Book Description
A rainy day, a slippery street. A skidding car collides with a motor scooter ridden by Angela, a fifteen-year-old girl. Gravely injured, she’s brought to the hospital where her father, Timoteo, is a surgeon. As his daughter lies near death, the handsome, cultivated, eminently respectable Timoteo unpacks a sordid burden of sin and guilt he has long borne in silence.
Fraught with sexual obsession, degradation, and devotion, his confession is the tale of a man who for his whole life has been “afraid to live”—with one passionate exception. Silently addressing Angela, Timoteo bares his soul, and the events of the year before her birth open like a wound.
As Timoteo’s tale begins, he’s driving from the city to the beach house where his beautiful, accomplished wife, Elsa, is waiting for him. Car trouble forces him to make a detour into a dingy suburb, and there he meets Italia—unbeautiful, unpolished, working-class—who awakens a part of him he scarcely recognizes. Disenchanted with his stable life, he seizes the chance to act without consequences, and what ensues is startling and savage. Is it rape? Or something mutual, animal, completely new to him? Returning again and again to Italia’s dim hovel, he finds himself faced with a choice: a life of passion with Italia, or a life of comfort and predictability with Elsa.
“Suddenly, driven by an absurd rebellious impulse, you look for the bones of the man you would have liked to be,” Timoteo explains to his unconscious daughter, as if asking forgiveness for preferring the passionate life he glimpsed so briefly.
In vivid, intense, masterful prose, Margaret Mazzantini has crafted a tale that electrifies from start to finish, drawing us deep down into the darkness of primal passion.

Excellent novel - human, touching, beautiful........2007-08-21
I can't remember the last time I wrote one of these reviews. This novel was just that gripping and beautiful. It is infused with details of love, with poignant smells, and it promises to break your heart. If you have ever loved and lost someone, this novel will resonate with you for a very long time.
Dark, depressing, pro-rape, horrible.......2007-07-31
I can see how some readers would enjoy this as a trek into the mind of a sick, unemotional rapist and his victim. But as a woman, I am in shock that a woman would write this. It's about a man who is married to a beautiful woman and his daughter is in the hospital. He recalls to her the story of a day when his car broke down and he finds this woman who lets him borrow her phone. He brutally rapes her then goes home. The goes back...and does it again. Are you serious? Is there anything positive to gain from this? This book is pro-rape, pro-abuse, anti woman, even anti-man if you are honest. A horrible book.
Chilling story, but nevertheless Brilliant.......2006-01-21
The main character tells his daughter who lies in a coma his story. The story of his most intimate feelings towards different people. Obvious his love for his daughter and his fear she might die. The fact that over the years the love towards her mother has gone. And most of all its the story of the obscure relationship for an unknown woman he picked up somewhere, and the graphic account of the raw sex he has with her.
And after a while there is a change in the horrifyingly selfish abuse of the main character towards this unknown woman.
This book is chilling, tender and loving at the same time.
It has in the meantime been travelling my circle of friends. Each and everyone finds it overwhelming. This is a must read for sure.
Deeply unbelievable although compelling.......2005-09-26
"Don't Move" must have sold to the publisher on the strength of its first 40 pages and the outline, because it gets off to a rattling good start. However, the book is driven by the increasingly widespread contempt for maleness that pervades the literary and movie world and its plot is hardly believable.
Married to a strong and controlling feminist, a surgeon secretly rebels against her by repeatedly raping an isolated working-class female in her miserable home under a viaduct next to the Gypsies. Instead of being repelled by his own behaviour, seeking help and getting over it, he convinces himself he is passionately in love with this non-person.
Indeed, the author takes no care to make his love-object come to life, and, knowing her so little, we are left unmoved by her abortion and subsequent death from complications. It is the narrator's immense egotism that compels us to read on incredulously, as he systematically trashes the life of his beautiful, successful and feminist wife and gets away with it.
The narrator's motive for telling his story, the imminent death of his 15 year-old daughter whom he did not know well either, is powerful if bizarre, and is told kaleidoscopically in a complicated series of flashbacks which is not entirely controlled.
For example, when he has cut open his lover's bowels to look at the septicimia, he at first concludes that it is caused by her abortion. However, the author rapidly realises that the timeline of her story does not allow that, and the narrator quickly---and over-conveniently---assumes that his lover has had another abortion since then. It's hard to control a long chain of flashbacks and here we hear the cogs squeaking.
This is another story with a villain for a hero, a worrying trend for anyone who cares about men. He has no friends, his only male relationship being a cynical liaison with a spoilt colleague. His wife always initiates sex. One can imagine him as one of those Italian only children who dominate a household during their childhood. He does not read books, cares about no ideas, has no political beliefs, does not love his wife, and only realises he loves his daughter when she is dying in hospital.
Of course, we realise that he is plagued by profound guilt over his appalling behaviour at the time of her birth. He feels instinctively that his misbehaviour is being punished by fate. Thus he engages in a long confession of his sins, although there is no priest present.
Ultimately, this novel is a triumph of the storytelling art, because its narrative skill overcomes all the unpleasantness and absurdity of the basic material. If she can produce more credible plots, and more likeable heroes, Mazzantini has great promise as a novelist.
Perverted Trash.......2005-07-08
This is by far the trashiest book I have ever read. From cover to cover it is composed of the most graphic, vulgar descriptions of lewd sexual acts. The intent is that we have sympathy for an adulterer who (repeatedly) rapes a woman behind his wife's back and then forces her to get an abortion when she becomes pregnant. Apparently, the aim of the book is objectify the immoral so that we will side with the character in the book who is the worst of humanity. We are supposed to have sympathy because his real life was so "dull" that he was "forced" to seek "love" elsewhere. Don't read this ilk. I only did because it was required for school.

Wow!!!!.......2003-09-27
Roma Lombard is the younger sister of Ben McCabe's best friends, Gray and Blade(Heart of Midnight and Blade's Lady) Lombard. When Roma is shot at Gray asks Ben to protect her. Neither expect the instant attraction between them. This book was wonderful. Sexy scenes, a hunky hero, and an independant heroine. Marry McCabe was actually the first book I read by Fiona Brand and I loved it so much I rushed out and ordered the others from this series. They were all great. She reminds me of Linda Howard's early works(Mackenzie's come to mind)and Suzanne Brockmann's TDD series. I will be anxiously awaiting more books from this author!!! Way to go Fiona!!
Wonderful! I LOVED this book!!.......2002-03-26
I LOVED this book! Fiona Brand is a talented writer and her heroes are in a class of their own. Romantic, brooding, protective and so SEXY they sizzle off the pages of her books! I liked how the characters in this book tied to characters in all her other books, it was really great seeing how all the previous happily-ever-afters turned out. I can see how some reviewers might be lost with the backstory, but I've read all her books and already knew the running thread tying the stories together. If you're lost hunt down those previous books--they're more than worth the time! Many authors out there can technically craft a well-written book, but Fiona Brand is one of the few romance writers who can create characters, particularly heroes, with such style they linger long after that wonderful last page. She's definitely a writer for that "keeper shelf!"
Wow!.......2001-10-17
Fiona Brand is really great! She's one of my new favorites. She makes you fall for the hero and sympathize with the heroine. She's also one of the most sensuous writers I've found in the Silhoutte line.
The plot of this story is not that origional - rich girl in danger falls in love with body guard - if you've read much romance you're familiar with that one. Fiona Brand just did such a good job that this was really a great story.
Another winner from Fiona Brand.......2001-09-04
Fiona Brand is a New Zealand author that writes for Silhouette Intimate Moments line and she is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. She writes about men that are alphas similar to that of Linda Howard and her latest is no exception.
Ben McCabe used to work for Special Air Service, an elite security team. He is entrusted with guarding the sister of two of his best friends from that team. He figures the sister, Roma Lombard, to be a spoiled rich brat. He soon learns his mistake and also finds himself attracted to her.
Roma Lombard is no wimpy female. Someone is taking shots at her and she knows how to fight back and feels she doesn't need a bodyguard. But like Ben, she has an intense attraction that soon explodes in lust.
Their love scenes sizzle (I would rate this book as highly sensual for a series book) and as a couple, they have that spark that makes you want to root for them to live happily ever after. The action and suspense is gripping. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down. I loved this story and cannot wait for the next story from Fiona Brand.
Excellent characterizations! Recommended.......2001-08-31
After the shooting, Roma rushed to save her friend's life, all to aware of her vulnerability as she kneels beside his body. While the threat of violence is no novelty, never has she been left feeling so powerless. She knows that safety is only an illusion. Her family's wealth, high media profile, and business connections insure danger. Indeed, living years under siege has molded Roma into a formidable woman. A crack shot and fiercely independent, she also respects danger. Yet, Roma desires ordinary. She wants an ordinary life with an ordinary family and ordinary goals. Single father Ben, her new bodyguard, represents everything she wants but her social position denies.
Hotshot security consultant Ben McCabe accepts the job simply because his friend called in a favor. Gray's baby sister needs babysitting after the attempt on her life. Ben's already had a crash course in rich and spoiled and doesn't wish to repeat it. But Roma isn't what he expected; in fact, she's an enigma, which still means trouble. The second he sees Roma, Ben feels off balance. This woman has uncharted depths; surprisingly, he wants to explore them all. But he must pose as her boyfriend, an intimate relationship that draws him even closer than marriage might, to protect her life. Emotions and attraction must take a back seat to business.
Set in New Zealand, MARRYING MCCABE by Fiona Brand presents first class danger. Unfortunately, the heroine's scars occur long before the time frame of the book, leaving the reader outside of much of the action. While the vivid descriptions recreate the painful memories well, so much description goes into the past that the reader can't help but wish the novel had been much longer and written to include the past in a more fluid manner. Despite this weakness, this reviewer truly enjoyed this passionate, strong heroine who can shoot, lend first aid, and still move in the best of circles. The sexy, protective hero doesn't overshadow her own strengths, lending the book an unusual strength in a genre too dependent on weak heroines. Recommended.

Book Description
Dark Horse delivers another fantastic collection of rare classics from a comics legend! Russ Manning, famous for his spectacular work on the Tarzan newspaper strips of the late sixties, brought fans his "Tarzan of the Future" in Magnus, Robot Fighter. While the original comic series lasted only twenty-one issues, Manning's creation has survived generations, influencing countless science fiction artists and writers to this day. Fans of Alex Raymond, Mac Raboy, or Wally Wood should not miss this beautifully bound hardcover, the latest addition to Dark Horse's line of science fiction comics classics.

Great! But reproduction could have been better..........2005-09-07
Others have mentioned the problem with the reprints, and I agree - I almost returned it, but ya know, you'll never find these anywhere else. I still have the original issues 14-21, and can attest to the brilliance of the original comic book artwork & color, which is why I ordered the 3 books. I am guessing there were digital scanning issues? Or was it just in the printing process? Who knows? Who cares! It's still great and worth it...but Dark Horse should redo them and send we Amazonians complimentary new versions when they're done - everyone agree? Anyway - the message of Magnus is to not trust machines, and it's never been more true than today.
Dark Horse Does it Again.......2005-05-08
You could pay hundreds of dollars for a pristine copy of volume one of Russ Manning's 1963 Gold Key sci-fi comic, Magnus Robot Fighter. Or you could get this beautiful, color, hardbound Dark Horse edition of the first seven comics, not for the retail $50, but for a much lower Amazon price. Baby Boomers will remember Manning's ground- breaking classic, which everywhere raised the bar for sci-fi comics, but newer readers who may have discovered Magnus through the many later comics and graphic novels editions, will also be delighted to discover the original source.
Manning is known for his work on Tarzan and other comics, and his art in Magnus is a delight to the eye, with a sweeping painterly style reminiscent of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon comics. Unheard of at the time, he was also allowed to sign his comics for Gold Key, the later comics imprint of Western Publishing, which had also published Dell comics.
NorthAm, the continent-spanning city of the 41st century, is completely run by, and completely dependent on, robots which obey a variant of Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics. Forseeing this dangerous trend, a Yoda-like robot named A1 (does that sound like AI?) raises an orphan human named Magnus to fight robots should the need arise. He trains his body as a well-oiled machine until he can deliver karate chops with "steel smashing strength." For various reasons, some robots turn against humans and try to destroy NorthAm, often in the employ of a human dictator, and Magnus is called out as a man on a mission. In the style of early 'sixties sci-fi, Manning always closed with a moral, that we must never become too dependent on technology, and that it is meant to be the servant of man.
Manning created a host of intriguing robot designs (some of them resemble Ideal's Zeroids), and this book includes all seven original Gold Key covers (without the text), as well as a brief bio of Manning and Foreword by Mike Royer. Now when so many comics and cartoons are spun off from licensed properties, it's amazing to think that in his designs and stories for Magnus, Manning created an original hero and unique millieu that are still inspiring today.
An Excellent Traditional Hero.......2005-03-31
This is a great addition to any collection! Some say today that Magnus the Robot Fighter lacks the darkness and the depth of modern(ist) "heroes". However, I say that Magnus stands way above what passes for modern(ist) "heroes" in that the protagonists of the stories are true and honourable and are not mere scape goats for those who today like to pretend they are just being "human" when they lie, cheat, steal and decieve others.
Magnus the Robot Fighter is a role model that is NEEDED for the young of today - and a very refreshing reminder of how things SHOULD be and of how we SHOULD strive for the ultimate good.
As to be specific about the reprint - I would have liked to have seen the ads and the full covers reprinted in the book but the quality is good (even though in the early 60's the quality of the comic itself could have been printed a bit better ...). It will make a great addition to any bookshelf and will bring back some nostalgia to those who remember this fantastic series.
I would have gladly given 5 stars and I believe Magnus the Robot Fighter series is definately worth MORE than 5 stars but I'm rating this specific edition.
Too bad Valiant tried to change Magnus into a modern(ist) hero ... maybe they'd still be in business ...
Silver-Age reproductions strike a cord.......2005-02-17
I am an avid collector of comics and started collecting the Marvel Masterworks when they first came out. DC followed suit and now Dark Horse is jumping on the bandwagon. Marvel and DC have lots of history and should concentrate on their own bodies of work, but it is nice to see someone step up to the plate and take on the lesser known publishers of the Silver-Age (although technically, DC did it first with T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents).
Dark Horse does this edition justice. For those of us who were not alive to see these in the original release, it is great to see Manning's comics on the printed page (and at a fraction of the cost of the individual original books). Manning was a pioneer, do yourself a favor and pick up this book, I was glad I did.
Squeee! Magnus is back!.......2005-01-03
As most people know, DC Comics has had their archive program (hardcover reprints of older comics) for over a decade now. Not only has DC archived their big guns characters (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), but they've also gotten their lesser characters (Sgt. Rock, Doom Patrol), the characters they've acquired (Blackhawk, Shazam) AND characters they've licenced for the simple purpose of archiving them (the Spirit, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents). Given this nice bit of diversity, I took it for granted that at some point, DC would also get around to archiving the characters published by Western/Gold Key. Imagine my surprise when it was announced that Gold Key's work would be archived, NOT by DC, but by Dark Horse!
Not that I'm complaining, of course. It's great to see "Magnus: Robot Fighter, 4000 AD" and "Doctor Solar: Man of the Atom" in some format. And Dark Horse isn't so unlikely. This is a company that built itself on licenced properties (rather like Western), and has itself begun a variety of reprint programs. So, they've entered the arena. Good for them.
Like most readers my age, my first exposure to these characters, including Magnus, came in the early 1990s, when they were acquired and published by the now-defunct Valiant Comics. I did get on board somewhat late, when the whole of the Valiant line was beginning its slouch towards despair, so to speak. I did enjoy "Magnus" for a while. However, my decision to read this Archive volume has more to do with my interest in Silver Age comics. I am quite pleased that I did.
For those coming in late, Magnus is a denizen of the year 4000 AD (or AD 4000, as is correct), a time where all of the citizens of the continent-size city North Am have become complacent and entirely too dependent on robots. Raised by the very first robot, Magnus was taught how to fight evil robots, his body honed until his strength could smash steel. And for the seven issues contained in this volume, that's exactly what Magnus does, battling corrupt robots or corrupt humans who use robots for their own nefarious purposes. At the same time, he forms a tight bond with Leeja Clane, daughter of a senator, herself sick of robot control.
The big draw here of course is that great artwork by Russ Manning. The line-work is absolutely clean, tight, and vibrant. Further, the designs of the robots, the costumes of the humans, and the city itself, demonstrate the vibrancy and imagination Manning possessed.
Manning wasn't a slouch in the writing department, either. Each story exhibits an excellent grasp of pacing and drama, as well as ingenuity. The villains are also legitimate threats. H-8, the corrupt robot controller of the pol-robs (police robots), Mekman, the human who wants to be a robot, and Xyrkol, Magnus's most persistent foe, all present complex challenges that draw the reader in, as we watch and wonder how Magnus will inevitably beat them. It's difficult to zero in on one favorite story. All are excellent examples of why this series attained its classic stature.
However, due to thematic concerns, there is a certain of repetition in the stories. Manning's central theme was wariness of technology. Thus, Magnus often intones dire warnings about how lazy man has become, how dependent on robots man is, and how man should always be prepared for the day when the robots revolt. The stories, naturally, follow these predictions, as Magnus battles malfunctioning robots, infected robots, and megalomaniacal robots. It's fortunate that Manning new how to write an entertaining story, because the formula might have worn thin.
Someone else has griped about the quality of the reprint. Granted, the colors are not as vibrant as they could have been. However, I'm not sure if that's Dark Horse's fault. Having looked through some of the original comics, I don't think Gold Key had great coloring process to begin with (compared with DC, and, much later, Marvel). Granted, Dark Horse could have re-colored the series. Still, that's really a minor quibble, and in no way impacted my enjoyment of the series. If nothing else, the original covers, nearly all painted art, are included, and like most GK covers, are all gorgeous.
Dark Horse has planned only three volumes, encompassing Manning's work. This seems limited, since this series did continue beyond Manning (not much, but still). I'm also looking forward to the "Doctor Solar" hardcover, and the further volumes of "Magnus". Terrific stuff.
Book Description
Like Becoming the Compassion Buddha, this is another of Lama Yeshe's examinations of key Tantric deity practices in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Common to all four traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, the practice of Vajrasattva is used to purify obstacles to spiritual development, negative karma, and illness. Lama Yeshe, the inspirational teacher who strongly influenced the development of Buddhism in the West, found that the practice of Vajrasattva brought dramatic results for his Western students. Becoming Vajrasattva is a complete guide to this purification practice, providing instruction on the method, commentary on the traditional texts, and insight into tantra. Also included is an entire section of complete retreat instructions—required reading for anyone undertaking a meditation retreat in the Tibetan tradition.
Customer Reviews:
Not idle reading.......2005-10-25
This book is an advanced work for experienced Buddhist practitioners in the Tibetan tradition. I doubt that other readers would get much out of it. It is like a cookbook, you have to do what it says if you want to satisfy yourself. And if you want to cook, you need the utensils. In this case you need to be studying with a lama, have received initiation and have some experience practicing in order to work with this book.
The teacher of the text is in the Gelug tradition. I am a Kagyu, so that colors what I say. The author is very formal and rigorous. He makes much of what I perceive as minor matters (don't move your meditation cushion, keep it in the same place throughout your retreat). So I filter out some of what he says as not essential.
I was practicing Vajrasattva when I bought this book and I wanted something to keep the practice fresh. This provided it.
If you are practicing Vajrasattva, this book will be very helpful. There are also some things in this book that could be helpful to other practitioners.
Important and Inspiring Book for Vajrayanists.......2004-11-20
Although not a household name among American Buddhists, Lama Yeshe should really go down in history as one of the chief teachers responsible for transmitting Buddhism to the West. He managed to find a voice for this ancient tradition of Tibetan Buddhism that makes it accessible, inspiring, and transformational to contemporary Westerners. This is evident in the several excellent volumes that have been put forth by his student, Nick Ribush, and Wisdom Publications, including this book on Vajrasattva practice.
Purification practice is essential for students of Tibetan Buddhism, and one of the most important tantric practices for this is that of Vajrasattva. This book contains excellent teachings on this very important practice. (It will probably not be very useful to those who have not received empowerment into this practice, or who are not practicising tantra). The emphasis of the book is actually on Heruka Vajrasattva, but I believe it can be of benefit to anyone practising Vajrasattva.
Readers who enjoy this book should also pick up a copy of Lama Yeshe's "Introduction to Tantra", which is phenomenal.

1. Traditional English Style
2. Country Style
3. Loft Style
4. Oriental Style

8. Ethnic
9. American Country
10. Coastal

Book Description
American actress Mercedes McCambridge is an Academy Award-winning star of radio, television, film, and the stage, active in all four entertainment mediums between 1936 and 1991. Publicly, she was active in politics, a lecturer at several colleges, and an important activist in the fight against alcoholism; privately, she suffered from divorces, miscarriages, suicide attempts, the death of her only child, and a hard-won battle with her own alcoholism. From roles on such radio shows as Lights Out! at 19 to her starring role in Neil Simon's play Lost in Yonkers at 75, this biography both reveals her personal life and career and gives insight into an important period of show business history.
Part I is a full biography from McCambridge's birth in Illinois in 1916 to her 1998 appearance at the Academy Awards. Part II gives McCambridge's radio, television, film, and theatre performances, each entry listing the name of the show, name of the character, dates, other performers, directors, and an indication of which were sustained short- or long-running roles and which single performances on a radio or television series. Research is drawn from books, periodicals, and personal interviews with McCambridge's peers.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful biography.......2005-04-20
This is a very well written, wonderful biography of an incredible actress's life and career. Mr. Lackmann made the Academy Award winning, Tony nominated actress, Mercedes McCambridge, live again in this book, which covers her career on the radio (Big Sister, Lights Out, Inner Sanctum Mysteries, I Love A Mystery, Bulldog Drummong, Guiding Light, Studio One, etc) in films (All The King's Men, Giant, Suddenly Last Summer, Angel Baby, The Exorcist) on television (Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Magnum PI, etc.), and on the stage (The Hasty Heart, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Love Suicide at Schofield Barracks, Lost In Yonkers), as well as her fantastically melodramatic personal life, which seems to be more like faction than an actual life. Included are McCambridge's unusual childhood in Chicago with her two larger-than-life, highly dramatic Irish/American parents, her caeers beginnings on radio when she was in her late teens, her two marriages to two self-centered men, her two miscarriages, two suicide attempts, two divorces and the tracic death of her only child, John Lawrence, who murdered his wife and two daughters and then killed himself. The book also covers McCambridge's close relationships with such varied famous folk as Marlebe Dietrich, Orson Welles (who called her "the world's greatest living radio actress"), John Huston, twice U.S. presidential candidate Adai Stevenson, impressario Billy Rose, and many others. Anyone who would like to be taken behind the scenes with a show business legend will not be able to put this book down once they began to read it. Lackmann's book also contains 72 great photographs and a detailed career record of her numerous and diversified radio, film, TV, and stage performances. I highly recommend Ron Lackmann's biography of the unforgetable actress Mercedes McCambridge to anyone interested in show business and in reading about the amazing personal life and career of a truly great actress!!!
