Book Description

In Fabulous Small Jews, the best-selling author Joseph Epstein has produced eighteen charming, magical, and finely detailed stories. They are populated by lawyers, professors, scrap-iron dealers, dry cleaners, all men of a certain age who feel themselves adrift in the radically changed values of the day. Epstein's richly drawn characters are at various crossroads and turning points in their lives: bitter Seymour Hefferman, who anonymously sends scathing postcards to writers until he gets caught; Moe Bernstein, who, inspired by his grandson, decides to attend to his own health after long delay; divorc Artie Glick, who wants to marry his pregnant girlfriend. Fabulous Small Jews is a marvelous collection from a master of the short form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Each story is a winner!.......2007-01-24

Somehow Epstein's simple straightforward prose leads to tales with universal human meaning that stays with you. Without complexity, the author weaves 15 human dramas that anyone can identify with. There seems to be an abundance of stories about men who are involved with much younger woman, but I liked each story for its own distinct message. The stories are like fables, with a moral message at the end. While the stories are about Jews, this book is for anyone who likes the short story format. It immediately became a favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-09

If you grew up on the North Side of Chicago in the 50's, this book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars 'Fabulous' Stories.......2006-04-04

This is one of those books that I discovered by way of Amazon's "If you liked this, you might like that..." service that we all happily shake our heads and delete from our 'recommended for you' pages.

But the title caught me, so I checked my library and they had it, and I read it, and it's just Fabulous. If you like well written stories, you will enjoy this collection, for that is what these are...well written stories.

About once a year or so I stumble across a really pleasant surprise, Last year it was Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos; -Fabulous Small Jews is my first 'lucky discovery' in 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Great short stories.......2006-03-13

These are "fabulous" short stories full of pathos, emotion and humor. I could not put them down, nor could I hold the book for a vacation. I would agree the author is not of the calibre of Chkehov, Cheever or Carver in depth and scope, but these stories are quite fascinating and worth a read by anyone, even if you're not jewish or haven't lived in Chicago.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming.......2005-08-02

This collection of short stories characterizing the inhabitants of a Toronto apartment building is delightful. Most if not all of the inhabitants are recent Russian Jewish emigres. The tales are poignant, funny and thoroughly entertaining. If you like short stories, you will like this book. It is a great beach book, but it is still really good literature.

But how can an only girl find time to get closer to Lash with all those brothers of her keep threatening Lash if he misbehaves with Jessie?

This is a great story which had me in stitches in parts. I can't wait to get onto the rest of the series. Next one is Wes's story in "Badlands bad boy".

A simple equation yet it works: bad virgin=good book. You don't need to be an engineer, however, to comprehend this fast paced novel. It stunningly portrays what life in the old west must have been like. The author uses vivid imagery to bring the characters to life. YEE-ha go read it cowgirls

          Book Description

This lost novella by the century's most renowned paleontologist has been called the greatest time-travel story in more than one hundred years.

Vanishing from Earth on February 30, 2162, while working on a problem of quantum theory, research chronologist Sam Magruder is thrown back 80 million years in time. Endowed with the intelligence of a twenty-second-century man, Magruder struggles to survive, feeding on scrambled turtle eggs and diligently recording his observations on a stone-slab diary, even as menacing tyrannosaurus try to gnaw off his limbs.

Filled with magnificent descriptions of the dinosaurs as only Simpson himself could render them, The Dechronization of Sam Magruder is not only a classic time-travel tale but a philosophical work that astutely ponders the complexities of human existence and achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the past!.......2006-04-30

The Dechronization Of Sam Magruder is a time traveling story by the late great George Gaylord Simpson. The introduction is by Arthur C. Clarke and with an afterword by Stephen Jay Gould. And it is brilliant!
Based very much on the style of H. G. Wells's The Time Machine Mr. Simpson writes a story about a man being sent BACKWARDS in time, about 80 million years, to find himself totally alone among the dinosaurs. The story is less about ancient life as it is about what is means to be a member of mankind. Is this fiction? Is it science? Or is it philosophy? Whatever it may be it turns out to be just plain fun.
A short story any fan of time travel needs for their library.

          5 out of 5 stars A creationist enjoyed this.......2006-04-30

Despite begin an adherent of creation science and abhorrer of evolution, I found this a fascinating and well-written story. I enjoyed it so much I read it to my teenage daughter. Sam Magruder is a "time" scientist in the future who accidentally falls victim to his own experiment. Simpson's plot is compelling. At first it bothered me that I found an evolution story to interesting, until I realized that evolution is science fiction anyway.

Stephen J. Gould notes were an interesting insight into just how philosophically-based evolution is.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look, especially for the essays included........2005-09-03

This slim novella, by the late and distinguished paleontologist, was
found in his papers after his death. It's just so-so as fiction, in my
opinion, but the book is worth your attention for the two elegant essays
included. The first, by Arthur C. Clarke, outlines the history of time-travel
stories, and includes more recommendations for classic dinosaur tales.
Sir Arthur notes, with admirable succintness, that "the most convincing
argument against [real] time travel is the remarkable scarcity of [real]
          time travellers."

Stephen Jay Gould was a student of Simpson's, and contributes a
graceful and elegaic essay on Simpson's novella, career and life --
which, I must say, I enjoyed more than the story. An exceptional
piece, not to be missed if you have any interest in Gould or Simpson.

Simpson's novella does have its charms -- it has a nice mock-
Victorian club-story opening, not unlike Clarke's Tales from the
White Hart, and is oddly compelling despite the amateurish writing.
Sam Magruder, a chronologist in 2162, is accidentally "dechronized"
into the late Cretaceous, with no possibility of rescue, and spends the
rest of his life evading, eating and studying dinosaurs. It's certainly
not "the best time travel story since HG Wells" as the cover blurb
avers, but it's worth a look. Sadly, the story's paleontology is
          now quite out of date.

I picked this book up in a used book store about 10 years ago. Was fascinated by the smart time travel story. I generally like to spread the word about good books so I loaned this to a friend who never returned it. Since then I've thought about the nice concise writing and compact story that manages to make one think, especially since I liked how he wraps up the story with a good moral on what it means to be human.

4 out of 5 stars A vibrant interpretation of a core Tibetan Buddhist teaching.......2001-06-03

Dilgo Khyentse (1910-1991) was an important Nyingma master, exponent of Dzogchen (aka Mahamudra), teacher of Chogyam Trungpa and transmitter of teachings to HH. The Dalai Lama. His writings are known for their poetic beauty.

This book is his commentary on Atisha's "Seven Point Mind Training," a core Tibetan Buddhist teaching which concerns the cultivation of bodhicitta or limitless compassion. The root text of Atisha is very short, given in three pages at the beginning of this book. Dilgo Khyentse then draws the reader in quickly with vivid stories of the teachers of Atisha which illustrate the fundamental principles underlying the teaching. He then proceeds line by line through the root text and brings each line to life, clarifying and elaborating them, and again, using stories to make points and to engage the imagination. The notes and glossary at the back of the book are a welcome addition.

This book is an absolute necessity for any hockey card collector or autograph collector. This book also is great to just browse and learn about the history of hockey cards.
The book has numerical listings for virtually every hockey card ever issued, including many local or regional issued cards. In addition to that comprehensive list, the book simplifies things by relisting all of these cards alphabetically! It also has at least one picture of a card from most sets.

There are some lovely vests and they look pretty easy to do. Especially nice is the diamond shapes on the left in the cover picture.Back cover has two on the left that are nice also. The top is a Noro yarn done sideways and the bottom is an unusual construction for those who want a challenge. Enough info is given so one can substitute the yarns. Book includes lots of helpful tips and schematics for each item. Even suggestions on level of difficulty. Since there aren't many books for crocheting garments, this is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Minimal Designs, Maximum Back Pain, and Great Vision!.......2001-07-19

Most of the 5,000 plus wonderful rooms designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are not open to the public. Even if you could go behind those doors, you often would find that the original furnishings have been moved, replaced, or lost. This book gives you a chance to go where you often cannot go in any other way to see the best original details of furnishings in 50 of the best. Unlike most architects, Mr. Wright designed in such a way that "the rooms inside would dictate the architecture outside." Even inside, he designed all elements of the room, including floor and wall coverings, art glass in many cases, lighting fixtures, furniture, and where everything should be located. He also specified that those who used the rooms should be limited to bringing in only certain types of objects, and for certain locations. For example, ornamental china was allowed on one ledge of the dining room in Robie House.

In working on furnishings, he had a lot of help. Marion Mahoney often finished his designs for furniture and art glass, and saw them through implementation. George Niedecken was often called upon to execute conceptual designs of furniture. Artists helped with sculptures and murals. Artisans crafted many of the items that Mr. Wright sketched.

The furnishings were never meant to be considered separately from the buildings and rooms they were to reside in. Yet this volume can help you appreciate these details that are often tiny in photographs of entire rooms.

I have had the chance to visit many Wright homes and buildings, yet this book greatly expanded my understanding of his work.

This book is primarily focused on furniture, but has a number of important art glass and decorative arts examples.

Mr. Wright designed what have to be the most elegant, minimal chairs . . . and the ones that were probably the most painful to sit in. I had a hard time appreciating the design while thinking about how impractical they are. Well, every genius has limitations . . . and chairs were that for Mr. Wright.

My favorite furniture examples in the book were the print table from the Oak Park house, Robie winged sofa, Coonley desk, and the Johnson Wax desk. Of the art glass, I liked the Roberts window, the Luxfer prism glass, Thomas vestibule, Dana windows, and the Tree of Life window. In the decorative pieces, I enjoyed the pedestal and butterfly lamps, and the glass-faced "golden" mortar.

As you will see from the examples, each one loses a lot by being seen in isolation from the rest of the room. Ms. Maddex does a nice job of describing each item or ensemble in a half-page essay covering the 50 subjects here.

The photography is superb in the 67 illustrations, including 64 full color plates. That's quite important because you will not usually be allowed to photograph these objects, even if you do have the good fortune to see them in a Wright home or public building.

After you finish examining the items you like best, I suggest that you think about what qualities furnishings must have in order to improve the quality of your life. How well does your best furnishing do so now? How can you make that furnishing ease your way into natural living even better?

Relax . . . then, see, touch, and enjoy the beauty all around you!

5 out of 5 stars Frank Lloyd Wright Excelled at Designing Interior Details.......2000-06-14

Diane Maddex's 50 Favorite Furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright is a sensual, visual experience. This book has three sections dealing with furniture, art glass and decorative arts. Frank Lloyd Wright excelled at designing the furnishings of the rooms in the famous buildings that he created. The photos show the craftsmanship and pure beauty of the each form. The author has done a admirable job of selecting a wide variety of pieces to share. I hadn't understood that every item that was inside the house was just as important as the exterior design to Frank Lloyd Wright before reading this book. With that sort of attention to details, it is easier for me to understand why Frank Lloyd Wright stands out as a creative genius. I bought this book for inspiration and ideas for decorating a new "Prairie Style" house. Thanks Diane Maddex for helping me dream.

                Book Description

While countless films have been based on fictional characters, a surprising number have also been based on the lives of real people. This comprehensive reference book covers 640 nonfictional characters of historical or social importance who have been portrayed in at least two feature films. It lists 569 real people arranged alphabetically (from George Adamson to Emile Zola), provides a brief biography of each, and lists each film in which he or she has been portrayed. Such information as the actor portraying the real person and the country, year of release, running time, color or black & white, director(s), source (novel, play, etc.), awards, alternate titles (if any), and cast credits are given. The appendices list 71 additional real people who have been portrayed in feature films, including American presidents, British, French, German and Russian monarchs, and Billy the Kid and Wild Bill Hickock.
