I was proven wrong! Impotence CAN work in a romance novel!.......2007-06-06

After reading the pitiful farce of Sally Mackenzie's "The Naked Earl" with an impotent romance "hero" I was SOOOOO loathe to attempt another book with that plot device. However, as usual, Ms. Putney addresses a sensitive topic with eloquence and skill. Ian's reasons for believing his impotence were long-term are understandable, as were his feelings associated with it. He is a kind, caring, honorable and loving hero who is also filled with self-doubt, suffering from severe physical effects of his imprisonment, and is stuck in a depressive state.

The only reason I couldn't give this book 5 stars was because of the heroine. I just couldn't quite accept Laura's level of "emotional trauma" manifesting itself into a fear of sexual relationships. Even if her reasoning that passion would cause "madness" is accepted, then she would choose to marry someone who wouldn't cause ANY passionate response in her at all -- not just someone who wouldn't cause a SEXUALLY passionate response. While the attachment to the sexual aspect of it seems to be explained by Laura witnessing a particularly impassioned sexual encounter by her parents, that doesn't seem to be enough of a catalyst to put her off sex entirely. I don't know, it just didn't sit right with me. I also felt that she didn't do enough to reassure Ian that he didn't rape her. I felt so bad for him that he had to feel that burden on top of all the others he suffered from.

I liked Kamala, and I enjoyed the advice and guidance she gave to Laura. She seemed like a very mature and wise woman, even if I personally would want to fillet my husband if he kept concubines. ;) I liked the sub-romance with Meera. She was a spunky woman with great personality. I liked seeing Mikahl as a father. I would love to see a story about Ian's brother David.

I guess I just plain like Ms. Putney's books, this included.

"Veils of Silk" was just not for me. I didnt connect with the characters at all. I thought that Ian's issues were justifiable, but the reasons behind Laura's troubles,I thought, were just stupid. I can understand being upset over her father's death and all of that, but refusing intimacy because of her parents torrid relationship was just such a weak plot device. I also just couldnt get into the setting of this book at all. I couldnt finish this story...so why not 1 star? Its a Mary Jo Putney. I have many of her books and think that she is brilliant,unfortunately, "Veils of Silk" just fell flat.

Veils of Silk (the entire triology) was as about as average a romance series as one can get. I was glad to have it finally come to an end! I thought overall the series was predictable and boring which left a tired taste in my mouth. I, doubt that I will be buying any more books by Mary Jo Putney anytime soon, I, was that disappointed I'm sorry to say!

A moving love story with adventure!.......2002-12-06

This novel, the last of the "Silk" trilogy is a wonderful read. The main character, Ian Cameron,a British officer assigned to India, has been imprisoned and tortured in "The Black Well" in Arabia and recently freed by his sister and her husband. He returns to India a broken man, having lost his eye and his sexual function. To make matters worse, his fiancee has married another man. While in India, Ian learns from his brother that he has unexpectedly become the Baron Falkirk, and needs to return to Scotland. Still depressed, Ian remains in India to deliver a bible written by a Russian with whom he shared his imprisonment. The Russian was later executed, and Ian promised to give Pytor (the Russian) his bible to his niece, Laura (who is also in India). Ian finds Laura in her own private misery, having just lost her stepfather, and notices how she is averse to men being attracted to her. In a bold move, he tells her of his impotence and proposes a marriage of convenience without sexuality, but with fidelity. Laura agrees,although Ian is in the dark as to why she wants no part of sex.

What follows is their marriage, and journey through India to tie up loose ends. This novel has a lot of historical detail about India, the culture, and political problems along the Khyber Pass.
Laura and Ian find themselves in some Indian intrigue, as well as deciphering the coded secrets of the bible Pytor left behind. During this time, Ian finds his impotence was only temporary and now is in a bind. He is attracted to Laura but feels guilty about breaking his promise. Overall, the way they both come to terms with the sexuality issue is interesting and becomes romantic as they do fall in love.

One of MJP strongest suits is that she addresses issues atypical in the romance industry, such as depression and impotence. She is unafraid to push the boundaries of historical romance fiction. In my opinion, this puts her in class that is a cut above the usual.

Overall, this novel is very enjoyable. However, be prepared for lots of secondary Indian politics and intrigue.

A Phule goes to the casino- Phule's Paradise.......2007-09-13

General Outline:
In the second book of the Phule's company series, Phule and his company come into the sights of General Bliztreig when there normal CO takes a vaction. He assigns them to prevent the hostile take over of the Fat Chance Casino, hoping that they will manage to make fools of themselves in the spot light. Unfortunatley he doesnt take into account a Phule's luck which includes knowing when to let everyone else do what they do best, lots of his own money, and a very loyal legion. The bad guys and everbody else are in for one grand opening.

This book is a fast and fun read, I kept wanting to turn the page to find out how the characters dealt with the next situation. I had to dock one star because it seems that this book in the series was missing just a little bit of what made the first book so great, Phule beating it through his troops and everbody else's head (usually in some way that made you laugh) that they actually useful, they just had to utilize skills they had in a constructive manner. Hopefully the next few books are just as good as this one. All in all I would recommend this to any one looking for a light adventure comedy read.

Casino crimewatch.

Yeah, if being in the military wasn't enough of an issue, having to watch over a casino rather than mess around there doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun, either. This is exactly why Phule and his now highly efficient company get sent there, as payback for showing up those who expected this whole venture to be a failure. It is just ok, really.

The second classic of Taoism.......2004-03-25

This is a very different book than the Lao Tzu. It's written in a much less poetic style, but I find Zhuangzi more readable for that reason. The style is more conversational, and well rendered into contemporary English by Burton Watson.

These inner chapters contain only the core of a much longer work. Over the 2200 years since its writing, many accretions had crept into the work, including commentaries and addenda by other authors. Watson strips those away and leaves only the central and most vivid writings. Some of those may already be familiar to today's reader. For example, this book originates the man dreaming to be a butterfly dreaming to be a man. Zhuangzi offers many more of these anecdotes, too long to be analogies but too short for fables. He also calls on the history and mythology of his time - not always distinct from each other - and creates mythology of his own, whether he meant to or not.

That mythology lived on in Chinese alchemy, when Zhuangzi's magical sages were taken as literal beings. Zhuangzhi lived on, too, in Taoism's eventual alignment with Buddhism. His cryptic, non sequitur style of answer seems to foreshadow the koans of the distinctly Chinese and Japanese schools of Buddhism.

This is a wonderful complement to the Lao Tzu. If that book is the art of enlightenment, then this is more like the practical craft. I recommend it highly to any student of eastern classics.

I must add that Zhuangzi is a more recent romanization of "Chuang Tzu" - different renderings of one name. It is easy to become confused and think that the two were different writers. It is especially confusing since Watson published this same material many years ago under the "Chuang Tzu" spelling, and now as "Zhuangzi." While I have the highest respect Burton's scholarship, I think that this difference-without-a-difference should be made more explicit.

carving figureheads & other nautical designs.......2002-09-07

I am quite torn on this book. It has some good ideas, and the project sections in the beginning of the book are very complete. However, the second half of the book is a different story. As you are rushed through the carvings, critical details and views are left out, some of the directions become unclear and confusing due to a poor flow in writing and bad use of verbiage, and the authors even contradict themselves on their woodcarving techniques. If you are a beginning woodcarver, be wary, you might end up a bit lost. Even though the book is a bit lacking, it may still be worth it as a reference book if you are interested in nautical carving.

Lovely rose designs.......1999-11-11

There are three sheets of heavy white plastic of 11 different rose patterns. Some are graceful sprays that could be used for borders, and some are single flowers - some in full-bloom and some just buds. Anything you might want is probably here. You can also use portions of the designs with success.
