Book Description
Alice Andrews is living in Manhattan, working as a reporter in Newark, and trying to forget the smooth-talking investment banker she thought was Mr. Right. When she meets Jack Russworm, a handsome, Harvard-educated doctor, things start looking up. But as their romance heats up, their differences bubble to the surface.
Benilde Little offers us a delicious, closely observed, eye-opening look at the world of upper-class Black Manhattan in a novel that is alternately humorous and touching, sexy and bold.

Intriguing read, excellent for Black Book Clubs........2006-12-28
I re-read this book recently, after discovering that I remembered very little about it except that it was a very good book. Now that I am closer to the same age as the main character in the novel, Alice, I see more and more how interesting and thought provoking this novel really is. Little manages to squeeze a very big and loaded subject into a cohesive and provocative story line.
SUMMARY: Alice is in love with Jack. Alice was raised by a poor, working class family, although her education and demeanor might suggest otherwise to the "black elite." Jack's name alone makes him famous in the circles that matter -- he is from a black family of doctors that has been wealthy for generations. While Alice is struggling with who she is and who she wants to be, and with her shame of where she comes from, she also has trouble understanding Jack, because their backgrounds and perspectives are so different. Will love overcome their differing backgrounds and expectations? With neither family pedigree nor "good hair," will Jack's "circle" even except Alice?
I think that perhaps this book should be read together with NAPPILY EVER AFTER, another great novel with a similar theme -- black women freeing themselves from the tight, inflexible BAP (Black American Princess) mold.
loved it.......2006-05-18
I had to read this for a literature course and was thrilled I picked this from the list. I thoroughly enjoyed this story as i felt it was well written-the characters were well rounded and you got a sense of who they were. Also the images were made clear as I could picture every scene in my head perfectly. The book was also fast paced and I had a hard time putting it down. I actually felt as if I was reading for pleasure and not for a class-now that's the best kind of reading!!!
A Sory of Our Time.......2005-12-11
A good book is the one when you pick it up to read you won't let it down .And I have given Benilde Little's novel, Good Hair such a chance and I am proud of my choice. Good Hair is a challenge! I really enjoyed this book...and was delighted. The story is told in first person, I narrator, point of view. It's the story of a most unlikely romance between Alice a hard working, first generation college educated sista who falls for Jack the by-product of an upper middle class, privileged AA family and a third generation doctor. As the story goes we really get to know Alice and the story seems almost autobiographical in nature as we journey with Alice from her childhood through the present as she struggles with day-to-day encounters and tries to find herself in the midst of it all. Good Hair is a well written novel, I believe. Overall Good Hair is a good read. I received this book as a present, from a diplomat friend of mine.
Ms. little provides a few interesting insights into the black middle class, she has glimpses of good writing including the opening page or two. Alice is revealed as a multi-dimensional character throughout the novel. The relationship between Jack and Alice is some how cold, the kind that one can't attribute as stuff of love, or even lust, or passion.
Ms. Little takes me to the world of anxiety love. Her characters are wonderful. This author has a knack of talent writing, by which I mean she doesn't drag a story along, it moves at a fast and feverish pace. The characters are all new and exciting; her opinions of others are very familiar. Same as one encounter in daily life. I loved all the characters. The conversations are so so real that I feel as witness. Cheers to this author. She has talent and I hope she will be a worthy name in the coming years. Little shows skill in creating complex, well rounded characters.
Alice Andrews.......2004-01-08
I really enjoyed the book. I liked how it was a romance between two people who came from two different worlds. I really loved the main character Alice Andrews, because I could relate to the issues she went through in the story, and these are issues that us black women really go through. Issues in the story such as sexual abuse, low self-esteem, insecurity, and being hurt by men. And what I really liked is that even though Jack came from a well-off family and he cheating on Alice, he seemed like a man who really loved her regardless and he understood her, and he was letting her know that he wasn't going nowhere.

Great read.......2004-01-30
I started this book and put it down after a couple of pages. Then, I picked it up 2 days ago and I couldn't put it down. Both the heroine and the hero are very likeable. It's unlike most other Harlequin's that I've read.
Do not waste your time and money.......2003-12-02
Due to the reviews, I bought the book and regreted it. I did not like the couple and I do not feel that there was a love story since I never perceive the chemistry between the leads nor love or passion.
Best of Greek Tycoon's Series.......2003-11-18
Back Cover: The Greek tycoon demands his bride! Savannah has returned to Greece with the intention of making her peace with the Kiriakis family. But Leiandros Kiriakis still believes the lies about Savannah and is set on making her pay for the past. Savannah is reluctant when Leiandros demands that she share his home. As for Leiandros, now he has Savannah right where he wants her. And in a short time he'll be giving her an ultimatum: if she doesn't want to lose everything she holds most dear, she'll agree to be his wife!
Savannah is sorely misjudged by her prideful in-laws, mainly because her husband, Dion told them a pack of lies about her even leading them to believe that her daughter's were not his. After 3 years of Dion's abuse Savannah leaves Greece and goes back to Georgia to be with her aunt. Three years later Dion dies in a car accident, one year after his death, his cousin Leiandros sends her a letter demanding the presence of her and the girls in Greece or no monthly allowance. Leiandros is the head of the Kiriakises, his pregnant wife Petra was riding with Dion when he crashed his car and was also killed-now Leiandros wants justice. Savannah owes him for all he has lost including the 7 years he's struggled with his forbidden desire for his cousin's scheming, heartless, hateful, dishonest widow. Author does an excellent job; you will not be able to put this one down. Great Harlequin Presents series thus far.
The Greek Tycoon's Ultimatum.......2003-10-18
I enjoy the Greek Tycoons series from Harlequin Presents and this new author,Lucy Monroe, just blew me away. I haven't found if this is her first and only book but if it is she has done an excellent job of fitting right in there with well known authors.
Savannah is straight talking in her quest of keeping her daughters safe from hurt.Greek Tycoon, Leiandros thinks family is everything.Their ideals clash when so many lies have been told but both support each other.
Lucy Monroe does the job of a seasoned writer.......2003-10-08
WOW!! Lucy Monroe is a true writer. She brings her story "The Greek Tycoon's Ultimatum" to life with the easy of a seasoned author. You can't help but love Savannah Kiriakis and Leiandros Kiriakas as you watch their journey to love. The characters are completely believable and as you get to know them you expect certain behaviors and Lucy delivers them. A wonderful read that will not let you put it down, and leave wanting her next book. If you have not pick up "The Greek Tycoon's Ultimatum" yet get out there and do it now, you won't regret it.
Book Description
In the field of science fiction, the work of Philip K Dick is unparalleled. His novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? became the classic science-fiction film Blade Runner. His short story, "The Minority Report," was recently adapted for the screen by Stephen Spielberg and stars Tom Cruise. Dick's appeal and influence has reached the world over, creating the standard for the literary science fiction novel.
In November of 1982, six months before the author's death, journalist Gwen Lee recorded the first of several in-depth discussions with Philip K. Dick that continued over the course over the next three months. These extraordinary interviews are filled with the wit and aplomb characteristic of Dick's writing, helping make What If Our World Is Their Heaven? not only an engaging read, but a unique and compelling historical document. It will be a must read for anyone interested in the field of science fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Astoundingly little content for the price.......2007-02-15
PKD is fascinating as always, but at $17 I expect a lot more than 20 pages worth of content clumsily spread across 200 pages via narrow paper, wide margins, huge type, blank pages and double-spacing. This is a magazine article pretending to be a book! For your best bang-for-buck PKD insights, save your pennies for Sutin's excellent Divine Invasions.
PHILIP K. DICK Lives On.......2005-01-23
Was it chance or fate that led Gwen Lee to record these last words of PKD?
Whatever, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to probe the depths of the PKD spirit. Here Dick laid out the plotline and central character, Ed Firmley, for his next great novel, THE OWL IN DAYLIGHT. Who needs more of it actually written? Any reader can fill in the blanks. Dick was taking the next giant step to solving the puzzle of man's existence here on earth. By positing the existence of this Nanoman race from a planet without music or sound, Dick set up the premise for another brilliant novel.
The very notion that an other world Nanoman, could implant himself via biochip into Ed Firmley's brain is ground breaking. That this would transform this hack musician into a Beethoven like composer is a light year ahead of man's current understanding of himself. What a gas that Firmley would then make the choice to allow himself to implanted into the brain of this celestial Entity. Yes, Firmley did have to exchange this puny earthly existence for a world constructed from rainbow colors. But to him it was like dying and going to heaven.
Meetings with a remarkable man.......2003-04-25
Two things were always true with Philip K. Dick: first, that whenever you looked in the direction in which he waves his wand, nothing was as it seems. And second, that whenever you looked at the magician himself, what you saw was what you got.
In this collection of transcripts of taped interviews, made with Dick during what turned out to be his last weeks on earth, we are treated to the unedited, off-the-cuff ramblings of the master. Are they worth it? They are, on at least four counts.
The first pleasure is just hearing his voice again. The second is learning various little bits that we didn't know before: about his reactions to seeing the first rushes of _Blade Runner_, which was just going into editing (he was pleased and enthusiastic, and not at all put out that the whole Mercerism theme was excised.) And about the book he was planning to begin next, The Owl in Daylight. The third pleasure is watching his creative process unfold as he massages the material for _The Owl_, plotting it and composing it right before our eyes. And the fourth is the confirmation that he is as quirky, as compassionate, as obsessed, as unpredictable, as brilliant, when speaking ad libitum as he was in his written work. What we saw in his novels turns out to be what his friends always got.
Other major themes include his 1974 "pink light" experience, and his relationship with the characters in his last novel, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer.
For the completist fan, this short book is a delightful find, and one worth snapping up quick since there's no telling how long it'll be in print. But for those with only a few PKD novels under their belts, and a curiosity about what made him tick, there's a far more indispensable volume to check out first, namely the extracts from his diaries which were published in 1991 as "In Pursuit of Valis: Selections from the Exegesis".
Fascinating- It's like being in a room with Philip K. Dick!.......2002-07-27
Reading this book is like sitting down to a one-on-one conversation with Philip K. Dick. His unique and surprisingly upbeat personality shines though more here than in any biography. Despite personal trials and delusions Philip K. Dick retained a sense of humor and it's fascinating to hear that come through in his own words. I appreciate the fragmented sentences and "and um's" left intact because they truly convey the atmosphere of being in a room listing to Philip K. Dick. One of the most interesting things about reading this book is seeing Philip K. Dick's momentum and thought progression as he plots out a story idea (tragically one that he never had time to finish.) His interpretation of the well-known interferences in his life from either extraterrestrial or divine sources is fascinating but somewhat brief, it seems not to overshadow his existence, but merely become another accepted aspect of it. This book brings this sci-fi legend into human terms. For those interested in Philip K. Dick's personality this book is probably the most authentic and enlightening available.
Philip K. Dick is dead, alas.......2001-09-28
...And,if you read this book you'll realize just what a crying shame it truly is...The world was cheated out of "The Owl in daylight",a book that just might have ended up being his greatest. This book,(What if our world is their Heaven?)is simply a transcription of some tape interviews PKD made shortly before his untimely death in 1982.Of course this could be seen by the cynical as an attempt by those in the late PKD's circle of friends to somehow cash in on the mystique that surrounds this enigmatic science fiction legend,Its a quick read...not terribly lengthy...but the true genius of this book is the glimpse a hardcore PKD fan can get of two things...One,"The Owl in Daylight",still in the conceptual phase at the time of his death(Oh,why oh,why'd ya have die Phil?) Two,just how quickly this man's mind worked, especially as to regards the way he wrote a novel(ABSOLUTELY mind boggling).I will say that If you haven't read the Sutin Bio,parts of PKD's exegesis and I'd say,at least 10 or so of his key works you may not get a whole lot of enjoyment out of this book,But a real delight for the hardcore fan as well as a heartbreaking reminder of all the great books we could of had in the last 20 years if Phil was still around.

Frederick Buechner, a Presbyterian minister and a prolific author of more than two dozen works of fiction and nonfiction, uses writing as one way to comfort him, especially in times of nostalgia. The Longing for Home is a collection of musings on the loss of home and what he calls a universal homesickness. The book explores the meaning of home and examines ways to find a safe haven. Loved ones and natural beauty are highly valued, but it is mostly one's faith in Jesus that provides the most restful of places, submits Buechner in this beautiful and touching work.
Book Description
In this deeply moving book of reflection and recollection, Frederick Buechner once again draws us into his deeply textured life and experience to illuminate our own understanding of home as both our place of origin and our ultimate destination.
For Frederick Buechner, the meaning of home is twofold: the home we remember and the home we dream. As a word, it not only recalls the place that we grew up in and that had much to do with the people we eventually became, but also points ahead to the home that, in faith, we believe awaits us at life's end. Writing at the approach of his seventieth birthday, he describes, both in prose and in a group of poems, the one particular house that was most precious to him as a child, the books he read there, and the people he loved there. He speaks also of the lifelong search we are all engaged in to make a new home for ourselves and for our families, which is at the same time a search to find something like the wholeness and comfort of home with ourselves. As he turns his attention to our dreams of the heavenly home still to come, he sees it as both hallowing and fulfilling the charity and the peach of our original home.
Writing with warmth, wisdom, and compelling eloquence, Frederick Buechner once again enables us to see more deeply into the secret places of our hearts. The Longing for Home will help to bring clarity and guidance to anyone who searches for meaning in a world that all too often seems meaningless.

Revealing, honest, brilliant.......2004-03-06
Another deeply revealing, intelligent, inspiring memoir from the writer (not just "religious" writer) who best addresses spiritual matters in a way that is meaningful to me. He shares his personal experiences in a way that is comforting and helps me ponder the mystery of life. I never tire of reading Frederick Buechner.
excuse my redundancy..........2001-01-29
I agree 100% with the Thorburn review directly below mine... it's a great and accurate review. I agree especially with the comment that one should start with Buechner's excellent memoir-trilogy (listed there) before venturing into this one. And if you're still interested in Buechner, by all means, The Longing For Home will be meaningful for you at many points. Don't get me wrong, I am convinced that anything Buechner writes is definitely worth reading, it's just that this book seemed a trifle esoteric, even for a Buechnerite like myself.
I usually try to avoid subjective comments like the one I'm about to make, but I found the poetry section a bit too "on the inside" (obscure?) for me, as with the chapter entitled "Rinkitink in Oz"... I can only imagine these slices of the book as being of interest to an extremely select minority of readers. They are not "generally" appealing. But then, the chapter "Of Whipples and Wheels" had me actually consulting a map of Vermont, trying to locate the places Buechner is discussing. It was very interesting stuff (incidentally, I never did find the locations). And there are A+ insightful theological homilies in the latter chapters.
I have enjoyed all of F.B.'s writing over the years, however, this particular volume is definitely one for only the initiated and highly interested.
Deeper digging for the Buechner reader.......2000-08-23
Much of Buechner's non-fiction consists of memoirs in which he explores the presence of God in the everyday moments and journeys of his own life. Buechner's books are compelling first because he is a superb writer, and second because his life, were it reduced to a resume, is really not all that exceptional; not that different from yours or mine. That combination is Buechner's genius. He reminds us that there there is no ordinary life, and succeeds superbly in getting us each to listen for God's action in the lives each of us live.
This book is a collection of essays. It partly rewinds through experiences and events in memoirs Buechner has already published (including The Sacred Journey, Now and Then, and Telling Secrets). But it focuses on the theme of home and its theological overtones. Many characters, places and events from Buechner's life will be familiar to the Buechner reader. I don't find the writing to have the crispness and punch of his earlier memoirs. Maybe the mine of Buechner's experience is not yielding the quality of ore that it did earlier, or maybe the writing just doesn't refine it as well. This is certainly a book all Buechner fans will want to read. But if you are new to Buechner's non-fiction, start with the first three memoirs I mention above.
Longing for More!.......2000-05-02
Buechner's style so lends itself to the hesitant believer, the everyman-doubter, but brings so much hope and inspiration....who can read this and not relate?

Antique Oak Furniture adequately presents fundamentals of turn-of-the-century oak pieces, but I found it not worthwhile for valuation purposes.

Fifty years ago, the fountain pen was an expensive, and very personal, prized possession. Once deposed by mass produced ball points, the fountain pen is making an elegant return through the wood turner's art. Michael Cripps takes the reader through every step necessary to create elegant pens (fountain and ball point alike) with turned hardwood outer surfaces in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each step is illustrated from the turner's perspective with detailed color photographs. Additional instructions are provided for creating desk accessories including letter openers and magnifying glasses with beautiful hardwood handles. Ladies' pens and perfume applicators round out the text. A gallery provides a view of the finished products. This book is wonderful for turners of all skill levels., 221 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
Okay, but no real information.......2003-09-27
The book is adequate if you want a brief, step by step, follow the picture book. If you want any real information the I sugest that you find a copy of "turning pens and pencils" by Christensen and Burningham. It covers the topic in much greater detail, with a much larger gallery.
As for the details of this book. There is four pages of text, followed by a short and basic lathe section (how to use tools and the lathe) and then a 40 page section on turning the various items. This sounds impressive, but each page contains 2-4 photos with very little explination. With this book, you will be able to turn a pen quite adequately, but you will only have "enough to get by with."
Basically, it is a nice addition to your library and a good primer, but if you can have only one book, go with something else.
Photographs Galore show you how!!.......2000-09-09
I am researching information on pen turning on the wood lathe. This book is short on words, but long on beautiful full color photographs that show you how. There are pictures showing each step in the process along with a brief caption that explains the steps. The finished product is shown to depict the end result. Instructions are shown for various types of pens as well as letter openers, perfume dispenser pens, and magnifying glasses. Short sections also explain the tools and lathes that are best to use for the projects. Highly recommend this book to the beginner pen maker, or someone that wants to see the beauty of various materials used.
