Book Description
On a fateful day in 1889, the Oklahoma land rush begins, and for thousands of settlers the future is up for grabs. One of those people is Creed McReynolds, fresh from the East with a lawyer's education and a head full of aspirations. The mixed-blood son of a Kiowa mother and a U.S. Cavalry doctor, Creed lands in Guthrie station, the designated Territorial Capital, where he must prove that he is more than the half-blood kid once driven from his own land.
In recounting the precipitous rise and catastrophic fall of the jerrybuilt city of Guthrie, author Sheldon Russell immerses us in the lives of Creed and other memorable characters whose ambitions echo the taming of the frontier--and whose fates hold lessons as important today as they were more than a hundred years ago.
Among the people McReynolds must contend with is Abaddon Damon. A ruthless newspaper publisher, Abaddon is quick to strike any bargain that will bring him the power he craves, and like many others, Creed McReynolds is swept into his whirlwind of greed and deception. Creed becomes the wealthiest man in the Territory--but at an unbearable cost to himself, the dreams of others, and the dignity of his mother's people.
Dreams to Dust takes readers back to the early days of Oklahoma Territory--a sometimes dangerous place filled with nefarious dealings, where violence lurks behind even casual encounters--to tell the story of frontier men and women gambling everything to find their fortune on the windswept southern plains.

Sheldon Russell's best book yet........2007-09-11
Hard to believe the same guy who wrote "Empire" wrote "Dreams to Dust" what a vast improvement on story telling. Dreams to Dust is a great historical fiction that centers around the founding of Guthrie Station, OK. The characters are diverse and well developed. This was a fun book to read.
great book on the history of oklahoma.......2006-07-13
this is a great book, it is very interesting and seems to be fairly accurate to what might have happened in the life just after the land run.
Puts the reader in real events.......2006-03-15

BOOK REVIEW BY CAROLYN BRANCH LEONARD 2/10/2006
Standing at the foot of Mavis's grave, Jerome held his hat in his hands.
"You danced your dance," he whispered, "and left your memory burned in my soul. Now, I will dance mine, and leave my mark upon this land."
This quote from Dreams to Dust, by Sheldon Russell, represents the author's profound understanding of the birth of Oklahoma by land run in 1889, and his brilliant gift for capturing the dramatic events and violent conflict that shaped the legends of our epic West. Dreams to Dust is a rip-roaring tale of the history, land and people of a city born grown in one day - a day of chaos, unique adventure, risk and total confusion. The author knows his subject well, researched it thoroughly and told his story faithfully in a writing style unique to him ...and what an exciting story he has to tell. Dreams to Dust presents many facts revealed in fictional format, such as the station that becomes Guthrie - the first state capitol, abandoned as result of one frontier newspaperman's greed, with the capitol seal stolen away in the dark of night.
Not since James Michener's Centennial has history been told in such a spellbinding way. From the opening line when Creed McReynolds locks his legs against the inside of a rail car, I felt relentlessly carried along on his journey and unable to get off the train until turning the final pages in the wee small hours of morning.
McReynolds, half-breed son of a U.S. Cavalry doctor, becomes just one of an assortment of powerful, unforgettable characters; like the girl with sapphire eyes, or the French architect who designed beautiful buildings of stone, the dog they called Flea Bag, hard-scrabble entrepreneurs who became tycoons, and an orphan boy forced to grow up too soon.
The author speaks in language of the time, through the voices of homesteaders, sooners, cowboys, claim jumpers, soldiers, railroad bulls, mail-order wives, opportunists and common thieves, steadfast men, women and children who come to build their homes and seek their fortunes on former Indian lands. The three million acres of the `89ers are outside the authority of Indian government, and without civil law. Nothing is spared: danger, brutality, hunger, sudden death, the loss of youth and innocence, prejudice, natural disasters, promiscuous women, even the unselfish friendship and love that McReynolds unexpectedly finds in this barren land.
But what comes through strongest is the idea that each man and woman has an innate dream to possess land and prosper on it; a compulsion capable of redeeming a soul or destroying a life. We are subtly reminded that this land - which McReynolds fights so hard to claim - originally was given in peace treaties to his mother's people by the US government.
Even the closing graphs present a ripping good read with a hint of Hemingway:
"As he climbed from the meadow, the air smelled scrubbed and clean, and a soft breeze blew through the trees. At the dugout he stopped, laying his hand on the door, listening to the sounds of the mountain. It was here that he and Alida had been the happiest, had built traps and laughed about hoopers, had made love and planned their future."
.....But no matter what the future held, this much he knew: this land was where he belonged; this land was where he'd stay.

Dumb and Dumber..........2007-09-07
I think she kinda over did everything here and just ruined the whole story.
Her witty writing style went too far and made her H/H seem dim witted. I kinda got sick of phrases like .. " Like duh.."... " ah duh..".... If you're into high school language spoken by 30 year old heroines and a 38 year old hero, this book might be for you. However, most adults will feel their brain cells dieing from reading this novel.
As for the love scenes, I truly enjoyed her "other" books, most of them were filled with passionate, erotic and yet tender love making. In this book however, too much talking takes place that distracts and annoys the reader. It was just way too irritating, the whole story, the characters, the bimbo'ness of every character...
.... it was like.. erm reading about a desperate 16 year old valley girl from California in lust with a 18 year old surfer dude... " like duh!~"
Do try reading her other books first, this one was a disappointment.
Disappointed expected more from Davy's story.......2007-07-04
I love Shannon Mckenna however I was very disappointed in this follow up to the McCloud brothers. I absolute could not stand Margot I found her annoying and trashy and that left me questioning Davy's judgement in women. I envisioned a much more evolved woman with class for Davy much more than the hey dude nympho, fighting, no home training sleaze like Margot. The fighting was not sexy just annoying and no way to highlight love. The dress up at the final show down made no since what so ever to me and having a quickly in a hotel room that Margot was tied up in and almost died in with the mantic psycho still running around outside made no since either. I hope Sean's story will make up for this let down.
Scary but great.......2007-02-03
I've read all five of Shannon McKenna's books and love them all. Her characters are interesting and different. The bad guys are so terrible it scares me, but that's why they call it a thriller. It's always a great experience to read her books.
Outstanding for the erotic suspense/thriller genre.......2007-01-08
This book is kind of Sax Rommer (a 1913 through 1930s British author known for his lurid plots and extravagant villain the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu) meets Angela Knight. Margot is on the run from a psychopathic serial killer (she thinks of him as snaky) who has murdered her boy friend and his assistant and the killer's handler Marcus. The plot is convoluted and lured and gets interesting when she meets Davy a martial arts instructor who is starting up a security consulting business on the side. They are mutually attracted and Davy helps her out with what they think of a a stalker problem. Their relationship is rocky as Davy is a control freak who can't commit himself. There are lots of good well written erotic scenes and the characters are much more convincing than those in Return To Me; showing the authors development as a story teller. Not as good as Hot Night but a very god read and worth the time. The author does seem to be stuck on the psychotic killer menaces the heroine theme.
Couldn't finish this.......2006-11-29
I found the story's dialogue and Margot really irritating. I was about half done before I couldn't take it anymore. I didn't mind "Behind Closed Doors," but I don't think I'll be buying anything by this author again. I couldn't finish "Hot Night" either.

I love these Navy Seals, I cant wait for the newest release!
Out Of Control.......2006-10-28
I loved this book and the whole "Troubleshooters" series. This one was about Ken "Wildcard" and Savannah. I especially liked it because they are on the run and I love books like that. And of course Sam and Alyssa are in it with their dilemma, which is great.
My fav of the series so far.......2006-07-07
4th book in the SEALS Team Sixteen series, and possibly the best of the series so far. I was completely hooked into this book.
This story features Ken "WildCard" Karmody, a Navy SEAL, and Savannah von Hopf, who's uncle has been kidnapped. She goes to Ken - they met in college - and asks him if he will go to Indonesia with her to deliver the ransom money. Once there, they are taken hostage and then end up lost in the jungle and being hunted by just about ever local bad guy.
For a side story in this one, you've got Molly, an American missionary, and Jones, and American ex-patriat who is believed to be a traitor by the US and is also wanted to the tune of 5 mil by an Asian drug lord. He and Molly are involved and end up helping Ken And Savannah.
To add some serious emotional angst to the story, you get some more Sam/Alyssa who are still hopelessly in love with each but can't be together.
For the historical flashback scenes you get the story of Savannah's grandmother, Rose, a german american who was a double agent during WW2. Unlike some of the other historical stories in the previous books, this one had me hooked right away. It was a fascinating tale.
As a whole this was the most well-rounded book. I liked all the different story parts, pairings, and characters equally. Each section kept me into the book. Ken was a fabulous character and well-written. He and Savannah were and interesting pair, as were Jones and Molly. I look forward to more of M & J, who I know for sure end up in book 9.
The only part of the book I mildly disliked was the use of one of my least fav plot devices: getting lost in the jungles while being chased by bad guys. Always annoys me because it is so drawn out and half the time unrealistic. No different this time, but I didn't mind it too much. It didn't kill the book at all.

Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-02-20
Heiress and attorney Savannah Von Hopf gets a call from her uncle Alex in Jakarta...he's been kidnapped, please bring the quarter-million-dollar ransom requested. No problem for Savannah regarding the money, but she's scared to go to Indonesia by herself. She snares the aid of Ken Karmody, a Navy SEAL, and off they go. They're kidnapped upon arrival, escape the kidnappers and spend endless days in the jungle trying to escape capture.
Alex's mother, eighty-year-old Rose, knows from experience how to pull strings and does so. She gets an FBI team working on this case for her...Max, Alyssa and Jules. They all head to Jakarta, along with Ken's SEAL team, to find all the missing - Alex, Savannah, Ken and others.
This is not an in-depth book at all; no symbolism to figure out; no underlying theme; just a fluffy romantic mystery. The dialogue between Ken and Savannah is hilarious and/or sarcastic at times, but definitely had me laughing. There are subplots to keep you turning the pages.
Best from the best!.......2006-01-27
This was the second Suzanne Brockmann book I read and since I have purchased every other one I could find. Out of Control is still my favorite.
Maybe because I was first introduced to Wildcard in this book, I don't share some of the othe opinions about him not living up to character. He's an intelligent, tough hero with low self esteem because he was abused by his father. It's part of who he is, no matter what medals he earns. His inner monologue seemed very honest and realisic and I wish I had a man like him, self depricating and all.
Same goes for Jones. The more you learn about him, the more you want to know and his banter with Molly is the best! I have read this book about six times and I enjoy it everytime!

Drawing from the wisdom of the world's religions, Simply Pray offers readers an easy-to-use modern prayer practice free from any particular theological orientation.
Wikstrom identifies and defines the four major types of prayer that are practiced by all the world's major religions:
"Naming" the many ways in which the holy is present in daily life and the wider world
"Knowing" the self introspectivelyboth in its strengths and weaknesses
"Listening" to the "voice of quiet stillness" that resides in each individual
"Loving" by reaching out to the world
Simply Pray uses these four core prayer types to develop a modern worship practice, using prayer beads as a frame of reference. The book offers illustrated prayer-bead techniques that can be used directly or customized for personal use.
There are also helpful tips on how to make prayer a part of your daily routine, as well as how to to make prayer beads and the benefits of using them:
Prayer beads serve as a focus for meditation. Much more than a mnemonic aid to prayer, prayer beads engage the senses to create a state of mindfulness.
Prayer beads are mobile altars. Simply touching the beads as they rest in a pocket, briefcase, or purse brings a prayerful presence to mundane moments.
Prayer beads serve as reminders of prayer and help keep track of prayers.
Simply Pray is for anyone who is seeking a modern prayer practice that is deeply rooted in world tradition.

The Florences have compiled this second volume to once again help identify the candlestick patterns made from the Depression era to modern day. With no repeated shots from the authors first volume, more than 500 different candlesticks are shown in full color, dozens never before seen in any other book. For simplicity of use this book is arranged according to color: amber, black, blue, crystal, green, iridescent, multicolor, pink, purple, red, smoke, white, and yellow. Many famous glassmakers are represented, such as Heisey, Indiana, Cambridge, Fostoria, Westmoreland, and Tiffin. The descriptive text for each candleholder includes pattern, maker, color, height, and current collector value. A helpful index and bibliography are also provided.

Gene & Cathy Florence's Glass Candlesticks Of The Depression Era, Volume 2: Identification And Value provides a secondary volume of addition candles collected since the author's first volume, presenting the same easy organization by maker and the fine color photos which lend to quick identification. From patterns and color notes to sizes and valuation, Glass Candlesticks, Volume 2 is a pick any owner of Volume 1 needs.
Glass Candlesticks.......2001-11-05
Very beautiful pictures, but limited. Wish Florence has used a different format instead of listing by color. It would have been helpful if he had stated the colors and etchings available for each candlestick.
Candlesticks.......2000-06-08
This book is a very colorful and well written book. However, I expected to see many more pictures of candlesticks than are offered in this book. There is 165 pages of candlesticks with 2 - 3 examples per page, which is probably around the amount made during the Depression Era. Florence gives the company name, the pattern, color, size and mint value. The photos are great and I believe this book is valuable to those just getting into collecting candlesticks from this era.

A Top-Rate Woodworking Guide.......2006-08-11
Langsner's book is one of the finest and most comprehensible woodworking guides on the market. Langsner writes with an enthusiasm and clarity that keeps the reading engaging, though the book is more interesting to readers with at least rudimentary experience with woodworking. Most importantly, he is not so vague that his projects could not be duplicated by an amateur, but he is not so detailed as to discourage innovation. He uses hand tools almost exclusively, so don't expect directions on using a table saw or drill press. The author has included chapters on making shaving horses, milking stools, tables, brooms, hay rakes, wooden spoons and harrows, and his wife has added chapters on basketry and other crafts. Pictures and illustrations are in black-and-white, but they are well-placed and nicely illustrate the components of the project, as well as the finished item. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in making wooden items with hand tools.

Two Powers in Heaven.......2003-10-16
Publisher's info:
In this study of the rabbinic heretics who believed in Two Powers in Heaven, Alan Segal explores some relationships between rabbinic Judaism, Merkabah mysticism, and early Christianity. Two Powers in Heaven was a very early category of heresy. It was one of the basic categories by which the rabbis perceived the new phenomenon of Christianity and one of the central issues over which Judaism and Christianity separated. Segal reconstructs the development of the heresy through prudent dating of the stages of the rabbinic traditions. The basic heresy involved interpreting scripture to say that a principal angelic or hypostatic manifestation in heaven was equivalent to God. The earliest heretics believed in two complementary powers in heaven, while later heretics believed in two opposing powers in heaven. Segal stresses the importance of perceiving the relevance of rabbinic material for solving traditional problems of New Testament and gnostic scholarship, and at the same time maintains the necessity of reading those literatures for dating rabbinic material.
Book Description
A guide to understanding and designing a publication's essential typographic elements. Organized by application --text, headlines, subheads, captions, etc. --Type in Use describes and illustrates the principles of designing pages with type and shows how the pros do it with carefully selected examples from a wide variety of current publications. It focuses on the standard type categories used in magazines, newsletters, and in-house documents; the principles can be applied to all print and electronic media. A chapter is devoted to the use of type on Web sites.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource for Print & Electronic Designers.......2005-05-11
As a newbie to typography, I found "Type in Use" to be an excellent introduction to the field. It's written in a clear and concise manner; though it's straightforward and easy to understand, I didn't feel as though the information was watered down, either.
At least half of the book consists of pictorial examples, which serve to illustrate the principles laid forth in the text. There's also a good deal of "white space," which demonstrates White's ability to practice what he preaches. As a result, the book isn't too heavy on actual text. Nonetheless, White has an envious ability to express himself succinctly, efficiently, and in as few words as possible - so the lack of actual reading doesn't pose a problem.
The book's divided into twelve chapters, with one each focusing on the following topics: text; headlines; subheads; breakouts; captions; department headings; covers; contents; bylines and bios; folios and font lines; web typography; and the history of type. White begins each chapter with a discussion of the fundamentals, and then turns to real-life examples to help illustrate his points. A short paragraph accompanies each picture, and all are arranged in an organized, pleasing manner.
I only have two issues with "Type in Use." The text which sits alongside the examples is printed in red as opposed to black (black is the color of the introductory text). I'm not sure if my copy of the book was flawed, or if this is a universal problem, but the red type on some pages appeared to be smudged and smeared, making it difficult to read. Even on those pages without blemishes, I found that the red type strained my eyes; there's just so much red that it becomes distracting.
Also, I was happy to see that White included a chapter on Web typography, but I would have been happier had the discussion been more in-depth. The final chapter, "The History of Type in Use," was wholly unnecessary and didn't contribute much to the overall discourse; White's readers would have been better served had be omitted chapter 12 and extended his discussion of the Internet. I realize that the book was written in 1992 and revised in 1999 - and six years may as well be six eons in "tech time" - but the Web chapter struck me as very out-of-date. For example, I had to smirk when he announced that Photoshop 5.0 had recently introduced "significant improvements" in the area of type; I don't think I even know anyone who's using a version earlier than 7.0! He also appeared to be agreeable to Flash animation, which today is so overused and abused that it has become the bane of web design.
Nonetheless, I would most definitely recommend "Type in Use" to both novices and experienced typographers alike.

Great for web designers who want to improve their type skill.......2001-09-24
As a web designer, I always found adding typographical elements to my layout to be the hardest part. I would create a great looking page only to ruin it with a weak looking headline or inappropriately selected font settings.
I've looked for a good book to teach me typographical basics and decided to try Type In Use, even though it is geared toward print.
I have to say I've been extremely satisfied with my choice and have noticed a great improvement in my designs. The greatest proof of the change in me is how I began to look at the design of the book itself differently, analyzing it and seeing how Alex White practices what he preaches.
In each chapter, Alex begins by explaining a different part of the printed page and then showing and analyzing real world examples. There are chapters about text, headlines, subheads, breakouts, captions, department headings and more. This may sound a bit boring (devoting an entire chapter to captions?) but Alex manages to keep it all very readable with plenty of inspiring examples.
I've found this book to also be a great source of inspiration to my work after I finished reading it and I come back to it whenever working with any kind of type, online or offline.
The only weak point I found in this book is the chapter about Web Typography. I don't know if Alex aimed this chapter at people with no web experience at all or at web designers who want to learn typography on the web but he failed either way. The entire chapter in nothing more then a series of facts (some of them plain wrong) about writing HTML, designing sites, file formats, etc. Feel free to skip this chapter, the rest is gold.
Where is the white space?.......1999-11-05
A very broad book on design, the content is insightful and thorough. The best part of this book is the timeline. I was especially inspired by the last entry. Why is the letter "i" upside down on the cover?
"The most significant book of the digital publishing age".......1999-07-29
TYPE IN USE by Alex White transcends the trendy DTP "how-to" bookshelf with the real story on how to craft truly fine pages of typography! The first edition was the top selection for publication designers in The Designers' Bookshelf of The Design Center, but has been out of print for more than two years. Now this important work is back, and the editors at graphic-design.com agree -- Type In Use is the essential book for anyone who wants to really understand how to make typography do what it's supposed to do! . . . Alex writes: "Our job [as designers] is to compose elements to make them maximally interesting and comprehensible. 'Maximally interesting' does NOT mean 'Hey, Wow! Pop! Zoom!' It means revealing the content of the story instantly and efficiently." . . . Type In Use will train you how to accomplish that goal. You'll know where to put type on the page, and how to put it there. But unlike any other book in the past 25 years... Type In Use will tell you WHY! If your goal is persuasive, successful publishing, don't wait for this one to go out of print too... just click up there and buy it NOW. You will be very glad you did.

Richard Whiteley was the first person to appear on Channel 4 on Tuesday 2nd November 1982. With the words "As the countdown to the launch of a new channel ends, a new Countdown begins". Nobody was to know, of course, that the new face on the channel was still to be there 17 years later, and that Countdown would be dominating the channels Top Ten ratings. Richard Whiteley is known for his jackets and his puns - opinion is divided as to which is worse. However he is regarded as a cult figure among a broad section of society. He has appeared in such shows as Hale and Pace, TFI Friday, Shooting Stars, Light Lunch, Mrs Merton, Fantasy Football, received a 'Gotcha' from Noel Edmonds and is constantly on the receiving end of Terry Wogan's gentle mockery. He most recently appeared on McCoist and MacAuley and 'The Greatest Rory Ever Told', as himself and as Carol Vordeman. He was the hit of the Edinburgh Fringe this year with his one man show... `If you like Alan Partridge you'll love Richard Whiteley. Singing along with the Countdown theme and pretending to be the Countdown clock was a stroke of brilliance.' Independent
