Nearly two decades later, during the August hiatus from her four therapists, Marea takes a reluctant trip home to Princeton. There her eyes are newly opened to the past when she uncovers her father's secret Cold War diary.

Marea is a seeker, travelling the world for seven years after college. When she stops, she finds four therapists, simultaneously, to help her sort herself out. An important factor in her quest is that her father was a scientist on the Manhattan Project, thus Marea's relationship with the "actual" Einstein.
The thematic metaphors are rich. Seeing four therapists gives tangibility to the multiple strands we all possess, and perhaps need to explore for self-understanding. Marea's travelling can translate to any number of driven behaviors and patterns in our lives.
I appreciated the psychological insights in this well-written, compelling novel.

Dancing With Einstein is written with such care and talent; it is a pleasure to read, like a wonderful meal. It has everything: a story that moves and keeps you turning the pages, a depth of insight into humanity, humor, great characters. This is an intriguing piece of historical fiction about a significant moral quandary that has long been hidden from view. I found myself laughing out loud, crying and deepening in self-understanding. This book is in the class of Cold Mountain, Prince of Tides, The House of Spirits, and the Poisonwood Bible. Highest marks!
Dancing around character developement.......2004-06-08
I'd like to know what the other reviewers read- because this book was neither compelling nor very entertaining. I found the writing to be just o.k. and the characters not compelling enough. This could have easily have been a novella instead of a short book. At times Marea the main character seemed self-destructive and not likeable. I just didn't like the unfinished feeling of the true intent of the story for Marea to find herself and figure out her fathers mysterious death that supposedly infulenced her past and somewhat current lifestyle. Also the sex in the book was illplaced and illneeded- it didn't help the book. If you are a Wenner fan then obviously you like her style and this book. This was my first and probably last time of reading this author.
Touching and brilliant.......2004-04-02
Among the many triumphs Kate Wenner achieves in her new novel is its compelling portrait of the aged Einstein seen through the eyes of Marea, the protagonist of this story, as a young girl. Their developing relationship and almost mystical mutual understanding is deftly written, completely believable, and immensely touching. As a young woman Marea is haunted by the loss of "Grandpa Albert" almost as much as by the death of her father in a car crash when she was 12. The unresolved questions, regrets, and resentments that untimely death left her with might have made for a real downer of a story, but Wenner conceived the brilliantly comic idea of having Marea see four therapists simultaneously--a time- and space-bending solution I'll bet Einstein himself would have liked.

I loved this book! A compelling story beautifully written, with characters so carefully drawn that they have stayed with me long after I finished the book. I particularly loved Marea's sessions with her four concurrent therapists! Highly recommended.

By Honor Betray'd (1994) is the third novel written in the original Mageworlds trilogy. At this time, however, it is the sixth of the series in internal chronological sequence, following Starpilot's Grave. In the previous book, the Magelords have taken Galcen, the marines have joined Jos Metada, Commodore Jervas Gil has pulled together the Mageworlds fleet at Ophel, Ari Rosselin-Metada has fled Admiral Vallant to Gyffer, Llannat Hyfid has brought her motley crew and the deathwing Night's-Beautiful-Daughter to Gyffer, and Beka Rosselin-Metada has declared herself as the new Domina of Lost Entibor and the focal point of the resistance. Moreover, Owen Rosselin-Metada has found Errec Ransome imprisoned by the Mages, has proven his mastery, and has to been told to retrieve his staff and claim the Guild Mastership.
In this novel, Grand Admiral Theio syn-Ricte sus-Airaalin tries to break Errec's defenses, but fails. At Gyffer, Ari and Llannat join with local defense forces against Admiral Vallant and the Mages. Within Infabede sector, Jos captures warships from Vallant and decides to attack Galcen. At Suivi Point, Beka incorporates the local RSF squadron into the resistance fleet, Tarveet of Pleyver takes out a treason contract against her, and Ignaceu LeSoit breaks several regulations, and the docks, getting Warhammer away from Contract Security. On Nammerin, Owen and his apprentice, Klea Santreny, take ship to Pleyver to fight Mages. At Waycross on Innish-Kyl, Commodore Gil negotiates with former privateers to form a fleet around his three capital ships.
The Grand Admiral knows that he has a little cleaning up to do, but believes that the war is almost won. However, the resistance is gathering. All these forces, Republic and Mage, are converging on Gyffer. Should be a slam-bang fight.
This concluding volume of the original trilogy certainly brought everything to a boil, but the final plot twist is a humdinger. Recommended for Mageworlds fans and anyone who enjoys stories of interstellar war and intrigue.

This volume brings the original Mageworlds trilogy to a resounding conclusion, and forces the characters (and hopefully the reader as well) to re-examine their pre-existing assumptions. Maybe the Mages aren't the practicioners of dark sorcery that the Republic has always considered them -- far from it, they have a system of practices as firmly bounded by morals and ethics as those of the Adepts, even if those morals and ethics, and the paradigm of the universe that underlies them, is somewhat different. And certainly the methods the Republic used at the close of the First Magewar a generation earlier -- namely the brutal suppression of Mage Circles and the reduction of the homeworlds to extreme poverty -- did not secure long-term peace. To attain more than a temporary victory, they must be ready to think in new ways about what they are trying to accomplish.
The Mageworlds trilogy can be read at one level as a space opera with lots of slam-bang battles and wild adventures. At the same time, they can also be read as a philosophical exploration of the nature of cultural misunderstanding.
More than just another space adventure.......1997-07-10
This book has everything to be a space adventure, but it is far more than that. This is a classic combination of action and adventure with characters and plot. If I could think of a better book to tell you about I would. Quite simply, The Mageworlds is the best series I have ever read and I have read several thousand. If you want everything in a book, look no farther

I am very disappointed with this book. The author has an excellent idea. Her comparison of crises in the life of a Christian with the seasons and trees is good. However, she is too repititious. The Purpose Driven Life is a much better book.

While there is some useful information for beginning collectors here, the photographs are of varying quality, and many are completely out of focus. Some beautiful pieces and some nice collections depicted.

Suited to small workshop veneering.......2007-04-01
So far this is the only book I've seen that provides the kind of advice I, as a small workshop user, am seeking on veneering. I haven't worked on veneering before, but do like to do things well. Hosker is aimed at hand-applied techniques and for this provides a lot of useful detail (on applications etc) and context (on wood behaviour etc), and has plenty of illustrations. He reviews a number of application methods, although seems unaware of the technique of ironing dried PVA, (as detailed in a free online 83p PDF book, "Preparing and Applying Decorative Wood Veneers and Inlays to Substrates" by the Decorative Wood Veneers Association in Australia, a very worthwhile publication to look up). Also absent is any discussion of urea formaldehyde use. Therefore there is no "pros and cons" discussion on these options. I noted that in regard to hammer veneering with animal glue, Hosker isn't as quite as complete as Tage Frid's old article in Fine Woodworking. It is still a useful book, especially since there aren't too many veneering books that seem to be aimed at the informed small workshop user. He doesn't venture into vacuum presses or large commercial presses, a good thing in my view: those approaches are best treated elsewhere. But I'm still waiting for a truly comprehensive up-to-date illustrated treatment of manual technique for furniture veneering (rather than marquetry) for small workshop users.

The best book available on the subject?.......2001-06-13
This book is a thoroughly amateurish effort. The layout is bad, the typography is ridiculously bad, and the illustrations are not clear or particularly helpful. Much of the book is extraneous to the subject, a folksy writing blend of which I am not particularly fond. The author does seem sincere in trying to be helpful.
Nonetheless, this book is, to my knowledge, the only dedicated overview of how to make your own banding. Moreover, it does this well. Total beginners may find the lack of information in some areas to be confusing, but my guess would be that anyone ready to make their own banding probably has enough woodworking experience to puzzle it all out.
Creating Beautiful Boxes with Inlay Techniques -- by Doug Stowe is a beautiful book that covers some of the same ground, but the emphasis on Stowe's book is more on the box than the banding.
Sometimes you can't buy the best book on a subject. You have to settle for buying the only book on the subject. I'm giving it an extra star just for existing.
Excellent concepts for homemade Inlays; NOT for a Novice........2000-07-23
Mr. Loeffler initially expands on the terminology and concepts of wood and the woodworker's craft. It is very brief and introductory. The meat of the text is in Chpt 3 and 4, and sections of the remaining chapters. Chpts 3 & 4 provide the basic concepts to designing an infinite variety of inlay bandings such as multi-stage inlays, ribbon designs, one unqiue inlay he calls the "Duck" design. He covers the way the inlay core is assembled and built, the binding veneers used to bind the cores together, as well as how to manipulate the cores, binding veneers in multiple stages and sawing/cutting techniques to prouce the more elaborate and beautiful multi-stage designs. In addition, certain tidbits of valuable information is sprinkled throughout the text on issues one must be aware of when designing and constructing an inlay banding.
However - and this is a big however! - Mr. Loeffler does not expand into how one would (or could) exactly go about glueing the bandings, such as the types of glues to be considered, dry times, hold and set times, etc. He does not cover exactly how one would go about cutting the inlay banding from a core panel into the appropriate thicknesses using, for instance, a band saw, the tool he recommends - there is absolutely NO helpful or insightful informaiton on setting up your bandsaw, or other tool, properly cutting the panels to even thicknesses, or what blades and guide settings for your bandsaw. Lastly, no exact process is given as to how one would go about sanding the inaly bandings to even thicknesses and/or to an acceptable surface finish. As a woodworker, one must rely on your knowledge and experince with the bandsaw, power sander, and other shop tools in order to succesfully make inlays using this book.
Thus, although I highly recommend this book in order to understand how intricate inlay bandings can be designed and constructed in your own shop, I would highly recommend a good book on bandsaws (or accurately cutting veneers on bandsaws), and sanding techniques. Beautiful inlay banding designs can definitely be had using the concepts shared in Mr. Loeffler's book, but his book in no way guarantees that you will be successful at creating the finished product.
Step - by - step inlay banding production.......2000-03-27
First impression: A cheap, homemade set of thoughts. (presentation/cover could be better) color pictures of the designs would have been better.
Subsequent impression(s): A well thought out and informative method book.
Although the book is in black and white only, the diagrams and inlay patterns can be clearly followed and understood. It takes you from the basics of wood selection, terminology and inlay design and building through to the tools needed. This is a very basic book that every novice could use in a concise and understandable way to get started in inlay design. Absolutely no prior knowledge is needed or assumed. This is only to start, but the author make it look so simple that maybe no other book would be needed.

God for professionals perhaps.......2007-04-01
This is a textbook for those who are going into veneering as an adjunct to a professional practice. It concentrates on mechanised equipment such as large heated presses (but doesn't discuss vacuuum presses, probably not available when this was written: and in this shows its age as a text). It does not cover the techniques of hammer veneering, or other low-tech techniques likely to be used by a home workshop user. On the other hand it is excellent at covering the more timeless principles of veneering (veneer manufacture, stresses, matching etc.). As a serious and skilled amateur, it still wouldn't be my first choice. 2 or 3 stars for a home workshop user, probably 4 stars for a commercial practice needing a few reference books on the shelf.
Encyclopedic.......2006-03-05
Lincoln's outstanding book really does live up to title promise of being "complete," or at least comes close. It covers just about every aspect of wood veneer, from its history in classical Egypt up to the 1980s. After a whirlwind tour of history (the whole of the Renaissance gets less then half a page), Lincoln goes on to discuss the tree, how it's cut, how the tree's habit of growth affects the veneer and the final product, and cutting and storage of the veneers. The next eighty pages discuss adhesives and tools, especially the custom jigs needed for particular tasks. This section often addresses the commercial woodshop more than the amateur - although interesting and a possible source of ideas, the massive, heated vacuum presses would be out of range of all but the largest and best-equipped shops. Likewise, the discussion of adhesives includes formaldehyde-based materials that a home woodworker is not likely to use. This is the one section of the book that's showing its age. Although PVA and hide glue are still common, this does not address any of the adhesives new in the last twenty years.
The second and longer part of the book covers technique, ending with a few projects well within reach of the skilled amateur. It starts with matching, the process of laying out mutliple sheets of veener next to each other. This is necessary in the many projects where one sheet of veneer just isn't big enough to cover the work. It's also an exciting part of the creatives process. Lincoln covers it in detail, down to a discussion of the inevitable difference between front and back of a sheet, caused by the inherent asymmetry of cutting the veneer from the log. He also goes over the basics of marquetry, parquet, edge and inlay bands, finishing, and repairs. The book ends with some reference material, including a very helpful table of a few hundred types of wood, giving brief descriptions of each one's grain, figure, relative cost, and working characteristics. Although useful, this section will work even better with an illustrated reference (such as Lincoln's "World Woods in Color").
This is a great introduction to a broad and useful set of woodworking techniques. Veneers are not just an effective way to get more use from each tree, especially rare ones. They offer a variety of decorative and structural capabilities that can't be equalled in other ways. The beginner might need another reference for filling in some of the how-to details, but this is the place to start for understanding the advantages and techniques of veneering.

Visit a living room on a Saturday in the 1920s: What you are likely to find is family or friends gathered around the Victrola, laughing at the antics of a comedy routine recorded on a disc, or even a tube, called the 78.
Technically, the 78 was produced as late as the 1950s, but the real heyday of the medium ended in the 1940s, as radio variety shows took their cue to air the popular comedians, and to add musicians and singers for "variety."
