This book deserves attention, and is in some ways Sontag's best fiction. Rough in some places, painfully rough, the prose grinds through the protagonist's agony, lightens with his fancy, slips away from coherence as he slips from coherence. This is writing on a par with a rough and angry, poignant and bittersweet symphony. It reminds me more of the Shastokovich Symphony no. 7, "Leningrad", than of any other book that I have read. Read it. Read it twice because the first time it can hardly be taken in.

This is the story of man's hallucination during and after his suicide. The surface tone is cold and metallic, distanced. But underneath it is achingly, sadly, brutal.

Interpret this story. Exercise your mind, your powers of analysis and of sensation. This is a layered piece of writing that holds up and puts out on many levels. And don't miss the exquisite prose on pages two through four.

CAT a.k.a. CATALINA a.k.a. CATHERINE.......2007-09-03

Dangerous to Hold is a historical romance that held me captivated throughout each chapter. The story line had many twists that I found to be entertaining yet not very convincing. Without a doubt, I enjoyed this book but with a little more work done on character depth and development and less of a twisted plotline...I would have LOVED the book. I will definitely buy more of Elizabeth Thornton's' work.

Great read, unusual twists and turns, likable primary and secondary characters.......2007-07-09

I would definitely recommend this book; I had only read one other Elizabeth Thornton book and it was a while ago, but I thought I would get "Dangerous to Hold" as it looked interesting and I'm running out of HR authors to read! The story definitely has some twists and turns (one literally had me exclaiming out loud and I had to take a few seconds before I could continue reading!) and the underlying storyline is one of those mystery/suspense ones; it IS essential to the novel, though, and not annoyingly superfluous as you sometimes find.

Setting: Spain and England, early 1800s
Sensuality rating: 6 (underlying tension was consistent and good, progression of the relationship was appropriate)

PROS:
(1) Catherine (the heroine) and Marcus (the hero) are likable, accessible, and well-defined
(2) Their relationship felt authentic and the sexual tension was good
(3) There are some cute moments of jealousy (not that many)
(4) It wasn't one of those books where it's just misunderstanding after misunderstanding until you want to shout out in frustration; the issues or emotions that come up are actually dealt with nicely and relatively promptly and I was very thankful for how mature the characters are and how understanding they are of each other
(5) Supporting characters are good and are also well-defined and just add to the cast
(6) There is a secondary romance that occurs but it only adds to the novel, it doesn't detract

CONS:
(1) There was a lot going on and after I finished the book and sat back and thought about it, there were maybe a couple loose ends and I would have liked there to be an epilogue
(2) *Kind-of-spoiler* You do kind of have to suspend belief, as part of the mystery/suspense storyline seems ... well, not really authentic; I don't want to give away too much, but I guessed the "bad guy" pretty quickly and the measures he took to achieve his aim and that whole premise were overly-dramatic and not very plausible. Also the heroine's role in the whole mess doesn't seem like it would have actually occurred, BUT the book is very good and so despite these minor issues, I still really enjoyed it

CONCLUSION:
A great read that I would definitely recommend; worth buying, so read and enjoy!

Another hit for Ms. Thornton.......2006-07-29

If you haven't tried Elizabeth Thornton, please buy this book. I would recommend almost every single one as an outstanding historical romance read. The plots are always exciting and very thought out. The characters are always just a little bit more than any other author's.
This is a book that I have read probably 6 or 7 times and yet I still can't start it without finishing it that same day (even if I have to stay up till 1 am to do it).

One of my favorites from Elizabeth Thornton.......2004-10-16

I find most of Elizabeth Thornton's Regencies compulsively readable, but "Dangerous To Hold" is one of my favorites.
I really enjoyed the character of the heroine, Catherine Courtnay, an accomplished, unusually self-sufficient woman, particularly for the 19th century. Catherine, a writer and spinster, is leaving the London home of a member of the demimonde (after visiting her estranged sister) one evening when she is accosted by Marcus Lytton, the Earl of Wrotham, who mistakes her for his missing wife, Catalina. He had been tricked into marrying Catalina three years previously while recovering from a war injury in Spain and had not seen his wife since the night of the wedding. Although Catherine resembles Catalina physically, Catherine is eventually able to convince Marcus that she is not his missing wife. Marcus believes that Catalina is hiding in London and behind several attempts on his life, hoping to inherit his fortune. He convinces Catherine to masquerade as his wife in an effort to draw Catalina and her accomplices out into the open. (Not sure if this idea really makes sense, but it serves to throw our hero and heroine together....)
The story contains a number of twists and turns, unusually good secondary characters with an interesting secondary romance, and a moderately good mystery plot.
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy historical romantic suspense, particularly if you are bored with the usual Regency heroine (i.e. an 18 year old dingbat) and looking for a story with a strong and memorable heroine.

Correction - Lisbon IS NOT IN SPAIN.......2004-08-18

As a portuguese I would like to make a correction for those (few I hope) that still think Portugal is a spanish province. It is not! Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, the country with the one of the oldest borders in Europe.
Its a real shame when authors and editors make these kind mistakes which induce readers in error.
I also know that this is a romance and not a History manual, but I never read one which misplace Paris or London...or any other city for that matter.

Good characters, bad situations..........2003-06-14

I found that I liked the characters in these books (and the companion, dangerous to know). There's a lot of humor and sexual tension, and character interaction is at romance best. I found, however, that the 'spy' situations were unbelievable to the point where they detracted from the story. The heroes were too infallible. The situations they found themselves in were too complex, and then too easily solved.

That being said, I love stories that tie together (series), and this is a pretty good series. Good light summer reading.

"Code Name: Danger" Series.......2002-04-08

This series was originally published by Silhouette Intimate Moments. It concerns a top-secret American spy agency called OMEGA. Each installment takes the team on a different high-intensity mission somewhere on the globe, and in each one an operative finds true love.

Merline Lovelace does a fantastic job balancing spy action and romance. I'll pick up anything with her name on it. Dangerous to Hold and Dangerous to Know are re-released compilations of her previous books (although they still work, unlike so many dated MIRA books).

Since some descriptions of this novel have already been written, I'll just add that the next compilation will include UNDERCOVER MAN (Doc's story) and PERFECT DOUBLE (Maggie and Adam's story). Trust me, you DO NOT want to miss that!!!! You can check out those books' reviews if you just can't wait till June for some hints.

What a great read - Can't wait for the next book!.......2002-03-18

This is one romance novel you just have to read. I do not normally read romance novels because they do not usually have depth or depth of characters, but Merline Lovelace really changed my mind with a romance novel filled with suspense and great characters. Jake and Nate are characters that you cannot help but like, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens between Maggie and Adam. Great read!

What a great discovery for me!.......2002-02-11

I picked this book up at the airport while on a business trip and didn't expect to want to keep it. Not only that, but I am looking forward to the next book in July, Dangerous to Love, I believe. I liked the characters of Jake and Nate, both members of Omega, a supersecret government organization. But I am very much intrigued by the background relationship between Maggie (one of the operatives in Omega) and Adam, the aloof, controlled director of the group. That story will come up in the next book ,although I searched the sites and found that it was publised as Perfect Double, I think. I will try to scour the used book stores for it, but if not, will wait for July! Good reading!

Very fun and interesting book.......2007-05-13

This is a great book to get you started in self-expressive journaling and doodling. There is such a variety of reflections and exercises- you can pick and choose the ones you're in the mood to do. I haven't finished going through all of the exercises, but it is a fun book so far. The pages are filled with doodles and drawings by the author. They invite play and spontaneity. It is a great way to get to know yourself better and explore a new means of self-expression.

The text is all hand written which adds to the fun and relaxed nature ofthis book. There are activities on every page and therec are little comic relief characters throughout. Its reall a fun book. Dorinda Hafner of Ghana has authored cookbooks and is featured in a television series about African and African-inspired cuisine. "A Taste of Africa: With over 100 Traditional African Recipes Adapted for the Modern Cook" is a very good introduction to African food for anyone who knows kitchen basics. The recipes are mostly easy and quick, and are made with readily available ingredients. Each recipe has a short introductory text. Recipes are arranged by country; this book contains recipes from each of ten African countries: Ghana; Ivory Coast; Mali; Morocco; Egypt; Ethiopia; Kenya; Tanzania; Zimbabwe; and Nigeria. African-based recipes from five other countries and one city are also included: Brazil; Trinidad and Tabago; Martinique and Guadeloupe; Jamaica; Cuba; and New Orleans. Thoughout the book are boxes containing short features on African history, legends, foodstuffs. A short glossary and bibliography are included. Very well illustrated with photographs of the prepared dishes.

Dorinda Hafner, the engaging host from the PBS cooking shows, has written a companion book. Arranged by country, it has African diaspora recipes from the continent, the Caribbean and the Americas. The recipes are simple and you don't have to be a gourmet chef to cook them. It's a great introduction to the variety and richness of African cooking.

I was in Africa recently and then I saw this book and I had to buy it! I made sudza, the staple in Zimbabwe, and it tasted like it did in Zimbabwe. There are some other really good recipies in the book too but i think sudza, made right is the best. I would definatly recomend buying the book and giving it a try!

This has been a great resource for me returning to sewing after 25 yr. hiatus. I have gone back to it over and over again the past few years to see how they explain something I'm not clear on. It may not please very experienced sewers, but as the title says,"Step-by-Step Guide to Sewing Techniques", not Couture techniques.

Will certainly help the beginner, but don't expect it to get you through a pattern for a very complicated designer garment. A good reference, but it shouldn't be your only one.

Like the previous reader said, this is like a dictionary. It does help me when I am not sure how to do a certain type of stitch. However, some intructions are not much clearer than the ones that come with the patterns.

This book is great for filling in the instructions that come with patterns. You may need a second source for other things though.

I found this book very helpful. It is like a dictionary for sewing--every time I am not sure how to do something, I just flip through the book (it's arranged alphabetically) and look it up! There are simple illustrations to show me how.

Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.

Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.

"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91

Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?

The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:

An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.

The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:

1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life

The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.

Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.

I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.

Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.

Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18

I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.

Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

Love this whole series.......2007-08-05

_Spirit of the Bedroom_ introduced me to this author's series and I now have all of them. I leave them on the bedside table in our guestroom and houseguests comment on their photos and philosophy and easy-reading. I, personally, find them inspiring and make the daily task of removing clutter and "things" feel more like a positive uplift than a drudge job.

Stardusted memories.......2007-07-04

For those who were there, it brings back memories. For those who were not, "Big Biba" shows what you missed. For everyone, a look through this over-sized picture book will fill you with awe-- how could this have been???? But it was... Although, as a transatlantic visitor, I had mixed opinions about Big Biba (see reviews of "The Biba Experience"), it was still a wonder to behold. Time has done nothing to dilute that wonderment. In fact some of the most successful retail concepts (Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters for example) lightly but lovingly tiptoe down the Biba path. "Big Biba" is a classy 96 pages of heavyweight stock including a repro of the 16-page Opening Day Newspaper and a garment hangtag for use as a bookmark. Barbara Hulanicki herself writes the forward and doesn't dwell too much on the crash-and-burn aspect of the Biba phenomenom. As she shouldn't. Biba was obviously a product of its times, and now we have this lovely book for all time.

If you want to save yourself a few bucks, or more importantly, the few minutes of your life it'll take to realize this is pure, fictional trash, just go flick on Fox News. You'll get the same vomit inducing effect, without all the effort of having to read.

Poorly written books can often still be entertaining, but not in this case. Opinion is stated as fact, assumptions are made that no rationally thinking person could ever come to, and aspersions are cast out of what appears to be nothing more than a visceral hatred of Ms. O'Donnell.

The author of this book, for whatever reason, is intent on trashing O'Donnell, logic and fact are just collateral damage.

PURE TRASH, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Ro is nothing like the image this book or the mainstream media portray her as.......2007-07-03

This book is very poorly written and does not describe Ro's life in any circumstantiated way. It's just a just a bunch of ranting and raving without any worthwhile info thrown in. This is not a book of facts, this is a book of opportunistic lies.

I think the Enquirer is slipping. Is this the best they can do? A much better book might be about the pseudo-relevance of the National Enquirer; how they were once a media empire of the 70's and 80's, but turned into a total joke by the 90's and double-00's.

I must confess, I used to despise Rosie O'Donnell. I ate up books like this and watched the cable news programs that were only too glad to drag her through the mud.

But I learned that Ro did not con America. Do you want to know who is conning America? The American media companies have this country conned. They pick up stories and boy do they know how to run with em. The line separating yellow journalism and respected media outlets is erased. Maybe that's why the Enquirer is no longer relevant or worthwhile?

Rosie is nothing like the image this book or the mainstream media portray her as. On the contrary, Ro is loving, compassionate, sympathetic, and very generous and kind-hearted.

Don't take my word for it. Why don't you go to Ro's blog and hear what she has to say, you can even submit your own questions to her. Or read some of her books, Celebrity Detox: (the fame game) and Find Me.

Just like millions of people, Ro is my voice. If I could speak to Rosie I would thank her for her courage and for speaking the truth. Ro, you are my shero!
