Book Description

At forty-one, Juanita Lewis is running away from home, courtesy of a one-way ticket to Montana, a place that seems about as far away from the violence and poverty of the Columbus, Ohio, projects as the moon. She wants adventure and excitement–if such things exist for a pre-menopausal African American woman with three grown, deadbeat children.

Juanita’s new life in Paper Moon, Montana, begins at a local diner where a culinary face-off with chef and owner Jess Gardiner finds Juanita in front of Jess’s stove serving up home cookin’ that lures the townsfolk like a magic spell. And suddenly Juanita, who was just passin’ through, now has a job by popular demand.

Out here in this wide-open space, Juanita’s heart can no longer hide, especially when she sees herself through the eyes of the wonderful and eccentric people of this down-to-earth town. She’s happy in Paper Moon; she’s found a home, but can she stay? And then there’s Jess. She has always dreamed of romance, but she never planned on falling in love.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-10-08

This book is a short, quick read but a great story of a middle aged woman with the courage to pack her bags, leave her grown butt kids and put herself first for once in her life. In the process she finds herself. Great story.

5 out of 5 stars What We Fear, We Create..........2005-11-28

I am sure many of us have heard this Dr. Phil-ism. I believe it is true in all its forms--self-fulfilling prophecies and such. DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF is a simple, straight-forward book, and readers will benefit from its eloquence. Exaggerated, overblown writing may have its place, but Sheila Williams' first book will have a place in your spirit. Strip away the main character's (Jaunita Louis') skin color, occupation, neighborhood--all of the superficial things that can separate us from her story, and we will see ourselves. Facing the same challenges. On the same journey toward fulfillment.

What I got from DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF was a lesson: Do everything you fear to do. Get locks or a long weave, if you must. Learn to merengue. Take a trip to northern China. Study at an institution for culinary arts or interior design. Take your vacation in Fiji. Have a baby at 40. Get your MBA at 54. Do it all, because this is the only life we get. Even those who believe in a second life cannot be sure, so we ought to make the best of this world, this life's opportunities.

I was reminded that I cannot blame anyone but me if I don't take those chances in life that will, in the end, make me the best form of myself that I can achieve.

Good For The Soul.

I loved it. If you ever thought about breaking away to a fresh start...read this book. Dancing on the Edge of the Roof takes hold of the reader and never lets go. You can't wait to see what Juanita gets into next. Ride along with her on each adventure and take a moment to enjoy nature the way Mother Nature intended. What a romance! The ending leaves you feeling completely satisfied, yet ironically waiting anxiously for a sequel. I highly recommend this book for the mature and exciting women of today.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this story.......2005-08-20

This story was well written, and I enjoyed the characters very much. I would like to have seen more love scenes and interactions though.

4 out of 5 stars Dancing on the Edge of Self Discovery.......2005-07-27

When I decided to purchase this book I thought I was getting a light read. You know, something that would titillate my senses. What I didn't expect was to read a book that would instead titillated my imagination and personal desire to explore my own dreams.

This book is more about self discovery and love of one's self than love of another. It also encourages one to reach for that star/brass ring or else you may never find out who you truly are or were meant to be.

Basically, the story is about Juanita; a 42 year old mother of three who decides to take an "adventure" before it's to late. On a whim she decides to go to Paper Moon, Montana where she meets some strange but nice people and how they end up sharing their lives with one another.

As I read, I felt the overbearing suffication that Juanita - the main female character - felt when she was living in Ohio and the "breath" she took when she moved to Montana. I loved her interaction with the other characters - especially Jesse - and found myself laughing out loud during different events.

The only reasons I did not give it a 5 was the author - who did such a wonderful job discribing Paper Moon, Montana and it's surroundings that I actually tried to see if there really were such a place - could have gone so much further in certain parts and characters such as the "Pow Wow", Millie - the owner of the bed and breakfast, and definitely Juanita and Jesses' romance that it left me hanging and a bit unsatisfied.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars The Wild One??.......2007-06-25

Plenty of the other reviewers have covered the 4 books by 4 authors so I will stick to the story. All four books are good, but I feel that the romance between Tanner and Callie was very forced and contrived. Not the best of Elaine Barbieri's work and I really like her work.

Hey, not every book can be a 5 and it still was a nice read. I will spend the next three books hoping that the evil stepmother gets tarred and feathered!

5 out of 5 stars Tanner! The Wild One!.......2006-11-06

I bought this book unaware that it was a first book in a series. (I didn't look in the back of the book). When the book ended I was lost, thank god a friend of mine who trades books with me just happened to have the second book. I went out an bought my own copy. I have read this one and the other three in the series twice now.

Tanner leaves his home after being disowned by his father, because of his stepmother. Years later he returns and meets and falls in love with Callie. Family secrets, a evil stepmother, and family conflict tear a family apart.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-09-03

I really enjoyed this book. Both characters are so likeable! Tanner is a misunderstood man who was thorwn out of his house because his lying [...] of a step mother wanted him but he turned her down. He gets word that his father is dyng and comes home. Callie is a smart woman with a mysterious past. I understand why she wants revenge and I love how she falls in love with Tanner in spite of her mission. I can't wait to read the others in this series!

4 out of 5 stars Great End.......2004-04-27

Very good book.
I found the book a little boring in the beginning, but in the end it was great!!

5 out of 5 stars A great start to a 4 part series.......2002-05-22

Absolutely amazing how 4 different authors could construct such a well-written, 4 part series that maintains continuity and quality! It's a credit to the authors Elaine Barbieri, Bobbi Smith, Constance O'Banyon, and Evelyn Rogers.

"The Wild One" starts off the "Secret Fires" series with Tanner McBride returning home to Sidewinder Texas, at the request of his dying father, Tom McBride. The McBride Family had been split apart 4 years ago, after the father remarried 1 week after his wife's death. The scheming stepmother/wife, Clare, drove a wedge between the entire family - the 3 children fled the Circle M ranch & Tom McBride's tyrannical rule. Four years later, the McBride heirs are summonsed home.

Tanner's story is unique and touching. He has grown up enough to realize that he must confront his past, his father and himself, before he can go forward. Callie has traveled to Sidewinder Texas with a different agenda in mind - she plans on killing Tanner.

As the plot unravels, you become entrenched in the McBride family saga.

This is a great start to an enjoyable 4 part series. Definitely read them in order:
The Wild One
The Half Breed
The Agreement
The Loner

Book Description

“Oh, I wish I were anywhere but here, anywhere out of this redtape-ridden world of ours! I wish I were in the planet Mars!”

Whisked away to the legendary red planet, the intrepid Lieutenant Gullivar Jones is caught up in the adventure of a lifetime. To win the love of a beautiful princess, he fights his way across a dying and savage planet of desolate cities, lost races, utopian societies, and the haunting and unforgettable River of Death.

This classic, influential tale of Mars, written in the utopian tradition of H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine, is also considered a possible inspiration for the immortal Barsoom of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Both reflective and imaginative, Gullivar of Mars celebrates the acuity and storytelling power of science fiction writers of the early twentieth century and continues to influence writers and to entertain readers today.

This commemorative edition includes the full text of the classic 1905 edition, a new introduction by Richard A. Lupoff, an illustration by Thomas Floyd, and an afterword by Gary Hoppenstand.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable Classic !.......2006-02-21

Gullivar of Mars (1905) by Edwin Lester Arnold - 193 pages - rating: 8.0/10

More than just a swashbuckling adventure, although much adventure there is, Gullivar of Mars is an intelligent blend of high fantasy, gothic horror and epic romantic voyage.

The writing style is classic English which does require a few pages to become accustomed to, but only a few. Once done the reader will find its unique flare to be particularly engaging and enjoyable rather than a burden.

Many suggest that Gullivar of Mars, which was written some 8 years prior to Edgar Rice Burrough's A Princess of Mars (1913), had a significant influence on the popular Burroughs novel, but you will find little similarity in style or plot. The two novels are entirely different with the exception perhaps of the location of events. I must quickly admit that A Princess of Mars remains one of my favorites of all time.

Gullivar of Mars is an excellent novel that flows smoothly and will surprise and delight you in ways you will not expect.

4 out of 5 stars Happy 100th Anniversary!.......2005-05-05

This is an early science fiction novel that was originally published in 1905. It is about an American Naval Lieutenant, Gullivar Jones, who takes a magic carpet to Mars. It is somewhat reminiscent of the works of H.G. Wells, specifically The Time Machine. That is to say, in both books the protagonist encounters two seperate races, one peaceful and one violent. Anyway, this is a pretty entertaining book. It features an intriguing blend of science fiction, quest fantasy and gothic horror. There is also a fair amount of humor in it. Fans of early science fiction should give it a read.

4 out of 5 stars Arnold's precursor to ERB's John Carter of Mars.......2003-11-27

There might not be any substantive proof that Edgar Rice Burroughs read "Gullivar of Mars" before he started writing his own classic Barsoom series, but if you have read "A Princess of Mars" and "The Gods of Mars" then you would have to conclude ERB did read this 1905 Edwin L. Arnold novel. Of course, Arnold owes a debt to H. G. Wells and "The Time Machine" as well, not to mention Jonathan Swift, but it is the connection with ERB that has managed to keep this book in print, and deservedly so as far as I am concerned.

The basic story of "Gullivar of Mars" is that Lt. Gullivar Jones magically ends up on Mars and travels around the Red Planet trying to rescue the beautiful Princess Heru. The villain is the evil Ar-Hap, who is trying to conquer Seth, the city of the beautiful Hither folk. Originally published in 1905 as "Lieut. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation," at the time the comparisons to Swift's satire would have been clear, while from our vantage point the parallels to Burroughs are glaringly obvious. However, Gullivar Jones is nowhere near being a hero in the mold of John Carter. He certainly tries a lot, but like the original Gullivar he does not have much luck.

Keep in mind that this novel was written in 1905 and that Arnold would have been quite familiar with the utopian tradition represented by not only Swift, but Samuel Butler's "Erewhon," Edward Bellamy's "Looking Backward: 2000-1887," and other late 19th-century works where a traveler to a distant place (or time) experiences a strange new world. There are more adventure elements in Arnold's story, to be sure, but there is also a stronger sense of satire than you would find in most Burroughs pulp fiction yarns (with a few notable exceptions mostly to be found in his Venus series). With the Hither folk as lazy but sensual people, who have forgotten the knowledge and the slaves that built their advances socieites, Arnold certainly seems to be making a political point. The Hither seem like nice folk, but this is not a good society. Meanwhile, the "bad" guys, the Thither people, exhibit much more human compassion towards the strange visitor from another planet. Then there is Gulliver, who has no doubts about his superiority to both races and who actually claims part of Mars for the U.S.

Still, this novel will also remind you of a serial, where the hero has a series of adventures, one after another. Of those it is the idea of the River of Death that really stands out (the dead are floated down the river, which has some interesting effects the more up river Gullivar travels). This would be a fairly interesting science fiction adventure on its own terms, but the obvious connections with the Burroughs novels makes this the most interesting non-ERB novel ERB fans could read. This edition in the Bison Frontiers of Imagination Series offers a introduction by Richard Lupoff and an afterword by Gary Hoppenstand, which put "Gullivar of Mars" in its appropriate literary contexts with regards to both the genre and the times.

I just couldn't put this book down and re-read many statements since I first read it. This was my 'all-time' best book I've read and had a huge influence on personal ways of thinking as well as a Pastor in ministry. What a great way to look at life from a Bible based perspective.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars If You Like Oral Roberts You Will Like This Book.......2005-02-24

If you do not like Oral Roberts, you may still like this book.

Roberts uses the words "I", "me", or "my" 34 times in the table of contents. In this slightly two dimensional autobiography the author paints himself with a shining brush that glosses through some of his more controversial moments leaving the critical reader thinking, "There is probably a little more to the story." There are aspects of the book that will probably cause most theologians to shy away from placing it on their book shelves.

In spite of these drawbacks this book reveals the inner thoughts of a Charismatic mystic who has made an incredible impact on the world of Christian thought. Within the pages of this book are some of the common sense themes that one might find in the autobiographies of any successful person coupled with some of the ideas usually found in the writings of medieval mystics. This is mixed in with the traditional teachings of the charismatic renewal, especially those of the prosperity gospel.

It's a shame that this book will probably be read by persons who already agree with every teaching presented and ignored by all others. There are aspects of this book that could challenge all Christians.

5 out of 5 stars Faith Activating Book!!!.......2003-09-15

Oral Roberts has the credibility to write about faith producing results because his entire life personifies that claim. He has experienced it first hand! This is a book about results. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Contained in this powerful book are teachings based on the Word of God. He shows you how to apply the principles for desired answers.
He traces his own upbringing back to an era when people equated being spiritual with poverty. He says they mistakenly did not want to succeed, thinking it was the same as being worldly. His readers are allowed to share his moments of mediation and prayer as he sought answers from God on issues pertaining to the way God wants His people to live. He says his faith was misdirected, that his inferiority had held him back, robbing him of positive expectations. As a result he could not confidently pray for other people to see results in their lives. He goes into an explanation of his epiphany of Luke 6:38 where Jesus taught there would be positive results from giving. Those results would be that givers would receive good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. The natural realm is governed by the supernatural and he writes "miracles are coming toward you or past you every day" (p. 197). He encourages his readers to look for the supernatural intervention of God. He emphasizes this by noting "as you get into the attitude of expecting miracles, more and more will come toward you" (p. 198). Hebrews 11 teaches that God honors faith and without faith it is impossible to please Him. Roberts adds "He (God) has always done His work by miracles" (p. 201). With God in control of one's life, Brother Roberts advises his readers "make no little plans where you are" (p. 212). I am thankful I was brought up in a Christian home like him. He mentions the contributions both of his parents made to his spiritual development. I feel the same way. I strongly recommend this book. If read with an open mind it will change your life in such a way that you will see positive results that are eternally significant.

5 out of 5 stars A life time of supernatural wisdom in one book.......2002-03-31

I know of no one who has had a more profound effect on the Charasmatic movement in the last fifty years than Dr. Roberts. His book is a complilation of the supernatural wisdom that God has imparted to him over his life time. It is easy to read yet touching and for those that embrace it, it could be life changeing. I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a deeper relationship with the Lord and a more powerful ministry.

        5 out of 5 stars A 'must have' cookbook.......2005-07-22

I LOVE this cookbook. As opposed to some cookbooks which I use for maybe only one or two recipes, I use many of the recipes in this book; they have almost always been successful. If I had to choose just four books from my fairly extensive cookbook collection, this would be one of them!

5 out of 5 stars French cuisine for everyone.......2000-06-11

Anyone who wants to enjoy fast, easy and authentic French cooking in the comfort of their own home should definitely buy this book. The recipes are simple and well explained, and readers will enjoy success after success. Planning an entire informal French meal is easy, as courses are divided into sections in the book.

Most of all, the recipes are delicious and truly French.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recipes with enticing illustrations.......2000-05-17

After making most of the recipes in this book, we've decided it's one of the best we own. Everything we have made from this book has been exceptionally tasty and original, and many are relatively easy. We use it a lot during the week when our time for cooking is very limited. Don't let it's slim size and pretty pictures deter you -the illustrations are helpful and enticing, and the porportion of recipes worth making repeatedly is very high.

4 out of 5 stars Clever Recipes In A Lovely Package.......1999-08-27

I just bought this cookbook last week, and was astounded at the simplicity and beauty of each recipe. The directions are clear and concise, and unlike a lot of French cooking, you don't use every pot and bowl in the house. I liked especially the way the book was formatted - appetizers, soups, main dishes, desserts - you can form a complete menu for a special meal and never need to leave the book! The glossary in the back spells out some of the obscure or unknown techniques employed in the recipes, such as the easy way to roast and skin peppers. The tone of the writing helps to inspire confidence. There's no assumption that you should know all about the intricacies of cooking; just have fun! One caveat: This is not a cookbook for those on a low-fat diet. But, in moderation, each recipe can be enjoyed.

I have been a faithful reader of Mr. Burness's "Auto Album" since the mid-1970s. This book is by far the most comprehensive compilation of his excellent weekly columns. For example, it features not only the annotated drawings but also the accompanying column.

If you want to create an exciting focal point for a room or disguise a boring floor, a colorful floorcloth may be the solution. Created from heavy canvas and adorned with paint, stencils, stamps, paper decoupage, or fabric appliqué, a floorcloth can be a simple accent or a work of art. Consult this book for excellent directions on materials, preparation, finishing, and an array of decorative techniques. The 15 step-by-step projects are divided into simple, intermediate, and advanced, so you can jump in at whatever skill level feels comfortable. Greet visitors with a stenciled welcome mat bordered with paper-napkin decoupage, perk up a bedroom with a Victorian lace design made by spray painting over paper doilies to form the delicate pattern, step into a pool of light with a circle of faux stained glass, or bedeck a table with a runner sporting classical Greek figures. The designs are pleasant and the color illustrations adequate; more photos of the finished floorcloths in actual rooms would have been nice to give a better sense of scale and context. But the thorough instructions and smattering of helpful tips make the book worthwhile. --Amy Handy

Interior decorating is meant to be a personal business, but often designers have such a specific vision that they ignore beloved collections or mementos. In Meditations on Design, John Wheatman insists that it's those extremely personal items that make your home a work of art, and goes on to show a myriad of possibilities for display. Wheatman's vision is of a home that is never "done"--as he says in the first chapter, "Who you are and what you want to say about yourself is continually changing." With pages of lovely photos combined with thoughtful text, he does a great job of showing possibilities for both your home and your inspirations. Couches are low and comfortable, obviously meant for dogs and children as much as for swanky adult gatherings. Colors tend to be bold on the walls while neutral on the furnishings--after all, it's certainly cheaper to repaint than it is to reupholster. Living-room shelves are full of books, window treatments are minimal, and walls are consistently covered with the personal art collections of his clients. Whether your tastes run to chairs (his favorite), African masks, or Japanese pottery, Wheatman has a practical and low-maintenance way to show off treasures while integrating them naturally into the room. The close-up photos of statuary, gardens, and textured pottery will inspire readers to combine their own decorating schemes with day-to-day practical needs. --Jill Lightner

        Book Description

Home is not only where the heart is; it is a sanctuary and sacred space far from the madding crowd. Moreover, it is a place to express yourself. Whether a five-story walk-up or a palatial penthouse, home should creatively reflect its owner, whatever the size, location, or budget. Renowned designer John Wheatman has worked with apartment dwellers, country homesteaders, and city sophisticates over the course of his extensive and award-winning career in interiors. Now he's making his expertise available to all with his first book, Meditations on Design, a sumptuous study that applies his design principles to every kind of interior. Each idea is based on the philosophy that a living space should be functional and comfortable and should enrich the lives of its inhabitants. From arranging collections artfully to incorporating light and nature, Wheatman lends his sensibility to homemaking.

Among the many interior design books I've purchased, this is probably the best of the lot. It's not wordy or very long compared to other design books, but the photography is outstanding and the layout is nicely done.

Wheatman has taught classes in interior design and it shows. The book seems the distillation of all his years of teaching and private practice. Each word seems carefully chosen, like the accompanying photos and the actual design of the homes. I usually dislike authors with too many prescriptive rules, but his focus isn't on a particular style he's enamored of, but on a philosophy of how to make a home a better reflection of the individuals living in it.

Wheatman does an excellent job of using details from the photographs to illustrate concepts and his thought process. Nothing is wasted. This is also reflected in his focus on the importance of culling uneeded possessions, using what you already have in new ways, and focusing on creating a living space rather than "a look." Although it's a slim volume, this is probably the most influencial of the interior design books that I've seen, and I often refer to it for ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Finally someone who speaks from the heart!.......2003-04-19

EXCELLENT! In just the forward the author speaks volumes... There are no "rules", come to a project with an open mind rather than a list of shoulds and should nots based in showroom philosophy....it is not necessary to cast off everything you own and buy everything new...if you worry about a nameless, faceless prospective buyer and resale then you cheat yourself out of the comfort of a home that meets your own needs now....a home is more than an interior space...it needs to encompass your entry, your landscaping, the view of your neighborhood....people need to let go of the idea that a designer "does" a room and then it is "done"....a good home changes and evolves over time as we humans do...a good home is never "done"....it grows with the people who occupy it...

The book then goes on to offer 21 principles to be taken into account while you delve into the enjoyable and gratifying task of creating your own personal space.Photographer David Wakely does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the rooms. The author intentionally "included a number of David's nature photographs" so that they might inspire people to open up to the wonders of the outside world, encouraging people to reproduce such beauty in their own homes.

"Your home is your corner of the world. It should both enrich your life and enable you to share your gifts with others. Designing your space is all about who you are and what you enjoy. My hope in writing this book, is to inspire you to use home design ~ something we al must do in one fashion or another ~ as means of creative self expression..."

A lovely book for those who are open to receive....

        5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-10-19

I have a collection of books on interior design and this is one of my favorites because he covers the basics of what makes a room work for you. The simplicity of his presentation gave me volumes of ideas to work with, and I felt like I had some solid tools for creating my rooms into unique atmospheres that fed my soul. I used one of the tools right after reading the book and "edited" my master bedroom. It now has a much more calm and serene feeling to it and all I did was remove the furniture and small items that made it feel so cluttered.

1 out of 5 stars Misguided by other reviews.......2001-09-10

Based on the previous positive reviews - in particular by a professional interior designer -, I decided to buy Wheatman's book. When the book was delivered, my secretary opened the parcel and looked through the book mumbling "what a waste of money". I have to agree: The pictures have generally no information. About 20% of all pictures show foggy/misty ponds, a flower in a vase, the ocean. Why that? To reflect the style of Wheatman's writing which is somewhat poetic, that is describing the higher ideals of interior design in a romantic manner. It reminds me on these $... books you can buy in tobacco stores at major European train stations: Cheap photographs of misty valleys accompanied by a sentence encouraging you "to rest in yourself". Definitely not what I expect from an interior design book. The remaining 80% of the book deal with variations of the cover picture: Wheatman seems to have very limited resources in his design. In summary, I suggest not to buy this book, unless you like the meditative writings available at the train stations.....

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2001-07-12

This is a wonderful book and my favorite interior design book. It is filled with inspiring but simple ideas to help make that connection between your heart and soul. The author's pictures of his own home made me want to move right in!

How excited i was when i bought this book. A dedicated Stones follower, i snapped it up immediately. It contains many photographs, many unseen previously, although most of them are of similar situations; on stage, and at Ronnie Wood's house in Ireland. Interesting and nice photographs, however, they have limited variation, and therefore limited staying power. The book does include interviews with the band and touring musicians, adding some interesting anecdotes, however, the book is too obviously put together by a stalwart Stones fan. He does put in his own text occasionally, but, even though the Voodoo Lounge tour was a huge success, it is not exactly unbiased reporting; at the end, for instance, he says the Stones still have nothing to show for their great work from the Queen - I find this ridiculous on behalf of my favourite Stone, Keith Richards. Keith Richards may have come back from near-death and have made some of the greatest rock'n'roll music ever recorded, however he did get off a life sentence for possession of class A drugs - not a bonus! It is this ridiculous reporting that lets the book down. However, it was an interesting read (there is only one small passage by the author!) and the photos were great at first.
