are even darker years later.
