Book Description

Henry "Hank" Toohey, a thirteen-year-old altar boy, is an incessant smart-ass with a deep love of life...and other four-letter words. But with his foul mouth comes a heart of gold, and he's going to need it to get through the last weekend of summer 1984.

Everyone up and down St. Patrick Street, Henry's claustrophobic Irish-Catholic block in Philadelphia -- with its seventy-eight row homes, seventy-eight skinny mile-high lawns, seventy-eight statues of saints, and seventy-eight Mondale-Ferraro signs -- knows that the Toohey family is falling apart. Henry's mailman father is having an affair with a neighbor lady right under his mother's nose. His big brother has been a drunken mess since his girlfriend died. And his little sister is counting on him to keep her laughing through it all. But Henry has a plan to pull the family back together: He'll propose to his chain-smoking fourteen-year-old girlfriend, Grace McClain, at a neighborhood wedding. To prepare, he and his ragtag group of friends pinball around the streets, making elaborate plans for his proposal, riding bikes, rating breasts, bothering the local merchants, talking trash about Mike Schmidt and Bob Seger, and kissing behind the seafood-store dumpster.

Gritty, giddy, and bursting with Henry's boundless energy, Green Grass Grace is a heart-thumping rocket ride back to adolescence that is riotously funny and tragic at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Grabs you and pulls you in.......2006-03-31

This book is fantastic! A friend of mine recommended it but said it is kind of a guy book. Well I picked up pretty fast what he meant by that, but regardless of obscenities and erections this book really has heart and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I grew up in the burbs of Philly and never got to experience city life for real. Now I have heard it all and wish I had lived there. The weird neighbors, The Catholic statues on front lawns, kids playing games in the streets as an outsider I'm jealous I never got to live that. Which is ironic because all he wants is that farm and the love he has for Grace. If you like Catcher in the Ryesque books than you'll enjoy this book as long as an occasional lewd joke doesn't bother you. I also recommend "Temple of Gold" for anyone who enjoyed both this book and Catcher in the Rye. It's not as witty as "GGG" but it is another book in what I feel is in the same genre.

5 out of 5 stars Bring it, McBride........2005-07-28

This book is a masterpiece and should be read by every Philadelphian.

As a side note, I can't help but wonder if the author is related to Bake McBride. Does any one know?

Five stars, baby, five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Homerun!.......2005-06-05

Where do I start? Shawn hit a homerun. From the start of the book he has you. A sign of a great book is if it can get you to physically react to it. Well, I found myself laughing out loud and welling up with tears of joy thanks to this beauty. Is it fiction or real? Shawn paints vivid pictures with his words. Is it about fun, family, tragedy or love? Perhaps it is about all of these topics. Nonetheless, for a get away book that keeps you reading until it is done, try this one on for size. It will please you.

4 out of 5 stars Growing up never sounded so funny.........2004-11-10

Green Grass Grace is a book with a unique feel and great personality. For Shawn McBride this was an excellent first novel and I look forward to reading more oh his book.
The story is set in Philadelphia and revolves around the lives of a group of 13 year olds. It takes you through their daily activities and the way they feel about growing up. The main character is Henry Toohey, who is a 13-year-old smart alec whose family life is crumbling around him. Although his father is having and affair, and his brother is a drunk he still keeps a positive attitude because of the one goal he has in mind, marrying his girlfriend Grace McClain. Even though the book's main character is at the center of many problems, this book is surprisingly upbeat and funny because the author's use of foul language and insight into the minds of teenage boys. Some may find the use of language and the detailed discussion of the female anatomy offensive, but they way it is used you can see that it is merely for humor. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to step back into his or her childhood and have a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't want to come to the end of this book!.......2004-09-30

Though not from Philadelphia originally, I have lived here since 1991 and live a stone's throw from the mythical St. Patrick Street in the Holmesburg section of the city. Wow do I see my neighbors being echoed in this novel (and no, I do not know and have never met the author and do not have any connection to him).

When Green Grass Grace was first published, you couldn't turn the radio on without hearing something about the novel or an interview with the auther and you couldn't open up any local publications up without reading something about it - so of course I bought it. After all, I live in Holmesburg myself and can easily identify a multitude of the businesses, landmarks and places described in the novel.

Though I love to read and usually can zip through a book in a day or two - this one took me months - not because it was hard to read - on the contrary - it was easy to read. The problem was - I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END. I savored it by reading a few pages a night - not even entire chapters. I have never done that with a book before!

I don't think there was a character in the book that I didn't want to know more about. WONDERFUL!

I look forward to hearing more from Mr. McBride and hopefully someday - Mr. Toohey.

4 out of 5 stars The Bachelor Tax.......2000-05-23

This was a very humurous idea for the story. Rosemary and Gabe are the H/H of the story. Gabe trys to get out of paying the Bachelor Tax, by proposing to someone, namely Rosemary. He's sure she will turn him down flat. Only it backfires on him and he ends up with the most unusal ready-made family this side of the Mississippi.

4 out of 5 stars "Cold Fusion" Review. DS9 episode 3 Season 8........2004-02-06

Reading the DS9 Relaunch novels? Want to learn how Nog brought Empok Nor over to DS9? If not, you can skip the story in this novel that I am reviewing. If you want to know all the intricacies, then this short story is worthwhile reading.
This is a review only for "Cold Fusion" and how it ties in with the DS9 Season 8 Relaunch novels.

I bought this SCE book not as part of the SCE collection, but for the short story, "Cold Fusion" with Lt. Nog that occurs between the events of Avatar Book 2 and Section 31:Abyss. At the end of Avatar DS9's fusion core is lost, and so Nog comes up with the idea of salvaging the fusion core from Empok Nor. It is his idea, and he wants to implement it.
What stands in his way? A group of cocky, condescending SCE engineers and an alien race based on some sort of perversion of Plato's Republic (with an elite, officer and worker classes).

DeCandido is one of my favorite Trek authors. This short story is interesting, yet I think too short to really develop much.
Those wanting to get some filler between Avatar and Abyss could read this if they choose, but they really are not missing much.

What I did like about this story is how it admittedly does make one want to know more (read more) about the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. Read as only part of the DS9 Relaunch, I really didn't care or understand about who was sleeping with who, but I bet if I was into the SCE books I'd have enjoyed this novel more...and reading about the other characters, some very interesting such as an Insectoid and a sole Bynar (who has lost his partner) definitely intrigued me into learning more about the SCE. Not to mention a brief yet comical visit by Scotty.

Although I had no background to this book, I found that both DeCandido's writing of filling in some stuff briefly and the Minipedia at the back of the book helped orientate me towards these brand new characters. I bet DeCandido was betting some people would read the story as part of a DS9 book, and hoped he could catch some more people into his SCE web...I must say I am quite interested to read more about the SCE, and just may well do so after finishing the DS9 relaunch books.

Being introduced to these characters for the first time I felt rather like Nog did. And the condescending attitude of the SCE towards a fellow Starfleet Lt. was despicable I thought. They wouldn't even hear him out, even though his plan had been approved not only by Colonel Kira, but also Commander Vaughn (a man who all respect). Right away I disliked a few of these SCE people because of their unprofessionalism.

Anyways, the story is short, involves a really cool alien race (Androssi) that I would love to see more of. I really thought that Nog would snap and tell these arrogant SC Engineers to listen to him. I really wanted him to come into his own and confront the discrimination he constantly feels for being Ferengi. In a way he does. He does offer the winning solution to their problems, but I wanted to see him explode at them. As it is, it appears he won the respect of the SCE, although I felt it was a little contrived. Granted, Keith only had 90 pages to develop all of this, but something was missing if one is to read the story as a stand-alone episode. I did find that he did a decent enough job developing (or explaining) some of the backstory to these characters.

The story itself was short, with the action very condensed. Description was good, but I just didn't feel completely into the story as if I were ON Empok Nor.

I guess I should state that my bias won me over. This is NOT a DS9 story, but an SCE story with a continuing cast. It would be like watching "Relics" (TNG) for Scotty, only to watch this other crew you know nothing of. To his credit, the author made me care somewhat for these (to me) new characters. It must have been very difficult trying to write a story that continues the development of SCE characters, while integrating Nog into it. He did a decent enough job, though something felt off. His Gateway book by comparison not only fits in with the Gateway books, but also furthers the DS9 Relaunch books. I guess I was just misguided in expecting a DS9 story when it's really a SCE story with a guest star.

One other complaint. As seen at the start of Abyss, Nog gets 9 Starfleet Captains to help out with his plan. What angered me beyond belief was how it was set up so that the captains had the option of declining or accepting the plan. DS9 is in shambles and mere days away from evacuation, yet Starfleet brass don't even bother ordering the ships to help Nog! Instead, he had to use his Ferengi skills to NEGOTIATE THE COOPERATION of one of the captains! The Captain actually had the nerve to ask, "What's in it for me?" [to help save DS9]. I was like, HOW ABOUT YOU'RE A FRIGGIN STARFLEET OFFICER!!

So, to sum up. Nog gains more confidence, though not in a way that entirely pleased me. He never really stood up for himself, which is what I wanted to see. The new alien race was awesome. Some of the SCE crew were arrogant and didn't make it easy for me to like them. Yet, the crew, especially its alien races, fascinated me. It had me thinking that I would probably enjoy the SCE series if I got into it. For this reason I give the story 4 stars (especially given the addition of the Minipedia to help people like me out).

Only read the "Cold Fusion" story if you are a perfectionist and want all the details, or if you want to get into the SCE crew. Otherwise, easily skip this and read Abyss as the continuation of Avatar.

5 out of 5 stars Continued Good Reading........2002-02-20

I can't say much in this review of Book 2 of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers that I didn't already say in my review of Book 1. That is, it's great! Well-written, believable, and very entertaining, with nods to continuity throughout. If you're not reading these, or the DS9 re-launch, then you're missing out on some great stuff.

An added bonus in the back of this publication is the S.C.E. Minipedia, written by one of the good ones, Keith R.A. DeCandido. Set up like the Star Trek Encyclopedia, it contains all you'll need to know and more about the persons, places, and things in the S.C.E. universe, which includes, of course, plenty of the canon stuff we've come to know and love. And for those of you who favor nitpicking, there's an e-mail address where you are invited to send in errors, corrections, or comments if you wish.

    Win-win, if you ask me.

4 out of 5 stars Another great short story set in the Star Trek universe!.......2002-02-09

Picking up where we left off in "Have Tech, Will Travel," this series of short stories of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers is collectively titled "Miracle Workers."

First, the "Interphase" tale is completed, and I was quite impressed with the tone and pace of the second half of the story. It had a rare amount of nostalgia to it that didn't suffer from being trite or overwrought. As always, the characters shine - again proving that in the Star Trek universe, the depth of the character is what matters, not how much screen time they might have had on the television shows or movies.

From there, while there are less stories in this package, the tales are of such high quality that you don't suffer from the lack of them. Nog, as a lieutenant from the DS9 Books set in the "Avatar" and "Abyss" timeline, guest-stars in one of the stories, and doesn't distract from the overall story. The authors really have a deft touch with these shared characters: I have never noticed a character to act out of character from previous stories - quite a feat!

The only negative I can mention from the reading was the inclusion of the "Androssi" as a villain race that the S.C.E. have previously battled - but we have never seen. It was a bit awkward, and made me wonder if I'd missed a story somewhere - the aliens were spoken of as something I should know, but no real details were given. I enjoy good backstory, but there was too much left to backstory in this case.

The inclusion of a "Minipedia" - an encyclopedia of all the information from the various stories in the S.C.E. series, and it was well received by this reader. It was good to look up minor characters and events and have them on hand.

Grab it folks, Trek fans of all kinds will be happily surprised...

    'Nathan

    5 out of 5 stars ST-SCE Book #2 Miracle Workers.......2002-02-07

To all who read Star Trek, you will find that the second SCE book to be well written and an excellent read. Starfleet Corps of Engineers journey through adventures that include rescuing a ship trapped in interphase, help Deep Space Nine get a new power core, and put together a subspace accelerator.

We have a collecton of short compact stories that being the Corps together in time pressed situations and get results. Perils and alien interference along with mystery and uncertainty all are part of the mix when dealing with the galaxy's wonders.

Miracle Workers in their own right the Corps solves the problems in each of the short stories. First off there is the continuation of the story left off in book #1. Interphase by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore.

Interphase is about extracting the U.S.S. Defiant fron an interspatial rift. The unusual tenuous connection that the rift created betweeen the two universes causes problems, but the Tholians are a bigger problem. The adventure is well written and this conclusion was worth the wait. A good well written story and the characters are fleshed out here.

Cold Fusion by Keith R.A. DeCandido is the Corps next adventure.
Lt. Nog is in this one but Sonya Gomez is not, we will find out why in the third short story Invincible. DS-9 needs a new power core so, the Corps is sent to an abandoned Cardassian station in the Trivas system known as Empok Nor. When they arrive they run into an alien race of technology thieves. The adventure is well written and the character Lt. Commander Duffy leads the away team to the station. Duffy's character gets fleshed out in the story as the XO is not on this mission. Well written and the alien Androssi are introduced in this story.

Invincible is the third story, by David Mack and Keith D.A. DeCardido is a story wriiten in personal logs, first officer's logs, letters to home and family etc. This is an evolving story as the logs continue. Sonya Gomez is sent to a far remote region of space to help out in a engineering project on the planet Sarindar. Captain Scott had read a paper that Gomez wrote about subspace accelerators and recommended her for the job. Sarindar's completely scan and transporter proof due to the very high ore concentration of Chimerium.

Silicon based life forms exist on the planet of crystalline snowball appearance. Now the story is told and you will want to see how this story plays out.

There is a "Minipedia" in this book to help in explaining the characters and places etc.

In enjoyed these Trek adventures as I hope you will. Very well witten and each story in this series builds upon the last adventure told so you have a sense of continuation.

4 out of 5 stars As enjoyable and even more satisfying than the first.......2002-01-26

"Miracle Workers" was as enjoyable as "Have Tech, Will Travel". The conclusion to the Interphase story was worth the wait. The Cold Fusion story is set between DS9's Avatar and Abyss and filled in some plot points. Overall well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Readable, Reliable Rendition of Islam's Sacred Scriptures.......2006-03-15

When I decided to read the Koran, I studied the various translations available, trying to find the most readable, reliable version available. I downloaded all available public domain translations from gutenberg.org and carefully compared them against the translations currently available in print. I bought several, but not all, the translations, and settled upon this translation to read. I chose this translation because it was one of the most readable and because of my long experience of the reliability of Penguin translations. After I bought my (non-parallel edition) copy in a used book store, I discovered this parallel text edition. For the reader who doesn't read Arabic (which would cover most of us), the only advantage this edition has over the non-parallel text edition is that this edition is still in print and the non-parallel edition will have to be bought used.

As one who knows next to nothing about Islam, I was struck by three things: The moral teachings; the martial teachings; and the figure of Jesus.

First the moral teachings: They are quite similar to the moral teachings of the Christian Bible. Indeed, the Koran explicitly recognizes the scriptural nature of the "Torah" and the "Gospel." The moral teachings don't seem to be as plentiful in the Koran as in the New Testament, but I think there's a very good explanation. Mohammed was at war most of his prophetic career, therefore quite a lot of the Koran deals with warfare.

Second, the martial teachings: They are quite prevalent, and one could easily read the martial teachings to the exclusion of all else in the Koran. Something that struck me about the martial teachings was that they stressed non-aggression. The good believer is to fight only in self defense, and only enough to accomplish the defense. After defeating the enemy, then the good believer must be forgiving and merciful.

Martial teachings prevail in number over moral teachings in the Koran because Mohammed was persecuted in his lifetime, driven out of Mecca, attacked in Medina, and forced to defend himself in a bloody war. Quite naturally, if he's engaged in a war during most of the time he's revealing the Suras of the Koran, he's going to be talking about warfare. Thus, warfare can become a significant aspect of Islamic theology.

Third, the figure of Jesus: Jesus occupies a place in the Koran superior to all the prophets who preceded him. Muslim belief about Jesus is very similar to, but also quite different from, Christian belief. So near, yet so far apart.

Reading the Koran isn't going to make you an expert on Islam any more than reading the Bible is going to make you an expert on Christianity. But given the political, religious, and cultural climate of today's world, it is worth the effort to try to learn something about the beliefs of approximately 1,000,000,000 of our fellow-beings on this planet.

3 out of 5 stars I Suppose One Might Ask: "Do I Hear The Voice Of God Behind These Words?".......2005-09-17

The Koran. Certainly it is one of the two books that have impacted humankind more than any other. For that reason, it should be on the short list of books any serious person with an interest in religion, history, politics, sociology, or current events, should read in her or his lifetime. Supposedly there is no such thing as a "translation" of this holy book. If a version of it appears in other than its archaic Arabic, then it is said to be a "study guide" and not a translation. I kept that in mind all through my study of this monumental work.

I think the Koran represented one of the most significant codifications of law since the time of Hammurabi, and viewed in that light alone its importance in human affairs is assured, but of course the Koran is far more than merely the basis for a legal system, it was the founding code for an entire civilization. To a devout Muslim, the Koran is a pathway to eternal life, a perfect record of the spoken word of God, and it is a reference work for personal conduct, societal ethics, and unifying morality.

Is there anything for a westerner to fear from reading the Koran? No. Is there anything to be gained? Probably. I doubt a beginning to end reading of this book will change the lives of many people who have acquired it for the purpose of study, but in what it stands to teach us about the culture against which our own is at war (and I do stand by that characterization of our global situation) the Koran is invaluable.

    5 out of 5 stars Helpful, simplistic.......2005-05-30

This cut and dry translation is a good one, with a wondergul index and proper translations of the most important points. Of course the 'poetic' passages are lost, but hence the parallel Arabic text is sitting there for the reader to work through, and check the translation himself. A very readable and helpful translation of the many I own I have always gone back to this one for easy reference when doing research. If one is a religious scholar interested in the 'poetic nuance' then they should be reading the Arabic, as anyone reseraching the Bible should learn Hebrew. For the student, for the person interested in Koran, this ia a great beggining.

1 out of 5 stars oversimplified translation .......2004-12-25

NJ Dawood has a very straightforward style of translating. This makes for an easier read, but unfortunately he makes a lot of mistakes when translating the parts of the Quran that are more subtle and require a deeper understanding of the Arabic language. This becomes evident in his tranlation of some of the parables and also many of the verses that make reference to historical events. For a more accurate translation I would recommend Muhammad Asad or Nooruddin.

5 out of 5 stars AUTHENTIC, ACCURATE AND COMPREHENSIVE.......2003-01-23

N.J. Dawood did a humble job in translating this version of "The Koran". It is a very good effort.
The fact that he included a parallel Arabic text (on every page) authenticated his accuracy and intention. Translations are hardly perfect, but this one really came close.
First published in 1956, subsequent editions (and reprints) of this Koran have maintained its tradition of using simple language. Any English speaker who want to know what Muslims believe in should read this book. It is very easy to understand.

              5 out of 5 stars It's all in here!!!!.......2004-07-10

This is one of my favorite coffee table books!!! This was probably the best era for movie posters, in my opinion. Some of my favorite movie's of all time are in here...actually..most of them!!!....................bought some of the poster re-issues because the originals are sooo expensive!!.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz

5 out of 5 stars this is great........2003-10-19

it's very inspirational for designers to keep this handy. these posters are as good or better than the films.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the entire decades series, they are all great!.......2003-08-26

Like the other decade books in this series Film Posters of the 60's is a sensational buy. You could either keep it intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall. This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour. Any of them would look great up on the wall.

The 60's bought Sean Connery as James Bond to the screens. Rock stars like The Beatles also made movies. Films like Cool Hand Luke, The Graduate, Dracula, Night of the Living Dead, The Endless Summer, 2001 a Space Odyssey, Ocean?s 11 along with a heap of Westerns and World War movies like The Dirty Dozen and The Great Escape have stood the test of time. Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman and others went up on walls for the first time in the 60's and you can put them up again today.

I wasn't born in the 60's but I still know most of these great movies. Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent review of the great film posters of the '60's.......1998-09-29

Tony Nourmand's "Film posters of the 60's" is a wonderful and colorful coffee table style book that is a great treat to look through. There are many of the classic film poster images of the French New wave, the films of Stanley Kubrick and the classic 007 posters, just to name a few. Film poster collecting is a great adventure and this book reflects that enthusiasm. This book was lovingly organized with great detail. A superb value! Looking forward to future editions.

              Book Description

1871. Other volumes in this set include ISBN number(s): 0766155579. Volume 1 of 2. This work is Barnum's recollections of forty busy years. There is an almost universal, and not unworthy curiosity to learn the methods and measures, the ups and downs, the strifes and victories, the mental and moral personnel of those who have taken an active and prominent part in human affairs. But an autobiography has attractions and merits superior to those of a "life" written by another who cannot know all that helps to give interest and accuracy to the narrative. Barnum's narrative is interspersed with amusing incidents and even the recital of some very practical jokes. Such is simply because his natural disposition impels him to look upon the brighter side of life and he hopes that his humorous experiences will entertain the reader as much as they were enjoyed by himself.

Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily

Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).

Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.
