5 out of 5 stars His talent.......2004-04-12

Yukio Mishima was many things in his life; an author was only one of them. In general, I have more respect for him as a personality than I do for his individual books. I could go on all day about the man himself, but my praise of this or that novel is usually conditional, and when I find myself thinking of books to re-read just for enjoyment's sake, he usually isn't near the top of my list. I think that these stories are some of his highest-quality work, though, and I can recommend them without any reservations, not just to enthusiasts of Japanese culture or the sort of magnificently sick aesthetic that Mishima represents. The title story, although as coldly inhuman as much of Mishima's work, still seems pyschologically accurate. The second story, Three Thousand Yen, is disarmingly and uncharacteristically sweet, but tempered by a more characteristic ending. Patriotism is probably the standout of this standout, with flawless prose, again backing Mishima's vision with a realistic setting. 'Pearl' is clever, and 'Onegata' is another very polished story, a good candidate for anthologization. 'Swaddling Clothes' is a personal favorite, wickedly barbed and haunting. The greatest strength of this collection is that Mishima never seems to be repeating himself - he explores his central themes from different angles, in a variety of styles, and provides something of outstanding artistic merit.

5 out of 5 stars Piercing Clarity.......2003-12-30

Mishima writes with amazing clarity of thought. His sentences are among the clearest I have ever read. I feel at a loss of words, a "poverty of emotion," as Mishima might call it, in trying to write about Death in Midsummer. The only thing I can say - to even try to do him and his book justice - is READ IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive.......2002-12-14

A friend recommended Mishima to me, and this was the book I picked up. First, to respond to a reviewer below, this book (at least my copy) has no introduction, no preface, no afterward, and has numerous translators. The stories were selected by Mishima himself, and the book was published in New York. Reading any "leftist" intentions on the part of the publishers of this book, then, is certainly very strange, unless it was gleaned from the three paragraph synopsis on the back.

That having been said, I was immensley impressed by this book. After the first three stories ("Death in Midsummer", "Three Million Yen", and "Thermos Bottle") I was ready to admit the genius of the author. The title story is abridged, and the translation on all three is awkward -- I don't know a bit of Japanese, but the English itself lacked lucidity and had some confused grammar. Nevertheless, there's a remarkable detail to the deliniation of character, a mesmorizing lyrical style, and a powerful look into the psychology of man when confronted with tragic and absurd circumstances. The stories, also, are brilliantly subtle satires of middle class values. The author clearly intends to show the decline in the Japanese character as a result of Westernization and modernization. At some points it hints at leftist values -- a dislike of the bourgeois, a sympathy for the poor, etc. But Mishima's strange and anachronistic political beliefs show us that his work is best read as insight into the identity crisis facing modern Japan, and not as leftist, or even entirely rightist. (I read, while glancing through a biography of the author, a statement he made after speaking to a group of leftist students. He said something to the effect of "We shared a friendship and an understanding, embracing through a barbed fence...")

As much as I appreciated the first three stories, however, I found the rest of the book to be much better, revealing an incredible diversity of style and theme. "The Priest and His Love" is a beautiful Buddhist fable exploring the paradox and power of beauty and sensuality. The style of writing reminded me a lot of Pär Lagerkvist. "Patriotism" caught me completely off-guard, and undoubtedly represents the greatest work in the book. Its the story of an officer who commits seppuku (ritual suicide) and his wife, who follows. With great fluidity and poetic grace, Mishima describes their final night together, then, in a frustratingly objective prose, describes the morbid end of the two. Violence and sensuality are tied in with finality, duty and beauty. Mishima was an aesthete, but of the rarest kind -- much in the spirit of Poe, perhaps. The story had an enormous impact of me.

"Dojoji," auspiciously set after "Patriotism," is one of Mishima's Noh plays, and shifts entirely to the languid, allegorical style that characterizes the Noh (contrasted by the turbulent, grotesque realism of the previous story). The play is about the auction of a giant wardrobe that has a gruesome past. Mishima's attempt to reinvigorate the tired Noh theatre was a noble effort, and (in my opinion) a successful one. The spiritual quality of the theatre proves a profound vehicle to the pessimism and spiritual despondency that characterizes modern literature and thought. After reading this play, I went out immediately and found a copy of "Five No Plays by Mishima" which I very much look forward to reading. The next story, "Onnagata," deliberately takes us to the other side of Japanese theatre, the kabuki. Its a homoerotic tale of obsession and infatuation, and a love triangle between three men (or rather, two men and an onnagata -- a man who plays, or rather lives, as a woman in kabuki theatre). One man seeks the elusive love of a famed onnagata by joining the kabuki theatre. The onnagata, for Mishima, is "the illicit child born of a marriage between dream and reality." As infatuation drives him further and further into the world of the kabuki, it has the strange effect of driving him further and further away from the onnagata's love, who, in the end, falls in love with a pretentious young guest director who knows nothing of the kabuki.

"The Pearl" completely surprised me. Of all things, its a social comedy, the type I had suspected, from reading the other stories, that the author was incapable of. To my delight, I was proved wrong. Again poking tremendous fun at the middle class, the story is about five middle aged women, and a lost pearl and a silly mischevious act that explodes into a tale of deciet, head games, and irony.

After reading this, I am a confirmed Mishima fan. It has also excited me into exploring contemporary Japanese literature. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great Artist and Nationalist.......2002-10-07

The writer is great, his book is great. But the publisher of this edition is NOT great or even mediocre. W.W. Norton AKA New Directions is a trendy San Francisco based publisher that needs to cut back on their own morbid, introspective, over-edited, leftist interpretations. I'm not interested in the phobias and insecurities of such people. They need to relax and understand that whatever personal choices they make have little impact on the world at large. As opposed to the confined quarters of the coffee house or similar yuppie agora.

A lot of this was pretty confusing too understand but he wrote one really great story dealing with Buddhism. He definitely has a gift for details and dialouge.

Thomasina Tyler, Tommie to her friends, is a hard-charging businesswoman, proud of becoming one of the top real estate sales professionals in Texas. Her career hasn't given her the time to find 'the one' yet, but she wouldn't mind finding the right guy. One thing, though--that guy had better understand that her goals, her career, her ambitions matter. She's sacrificed a lot for family--happily--but she doesn't intend to give up her life to turn into some man's cook, house-cleaner, and baby factory--not even if he's a hunk like millionaire Pete Schofield.

After years in the north-east, Pete Schofield is coming back to Texas. He hires Tommie to help him find the perfect house--the house that will be perfect for the life he intends to create. Pete wants the idealized family he grew up in--and has enough money he thinks he can get it. But when he starts to see pretty Tommie in that house with him, he gets a rude awakening. Tommie isn't about to give up her ambitions--not even in the face of what Pete recognizes as an attraction as strong as their own.

Author Judy Christenberry always populates her stories with family--and THE TEXAN'S RELUCTANT BRIDE is no exception. As Tommie relates with her triplet sisters, we see many of the same characteristics that Pete holds--but which he does not know how to accept in a woman. Through the eyes of his brother, we begin to see that Pete's idealized fantasy of family is both unattainable and ultimately unrewarding. Giving up dreams is one of the hardest things anyone can do, but unless Pete can realize that the very things that make Tommie so attractive to him are the things that are also driving him away, thanks to his archaic beliefs, he'll never attain happiness.

Readers seeking warm families, hot and handsome Texans, and a lesson that affirms female strength are sure to love Christenberry's THE TEXAN'S RELUCTANT BRIDE.

                    Book Description

Isn't a lot of Catholic doctrine nothing more than incense and mirrors?

There's a commonly-held misconception that the Catholic Church "made up" a lot of its teachings. That much of what Catholics believe has no foundation in Scripture.

How do you debunk that myth if you're a devout Catholic but your knowledge of Scripture is spotty? How do you get to the truth if you're a fervent non-Catholic Christian but your understanding of Catholic teaching is limited. (if not downright inaccurate!)?

The Biblical Basis for the Catholic Faith is written for both audiences. In a non-confrontational manner, author John Salza quotes only from the Bible to explain the basic doctrine of the Catholic Church. Chapter after chapter focuses on doctrinal "hot spots" including sola Scriptura, Tradition, papal infallibility, the seven sacraments, Mary and the saints, justification, salvation, and purgatory.

Here is a book that not only proves that the Catholic faith is biblical, but also that Catholicism is Bible Christianity par excellence. Here is a book that makes a thoughtful and welcome gift for a family member or friend who has questions about the Catholic Church.

I just started making cakes about a year ago, and as a newbie, I was searching for a recipe for strawberry cake from scratch. This was the only book I found that had one. The cake came out looking and tasting great--it looked just like the picture, and I am looking forward to making more cakes from this book for the holidays. The pictures are beautiful (a picture of each cake is shown), and the recipes are easy to follow.

Collecting Staffordshire ceramic figures, a particularly English folk art, has expanded from its origins to include much of the English speaking world. Many of these figures have never before been recorded. A history of the figures, together with sources and relevant bibliographical details, are included, along with a guide to current prices. Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875, Book Two details Religous and Temperance Figures; Hunters and Huntsmen; Shepherds, Gardeners, Harvesters, and Pastoral Scenes; Other Pursuits, Pastimes, and Occupations; Children with Animals; Dogs; Animals; Houses, Cottages, and Castles; and Sport and Miscellaneous.

                        4 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly HIP!.......2007-01-10

Katie Hacker's designs are trully inspiring and quite easy to create. Step by step instruction and pictures (which show you not only results of the projects but also the way they look on your body) will guide beaders from beginners to intermediate level. You'll find lots of unexpected mix match material in each of the project. For those who have been beading before, I recommend this book for some refreshing ideas in designing.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Be Guaranteed to Love What you Make!.......2006-05-01

I had never made a project by Katie Hacker before I read this book. Now, I want to make many, as her designs are really excellent, and her instructions are very clear. I enjoyed the photos of the model wearing the jewelry and I felt as if I were reading an easy, fun, inventive and creative jewelry design book. I particularly liked the choices she gave the reader in color combos--you don't have to stick to one choice when making a project. I also liked the seed bead weaving section as that is something I do not do as yet and would like to learn.

I will be sure to check out Katie's other books -- this one is a great introduction to an excellent teacher, in my opinion, and a wonderful collection of beading projects of all varieties.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent How-To Bead Book.......2006-04-03

This is a fablulous how-to book whether you are just starting out or an experienced beader. After reading the Basics you cannot help but make something in this book. The ideas are extremely unique and *hip*. I am in the process of making the Found Objects Charm bracelet and it is fun. Every charm tells a story and is a part of history in my life. As always, I love your ideas, Katie!

                        I LOVE this book!

It really appeals to a wide range of beaders from very basic to more advanced bead weaving. The projects are easy to follow and achieve a timeless contemporary look no boring, been-there-done-that projects!

I like how many of the projects are very simple to make yet you can easily change the components to create a totally different looking style. So you can make the same bracelet for each girlfriend yet they would all look different. Cool!

The layout is very appealing with lots of pictures and easy to follow steps that tell you everything you need to do a project. The author has also included a lot of tips which I love. In a class, sometimes the tips are worth the price of admission and I feel the same way about this book. So valuable!

I love the quick and easy earring section. The author describes how to make a 10 minute pair of earrings, a 15 minute pair and a 30 minute pair! What a great idea for friends or co-workers last minute birthday gifts which I'm always looking for. Now I can make them!

Love the Rock'n Roll Cuff. Very trendy and clever. You could easily make this one for the guys by altering components.

The history the author includes such as the background of Hill Tribe Silver and Art Glass is very interesting.
I also can't wait to make some of the gift projects. I like how the author has included gifts as well as jewelry. The Beaded Candle Wrap and the Aloha Frame look like some fun ways to use up my scrap beads cluttering my bead drawer. These would make great wedding gifts!

Overall I think this is one of the most fun and easy beading books around and I can't wait to get some friends together and play!

5 out of 5 stars Just what this beady girl was looking for..........2006-03-23

This book is full of fun ideas that look wonderful (the photography is great--images of the ENTIRE projects, nothing cut out) without being too fussy. I like instant-gratification beading, and "Hip to Bead" is filled with this type of projects. It isn't limited to simple projects, though. I'd call most of the projects "one-cup-of-tea" projects, but there are some "two-to-three-cup" projects. The last section in the book, Woven Wonders, includes beading techniques I've been wanting to try: beaded beads and a right-angle weave.
The beads used are just beautiful, and the Katie includes a suppliers list at the end so that you can get the same unique materials that she uses, complete with URLs for every one. Thank goodness for online shopping!
Another thing I love about this book is that it introduces the reader to TONS of beading techniques from wire wrapping to weaving to stitching to stringing. It would be a smart start to any beginning beader's library, and the information on variations and combinations of colors and materials make it useful for an established beader to spice up his or her beading experience. Now, out to the bead store for MORE BEADS!

Prior to this meticulously researched biography, legendary producer Sam Spiegel had loomed large in countless Hollywood memoirs, but was rarely the subject of close examination. Praiseworthy for negotiating a maze of apocryphal stories and unverified details, Sam Spiegel solves many of the mysteries resulting from the falsehoods of "Spiegelese," for the renowned producer--whose crowning achievements included The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia--was perhaps the most inventive liar to gain prominence in Hollywood. With a refreshing absence of judgment, this unflinching study portrays Spiegel as a consummate manipulator, hedonist, philanderer, absentee father, sexaholic (a foot fetishist who favored young girls well into his '70s), and globetrotting entertainer of the social elite, "incapable of guilt" and so charming that he could achieve miracles (and numerous faked heart attacks, to disarm his detractors) while producing some of the greatest films of Hollywood's post-Golden era.

As a first-time biographer, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni (a French journalist who worked as an assistant on Spiegel's final film, 1983's Betrayal) fails to plumb the depths of Spiegel's enigmatic character (so effectively hidden behind his luxurious lifestyle), offering little insight into Spiegel's unique combination of intellect and roguish insincerity. She compensates with a journalist's greatest assets: exacting research and seemingly limitless access to Spiegel's surviving contemporaries, from the late Billy Wilder to On the Waterfront director Elia Kazan and many, many others. The result is a fair and balanced portrait of one of Hollywood's classiest scoundrels, a master thief with impeccable taste and an uncanny instinct for cinematic prestige. --Jeff Shannon

                              Book Description

The incredible life and times of Hollywood's most iconoclastic producer, the miracle worker who went from penniless refugee to show biz legend, and made possible The African Queen, On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, not to speak of many more, including movies as distinct as Suddenly, Last Summer; Nicholas and Alexandra; The Last Tycoon; and Betrayal; all of them sharing the unique vision that earned Spiegel twenty-five Oscars: star-filled, bigger-than-life, conceived on a vast scale, intensely dramatic, and overwhelmingly ambitious.

In this rich and brilliant biography, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, who had the advantage of knowing and working for Spiegel, brings into sharp focus a Hollywood legend who was at once crafty, unscrupulous, mendacious, and equally capable of great charm and petty meanness, who was sentimental and ruthless, a shrewd judge of talent, a gambler on a colossal scale, a man of almost unique artistic vision and courage who was, in the final analysis, that most elusive and rare of movie producers, a genius.

The story of a how a Jewish refugee without a penny to his name managed to produce several of the greatest films of all time is alone worth telling, but Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni has done more; she has drawn the definitive portrait of the man himself -- the elusive, witty, cynical adventurer who, like so many refugees, was able to live, succeed, and raise money everywhere, but who was at home nowhere. Spiegel surrounded himself with luxury and beautiful women but remained a loner despite his countless friends.

Spiegel was mysterious about his origins, prompting Arthur Miller to refer to him as "The Great Gatsby." In reality, he was born of middle-class Jewish parents in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Raised in Jaroslav, in western Galicia, Spiegel left home in his late teens and quickly became a hero of the Hashomer Hatzair, a Zionist youth movement.

Step by step, with immense research and a vast number of interviews, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni recreates the world of Sam Spiegel's childhood and youth, separating often self-serving fiction from fact. She follows Spiegel's dramatic flight from the Nazis in Berlin, a prison sentence in London, problems with the police in Paris and Mexico City, and finally his arrival in Los Angeles. In America his career languished for a time, though he acquired a reputation for being a supreme "fixer," a brilliant luftmensh on the fringes of Hollywood power, the ultimate party-giver who knew everybody's secrets and was always quick to charm women and take advantage of men. Billy Wilder called him "a modern day Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and steals from the poor."

With a brilliant sense of time and place and a deep understanding of Spiegel's complex personality, Fraser-Cavassoni traces his disasters, successes, romances, friendships, and tangled finances in a narrative that is rich with colorful Spiegel stories, scandals, and bon mots.

The cast of characters in Spiegel's life includes Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Robert De Niro, Barry Diller, David Geffen, Katharine Hepburn, John Huston, Elia Kazan, David Lean, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Mike Nichols, Harold Pinter, Otto Preminger, Elizabeth Taylor, Gore Vidal, Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, Darryl F. Zanuck, bevies of beautiful women, three wives, countless members of high society, and, most important, Sam Spiegel himself -- the last of the great independent film producers who, in the swashbuckling tradition of David O. Selznick and Sam Goldwyn, operated alone, aimed high, and believed, above all, in their own star.

More than a major book about the movie business, Sam Spiegel is an intricate and engrossing biography, comparable in its richness, depth, and attention to detail to A. Scott Berg's acclaimed biography of Samuel Goldwyn. It is a marvelous, once-in-a-lifetime reading experience and an astonishing debut for Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2004-05-06

I have a deep interest for history, especially Hollywood history, and Sam Spiegel is a name that crops up all over the place and, until now, has really garnered very little attention in the way of biography relative to his peers. Natasha Fraser-Cassavoni had a personal relationship with Spiegel (he produced a film based on a play by her stepfather Harold Pinter) and is perhaps as qualified as anyone to write the life story of this great producer.

The problem is, although his catalog of films can stand alongside that of anyone in the history of the industry, as a person he doesn't really have any particular standout characteristics that make you take any real interest in him beyond his work. Instead he seems to fit the bill as the stereotype of the Hollywood producer and maybe that alone is enough to make him interesting, but it doesn't come across. The best chapters focus on the films, not the man. There's no denying he was very good at what he did, but this book proved a supreme disappointment simply because I came away not knowing anything more than what I could have learned from a basic filmography. Three stars is a more than generous rating but I give it that because the films are worth the analysis.

                              1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-01-16

I found this book difficult to read much less follow. I have a great interest in "old" Hollywood and have read many books on the subject. This book would be at the bottom of the list.

                              4 out of 5 stars French journalist?.......2003-04-06

Astonishing mistake in the Editorial Review above. That Natasha Fraser could be called a "French journalist" boggles the mind, since her father was the British M.P. Hugh Fraser, her mother is Lady Antonia Fraser (herself daughter of the Earl and Countess of Longford), and her mother is married to Harold Pinter! Authors all.

This woman comes from as distinguised a line of BRITISH authors as can be imagined.
