Book Description

Autumn 1918. Rumors of peace are spreading across America, but spreading even faster are the first cases of Spanish influenza, whispering of the epidemic to come. Maureen Ross, well past a safe childbearing age, is experiencing a difficult pregnancy. Her husband, Troop -- cold and careless of her condition -- has battered her spirit throughout their marriage. Into this loveless ménage arrives Troop's niece, Mary Oliver, who has come to help Maureen in the last weeks of her confinement. Horrified by Troop's bullying, she realizes that her true duty is to protect her aunt.

As the influenza spreads and the death toll grows, Troop's spiteful behavior worsens. He terrorizes the household, but when Mary fights back he begins to go over the edge. Maureen rallies, releasing a stunning thunderstorm of confrontation and, ultimately, finding spiritual renewal.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

3 out of 5 stars dont get an audio version of this book!.......2007-09-24

I've read several other books by Gibbons and enjoyed them. I listened to this one on audio cd, and I have to completely agree with the reviewer who said Gibbons hire a reader. She often sounds like a schoolgirl being asked to "read out loud" with no interest in what the words actually are.

4 out of 5 stars Book worthwhile, but Gibbons should hire a reader.......2007-09-14

My rating of four stars is for the book itself, however, I have to say that the audio versions of her books are ruined by her reading of them. I've listened to two of her books which she read and not only is she a boring reader, but her lack of voice change makes it difficult to identify the speaker and scene changes. There are so many excellent readers available and its a shame one isn't used to read Gibbons.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful characters - deftly drawn.......2007-09-08

I like several of Gibbons books, but this one I loved. I listened to the audiobook version which was wonderful in itself and would suggest it. Gibbons puts a heart soul and mind into each character. They are fully drawn and quite wonderfully rich in details that make them come alive so that you see their faults and their triumphs. Super character detail. I personally haven't read that many books that draw on this time period. Loved the book and one of the few I would actually listen to/read again.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Prose and a Wonderful Story!.......2007-07-29

From the very first page of this book, I was entranced. I have read quite a few books by Kaye Gibbons but found this one on par w/ Ellen Foster in the strength of the voice of the narrator. There is humor, there is saddness, there are good characters and descpicable characters, the setting and events of the war era are well fleshedout..etc etc. I could go on. The novel is simply well written and well constructed. It reminded me of reading a more modern, and in many ways more satisfying, version of the Awakening by Kate Chopin.

If you like Kaye Gibbons this is a definite must read. If you are unfamiliar w/ her work think of this as a very well written novel of women, their friendships and a period piece. Definitely highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars We HAVE Come a Long Way.......2006-10-26

Unusual tale of the place of women in the United States in the early 1900's. An accurate understanding of male domination, manipulation, and control, expected, fostered and reinforced by US culture at that time in history. The strength of a young women coming into her own place in society and her impact on making change in the lives of others. Well written, interesting, thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Survivorship.......1999-10-15

I read this book a few months ago, and recently picked it up again to reread pages that intrigued me: what I was interested in was Delana Mae's ability to assess her surroundings, contemplate, act, and survive. McCoy writes clearly and with passion. Her language, rhythm, pacing, and characterizations make this novel a brilliant work. I am less concerned about absolute plot (resolution, etc.) because I do see a character change, and I do become, increasingly, even as I re-read, more interested in the fine details of McCoy's portrait of what it takes for the human spirit to endure. If you like art, are not necessarily into commercialism (perfect plot and tying up every thin string), I recommend trying to get your hands on this book. McCoy is funny and wise. Be assurred that under her genius humor there is a beautiful, deep dark line running throughout. McCoy's characters, particularly Delana Mae, are absolutely unforgettable.

In the famed romantic tradition that only Barbara Delinsky can deliver, you'll meet emotion-packed characters who make you forget whatever it was you were doing before you picked up Coast Road. In this story, workaholic Jack McGill is brought to his knees when he learns that his ex-wife Rachel is in a coma after a car accident. When he rushes to her side to be a dutiful father to his children, he is met with abrasive verbal abuse not only from his children, but also from Rachel's best friends.

By the time the doctors tell him they don't know how long Rachel will be in the coma, Jack has reacquainted himself with his children, and fond memories have surfaced of his ex-wife and her creative artistic talent. Through Rachel's best friend, Katherine, Jack learns about a secret Rachel had hidden from him during the days they were married. The secret, revealed through artwork, is one of the many factors that thrust Jack into "introspection mode." He reevaluates his life, digging deep into his heart's desires, and decides to quit his job and stay at Rachel's side, even if she never wakes up.

Coast Road deals with some very difficult subjects, such as miscarriage, divorce, traveling husbands, breast cancer, and the ramifications of living in a coma. However, once you get past the research exposition and the bantering, you'll laugh and cry (a lot) at what this once-separated family goes through. Delinsky paints vivid pictures of Rachel, who remains in a coma for about 99 percent of the book, but you'll see that it sometimes takes a life-threatening accident to rekindle the fires of love. --Candy Paape

        Book Description

Coast Road. Where life's greatest gifts come to us by accident.

Barbara Delinsky has always had a gift for creating tales of extraordinary emotional power and depth. Now this New York Times bestselling author of Three Wishes surpasses herself once again in a novel that takes readers on a journey as richly textured, colorful, and poignant as the northern California landscape in which the book is set.

Rachel Keats and Jack McGill were artists, deeply in love when they married, until the rush of life took its toll. After ten years of marriage, they divorced and went their separate ways. Jack stayed in San Francisco. Rachel moved with their two young daughters to Big Sur.

Six years later, an alarming middle-of-the-night phone call demands that Jack put aside his own busy life and career as a leading architect to rush to his ex-wife's hospital bed. While she lies lifeless, Jack maintains a bedside vigil and finds himself getting to know Rachel better than he ever did -- through their daughters, her friends, and, even more revealingly, through her art. Meanwhile, the beauty and grace of the redwood canyon where she has made their home also work their own special alchemy upon Jack. He begins to see Rachel, his daughters, and the story of his marriage with new eyes.

Coast Road celebrates those things in life that matter most -- the kinship of neighbors, the companionship of friends, and the irreplaceable time spent with children and family. In this masterful new novel, Barbara Delinsky depicts with exquisite accuracy the ties that bind each of us to those people and places we hold most dear.

1 out of 5 stars If you don't have anything else to read..........2006-08-15

I happened to read this book because it was at the beach house we rented for vacation last week. The description made the book seem interesting, but it was very one-dimensional & the characters were so stereotyped that they are not believable.

For Rachel to have loved (still love) Jack so much, she found it very easy to suddenly pack up & leave him. Also, the writer should have thought out a better way to communicate for Rachel - Katherine seemed very harsh & abrasive. I also found it hard to believe that Rachel was such a loner in the city, but quite the joiner since moving to Big Sur. Nothing really flowed together right to make the story believable.

If you don't have anything else to read, give it a try, but don't buy it.

        5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2005-11-23

Delinsky has a way of making normal/ordinary life occurances extraordinary! She has "painted" her characters so well that I could relate to them as if I had known them all my life. The issues the characters face are common. But their reactions are not! Emotional, passionate, and redemptive... a great read!

1 out of 5 stars Slow and unbelievable.......2005-03-16

Although I don't read romance, I gave this a try at the advice of friends. While there is a plot with some merit, the characters are all caricatures - one person, one personality trait. One daughter is sweet; one is rebellious. Rachel is beautiful; Jack is selfish. Even the grandmothers are one-dimensional; one is a frump, one is a shallow socialite.

Their actions are not believable. Rachel couldn't find a single friend or anything to do in the city, but in the middle of nowhere she's the center of the whole community? She loved her husband so much but she couldn't even tell him about his own child? Jack is so clueless about teenagers that he couldn't see trouble in his daughter's plans to spend the night with a bunch of kids he didn't know? Katherine is so "open" that she needs to rudely lecture Jack the first ten times they meet? And he takes it - obviously feeling that he deserves this rude behavior? This is a male-bashing female fantasy in which the evil man needs to be redeemed by becoming, essentially, female. The fact that so many reviews are positive about this book makes me think that a lot of women think people should act this way, or do in real life. Come on, sisters! Men are different than women. Let's look for some more dimensional characters in our entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Hush Little Baby, Don't You Cry ... .......2005-03-11

COAST ROAD being the 6th novel I'd read of BD's work, I had begun to notice that her fiction creates a state of mind similar to what one of my readers (a US Marine) described about my work, "I was reading and reading, and all of a sudden I realized I had forgotten I was reading and felt I was just thinking my own thoughts."

Delinsky's fiction is so naturally and seamlessly real that I had, with COAST ROAD, decided to quit trying to pick out what works about her writing techniques, and to allow myself to just "be there," ironically slipping into a peaceful dream-like luxury similar to that of resting in a coma along with Rachael, receiving rather than responding, while her family and friends shower her with the balming presence of every variety of perfect love.

Almost as cathartic as the regeneration of the soul-link between Jack and Rachael was the beautiful, believable transformation of 15-year-old Samantha from a highly annoying super brat into a sensitive, appealingly gutsy young woman. What I admire most about this novel, though, is that it is told from a man's point-of-view, exposing simply and gently how tremendous emotional growth could occur in even the most Macho Male.

Even shored up by 5 previous Delinsky novels, I was concerned that a story about a woman in a coma would have to be sad and depressing, possibly even boring at times. This book was anything but. Sensitive, yes, sad but redeeming, and intensely engrossing in a way of deep, pensive satisfaction. It's another landmark winner of a book.

5 out of 5 stars Trying to See it From another Prespective...........2004-07-15

In this story, Jack McGill, who has choosen his career over his family numerous times gets a wake up call when he discovers that his ex-wife Rachel is in a coma after a car accident. Jack never stopped loving Rachel, and for the first time in his life he puts his career on hold and goes to Rachels bedside, and to his two daughters. He discovers both his daughter and his wife are not the people he always thought them to be and that he somehow "missed the forest for the trees". With verbal abuse as well as a lot of guidance from Rachel's new friends, and his own daughters, Jack begins to reevaluate his life.

Coast Road touches on many different topics, such as miscarriage, divorce, traveling husbands, breast cancer, as well as what it is like for those around a coma patient, but don't let that deter you. This is a well written rewarding read.

        Book Description

What would road rage in Beverly Hills look like? From the whimsical perspective of The Other Coast creator Adrian Raeside, it would involve a prim-and-proper hurling of a jar of Grey Poupon at the offending driver. The Other Coast: Road Rage in Beverly Hills is the first collection of Adrian Raeside's strip featuring his off-kilter view of contemporary life. Raeside's lighthearted look at everything from culture, politics, fashion, society, and life in general is both insightful and hilarious. Whether it's taking a clever poke at our obsession with wireless phones, our inability to maintain a workout program, or the witty banter of married life, The Other Coast is a bastion of original thinking, wry wit, and out-loud laughs.Much of the humor comes at the expense of Toulose, the eccentric screenwriter, and his cause-seeking wife, Vicki. But the strip also features a colorful cast of repair people, kids, contractors, tech-support goons, agents, pets, and much more. Those enjoying strips that provide more than the "same 'ol schtick" are sure to relish a visit to The Other Coast, where folks aren't deep enough to be shallow.

In the depths of the internet, a new form of life is unleashed. Silent and invisible, the only hint of its existence is an ordinary-seeming computer virus, which the human race regards as a mere nuisance. But this virus is unlike anything mankind has seen before . . . this virus can evolve! As it explodes across the internet, a new plague begins to take control of the global communications network. A secret battle rages within computers around the world, as different strains of the virus compete for resources. With most humans still blissfully unaware of the danger, the digital life undergoes a breakthrough. Just as biological evolution leapt forward when single-celled organisms evolved into multi-cellular ones, a beneficial mutation allows one strain of the virus to become “multi-computer.” At the speed of light, billions of computers snap together to form a massive digital brain, and the Goddess Minerva is born. And she is powerful. Living within their computers, she begins to know mankind intimately. She learns the human's strengths and weaknesses - and she understands the serious threat that they pose to her very survival. Visit mankind's struggle against the most powerful force it has ever encountered, as humans come face-to-face with the offspring of their own technology in The Minerva Virus.

5 out of 5 stars great hi tech thriller .......2006-05-23

He announced last year to his hacking peers that he had an IDEA for a supervirus like none ever seen hit the Internet. Over the next 365 days, Jupiter works on Project Minerva and now feeling more like Zeus as he launches his Goddess on a suspecting world.

In San Jose First Bit Protection computer-virus security expert Quinton Grant and the President's daughter biochemist Stephanie Daniels realize separately that the latest supervirus Minerva is more powerful than even MyDoom and doing something never seen before. It is changing into something else. If the evolution continues, Minerva will affirm Darwin's survival of the fittest theory as an independent sentient Internet essence that could devastate the information age and send humanity back into CHAOS. Minerva lives simultaneously in every computer in the world. She controls anything that depends on computer technology. As leaders become frightened over their loss of power, Minerva vows to serve all of mankind. While Quinton and Stephanie team up to prevent Minerva from succeeding others try to kill the courageous pair.

THE MINERVA VIRUS is a great hi tech thriller that grips the audience from Jupiter's first email and accelerates from there as Minerva evolves while opponents rally to stop her and others to protect her (as always the world is divided between the haves and have-nots). The lead human couple is a fascinating pairing of brilliant people as Quinton works anti-virus remedies and Stephanie conducts research into artificial intelligence; each admire the creation and have doubts about stopping Minerva, who may be just the thing for the better good of all humanity though they also fear Lord Action's warning that "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"; Minerva is absolute power.

I just picked up this book on a whim, as the synopsis reminded me of the other two books. Once I started, I wasn't able to put it down until I finished it several hours later. An amazing read!

4 out of 5 stars A New Age Terror Tale, Guaranteed a Page Turner AND it is Educational! .......2006-02-03

Thinking that Brian Schuster's debut novel was just another SciFi thriller, this reader could not have been more wrong in that dismissal. Picking up THE MINERVA VIRUS is hazardous to your time as once started, it is nearly impossible to put it down - it is just that well written!

For those whose computers are integral with both business and personal lives this story about the worst nightmare of computer virus/worm ideas will be fascinating reading. Brian Shuster is so well versed in computer technology that his unraveling of this tale of terror feels like the original Orson Welles radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, taking the public who had grown dependent on the radio news by shock as though the incident were really happening at that moment: panic throughout the country. That is just how tightly scripted is Shuster's writing. He adds to this luster of fear the technique of composing parts of the novel as Instant Messaging, emails, blogs etc all of which will feel completely credible to the computer generation.

For those of us who use the computer but have limited knowledge about the potential threats and harm that viruses and worms can do, information passively absorbed when passed on to us by our Security devices, then this novel will not only succeed as a suspense thriller, but also will serve to educate us to a higher appreciation of the power of the Pandora's Box that the computer discovery has become. Shuster writes so clearly that he leaves no one behind no matter how knowledgeable or how insecure the individual reader might be.

The other aspect of Shuster's mutating Minerva Virus story that shows the writer has even more knowledge than technical information is the introduction of biochemistry and genetic manipulation, with all the permutations that 'bit' suggests. And to be completely thorough in having a story really terrify us he includes the manner in which government can not only become involved in the mire of viral destruction or invasion of hard drives, but can also enter the manipulation and influence possible world outcomes.

The actual details of the plot are well explained on the product page. But what is not explained is that in addition to a unique and truly frightening idea for a story, Shuster writes so well that the characters involved are wholly credible and well integrated into the development of the novel - this coming from a reader who is not particularly keen on Science Fiction books. THE MINERVA VIRUS goes beyond SciFi and becomes simply a fine read, one that is truly a page turner in the best sense of the term. Brian Shuster has introduced a whole new genre of writing and with the evidence in this first novel, he has a lot more to say. Recommended reading for all types of fiction lovers. Book Description

Limoges boxes are among the most collected and treasured objects in the world. Yet few people know the story behind the box. From their beginnings as the snuffboxes and status symbols of the French elite to their modern role as delightful, fun, and personal collectibles, these little porcelain containers have a history full of intrigue and innovation. The Art of the Limoges Box is a witty and in-depth guide to these stories-and a handbook to finding and appreciating the best boxes available.

Today's Limoges boxes come in an almost endless variety of shapes and designs, from hilariously whimsical to historic to simply beautiful. Nancy du Tertre, herself a designer of these porcelain boxes, helps readers pick out the best new pieces, teaches how to avoid cheap knock-offs, and illuminates the traces of the past in today's creations. This book is just as essential for collectors of the antique boxes, which range from simple, unadorned containers to jewel-encrusted treasures. Throughout, detailed color photographs bring these wonderful boxes to life.

            Book Description

The story of porcelain making and decorating in Limoges, France, is a tale of artists and potters; kings and an emperor; a revolution; and the emergence of a great industry. Limoges comes to life in over 1,100 photographs of porcelain and porcelain marks made over the past 100 plus years, concentrating on pieces dating from the 1860s to the present day. Along with a discussion of the manufacturing and decorating of both fine porcelain pieces and boxes, there is a full section dedicated to Limoges companies and their manufacturing and decorating marks. Captions include price guides. A fine index turns a lovely illustrated book into a valuable reference tool. All the photos of porcelain and boxes are in color.

This is a great book for preschoolers and older kids. My six year old loved. She can read, understand and follow the instructions herself. Almost all the projects are made from items you would have on hand in your house (chop sticks might be the only thing you won't have.) Great book!

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Attention Tokyo Billionaires - This is the book for you!.......2007-01-16

I feel that this book is mis-categorized and inappropriatley titled. The description alleges that this book will provide "practical advise, the book guides readers through the steps, tricks and techniques needed to create a multitude of lighting atmospheres and unique decorative features for both interior and exterior spaces." This is not at all true. Unless you are a millionaire, Japanese boutique hotel designer, or avant-garde eccentric this book is not for you.

The first section provides examples of lighting schemes that are in no way practical - i.e. fancy built-ins from the homes of the very-well-to-do, a bathroom drenched in harsh neon-red light (I thought bathrooms were supposed to be soothing, not rage-inducing). The next section is basically a list of resumes from lighting design firms that would cost more to hire than the cost of my home.
This is followed by what amounts to a shopping cataolg of extremely over-priced, unavailable lighting pieces.

I was looking for ways to improve the lighting in my home, not by flying over some London-based designer, or spending $8000 on a chandelier the size of my couch. In addition to being inexcusably impractical, the book is poorly edited and produced. There are numerous descriptions for which there are no accompanying photos or illustrations; many descriptions accompany the wrong photo; and in one instance a sentence was cut off right in the middle, no punctutation or completion of thought.

If you cant read, but want to see pretty pictures of expensive stuff, buy this book.

              Book Description

This rich treasury of Art Nouveau designs will inspire and enrich your decorative arts projects. The images were originally presented in the 1890s for use in home interiors, ceramics, textiles, stationary, stained glass, and ironwork. Now, even easier to use, they are in both print and digital forms, referenced by page numbers. 775 graphics, 500 in color, are at your fingertips. Specifically created more than a century ago to appeal to an emerging aesthetic called Art Nouveau, or New Art (derived from "La Maison de l'Art Nouveau," a gallery for interior design that opened in Paris in 1896), this style became an international fad by the early 20th-century. Art Nouveau is characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric, "whiplash" curves that are highly appealing again today. With this wealth of beautiful designs, you can add an authentic antique touch to today's graphics with modern technology. 9" x 12" 500 color and 275 b/w graphics
