Customer Reviews:
One of Lightman's lesser works.......2006-03-30
If you have read "Reunion" or "Einstein's Dreams", you'll be quite upset with this novel.
It seems rather limited in its scope, and is lacking metaphor like Lightman's other works. He has developed as a writer since this book, however. Don't let this one discourage you from exploring his other wonderful novels.
Lightman is a marvelous writer.......2005-07-01
I would probably give this novel 4 stars, but I'm giving it 5 to boost up its average. Do ignore the other negative reviews. Though the plot of the story is by no means extraordinary, Lightman makes up for it with his elegant prose. His writing is poetic, subtle, and sensual. Artistic rationality. I would read his writing for the turn of the phrases, for the cadences of the speech.
This falls short.......2004-12-20
This book is a novel about Bennett Lang, a scholar of theoretical physics, and is told in short vignettes about his life, in terms of his relationships. These are in the form of relationships with teachers, lovers, friends and colleagues.
While the book purports to be a novel, as opposed to how skillfully and beautifully Einstein's Dreams was told in short, distinct and separated vignettes, it doesn't have the main aspect that we expect in a novel, which is that we expect to be able to connect the dots in the story to form a line of plot. While I think this book has something to offer in terms of some of its ideas on academia, ambition and relationships, they are not presented cohesively enough to make themselves known in a real and felt way for the reader.
Around 10 pages from the end of this book, I asked my husband, "Will we find out what this is ABOUT soon?" I think it would be more effective if it were more definitely divided a la "Einstein's Dreams" or more overtly connected, in the form of a more traditional novel. I would recommend skipping this one, and picking up "Einstein's Dreams" if you haven't already. That is a beautiful book!
A collection of pointless unrelated short stories.......2002-11-11
This is not a novel but a collection of pointless, unrelated short stories. Good Will Hunting it ain't. To find out about physicists read Feyman's autobiographies or Radiance.
The Benito is a superpartner to Einstein's Dreams.......2002-09-26
Good Benito seems to have been somehow overlooked amid the attention to other Alan Lightman greats like Einstein's Dreams and The Diagnosis. That's unfortunate, since Benito shares equally with those two books in its ability to linger and continue growing larger in your mind long after reading it. This one has the curious twist of centering on an alter ego of the author, as with Orson Scott Card's "Lost Boys," with parallels eerily close enough to make you wonder how much or how little the author is taking liberties with biographical experiences. To see for yourself, compare fictional Bennett Long's breakthrough in globular cluster dynamics in Benito, with real-life Alan Lightman's breakthrough in globular cluster dynamics in the Review of Modern Physics (Volume 50, page 437, published 1978).
As such, the novel stands as much a creative quasi-autobiography as an apological defense for leaving a profession in physics. For Bennett strives constantly for a rational universe capable of becoming well-understood. But while his study of physics delightfully rewards this instinct, the vicissitudes of human life and the mysteries of human behavior are far more ambiguous and troubling. This plays out almost in a series of vignettes not unlike Einstein's Dreams in structure, with serial encounters and comraderies punctuated by modernist episodes of detail-laden solitude. A pot-smoking MIT roommate, a brilliant but estranged childhood friend, a gambling-addicted uncle, a compassionate nanny, and a harried astronomer, among others, all puzzle Bennett with their irrational motivations. The novel is book-ended by the most notable subjects: the last is a beautiful and talented but implacably narcissist lover, while it begins with the most incomprehensible of all possible crazies in Bennett's world: a great physicist devoid of ego. The cumulative exploration of the limits of human reason is tied up nicely at the conclusion, wherein Bennett and his nephew float on a fishing boat amid an incoming fog and test their reactions to feeling lost in the blank shroud of human existence. Lightman's writing style conveys profound insight with sparse dialogue offset by revealing details of action and form. The questions it raises are subtle to the point of seeming to arise spontaneously in the reader's mind. An obliquely haunting story.

Customer Reviews:
I guess you either like it or you don't.......2006-01-18
In reading the reviews before I purchased this book, I almost didn't buy it, but I decided everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It wasn't the greatest book I've read, but it wasn't the worst, believe me they are out there.
Anyway, I liked Jane, she was self-assured and strong in the areas she was most comfortable in and those that made her second guess herself, she became her own worst enemy. I liked Hellion, he was your typical rake. This is a good read, two lonely people from different sides of the social spectrum, finding each other and falling in love. I guess that's what we all wish could happen.
A lot of fun.......2005-10-13
I liked this book. The plot was familiar but the characters managed to make it unique. Hellion was a rake but he possessed a genuine understanding of his failings and a ability to laugh at himself. Jane is capable of forging her own path, without the assitance of others, but she still has a hint of vulnerbility.
The chemistry seemed to work well and the romance was sweet without being cloying.
All in all a good read.
Not The Strongest Read..........2005-10-11
Ms. Raleigh's latest effort "Some Like It Wicked" was not the strongest read in the world but it did have it's moments where it entertained. The problem that I found with this read was the fact that modern day thoughts and ideas kept popping up. This was derailing for the reader.
Jane Middleton has gone to London for the season with the hopes of finding a husband. This unremarkable girl knows her short comings and won't let them stand in her way. So when the perfect chance to finally be noticed presents itself, Jane is smart enough to act on it. The fact that she has to make Hellion Caufield the Ton's biggest rake help her is little to no big deal. She has something he needs, he has something she wants...what could be easier?
Hellion is now in dun territory and his prospects are looking rather dim. He has no desire to enter the marriage mart and he finds the young marriageble misses less than...inspiring. So when plain Jane comes to him with a shocking business deal his first answer is no way...but Jane is fresh, and unafraid to admit to her faults and the jade finds himself being drawn to the very thing he doesn't want. A romance. But will helping Jane help him or will he find himself in more trouble than he thought possible?
Jane and Hellion had the potential of being wonderful characters but Ms. Raleigh just didn't cash in all of the potential that was there. Add to this the concept of a regency miss traveling to London sans chaperone, attending balls and other society functions sans chaperone, and having a head for business (okay not that big of a deal but still) and you get the picture of modern day thoughts going into this historical read. In the end this is not a read I'd avoid as Ms. Raleigh is a fine storyteller but this effort was lackluster in attempt and execution.
Official Reviewer for Romance Design
Just my opinion.......2005-10-06
This is the first book I've read by Deborah Raleigh but I can say it won't be the last.
I believe her characters are well drawn and it's nice to see a heroine strong enough to take care of herself and bold enough to proposition London's most notorious rake. It's also a treat to have the hero fall in love with the heroine's "qualities" instead of her ravishing beauty.
Their relationship wonderfully demonstrates the belief that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I believe that is what romance is all about.
So for anyone intersted in reading a witty, sexy, and sincere romance...don't hesitate to pick this one up!
a very disappointing read.......2005-09-27
Deborah Raleigh's "Some Like It Wicked" was a truly disappointing read for me. I cannot say whether it was because the plot was executed in a rather lackluster manner, or whether it was because it was full of cliches, or whether it was because every chapter started out with a "Dear Diary" entry which I found irritating (how many Regency-era diaries really started with a "Dear Diary" entry for goodness sake?)
The daughter of a cit and an aristocrat (and herself a businesswoman), twenty-three year old Jane Middleton has decided that it is time she married; and so (without any introductions, connections or chaperone) Jane makes for London, sure that her immense wealth will allow her entree to the ton, and where she thinks she will be able to find a sensible husband who will be willing to overlook her lack of good looks and her background for her wealth. To her chagrin, Jane finds herself being quite overlooked by the young blades and soon finds herself consigned to being a wallflower. And then one night, while at a ball, she overhears a conversation that gives her an audacious idea. "Hellion" Cauldfield, a dashing rogue much sought after by the London drawing room hostesses, is in need of funds: he was his uncle's heir; but the old man has married a young wife in hopes of fathering a son, and the Hellion's creditors have been dogging his footsteps ever since. Hellion needs to get some money soon or else he will end up in prison. Jane's proposition to Hellion is that he help her become fashionable (by conducting a flirtation with her) for money to pay off his creditors. And while Hellion is leery about accepting Jane's proposal, he finds himself agreeing to this plan. What Jane hadn't counted on, however, was her unexpected susceptibility to the handsome rogue's seductive ways. Very quickly she realises that she will have to protect her vulnerable heart all else end up as another of Hellion's casualties...
The plot of "Some Like It Wicked" is one that many romance readers would be familiar with. And while there is nothing wrong with an author using an oft rendered storyline, most authors usually add a little twist here and there, or else give us characters that are memorable, likable and engaging. This really didn't happen here. Which was a shame because Deborah Raleigh had provided both Jane and Hellion with backgrounds (both led lonely childhoods because of who their parents were) that would have made this book a much deeper and more complex read. As it stands, the book follows along the very predictable lines of Hellion trying to seduce Jane into compliance and her, resisting him every inch if the way, until a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING develops between them. Fortunately, Ms Raleigh works around this plot gambit quickly so that the two talk things through and work things out. The thing that really grated though was how the author could have allowed for her heroine to think that she could just turn up in London sans chaperone, connections and introductions and actually partake in the festivities that constitute the Season? Did Jane grow up in a vacuum perhaps? And even if Jane's mother had died before imparting any knowledge about the ways of the ton to her daughter, shouldn't the fact that Jane had grown up neither being excepted by her father's friends nor her mother's relatives have given Jane a hint that it would not be so easy to crash the ton?
Were there any pluses then to "Some Like It Wicked?" Well, I rather liked Jane in spite of the dire diary entries. In spite of being a very sensible and capable young woman, Jane had a very vulnerable side. And the author did a first rate job of showing this in Jane's confused reactions and feelings for Hellion. (Hellion as a character was pretty much the stock rogue/rake-with-the-heart-of-gold hero). It was just a shame that the book was really worthy of a heroine like Jane.

Customer Reviews:
Comic writing at its worst.......2007-09-16
Mindhunter is a perfect example of why comics have never really been accepted as a legitimate form of art. The artwork isn't bad, but the writing and story are absolute rubbish. From beginning to end, I had trouble just figuring out what the heck was going on. It's a struggle to connect the logic from one frame to the next. It's as if the writers just decided to throw in every sci-fi cliche they could think of and hoped it all worked out in the end. This book is supposed to be a sequel to Overkill, the first book featuring the Darkness, Witchblade, Aliens and Predator, but there is no continuity at all between the two books. The only reason one should buy Mindhunter (even the title doesn't make sense) is if you have to have all the books featuring your favorite character. Otherwise, save your money. Well, I suppose if you're interested in seeing Sara Pezzini in her weakest and most pathetic form, that would be another reason to pick it up. My advice: steer clear.
Awful, yech!.......2007-03-11
I don't know much about Darkness or Witchblade. And I didn't learn too much about them from this. What I did learn is that David Quinn wrote a story that was awful from beginning to end. I still can't figure out what happened. Was it all in their minds? Were the Aliens being mind-controlled? WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON???
Terrible.
They have to team up again!.......2002-10-01
Sarah's Witchblade and The Darkness are as different as night and day. However, they must team up with bizzard murders happen. Unknown to them though, the Predators are playing with them.
Who will/can win?
My only real gripe is that it needed to be just a little longer to smooth out the edges of the story more.

Book Description
This book, now re-issued with a new introduction by Mary Boyce, is the first attempt to trace the continuous history of the faith from the time it was preached by Zoroaster down to the present day-a span of about 3,500 years. First taught among nomads on the Asian steppes, Zoroastrianism became the state religion of the three great Iranian empires. With the conquest of Iran by the Muslim Arabs, Zoroastrianism lost its secular power but continues to survive as a minority faith.
Customer Reviews:
Zoroastrianism, the relegion of great Persian Empires.......2007-05-20
This book is a detailed history of Zoroastrianism from its begining 3700 hundred years ago to 1970s. I found the narrative interesting and informative and Ms. Boyce's treatment of this great relegion objective and unprejudiced. She informs on the strength and weakneses of the theology and the practitioners of the relegion. I highly recommend the book for learning about Zoroasterianism.
This book impressed me with its excellence.......2006-01-26
This book is nothing short of a tour-de-force! In this fascinating book, Professor Emeriti of Iranian Studies (retired), Dr. Mary Boyce (b. 1920) looks at the beliefs and practices of the Zoroastrian faith, as it has evolved from its beginnings through to the late 1970s. Along the way, the reader is treated to an in-depth understanding of Persian and Iranian history, how it affected Zoroastrianism, and how Zoroastrianism affected Persian and Iranian history.
Now, after having poured out such praise on the book, I must admit to its one great weakness. The book was written in the late 1970s, but before the overthrow of the Shah of Iran, and the rise to power of fundamentalist Islam. As such, the book sees the greatest threat to Zoroastrianism in Iran as being an "increase in secularism," rather than the rise of Muslim oppression that it has actually been subjected to.
But, that said, this is a great book on Zoroastrianism, one that really gives you a good understanding of its history (up to the late 1970s) and beliefs and practices. If you really want to understand Zoroastrianism, then I would say that this is the best book to get. This book impressed me with its excellence, and I am quite confidant that it will impress you in the same way. I give this book my highest recommendations!
Just Right!.......2003-07-20
Goldilocks would like this book. It is perfect for the average reader as far as length, depth, and width of coverage of this topic. Not too deep and not too shallow but just right! In addition to general features of Zoroastianism it also has a large amount of information on ancient Persia as well as particularly strong emphasis on the usually neglected Parthian and Sasanian cultures. The coverage of the Parsis in the Indian subcontinent is also very well done. Highly recommended for the general reader who wants an accessible overall view of Zoroastrianism.
Great Book but the Title is a bit of a misnomer.......2002-09-28
This is an increcdible book about the history and development of the Zoroastrian religion from ancient times to the present. However, it is not simply an explanation of Beliefs and Practices. If you are unfamiliar with Zoroastrianism I suggest you read Nigosian's book THe Zoroastrian Faith first and then read this one. Boyce's book is the clearest and most well researched work on Zoroastrian religion and is a must for all interested in the relative subject matter.

It's not just a cookbook........2002-06-03
by Molly Conway, 15
Teen Editor
...
My friend Rebecca is a super-vegan. I have the utmost respect for her and her family of super-vegans because it baffles my mind as to how they do it. Whenever Rebecca and I have enough of a lull in our schedules to eat lunch together, I'm in for it if any part of my meal comes from "some poor animal." The speech usually starts with, "Did you know?" and continues with Rebecca trying desperately to prove to me that all of the world's problems are my fault because of what I'm eating. Rebecca's argument is rehearsed and usually flawless, which is why I enjoy so immensely trying to prove her wrong, but deep down I know that she is absolutely right on most points. And that's why I've eliminated red meat from my diet.
If you happen to be in the same situation as me - that is, questioning your dietary identity - you might want to pick up this book. It's not just a cookbook. It also includes solid information about vegetarianism, weighs the pros and cons, gives sources for more info, and, here's the best part, nutritional information for every recipe. Plus it's geared specifically for teens so that all of the recipes are quick and easy, and it even offers tips on talking to your relatives and friends about your dietary choices.
But even if you aren't planning on switching your diet completely over to the green side, this is still a good book to check out. After all, according to Rebecca, if we all reduce our meat consumption by 10 percent and use the surplus grain we would have fed to livestock to feed people in Third World countries, we would have solved world hunger already.

We are extremely impressed!.......2005-11-26
My husband and I know one of the authors, Tim Mierzwa, personally. He told us in August of 2005 that he had a book coming out about fishing lures and other equipment. We weren't sure what to think. But when we received the book recently, my
husband and I were extremely impressed on the detail, the photos, explanations and layout of the book! My husband enjoys
fishing and I don't, but BOTH of us are enjoying the book
immensely! I am now ordering another copy for the outdoor club
we live in to share with the members. For anyone interested in
fishing, collecting fishing gear and/or the history and value of fishing gear, this is THE book to own!

Book Description
BRANDY
She's a Grammy-nominated songtress.
An award-winning television actress.
A budding movie star.
A model.
A role model.
And she's only nineteen.
Here's the remarkable story of Brandy, America's youngest, hottest solo act. From her dreamy days as a Carson, California, schoolgirl who longed to sing like Whitney Houston, to her glory days as a globe-trotting young woman who sang with Whitney Houston, Real-Life Cinderella is the incredible fairytale of Hollywood's most admired, influential teen.
In this loving tribute, fully illustrated with fabulous photographs, you'll get an in-depth portrait of Brandy--both public and private: the girl whose amazing hit single (with Monica) "The Boy Is Mine" set the summer of 1998 to a seductive beat; the beloved star of Moesha; the family that keeps her grounded; the causes that earn her devotion; and the men who catch her eye, including NBA sensation Kobe Bryant, Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris, R&B star Usher, and rapper Mase.
Brandy is living proof that dreams do come true--and Real-Life Cinderella may just inspire you to go after yours!

The Greatest Entertainer of The Modern Era.......1998-10-23
Brandy is a better singer than Maria Callas, a better actress that Katherine Hepburn, and a bigger humanitarian than Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana or Mother Teresa. Her romance with the studly Mase stirred my heart; the part where she talks about McDonalds made me hungry. Brandy is a magical woman, the greatest entertainer of our time. I hear that in Romania, they play her records to terminally ill babies and they are miraculously cured. It's too bad you have to be dead to get your picture on a postage stamp because if anyone deserves it, Miss Brandy Norwood does.
