Book Description
Maybe he would not have gone through it if he had it to do all over again. It sounded funny saying to do it all over again when it was only about a year. Yet, this year was truly the loneliest time in his life. In the past, there was someone special who could take away the burn that would begin to churn in his heart. But not this year. This was one that had only dry tear ducts that ached in a closed cake. Through the thoughts and dreams of Frank Thomas, Conflicting Sanity offers a vicarious medium for soul-searching. From the simplicity of childhood to a vortex of strained emotion, Frank unwittingly immerses himself into emotional isolation as an adult. His adolescence seems idyllic-spending hours at a time at the beach with his Aunt Blanch. But you can't stay young forever. Frank must deal with the stress of his father's death, his training as an independent psychotherapist, and his young nephew's life-threatening illness. He also struggles with interpersonal relationships and observes that a lack of passion has been adopted by the masses. He is ultimately consumed with questioning who is sane and what makes for a functional philosophy on how to lead his life.

hypnotic, introspective novel.......2006-03-02
this was a great book --- thru his main character, the author unfolds a deeply personal story in a direct, very literal fashion -- the author includes the height of the characters he is introducing, for example. however, the overall feeling of the novel is almost otherwordly, strongly conveying the main character's sadness and alienation. i'm guessing the author had a story he wanted to get outside of himself and onto the pages of a book. now that he's cleared himself of that, i look forward to a second work with a more objective focus and story line.
Look Inside Yourself.......2006-02-20
John Toker is a tutor for writing and math with a specialty in helping learning disabled students. He is also a psychotherapist interested in discovering the spirituality in healing. His first novel, Conflicting Sanity, is based on experiences from his practice and situations which real patients endured. Through the thoughts, dreams, and actions of his protaganist, Frank Thomas, the reader vicariously soul searches for his own sanity. John offers insightful advice on having friends and family support with all medical situations and encourages the use of drawing and art as a way of understanding our deepest self. This is a very interesting look through the keyhole of our medical system and the people who inhabit the halls. The book makes you think and gives you a deeper understanding of our psyche.

A Look on the Dark Side.......2006-02-08
This book validates the dictum that one should write about what one knows best. This dark psychological novel amply reflects the author's familiarity with the field of psychotherapy, and could almost serve as a technical treatise on psychotherapy and some of the debates in the field. In fact, one might question the author's decision to make the book a work of fiction, since I would rate it more highly as a technical treatise than as a literary work. However that may be, this is a deep and sensitive look into the mental states of both the protagonist, Frank Thomas, and his patients.
Conflicting Sanity.......2006-02-03
Let me start by saying this is the first book I've read cover to cover in many years! I found the writing to be very inviting in the sense that I found myself caught up in the emotional rollercoast ride that Mr. Toker takes us as readers through with his characters; especially Frank Thomas. The details really paint a clear picture of what it must be like to work in the medical field. It was a triumphant ride as Mr. Toker takes his main character Frank Thomas from challenge to challenge and finally to a small glispe of enlightenment. A triumphant ride for Mr. Toker, Frank Thomas and we the readers! A wonderful read hard to put down.

Another hot story in the Delaney saga! Fabulous!.......1999-04-03
Simply irrisistable! Full of strong characters and steamy sex. Sparks fly! Prince Nicholas Savron believes Dominic Delaney was responsible for his cousin's death. He then kidnaps half-breed Silver Delaney from her private girls' school to pry his whereabouts from her. Silver has always been a wild hellion whose loyalty is given only to a select few. All her life she's really belonged nowhere and she uses her savage boldness to hide her tender heart. Once she tells Nicky the truth, he still keeps her captive on his riverboat because he wants her to belong to him only. He believes she's the mythical Russian firebird and they'd soar together in flaming brilliance. Brilliant!

A good effort.......2003-07-07
Quite often, publishers of media tie-in books and producers of media product, want to make sure they market their product as quickly as possible, which is why early efforts in successful and not successful media tie-in novels are not up to par. This is the case with Leather Wings. The story on the whole is interesting, albeit a little thin, but where the novel fails is in the capturing of the characters' personalities. A media tie-in novel is most successful when you can visualize your favorite character speaking and behaving in the way described in the novel. This is not the case with this work as the characters' dominent trait is brought out and then the reader is beaten over the head with it. In the series, Devon Adair is determined to get to New Pacifica, but she is not blinded to what is happening around her. In this book, she is very blinded and I find it hard to beleive why anyone would follow her. The author admits the show wasn't even on the air at the time he wrote it, and I give him credit for trying, but it would be nice if these series waited a while before engaging in media tie-ins.
I miss Earth 2.......2000-06-14
I really liked the TV show and sorely miss it. I am therefore ever grateful to the few authors who have written anything on the show, hence the extra star. It is only really a 2 star book, Vornholt has done better before and worse! Out of all the Earth 2 books out there, I personally prefer the Sean Dalton novel Puzzle because he has the characters right. Earth 2 : Leather Wings by Vornholt is an okay book. The colonists arrive at an enormous canyon which stretches as far as the eye can see in either direction. Way down below a river rages. Somehow they must find a way across.

A Deluxe republication of the First Edition of 1929 published by Small-Arms Technical Publishing Co,
Book Description
In a masterful evocation of Italian Harlem and the men and women who lived there, Robert Orsi examines how the annual festa of the Madonna of 115th Street both influenced and reflected the lives of the celebrants. His prize-winning book offers a new perspective on lived religion, the place of religion in the everyday lives of men, women, and children, the experiences of immigration and community formation, and American Catholicism. This edition includes a new introduction by the author that outlines both the changes that Italian Harlem has undergone in recent years and significant shifts in the field of religious history. Awarded the Alpha Sigma Nu National Book Prize (sponsored by Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States) for outstanding book in the humanities. Winner of the 1986 American Catholic Historical Association's John Gilmary Shea Prize.
Customer Reviews:
THE THEOLOGY OF THE STREETS.......2003-11-15
Robert Orsi's Madonna of 115th Street is a brilliant multi-dimensional research on the meaning of "popular religion" in the Italian community of Harlem in New York. However, to be just, Orsi himself is rather cautious about labeling his study by the term "popular". It is "religion in the streets," Orsi says, that is in the center of his examination: "This study began in a sense of the limitations of the meaning of popular religion and a desire to broaden and deepen our understanding of this phenomenon" (Orsi, 1985:xiv). Robert Orsi raises pertinent and engaging questions regarding the melding of ethnicity, religion, and community values which have implications beyond the scope of the present work.
The study of Italian American religion begins with the people themselves as a story of suffering, conflict, and hope intimately related to Mary. The men and women of Italian Harlem, the Sicilian refugees brought to the United States along with their modest material goods their incredibly rich religiosity and devotion to the Marian cult. The latter, unlike in the case of Polish Catholics (Orsi, 1985:xvi), was hardly controlled by the Church structures. This unique feature of the Southern Italian Catholicism defined people's religion as the totality of their ultimate values, their most deeply held ethical convictions, their efforts to order their reality, their cosmology: "This also could be called their "ground of being", but only if this is understood in a very concrete, social-historical way, not as reality beyond their lives, but as the reason that, consciously and unconsciously, structured and was expressed in their actions and reflections" (Orsi, 1985:xvii). Orsi's analysis resembles Durkheim's research on The Elementary Forms of Religious Life who believes that religion is "a fundamental and permanent aspect of humanity". The reality of religious forces is to be found in the real experience of social life, according to Durkheim (Durkheim, 1995:36). Interestingly enough, in the same way as Durkheim finds the birth of that idea in rites, as moments of collective effervescence, Orsi finds the annual festa of the Madonna of Mount Carmel in the 115th Street in the heart of the socio-religious dynamics of the Italian Harlem.
Symbol, ritual, and myth - the entire experience of Mount Carmel emerged from and referred back to the people's lives; the men and women of Italian Harlem shared and found themselves in the destiny of symbolic meanings when they attended the festa of the Madonna of 115th Street. In turn, their experience of the Madonna shaped their American destiny.
The Madonna: A Vivid and Complex Examination of the Festival.......2003-07-04
In this lucid and eloquently written book, Orsi places the Madonna of 115th Street into the full context of the Italian Harlem community. I found the most interesting part of this extrememly insightful book to be Orsi's examination of the Italian-American domus, and how the complexities of the domus are played out in the festival itself. The book is a brilliant examination of the role of women in Italian Harlem; Orsi shows how the Madonna embodies both the power and restrictions of Italian-American women in this time. Orsi also effectively demonstrates how the Italian immigrants, with their annual festival, carved out an identity "niche" for themselves, apart from but no less legitimate than other immigrant groups and other, more church-oriented forms of Catholicism. For the Italian immigrants, the festival provided both an essential link to Italy and a way to define their particular community. This book is easily accessible to scholars, students, and the general public, and includes many interviews so the reader gets a vivid sense of the period and the people of Italian Harlem. Highly recommended.
Best Depiction of Italian-American Life I Have Ever Read!!.......2002-08-01
Great book! Covers not only the Catholicism of Italian Americans, but also a great deal about their home and family lives. Neither PC nor arrogant, this book depicts the Italian American world better than anything I have read! I kept nodding in agreement and underlining passages while reading. Forget the movie stereotypes and sentimental recollections; this is the real thing. It helped me understand my own culture a great deal.
The only letdown was the part about a "Theology of the Streets." That section struck me as a tad unrealistic.
How religion plays out in the everyday lives and experiences.......2002-05-06
In The Madonna Of 115th Street, Robert A. Orsi (Charles Warren Professor of American Religious History, Harvard University) offers a seminal and ground breaking study of faith and community in New York City's Italian Harlem. The focus of this treatise is the annual Catholic festival called "Madonna of 115th Street" and how it has both influenced and reflects the lives of the men and women of the neighborhood. The Madonna Of 115th Street reveals a compelling perspective on how religion plays out in the everyday lives and experiences of American Catholics and the formation of a distinctive immigrant community. This Yale "Nota Bene" paperback edition is highly recommended reading and enhanced with a new introduction by Orsi outlining the changes that Italian Harlem has undergone in recent years and the significant shifts that have occurred in the field of American religious history.
Reflective and penetrating.......2002-01-21
This book helped me think in new ways about the place of tradition and authority in the contemporary world. Orsi's reconstruction of the mental and social schemata of the Italian community in East Harlem is a fascinating, compelling story. His research is impressive and his interpretation persuasive. Three cheers for Orsi's "theology of the streets."

Excellent.......2005-12-26
Ten years on and I still think this is the best when it comes to running nutrition and diets. The energy bars beat any Powerbar in my book, and the energy drinks and simple and useful. I use it from time to time to re-evaluate my diet based on how much I'm running. Love to see it updated!
Easy cooking for busy people!.......1999-10-03
Nancy Clark has become one of my favorite nutrition authors. This book is easy to read with basic nutrition advice in the first section. The second section consists of nutrition enhancing, simple to follow recipes that do not require much time or fancy ingredients. I tried many different banana bread recipes from different cookbooks and found the one in this book not only the easiest, but also the best tasting. When I can't decide what to eat I pull out this book and always find some inspiration.

Hall China Tea and Coffee Pots: The First 100 Years.......2007-01-11
Very extensive collection of pots. There were several I have never seen before in any other publication.
Could be organized in a more user friendly manner, but would still reccomend the book to any Hall collector.
Must have book.......2005-03-19
Yesterday I received this beautiful book on Tea and Coffee Pots that have been produced by the Hall China Company. If you collect Tea and/or Coffee Pots this is a must have book. It has all the Tea and Coffee Pots that the Hall China Company produced from 1903 to today. The just released book by Gary and Paula Barnebey has over 800 color photos in this 240-page book. This is a well written and researched book has an extensive bibliography. The book contains Tables with general color lines produced through the years and availability over time, a color
chart, and much, much more.
Customer Reviews:
Vague and hard to follow.......2007-06-06
This book is outdated and the instructions for recreating patterns are vague. The book has limited pictures, though very skillful fashion drawings. This book would better be used a supplement to another, more technical book.
Cheaper and more satisfying than buying patterns that don't fit!.......2006-07-14
I bought this book when it was new and have used Bensussen's method successfully for many years. The point of making a pattern this way is to preserve/reproduce the style and cut (fit) of a particular garment, rather than attempting to alter a commercial pattern to fit the way something you already own already fits. If you lack confidence in your drafting ability, Bensussen advises checking sleeve caps and armholes against commercial patterns, but this is redundant: The accuracy of your pattern can be checked by pinning your traced seam lines onto the seam lines of the original garment and adjusting as necessary. Or you could just learn how to draft a sleeve :)
Lack of precision.......2005-03-16
While I applaud the author's creativity in showing lots of variations on a basic pattern (the sloper or block), I have lots of concerns about the accuracy of the final pattern using this method. She doesn't account for deformation and merely "tracing" the item doesn't give a decent pattern. Her recommendation for correcting errors is to compare them to a commercial pattern (which seems to defeat the purpose here).
I'm afraid the reader will spend far more time correcting the pattern than just going out and buying a commercial pattern and adjusting it to the style of their existing clothes.
I recommend Patterns from Finished Clothes: Re-Creating the Clothes You Love by Tracy Doyle for a more precise technique.
Great but time consuming.......2000-06-02
I ordered this book because I have some favourite clothes that I would love to reproduce, I'm sure we all do :-). The author was very clear in her instructions and the diagrams and pictures were good and easy to follow. Unfortunately the process is very time consuming, and after the reading the book I doubt I will put these techniques into practice.
However it's a great book to get if you just can't part with that favourite outfit, and are willing to spend the time to reproduce it.

Customer Reviews:
Lively and beautiful.......2000-09-09
This great book shows in text and photographs the various and beautiful ways that African artifacts: traditional fabrics, sculpture, paintings and drawings, popular and ubiquitous souvenir items and - most importantly - African-inspired motifs and designs, can be incorporated into (or the inspiration for) sophisticated contemporary room decor.
The authors have worked for the international design company Ikea, so their slant is design, rather than anthropology. They come at it in an energetic and engaging way. The result is a source book that is a visual treat, and a great home tour. The rooms - living, bed, kitchens (in which W. African design elements are adapted to ceramic tiles, with gorgeous results) and more - are lively, smart, and modern.
You notice in reading the text, and drooling over the abundant photos of the beautiful and stimulating rooms, that well-known European textile designers of the sixties (the Finnish company Marimekko, for example) owe a debt of gratitude to indigeneous African cloth designers. This is something I hadn't ever realized.
A lovely, inspirational, and worthwhile book.
Great continent, great ideas!.......2000-08-17
I have lived, worked and travelled extensively in West Africa since the early 1970's and this is the first comprehensive book which assisted me in incorporating my beautiful art and artifacts into a living design for my home. I loved all the gorgeous pictures and the practical tips. The variety of design styles was also a welcome reminder of the diversity of Africa. I can't wait to read the next book by Sharne Algotsson. I only wish there was a magazine devoted to this subject as well.
The Spirit of African Design can be a part of your home!.......1999-12-31
I have traveled to West Africa and the Caribbean. This book helped me incorporate the artwork and artifacts I brought back from my trips into my day-to-day design. The things I have are no longer just "souvenirs," but are now part of an overall look and feel of my home. Now, when I travel, I have an eye for what I can do with my "stuff" when I get it home!
The authors and photographers have done a wonderful job.
A MUST HAVE ITEM!!!!!!!.......1998-10-09
I just happened to be walking in my local mall and got a glimpse of the cover and was sold from then on. I am probably driving my family crazy but I am now inspired to redecorate my kitchen to resemble an african market. Thanks!!!!!!
Very good book would have liked more Info........1998-07-17
It was a good book and I saw a lot of Ideas that I plan to use, but there were times that I thought they could have given more information about the masks, vases and other artifacts. Things like what the historical use was and where they came from But all in all I enjoyed it.

It's a great book!.......2000-09-08
I already knew enough about 3D Studio as to make my own models. I wanted to know more, and I found this book. I think it's great, even for someone like me that already used 3D Studio a lot. It was also between the cheapest ones, so I didn't doubt when I bought it. Really nice, it does a deep coverage of each command, and I prefer Spanish (my original language) to English any day.
don't even try it.......2000-08-31
well, to any of those who already have read any good max book, can realize of the poor kind of information that is in this one. I agree there's no many good books of 3d animation in spanish, and those from anaya multimedia are also very bad books, but, well.. I could tell learn some english and have some good books like the inside series from new riders.

Book Description
During the horror and conflict of World War II, a fictional radio character named Captain Midnight stormed his way into the consciousness of American radio listeners. Captain Midnight (a.k.a. Charles J. Albright) was a vigorous, mature figure whom listeners could easily perceive defending their United States. The scripts, well written and expertly plotted, had a wide appealfrom excited children and their Secret Squadron Code-O-Graphs to U.S. Army Air Corps flight crews. But to fans (then and now) of the original 15-minute serial adventures, the "real" Captain Midnight retired when the show went to 30 minutes, replaced actor Ed Prentiss, and simplified the writing and plotting.
Using facts, details and events from those original early radio scripts of Captain Midnight, the author has constructed a "biography" of the great wartime aviation hero, covering his origins and adventures. Concluding the work are thorough appendices that discuss Secret Squadron equipment, aircraft and rocketry; cryptology and code-cracking in the series; and Captain Midnight's portrayal in various media (books, radio, television, serials, comics and newspaper strips).

A valuable history of 1940s Americana.......2007-10-07
With this groundbreaking book, author Stephen A. Kallis, Jr. has rescued a chunk of American radio history from oblivion. And it's a prominent chunk of 1940s American radio culture, with the Ovaltine-sponsored Captain Midnight series broadcast 5 days a week in the late afternoons from 1940-1949. It was a popular program with American households of the era.
Author Kallis was privileged to gain rare access to radio scripts in Ovaltine's archives. This rarity of access allowed him to summarize material for his book. But whenever comprehensive source documentation and/or broadcast recordings are not available to the general public, there are also significant risks regarding historical accuracy. The public has no choice but to rely on a researcher who has had access, or claimed to have had access, to source information before the age of home recordings from the media. There are no checks and balances concerning reliability and authenticity of what such a researcher or author presents.
In response to my inquiries and challenges, Stephen Kallis rightly acknowledged the "real" names of Captain Midnight, broadcast under Skelly Oil and Ovaltine sponsorship (namely James/Jim, "Red," and Albright), are the actual names of history. He also rightly admitted his added and substituted first name of "Charles" for the Captain is a complete fiction, solely of Kallis' own imagination and making.
So the author has acknowledged, as far as he knows, the Captain's real or birth name was James Albright, with the nick-name "Red." He privately went on to explain (not in the book) that so far as he knows, the name "Jim" or "James" originated in the Captain Midnight TV show of 1954-1956, and Kallis found no birth first name mentioned in the radio scripts he examined.
So Kallis therefore apparently felt the Captain's "true" first name was up for grabs; and yet he published a simple "J." as a middle initial in his book (in the photo caption on page 8), and without explaining what the "J" stood for. Confusing? Yes. Better to have left it as James "Red" Albright; and especially because Kallis' research at the Ovaltine archives took place over only a few days, and was likely far from exhaustive. But no one apart from Mr. Kallis can tell, because he appears to be the only one to have summarized what's in Ovaltine's script archives.
Since the book does not mention the purported first name "Charles" is the author's complete fabrication, even by footnote or in an appendix, questions arise about whatever else might have been made up that was not part of the program's history, and that the author has not identified as his own speculations.
To Kallis' credit, he does frequently identify where his telling differs from what was radio scripted or broadcast, and he explains why; and I almost always like how he resolves some inconsistencies or inaccurate facts, in even the presumably original broadcast material, regarding things of the era. And that can be acceptable, so long as he says where and how he departs.
But since one significant distortion has been exposed, with its fabrication heretofore undisclosed, there may be reason to suspect there can be others that no one but Mr. Kallis knows about, because the Ovaltine archives have not been opened to the general public. I therefore urge the author in an anticipated sequel book, "Radio's Captain Midnight - The Postwar Biography," to footnote and appropriately annotate his work with explanations whenever he departs from original scripts and broadcasts. Perhaps he might also point out previously undisclosed changes that appeared in the present book, if indeed he had made any more such unidentified changes.
Of course, the best of all possibilities would be if existing Ovaltine scripts and/or broadcast recordings could be publicly released, but don't hold your breath. What Kallis has done, and hopefully will continue to do, may well be the best posterity will ever get.
Captain Midnight.......2000-03-31
What a treasure trove for Old Time Radio buffs and especially fans of the Captain Midnight radio show! There are so few episodes of the program that have survived on tape, that most of what we remember is from our faulty memories. Steven Kallis fixes that problem in a jiffy with a detailed and full review of the adventures faced by Captain Midnight and his Secret Squadron during the period of WWII, based on the scripts of the show that he was able to review from the original Ovaltine files. He writes in such a fashion, however, that the character comes alive and seems as real as have Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan.
The radio program was one of those that offered a number of premiums to the listener, particularly a variety of secret decoding devices and manuals. Kallis incorporates these items into his biography as logical and important tools used by the Secret Squadron in its pursuit of some really colorful villains.
Let's have another volume that covers the post war years! Soon!
Kallis breathes life into a fictional character.......2000-03-27
While World War II had many real-life heroes, during the war years there were many fictional characters portrayed with a similar status. One such fictional character was Captain Midnight.
Many baby boomers know this character from television. But before TV and especially during WW II, radio was a major medium and Captain Midnight had his beginnings here. Beginning as a child-oriented radio program in the late 30's, Captain Midnight, aka Charles Albright, was heard as another "white-hat" hero fighting evil injustice throughout the world. As American involvement in WW II increased, so too did the radio series finding Captain Midnight fighting both Nazi and Japanese soldiers and spies.
Though fictional, Stephen Kallis Jr. has written a "biography" in the best traditions of Sherlock Holmes and others by fleshing out the man known as Captain Midnight. The book details the early beginnings of the myth, how Captain Midnight joined with his ward Chuck Ramasy, and the genesis of the Secret Squadron.
What I found fascinating about the book was how much the fictional character took on the aura of reality. Kallis, though he follows the radio series plots, provides a lot of detail of the events that Captain Midnight and the Secret Squadron found themselves involved. For fans of the radio series (and even the television series), the book has exciting elements as Midnight battles the Nazi and Japanese forces.
One of my favorite parts is where Midnight has been captured by the Japanese and is soon to be killed, but through skill and some luck is able to escape.
The author, a pilot himself, provides lots of details about the planes of the period. He also brings a lot of knowledge about decoders and cryptology - something that played a very important role in the Captain Midnight saga.
If you love planes, cryptography, or even the radio series, this book will prove a fascinating read.
