Book Description
"It is hard to imagine anything more chilling and profound than Kundera's apparent lightheartedness."'Elizabeth PochodaIN this dark farce of a novel, set in an old-fashioned Central Euroepean spa town, eight characters are swept up in an accelerating dance: a pretty nurse and her repairman boyfriend; an oddball gynecologist; a rich Amrican (at once saint and Don Juan); a popular trumpeter and his beautiful, obsessively jealous wife; an unillusioned former political prisoner about to leave his country and his young woman ward.Perhaps the most brilliantly plotted and sheerly entertaining of Milan Kundera's novels, Farewell Waltz poses the most serious questions with a blasphemous lightness that makes us see that the modern world has deprived us even of the right to tragedy.Written in Bohemia in 1969-70, this book was first published (in 1976) in France under the title La valse aux adieux (Farewell Waltz), and later in thirty-four other countries. This beautiful new translation, made from the French text prepared by the novelist himself, fully reflects his own tone and intentions. As such it offers an opportunity for both the discovery and the rediscovery of one of the very best of a great writer's works."Kundera remains faithful to this subtle, wily, devious talent for a fiction of `erotic possibilities.' "'New York Times Book Review"Farewell Waltz shocks. Black humor. Farcical ferocity. Admirably tender portraits of women." 'Le Point (Paris)"After Farewell Waltz there cannot be any doubt. Kundera is a master of contemporary literature. This novel is both an example of virtuosity and a descent into the human soul."'L'Unit, (Paris)

Enjoyable read from the profound Kundera........2007-06-09
Summary:
"[For] Kundera, the individual is the smallest cell of society, the object, not the subject of history." - Elisabeth Pochoda
In a small spa town, seven characters searching for happiness find themselves intertwined in a waltz orchestrated by Milan Kundera. In five days you will be introduced to, and discover, the secrets and desires of a pretty nurse (Ruzena), a suspicious boyfriend, a gynecologist, a rich American, a famous trumpeter and his obsessively jealous wife and a former political prisoner about to leave the country. How far will the characters go to fulfill their will? Human morality, responsibility, and quest for stability are held under scrutiny and explored in this wonderfully written book.
Thoughts:
Full of wit, charm, sudden revelations and memorable quotes, this book is a true enchantment to read, bringing you into the lives of all these characters. You'll wonder when and where their interaction will occur and once you discover it, you won't be able to stop reading on to wonder where the characters will go next. A wonderful read that will certainly become a favorite.
Memorable quotes (as I translated from the French):
"Aesthetic racism is almost always a mark of inexperience. [...] When God invited humanity to love and to reproduce, doctor, he was thinking of the ugly just as much as the handsome. I am thus convinced that aesthetic criticism comes not from God, but from the Devil. In heaven, no one distinguishes between ugliness and beauty."
"I say that maternity is a curse and I refuse to contribute in it."
"I know only one thing; that I could never say with total conviction that man is a wonderful being and I want to reproduce it."
Go out and pick up the book today. Delve into this wonderful work by Milan Kundera!
Not your average Kundera.......2006-11-28
It is true that 'Farewell Waltz' is among Kundera's lighter novels and does not pack as much of a philosophical punch as some of his other works. However this is not to say that it lacks the gifted Kunderian touch.
What Kundera presents us with here is an examination of the complications that can be encountered where matters of the heart are concerned. The characters of 'Farewell Waltz' are plagued with inconquerable passions, raging jealousies and, at times, appallingly shallow self-interestedness.
These potentially unpleasant characteristics however form a potent and entertaining mix for the reader, as well as a novel that is not short on depth and examinations of the emotional turmoil that the human mind is prone to.
Although the characters of this novel are somewhat more unpleasant than those in Kundera's other offerings. 'Farewell Waltz' is still a good read and an interesting aside in the career of a great writer.
Shockingly funny... and sad!.......2002-10-14
It is a strange story .. at the beginning you might think it is one of those books dealing with something that could happen everyday .. but the way the characters are woven into the story .. the complications and the revelations of each one of them is way extreme!
A five day adventure .. a hideous ride .. a mockery of human life .. six different characters.. none of them was happy or satisfied with what he/she had .. each one of them wanted more and something better .. and took hard measures to reach their goals just like Dr. Skreta whom I think is ironically funny, smart and desperate!
Kundera keeps you in touch with his characters .. you know what they think and how they feel .. you know their weaknesses and their strengths .. and what they want to accomplish ..yet I didn't expect such a tragedy!
Read it and enjoy!
Lightness of the tragedy?.......2001-03-29
On the surface this novel couldt be regarded as mystery, but Kundera isn't a crime-writer at all. He keeps the reader always on track what's going on. Nevertheless the story becomes more and more suspenseful regarding the question wether there'll be at the end a victim or not. But that I don't reveal here. As ever I was very impressed by Kunderas mastership in drawing the characters. Every figure comes forward with all of it's strenghts and weakenings, with all of it's rarity and commonness. Nobody get's a prefered position by the author. Even nobody seems to bear the blame, blame appears more as dereliction. In a very subtile manner Kundera clarifies the reason why under communist dictatorships humanity failes more often than elsewhere.
A PILL AWAY.......2001-02-19
Set against the backdrop of a Central European spa town, Kundera once again orchestrates his polyphonic style to intertwine lives and stories to play out a small portion of the human condition. In what seems like an orgy of loves unfulfilled, partnership of the most unlikely kind; a nurse, her boyfriend, an American, a famous musician and his wife and a potential émigré and his ward mix and mingle and form some sort of relationship soup that manages to hold together.
Despite the playful tone of the story and dialogue, "Farewell Waltz" deals with the profound issue of the fragility of life. Far be it for Kundera be labeled a symbolist, the blue pill speaks to me of how easy it is to choose the back door of living and to cash it all in for one reason or another. On one level, the accidental taking of the pill by Ruzena shows us just how easily life can be taken away. With Kundera's books you can be guaranteed that is that and much more.
The irony of Dr. Skreta lies in his bizarre power to create - a very Mary Shelley touch - of science without soul. Makes me stop to think about the true nature of my origin. Over and above all this, Kundera play on how human we are and celebrates the fragility, the emotion and the universal need for love....

Consistently good........The Texas Brands Book 8.......2005-07-19
This one was pretty good. Loved the Southern Bad Boy Jake. Sara has tons of spunk to offset her timid characteristics from earlier books.
I loved that there was a lot more involvement with the cousins than her brother Marcus' story. I really enjoy being able to go back and visit the other Brands and this book is very good for that.
The beginning grabbed you, the book kept going and the end was exciting! Well done for another great Texas Brand book!
Great read........2005-05-02
Bk. 8-Texas Brands series.
Sara Brand is on holiday when she meets Jake Nash. A few days after arriving a murder occurs. Jake, having served time for another killing is the prime suspect. The killer thinks Sara can identify him so he goes after her. Jake is the only one who can save her.
A great read in this series. Next (Bk. 9) The Texas Brand: The homecoming about Luke Brand & Jasmine Jones.
An exhausting, passionate read!.......2000-05-08
A Kindergarten teacher with a degree in wholesome has decided to take a trip to the bayou for a vacation. Texas innocent Sara Brand finds that once she's there, the fear of tragic past isn't so easily forgotten. When she meets bad boy Jake, Sara finds herself attracted to him, but the feeling isn't mutual. Jake has his own problems and past to deal with; he wishes she would run back home to Texas. When Sara witnesses a murder, memories of her past flood back and put her in a fearful, paralyzing state. Jake steps in to help her. As they try to find the murderer, a voudon priestess tells Sara that Jake is her shield, and she is the only one who can save his soul.
Maggie Shayne is a prolific writer. She has probably tapped into every romance subject there is. Her romantic atmosphere has always been sizzling and her characters remarkable and convincing. "Angel Meets the Badman" is no different. In this one, be prepared to taken on an emotional journey to a humid, perspiring location full of feelings, threats, fear, and budding passion. I promise you, you will be exhausted when it's over.

Great Start, disappointing finish.......2000-05-05
I thought I had a keeper on my hands for the first few chapters of this book. The hero was an extremely sexy bad boy, the heroine was someone I could identify with, and the tension was sizzling. Then...*pfft* from the moment the hero takes off with the heroine into the swamps, the story fell like a souffle after the kitchen door is slammed. It wasn't BAD, just unremarkable. A let down after the great start. If you are looking for an excellent Cajun bad boy story, try THE LONG HOT SUMMER by Wendy Rosnau (SIM #996).
The Saga Continues.......2000-04-14
This is the latest in a series about the Brand family. This one is about Sara Brand, who after years of being in the witness protection program, and meeting her family again after all these years goes on vacation and meets local bad guy Jake Nash. She sees a murder for the second time in her life, and they are off and running. This book has everything, humor, sadness, love and a strong loving family. It is a great book as all the Brand books have been, I would recommemd it to everyone who loves a great story.

High time Schmitz was rediscovered.......2002-10-16
These are nice collections of the works of James H. Schmitz. Some of the stories Eric Flint came up with for this series are new to me. So if you already have a few Telzy Amberdon's and the Witches of Karres floating around, this is still a useful addition.
If you haven't read him, then prepare yourself for a treat. What can I call it but intelligent space opera? The Miles Vorkosigian stories come to mind, and Jo Clayton's "Diadem" books, perhaps certain Keith Laumer... If you want a well-told, involving, and exciting tale showing tough intelligent people being tested to their limits, well, Schmitz is that story-teller.
You like the "one man army" exploits of Ahnold and Van Damm? Take a look at how a young marine biologist wages a devastating one-woman battle of psychological warfare against an alien invasion ("The Demon Breed"). And then there is the battle of wits as the captain of a tramp freighter has to defend against an alien rather more intelligent than he is ("The Winds of Time.")
At the risk of being misunderstood, I'd like to call the writings of James H. Schmitz "Golden Age as it should have been." Oh yes...and track down the "Witches of Karres"; one of the most perfect and delightful SF books ever written.
Contains possibly the very best of Schmitz........2002-05-31
As I noted in my review of _Telzey Amberdon_, James Schmitz was known for his strong female lead characters. In _The Hub_, we have a collection of stories set in his most famous universe, that of the star civilization called the Hub, and many of these feature the strong female characters for which he was known.
Perhaps most notable are the two stories featuring Nile Etland, a scientist on the rather remote world of Nandy-Cline, both hinging on some of the peculiar lifeforms native to that planet. My favorite has been listed under at least two titles -- "The Tuvela" and "The Demon Breed" -- and shows a unique method of dealing with an alien invasion. The ending is also unusual and gives us some very telling insight into the functioning of the Hub government.
Many of the other stories have similar links, in that they chronicle the interaction of people with the ecologies of other planets, giving us both a grasp of the characters and a sometimes startling glimpse into the way life on alien worlds could be at once very similar to our own and yet startlingly -- even dangerously -- different. Schmitz' alien lifeform design was always well-thought-out, and _The Hub_ showcases this skill. Many people who are good at convincing science-fictional detail tend to be weak at characterization, but Schmitz is strong on all fronts. This book shows clearly why he is considered one of the greats of his era.
A great wrap up.......2001-08-12
This is the last, and in some ways the best of the Baen re-issue of the Hub Stories. The range of stories is impressive. It starts with The Searcher, one of the best Schmitz stories. The Protagonists, Danestar Gems and Corwin Wergard, are from the Keth Interstellar Agency, which is a recurring character in the tales. By the way, Schmitz gave his characters great names. The searcher of the title is one very unusual and interesting monster with plausible motives. The human protagonists also have to deal with some human gangsters and corrupt U-League officials. The pacing is good, the story is fun and complex, and the resolution works. Recommended. A Nice Day for Screaming, Attitudes,The Winds of Time, Machmen, and The Other likeness all deal with five different types of alien invasion and with five different types of outcomes. Schmitz had a penchant for sly twists in his tales. Along with The Searcher, The Winds of Time would make a great horror SF movie. Much better than most of what Hollywood churns out. The other four stories in this book deal with ecology, a recurring theme in Schmitz's stories. Grandpa and Balanced Ecology are both good stories where the environment is a major character. The other two stories, Trouble Tide and The Demon Breed both feature Nile Etland, one of Schmitz's most fascinating characters. She is not psychic or immortal or more than human. Like trigger she depends on wits, courage, intelligence, and her gun skills. She also has a good working knowledge of the local (and dangerous) environment. Trouble tide introduces her, but she comes up to speed in The Demon Breed. The story was originally serialized as The Tuvela in the September and October 1968 issues of Analog. The amphibious invaders are calles Parahuans, the action takes place on a water world far from the Hub cnter called Nandy-Cline, and Nile is a biologist for a pharmaceutical company. One of the things I like about Schmitz's stories is that the characters have lives and jobs and are believable. Nile defeats the invaders with the help of some talking intelligent otters, both domestic and feral. There are interesting sidelights on the quest for immortality as well. The story is one of the best Science Fiction action-adventure stories I have ever read and I highly recommend it. Unlike many other SF writers Schmitz saw action (during WWII). Despite that, or maybe because of it, his stories are not particulary violent. His characters do not merely shoot their way out of trouble, but rely on wits, skills, and brains. Even Heslett Quillan, the wise-cracking gunman/secret agent and husband of Trigger Argee, uses brains and schemes to defeat his enemies. Although he is good with his Miam Devil blaster. In The Demon Breed Nile uses her considerable knowledge of the local ecology to mount a psychological campaign against the invaders and then to defeat them. The story ends with an exciting commando raid and space battle. But the ending really takes place off world, when the Psychology Service and an alien committee independently evaluate the events on Nandy-Cline. They cast a whole new light on the story. I recommend going to the James Schmitz website (after you read the story) for more background on the history of how the ending came to be written. My one quibble with the book is the cover. The original Scheonherr cover on the September 1968 Analog was much superior. I wish it had been used for this book. You can also find it on the website. All in all I heartily recommend this book.
Otters, spooks, and ecologies.......2001-04-10
This is the fourth and last of the Hub series being reprinted by Baen Books. James Schmitz was a science fiction writer of the 1950s-1970s known for his skill at characterization, interesting ideas, and a delightful style. In this volume, we encounter intelligent otters (The Demon Breed), horrible monsters (The Winds of Time), and an award-winning short story whose main character is an ecology (Balanced Ecology). Although this volume will be popular with long-time science fiction fans, everyone will enjoy his style. Strongly recommended.

Having Walked the Path, I Highly Recommend.......2006-05-07
I can't remember now if this book was given as a gift or if it was one of the many books my wife and I "grabbed" as we struggled to find peace immediately following the death of our 4-month old son.
The information is presented in a straightforward manner. Most importantly, in small enough "doses" that the points can be retained at a time when comprehension and the ability to hold it all together are in short supply.
If you are walking this perilous path, or care about someone who is, this book will help to begin the long journey.
Marriage section huge plus!.......2005-01-27
I especially find the three page chapter on Marriage to be of grave importance! It is a known fact that the death of a child destroys marriages because the pain is so grave and often occupancies such distance. In less than three pages, he has given details to save one's marriage during such a loss. And I can attest that what he says is so true!
Gone But Not Lost.......2002-04-27
This book was recommended to me by a good friend who had survived the death of her daughter in a car accident. I had been searching for a book on grief since the loss of my wonderful 20-year-old son, Adam, in a car accident on March 1, 2002. So many books overwhelmed me with too much information.
Gone But Not Lost gave me simplified, practical advice combined with scriptures. Surviving the death of a child leaves us in a surreal state and our attention span is almost non-existent. These shorter chapters allowed me to read and heal at my own pace without getting bogged down in long, wordy chapters.
I highly recommend David W. Wiersbe's book to all who have lost a child of any age.
Answers a lot of those unanswerable questions........1999-02-19
Written with the Bible as a comfort zone, this book answers a lot of questions that you have about the death of your child. Having a child that died in an auto wreck and being a divorced parent, I have had no close human companionship to help me through these rough days. I am just now able to pick up the book and read it after receiving it 6 months ago. This book has helped me through many lonely times and answered many many questions. After the inital shock wears off and the questions go unanswered, this book will give you the insight that you need. You may not be able to read it initally but I promise when the time comes - you will be able to pick it up and read it. Relief is what this book offers. You can take it or leave it but you need to read it. It is wonderfully written and cuts deep. I am able to pick it up and read a couple of chapters, cry, pick it up again and continue on. My life is looking up and this book has helped. Thank you Mr. Wiersbe for helping me see brighter days.

christmas gift idea.......1999-12-20
Being from Mannhattan NY. I am unfamiliar with south western style cooking as it is really supposed to be. I was recently given this book by a friend as a CHRISTMAS GIFT. I was'nt sure if I could achieve success in the kitchen with this book as I am adept at making matzaballs and corned beef and potatoes being of New York Jewish descent and all. After trying some of the recipies like Chile Colorado and Tortillas I felt like a pro. A regular Latina Kitchen sensation. The recipies are easy to follow and well written. The south western familiy history told by the author actually makes me feel like I am part of the culture as I read the tales that Mrs. Romero weaves about her heritage. Excellent book you'll love it.
Real New Mexican Food.......1999-12-20
I am a native of New Mexico and have loved the cooking of this region all my life. Having moved to Arizona as a young child, it was hard to find mexican food that tastes like "New Mexican" food. There is a difference and reading this book and using the recipes have allowed me to taste the original flavors in my own home. Not only are the recipes original and delicious, but the story of this family is especially interesting and in itself "flavorfull". Great book!
Great Cooking Made Easy.......1999-12-14
What a great book! Ms. Romero has included some fantastic, authentic dishes that are tasty and easy to prepare. I'm a guy and not all that gifted in the kitchen, but her book makes me look like a hero with all of my family and friends. I told my wife that my recipes are family recipes--I just didn't tell her whose family.
The family history in the book is extremely interesting, too.
You should buy this book and get cooking.
Excellence in Authenticity.......1999-12-14
I was born and raised in New Mexico territory. I am of Hispanic descent and I am familiar with the Legendary Cooking of Flora Duran. Senora Duran was a wonderful and kind lady as told in old New Mexican Folk stories and her recipies are completely authentic. I know this because my whole family used to cook this type of cusine. They used to tell stories of the old Duran family and the cooking that warmed the souls of many hearts and the generosity of Mrs. Duran that fed the bellies of many hungry wandering families. As the legend goes Senora Flora Duran never asked for compensation. Her only gain was the gratification that she felt in helping the road weary and wandring families that were uprooted by the hardships of the time. She was able to over come her own poverty and difficulties in an effort to give to others. It was told that she did such in an effort to give strength in character to her own children and also because of her devout faith in God. Just a wiff of this type of cooking brings sweet memories of family and home and the warm safe feeling that only the essence of family and tradition could bring. To taste the meals created from these recipies sends my imagination back to the day's when I was a boy. I am happy to hear that the Duran Legends are true and that there was in all actuallity a Senora & Senor Duran. My hat is off to Regina Romero Grandaughter of the legendary Flora Duran. You have brought the essence of my New Mexican Heritage thousands of miles to warm my soul. Bueno Senora Romero y Gracias

Handmade Baskets:28 Beautiful Baskets.......2002-07-26
This book is a great basket book - good, clear instructions. In general, I would recommend Lyn Siler's "The Basket Book" as a better beginner's basket book. The projects in "Handmade Baskets" are a bit more advanced and unusual which for a non-beginner makes this a great addition to "The Basket Book".
Love This - Very Good Illistration and Photos.......2000-09-12
I bought this book when I was beginning to make baskets. This book is a must for the beginner and the advanced basket maker. It has several diagrams for each of the basket and has at least one color picture for each basket. Ms. Siler even has several photographs of variations of the baskets. I really enjoy this book and feel that it is a wonderful resource for all basket weavers.
An excellent compilation of basket-making projects.......1997-03-18
This book provides plans and directions for 28 baskets in a variety of styles: New England, Southwest, Victorian, etc. The directions are clear and concise with an added section for potential problem areas such as rimming and lashing the basket. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for projects and plans

Design Ideas for Basements (Design Ideas Series)
ASIN: 0865738912 |
Book Description
It's said that you can't judge a book by its cover. George Salter, a legendary figure in the field of book design, never subscribed to this belief. For more than forty years, his beautifully drawn and lettered covers served as elegant windows onto the works of such revered authors as Albert Camus, John Dos Passos, Jack London, and Thomas Mann. Salter had the rare ability to reduce the illustrated dust jacket -- a new part of the book package -- to its essential elements. He could visually evoke -- with typography, calligraphy, and pictorial imagery -- the contents of any given book.
Salter's life and work bridged two continents and cultures, and spanned the severest political turmoil of the 20th century. Through a tumultuous life, nothing halted his tireless and brilliant design work. Classic Book Jackets tells Salter's story and describes the innovative design thinking he brought to his design students (including his designation of seven different jacket types that are still valid today). It includes more than 200 reproductions of his finest works, and a complete catalog of his jackets, designs, layouts, and lettering jobs for the book trade.

Book Description
Who is Lance Comfort? The short answer is that he is the most unjustly neglected director in British film history. McFarlane's lively, thoroughly researched study aims to correct this situation. In the years between 1941 and 1965 he made some of the most entertaining films in Britain. There was the striking success of his second feature as director, Hatter's Castle (1941). When he returned to this melodramatic vein in 1945 he made a series of highly proficient and enjoyable studies in obsession, including Bedelia (1946) with Margaret Lockwood, and Temptation Harbour (1947) starring Robert Newton. Before this book, Comfort's career has never been charted in full.
