I'm not a Texan, and I don't play one on TV but . . . .......2007-02-25
I'm a journalist, a sports fan, amateur historian and the fourth great-granddaughter of the amazing Peter Sides, a Revolutionary War Veteran who was killed at the bloodiest battle on Texas soil, the Battle of Medina in 1813.
You don't believe me? Look it up!
I first read this book years ago and loved it. I've recommended it to others who have loved it. It's a fabulous read and rollicking adventure. It's the kind of book I keep re-reading and buying any copy I can find and passing it on to people I love.
Please excuse the passive voice in the previous paragraph. I know better ; )
Fast Copy is a lot of lively fun!
A reluctant "thumbs down".......2006-02-25
I am a fan of the great Dan Jenkins and his exemplary sports writing over the years. But I have to give this book a thumbs down.
The story is not much more than a Nora Roberts-type potboiler, with a lot of historical and cultural references thrown in. Did I say "a lot"? Jenkins, a life-long Texan, packs in an unbelievable amount of name-dropping, and allusions to long-ago people, places, and things, that at times it's hard to find the plot among all those references. A little nostalgia for days gone by can be a good thing, but I'm afraid it was way overdone here.
And that's the way it was, is, and shall be...........2002-04-04
A native Texan myself, I found myself laughing all through this book. I caught continual glimpses of friends and relatives (and, yes, even myself!) in this wonderful little novel that explores Texas, football, and Texans.
However, it is not just a comedy that pokes fun at Texans. Nosiree! It deals specifically with Depression-Era Texas and makes us take a disturbing look at ourselves. How can someone callously believe that other humans are "just hobos"? Do we truly believe that appearances are more important than reality? What will one do for Love; is it ok to hurt others to pursue one's own pleasure?
This is a most thought-provoking work and well worth the time to read.
Customer Reviews:
you can ignore the dialectic.......2007-04-30
This book is a highly enjoyable gathering of short stories set in Pournelle's universe of the CoDominium. Where the Cold War never ended but an Alderson hyperdrive was instead discovered. This froze the Cold War into centuries of outgoing colonisation.
While set some couple of centuries in the future, much of the book's technology is little advanced from our time, on the planetary surface. Due to a plot device where the CoDominium banned most research. This also permitted (or perhaps that was its intended point) Pournelle to write stories about mercenaries without having to strain unduly for exotic weapons or ideas.
Along these lines, the astute reader might note that the civilian society scarcely mentions the equivalent of our Internet. Sure, there's mention of computers and networks. But not an all pervasive web or mesh that ours is rapidly becoming. Ironic, that even a noted futurist like Pournelle would miss it. This is one of the aspects that dates the stories to pre-early 90s, if you did not know the actual publication dates of this book or of its contained stories.
The yarn is solid military SF. Most of its stories were composed at a time when the Soviet Union seemed eternal. Another way to date the stories. But it was also when Pournelle was actively writing, perhaps at the peak of his productivity. Sadly, in 2007 things are different. Given the fall of the Soviets, we are highly unlikely to see any more stories in this series. Darn! The Falkenburg character was compellingly depicted. While some detractors of Pournelle say this book is a paean to militarism, there is not much preaching of an overt dialectic. A romping read, and you can treat it at this level if you find Pournelle's politics disagreeable.
Another reason we are unlikely to see more such stories is that Pournelle has grown strangely quiescent in recent years. Apart from his irascible ruminations on his Chaos Manor website, there has been little output in the form of stories. Pity.
Damn good stuff.......2005-12-01
A million years ago, back when I was a poor college student, I decided to forgoe the b-movie of the week and venture into the local Supercrown. Since I had already read Jerry's collaborations with Niven, I thought I'd give this book a chance. I did, and I got a real kick out of it. I've heard others describe Jerry's books as fascist, and his politics to the right of Attila the Hun, but they're lacking in brain cells, or have never read his work in the first place. Falkenberg's Legion (actually two novels in one) deals with the hard decisions a military commander has to make. It is in no way preachy, but sort or amoral, in attitude. It has to be or it would not be entertaining. JC Falkenberg is a great character, one I'll long remember. Jerry's Empire of Man deals with an alliance between the US and Soviet Union called the CoDominium, and the fall of the CoDominium and the wars between factions. I know the Soviet angle may sound dated, but I am sure with a little history under your belt you can appreciate it. Jerry has a great understanding of politics and history (often one in the same) and has created one of the most believable future histories in SF. If you dig RAH you'll dig Pournelle. He's damn good.
Hard-Core Military Sci-fi...done right........2005-05-12
There are so few Military Sci-fi books I can read these days without cringing. But, since I'm thoroughly addicted to the genre, I tend to read em all anyway.
Dunno why I haven't read this series sooner, I've always been impressed with Pournelle, and "Footfall" is in my Top 10. Picking up Falkenberg's Legion renewed that faith, and reminded me that there are still good writers doing Military Sci-fi.
Almost the perfect mix of military action, politics and social commentary. Some interesting perspectives on military history, how the military has been used, how the military people view themeselves...and how that may play itself out in present and future roles. All mixed in this future world of the "Codomminium" and multi-worlds universe Pournelle has created in Falkenberg's Legion.
Excellent job, by someone who truely knows what he is doing...and has been doing it for quite a while. Can't wait to get the next book in the series.
I guess that is one advantage of starting a series late...no waiting :)
A great start to a great series.......2001-08-12
This book is the first of four novels, the next three being Prince of Sparta, Go Tell The Spartans, and Prince Of Mercenaries. When I finished reading the series I remembered a reviewer's comment about H. Beam Piper's classic book Space Viking. "First you read it for the story, then you read it for the characters, then you read it to see how a civilization dies, then you read it to see how a civilization is born." This is a ripping good yarn. Unlike many writers who do military Science Fiction Jerry Pournelle has been there, done that. The battle scenes have the ring of authenticity. The details of conventional and unconventional warfare are presented well and realistically. This is not a great literary classic that will be taught in English LIt classes, but the characters are well thought out and well written for an action adventure novel. By the way, did anyone else catch the similarities between Skilly and Two Knife and Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin in the Modesty Blaise stories by Peter O'Donnell? The fall of the CoDominion and what is left of a stagnant Terran civilization is written in a manner that is disturbingly dark and realistic. This is a world that might have been. Jerry Pournele's vision of military adventures in the twilight of empire owes much to history. The notorious stadium massacre on Hadley is based on the Nike riots in Byzantium. If you want a really good description of what happened in Byzantium read David Drake's intro to his book Caught In The Crossfire, That's one of the best descriptions I've run across. In his novel Jerry fleshes out the bare facts with some political analysis which sheds some light on what may have led to the riots in Byzantium. I've always been suspicious of the official historical accounts. Finally this series shows how a civilization can rise out of the ashes of a dying one. The fears, hopes, actions, and motivations of the characters are well fleshed out. They aren't two dimensional cardboard figures. Even the antagonists have good reasons for what they do. These are people who literally have their world dying about them. All in all I recommend this series. It's a great read.
One wonders..........2001-08-04
One wonders how many nights Jerry Pournelle stayed awake to dream up the frighteningly stagnant universe that Falkenberg's Legion resides in. From the alternately-historical Codominum (realistic in it's very ponderosity) to the clarity in which he sees the changes and stasis in warfare, his visionis not as powerfull in and of itself as much as the writing that supports it. What is a deceptively simple story becomes some thing of an extended propaganda pitch (albeit one that the reader doesn't mind) in which the dirtily innocuous word "mercenary" is rendered to a shine.
By the time you finish the novels of Falkenberg's Legion (Falkenberg's Legion, Prince of Mercenaries, Prince of Sparta), you will not only want the protagonists to succeed, you will want to meet them, to fight alongside them, even though they are only words on paper.
I'm not saying that this is an English classic, to be taught in comp class. I am saying that this book has failed to disappoint me, even when I can read a page in so much as an eyeblink, because I've read it so many times that it's more familiar than the carpet I walk on.
In sum? Mr. Pournelle does not glorify war, nor the feelings that drive it. He does, however, manage to glorify humanity.

Do NOT Buy This Book. Buy The Prince Instead........2006-09-20
When I say not to buy this book, it's not because there's anything inherently wrong with it. Go Tell the Spartans is actually a great book. It's just that its content has been collected in a more complete edition. The first two books in Pournelle's novels of John Christian Falkenberg were The Mercenary, followed by West of Honor. Those two books were eventually stitched together into Falkenberg's Legion, which is now considered the first book in the series. There were three later books, Prince of Mercenaries, Go Tell the Spartans, and Prince of Spartans. The last two books were co-written with S.M. Stirling; all four were eventually collected as The Prince. Thus my advice, if you want to read Pournelle/Stirling's tales of John Christian Falkenberg - and you should, they're some of the best military SF ever written - pass on the individual books and buy The Prince instead, to have the complete series in one volume.
A good war story for a winters eve........2004-01-11
A good story, it suitably continues the saga of Falkenberg's Legion and the ending, while a little weak is still satisfying.
Just to correct a previous reviewer, the title actually comes from a memorial to the Spartan dead at the battle of Thermopylae, when the Spartan king Leonidas & his three hundred men faced an army over eight hundred thousand Persians under King Xerxes. They held for six days before falling, and bought the time for the armies of Greece to mobilise. Actually thinking about it, that is a common theme in this series, as Falkenberg and Lermentov both state that armies can never achieve anything, they can only buy time to achieve it in.
The memorial reads - "go tell the spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."
Read "Gates Of Fire" by Steven Pressfield if you want to learn more, if you liked this one, you'll probably like that one too.
haven't I seen that title before?.......2002-09-22
"Go Tell the Spartans" is the title of a very good Vietnam war flick starring Burt Lancaster. You can find it on Amazon in VHS video format.
As a book, it was published by Jove under the same title about the time the movie was released. You can find it on Amazon under the title of "Incident at Muc Wa" by Daniel Ford.

Not pure Pournelle.......2002-08-08
Any fan of Falkenberg's Legion is likely to appreciate this book. Still, it is not up to the standards of Pournelle. Its predecessor "Prince_of_mercenaries", although somewhat disjointed, as if put together from odds and ends, had a lot more power.
The impression I get is that the Falkenberg universe and characters have been turned over to a new writer, a writer who took his courses in creative writing and who well knows the US military manuals. Pournelle's work was compelling reading and could be regarded as SF (some thinking went into its writing). This "Go_tell_the_Spartans" reads like current US military doctrine overlaid with a Falkenberg veneer.
Since this is fairly competently done with only minor violations of the Falkenberg characters a fan of the 42nd can still like this book. The exceptionally poor ending is understandable: it was necessary to leave plenty of openings for its sequel.
Pournelle still delivers!.......2000-01-21
I've been reading Pournelle's books since I was 12 (I'm 39 now). His stuff is hard hitting and realistic, as a soldier I always appreciated his view of soldiers....He does not paint them romantically but realistically. He graphically illustrates the dirtiness of war especially LIC. With the addition of SM Stirling to the team it has only gotten better!

Philosophy/Political Science
Challenges the limitations of traditional secularism-now in paperback!
Religion's influence in American politics is obvious in recent debates about school prayer, abortion, and homosexuality. Many liberal secularists decry this trend, rejecting any interaction between politics and religion. But in Why I Am Not a Secularist, distinguished political theorist William E. Connolly argues that secularism, although admirable in its pursuit of freedom and diversity, too often undercuts these goals through its narrow and intolerant understandings of public reason. In response, he crafts a new model of public life that more accurately reflects the needs of contemporary politics.
"This is a first-rate book by one of the most creative political theorists in the country. As powerful as it is original." Stephen White, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
"William Connolly is one of the subtlest, boldest, and most intellectually fertile political/moral theorists now writing in the United States. His book is an incisive critique of dogmatic rationalism, an immensely valuable analysis of the psycho-social dynamics of 'identity politics'-both local and global-and a compelling argument for a strenuous and potentially self-transforming ethics of 'critical engagement.'" Barbara Herrnstein Smith, author of Belief and Resistance William E. Connolly is professor of political science at the Johns Hopkins University.

a great antidote to cynicism.......1999-08-16
Connolly once again provokes and inspires. This leading political theorist and recent winner of the prestigious Lippincott Award for his classic Terms of Political Discourse shows in this book why the impasse between secularists and theistic thinking can best be overcome through a cultivation of a new kind of pluralist enagement with others. This is a breakthrough we've all been waiting for. "Heaven is a place, a place where nothing ever happens."

Book Description
Why does agency--the capacity to make choices and to act in the world--matter to us? Why is it meaningful that our intentions have effects in the world, that they reflect our sense of identity, that they embody what we value? What kinds of motivations are available for political agency and judgment in an age that lacks the enthusiasm associated with the great emancipatory movements for civil rights and gender equality? What are the conditions for the possibility of being an effective agent when the meaning of democracy has become less transparent? David Kyuman Kim addresses these crucial questions by uncovering the political, moral, philosophical, and religious dimensions of human agency. Kim treats agency as a form of religious experience that reflects implicit and explicit notions of the good. Of particular concern are the moral, political, and religious motivations that underpin an understanding of agency as meaningful action. Through a critical engagement with the work of theorists such as Judith Butler, Charles Taylor, and Stanley Cavell, Kim argues that late modern and postmodern agency is found most effectively at work in what he calls "projects of regenerating agency" or critical and strategic responses to loss. Agency as melancholic freedom begins and endures, Kim maintains, through the moral and psychic losses associated with a broad range of experiences, including the moral identities shaped by secularized modernity and the multifold forms of alienation experienced by those who suffer the indignities of racial, gender, class, and sexuality discrimination and oppression. Kim calls for renewing the sense of urgency in our political and moral engagements by seeing agency as a vocation, where the aspiration for self-transformation and the human need for hope are fundamental concerns.

great professional guide but not for the beginner.......2001-08-27
This is a great set of professional Italian recipes. The range is magnificent and utilizes the ingrediants to the fullest. I must warn the home cook these recipes are not designed for the casual cook,Most recipies require a solid knowledge of classical culinary technique . This book is great for expierenced home cooks to create dishes that are elevated above the ordinary italian fair. I ,as a professional Chef, found this a great resource in designing my own menu .

Hot book on hot rods.......2001-01-01
Just recieved my copy of Hot Rod Model Kits and fell in love with it. Was really suprised to read the oldest review written here. The book has some great color photos of some of the best hot rod kits ever produced. It also has a great insite into the early years of model manufacturers. This book is devoted solely to car models unlike other books which try to cover everything and may fall short. It's not a price guide but rather a look into the history of hot rod modeling. An enjoyable trip to the past.
Hot Rod Model Kits is a great resource.......2000-09-18
Terry Jessee has done an excellent job of interviewing the top people of the best modeling companies in their heyday and capturing the excitement of the 60s and 70s car modeling. I'm a collector of over 240 vintage show rod kits and to read about both the designers and the executives of those companies was fascinating.
No hot rod modeling baby-boomer's library is complete without Hot Rod Model Kits!
Pleae disregard the review at the bottom of the page ..........2000-08-29
... this book is outstanding! No, it isn't filled with pictures of unassembled plastic parts in old boxes, nor is a comprehensive listing of every "hot rod" model kit ever produced. What it IS, though, is a very well-written, researched and illustrated history of hot rod models and the domestic model kit industry. The text is filled with amusing anecdotes about what the industry was like in the 1950s and 60s (the one about the popcorn had me in stitches!) and about how the model car kits we "boomers" loved as kids (and still love today) came into being. As I said, don't let a few uninformed comments deter you from buying this excellent book. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, you'll enjoy it, and if you're a model enthusiast, you'll devour it! Great job, Terry!
Excellent History on Car Models.......2000-08-15
I've just read "Hot Rod Model Kits" by Terry Jessee. I thought it was a very informative and well written book. Granted it didn't have a story on everyone involved in Car Modeling, but that could only be done if the book was written in several volumnes.
The book brought back a lot of memories and answered a lot of questions that I had. I only got back into car modeling hobby about a year ago after about a twenty year layoff.Mr Jessee's book and articles in "Scale Auto Enthusiast Magazine" has made my come back much or enjoyable. THANKS TERRY !!
Listen up, all you car guys...........2000-05-06
Something to consider--this book is NOT a collector's guide. It wasn't meant to be. Rather, as part of MBI's successful series of Enthusiasts' Color Galleries, the book is designed to be a nostalgic memory about the early days of the plastic model car hobby. What we did was interview John Mueller(AMT), Roger Harney (Monogram), Jim Keeler (Revell), and designers and R&D people from the companies to find out how the kits were conceived and designed. Then we talked with Don Emmons, and Keeler, and Bob Paeth, who wrote the articles for "Rod & Custom" and "Model Car Science" about building better hot rod models. And we interviewed Ed Roth and Tom Daniel and George Barris about their experiences with the model companies. Then some of the best model builders in the country contributed 80+ color photos of built examples of some of those old kits. This is a look back for kids whose car hobbies started with models in the '50s, '60s, and '70s. If you're looking for pictures of box art and unassembled parts, Rick Polizzi's "Classic Plastic" or Thomas Graham's "Greenberg Guides" are your source. If you want to remember the old days when you spent hours in your room or out in the garage building models and dreaming about cars you'd like to own, then this is your book. Where's the kits? We BUILT 'em, just like we did 40 years ago. This is not a book for collectors of unbuilt plastic kits. It's a book for guys who love cars.

Top Secret letters. There's codes, hidden messages, and
dots with letters. Other chapters are interesting too. This
book has six chapters in all. Chapter 3 is Paper Capers,

4 is called Writing from the Road. When you are traveling,
this book teaches you interesting ways to write about your

Fonthill : The Home of Henry Chapman Mercer--An American Architectural Treasure in Historic Bucks County, Pennsylvania
ASIN: 0964304848 |
Book Description
In 1908, Henry Mercer wrote and published at his own expense this guidebook to the various tiles and mosaics in the Pennsylvania Capitol so that visitors could read and appreciate the work as they strolled through the corridors and the great rotunda. Each mosaic had a significant story to tell and Mercer thought the story of the tiles and his own artistic intentions had to be communicated. Unavailable for many years, this newly reprinted guidebook is a useful tool in understanding the history of the Keystone State, as well as a record of this very important architectural masterpiece.
Customer Reviews:
Where are the tiles located?.......2007-09-14
Black and white pictures of tiles. Not one picture of overall views of where and how the tiles fit into the Capitol decor.

Customer Reviews:
Great Beginner's Book.......2006-09-12
Good book for beginners. I use it to teach a community college introductory Photoshop Class (along with the Illustrator equivalent). It has exercises for each chapter that are outlined step by step. There are a couple of "design" exercises which provide a more creative opportunity for students rather than just doing more pre-set exercises. (However, most of the book is pre-set exercises though).
If you are beyond beginner level, however, you probably don't need this book.
Excellent Photoshop™ Book!.......2004-08-26
This book is a great resource for any Photoshop user. Excellent buy! Great step-by-step examples and a full color example section. Awesome book! If you are a Photoshop™ user, Buy this Book! 5 Stars!!
