Book Description

In spare, honest, and picturesque language, Rick Steber sets this Spur Award-winning novel on the Klamath Indian reservation in 1961 just days before the tribe's "termination" by the U. S. government. Each tribal member received a $43,000 settlement from the government in return for the Klamath's 1-million acre reservation and the end of the Klamath's tribal status. Buy the Chief a Cadillac explores life on the reservation for three brothers—the alcoholism, violence, greed, and madness—brought on by the white man's treatment of the tribe, and each brother's response to the termination settlement. Creek, college-bound and disgusted with reservation life, wants to take his money and run toward success in the white man's world. Chief, who represents the worst of reservation life, plans to spend his money on a new Cadillac and as much booze as he can possibly drink. Pokey, keeper of the Klamath traditions, plans on refusing the government payout and staying on his people's land. The brothers' separate plans send them on course for a deadly collision when the government money finally arrives.

4 out of 5 stars Sad but true picture of Indian life in many former reservations.......2007-08-23

Since I grew up in an area near an Indian reservation in central MN, and now live in an area that was formerly a reservation in central OR, I had to read this book by Rick Steber about his viewpoint. It brings us great sadness to realize how difficult it's been for the American Indian population to assimilate and succeed in our current culture, and why alcohol plays such a great role in their attempts. I did enjoy reading 1491 which documents their predecessors' success in living a better life as the early natives to this continent. I'm glad to hear we're beginning to see the necessity for restoring the prairie grasses and conservation practices of burning, etc. that were successful for the early forestation and conservation of our country.

5 out of 5 stars Good native saga.......2007-08-05

As I lived close to this area during the time of this book, it was thrilling to read Rick Steber's view of the happenings at that time.

It supposedly is not based on facts. I remember too well the incidents and the stories of the law enforcement officers relating to the "trouble with the natives". Humourous as it was at the time, it is truly a sad tale of loss of another one of our native American tribes and the plight the white man has brought to them.

5 out of 5 stars a great read.......2006-09-03

The characters in this book are drawn deeply and realistically. I could not put this book down.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Historical Novel.......2005-06-28

Buy the Chief a Cadillac is indeed a wonderful historical novel, although fairly recent history, as the time period of the book is in the early 1960's.
The Klamath Indian tribe, living on a million acre reservation in southern Oregon, is about to be terminated. The government passed a plan where they would pay each Indian $43,000 and in return, the reservation would be no longer. This novel is set in the days just before and immediately after the Termination Act took place.
Full of well fleshed out characters, mean drunks, crazy cowboys, whisky swilling loggers, lawmen both good and bad, this book is a darn fine read. It is historically correct and explores clearly one of the last really big rip-offs of the Indians by the US Government.
Buy the Chief a Cadillac is fueled by 60's rock and roll, a river of potent booze, hopped up hotrods, guns, chaos, greed, murder and abundant mayhem. We meet and journey with each of the many and varied interesting characters from their own point of view, something that works very well.
The book is tight, keeps the reader turning the pages; the writing is crisp, clean, and clear, and has a definite ring of authenticity about it. This is the first of Rick Steber's books I've read and I plan to read more of them. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading about the West, for those interested in American history, and think it would make an excellent book for professors to have their students read in classes that deal with the American Indian, the reservations, the 1960's. A terrific book by a talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing Frisco Joe.......2004-06-01

Jefferson Ranch is home to the dozen Jefferson brothers, all hunky and single. Mason is the oldest of the brothers and in charge of the Ranch, which is also know as "Malfunction Junction". When Mason's best friend Mimi suggests he hire a housekeeper, the idea doesn't sound so bad.

Frisco Joe Jefferson is angry with Mason for going along with Mimi's crazy housekeeper idea. And he can't believe it when a bus pulls up with twenty women all wanting to apply for the job. But, what Frisco really couldn't believe is that one of the applicants brought her newborn baby with her!

Annabelle Turnberry wasn't really interested in the housekeeper position. In fact, was just seeking some piece and quiet after finding out that her daughter's father wasn't interested in having them around. Annabelle just went along to the ranch with some friends as a make shift vacation. However, Annabelle got more than she bargained for when she met Frisco and he soothed and calmed her daughter, Emmie, down from a cranky colic spell... Before you know it, Emmie sleeps happily in Frisco's arms.

All the brothers can see that Annabelle and Emmie are the perfect match for Frisco Joe, but will they see it too?

There are 12 books in this series, so we'll be reading about the hunky Jefferson brothers for awhile. If Frisco Joe's Fiancee is any indication of the following 11 stories, then I, for one, can't wait to read them all!

This Harlequin American Romance novel rates five stars!

    4 out of 5 stars I was in stitches.......2003-07-24

Tina Leonard caught my attention with Cowboy Cootchie-Coo. Then over the course of the next year she managed to steal my heart with books like Daddyýs Little Darlings and A Match Made In Texas. So it came as no surprise to me to find out that Ms. Leonard had created another powerful story abounding with humor, emotion and romance with Frisco Joeýs Fiancée, the first of her spectacular new series Cowboys By The Dozen.

Itýs round up time at the Jefferson Ranch, and thereýs a stampeding herd headed their way ý a herd of single women that is. Because unbeknownst to the Jefferson brothers someone has decided that this time theyýre the ones who are going to be rounded up and branded by wedding rings.

After all these years Mason Jefferson should know better than to put his trust in Mimi Cannadyýs goofy ideas, even if she is his best friend. Yet for some reason, even knowing her ideas can only lead to trouble, Mason just canýt seem to find it in his heart to say no to her. Only this time, he should have, because once his eleven younger brothers get a hold of him heýs going to wish he did.

Frisco Joe Jefferson is ready to scream. Not only did Mimi manage to once again convince Mason to go along with her hair-brained idea to hire a housekeeper without consulting the rest of them, but when twenty female applicants showed up to apply for the job in the middle of a blizzard, he was the one left holding the bag. A diaper bag, because one of the applicants actually showed up with her newborn baby in tow.

Annabelle Turnberry knew coming to Union Junction wasnýt the best idea sheýd ever come up with, but when the other ladies from the Lonely Hearts Salon invited her along for a mini vacation while they applied for a housekeeping job she couldnýt say no. After all, now that her babyýs father wanted nothing to do with her or their angelic daughter she needed to get away from men and figure out what she was going to do with her life.

One look around the Jefferson Ranch, better known as Malfunction Junction, and Annabelle realized she had come to the wrong place if she thought she was going to be able to forget about men, and not because of the twelve single and oh so hunky brothers who owned the place either. Nope, it was all because of one brother in particular, Frisco! In a few short minutes he managed to do the impossible and steal past her defenses when he tenderly soothed her cranky baby.

Frisco Joeýs little brothers canýt believe it. One minute die hard bachelor Frisco Joeýs telling all the women to get packing and the next minute heýs letting Annabelle sleep in his bed, while baby Emmie contentedly sleeps in his arms.

From the look that lights Frisco Joeýs face every time he looks at Annabelle and Emmie these brothers have put two and two together and come up with the perfect little family of three. If only they can get him to open his eyes and realize what heýs found before itýs too late.

From the moment that busload of women arrived at ýMalfunction Junctioný I was in stitches. I couldnýt help it. From the entertaining characters to the snappy dialogue to the humorous storyline all the way down the line to the heartwarming way that Emmie wrapped Frisco Joe around her little finger, Ms. Leonard effortlessly caught hold of my heart and imagination and never let go.

Annabelle and Emmie were perfect for Frisco Joe. They completed him in a way that no other woman could have, something that Ms. Leonard seemed to have intuitively known when she was writing this story. I honestly donýt think any one else could have brought him so vividly to life the way that they did. I also donýt think that anyone could have helped Annabelle and Emmie to heal the way that Frisco did.

Well written, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable, Frisco Joeýs Fiancée is another high quality comedic romance perfect for an evening of fun and relaxation from the pen of one of the most talented authors I know.

And the best part is, there are twelve Jeffersonýs, and this is just the beginning. Ms. Leonard has a gift, for which I will be eternally grateful, that she so willingly shares with her readers.

4 out of 5 stars good kick off to new series.......2003-07-21

The Jefferson Ranch in Union Junction, Texas, better know to locals as Malfunction Junction, is home to the twelve Jefferson brothers. Neighbor Mimi Cannady convinces the oldest brother Mason that they need a housekeeper to help out. Together they send an e-mail to a friend of Mimi's who runs an employment agency looking for an `older' housekeeper (one that Mimi doesn't have to worry about Mason falling in love with). When something goes wrong with the transmission, the ladies at financially strapped Lonely Hearts Beauty Salon see the add and decide to all travel to the ranch to see if one of them can win the job. When the twenty ladies arrive at the ranch, Mason, the only brother that knew about the housekeeper search, is gone so it falls on second in command, Frisco, to get rid of the ladies. After the brother truck the ladies back to the bus station Frisco heads up to bed only to discover that one of the ladies, Annabelle Turnberry, and her two month old baby, Emmie, asleep in his bed. Emmie is a colicky baby but the minute Frisco picks her up, she calms down and sleeps. It's not long before rough, gruff Frisco is eating right out of little Emmie's hand. Then Frisco breaks his leg and Annabelle nurses him.

This is a great first book in the series. The other brothers were developed enough to make you anxious to read their stories but the main focus stayed on Frisco and Annabelle

5 out of 5 stars Excellant start to mini series.......2003-07-12

Whoopee!! What a kick-off to this series. Tina has again tugged your heart strings with this page turning story of Frisco Joe Jefferson. And to think this is just the beginning - we still have eleven more heart throbs and macho brothers to come. This is a book for everyone, it has the hunky rough and tough cowboy who has not intentions of getting into the matchmaking trap, but who meets his demise at the hands of the single mom Annabelle Turnberry and her baby girl. Now as things are heating up bring on the next brother - Laredo. Way to go Tina!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Holy hormones!.......2003-07-05

Holy hormones! Testosterone's in the air in Tina Leonard's delightful new mini-series, Cowboys By the Dozen. Imagine twelve rough and ready unattached brothers with hearts as big as the state of Texas desperately in need of a whole lot of loving! Be prepared to laugh at loud and to have your heart strings tugged by the Jefferson brothers as each finally meets their match. Ms. Leonard makes you laugh out loud and as the pages fly by. Frisco Joe's a wonderful hero who'll melt your heart and make you sigh as he handles baby Emmie and her mother. Especially intriguing are the ladies at the Lonely Hearts Beauty Salon and how they'll fare as Delilah battles her sister's rival Never Lonely Cut n' Gurls. And, will Mason and Mimi ever connect? This is a series to watch for as each new book hits the shelves! O, happy days, Laredo's story's up next month!~~Debora Hosey, reviewer, Romance Reader's Connection

Doctor Octopus raids a factory and gives the people there quite a scare.

Both Spidey and Venom end up on the trail of some serious arms dealing, via talking to some Russian nogoodniks.

Serious, as in mini nuclear weapons. Doc Ock decides he wants to go nuclear on some people for their own good.

No-one with Spider super powers thinks this should be allowed.

I enjoyed this book because the story was extremely well written, and the imagery elements make you feel as though you're in the book. And with the addition of venom, the book gets a 4 out of 5!

      2 out of 5 stars imbalance.......2000-06-11

I had high hopes for this book, which I picked up secondhand. After all, Diane Duane has written some pretty good stuff over the years, and Spider-Man is a great character. Too, the different medium--the novel--generally makes for an interestingly altered version of the character than one usually finds in the comics.

However, while the characterization in this novel was interesting--and, as always, Duane's prose is pretty smooth--there is a definite imbalance between many long, dry expository sections and the very few, halfheartedly-realized action sequences they lead up to. Yes, this is a novel, not a comic book. Yes, a novel cannot feature the non-stop slam-bang stuff that marks so many comics. But holy smokes, folks, this read is nearly tedious.

The book, in short, is a bit less than satisfying as an action tale, and about adequately satisfying as a novel of intrigue. As a super-hero novel, it barely ranks. It's not a *bad* tale, as such, it's just not nearly as good as it could or should be. My advice? Skip this one, and go find an old copy of Len Wein and Marv Wolfman's _Spider-Man: Mayhem in Manhattan._

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......1999-08-16

This is possibly MY second favourite book in the trilogy (Venom Factor being the first fav). There are a TON of things I like about this book, making me want to read it over and over again. Especially when Spidey discover's one HUGE mistake that Ock made (Hey, what makes you think I'm gonna say it for those who haven't read it yet?) and foil Ock's umpteenth ruthless plan from making the Earth a living nightmare. And where's a good book without the symbiote Venom causing havoc, yet giving Spidey a helping hand in defeating Ock? Nowhere else but here.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Story.......1998-12-12

What I've liked about Diane Duane's approach to writing Spider-Man in these novels is that she stays so faithful to how Spidey was created by Stan Lee. A Down to Earth hero with problems that everyone can relate with! I liked the cell-phone mystery that Diane wrote in this story,of Venom and Spider-Man teaming up to stop Dr. Octopus from blowing up New York, and how Mary Jane is given a lot of attention in the novel. Helping make the money ends meet while her husband is off saving the city. In a way this marked the end of the first round of Spider-Man novels begun in 1994 and it was a good way to end it.

I love this book. If you're looking for a cookbook - this isn't it. But if you're looking for a peek into what a day in the life in the Ivy (or any other high-end restaurant) is like, then you'll be pleased. Pick it up and just read a page or two about the lunch hour or sit down and read it from cover to cover. Either way, you'll like this book. It provided me with a great insight into the usually never-seen kitchen and backrooms. I highly recommend it.

This book is a real and living illustration as to why newspaper columnists should perhaps think twice before attempting a venture into the real world of books .Gill writes to a formula ,if you've read one of his columns you've read them all. Self obsessed, thin and boring this book would have best remained on the shelves.Having knocked out two dismal and embarrassing novels ,he has obviously decided to try and redeem himself with this dreadful mishmash ,but sadly ,I think he needn't have bothered.

This is a fine little book and excellent value for the price. The text is readable and informative, and there are ample illustrations, albeit in black and white. The section on hallmarks alone should save the collector some expensive missteps.

This book contains a brief jewelry history form 1840 forward that is more accessible and useful than the more extensive coverage in other, historically focused books.

Includes illustrations and pricing (as of publication date, of course) for an astonishing range of antique and contemporary jewelry. A worthy reference for the collector and a book of interest to the jewelry maker or designer. If only the photos were in color, but that is perhaps too much to ask of a book in this price range and of this compact size. The size does make it something that you can easily slip into your bag for visits to the auction houses and antiques dealers.

Traditionally, all this was done by hand. This volume translates the crazy-quilting process to the modern sewing machine, preserving the enchanting quirkiness while....

Pictures are great and info is good too. My main complaint is the the book and index is arranged alphabetical by botanical name and not common name. There is no common name index or cross reference either. It does give common names on the individual pages, so you might find what you are looking for by browsing the 411 pages. I fail to see how this is homowner freindly unless you are a homeowner that happens to have have a degree in hortoculture.

4 out of 5 stars A useful way to meet the Florida natives........2005-10-11

As an Northern imigrant gardener to the South Florida eco-system I have found Nelson's "Florida's Best Native Landscape Plants" a useful place to meet and get to know the Florida Natives for the following reasons.
                    1. He has narrowed the list to 200 of the most useful plants in Landscaping.
                    2. It is a reference book rather than a text book--using a useful format to describe each plant. The inclusion of a category for companion plants is very helpful in getting the right plant in the right place.
                    3. He presents a useful summary of the wisdom of using native plants--A point that seems so obvious to me but most imigrant gardeners and almost all plant suppliers and nursuries resist.
                    4. The layout of devoting 2 facing pages to each plant and including a close up view, a mid-range view and a full plant photo along with very well done illustrations is unique and very helpful.
What would I have liked that isn't there?
                    1. Foremost the biggest shortcoming is not providing a common name index. I support his decision to arrange by botanical name, and to include common name--but in this day of easily assembled indexing I find it a major shortcoming not to have included the common name index. The result is I need another book to find many of the plants--It is a combersome way to meet the natives--usually introduced by common or nick names. Apart from this shortcoming I would rate it a shiny five star.
                    Less significantly:
                    2. Most of the pictures appear to be taken in a non-homescape or landscape setting and many are not of professional quality
                    2. The format did not include or really allow space for more information on how to care for and use the plant.
I find it a useful but insufficient guide to "meeting the Florida natives."

Here is a horticultural treasure trove of choices, providing technical details on the design, maintenance, and use of a wide range of readily available native plants. The notes on companion plants are especially valuable.
