Book Description
Now in paperback, a new collection of short stories from bestselling and award–winning author Joyce Carol Oates that Kirkus reviews described as "vintage Oates."
I Am No One You Know contains nineteen startling stories that bear witness to the remarkably varied lives of Americans of our time. In "Fire," a troubled young wife discovers a rare, radiant happiness in an adulterous relationship. In "Curly Red," a girl makes a decision to reveal a family secret, and changes her life irrevocably. In "The Girl with the Blackened Eye," selected for The Best American Mystery Stories 2001, a girl pushed to an even greater extreme of courage and desperation manages to survive her abduction by a serial killer. And in "Three Girls," two adventuresome N.Y.U. undergraduates seal their secret love by tracking, and protecting, Marilyn Monroe in disguise in Strand Used Books on a snowy evening in 1957.
These vividly rendered portraits of women, men, and children, testify to Oates' compassion for the mysterious and luminous resources of the human spirit.

Oh My! Oh My! Where is the Six Star Button ?.......2007-08-31
Joyce Carol Oates was born in 1938 in upstate New York State and is a distinguished Professor of Humanities at Princeton. She gained fame with her first novel With Shuddering Fall in 1964. Now four decades later, she is the author of scores of novels and other works. The present work is a selection of short stories that have mostly appeared in print before as individual pieces.
If you have read some of her novels and not been terribly impressed, then read this collection of nineteen short stories, and keep on reading until the end. Oates gives us a treat at the end with her story on Marilyn Monroe at a bookstore. You will understand why she is a professor at Princeton. I got interested in Oates after reading a short story by her and I still think that it is her best area, better than the long novels. She has a number of short story collections.
Oates is known for her emotional and dramatic stories, often with women caught in stressful situations, and often set in her native upstate New York. The present collection contains many of these elements plus a lot more. Most stories involve women, women and families. or women and other family members.
The stories are short and intense and some involve crimes, criminals, or people just released from prison. A few involve people with mental handicaps.
This is a dramatic and entertaining stuff that most Oates fans will love.
As a bit of a bonus, one story takes place in a book store and Oates gives us an interesting reading list which I will repeat here:
Freud, "Civilization and Discontents,"
Crane Brinton, "The Age of Reason,"
Margaret Meade, "Coming of Age in Samoa,"
D.H.Lawrence, "The Rainbow,"
Kierkegaard, "Fear and Trembling,"
and
Mann, "Death in Venice."
Stories that grab you and hang on.......2006-03-02
Ms Oates is one of the finest living writers, particularly in the short story form. As only the most skilled storytellers can, she can hook you with the first line and deeply involve you in the lives of her characters in the first paragraph.
I must object to a comment that the reviewer from Booklist made about the story "Me & Wolfie, 1979." The reviewer completely missed the point of a moving story about a bright, sensitive boy and his bi-polar mother. Despite the problems she created for him, she also introduced him to a world of magic and beauty. Moving and not soon forgotten.
America's Master Short Writer.......2005-09-23
Again Joyce Carol Oates is gritty, frightening, writting with humanity and beauty (it is there, just open up your mind's eye and look). And with apparent ease she is a great stylist. This a great collection of stories, written by Chekov's spiritual daughter.
Exquisite Trauma from the Personal to the Global.......2005-09-11
Arguably, this is the best collection of short stories ever published by Joyce Carol Oates. Her focus in this book is trauma, from the most personal and emotional to the most global, i.e. The World Trade Center Disaster. Her elucidation of the psychological is center stage in all of her stories. Each story depicting a truly personal trauma, the book takes the reader through the pain and effects of the death of parents, the influence of serious mental illness, the difficult love and emotional interactions of a student who is seduced by a teacher and many other topics that reflect what we have seen going on in the American Society in the last decade.
Always, there is the ever present hardscrabble existence of those in the Upstate New York environment, the struggle to make a living, and the struggle just to live with the prevailing conditions of the region. The struggle to live and live with one's own thoughts and experiences is truly brought to the surface.
From a writing standpoint this book finds Joyce at the apex of her short story writing career. The stories are carefully crafted, with the use of multiple literary techniques. Her use of phrases to highlight and illustrate specific intensities of thought and feeling are wonderfully blended with a writing style that grips the reader like a pipe wrench. The reader is drawn into the lives of the characters time after time. Her stories do not always resolve, leaving the reader to extrapolate the future of the characters. The pictures she paints with her words are explicit and the most intense examples of human reality. This reality is mixed most explicitly with the internal feeling of most of the characters that they are unique and that they are "No One You Know."
The book is recommended for all serious readers of modern literature. It is a classic in all respects. Do not miss this opportunity to read some of the best short stories ever put in one book.
Love Me or Leave Me.......2004-08-16
There is little doubt that Joyce Carol Oates is not afraid to write about all the things we fear: child abuse, rape, neurotic parents, murder. But just when you think that you have got her pegged, she writes a lovely story like "Three Girls" about a chance meeting, viewing really of Marilyn Monroe by two uppity yet driven-to-distraction-because they see a star college girls at a bookstore in downtown NYC. ("...Marilyn Monroe. She gave us a book. Was any of it real?") Then of course she includes "The Girl with the Blackened Eye" in this collection that recalls her recent "Rape...A Love Story" and once again writes of a brutal rape.
The stories in "I Am No One You Know" are uneven which pretty much goes hand-in-hand with this type of story collection...i.e. taken from many sources, written over the course of several years. But nonetheless there are several real doozies, for example : "Aiding and Abetting, " about how families look away when there is real horror amongst their own and how a huge price can be paid for this and "Fire" about the pleasures of alcohol ("Drinking clarified. Confusion dissolved.")
Oates is equally at home in the short story and the long format form. And, of course she has written brilliantly in both. But there is something about Oates's short stories that draw you in even closer, telescope and make what she is saying even sharper and "I Am No One You Know" contains some shining examples of this.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT Debut Book.......2007-02-01
When I first started the book, I didn't know if I would like it but ending up LOVING it. I loved "Skiff" & "Schooner". They were such a refreshing addition to the book, and Westies are such little hams anyway.
A truly amazing debut book, as one reviewer said, seems like a seasoned author writing it. Am looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. Reading it now.
Manuel's characters sparkle!.......2005-01-05
No wonder Lucas can't resist Charity! She's funny, feisty, smart and gorgeous. And what red-blooded woman wouldn't want a man like Lucas? Okay, so the plot's a little outrageous and some of the situations a bit unlikely...but I couldn't wait to see what the characters were going to do next and the outlandish premise just made it all more fun. Lisa's dialogue, both spoken and internal, sparkles. I fell in love with the people in this book and can't wait for the rest of the series.
Thank you, Lisa Manuel.......2004-05-15
I had stoped reading Historical Romance and then I found Mostly Married by Lisa Manuel.
Mostly Married engages the way I remmembered a good Romance novel should. I can best compare her poignant writing to that of Judith McNaught.
Iam really looking forward to her next novel!
Highly recommend it.
Great premise, strong heroine, wonderful romance!.......2004-04-26
This is a really fabulous book - well-written, with a novel twist on an amnesia premise and thoroughly engaging characters. It's so good, it's hard to believe this is a debut book. I look forward to many more titles from this author. If you like Jane Feather, I recommend Lisa Manuel.
Outstanding Debut Novel.......2004-04-03
Setting - St. Abbs, Scotland and Wakefeld, England 1823 --- As Lucas Holbrook, Duke of Wakefield emerged from unconsciousness, several things were not making sense - one of them being why he was smelling sea air in his home at landlocked Longfeld Park. The other thing was why the lovely green-eyed naked `goddess' sharing his bed was berating him for fighting and carousing the night before, and why on earth was she calling him Luke Martin instead of `your grace'. As Lucas became more and more confused, Charity, Luke Martin's wife, began experiencing her worst nightmare. There had always been the chance that the half-dead man her family had fished from the sea would regain memory of his past, but that he could forget her and the idyllic life they'd made, loving and working together in the past year, was horrifying especially now that she was certain that she was carrying his child! She had planned to tell him about the babe, but this just didn't seem to be the time - when he couldn't seem to remember who she was or what they had meant to one another.
Charity realized that Luke, the man she'd loved and married, was much too honorable to ignore his former life and had to return to his family to let them all know he was alive and well, including his fiancé, Helena. Charity had no choice but to let him go back to his world but she couldn't give up completely her hope of seeing him remember the life they'd shared together - the past year of paradise and dreams. She concocted a plan to slip into his realm, emerging as his families' newest and dearest friend and neighbor, Miss Charity Williams. Lucas, would be torn between the two women, one he had loved so well like a sister, and one whose fragrance and body he was beginning to remember so well!
Readers will be impressed and delighted with this outstanding debut novel of an author that I predict is a new star in the making. Her well-developed characters sprang to life in this novel as the author gives us two compassionate, loving and totally honorable protagonists that you simply have to love as they both try to determine the right and honorable path to take over their respective emotional turmoil. She liberally sprinkles in amusing and lovable and some villainous secondary characters, and keeps up the suspense of how and why this landlocked Duke ended up being fished out of the sea. The love story is a joy and you will be entertained and satisfied from beginning to end! I suggest that lovers of this historical romance genre put this author on their `watch' and `buy' lists! --- Submitted by Marilyn Rondeau, Official Reviewer for www.historicalromancewriters.com ---
Book Description
In this exhilarating sequel to The Skylark of Space, momentous danger again stalks genius inventor and interplanetary adventurer Dr. Richard Seaton. Seaton’s allies on the planet Kondal are suffering devastating attacks by the forces of the Third Planet. Even worse, the menacing and contemptuous Fenachrones are threatening to conquer the galaxy and wipe out all who oppose them. And don’t forget the dastardly machinations of Seaton’s arch-nemesis, DuQuesne, who embarks on a nefarious mission of his own. Against such vile foes and impossible odds, how is victory possible?
Featuring even more technological wizardry, alien worlds, and all-out action than its predecessor, Skylark Three is hailed by many as the imaginative high point of the Skylark series.
Customer Reviews:
You've got to enjoy this one..........2006-05-19
If our reality is socially constructed as some postmodernists now suggest, the Skylark series reflects both the era and the society it was written in. Assuming that we have a better world view today is, frankly, arrogant. Suspending imagination and jumping into this well-written SF adventure will not only delight the readers in a well-turned story, but inform them about the thinking that prevailed during a first half of the 20th century and, perhaps, provide some insight into our society today. The reader will also recognize the sheer genius and insight of "Doc" Smith. I introduced them quietly to my son, to find him captivated by the stories like I was. The label "space opera," I think, does not do these books (or the Lensmen Series) justice. Explore them on your own as one might read classics from another era.
Okay, this feels right...this is where it REALLY begins.......2006-05-09
I was glad I read "Skylark of Space," because it led to this. And this rocks. Forget the science that sometimes gets a little off track... there are concepts in this book that you see over and over in sci-fi afterward. Watch "Star Trek," and you'll come across E. E. "Doc" Smith.
The atomic drive that runs on copper... yes, copper. The metal of power. I guess it would sound like a giant arc welder, wouldn't it? Like the ships in the "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers" serials... I wonder. Flash and Buck definitely owe something to Richard Seaton, the overlord of an entire galaxy.
Force fields, tractor beams, energy weapons of every variety, ships the size of Star Destroyers, black holes, warp travel...
You've gotta read this.
Bearable pulp, more quaint than fun........2003-05-23
This was the second book in E.E.Smith's first series, and it's pure thirties pulp, quite good of it's period, but then the period happily tolerated segregation. Smith hit his stride with this one, it is Space Opera with all the stops out on the organ. New ships are invented one week, in mass production by the end of the month, and obsolete within six months, the weapons so irresistible that battle seem to be a clash of heavily armed eggshells. Geocide is a casual tactic. Every thing is so black-and-white in Smith's writing, the humans are boy scouts in space, and most of the rest seem to be slaverin' B.E.M's after aw wimminfolks.
Frankly, skip this one and try Skylark DeQuesne, written about 30 years after the rest, when Smith had calmed down a bit, and his palatte had a few more colours other than black, white . . . oh and purple
If you can find this book, buy it!.......1999-03-25
I first read this book during the golden age- fourteen that is. Yet it has held a special place in my mind and heart ever since. It still gives me a thrill to think about this book even though I am now 49 going on 50. For sheer breadth of imagination, scope of theme and pace of action it is one of the best books I have ever read. It is ,of course, sadly dated by todays standards- but you must realize that when this book was written the very idea of space travel was nothing but sheer fantasy to the average person. At a time when no human had ever traveled faster than 300 miles per hour E. E. Smith was writing about star travel and doing it in a convincing and entertaining manner. If you like alien villains, Smith gives you the Fenachrone, surely one of the most arrogant, vile races ever committed to paper. If you like human villains, Smith gives you "Blackie" Duqesne the pure, utterly amoral scientist. If you like heroes, Smith gives you Richard Ballinger Seaton, brilliant scientist and engineer and his friend and partner Martin Crane- not to mention their wives who play a part in the plot that is well above the level of "rescue the Damsel" that was the standard fare at the time this was written. If you like space ships and weapons that boggle the mind, Smith gives you miles-long spaceships built of materials of unbelievable strength dueling in intergalactic space. And finally, there's the Norlaminians, a race devoted heart and soul to the accumulation of knowledge of every sort- and a good thing too, for without their help, beating the Fenachrone would have been impossible. Smith has a way of writing about impossible things that makes you think: Wouldn't it be great if ......... If you can suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours I guarantee that this book will leave you wanting more.
It is one of the best written books I have ever read........1998-11-01
THe book (also the sereis) will hold you spell bound for hours on end. It is well written, and very thought through. I hope that the publishers see that the series is reprinted. I have read the books many times over the last 35 yrs. I am looking for new copies to replace the ones I now have.

Book Description
Altars are everywhere. In executive suites and private homes, in restaurants and gardens - whether religious in focus or not - people are reinventing the altar in new and imaginative ways. From a simple cherished photo surrounded by candles and shells that serves to attract the eye and draw the mind into gentle contemplation, to a more elaborate expression of personal style, altars bring peace and a place of beauty into daily life. In this first complete handbook on altars, Peg Streep shows readers how to use specific materials, colours, symbols, imagery, scents, crystals, music, and more to create their own personal altars. Streep covers the history, symbolism, and different types of the altar and provides detailed and fully illustrated guidance for anyone to create and enjoy sacred space. A discussion of offerings and rituals, along with a handy resource section, make this volume definitive, Altars Made Easy, makes the process simple and fun.
Customer Reviews:
I can't believe trees were actually cut down to publish this.......2005-01-05
If you're sufficiently interested in having your own altar that you're perusing books on the subject, you probably already know 'way more about the subject than you're going to get out of this book.
There's little real information or insight about altars, per se. It's mostly the same filler on what gem, what animal, what deity, what color candle, etc., symbolizes what, as you'd find in every other "spiritual practices" book on your shelves at home.
Altars are beautiful almost by requirement and some decent photos would have been great. Instead you get a couple of unengaging drawings on what appears to be the sort of paper formerly reserved for Big Chief notepads.
Don't bother.
Lacking.......2004-11-24
There are some wonderfull books about altar building on the market today. This one is NOT one of them. I was soooo dissapointed when I picked this book up. There are no photographs to look at and the information is hardly what i would consider informative. Try some of the other altar books on the market, ths one is not even worth buying used.
Altars Made Easy : A Complete Guide To Creating Your.......2003-05-31
I thought it could be better. I own it and think it could be better. It lacks pictures and it would have made the book better to see what the person was talking about. I have another book on alters by another author called Dinese linn which was much better.
Altars 101.......2001-06-19
Complete it certainly is not. It brushes lightly over most of the major aspects of altar design and symbolic elements without getting too deeply into any of them. Good for the preteen earth mother or wicca type just wanting to get some basic information and maybe build her first altar. Good for those wanting to get a basic familiarity with the various mystic elements and traditions which can be utilized.
Disapointing.......2000-06-13
I thought this was a OK book not what I expected. I thought this was going to be a book just about pagan altars and is not, it talks about many other altars and things so a lot of what was in the book did not apply to me. I thought it was a kind of a let down it should be more pacific with what kind of altars she covers.

Mediterranean Seafood 3rd Edition by Alan Davidson
Mediterranean seafood is a topic as vast as the riches of that fabled sea itself. Written by distinguished food historian Alan Davidson (author of The Oxford Companion to Food), MEDITERRANEAN SEAFOOD is a seminal work of culinary scholarship. The new edition catalogs edible marine life and provides identifications in a dozen languages and over 100 line drawings. Davidson puts knowledge into practice with 240 skillfully presented recipes, culled from cuisines throughout the region. Davidson's work possesses the quixotic charm of the true enthusiast; his practical discussions are enlivened by touches of witty erudition that will delight those new to the subject, as well as readers steeped in the biology and culinary traditions of the Mediterranean.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference, Great Read, Great Recipes. Buy it Now........2005-02-17
`Mediterranean Seafood' and `North Atlantic Seafood', both by noted culinary writer Alan Davidson, the author of `The Oxford Companion to Food' are reference books which a serious cook must have in their library where time is spent deciding on what to eat rather than time spend actually cooking. These books belong to a rare breed of books in English such as Elizabeth Schneider's `Vegetables from Amaranth to Zucchini' or `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients' which thoroughly cover a broad single subject or the `Larousse Gastronomique' which gives an overview of virtually every culinary subject, at least from the point of view of French cuisine.
Both books are organized in the same way that gives primacy to information on the aquatic species and secondary coverage of recipes.
Biological family, genus, and species organize the first part on the catalog of species in order that the biological similarity of the fishes is clearly shown. Each article gives the most common English name, the two part Latin scientific name, the scientist who assigned this name (most commonly the great inventor of biological Taxonomy, Linnaeus), the biological family name, and the common name of the fish in virtually every language of the major fishing nationality bordering the relevant body of water. The North Atlantic species, for example, are named in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, German, Polish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and others such as Gaelic (Irish). The Mediterranean species' names are given in French, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Tunisian, Turkish, and others such as Bulgarian, Romanian, and Russian if, for example, the species is most commonly found in the Black Sea, which is included in the coverage of the Mediterranean. These names in themselves are entertaining to the linguistically inclined, as it is interesting to see the similarities and differences from country to country. For example, even though the Turks came to Asia Minor from central Asia, most of their names for fishes are very similar to the Greek name, making a lot of sense, as a traveling people is likely to name things new to them based on the names given by the indigenous population. The articles on every species also have a highly detailed black and white drawing of each animal. The great value to these is that it makes comparing the appearance of different fishes very easy, as every species is depicted in a similar style. It is too bad they could not be depicted to scale, but this would have had the sturgeon filling two pages while the anchovies would be the size of a period. Instead, the remarks on each fish give the average market length and a description of the typical color and markings.
The catalog entry also gives a paragraph or two on cuisine, which is a discussion of the culinary desirability of the species and typical ways in which the animal is prepared. For most fish, this includes methods by which the fish is butchered. The catalog entries also include a list of recipes and page numbers for these recipes in the second major section of the book.
The second major section divides recipes by country. The Mediterranean volume has chapters of recipes from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Black Sea, and Northern Africa. The North Atlantic volume has recipes from Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Canada, the United States, Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales. France merits two sections, covering the southwest and the northwest. The US merits four sections, covering New England, the Middle Atlantic States, the Chesapeake, and the Carolinas and Georgia.
Other books, such as `Fish' by Shirley King seems to have copied this scheme, but seems to be much less successful in that not enough valuable information is packed into the catalogue to make it interesting enough reading to outweigh the annoyance of doing a two step search for a recipe on haddock, for example. The other side of the coin is that if you live in Maryland, you are much more likely to be interested in recipes from the Chesapeake than in recipes from Maine.
One is tempted to expect these recipes to be very generic and not as interesting as those you may find in books of `haute cuisine' from a fish specialist such as Eric Rippert. This is partially true. Davidson is less the great cook than he is a great writer on food. This means that while his recipes may come from common sources, he gives us much more information on the background of the recipes than the chef may do. Two perfect examples of this case are the recipes for bouillabaisse (French fish stew) and Maryland crab cakes. Davidson confesses to giving us something simpler than the `de luxe version', yet this simple treatment is entirely appropriate to the simple origins of the dish, before the gourmets got their hands on it. Similarly, the crab cake recipe has very few ingredients, mostly just crabmeat, seasonings, breadcrumbs, and enough egg to hold it all together.
The supplementary information tells much about the fish cuisine of both regions. The most interesting information is on the fact that while the Mediterranean is very shallow, it has relatively little continental shelf while the North Sea is practically all shelf, suitable to the spawning of young fish in shallow water. This does much to explain the popularity of the North Atlantic cod in peninsular Italy, virtually surrounded by water.
The bibliography shows that the author has based most of his material on local sources in native languages such as Polish, Turkish, and Portuguese. This may only help the multilingual scholar, but then it is the rare English culinary work that does this. One of the greatest things about these volumes is that all of this great material is available in trade paperbacks, which list for no more than $25.
These are must have books for devoted foodies!
A must-have classic.......2004-07-15
Just before his untimely death, this year, Alan Davidson received the highly prestigious Erasmus Prize for European culture, for his publications on food. This book, along with his Companion and other publications, is a classic. It is crammed full of useful and necessary information. The fish section describes a species, its latin name, and the names in various other languages in the region. The recipe section deals in an intelligent way with regional knowns and unknowns, such as a sencible discussion on bouillabaisse. Any serious library of cookbooks has to have Davidson's books, including this one.
Wonderful cookbook and reference.......2000-08-06
All the commonly-eaten fish and shellfish of the Mediterranean are covered in this wonderful reference and cookbook. As in his Atlantic Seafood, each animal's entry includes an old engraving (better than a photo for identification -- except for color), its scientific and common names in various languages, a description of the animals habit's and culinary qualities, and a reference to recipes.
Recipes are organized by country, and are well chosen and edited. The only criticism I might offer is that it is hard to find recipes by type. That is, it's very easy to find recipes for mackerel or recipes from Italy, but it's hard to find all the baked-fish recipes suitable for a dark-fleshed fish.
A great book like this should never be out of print! It's one of my favorite gifts for friends in Greece and Italy....

really informative!.......1999-06-16
I just got started collecting, and this book has given me all the background information on what to expect. It's impossible for any book to keep up to date with the actual Beanies, but you won't find a better guide to the hobby itself.
The definitive book for collectors........1999-04-20
Some many books on BBs are simply price lists or have a very limited period of usefulness. This one is different and will be my reference of choice. There is no way to predict what Ty will do, but this is the book that can track what has happened to date. The section on spotting counterfeits is invaluable and has saved me from making a couple of costly mistakes. I also got some chuckles from the creatively posed beanies in the nice color photos. Right after reading my own copy, I immediately sent a copy to my beanie-crazed young nieces.
Nice Try.......1999-04-02
This book is a good attempt at being different from all of the other Beanie Baby books and guides. However, it is not that easy to read because the authors grouped the Beanies according to genre, not alphabetically. Black and white pictures were not all that useful. Some background information (but not a lot) sets this book apart from the rest of the pack. However, it makes little attempt at saying what makes a particular beanie baby popular or unpopular or with whom. A good guide to starting out in the hobby but not useful if you are already immersed.
ONE OF THE BEST BEANIE BOOKS EVER.......1999-02-07
This is a great book about BEANIE BABIES! This is especialy good for beginner collectors. It teaches you special facts about the beanies and how to collect them. I think if you like beanie babies you should deffintly get this book!!!!!!!!
This is a really great info beanie baby book!!!.......1999-01-29
I really liked this book because it had all kinds of odd information. There is more than 5 blurbs of different facts per page. It has how to avoid counterfits, facts about each beanie, and more. It even has a checklist with pictures. This is definatly the best Beanie Baby book I own. It is perfect for begginers and experienced Beanie collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Taking the stress out of machine quilting.......2000-05-02
This book has some excellent patterns. Patterns that are a little different, but still viable for a quilter of moderate ability. What I like best about the book is the section on lap quilting. Ms Bonesteel's method of putting the quilt together in strips and then quilting it section by section works out very well for machine quilting, because you are dealing with manageable segments, rather than trying to wrestle with a large quilt at the machine. They can be very unwieldy. While you have more hand work, the results are very neat and professional looking.
Inspiring and Thought-provoking.......2000-02-26
Georgia Bonesteel's book, Lap Quilting Lives!, has several innovative ideas for lap quilted designs. Her instructions are clear and well-written. (While I have chosen a quilt from this book to make, I haven't started the project yet.)
The design choices are varied, from traditional patterns to modern-looking designs.
I would have enjoyed seeing sketches of alternative colorways for several of these quilts.
I'd recommend this book as thought-provoking and inspirational. Encourages "out of the box" thinking for quilters.

Not very many options.......2005-08-23
I do not think that this book had a lot of crafts that many teens would like. One of the rooms was so childish and colorful that I could not imagine many teens wanting. There were a couple ideas that were okay, like table covers and lamps, but not a lot of the crafts were things i would imagine a lot of teens wanting. The title is also misleading - it's not really a big book of teen rooms - it's a small book of out-dated pre-teen rooms.
Not so Hot.......2002-08-18
I am a 13-year old girl (I really am 13, I just didnt understand the adult reveiw system) re-doiecorating my room, and I needed a book for ideas. I ordered this book expecting many different styles and ideas for rooms, but I was very disapointed. There are only eight different rooms, and I feel that they were all very much out-dated. I wanted something hip and current (like most teens want), but that book really wasnt that at all.
Great Ideas - more for girls than boys!.......2001-11-03
I got this book to look for ideas for re-doing my 14 year-old son's room. He has not had an update since 4th grade and wanted to move beyond his "cowboy cats" theme. This book had several VERY DO-ABLE rooms. Each room gave you detailed instructions on how to create the different looks. I have seen some children/teen rooms in magazines that make me laugh because they are either so "decorated" that a real kid could never match, or they are so obviously created for a million dollar home. I could picture real kids LIVING in all of the rooms pictured.

Book Description
The marvels of Celtic design depend not only on understanding how to create ornament and pattern but also on how to create a composition--a dazzling design that is even more striking than its individual ornaments. In this new book, Jack Mackinder provides the key to understanding these designs. He explains how the pages of the Book of Kells, the Book of Durrow, and the other great Gospel manuscripts of the seventh to ninth centuries were set out by the ancient scribes, re-creating the precise geometric methods used, and explaining how they can be applied to contemporary work. Next, he shows how to draw step patterns, key patterns, interlace, and spirals to fit into the shapes created in the manuscripts. Step-by-step demonstrations will enable contemporary calligraphers to create their own designs. With clear diagrams, many in two colors, and a detailed explanatory text, this book will inspire craftspeople and designers everywhere.

Author's reply to the reader from Chandler.......2003-03-07
Your reviewer from Chandler has missed it entirely.
Anyone considering buying my book should be aware that it is all about creating your own designs in the style of the 8th century Insular manuscripts, not about copying someone else's examples.
"basically shows the basic border layouts"
What the book shows is the precise, geometrically defined rectangles that the 8th century Irish scribes used.
"doesn't really give any examples of knotwork, etc."
The 10 pages of knotwork describe a method for designing your own knotwork rather than merely copying someone else's examples. If the "etc." means step patterns, key patterns, and spirals then 20 pages are devoted to creating these designs to neatly fill in the frames. Notice that the frames are drawn first and then ornamented - it is not a case of ruling up a frame of arbitrary size and shape around an ornament.
"If you can use a ruler and circles template you don't need this book."
Quite right. If a ruler and circles template is all you can use then this book is no use to you. Only if you can use a T-square, set square, and a compass (a circles template won't do) will you get any benefit from the book.

Not what I expected.......2003-02-08
This book basically shows the basic border layouts to use for Celtic designs but doesn't really give any examples of knotwork, etc. used to fill in the borders. For example, the design on the front jacket of the book is not indicative of what's inside. The basic template of the jacket decoration (ie - the shape of the border) is shown, but not the detail work of the knotwork, etc. If you can use a ruler and circles template, you don't need this book.
