4 out of 5 stars Easy reading but his stories are not always fulfilling.......2007-09-17

You get the impression that you are shortchanged at the end on several of his stories; some endings do not bring a lot of satisfaction. Others float here and there without really getting anywhere and there's rarely any action. But when it does occur it's usually at the end. It's not to say that I really do not like Henry James, quite the contrary. I like him because he shows the values that were important in his time. And there is enough variation in the stories to make it worth purchasing and reading. This is a book to bring on vacation. You can read through one story in about two sitting depending on how fast you read. The type is a bit small for me, it would be nice if it were a bit bigger.

5 out of 5 stars Great Short Story Book.......2007-01-05

This book was purchased as part of the required reading of selected short stories for a Retirement Learning at Vanderbilt course on the art of the short story.

The book is a nice size with excellent type and format and is one of a series of Henry James' short stories catalogued by date. The book has a classy look and has additional information about the other books in the series and lists the stories in each.

There is a wonderful Chronology in the back of the book which tells all about Henry James, his travels and life in general.

The only draw back is that the pages are thin so the book can hold a lot and they can sometimes be a little difficult to separate when turning.

All in all a great volume at a modest price.

Book Description

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

How did life become so complicated? One minute I'm dating the hottest man in Dallas and the next I'm back in Cedar Dell, Texas, surrounded by grannies, gossip, and green bean casserole -- and helping my dad recuperate from a car accident. Did I happen to mention that I caused a scandal in town when I got pregnant at seventeen? No one has ever forgiven me -- not my hard-hearted father, my brother Mr. Perfect, or my pregnant-for-the-first-time-at-forty sister who's gone totally hormonal.

As if this weren't enough, who should also be back in town but Max Cooper, the former high school football star, who is my teenage son's father. And now he wants to date me?!

Who ever thought that so many new horizons and second chances would open for me during one long, hot Texas summer?

2 out of 5 stars I must be the only one!!!.......2004-01-07

Let me start off by saying that this book was extremely well written BUT I hated the hero, Max. He left the heroine when she was pregnant with his child, got angry with her because she wouldn't have an abortion, angry with her when she wouldn't give her son up for adoption, fell in love with and married another woman, had a child with her and then after his wife died decided maybe the woman he'd dropped might look pretty good after all. He let everyone in their hometown call their son a bastard, never once in 18 years admitting to being his father(although since they both lived in another city he did have a relationship with his son and did pay child support) So, after all that he pretty much expected Kate, the heroine to be grateful that he decided it was "the right time" for them to be together. Personally, if I was Kate, I'd have jumped on Nicholas(the good looking boss)and told Max to hit the road.

5 out of 5 stars Witty Twist To A Well Used Romance theme.......2003-09-03

One has been hearing of late the echoes of complaints from readers who say romance authors are not offering anything new to the same old plots. I would have to say try this delicious new romance from a master storyteller Geralyn Dawson. In MY BIG OLD TEXAS HEARTACHE, Dawson takes the theme of a secret baby ( of sorts) into a new realm by adding a very creative twist. She has created a hero/heroine who the readers can identify with and compliments them with secondary characters who add just the right seasoning to make this a very tasty romance.

I loved her use of witty Texas humor, a trademark her loyal fans will recognize. She has a number of levels of plots here but is able to intertwine them into a complex story that is satisfying on many levels. The only draw back is the sexual tension is a bit on the light side but the plot is so well crafted you won't feel cheated.

I am looking forward to Nicholas's story and here's hoping Ryan will get his own story as well. This one should be at the top of any serious romance reader's to-buy-list.

5 out of 5 stars very well written.......2003-08-29

For the sixteen years since high school, Kate Harmon has been avoiding her hometown of Cedar Dell, Texas. When Kate became an unwed mother, she created a Texas size scandal by not only keeping the baby but also by keeping the father's identity secret. Max Cooper, the father of Kate's son Ryan, was not prepared to become a father as a senior in high school. He grew up the poor son of an alcoholic father. His only hope of getting out of poverty was to go to college and possibly playing pro football. While Max didn't marry Kate, he did forgo a possible football career and signed up for the Air Force so he could be sure to provide his son with child support. Max did become a part of Ryan's life for a while but the two are now estranged. Kate and Max are both back in Cedar Dell. Kate is caring for her elderly father who has been in an accident and Max, who is widowed, wants to raise his five year old daughter in the small town he grew up in.

This is a great story. The characters are well developed. You really get a feeling for life in this small town. Ms. Dawson did a good job of growing the relationships between the characters so you could believe how they go from conflict to friendship to more. Kate works with Max to resolve the problems between Ryan and Max because it's what's best for her son.

5 out of 5 stars A Keeper For Me.......2003-08-29

Kate comes back home and brings her son Ryan, she got pregnant and no one knew who the father was, she was the talk of the town. When Kate comes back home, Max Ryan's father is so thrilled that they are back now he can get to know his son but Ryan dosen't want nothing to do with him. Max has a daughter she is the cutest litttle thing the things she would say just made me laugh. Kate is trying to get along with her father, he is not making it easy for her. Reading this book, I fell in love with Max, and I found myself rooting for them to be a family but they have to get through things before that happens this book will be a keeper for me.

Happy Reading Lisa

MY BIG OLD TEXAS HEARTACHE
Geralyn Dawson

Pocket
August 2003

When Kate Harmon is summoned back to Cedar Dell, Texas, for a family emergency, she does not hesitate one second. Kate's father has been in a car accident and will need someone to help take care of him for about three months while his injuries heal. Kate's two older siblings, Tom and Sarah, are unable to be responsible for him; Tom because he can't leave his job in Houston for that long, and Sarah because she is expecting her first child and is having complications. Kate can run her accounting business out of her father's home, and run into Dallas if a client needs her.

Kate left Cedar Dell seventeen years ago after causing quite a scandal; she was pregnant and unwed. She and her father parted on bitter terms, and she is hoping that they can mend the rift that has caused her so much pain. Kate, her seventeen-year-old son, Ryan, and Adele, Kate's best friend and companion, make the temporary move to Cedar Dell.

Max Cooper has also returned to Cedar Dell with his five-year-old daughter, Shannon. Ryan knows that Max is his father, but the young man wants nothing to do with him. Kate is upset that Max is back in town because one look at him and Ryan together, and the good folks of Cedar Dell will know that they are father and son, a fact that Kate has kept secret from everyone.

This reviewer thoroughly enjoyed MY BIG OLD TEXAS HEARTACHE for several reasons, the prime one being that the book was extremely well written and moved smoothly and rapidly. Kate and Max share a history and a son; their "history" was only for one night, but they both love their son deeply. Geralyn Dawson does a magnificent job of weaving this story in a believable way that grabs your attention from the beginning. This is a very enjoyable visit to small town Cedar Dell, Texas, that will warm your heart, tickle your funny bone and leave you with a big old smile on your face.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2002-09-04

This was a great book; it showed how Sun Tzu Liao had to be both politically and militarily successful in his campaigns. The author was also able to put a couple plots into one story. This was helpful because it let you see how the St. Ives compact saw the Capellan Confederation. The battles were also well described and the main characters were not invincible. Although sometimes confusing, I think this book is still one of the better books of the Battletech series.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2001-06-20

I am really disappointed by this book.

Sun Tzu is still hungry for power and does not care the least bit for his people! The first new elected Star Lord is the first one to abuse that position, too. I know the result of this two book "solution" and hope he will pay for that.

The authors really do have problems: they do not know enough of militarian behaviour. To make their goals available - most of the time against all odds - the heroes must be nearly unbeatable or "immortal" and the opponents must act stupid!

The CC was the smallest of the "big Houses" and owned a downed military. So how does it come to that famous victories for them? ==> Shifting the odds (by the author)!

Once I liked the CC for its exotic and religious ways and the peace!!full way of Asian philosophy (even the mad ancestors did not threaten that image) but this Sun Tzu is one to cast away!

I hope that the new Precentor Martialum will pay him back within 10 books!

        It would be justice!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent political storyline, bad combat stories!.......2000-09-04

This book depicts the events leading to the invasion of St. Ives Compact by the Capellan Confederation. As such the story unfolds through strategy and political measures taken by both sides. There were few mech combats and I found them rather uninspiring and lack the depth of tactical combat. The story also jumps back and forth between the Capellan and St. Ives point of view, which gets confusing at times.

I whole-heartedly recommend this book to those people who enjoys political thriller. But if u r like me and enjoys intense tactical combat actions, this book is not worth your time!

4 out of 5 stars The Capellans return at the helm of a sane ruler... sweet..........2000-08-11

Is it not hard to imagine the Capellan Confederation rising up as a strong Successor State again? Loren Coleman is striving to make it believable.

Sun-Tzu Liao has decided to make a sort of movement, Xin-Sheng (rebirth in Chinese). He is increasing patriotism across the Confederation, and has just started a campaign to reclaim lost worlds from the 4th Succession War: the St. Ives Compact.

The story revolves around the struggles of Aris Sung, Maurice Fitzgerald, Warner Doles and Cassandra Allard-Liao, with Sun-Tzu and Isis Marik providing the backbone of the plot.

A must for all BTech readers!

4 out of 5 stars Extremely Well Done Cliffhanger.......1999-11-17

Coleman has written a great book and a cliffhanger to boot! I bought this book when it came out and by the time I had finished it I was already waiting anxiously for the next one to come out. The book portrays a side of Sun-Tzu Liao that we have not seen in the Battletech books before. I hope the conclusion was as good as this one was.

5 out of 5 stars How to empower your healing from within........2007-06-09

I can only concur with the reviews noted below: this is a great book filled with a generosity of spirit. Following every chapter are exercises to awaken the healing power of divinity that resides within each of us. Having used these methods for years, I offer a belated thank you, for making them available to a general readership. Healing is an inside job; when we take the perspective of higher mind anything is possible. This book is a hopeful message of self-empowerment. Drink deep, because change is within your grasp.

            5 out of 5 stars I am Everyone.......2000-01-31

Being raised a Catholic with all the guilt connected to that religion, I found the Rabbi's and Ms. Stengel's approach to God/Higher Power to be not only refreshing for me, but very user friendly. They gave me a lot to think about and a lot to use. This book and it's contents ARE for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars This Is INDEED for Everyone.......1999-12-26

I'm not sure if it is because I am a Presbyterian, or in spite of it (it could have been Emerson and Thoreau), that I believe there is a little piece of God in each of us. My misconception was that we were to wait for the God in us to come out. Rabbi Goldhamer has shown me the way to the light and I will eagerly seek Him/Her out within myself. My review is that the book in enlightening and inspirational and my list of people to give it to keeps growing the more I reflect upon its content. Thanks for sharing what you know and practice with the rest of us.

3 out of 5 stars Wide World of Bread.......2004-02-18

This book is written from a British perspective. Some of the worst bread in the world is to be found in Britain, and some of the best in France. Upon reading this book, however, you might get the opposite impression. The attitude of the authors to non-British breads is rather pedestrian. The suggestion to hollow out savory brioche and stuff it with mushrooms or grilled peppers is not one of "the most delicious ways of using" it, but a rather horrid suggestion (the book is full of such marginal serving suggestions). It also criticizes Pain Poilane because it can be "disappointing", as if British bread were any better.

The first 3 dozen pages have a history and primer on bread making. The section on forming breads is too short to be of any help; you will need to consult a more detailed explanation in another bread book. The next hundred pages is an atlas with 2 dozen or so countries and the breads therein. In spite of the fact that each bread description has a chatty entry, the descriptions of the individual breads do not always describe what the ingredients are or what it tastes like. Not all encyclopedia entries have a picture, although many of them do (all of the recipes do). The last section has roughly 100 bread recipes of varying quality. Many are very interesting, using such things like all purpose flour or employing a second dough kneading after the initial proof. On the whole, I liked the recipe section but thought that the encyclopedia section was kind of a waste of time. The only real problem is the small size of the text (you'll need reading glasses for this one) to go along with the small 7 x 9 size of the page.

The authors are British; on the good side, it means that all of the flour measurements in the recipes are listed by weight (halleluiah!), but it also means that some of the terminology is confusing to Americans. The ingredients are those of a British grocery store, so you will have to make substitutions for American ingredients (equivalents are not supplied).

The procedures are mostly very detailed and easy to follow, although steps describing the proper dough textures or doneness while baking breads are not detailed enough (for example, if you follow their instructions for baking croissants, you will under bake them) Some of the procedures are difficult to understand or execute, and often lacking in sufficient detail. Also, the hydration levels of some of the doughs were apparently not correct, and the recipe instructions do not always describe the proper dough texture. The proofing times were often too short. The procedures listed for some of the sourdough breads may or may not work as specified.

It is an interesting, useful, and wide-ranging collection of European bread recipes not often found here in the US (there are a dozen or so American bread recipes). They have interesting flavors, but not all of them are good. It is a good collection of bread recipes to have, and many are worth trying at least once. In spite of the incompleteness and unreliability, it is a useful and enlightening guide.

2 out of 5 stars Good overview of breads in the world, not a good recipe book.......2001-02-18

This book starts with the usual 'bread book' introduction--explaining different grains, various methods of making bread, equipment etc. Then half of the book is devoted on introducing breads in different regions of the world. The rest is bread recipes from each part of the world.

The pictures are nice and gives us an idea of what bread is in Germany, in France, in Japan, in the middle east. However, when I tried a couple of the recipes, they all turned out below average--and I am experienced in bread-making. I would suggest people who want to 'bake' to look somewhere else, such as 'the village baker'

5 out of 5 stars The scent of homemade bread!.......2000-04-04

If you have never made a loaf of homemade bread you have missed out on one of the most therapeutic experiences in the kitchen. The sensory delight you will experience as the bread cooks is nothing short of magical.

Understandably, many of us do not have time to wait for bread to rise or feel insecure about the process of kneading. Put your fears aside, you can do this. Start on a Saturday afternoon and learn all you can. As an avid reader of history and culture, I enjoyed the history and Introduction chapters almost as much as the page after page of homemade goodness. For once the pictures actually look like what you will achieve in a home kitchen.

There is an entire section on breads from various locations. Whether you just enjoy imagining you will make a loaf of bread, or want to purchase a gift for a friend....This is the book on bread you will both love.

Bright exhorts men to do things they should be doing in their marriages anyway, while advising them to force their wives, willing or unwilling, into a traditional role in which they will have no true voice in the relationship. Women are reduced to unintelligent, subservient roles with men who are probably seeking to cure their own ineptitude as husbands - and who may already be abusive. Bright even exhorts the man to "be gentle but firm with her" when you make the announcement that you are taking a traditional role of husband henceforth, as if your wife is an unruly child. Avoid at all costs.

2 out of 5 stars Get with the times.......2003-02-17

As a young, college-educated Christian, I saw this book (and the movement of PK for that matter) as a last-ditch attempt to preserve patriarchal ideals popularized in the 40s/50s.

In one chapter, Dr. Tony Evans claims that the "sissification" of men in America is to blame for ALL of our problems. About these "feminized males," he writes, "Somehow, many men got the idea that the definition of manhood has to do with how many women they have conquered and the number of children they have sired." I think Dr. Evans needs to reevaluate his definition of feminine, because those attributes sound distinctly unfemale. Or does he really think that females are overtly licentious?

There are a number of purportedly "true" stories relayed in the book which in no way could possibly be true. These "promise" keepers can't even keep a promise about honesty and tell genuine stories with less zing.

All in all this book seems to be just another painful example of someone trying to make a buck off of Christianity. It happens every day, on TV, at the bookstore, and in church.

** I gave the book 2 stars because it is entertaining.

This is an awesome book. If the men in my country (the United States) would take to heart the principles in this book, a whole lot of unhappiness and misery would be eliminated.

An excellent novel about the powerful love between a Polish boy and a German soldier during WWII. It really hits on the readers ideas about homosexuals and what rights they should have. Very well written. Appropriate for age 15 and up.

3 out of 5 stars Juicy, Entertaining, but not Credible.......2004-07-29

This book was definitely an enjoyable, entertaining read; very juicy. The only thing that bothers me is credibility. The book is written as a biography of Joan Crawford's career and love life in particular. Nice details about her films and the other celebrities she worked with. However, there are no sources cited anywhere in the book. The book is written almost entirely in quoted dialogue of conversations between Joan and others, and there is no possible way that the author could have actually been present during many of these conversations. Authors need to be careful when using quotes so much! The author did have many conversations with Joan and others who knew her, but she never recorded any of these interviews (which she admits in the beginning of the book). The dialogue is so detailed it leaves the reader feeling that its content may have been subject to much bias and faulty memory. So, enjoy a good easy read, but don't take it all as the truth!

5 out of 5 stars The best read on enlisted Marines in the Korean War.......1998-07-07

Author wastes no time to bring you in as one of his men once in Korea. His prose flows exactly how jarheads communicate to each other, what they thought of [post WW2] Harry Truman's WAR,...the Corps and any other extraneous subject matter. He even takes you on his brief R&R to a pastoral Japanese locale. Albeit, the author"s prose is profane, yet in essence, it is pure and typical Marine lore to anyone who wants to recall the precipitious Eastern Front battlefield at the Punchbowl, while continuing on to the bloody, murderous sieges for the rat-infested combat outposts on the Western Front. The combat actions are vivid and varied; however, just being there, reduces the doubt, how it is to being an enlisted Marine at WAR..., which just wouldn"t go away. If you want a view of that maelstrom, this is the book for you. C. S. Crawford pens the TRUTH of how it is to be a Marine grunt up to his eyeballs in mortal combat against a resolute and inscrutable enemy....there was a slogan in WW2 times: "Is this trip necessary?" Well, this book is just that. "THE FOUR DUECES" is a 5 star reader.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Sad Book.......2004-09-08

Crawford Barton, (1943-1993) was born in fundamentalist Georgia and spent some time in Atlanta before migrating to the West Coast, where he obviously came into his own, both as an artist and a gay man. In this book of beautiful photographs he captures that halcyon time in San Francisco, never to be repeated, after Stonewall and before the assassination of Harvey Milk and then the plague of AIDS. As the title so aptly says, it was a time of hope, but also of innocent abandon, of a newly won sexual and political freedom when anything was possible. There are photographs here of Harvey Milk, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the young Sal Mineo in a garish 70's coat and wide tie. There are also many photos here of Gay Pride parades, photos of people getting ready for the parade and having a great time afterwards. While there is much laughter here, we cannot forget that many of these individuals, including Barton and his lover Larry Lara, whom he photographed extensively, in a few years would be sick and dying but taking care of their own, showing strength and courage that made us all proud to be gay Americans.

This remains one of my favorite books of photography. If you do not know about it, you owe it to yourself to find a copy somewhere. It's a beautiful, sad book and should always remain in print.
